Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling.

With the devastating fires in California, we felt compelled to act—however small our efforts might be. Partnering with Square One Concepts and Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe, we launched a donation drive, rallying our incredible Valley community to collect thousands of stuffed animals. Thanks to YOUR generosity, these donations have now made their way to California, bringing a much-needed dose of comfort to children who have lost so much. We’ve dedicated a page in our City Scene section to highlight this initiative and the many Valley efforts that came together to support our neighbors in need. Our community continues to prove that kindness knows no bounds.

As this is our HOME issue, I find myself reflecting on what home truly means— not just for me, but for my children. I grew up in a middle-class family, but after a life shift, we moved from apartment to apartment. And yet, everywhere we lived felt like home. Because home isn’t about square footage or fancy finishes—it’s about the people who fill the space. That’s the foundation we work every day to give our children—not one built on walls, but one rooted in love.

For all the places I’ve lived, I’m endlessly grateful to call the Valley home. Our safe streets, our wonderful schools, our loving community—this is where our kids play and dream; where we find support in the people around us. This is where home extends beyond our front door to our friends, neighbors, and community.

I’m beyond honored to have Zac and Corbin grace the cover of this issue. They call Arizona home year-round, and with a house full of three boys (four, if you count my husband!), we couldn’t be more excited that baseball is back as we dive into spring training.

Our cover photoshoot was an unforgettable experience—they even let my middle son watch, giving him a front-row seat to witness his idols in action (as captured in the photo). A huge thank you to our D-Backs for being more than just athletes—for being the kind of role models our kids can truly admire.

Inside these pages, you’ll find stories that celebrate home—from powerhouse realtors shaping Arizona’s market to the incredible friendship of two 90-year-old roommates whose bond is like nothing I’ve ever heard.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

DESIGNING SPACES THAT INSPIRE WELL-BEING

AND PRODUCTIVITY

Color plays a significant role in shaping the atmosphere of your home, influencing mood, energy, and emotional well-being. For calming and soothing spaces like family rooms, soft blues and greens promote relaxation, while neutral tones such as beige or soft gray provide a sense of grounding. In contrast, kitchens can benefit from more energetic tones—think warm yellows to create a cheerful atmosphere or subtle reds to encourage connection and appetite. By thoughtfully choosing colors that align with the purpose of each space, you can design a home that supports both serenity and vitality, enhancing the overall harmony of your environment.

Whether you’re striving for success in personal relationships, professional goals, or athletic achievements, our concierge mental health services at Choulet Performance Psychiatry are tailored to your unique needs and ambitions.

As we celebrate our Home Issue, we’re spotlighting Arizona Diamondbacks standouts Zac Gallen and Corbin Carroll, who don’t just play here—they live here year-round. From staying involved in the community during the offseason to preparing for another exciting season, Arizona is more than just a backdrop—it’s home.

Zac and Corbin share personal stories, from their favorite local spots to unforgettable moments on and off the field. Whether they’re making plays or making memories, their Arizona connection is a home run in every sense.

Here’s an exclusive read on the insights they shared during their magazine cover shoot.

EXCLUSIVE INSIGHTS FROM THE DIAMONDBACKS DUO

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES PATRICK PHOTOGRAPHY

Zac Gallen

“I stay in Arizona during the offseason. I’m at Salt River Fields often—about four days a week. It’s such a great setup, and being able to train here year-round is a huge advantage.”

– Corbin on staying local during the offseason

“I like to hang with my English Bulldog, Moose. He often comes with me to Salt River for practice, and by the end of the day, he’s completely exhausted.”

– Zac man’s best friend

“I love spots like Bacanora downtown. It’s a favorite because my friend René owns it—it’s always fun to support someone you know, and the food is amazing.”

– Zac on his go-to dinner spot

“As soon as the season ends, you want to start getting ready for the next one. I take off for a week and then I’m back to throwing and playing catch every day.”

– Zac on pitching prep

“In the outfield, my favorite plays are the sliding ones—they’re the most fun, and there’s a rush when you make that kind of play. It’s the kind of thing that gets the crowd going, and that energy is contagious.”

– Corbin on his favorite part of playing outfield

“As a pitcher, I love being able to control the tempo of the game. The pitch clock aside, nothing starts until I throw. It’s nice to be able to set the pace and dictate how things unfold.”

– Zac on being a pitcher

“If I could strike out any player, it would probably be Barry Bonds, just to see what that challenge would be like. I think it would be a battle. But I’d strike out Babe Ruth in three pitches. …And Moreno.”

– Zac on an ideal one-on-one

“As a kid, my favorite jerseys were Ichiro and Robinson Canó. Seeing kids in my jersey now is super special.”

– Corbin on coming full circle

“Austin

-

“The streak is up there, along with my MLB debut and the World Series.”

– Zac on his most memorable moments

“Fantasy football? Don’t get me started— it’s a sore subject. We had the best team all season, start to finish, but made some trades late in the year. One of our assistant GMs beat us in the semifinals by seven points. Seven! I’m still bitter about it.”

– Zac on his Fantasy Football loss

“When I strike someone out like Aaron Judge, it’s a great feeling. He’s such a talented player, so it’s fun when you fool him and think, ‘Okay, I can hang with the best.’”

– Zac on striking out a big-timer

“Favorite stadiums to play at besides Arizona? San Diego’s incredible—the energy is unmatched. Wrigley and Fenway are also amazing because of the history and tradition. Playing there makes you feel like part of something bigger.”

–  Corbin on his favorite stadiums to play in

“When we play in L.A., they bring Dodger dogs into the clubhouse for us.”

– Corbin on the best hot dogs in baseball

“Before games, I stick to something simple: rice and a protein like chicken, steak, or fish. Our team cooks are amazing.”

– Corbin on his pre-game meal

Corbin Carroll
“BASEBALL WAS PLAN A— AND THE ONLY PLAN I HAD.” -ZAC GALLEN

“A tough loss or a big win, you just have to show up the next day and stay consistent. Baseball is a long season—you can’t dwell too much on any one game. The focus must stay on the bigger picture.”

– Zac on handling wins and losses

“My dad recently gave me a small horse statue with a cowboy. It was made by my dad’s friend, and it’s a piece of family history.

My grandpa was also an architect and did my parent’s first house. I am getting those original plans framed.”

– Corbin on his most special home décor

“Being part of our young Diamondbacks team is exciting. It’s fun to cultivate a fan base and grow with the community. Seeing kids grow up rooting for us makes it more meaningful.”

– Zac on playing for a fresh team

“I proposed to my fiancée the Friday before Thanksgiving at our house. Wedding planning is definitely harder than pitching.”

– Zac on getting engaged

“Above our bed, we have the Zach Bryan Burn Burn Burn album cover as artwork. We both love the picture—it’s simple but meaningful, and it’s one of the most personal things in our home.”

– Zac on a meaningful piece of home décor

“She had no idea what I did for a living when we met, and I love that about her. She didn’t care about baseball—she’s a fan of me, not the sport, and that’s something I appreciate.”

– Zac on what he appreciates about his fiancée

“Drink of choice? In the summer, I’m a tequila person. In colder weather, I’ll go for bourbon—an Old Fashioned hits the spot.”

– Zac on his go-to sipper

“I love golf. Whisper Rock, Silverleaf, and Scottsdale National are some of my favorite courses. I don’t take it too seriously—I play for fun and just enjoy being outside.”

– Zac on golfing in AZ

“There’s really nothing like hitting a home run. It’s nice… you don’t have to run the bases fast .”

– Corbin on the thrill of hitting a homer

Zac Gallen
Corbin Carroll

“Staying grounded for me comes from my upbringing in New Jersey (go Sixers). My family always reminded me to stay humble and remember where I came from. It’s about playing for the little kid in me who dreamed of this life.”

– Zac on staying grounded

“I didn’t have a backup plan. Baseball was Plan A—and the only plan I had. I put everything into it, and thankfully, it worked out.”

– Zac on his career mindset

“If there’s a secret to pitching, it’s learning to throw strikes at a young age. You might not have the velocity yet, but commanding the ball is something you can always work on. It sets the foundation for everything else.”

– Zac on pitching advice

“Michael Jordan is still my idol. I was also a huge Cardinals fan—Albert Pujols was my guy. Watching him hit was inspiring, especially as someone who wasn’t the biggest kid on the team.”

– Zac on his childhood idols

“I didn’t become a full-time pitcher until college. I wasn’t a big kid. Through high school, I played shortstop. Transitioning to pitching full-time was a game-changer and opened so many doors for me.”

– Zac on his path to pitching

“Baseball doesn’t feel like work. Even though it’s our job, we’re out there playing a game with friends and having fun like we did when we were kids.”

– Zac on his favorite part of the game

PV’S SHANE AND Kara Bieber

Our Chat with the MLB Pitcher and His Entrepreneur Wife Expecting Their First Baby

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAYLEY DOLSON PHOTOGRAPHY
IG @karamaxinebieber

We sat down with Shane and Kara Bieber for an exclusive interview, diving into their journey as a couple navigating life in the spotlight. Calling Paradise Valley home, the Biebers open up about Shane’s career as a star pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians, Kara’s inspiring entrepreneurial ventures, and their excitement as they prepare to welcome their first child.

