When fall arrives here on the Gulf Coast, it’s not so much the turning of the leaves that people notice. It’s that first puff of cool, dry air.

During the depths of summer, those sweltering days when it was 80 at sunrise, I grew increasingly fearful of the heat and humidity. Is it age, or am I reverting to my English roots? If I wasn’t on the water, I stayed inside between noon and 3 — afraid of spontaneous combustion. But then summer ends. Droves of summer visitors go home and leave the beautiful coast to us locals. The water is still warm. It’s Pensacola’s hidden summer. Festival season. The arts. You’ll read plenty about it in this issue. We have more festivals here than you can shake food on a stick at…

It’s time to dust off the patio furniture, enjoy a cool drink in the warm afternoon sun — or watch the steam rise from my coffee in the morning breeze. The only thing about October? Lovebugs and black flies. Our weather turns into a West Coast style of gorgeous. Then we see the swarms of writhing lovebugs lacing our roadways, and ankle-biting flies that are driven to our beaches by the cool northern gusts. Break out the bug remover and the bug repellant. Enjoy the sweet scenes of fall. Drop us a line. Or better yet, send a selfie of you and yours enjoying this wonderful secret summer. Happy fall, folks.

ne local group of women is committed to helping girls become their best selves. The PACE Center for Girls Escambia/Santa Rosa - a non-profit, year-round alternative education and counseling program – equips and empowers at-risk girls, ages 11-18, for a better future. “PACE” stands for Practical, Academic, Cultural Education. PACE’s philosophy: Every female deserves the opportunity to find her voice, achieve her potential, and celebrate her life. “We understand that girls need something different than boys,” said Meghan Baisden, special projects manager. PACE students share a common history of victimization caused by sexual and/or physical abuse, poverty, bullying, and family instability, she said. “Our goal is to provide a safe, gender-responsive environment to boost them up.” And boost them, they do. More than 2,500 girls have attended the program since 1994. They follow the public school curriculum, adding individual counseling, training, and advocacy. In the last enrollment year alone:

14

Pensacola Lifestyle | October 2016

• 93 percent of students improved academically and 84 percent achieved improvements in math and reading (68 percent were failing one or more classes at the time of enrollment) • 82 percent attended school regularly (31 percent had previously dropped out of school) • 89 percent remained crime-free (32 percent had been in the Juvenile Justice System) • 100 percent participated in community volunteering and service learning There is no cost to the girls or their families to attend PACE Center. Therefore, the program depends on funding from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, local school boards, and community support. PACE’s approach to fundraising is as innovative as its program. The 9th Annual Bag It Luncheon, set for Oct. 20 in Gulf Breeze, combines philanthropy with designer handbags. Attendees can bid on new, vintage and gently “loved” bags from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Kate Spade, and other designers. More than 150

RUNS, RIDES AND A

OHMY! TRI,

FALL KICKS OFF ACTIVE SEASON

SEAN SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN SMITH

T

he race season is upon us. Many runners have been hitting the roads year-round, running at lunch in sweltering July heat. Not me. For me, and for other runners who were tethered to treadmills, we now have emerged from heat-resistant shelters. Outside, we find, among other things, fall air that actually contains oxygen — instead of soupy summer water vapor. October is here. It’s safe outside. Run! Running is not just a resolution or a means to fitness. It’s a way of life. For some, it’s a solitary escape or a chance to download, a time to decompress. Who says running is solitary? Around these parts you never have to run alone — unless you really, really want to go solo. For many of us, it’s a social connection — a chance to unwind with friends; we get better together. It’s not how fast you run. It’s the journey, from the training sessions and running groups to the long final course. There are so many reasons to run and ways to train. Running Wild and the Pensacola Runners Association hold free running

groups and clinics. World of Beer sponsors a Tap it and Run club on Wednesdays. The Cap’n Fun Runners launch from Pensacola Beach. As professional Triathlon coach Helen Cain of tripossibilities.com, said in last month’s article on Triathlon training: “Enlist partners. We are social beasts. We thrive on companionship, and we care about others. Find friends who might like to join your crazy adventure,” she said. “Or, if you prefer to go it alone, at least find friends who will support you and hold you accountable.” The fall, winter and spring run season is here, with not just runs, but rides, duathlons and triathlons. Oh, my! Luckily, we listed some here. If you’re still inside, come one out! You won’t burst into flames.

s e e p r u B d n a ... e v Lo , e f Li Fixed on Fitness Thrives and Grows

The burpee seems pretty basic. Try it at home! • Start in a standing position. • Drop into a squat with your hands on the ground. • Kick your feet back into a plank position, keeping your arms extended as if starting a pushup. • Snap to your feet to the squat position. • Jump up from the squat position • (You did it in one smooth motion, right?) See? Easy. Now repeat that, say, 20 times. Catch your breath. It’s time a for a bear crawl — a hand-and-foot dash across 80 yards or so of grassy terrain. Or maybe a set of ski abs, or froggers. Throw in a few dozen yards of lunges. There. Only 30 minutes left in today’s workout!

