elcome November! It is that time of year when we start the holiday season and plan for our big feast on Thanksgiving Day! As we celebrate the traditional turkey day, many of us take time to give thanks and reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. This is also the time of year when our food banks’ shelves are at their lowest, and the need is at its highest. To help support our community, Parker Lifestyle and our business partners are holding a food drive throughout the month of November. We invite you to help. Please stop by the area businesses listed below and drop off a non-perishable food item, dog food or donate your spare change. During a tour of Brookside Inn, Sonam blessed, and then explained meanings and pronunciations of Tibetan calligraphy to the guests, residents and staff. As Sonam gave his parting wishes, one resident said, “thank you for making Brookside Inn such a unique place.” If you would like to see Wangdu’s original works, please call Brookside Inn at 303.688.2500 for a tour.

Unlocking Students’ Talents GRIT AND COMPASSION LEAD THE WAY FOR AWARD-WINNING TEACHER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN CORMIER

M

ath teacher Cari Corley wants her Legend High School students to be able to do more than decipher angles or solve an algebra equation. Her goal is to give them the skills to tackle any challenge in life. “That’s what I’m passionate about: helping students create their own success,” she says. Corley, who has been teaching for about 15 years, had her own self-discovery about seven years ago, when she felt she wasn’t giving students at Aurora’s Hinkley High School what they needed. “I realized the teacher I am isn’t the teacher that the students need me to be,” she says. “That’s not okay.” With the help of her students, she “recrafted” herself. She also started down a path of learning about “grit,” which “is essentially a combination of passion and perseverance” that requires a growth mindset. “If I can get students engaged in their own growth process, then it doesn’t really matter what challenges we face. And math has plenty,” she says. Cari Corley works with “If we can help them know what kind of geometry students learners they are, and they’re (from bottom right): Taylor Garcia and willing and passionate Maria Putman. Aspen about growing, that Davy awaits her group's will lead to high instruction at the next table. achievement. And that’s what is really important – even more than the math. “Math is the medium,” she continues. “Math gives us the opportunity 12

to run into things we don’t know how to do.” Also contributing to her teaching style was the development of a business plan for Alta Vida Alpacas, a company run by her 21-year-old, developmentally-disabled son, Peter, and the family’s nonprofit, Alpaca Partners. “Our goal is to help special needs individuals first find community and get safe and then find areas of passion, and help them turn that into a business or a revenue stream, develop competence.” In developing that plan, she says they needed to come up with core values. “The three words that we came up with were compassion, community and competence. As I’ve taken those core values and put them into the classroom, they’ve changed my policies, how I relate, what I expect, all of it.” The end result is a teacher who absolutely loves what she does, especially when working with her students at Legend, some of who have been identified as “challenged learners.” “My favorite type of student, whether it be a learning obstacle or whatever it is, are the kiddoes that have a lot of talent … but we’ve just not found the keys that unlock those talents,” she says. While she enjoys watching her students when they realize they will succeed in a specific endeavor, she is modest about her own success. After being named the Secondary Educator of the Year during the 2015 Apple Awards, she went out and bought hundreds of apples, so that she could give one to every person who works at Legend, even the custodians. “It was a little humbling, sitting in a staff meeting with all these incredible teachers, and I’m the one that got this award,” she says. “One of my favorite moments was all of a sudden realizing I had the opportunity not to win an award, but to represent what we do here. “We all care about kids. We all work our tails off. We’re here to build relationships and to be a family.”

hile Parker’s wonderful community spirit shines through all year long, it is especially prevalent this time of year with an incredible variety of holiday activities, some of which benefit local organizations or groups. An assortment of upcoming events are listed in this month’s Lifestyle Calendar, but here are two that are sure to give Parker area residents a jump start on their shopping and keep them in the holiday spirit.