This heartwarming and candid conversation will make you a Bieber Believer!

Q: SHANE, AS A STAR PITCHER FOR THE GUARDIANS, YOU’RE LOCKED IN ON YOUR 2025 COMEBACK. KARA, AS AN ENTREPRENEUR AND SOON-TO-BE MOM, YOU’RE PREPARING FOR YOUR BIGGEST ADVENTURE—PARENTHOOD. HOW ARE YOU BOTH FEELING ABOUT THIS NEW CHAPTER?

Kara: We’re so excited. I feel so lucky to have had such an easy pregnancy. I know that’s not always the case for everyone, but I’ve really enjoyed it.

Shane: Yeah, Kara’s sitting here about to pop, but you wouldn’t know it. She looks like she just found out she was pregnant yesterday.

Q: KARA, YOU GREW UP IN HUMBOLDT IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA; PRETTY RURAL COMPARED TO YOUR LIFE NOW. TELL ME ABOUT THAT.

Kara: I didn’t realize my childhood was unique until college—riding my horse for milk shocked others, but growing up among redwoods meant freedom, nature, and a slower pace.

Shane: At first, I couldn’t grasp Kara’s Humboldt stories—it was a world away from my Orange County upbringing. But the more I learned, the more I appreciated it. CONTINUED

Q: SHANE, GROWING UP IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, DID YOU ALWAYS DREAM OF PLAYING PRO BASEBALL?

Shane: Yeah, baseball was always a huge part of my life. I played multiple sports growing up, thanks to my parents who encouraged me to try everything, but baseball just stuck. Even as a kid, I was super competitive. I remember always trying to push myself and get better.

I tried different positions, but by 12, pitching was my path. I kept progressing and jumped at the chance to play in college.

Q: YOU ENDED UP AT UCSB. WAS THAT YOUR DREAM SCHOOL?

Shane: Definitely. I didn’t have a ton of offers coming out of high school. Luckily, they gave me a shot to play, and it all worked out.

Q: UCSB IS KNOWN FOR ITS SOCIAL SCENE IN ISLA VISTA (IV). DID YOU MEET AT A PARTY?

Kara: Yes! It was alumni weekend, and Shane was back in town. We had mutual friends who introduced us and instantly hit it off. He showed up in jeans and sandals, and I remember thinking, “Wow, this guy needs a wardrobe update.”

Shane: laughing Hey, it worked, didn’t it?

“SURGERY FELT LIKE A GUT PUNCH—I’M USED TO COMPETING, NOT SITTING OUT. SHIFTING FROM THAT INTENSITY TO REHAB WAS A MENTAL BATTLE. THE EARLY WEEKS WERE ROUGH, BUT KARA AND MY FAMILY KEPT ME GROUNDED. I REFRAMED IT AS AN OPPORTUNITY, FOCUSING ON WHAT I COULD CONTROL— NUTRITION, MINDSET, AND REHAB—TO COME BACK STRONGER.” -SHANE BIEBER, MLB PITCHER

Q: SHANE, AFTER UCSB, YOU WERE DRAFTED. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

Shane: I was drafted in 2016, grinded in the minors, and got called up fast. My 2018 debut—on my birthday—was nerve-wracking, but seeing Kara and my family calmed me.

Kara: I remember getting the call and flying out to see his debut. It was surreal!

Q: HOW DID YOU GUYS HANDLE THE LONG-DISTANCE THINGS WHILE SHANE WAS TRAVELING SO MUCH?

Kara: It wasn’t easy, but we made it work. I ended up moving to Cleveland, and that’s when things started to fall into place for us.

Shane: Kara moved across the country for me, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

Q: SHANE, YOU’VE HAD A STRONG CAREER WITH THE GUARDIANS, BUT THIS YEAR’S INJURY WAS TOUGH. WHAT HAS REHAB BEEN LIKE?

Shane: I’m at the Guardians’ spring training facility in Goodyear almost every day. We go through a lot of mobility work, strength training, and specific drills to build back my arm strength. It’s not as exciting as taking the mound, but every little step is progress.

In-season is all about fine-tuning and routines, but now it’s about patience and small wins—better range of motion, less pain, more strength. Visualization has been key, keeping me mentally sharp and fueling my competitive fire. While tough, I’m making great progress.

“Being a mom comes first, but my brands mean so much to me. I love having something of my own beyond Shane’s career.”
-Kara Bieber

Q: WHEN DO YOU EXPECT TO BE BACK ON THE MOUND?

Shane: The target is mid-season, around the All-Star break, if all goes well. I’m focused on coming back 100%—no rushing or risking re-injury. I’ve been refining my mechanics, improving velocity, and sharpening pitch sequencing. Injuries are part of the game, but how you handle them defines your career.

Q: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED?

Shane: Patience. Baseball moves fast, but this injury forced me to slow down and listen to my body. It’s also given me a deeper sense of gratitude for doing what I love and reminded me how vital a strong support system is—Kara has been incredible.

Q: KARA, HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE BEEN FOR YOU?

Kara: It’s been tough but rewarding. I’ve always cheered him on, but this was about guiding him through uncertainty. I saw his true strength. It was also a blessing—we had rare time together, settling in, preparing for our baby, and enjoying the little things.

Q: SPEAKING OF YOUR BABY, HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO INTRODUCE HIM TO THE WORLD OF BASEBALL?

Shane: I can’t wait. I mean, I’m not going to be the dad who pushes him into baseball if he’s not into it, but let’s be real—he’s going to grow up around it, so I have a feeling he’s going to love it. I’m excited to take him to his first game, having him in the stands with Kara watching me pitch, and just sharing that experience as a family.

Q: LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NURSERY!

Kara: We went for a neutral, cozy look with a subtle cowboy vibe—dark wood tones and simple, calming decor. Nothing over-thetop. We’re also big fans of biophilic design, incorporating natural elements throughout the house, with pieces from The Viridian Scottsdale in nearly every room.

Q: KARA, TELL US ABOUT YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES.

Kara: I have a brand called Kinlike, which started as a way to bring women together. I host events where women can connect and shop my clothing line. It’s all about creating community and empowering women. I also own Telt Skincare with my sister; it’s all-natural, made from tallow. I love having things of my own outside of Shane’s career.

Q: KARA, HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF BALANCING MOTHERHOOD WITH YOUR BUSINESSES?

Kara: Balance will be a work in progress. Thankfully, Shane and I are great at supporting each other’s goals, so we’ll figure it out.

Q: ANY FINAL THOUGHTS AS YOU EMBARK ON PARENTHOOD (DUE THIS MONTH!)?

Shane: Being a dad is number one. And professionally, I’m excited to get back on the mound, healthy and ready to compete.

THE UNTOLD STORY: SARA O’MEARA & YVONNE FEDDERSON’S

From Young Hollywood Starlets to 90-Year-Old Roommates: An Exclusive with This Inspiring Duo

Always impeccably dressed and flawlessly made-up, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson radiate timeless elegance at 90 years young. But beyond their stunning appearance lies something even more remarkable—their unshakable bond and tireless dedication to helping children in need.

From the dazzling lights of Hollywood to decades of selfless service through Childhelp, one of the nation’s leading organizations combating child abuse, their journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. And while they’ve built countless homes for children around the world, they’ve also created a home of their own—living together as lifelong friends, proving that home is truly where the heart is.

In honor of our Home Issue, we celebrate their inspiring journey of friendship, faith, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place, all while sharing laughter, meals, and memories under one roof.

A Fateful Meeting

Sarah and Yvonne first crossed paths on the set of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a beloved American sitcom.

“We met during filming,” Sara recalls. “Yvonne was already a part of the show, and I had just graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse.”

Both were bright-eyed and ambitious, with Hollywood dreams lighting up their future. But what started as a professional encounter quickly transformed into an unshakable bond.

“We realized we had so much in common—our faith, our values, our passion for giving back,” Yvonne adds.

Their friendship deepened when they began volunteering together at the Hollywood Presbyterian Church and performing for U.S. troops through USO shows.

“We’d travel on the weekends, performing in camps and bases, and it was during these tours that we realized we were meant to do more,” Sara reflects.

Their Hollywood experience brought them in close circles with legends like Elvis Presley, Bob Hope, and Debbie Reynolds.

“Elvis was such a kind soul,” Yvonne reminisces. “He always asked about our work with the children, and I truly believe he would have been one of our biggest supporters if he were still with us. I even dated him for a while—he was charming, respectful, and always a gentleman.”

Bob Hope and his wife Dolores were also key supporters, hosting fundraisers at their home and rallying Hollywood’s elite to the cause.

“Phyllis Diller was another who just couldn’t say no,” Yvonne remembers fondly. “She’d always show up, cracking jokes and keeping the energy high.”

A Mission Born Amid Disaster

In 1959, fate intervened in their lives in the most unexpected way. While on a USO Goodwill Tour in Japan following a devastating typhoon, Sara and Yvonne stumbled upon a heart-wrenching scene—11 orphaned children, huddled together in the cold.