And tomorrow, the kettle bells… That’s a day in the life for Fixed on Fitness boot campers in Pensacola, Pace, Cantonment and Perdido Key. Eight years ago, Josh and Kenzie Presnell started their dream to run their own boot camp. A few hardy souls joined them at Bayview Park. Now they serve more than 200 clients, who are running, jumping, burpeeing and kettle-belling their way to a healthy lifestyle. Josh, a former Navy Search and Rescue Instructor Trainer, earned his Health Education at University of West Florida. Josh and Kenzie met in high school. They have been married for 12 years with two children. Both are certified personal trainers. They shared their thoughts on boot camps, of life, and burpees. HOW DO YOU FIND THE BALANCE FOR WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?

We really work as a team with the business and at home. We share the responsibilities of the house, kids, and the business, and we really do work well together. It gets tough sometimes, but we truly love what we 18

do and the people we work with, so we make it work. We definitely work more hours as business owners, but we get to work as a family. The kids have been a part of FOF since they were born, so they enjoy coming out to camp, helping load and unload weights, and saying hi to all of the campers. WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START THE CAMP TOGETHER?

At the time, Pensacola did not have any sort of structured outdoor fitness program. With my experience we decided to bring an outdoor program to Pensacola. We kicked off our first camp in January 2008. WHEN YOU STARTED FOF 8 YEARS AGO DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH IT WOULD GROW?

We really had no idea what to expect when we started this journey. We hoped that it would grow, but I don't think we ever expected it to impact the lives of our clients' in the positive way that it has. We are now running four locations, and we have grown from 20 clients in that first camp to over 200 clients that are with us each month.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A BOOT CAMP WORKOUT OVER THE GYM LIFE?

One of the biggest benefits of FOF is that everyday, our clients have a workout that has been programmed and prepared by a certified personal trainer. Instead of just walking into a gym, our clients walk into an atmosphere where they have formed relationships, where there is camaraderie, and where they know they will be challenged and pushed in a positive and encouraging way. At FOF, our clients have full access to their trainer, and they receive nutrition information, off day workouts, and any other information that they are looking for. WHY THE HECK DO WE KEEP COMING OUT IN COLD AND THE SPONTANEOUS-COMBUSTION SUMMER HEAT?

I guess we are all addicts that like to freeze and sweat. Really, once you have been outside, it is hard to move your workout back indoors no matter what the weather is like. HOW HARD IS IT TO BALANCE THE CAMPS

SPREAD BETWEEN PACE, PENSACOLA, CANTONMENT AND PERDIDO?

Thankfully, we have a really great group of trainers, so it isn't too hard to balance the four locations. Each trainer is responsible for the location that they run, so we are able to give personal attention to all four locations. The camps are all different because each trainer is different, but they all have the same feeling of community. It has been amazing to watch the relationships develop between the campers and the accountability that each camp provides. BEYOND THE WORKOUTS, TELL ME HOW YOUR RECIPES MAKE FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?

We strongly believe that good nutrition is vital to success in any fitness program. No matter how hard you work, you cannot out-train a bad diet. We encourage our clients to eat real food and cut out all processed junk. We have meal plans in place for our clients if they want to utilize them, and our clients also post recipes and resources through our online groups.

odern cuisine with an iconic view. If you still haven’t tried Casino Beach Bar and Grille, fall time is the right time. After the summer tourists return home, Pensacola Beach locals enjoy a more relaxed pace and a cooler breeze, perfect for gulf-side dining. From brunch to lunch to dinner to drinks, CBB delivers on quality, flavor and variety.

Pensacola Lifestyle | October 2016

“Everything that can be fresh, will be fresh,” said Jennifer Rhea, front house manager, “And it seems like we attract the best people here.” The people are attracted to both the menu and the service. CBB offers its patrons a Local’s Loyalty program with members-only daily drink specials, a twice-aday happy hour, and $10 towards their tab for every $100 spent. With choices like the award-winning Bushwacker and pan-seared red snapper, it’s easy to be a loyal local.

Breakfast favorites include the Dawn Patrol BLT with pepper jack and avocado, the Island Mojo Chicken with eggs, and the Crab Cake Benedict. Kids love the banana pancakes, and for the grown-ups: A Creole Island Bloody Mary, served with a skewer of shrimp. For lunch, try the Cuban Mix sandwich with house-roasted pulled pork, a fresh caprese flat bread, or a bowl of gumbo topped with a fried oyster.