For those looking to get an early start on their gift-giving purchases, the Mountain Pine Yuletide Bazaar is an absolute must. Hosted annually by the Mountain Pine Woman’s Club, the bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Parker Fieldhouse, 18700 Plaza Drive. This year’s bazaar is expected to be extraordinary as new vendors join some of the old favorites and the club’s own Mountain Pine Craft Booth. With more than 100 vendors, there will be endless gift-giving ideas to satisfy everyone on gift lists and perhaps, just perhaps, a goodie or two for the shopper too. But that’s not all. Baked goods will be available to take home and share, or be enjoyed by shoppers at the bazaar’s café. The Mountain Pine Yuletide Bazaar is the major fundraiser for the Parker Mountain Pine Woman’s Club, with proceeds going to the Parker community, Douglas County and the Denver metro area. Funds raised go toward scholarships for Douglas County seniors, Freedom Service Dogs, Sky Cliff Adult Daycare, Heifer International, Fisher House, Native American Heritage Association, Arising Hope, Operation Smile, Santa’s Workshop, Praying Hands Ranch and other projCONTINUED > ects as the need becomes known.

At

Parker Lifestyle, we thought it would be interesting to look at how far your home-buying dollar would go in the Parker area. We asked several real estate agents to provide us with information and photos of listings and recent sales in the Parker area, so you could see just what you would get for $375,000 to $1.95 million. Before we look at individual homes and their prices, we asked Timothy Clark, managing broker of the Castle Pines and Greenwood Village offices of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, to comment on the real estate market in the Denver metro area and Parker in particular. According to Clark, Metro Denver has been one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. In Parker, he says, average prices have increased 7 percent when comparing the first three quarters of 2015 to the same time period in 2014. For that time period, the average price has increased from $372,672 in 2014 to $397,337 this year. His stats also show that the average days a Parker home is on the market has dropped from 42 days in 2014 to 29 in 2015, with 1,791 properties sold through the third quarter of 2014 and 1,891 for that same time period in 2015. Currently, 2,492 properties are for sale at an average list price of $452,451. The future bodes well for the Douglas County area, Clark says, noting that the Douglas County Master Plan calls for tremendous growth in housing opportunities, as well as business development, parks and trails. “With good planning and controlled growth, Parker should see a favorable real estate market for a long time.” Here’s what your money can buy: 18

12 Tips for a Healthier Holiday Season

YOU CAN START THE NEW YEAR ON A LIGHTER NOTE ARTICLE CORIE GOODSON

T

he holidays can be a time of overindulgence and weight gain for many of us. Family gatherings and holiday parties with friends are part of what make the season so special. Sweet concoctions, baked goods and traditional recipes abound, and it's hard not to want to take part in all that the season has to offer. Even the most disciplined eaters can fall prey to the seductive abundance with the idea that January first will be the start of a new and healthier lifestyle. After all, isn't that what new year's resolutions are all about? The average person gains 5 to 10 pounds between Halloween and Christmas. That translates to anywhere from 17,500 to 35,000 extra calories that have to get burned to get back to a pre-holiday weight. One would have to run 175 to 350 miles to lose those extra helpings of stuffing and dessert. What if you could go into the new year without making that resolution to lose those holiday pounds? Here are a few tips to help you reach that goal. • Never go to a holiday event on an empty stomach. Have a light snack an hour before you leave so that you aren't famished when you get there. • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Believe it or not, it can help cut cravings and help minimize overeating. • Eat a healthy breakfast every day. This boosts metabolism and helps to curb overeating later. • Avoid the punch and eggnog. They come loaded with sugar and fat. Spend the extra calories on the food instead as liquid calories can rack up much faster. • Before indulging in the more calorie dense foods, hit the veggie tray or start with a green salad. These items take a bit longer to eat and can take the edge off before reaching for the goodies.