“They had no shoes, no warm clothes,” Sara recounts. “When we asked where their parents were, all they could say was, ‘No Mama-san, no Papa-san.’”

Determined not to leave them behind, the women snuck the children into their hotel room, hiding them from their commanding officer.

“We couldn’t just turn away. We knew in our hearts we had to do something,” Yvonne says. “We called in favors, collected food, and turned our hotel room into a makeshift shelter.”

The colonel overseeing their tour was less than pleased.

“He nearly had a heart attack when he found out,” Sara laughs. “He told us, ‘Get rid of them immediately,’ but we just couldn’t do it.”

What followed was an uphill battle—visiting orphanage after orphanage only to find them overcrowded. They eventually found solace in the home of a compassionate Japanese woman named Mama Kin.

“Her home was in terrible condition, but she looked us in the eye and said she’d trust us if we promised to help,” says Sara.

Thus began their lifelong mission to rescue and protect children.

“We put on a show for the troops, raising enough money to fix up Mama Kin’s home and provide for the children,” Yvonne explains. “That’s when we knew— this wasn’t just a one-time effort. This was our calling.”

From Japan to Vietnam

Returning to Hollywood, Sara and Yvonne continued their film careers while working tirelessly to raise funds for their newfound cause.

“So many celebrities helped us organize fundraisers, and we ended up building four orphanages in Japan.”

However, when the Vietnam War escalated, they were approached by Congress to expand their efforts to aid the thousands of mixed-race orphans left abandoned.

“We built orphanages, hospitals, and schools. It was overwhelming, but we knew it was God’s work,” Yvonne says.

One of their most significant accomplishments came during Operation Babylift in 1975, where they helped evacuate hundreds of children from war-torn Vietnam.

“It was heartbreaking,” Sara recalls. “But every single child we brought to the U.S. was adopted, and that made it all worth it.”

In 2001, my wife, Lorrie, and I walked side-by-side together placing door hangers on homes throughout the Greater Phoenix area to market our newly formed construction company. Our first projects were custom, built-in media niches. Not long after, we built our 1st home addition; a primary bathroom in Scottsdale.

Fast-forward 24 years, and to date, we have completed projects ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000 with a focus on Kitchen Remodels, Whole House Remodels, and Home Additions & Guest Houses/ADU’s.

Nancy Reagan and Presidential Support

Throughout their journey, Sara and Yvonne found support from influential figures, including First Lady Nancy Reagan.

“Nancy was the one who told us, ‘You’re just the two to do it,’ when it came to tackling child abuse in America,” Sara says. “She and Ronald Reagan personally supported us, sending us a check the very next day to start our first residential treatment center.”

“She had such a vision for child welfare,” Yvonne adds. “And with their help, we were able to grow Childhelp into what it is today.”

A Miraculous Healing

Sara’s journey took a deeply personal turn when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in her early 30s.

“I was given less than three months to live,” she shares. “It was everywhere, and I was devastated. I had two little boys to raise.”

Despite the grim prognosis, Sara’s unwavering faith led her to a spiritual encounter that changed everything.

“I heard about a healing service at the Shrine Auditorium, and I knew I had to go,” she says. “I wasn’t even supposed to leave the hospital, but I prayed and believed.”

She recounts the moment with tears in her eyes.

“I felt my body lift, and I saw a pink cloud surrounding me. The evangelist called out, ‘There is a woman in the balcony being healed of cancer,’ and I knew it was me.”

Miraculously, Sara’s cancer disappeared, and she credits that moment with reaffirming her life’s purpose.

Living Together

After their husbands passed away, Sara and Yvonne moved in together.

“We’ve been through everything together,” Yvonne says. “Living together just made sense.”

Their home is more than just a house— it’s a living scrapbook of their journey. Framed photos of the children they’ve helped, letters from supporters, and keepsakes from their travels line the walls.

“Every room has a story,” Sara reflects. “From Japan to Vietnam to Hollywood, it’s all here.”

Their friendship is filled with warmth and humor.

“We have breakfast together most mornings,” Sara says. “Yvonne reminds me to eat healthy while I sneak in a pastry.” Yvonne laughs, “She thinks I don’t notice, but I do!”

They cherish their nightly dinners, reflecting on their day with gratitude and laughter.

“We argue over who’s cooking, but we’re closer than sisters,” Sara says with a grin.

“Some nights, we put on an old movie and laugh at how young we looked,” Yvonne shares. “And how much hairspray we used!” Sara adds.

Despite their busy lives, they cherish their time at home.

“It’s our little sanctuary. It’s even a headquarters for Childhelp operations,” Yvonne says.

The Childhelp Impact

Since its founding, Childhelp has grown to become one of the largest and most impactful child advocacy organizations in the country.

“We’ve helped over 13 million children, but it’s not enough,” Sara says. “Every day, we see more cases of abuse, and it breaks our hearts. But we keep going, because these children need us. Whether you’re young or old, rich or poor—find your passion and use it to help others.”

Big Deals & Bromance

When Arizona real estate powerhouse Scott Grigg joined forces with Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing stars Matt and Josh Altman, it was more than just a business move—it was a game-changer. Now, one year later, the Grigg’s Group powered by The Altman Brothers is making waves in the Arizona luxury real estate market like never before. We caught up with Scott and Matt to talk about their journey, their bromance, and their big plans for the future.

FIRST, OUR HEARTS ARE WITH OUR NEIGHBORS IN CALIFORNIA IMPACTED BY THE FIRES. MATT, THIS HAS UNDOUBTEDLY BEEN A DIFFICULT TIME FOR SO MANY—HOW HAS THIS AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY?

Matt: It’s devastating. I live in Sherman Oaks, and the destruction is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. We had the chance to go in with the sheriff’s department, and all you see for miles are chimneys standing alone—a heartbreaking sight. Personally, I was lucky. I had a home in the Hollywood Hills that, to this day, I don’t understand how it didn’t burn down. My brother called me, telling me to turn on the news and watch it burn, but miraculously, our street was spared. Professionally, it’s been one of the busiest times of my life. Thousands of families are looking for homes, and the challenge is finding solutions that fit their needs quickly. Many people were underinsured or didn’t have insurance, so it’s a very difficult time.

SCOTT, WITH THE CONSISTENT INFLUX OF CALIFORNIANS INTO ARIZONA OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU OBSERVED IN THE LOCAL MARKET?

Scott: We’ve been seeing a steady migration from California to Arizona for a while, but the recent fires are accelerating that movement. Arizona offers a better quality of life, more space, and a growing luxury

market that’s attractive to those who are leaving LA and surrounding areas. Since the fires, we’ve had several clients come into town looking for rentals and exploring permanent relocation options.

When we partnered with Matt and Josh, we saw the potential in bridging the gap between California and Arizona real estate markets. This past year has been about creating those synergies and helping clients transition seamlessly.

CONGRATULATIONS ON CELEBRATING ONE YEAR OF THE GRIGG’S GROUP POWERED BY THE ALTMAN BROTHERS. WHAT DOES THIS MILESTONE MEANT TO YOU?

Scott: It’s an incredible journey. We’ve gone from an idea to a powerhouse real estate group, and the results speak for themselves. In our first year, we closed over $338 million in sales- a huge leap from the previous year. The support and trust from our clients is overwhelming.

Matt: Scott is being humble. The way he runs things in Arizona is phenomenal. When we first discussed the partnership, it made perfect sense. Scott is someone we trust, someone we knew had the same work ethic, and someone who shared our vision of delivering a luxury experience to clients. It’s amazing to see how much we’ve grown in just one year. We’ve created a brand presence in Arizona that simply didn’t exist before.

HOW DID THIS PARTNERSHIP INITIALLY COME ABOUT?

Scott: Believe it or not, it goes back over a decade. I met Josh and Matt through a mutual client who was buying in Santa Monica. We hit it off right away, and over the years, we kept in touch, bouncing ideas off each other and working on deals together. Most of all, we became great friends. I event went to their weddings. When the luxury market in Arizona started to hit $1,200 a square foot, it was the right time to bring the Altman Brothers here. CONTINUED

Scott Grigg & The Altman Brothers Get Candid

Matt: We’ve always had a great relationship. Scott is one of those guys you can send a client to and not worry about a thing. We knew he was the right person to help us expand into Arizona, and it’s been a fantastic collaboration.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST WINS OVER THE PAST YEAR?

Scott: We had a record-breaking sale in Paradise Valley at $1,685 per square foot, which was awesome. The client was a long-time Altman Brothers client from LA who relocated for the quality of life here in Arizona. We also expanded into new markets like Lake Havasu, which Matt initially discovered.

Matt: Lake Havasu is a game-changer. I didn’t know much about it until a developer invited me out, and I was blown away. It’s not just a spring break town anymore; it’s evolving into a high-end destination with incredible luxury properties right on the water. Scott and I saw the potential and decided to dive in.

MATT, HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH BRAVO’S MILLION DOLLAR LISTING INFLUENCED YOUR BUSINESS?