For dinner, CBB really shines on its Small Plate selection, including: • Seared scallops served on plantain chips and guacamole, topped with a mango salsa • Ahi tuna lettuce wraps served with carrots, cucumbers, green onions, cilantro, mint, crushed roasted peanuts and sweet chili soy dipping sauce • Boudin croquettes served on mirliton slaw with curry ketchup (“mirliton” is the French Creole word for chayote squash) • Shrimp and green mango ceviche, marinated in fresh lime juice, mint, basil, cilantro, jalapeno and red onion, served with crispy wonton chips Along with its stellar menu, CBB also contributes the beach community. Coming in October: A kids’ Halloween carnival on the Pensacola Beach Pier, including carnival games, candy, vendor booths, and prizes. After the kids leave, adults are invited to the Haunted Carnival, featuring freak shows, fortune tellers, and fire-breathers. “We love our community,” Rhea said. “We’re lining up family fun and live entertainment CONTINUED > right into the fall season.”

he American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be held Oct. 29 at Cordova Mall. The massive community effort, a 3-mile walk and celebration, unites the community with a shared determination to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. Registration for this noncompetitive, inspirational event begins at 7 a.m. and the walk is set to start at 8 a.m. Dollars raised by Making Strides supporters help the American Cancer Society ensure no one faces breast cancer alone by funding innovative breast cancer research; promoting education and risk reduction; and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. Since 1993, more than 12 million supporters have raised more than $750 million nationwide. Last year, 20,000 walkers in Pensacola helped to raise more than $420,000. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the United States

tep outside. Take a deep breath. Can you feel it? The temperature has dropped below 93 degrees these days, and there's a definite air of something vaguely autumnal. For other parts of the country, fall means changing leaves, crisp mornings and cozy cardigans. For the average Pensacolian, it's a half-step closer to college sweatshirt weather, and a joyous leap into festival season. Gas up the car and grab the kids — it's fall, y'all! The Gulf Coast abounds with festivals and fetes for the next few weeks, and fans are ready. For there is something outdoorsy — and delicious — for everyone. Whitney Vaughn Fike will be swinging by the annual Pensacola Seafood Festival taking place Sept. 30 through Oct. 3 in downtown Pensacola. "It's my favorite," she said. "They showcase local restaurants with tapas portions in their Gulf-to-Table area and always have musicians and bands throughout the weekend that cater to many genres." And while there will be plenty of treats to try, the Pensacola resident has one already in mind. "The Grouper Margarita," Whitney revealed. "From Nancy's Haute Affairs." For other fall festival fanatics, it's more of a family affair. This year, Tim and Sandy Bishop are looking forward to introducing two new Bishops to the outdoor food-and-fun experience. With their recently adopted son and daughter, Beckett and Bijou, in tow, the proud parents can't wait to kick off favorite events such as the Jay Peanut Festival and the St. Rose of Lima International Fall Festival in Milton. And maybe a corn maze, or two. "I want the kids to have a sense of excitement about going to eat some boiled peanuts, trying a pieroge for the first time, or walking through the sunflowers to get to the corn," Sandy said. "My mom took us to these events and I want to pass the tradition on to my kids. Life moves too fast to not stop and have a good time."

Hometown Girl, Big-Time Success KATY MIXON: THE ONLY STAR I'VE EVER BABY-SAT

or a few years, the texts came like clockwork. "Your girl Katy is on," they would begin. Then, a barrage of winking or kissy lipped emojis, usually until I broke down and fired off a caps locked "EW. STOP." The "girl" was actor and Pensacola native Katy Mixon, then in her role of the dim but lovable sister on TV's "Mike & Molly." The texter was my friend T, a huge fan of Mixon's, let's say... sparkling personality. Yes. Her personality. I'm sure Katy's eye-catching figure and saucy smirk played no part in his interest. *winking smiley face kiss kiss* I've been a writer for a long time, including several years as a journalist, so I'm no stranger to strangely familiar faces. Throughout my career, I've interviewed more than my share of celebrities -- usually on their way up or down the success ladder, I must admit -- so it's pretty common for me to see someone on TV or in a movie and think, "Hey, I know them." Well, I say "know," but in the sense of 10 to 15 minutes of forced camaraderie and awkward personal questions. That kind of know. But Katy Mixon is a bit different. She is, in fact, the only celebrity I've ever baby-sat. So far, anyway. Katy wasn't a popular actor with impeccable comedic timing when I knew her. She hadn't appeared in films ("The Quiet," "Four Christmases") or hilarious HBO shows (Eastbound & Down). She was simply the little sister of one of my school friends, and, let's be honest, a source of potential teen income.

But she, like the rest of her siblings, was as cute, and as personable, as could be. The entire Mixon family is well-known around Pensacola. Just about every one of them has been in local theatre or musical productions, both on-stage and off. They are a talented-nice-people factory, and they can't be stopped. Nor should they. They're truly lovely. I feel like I've been writing about Katy Mixon for years. And it's with an oddly personal sense of pride, as though those torturous hours of the Benji board game led somehow to her current success. You never know, though. Navigating fame must be a cakewalk after that dog. And now, I and everyone else in her hometown, have a new reason to be just a little more smug. Katy is set to star in "American Housewife," a new comedy series premiering Oct. 11 on ABC. Katy plays the role of Katie Otto, an unapologetic wife and mother of three who raises her "flawed" family in a snooty Connecticut town. The series also stars Diedrich Bader as Jeff Otto, Meg Donnelly as Taylor, Daniel DiMaggio as Harrison, Julia Butters as Anna-Kat, Carly Hughes as Angela and Ali Wong as Doris. As far as I'm concerned, it's another rung on Katy's ever taller ladder, and I wish her the best. And I won't even need to remind myself when the show airs; I'm already expecting those texts. Katy Mixon stars in a new ABC comedy, American Housewife.