24

Parker Lifestyle | November 2015

• If asked to bring a side dish, volunteer to bring a salad or veggie tray. That way, you are guaranteed to have that as a choice. • Go easy on the holiday spirits. Not only does alcohol contribute to empty calories, it causes blood sugar to drop, causing you to crave high-calorie foods and weakening your resolve to watch what you eat. It can even temporarily slow down metabolism. • If you do partake in some holiday cheer, alternate with a glass of water to help you keep hydrated and monitor your intake. • Don't avoid holiday foods. Take a small helping equivalent to a couple of bites of each item. This way, you don't feel deprived and you get to taste everything. • Don't forget to exercise. An hour of moderate exercise four to five times a week will help burn extra calories. Adding a brisk 30-minute walk after a heavier meal will also boost digestion and metabolism, and help negate the effects of eating more. • Try not to let the holidays stress you out. Stress can lead to overeating and eating the wrong foods. What is less known is the effect of stress on fat burning. Cortisol, the stress hormone, will actually block your body from burning fat. • Lastly, try to make the holidays more about family and friends rather than food. Believe me, when all is said and done, you will go into the new year healthier and happier, and there are a lot more productive resolutions to make on New Year's Eve. Or, better yet, skip the resolutions and instead set positive goals for the year ahead.

Math and Discipline Create Results for Local Businesses DOBIZLO BRINGS BIG BUSINESS TOOLS TO SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESSES ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN CORMIER

U

sing math, discipline and the concepts of planning ahead and buying locally, a relatively new company has found a way to bring big business marketing tools to small- and medium-sized businesses. DoBizLo and its staff have a vast amount of resources and ideas that most small- to medium-sized business could never afford on their own, says Jonathan James, CEO of Animal Care Center of Castle Pines and a DoBizLo client for four months. “They’ve found a way to aggregate that,” he says. “When you look at what they can do, they bring all their resources but make them accessible to the small business. That really is what makes them so incredibly unique.” For James and Scott McQueen of Pinetree Jewelers in Parker, the company has been critical in improving their respective business’ online presence. “They drive a lot of people to your website,” says McQueen. “They give you a lot of services and a lot of things that usually only big companies have for a reasonable price. “ But it’s not just one thing; it’s the variety of services and the knowledge of the staff that add up to improve business results, McQueen says. The company was launched in Parker in January 2013 by Founder Joe Oltmann and Chief Technology Officer Chris Wiegand. It now includes President Troy Daniels and about 40 employees who serve about 600 businesses in 16 Colorado communities with plans for expansion in New Mexico, Utah and Arizona in 2016. “The strategy of buying hyperlocal was Joe’s strategy, and it’s brilliant,” Daniels says. “It all starts with a good idea." And is then implemented through discipline. Oltmann agreed, saying businesses must agree to stick to the system, which is based on mathematical probabilities of engagement rather than marketing technique. “This is a discipline. It’s not just you can come to us, give us some money and we can make your business grow,” Oltmann says. “You 26