Matt: Bravo gave us a platform we could have never imagined. The exposure was phenomenal, and it opened doors to clients from all over the world. But at the end of the day, what sets us apart is our work ethic. The show was great, but our success comes from working around the clock and delivering results. Josh and I worked our way up, and that grind never stops.

Scott: Having Matt and Josh’s Bravo reputation in the Arizona market helps bring attention to what we are doing. People recognize the brand, but they also see the quality of service and dedication we bring to each client.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2025?

Scott: Our goal is to hit half a billion dollars in sales. We’re expanding our presence in Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, and looking

into other luxury markets across Arizona. We’re also growing our team but keeping it boutique—quality over quantity.

Matt: We’re also focused on enhancing our global reach. When you list with us, you’re not just getting local exposure— you’re getting national and international exposure. That’s what sets us apart.

IF YOU WEREN’T IN REAL ESTATE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Matt: I’d be a scuba diving instructor. I love being underwater; it’s my escape.

Scott: Probably a golfer. Or a teeth model—Matt likes to tease me about that.

ANY WILD REAL ESTATE STORIES YOU CAN SHARE?

Scott: Years ago, I sold a house where the seller-a Russian mail-order bride-re fused to leave after closing. She wouldn’t get off the floor and had to be removed by the police.

Matt: I once did a showing while a bur glar was hiding in the closet. We had to act like nothing was wrong and get out safely. Crazy things happen in this business!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELVES?

Scott: Celebrate the wins. We used to go out for dinner after big closings, and now it’s just onto the next. Taking the time to appreciate the journey is important.

Matt: Write everything down—every transaction, every story. It’s easy to for get, and those moments are what make this job special.

Stay Skyeview: A Home That Belongs to the Mountain

A LOOK INSIDE THE VALLEY’S MOST ESTEEMED DESERT RETREAT, WHERE EXCLUSIVITY IS MADE ACCESSIBLE

Trent Hancock wasn’t looking for his next big project when he found Skyeview—he was just driving, something he often does to clear his head. But as he wound up 56th Street, a “For Sale” sign caught his eye. Hidden behind a gate, the property was easy to miss, but Trent had a feeling. He called immediately.

The house had been sitting untouched, a 1970s relic left behind as interest rates climbed. It wasn’t much to look at—asbestos shake tile, Spanish lace stucco, and concrete everywhere. A pool fence blocked the view entirely. The previous owner had filled the lot with trees, sealing himself off from the world.

But Trent saw more, especially being the third generation of the Hancock family- the family behind Camelot Homes.

“It had bones,” he says. “And it had the view. Everything else could be reimagined.”

Trent had always been drawn to projects that required vision. Skyeview wasn’t just another remodel—it was a test. Could a luxury rental feel like home? Could a private retreat match the amenities of a five-star resort? Could something this small live large?

“People don’t need 10,000 square feet to feel luxury,” Trent says. “They need thoughtful design. A home that feels good to be in.”

The previous owner had prioritized privacy so much that he lost sight of what made the property special. Trent knew immediately that had to change.

“It was like he built a fortress against the most incredible backdrop you could ask for.”

That backdrop became the focus. Skyeview had to feel open, effortless. Every wall, every material, every finish needed to complement what was already there.

“Camelback Mountain is granite, and this home feels like it was carved right into it,” he says. “It looks like it could have been here for a hundred years.”

The design became an exercise in restraint. The exterior is clad in Lunawood, a thermally modified wood from Norway chosen for its durability against Arizona’s harsh climate. Trent loved that it wouldn’t need treatment; that it would fade naturally over time.

“The best materials age with the home,” he explains. “You let the desert do its thing.”

Every inch of Skyeview is designed to elevate the experience. The wraparound decks dissolve the barrier between indoors and out, creating a seamless connection to the breathtaking desert landscape. The soaking tubs transform a simple bath into an immersive, almost meditative retreat. The trust-system bar invites guests to indulge at their own pace, reinforcing the effortless luxury that defines the space.

The pool is nothing short of a private resort, complete with lounge chairs, a cabana, a jacuzzi, and a sauna, offering guests a spa-like sanctuary where relaxation meets refinement. The open-concept kitchen spills into the living room, framed by floorto-ceiling glass doors that erase the divide between inside and the vast expanse of the Valley below. Every space is furnished to perfection, a carefully curated balance of modern elegance and natural warmth, ensuring that Skyeview is not just a place to stay, but an experience that lingers long after guests depart.

It’s a personal resort without limits, and it adapts effortlessly to whatever guests need. It’s been a setting for intimate gatherings, girl weekends, wellness retreats, corporate offsites, and late-night conversations by the fire. But at its core, it’s about connection— to nature, to others, to yourself.

“The outdoor tubs might be my favorite feature,” Trent says. “There’s something surreal about soaking in hot water while looking out over the entire Valley. You feel like you’re on top of the world.”

Skyeview isn’t just a rental—it’s a feeling. A place where time slows, where the desert reminds you to breathe, where every sunset looks like it was painted just for you.

“Skyeview isn’t meant to be sold—it’s meant to be shared,” he says.

Properties like this, perched high on Camelback Mountain with unrivaled views and rare privacy, are almost never accessible to the public. Rather than turning it into just another private estate, the vision is to preserve it as an experience—a place where both locals and visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the desert from a vantage point few ever get to see.

“Skyeview is more than a home; it’s a piece of the mountain, a retreat that blends luxury, design, and nature in a way that deserves to be appreciated, not hidden away. Luxury isn’t about square footage,” Trent says. “It’s about how a place makes you feel.”

Katrina Barrett— Unfiltered, Unapologetic, and Unstoppable

Career-defining moments, billionaire clients, tough decisions, and juggling real estate with motherhood

In this candid Q&A, Katrina Barrett reveals the highs, lows, and bold moves that shaped her career. From mergers and billionaire clients to tough decisions and balanced real estate with motherhood, nothing is off-limits. She shares hard-earned lessons, breaking points, and the mindset that keeps her on top.

Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL BEING CONSTANTLY REFERRED TO YOU AS THE #1 REALTOR IN ARIZONA?

KB: Embarrassed. I never measured success by others—It’s always me versus me. When I started in real estate, I didn’t even know what was big or not in terms of volume. When I was in competitive swimming, it was about beating my own time, not the competition. In business now, we ignore titles and rankings, focusing solely on how happy the clients are.

Q: DID YOUR CHILDHOOD SHAPE YOU INTO THE HUSTLER YOU ARE TODAY?

KB: I grew up in Tucson, which was tightknit community, but I always wanted something bigger. I told my parents early on that I wanted to wear a suit every day, work in a skyscraper  and be nothing like them.

My mom was a tax attorney who worked from home. She worked incredibly hard and was someone who valued intellect over appearance. Her philosophy was, “You want me for my brain, or you don’t want me at all.” That mindset shaped me, and I was lucky to have a mom who coached intellectual value.

Q: HOW DID COMPETITIVE SWIMMING FURTHER SHAPE YOUR MINDSET?

KB: Swimming demands discipline—hours of repetition, pushing limits. I was a University of Miami swimmer, and while I didn’t always love it, it built endurance, resilience, and grit—skills that now drive my business.

Lux Image by Colton Simon

Q: DO YOU STILL SWIM?

KB: No. A while back, I was invited to a 5 a.m. swim at Arizona Country Club after 20 years out of the pool. We swam for an hour, and afterward, the guys shook my hand and said, “Wow, you really were a swimmer.” That was my comeback—and retirement—on the same day.

Q: BEFORE REAL ESTATE CAME FINANCE, YES?

KB: I started in and am still in finance. When I was young, I was closing big deals and managing high-profile clients without intimidation. Looking back, I don’t know where I found the energy or guts. Now, I overanalyze everything. Age brings a mindset of risk mitigation over return.

Q: IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

KB: Buy everything. Literally. If I had known how much the market was going to skyrocket after 2008, I would have put every dollar I had into real estate. Arizona dirt was and continues to be a bullish bright spot.

Q: BEFORE ACQUIRING WALT DANLEY, YOU FOUNDED LOCAL BOARD, NOW REBRANDED AS LOCAL LUXURY. WHAT SPARKED THAT?

KB: It started out of necessity. Coming from finance, I saw brokerages as sales-driven, not true consultants. Local Board began with seven friends at a diner—early on, people mistook us for a zoning board, but we’ve since improved our marketing.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN LAUNCHING A BROKERAGE?

KB: Building the infrastructure was the hardest part. With no brokerage experience, I relied on systems, refused to charge desk fees, and took on full risk. I still haven’t perfected it, but I’m grateful for my agent family and learn from them daily.

Listing: 4950 E. Rockridge Rd.
Listing: 20646 N 112th St.

Q: HOW DID YOU END UP ACQUIRING WALT DANLEY?

KB: I was in merger talks elsewhere when Walt Danley unexpectedly reached out, and when someone like Walt Danley calls, you listen. Walt was the biggest name in Paradise Valley real estate for 40 years. A total legend. People still call me and ask if I own “Walt Disney” instead of “Walt Danley.” No, not Disney—Danley. Walt had to move fast. I flew to Chicago, planning to buy his firm independently. But Christie’s said, “Wrong move—we are the biggest asset in this deal.”

Q: WERE THEY RIGHT?

KB: 100%. At the time, I was thinking, “Why am I paying all this money?” The fees were massive, and I was already spending a fortune on my own marketing. But what I didn’t fully grasp at the time was the power of a global network and that you really are stronger with a gang of other high performing agents in your corner in every luxury city. The ownership with Christie’s is priceless and to thank for my recent success.

Q: YOU HAD TO FIRE 100 PEOPLE LAST YEAR. HOW DID THAT UNFOLD?

KB: When I acquired Walt Danley, we took on a lot of agents. And I had never really let anyone into our little protected bubble before that and took criticism from people I had never even met. Up until then, it was handpicked people— people I knew and trusted.

Many of them had different expectations. Some hadn’t sold a home in two years. And we pay for everything, charging zero desk fees. So, I had to ask, “If you haven’t sold a home in two years, are you a full time luxury agent?” CONTINUED >

Q: HOW DID THEY REACT?

KB: People were furious. The anger was misdirected, coming straight at me. It was hard, but then I met someone high up at Whisper Rock, and he offered advice that changed my approach.

He told me:

You’re doing this all wrong. Right now, they hate you when they leave. Instead, you need to tell them this:

“Larry Fitzgerald walks into Whisper Rock, ready to write a $500,000 check to join. They ask, ‘What’s your handicap?”’And he says, ‘30.’”

Whisper Rock tells him, “Well, our barrier to entry is 18. But we’d love to take your check once you get there.”

Two years later, Larry walks in and says, “My handicap is now 9.” And they say, “Fantastic, you’re in.”’

Q: DID YOU CHANGE YOUR APPROACH AFTER HEARING THAT?

KB: Yes. Instead of cutting people loose, I started saying: “Show me you can do it. Go get some experience and then come back.” Six months after being so angry at me, people started coming back- apologizing.

Q: WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE ARIZONA REAL ESTATE MARKET RIGHT NOW?

KB: It’s in a transition phase. Inventory is still low, demand is high, and locals are finally starting to move again. But the real shift is the flood of out-of-state buyers. 80% of our highend buyers are coming from Washington.

The California fires will undoubtedly skyrocket demand in Arizona. The fires devastated some of the most expensive communities in California. We’re talking 13,000 homes, over $10 million each, gone.

Locally, we have around 200 active listings in Paradise Valley. That’s it. But thousands of luxury buyers are about to flood the market. It’s not a question of if—it’s when.

Q: YOU WORK WITH SOME OF THE MOST HIGH-PROFILE CLIENTS IN THE COUNTRY—ATHLETES, CELEBRITIES, BILLIONAIRES. HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE THAT WORLD?

KB: Discretion is everything in luxury real estate. Clients trust me because I don’t talk, tout closings or show off- let’s face it, I’m really not living the lifestyle either, all I do is work.

That’s why I initially hesitated to market myself—I feared crossing a line. But they love it. Everyone wants to see their reel and buzz on the Gram. Marketing is essential, especially in down times.

Q: ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS WORKING WITH CELEBS?

KB: Of course, but I won’t talk about them. High-profile buyers play by different rules. Billionaires don’t do inspections, negotiate, or hesitate. They seek opportunities, not just homes, often eyeing multiple properties at once. Deals happen fast—cash, no contingencies, no approvals needed. They’re not buying a first home; they’re collecting assets like art.

Q: WHAT AREAS ARE YOU SEEING THE MOST MOVEMENT?

KB: We’re seeing a major migration pattern, specifically, Paradise Valley and Arcadia. The demand is off the charts. Park City is on fire and inventory is low. Dallas is becoming a major luxury hub. Wealthy buyers are loving the privacy and space of Montana and Idaho. And so many clients want a vacation home in Cabo.

Q: ARE YOU MAKING DEALS ALL OVER?

KB:  If my clients are moving, I want to be the one helping them. I’ve been flying to Texas a lot. Utah is practically going to be my second home this summer.

Q: DO YOU THINK ARIZONA’S MARKET WILL CONTINUE TO GROW?

KB: Yes. Arizona is still undervalued compared to places like California and Washington. I think we’re about to see a 20-25% increase in luxury home prices over the next few years. We have low tax and no natural disasters, relatively low traffic and the best restaurant scene around.

Q: ARE YOU TELLING PEOPLE TO BUY NOW?

KB: If you’re a cash buyer, get off the bench. Interest rates don’t matter if you’re paying cash, and by the time mortgage rates drop, the competition will be insane.

Q: SHIFTING TO PERSONAL LIFE… YOU HAVE THREE KIDS. HOW DO YOU BALANCE EVERYTHING?

KB: I don’t. Or at least, I don’t do it well. I rely so much on other moms; they are incredible to me. I don’t even know why they’re so great to me, but they are.

Q: DO YOU GET TIME WITH YOUR KIDS?

KB: I try, but it’s hard. I get home at 10 p.m. most nights. I missed my son’s game last week because a showing popped up last minute, and that showing didn’t even end up selling their house.

Listing: 20646 N 112th St.
Listing: 4950 E. Rockridge Rd.

It eats at me. But the thing is, I signed up for this, and I love it, but it doesn’t make missing my kids’ moments any easier. I also know that what I’m building is for them. They see me work hard, they see what it takes, and I hope that one day they’ll understand and respect the sacrifices. I love what I do, but I also know that I can’t run at this speed forever.

Q: IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO ENTREPRENEURS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

KB: Don’t take investors or loans. Grow organically. It’s easy to spend someone else’s money. It’s hard to spend your own. And if it’s your money, you’ll make smarter choices spending it on the right things.

I see so many people rush to take outside money because they want to grow fast. But when you grow too fast, you make bad decisions. You spend recklessly. You lose control.

The people who make it long-term are the ones who reinvest in themselves—not the ones who burn through investor cash.

Q: LOOKING BACK, WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY?

KB: I would have bet more on myself. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but I’ve also learned from every single one of them. At the end of the day, I feel good about how many people we have brought into an intimate circle of trust and the beautiful community of clients that are our Arizona population. I bleed AZ love and really strive to support locals.

Q: FINAL WORDS FOR THOSE WHO ADMIRE YOUR SUCCESS?

KB: Work harder than anyone else. Learn from failure. Don’t forget the human you are serving. And never wait for the perfect moment—just do, learn, and “work while you wait.”

Actor Joe Mantegna Takes Center Stage in Scottsdale

A Shot of Hollywood, a Splash of Stories, and a Twist of Tequila

Legendary actor Joe Mantegna—renowned for The Godfather Part III, Criminal Minds, and his Tony-winning stage career—joins Scottsdale’s Celebrity Wine & Spirits Festival on March 15th. A true connoisseur, his passion for fine spirits makes him a perfect fit for this exclusive event.

In a one-on-one with media mogul Dave Pratt, Joe sipped, savored, and shared stories about The Godfather, Dean Martin, and his go-to drink.

CELEBRITIES WITH WHISKEY, WINE AND MORE. FOR YOU, WHY TEQUILA AND WHAT MAKES YOUR BRAND SO SPECIAL?

Señor Rio is tequila in its purest form— no additives, sugars, or coloring, just a family recipe passed down for three generations. I’ve always found tequila unique since it comes from a plant. You can find Señor Rio in Total Wine stores nationwide, but for me, it’s best straight and chilled, sipped like a fine wine.

THE FOUNDERS OF SEÑOR RIO ARE FROM GILBERT, AND NOW YOU’RE AN OWNER. HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT?

My friend Jack Maxwell, host of  Booze Traveler, traveled the world tasting drinks. When Debbie Medina shared that she had run Señor Rio with her late husband and needed a partner, Jack mentioned it to me. I was intrigued, we met, and I knew it was a venture worth pursuing.

TELL US ABOUT THE WE CARE CRUSADE .

We Care Crusade, Señor Rio’s charitable wing, was inspired by Debbie’s grandchildren and my daughter with autism. While I can provide for her, many families struggle, so we pledged a portion of profits to support them.

TALK ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL LOVE FOR ARIZONA.

I’ve been hosting  Gun Stories for about 15 years, which often takes us to Gunsight, Arizona. Growing up in the ’50s and ’60s on cowboy shows and westerns, I’ve always loved that old-school Americana feel. Being Italian, parts of Sicily actually remind me of Arizona’s landscape. The state’s natural beauty is incredible, and I’ve got a soft spot for Prescott—it’s a great throwback to the Old West. Plus, the fact that the Cubs do spring training in Arizona doesn’t hurt!

Explore the new PV, where firstto-market concepts and local favorites are just the beginning

“I’m lucky to make a living doing what kids dream of.”

SPEAKING OF CHICAGO,

HOW ARE THE CUBS GONNA BE THIS YEAR?

I’m just grateful I was alive to see them win after 108 years! They finally did it for my mom when she turned 100—fitting, since they were already on an eightyear losing streak when she was born in 1915. I won’t be greedy, but I sure hope to see another championship… hopefully, much sooner than 108 years!