Parker Lifestyle | November 2015

have to build what we do into the day-to-day operations of planning ahead for your business. “Small to medium businesses don’t know how to plan ahead. They plan today for what they are going to do tomorrow. What we teach businesses to do is … plan in October what we’re going to do in November. We build a strategy and then on the first of the month, we launch that strategy.” Admitting he is not a “marketing guy,” Oltmann says he came up with the idea for DoBizLo after seeing too many small- to medium-sized businesses swallowed up by the big business environment. “Let’s just use Ace Hardware as an example,” Oltmann says. “Ace Hardware stores are in a community, typically owned by someone locally. And Home Depot comes in and puts a big huge box down and spends $1 million to advertise themselves and then all of a sudden the entire community gets amnesia and forgets about that business that has serviced their community for so long.” Add to that the concept of local. “We know that 87 cents on every dollar is spent within three to five miles of a person’s home, so why is it that companies are being asked to advertise 30 miles away?” Oltmann asks. “And they’re spending all this money that is really not going to bring people to their front door.” Then bring in all the different channels. DoBizLo provides local consumers with deals and offers “when and where” the customers want to receive them, whether it’s through email, text messaging, social media or search engine optimization. “We’ve built something that’s incredibly special for small- to medium-sized business,” Oltmann says. eneath the burgeoning supermoon, Amy Smith and Michael Cotsworth exchanged vows in a Renaissance-style wedding celebration, surrounded by nearly 100 guests, including Parker Town Council members, journalists and former mayors from across Colorado, many also dressed in the evening’s theme. Amy’s matron of honor, Beth Telford, is the 9-year reigning queen of the annual Renaissance Festival in Larkspur. Beth’s husband, Bruce Telford, was one of two officiants who performed the traditional Celtic ceremony, alongside the groom’s sister, Christy Richards. Amy’s daughter and Michael’s two daughters were also in the wedding party. Michael and Amy met in 2012 through their involvement in the Parker Area Chamber of Commerce. Both are avid auto enthusiasts, and Amy writes the Driver’s Notebook feature for Parker Lifestyle as Automotive Amy: Lady in the Fast Lane. Michael’s telling of their path together is one of Amy’s favorite stories. While meeting about a Parker Chamber program, he saw in Amy something he found singularly intriguing: an enthusiastic, fiery redhead with wit and charm. The couple first truly connected at Nomelie Cupcakes during the Parker Wine Walk on Sept. 26, 2012. (Note the date!) In the words of the bride, they “went on from there together.” The couple is now happily living in Parker as husband and wife, as well as partners in business, parents and grandparents. They are active members of the Douglas County community, involved together with many local endeavors and organizations, and both are extremely excited to share the years ahead.

Parting Thoughts

Seeing Ourselves Through Teachers’ Eyes WORDS SUSAN CORMIER

T

hanksgiving is a time of reflection, reminding me of everything that is near and dear. A recent interview with Legend High School’s Cari Corley has given me some new thoughts as we head into the season of gratitude. And that is a big “thank you” to the teachers who saw something in me that I did not see myself. I had many wonderful teachers during my school years. A fourth grade nun, a seventh-grade science teacher. My parents – an elementary school librarian, who always encouraged reading, and a college journalism professor - also come to mind. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now if my Dad hadn’t convinced me to take the beginning writing course offered by the University of Arizona Journalism Department. But I especially remember one comment from a middle school teacher. On a written story that she had graded, she wrote “You will surely be a writer one day.” When I read the note, I was surprised. I thought, “This teacher doesn’t know me at all. I will never be a writer.” Boy, was I wrong. I guess this teacher spotted a skill that I didn’t even know existed. In my interview for the Terrific Teacher feature in this month’s issue of Parker Lifestyle, Corley shared the rewarding feelings she gets when students realize they can do what Corley already sees in them as possible. She recalled a sophomore who refused to do anything. She wouldn’t bring paper to class. She wouldn’t come prepared. She was just waiting to be “old enough to get a job.” Corley wasn’t discouraged.

The math teacher told the girl that she would graduate and that she would help her. She told her that this wasn’t an argument and she didn’t have to agree. “This is just me, looking at you, and I see you walking across the stage,” she quotes herself as saying to the student. The next day, the girl brought a coloring book and colored, which Corley says was awesome. Then, over the course of the year, Corley continued to provide support and encouragement, putting notes on her desk that said things like, “I believe in you.” The support, encouragement and vision for what this student could be made a difference. As Corley explains: “She came up to me first day of her junior year and she asked, ‘Are you going to be here in two years?’ “I said, ‘I think so.’ “She said, ‘You have to promise me you’ll be here in two years’. “I said, ‘All right. I will stay here for sure for two years. Why’?” The student replied, “Because I’m going to graduate with a twoyear college degree and my high school degree.” Sure enough. That’s what she did. She received two diplomas at her high school graduation. As Corley put it: “She just needed someone to see something.” So this Thanksgiving, I am giving special thanks to those teachers who “see something” in their students, just like my middle school teacher who predicted that I would become a writer. Without them, many students wouldn’t become the productive and successful adults they are today.