FROM CRIMINAL MINDS TO THE GODFATHER PART III, YOU HAVE PLAYED BOTH GOOD GUYS AND BAD. WHICH IS MORE FUN?

If the role is good, it’s all fun. I’m lucky to make a living doing what kids dream of. Whether it’s Joey in  The Godfather or Fat Tony on  The Simpsons, they’re just different shades of the same world—and I love it all.

CONGRATS ON NEARLY 20 YEARS WITH CRIMINAL MINDS ON CBS. WHAT’S IT LIKE ON SET?

The show may be dark, but the set is the opposite—that balance makes it work. We honor the real men and women in this job by bringing intensity, fear, and shock. But in the end, we’re just the pretend version, leaving room for fun. I can play an FBI agent, but I could never be one—which is why I have so much respect for them.

BEING A HUGE DEAN MARTIN FAN, I GOTTA ASK... WHAT WAS IT LIKE PLAYING HIM IN THE RAT PACK?

Well, Dave, being offered that role was a dream come true. I admired and respected him as a singer, actor, and personality, so portraying him was both exciting and intimidating. I did extensive research, got to know the Martin family, and gave it everything I had. It’s one of my top five roles, and the only one that earned me Emmy and Golden Globe nominations—proof, I hope, that I did Dean justice. With a great script, cast, and crew, it was truly a career highlight.

WHEN VOICING FAT TONY ON THE SIMPSONS , ARE YOU JUST GIVEN THE LINES OR DO YOU KNOW THE ENTIRE PLOT AND HUMOR WHILE LAYING DOWN THE TRACKS?

They usually send the script ahead of time, so I know what’s coming. We often do full cast reads, which are a blast—it’s one of the rare times we’re all together. Sometimes, there’s even an invited audience, which makes it even more special. It’s a great way to celebrate a show that’s been going strong for over 35 years.

YOU ALSO DID VOICE WORK IN CARS 2 .  IS DOING VOICE CHARACTERS CHALLENGING?

When I’m in front of the mic, I can’t help but get physical—it’s like the character takes over. It’s amazing to use my voice as an instrument, whether for animation, audiobooks, or commercials, without worrying about the visuals.

CHARLES BARKLEY AND TOM CHAMBERS WILL BOTH BE AT THE CELEBRITY WINE & SPIRITS FESTIVAL. WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER PLAY ONE-ON-ONE?

I don’t wanna play anybody one-on-one. In a game to 20? There’s a good chance it would be 20 to nothing.

FROM THE WORLD OF PRO WRESTLING, THE BELLA TWINS WILL ALSO BE AT THE FESTIVAL. IF JOE MANTEGNA WAS A PRO WRESTLER, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR SIGNATURE MOVE?

I would name it The Tequila Slam. I’d take a nice shot glass of Señor Rio, sip it, and then lay on the mat and take a nap.

Celebrity Wine & Spirits will be held at Scottsdale Civic Center on March 15th, 2025

WESTERN ART ICONS

Painter Tom Gilleon and Photographer Rusty Yates

Discuss Their Debut at Scottsdale Ferrari ArtWeek

From March 20-23, Scottsdale Ferrari

ArtWeek will turn Scottsdale’s WestWorld into a premier destination for art enthusiasts, solidifying the Valley of the Sun as a global art hub alongside events like London’s Frieze Art Fair and Miami’s Art Basel.

Among the standout participants are Tom Gilleon, a Montana-based oil painter renowned for his modern interpretations of Native American and Mountain West themes, and Rusty Yates, a fine art photographer from Texas Hill Country celebrated for capturing the beauty and mystery of Western landscapes.

Tom Gilleon

For Tom Gilleon, painting is both a passion and a connection to his roots. “My time at Walt Disney Imagineering taught me how visual art connects with audiences,” he explains. “I hope visitors leave inspired by my work and with a deeper appreciation for the Mountain West and the Native American heritage I inherited from my grandmother.”

about ships and whales and his own childhood, and he drew me pictures while he talked. I thought everyone did that. Inspired by him, I loved to go outside and use a stick to draw giant pictures in the white sand that covered our front yard.

RY: I bought my first camera in the ’80s while managing Angelina Farms to document the herd.

Rusty Yates, meanwhile, infuses his photography with a deep sense of purpose.

“With over 40 years in photography, my work reflects the elemental mystery of my subjects and my dedication to ethical land stewardship,” he shares.

“With 20,000 attendees, this event offers their art the exposure of nearly eight years in a traditional gallery,” says Richard King of KingArts, their exclusive representative. Here’s our exclusive Q&A with these remarkable artists.

What first ignited your artistic passion?

TG: Most nights when I was growing up in my grandparents’ little house in Starke, Florida, my Scottish grandpa would tell me stories

Spending long days on the ranch surrounded by stunning landscapes and light, I caught the photography bug—and the rest is history.

Western icons are a central theme in your work. Could you share the story behind one of your most celebrated pieces?

TG: Back in the ’80s, while transitioning from Disney illustrator to fine artist, I painted a tipi on a large canvas in my Montana studio, unsure if it would resonate. To my surprise, it sold immediately, and the gallery wanted more. Tipis, like blank canvases, continue to inspire me—just as they did for the Native Americans who painted their stories on them. This inspiration lives on in works like  Gibbous Ravenous

CONTINUED >

Tom Gilleon

RY: Around 1980, after a long day of ranching, I captured a photo of our horses backlit against the setting sun. Years later, I transformed that image, adding backgrounds in Photoshop, to create Angelina’s Horses

Which of your creations holds the most special place in your heart?

TG: I strive to give my best to every painting, no matter the size. Recently, I’ve focused on larger, museum-scale works, like  Blood Chief, a 50-by-50inch portrait of a Native leader completed in 2024. If you visit ArtWeek, you’ll notice a small bronze plaque on the stretcher bar with the Roman numerals “MMXX,” marking 2020—the year I began creating these large-scale pieces, a project I humorously call my “20-20 vision.”

RY:  The day before Thanksgiving, my mother, Elsie Yates, passed away at 105. A gifted gardener, she taught me to love nature and flowers, especially her favorite, the Texas American basket flower. I created a still-life in her honor, aptly titled Ode to Elsie.

What else inspires your creative process?

TG: The early 20th-century photographer Edward S. Curtis, known as the “Shadow Catcher,” has long inspired me with his 40,000 portraits of American Indians from over 80 tribes west of the Mississippi.

RY: Some suggest I should “focus” on one subject, but I refuse. From horses to wildflowers, landscapes to insects, I’m drawn to the elemental mystery in their beauty. My goal is to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.

Fresh Blooms, Fresh Vibes

FROM SCRIPT TO SADDLE

HOW YELLOWSTONE IGNITED A WESTERN SPORTS PHENOMENON

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

It began as a story—one of power, legacy, and grit unfolding across the sweeping landscapes of Yellowstone. But beyond the Dutton Ranch, another battle was brewing—not on a Hollywood set, but in the dirt of real-life arenas.

This wasn’t about scripted drama. This was about horsemen and women competing for history.

Now, as the Cactus Reining Classic returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale from March 14th-22nd, that legacy rides on. For fans of Taylor Sheridan’s  The Last Cowboy—the unscripted series chronicling elite riders in the world of reining—this isn’t just another competition. It’s a proving ground, the first step on the road to The Run for a Million, the richest event in reining history.

WHERE FICTION MEETS REALITY

When  Yellowstone premiered in 2018, it reignited a passion for the Western way of life. The code of honor. The bond between rider and horse. The idea that true grit isn’t just something you watch—it’s something you live.

Few understood that better than Taylor Sheridan himself. Long before he became one of Hollywood’s most powerful storytellers, he was a Texas cowboy. Horses weren’t props; they were part of his life. That authenticity led him to create  The Last Cowboy, a love letter to the art of reining that now reaches millions of viewers in 55 countries.

For riders, the Cactus Reining Classic is their chance to earn a coveted spot at The Run for a Million in Las Vegas. For fans, it’s a front-row seat to high-stakes Western drama, real and unscripted.

“If you love  Yellowstone, this is where you need to be,” says Amanda Brumley, founder of the Cactus Reining Classic.

Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone Co-Creator

A STAGE FOR CHAMPIONS

With over 15,000 spectators, 30 different competitions, and some of the most talented riders in the sport, this event has grown into one of the NRHA’s top 10 annual reining competitions.

The stakes are higher than ever. This year’s $20,000 Open Shootout on March 22nd will determine the final top ten riders who will advance to The Run for a Million. For these competitors, the journey is grueling, the competition relentless. But that’s what makes it great.

“Watching this event evolve into one of the premier stops in the sport has been surreal,” says Brumley.

For those who have followed Sheridan’s work— from  Yellowstone to  1883,  1923, and beyond—the Cactus Reining Classic offers something special. A chance to see the world he portrays brought to life by real riders with real stakes.

Sheridan himself is known to attend, providing commentary and supporting riders as a competitor and co-owner of The Run for a Million.

AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE ARENA

Beyond the reining action, attendees can explore Westerninspired shopping, meet renowned riders, and even grab an autograph from some of the sport’s biggest stars. The event also brings a major economic boost to the Valley, generating over 25,000 hotel nights annually.

For fans, it’s more than just a chance to witness elite competition—it’s an opportunity to step inside the world of reining, where passion, precision, and perseverance define every ride.

And for Taylor Sheridan, it’s proof that the Western way of life isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving.

The Cactus Reining Classic runs from March 14-22 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Admission is free.

DEAR DR. LEXI

One of the most confusing and frustrating topics when someone becomes pregnant is getting clarification on their due date. Do you know how we calculate a due date? It is true that we base it on the recall of a last menstrual period; however, an accurate due date is often based on an ultrasound. In fact, it is very important to get an EARLY ultrasound, as the earlier the ultrasound the more accurately dated your pregnancy will be.

Fun fact...your “due date” is when you are considered 40 weeks and 0 days pregnant. Another fun fact...only about 5% of people deliver on their actual due date! That being said, knowing your due date is imperative in receiving appropriate prenatal care. Also, it helps you with your schedule at both home and work as well as preparing to bring your newborn home. To get more information, download my FREE handout at www.drlexihill.com/duedate.

What’s Shaping Homes in 2025

WE ASKED TOP ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, AND BUILDERS TO SHARE WHAT’S TRENDING FOR 2025—HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY.

HOW IS CONTEMPORARY LUXURY HOME DESIGN BECOMING MORE PERSONAL WHILE PRESERVING ITS MODERN EDGE?

Contemporary high-end home design is evolving beyond stark minimalism, embracing a refined balance of sophistication and warmth.

“At Hype Studio, we create elegant yet inviting spaces by integrating natural light, rich materials, and thoughtful details that enhance comfort and personality,” says Mike Alexander, owner of architecture and interior design firm, Hype Studio.

Maximizing daylight shapes Arizona’s dynamic light and shadow, creating a fluid atmosphere. Warm natural materials like wood and stone, paired with rich earth tones, replace cool neutrals for a more inviting feel. Thoughtfully curated art, layered lighting, and seamless indoor-outdoor design—with sliding doors and integrated gardens—enhance depth, ambiance, and a connection to nature.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER DESERT POOL?

At Innovative by Design in Scottsdale, a luxury pool is more than a feature—it’s an extension of the home, designed with intentional movement, function, and cohesion.

Circulation shapes seamless transitions, integrating pathways, entry points, and seating for optimal flow. Thoughtful design leverages topography, sun orientation, and elevation for infinity edges, sunken lounges, or tiered seating. Function follows lifestyle—social pools need expansive decks and outdoor kitchens, while relaxation-focused designs benefit from vanishing edges and spa features. Avid swimmers may prioritize lap lanes or exercise zones.

Cohesion balances form and function—materials must enhance design while ensuring durability. Infinity edges offer stunning views but need precise engineering, just as luxury stone and tile must blend beauty with safety.

~Innovative by Design, Scottsdale

WHAT ARE TOP INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2025?

Luxury design trends favor authenticity, with brushed metals, textured stone, and bold wood grains. Industry reports show 78% of high-end homes now embrace natural materials for both beauty and feel.

“Clients are seeking a blend of organic warmth and modern sophistication, moving away from artificial finishes,” quotes Melissa Mae, Melissa Mae Designs.

Brass and bronze are trending in cabinetry, lighting, and hardware, with market demand for brushed finishes up 40%, prized for their soft sheen and refined elegance.

Homeowners favor bold-veined stone and textured slabs for a seamless, luxurious look. Demand for matte and oil-finished wood has risen 35%, highlighting a shift toward natural aesthetics.

WHAT ELEMENTS DEFINE LUXURY IN HOME DESIGN?

At Constructed Matter, true luxury transcends extravagant finishes and expansive square footage—it’s about creating a home that seamlessly aligns with the way you live.

“Home is more than a place,” say the owners of Constructed Matter. “It’s where life unfolds—morning routines, cherished traditions, and meaningful connections.”

To the Constructed Matter team, luxury means adaptability; for example, a thoughtfully designed home office that transitions into a guest room, or an outdoor space that effortlessly extends your living area.

“Multi-generational living solutions, such as private ADUs or adaptable floor plans, are increasingly popular, offering independence while maintaining close connections.”

Functionality meets indulgence in spa-like bathrooms with steam rooms and soaking tubs, and kitchens designed for efficiency and togetherness.

Brandon Fadden and Joe Ballard, Constructed Matter

WHAT COLOR PALETTES ARE GAINING POPULARITY IN INTERIOR DESIGN?

Color palettes are evolving, with deep jewel tones like emerald green and sapphire blue making a statement.

“People are becoming more adventurous with color, but they want it to feel timeless,” says interior designer Colleen Langdon.

Textured fabrics and traditional patterns, such as damask and paisley, are paired with modern geometrics to add depth and personality.

“Clients want spaces that feel personal and timeless, blending vintage charm with modern function for comfort, balance, and sustainability.”

A key feature of this movement is the blend of old and new. Designers are mixing heirloom pieces with sleek modern furnishings, creating layered spaces that tell a story.

HOW ARE BESPOKE AMENITIES REDEFINING THE LUXURY HOMEBUILDING EXPERIENCE?

SOCON Builders ensures that each project reflects the distinct lifestyle and aspirations of their clients.

“Every home we build is a unique expression of its owner,” says Bryan Grabowy, owner of SOCON Builders. “Our goal is to bring their vision to life, whether through seamless indoor-outdoor living or customized interiors like chef’s kitchens and wellness retreats.”

With 87% of luxury homeowners prioritizing outdoor living spaces, SOCON stays ahead by incorporating features like infinity pools, fully equipped outdoor kitchens, and climate-controlled patios.

The pre-construction phase is critical to a project’s success, and Bryan emphasizes that 70% of project challenges can be mitigated with thorough planning.

“A well-executed pre-construction plan helps us identify potential issues early, ensuring the project remains on schedule and within budget.”

Customization is at the heart of SOCON’s work, with 65% of luxury buyers seeking bespoke amenities such as wine cellars, libraries, and home theaters.

~Bryan Grabowy, SOCON Builders

WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT IN INTERIOR DESIGN?

Outdated trends, such as overly minimalist aesthetics and synthetic materials, are being replaced by natural elements that foster a deeper connection to the environment.

“We’re seeing a shift toward materials that age beautifully, like natural stone and zellige tiles,” says designer Shelby Knoles. “They add timeless warmth and character.”

Homeowners are now favoring rich browns, warm tans, and organic materials that create inviting, enduring spaces. Clients want spaces that reflect their personalities but also stand the test of time.

“Design should evoke a sense of comfort and authenticity. Spaces should feel curated, not cold.”

~Shelby Knoles, P. Emerson Interiors

WHAT’S THE LATEST IN LUXURY RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE?

Mark Candelaria, a renowned name in luxury residential architecture, approaches each project with a philosophy that transcends mere structure—his designs are crafted for his clients, not as monuments to himself.

“The final physical home is just one part of the journey,” Mark explains. “We focus on creating an experience through a collaborative process where the client is deeply involved with the entire design team. This ensures the home has profound meaning and lasting memories.”

Mark’s passion for innovation in luxury design stems from the endless creative possibilities that each new project brings.

“Some of our most iconic designs started with taking a client’s vision and pushing it far beyond anything they could have imagined,” he says.

When it comes to balancing timeless design with current trends, the Candelaria team believes in anchoring every project in the fundamental principles of architecture—scale, proportion, and balance.

“Bold ideas must still embrace timeless principles. With 40+ years and 2,000 homes designed, I’ve learned to navigate trends without being swayed by them.”

~Mark Candelaria, Candelaria Design Associates

WHAT ELEMENTS ARE SHAPING THE

FUTURE OF HIGH-END CABINETRY?

High-end cabinetry trends for 2025 are redefining the balance between aesthetics and functionality, with technology integration leading the way.

According to the founders of Del Sol Cabinets, smart cabinetry solutions—such as integrated lighting, hidden charging stations, and adaptive storage systems—are becoming essential in today’s modern homes.

“Homeowners are embracing these innovations because they make daily life more convenient while maintaining a sleek, sophisticated look,” they explain.

While classic white and grey cabinetry remains a staple for its timeless versatility, warmer wood tones and natural finishes are gaining popularity.

“Clients love wood’s organic warmth and character, creating a cozy yet sustainable aesthetic. Neutral shades remain a versatile foundation, seamlessly adapting to evolving design trends.”

Key cabinet trends blend clean lines with classic moldings, mixed materials, bold hardware, and functional innovations like soft-close mechanisms for a stylish, efficient design.

WHY BUY IN PARK CITY?

Park City is the ideal second-home retreat for Arizona residents, combining luxury, charm, and year-round adventure. Just a short flight away, it offers mild summers for hiking and golfing and world-class skiing in winter.

Beyond lifestyle appeal, Park City’s real estate market remains one of the most stable luxury markets in the country. Limited inventory in exclusive neighborhoods like Deer Valley, The Colony, and Promontory Club continues to drive appreciation.

“Park City’s high demand ensures strong returns,” says Lindsay Wing of Engel & Völkers. “Year-round appeal and Salt Lake City proximity make it a stable investment.”

For those looking to generate income, Park City’s short-term rental market is one of the strongest in the country, with ski season and events like the Sundance Film Festival driving premium rates.

“Many of my clients use their Park City home as an income-generating asset when they’re not there, taking advantage of peak rental seasons,” Wing explains.

Utah’s business-friendly tax climate adds financial appeal, with a flat income tax rate of 4.85% and potential property tax deductions, depreciation, and 1031 exchanges.

Smart storage maximizes space—wall systems free floors, and custom solutions optimize every inch. Our designs ensure efficient workflow with workbenches and shelving.

INVESTING IN KAUAʻI REAL ESTATE

Kauaʻi is one of the most desirable and exclusive real estate markets in Hawai‘i. Property holds its value, ensuring long-term appreciation. Strict zoning regulations limit future development, making Kukuiʻula’s available homesites immensely valuable.

Kauaʻi’s luxury rental market also remains strong, with over 1.3 million visitors annually. Owners who choose to rent their properties when not in residence can take advantage of a high-demand market, providing a return on their investment while maintaining a home in paradise.

Vino con Stelle

An Evening of Elegance and Impact

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB AND DAWN DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY

For Joey Fatone, cancer research isn’t just a cause—it’s personal.

“My mother is a survivor of breast cancer,” says Joey.

Joey, a beloved entertainer and philanthropist, is passionate about honoring his mother’s journey as a breast cancer survivor.

“She got it detected early, went through chemo, and everything is alright, but many aren’t so fortunate. What I love about this event is 100% of the money that’s donated goes directly to research.”

Performers Michael Bublé, Chris Kirkpatrick, Rachel Platten, Katharine McPhee, David Foster, and Joey Fatone

That unwavering commitment to funding breakthrough treatments is what makes Vino con Stelle a highly anticipated event.

One of Gateway Cancer Research’s most intimate and one of its signature fundraiser is happening on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025, where the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess will welcome guests to a luxurious black-tie gala, where fine wines, world-renowned entertainment, and a shared purpose come together to support a singular mission: finding, funding, and furthering early-phase cancer clinical trials.

“To hear directly from those whose lives we’ve changed with this organization is one of the great honors of my life,” says Mr. Richard J Stephenson, Founder and Chairman of Gateway for Cancer Research.

Hosted by Dr. Stacie J. and Mr. Richard J Stephenson, Gateway’s Vice Chairman and Chairman respectively, this immersive, experiential evening is more than just an elegant affair—it’s a lifeline for patients whose hope depends on innovation.

“It’s because of the bravery of Gateway’s patients and researchers, and the generosity of our donors, that we continue this lifesaving work that is ALWAYS and ONLY about the patient,” says Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson.

For 30 years, Gateway for Cancer Research has been at the forefront of advancing innovative cancer treatments, ensuring that 100% of every donation goes directly to research. This commitment, made possible through the Stephenson family’s generosity, has propelled life-changing breakthroughs, giving patients new hope.

“The Stephensons are super philanthropic. Amazing people who have done so much great work in the world,” says David Foster,  Grammy Award winner and Gateway for Cancer Research Musical Director.

In 2024, Gateway funded $8.3 million in cancer research, accelerating the development of new treatments. But there’s still work ahead.

Through generosity and innovation, Vino con Stelle is a night to celebrate progress, honor resilience, and invest in the future of cancer research.

Miss Paradise Valley’s Mission to Comfort Kids in Need

to Service

Mimi Hymel’s life has been shaped by resilience and purpose. At just three years old, her family evacuated New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

“We lost our home, our belongings—everything,” she recalls.

Despite being young, the experience left a lasting mark.

“I don’t remember everything, but I do remember losing my teddy bear, Cuddles. I wished I had grabbed it.”

That impact became Comfort Bears in a Catastrophe, the nonprofit Mimi founded to provide stuffed animals and handwritten notes to children affected by disasters—offering the same comfort she once longed for.

“Essentials matter, but kids also need emotional comfort.”

What began as a personal mission has grown into a nationwide movement, with beauty queens across the country hosting their own Comfort Bears donation drives. The recent California fires further fueled collection efforts, rallying strong community support.

After several moves, Mimi’s family eventually settled in Arizona. And at age 13, a dance teacher encouraged her to enter a pageant—a moment that redefined her path.

“I gave it a shot and fell in love with it.”

Competing in Miss America-affiliated pageants opened doors to scholarships, community service, and personal growth.

“The gowns are fun, but I love making a real impact.”

“I WAS SECOND RUNNER-UP LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR, I’M GOING FOR THE CROWN. FOR THE MISS ARIZONA TALENT COMPETITION, I’LL SING  OVER THE RAINBOW  IN HALF ENGLISH, HALF ITALIAN. IT TIES INTO MY STORY— FINDING HOPE AFTER A STORM.” -MIMI HYMEL, MISS PARADISE VALLEY

“Partnering with Paradise Valley City Lifestyle and the Square One Concepts’ Cold Beers Cares initiative made this drive so impactful,” says Mimi. “Thanks to our incredible community, we collected countless stuffed animals for children affected by the California fires. Drop-off locations at Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers and Famous 48 made it possible, and I was honored to personally deliver thousands of donations.”

Now, as Miss Paradise Valley, Mimi is competing for Miss Arizona, with her sights set on Miss America.

“I was second runner-up last year. This year, I’m going for the crown.”

The journey requires intense preparation—gown selection (“blue is my power color”), fitness, and talent.

“I sing Over the Rainbow in half English, half Italian. It ties into my story—finding hope after a storm.”

Beyond pageantry, Mimi is earning an MBA on a full-ride scholarship and hopes to build a career in disaster relief.

“Whether through my nonprofit or the Red Cross, I want to make a difference.”

The Man Behind COURSE

21 QUESTIONS WITH CHEF CORY OPPOLD: A JAMES BEARD NOMINEE

Chef Cory Oppold recently achieved a career-defining milestone—his long-awaited nomination by the prestigious James Beard Foundation. This honor recognizes years of dedication, innovation, and the sacrifices made to bring his culinary vision to life.

At the heart of his journey is COURSE, a dining experience that redefines fine dining through immersive, 10-course tasting menus. Named Top Chef and Emerging Restaurant of the Year by the Foodist Awards, Chef Oppold pushes the boundaries of flavor and presentation, crafting dishes like a caviar-adorned doughnut and a reimagined “Fish & Chips” featuring sturgeon, potato, and smoked brook trout roe.

In true  Paradise Valley City Lifestyle fashion, we played a fun game of 21 questions with Chef Oppold to dive deeper into his culinary journey and inspirations.

1. Growing up on a dairy farm, what is your fondest memory of food from your childhood? My parents and grandparents always having a garden. I enjoyed picking vegetables and weeding in the garden, and also the canning and preserving of the vegetables.

2. How did the farm life shape your work ethic in the kitchen today? Growing up on a farm was hard work; it was always constant and never ending. Any other job from there is pretty easy.

3. What inspired your initial interest in art and math, and do those skills influence your cooking? I don’t know what inspired it, but I often excelled in math and art. The art aspect is a huge inspiration in food as I view food as an art-form.

4. What was it about your first fine dining experience that made you change your career path? I saw food as art and entertainment as opposed to just nourishment.

5. How did teaching at Le Cordon Bleu College influence your culinary style? Teaching culinary school gave me the time to reflect on and define my style of cooking. To teach, you have to research.

6. What’s one lesson you learned early in your career that you still live by? Work hard and stay on your path.

7. How do you define “fine dining” in today’s food landscape? Fine dining today is beautiful and delicious food with a style of service that exceeds expectations.

8. If you could go back to when you first started cooking, what advice would you give your younger self? Travel more to learn other styles of food and different techniques.

9. If you could cook for anyone, who would it be and why? Will Ferrell.  No explanation needed.

10. What’s your all-time favorite ingredient to work with and why? Salt. Without salt, there really is no flavor.

11. Are there any trends in cooking you wish would go away? No, everything has a purpose at some point or time.

12. What’s an underrated ingredient or dish you think deserves more attention? Sh*t on a shingle, which is creamed chipped beef on toast served in the army.

13. What’s a dish you’ve made that you’re most proud of? Lobster corndog.

“I see food as art and entertainment as opposed to just nourishment.”
“Our tasting menu changes seasonally, but I would say the lobster corndog is among many favorites. The dish was inspired by the state fair.”

14. If you weren’t a chef, what career path do you think you’d be pursuing today? I would be an architect.

15. Do you have a guilty pleasure food you love but would never put on a menu? Not in particular. There are always spins and plays we could do to incorporate it in our menu.

16. What’s the story behind the creation of COURSE in Scottsdale? COURSE has always been a dream of mine. I’ve always wanted a multi-course establishment, hence the name. But COURSE also refers to the direction in which we want to take the food.

17. What’s the most popular dish at COURSE, and what inspired it? Our tasting menu changes seasonally, but I would say the lobster corndog is among many favorites. The dish was inspired by the state fair.
