Leap Into Local Love

In this month’s “Love Local” issue, we’ve curated a collection of stories that celebrate the heart of our community. Local artist Stacy Barter’ s vibrant oil on linen piece “Time Flies” graces our February cover, a perfect example of the creative spirit that thrives here in Winter Park. Stacy’s art, as well as her dedication to art education in our community, is a reflection of the deep connections that make our city such a beautiful place to live and love.

Looking to make Valentine’s Day unforgettable? We asked our local partners to share their favorite spots in our Date Night Round Up . Gathering your gal pals for Galentine’s Day or planning your next corporate teambuilding event? Beaux Workshops creates an opportunity to tap into our creativity and build connection in both our work and social circles.

We are proud to shine a spotlight on the heartfelt work of the  The Hope For More Foundation and the Anti-Gala, changing lives right here in Winter Park. The Anti-Gala is a catalyst for transformative change, empowering outstanding nonprofits dedicated to outreach and advocacy. Their inspiring story reminds us of the importance of giving back and supporting causes that bring our community closer together and touch our hearts as much as those we help.

Our team at Winter Park City Magazine is grateful to you for welcoming us into your lives as we continue to celebrate what makes this community so dynamic. We look forward to seeing you at all of our February WPCM events at linktr.ee/winterparkcitymagazine . We hope you take a moment to “Love Local” this February, as the best things in life are often found just around the corner!

Warmest wishes,

February 2025

BEAUX Workshops

Cherrah Johnson, an Orlando-based jewelry designer and UCF alumna with degrees in Advertising and PR, has a vision for Orlando & beyond. She has transformed her passion for jewelry design into a vibrant community-driven experience. With over two decades of expertise, including an early career as a merchandise designer for Disney, Cherrah has established herself as a renowned designer known for her unique, handcrafted pieces. Her jewelry, characterized by a combination of finished and unfinished elements, reflects the inherent duality of human nature.

Inspired by the uncluttered elegance and bohemian charm of Parisian workshops, Beaux Studios offers a creative haven where jewelry enthusiasts can explore their artistic side. Cherrah’s commitment to fostering community has led to the creation of Beaux Workshops, a series of interactive experiences that bring people together to create, learn, and inspire one another.

Where Creativity Meets Community

Beaux Workshops mentors interns for UCF

At Beaux Workshops, participants gather around shared tables, surrounded by a treasure trove of gems and findings. In these intimate settings, they engage in collaborative art projects, guided by Cherrah’s expert instruction. These workshops are more than just a class; they are an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, share stories, and overcome creative challenges together. Beaux Workshops go beyond the jewelry making and bring people together.

Cherrah believes in the power of community and the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences. She openly discusses her own journey as a designer, highlighting the challenges and triumphs she has faced along the way. By sharing her personal stories, Cherrah empowers others to embrace their creativity, work with their limitations, and pursue their passions. As an involved member of the community, Cherrah is passionate about using her studio as a way to bring people together.

At the heart of Beaux Workshops lies the belief, as Cherrah puts it, “We’re meant to be around each other.” These workshops are a testament to that belief, fostering creativity through shared experiences that strengthen bonds and inspire innovation. By bringing people together around a common creative pursuit, Cherrah aims to inspire a sense of belonging and purpose. Participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, share their stories, and connect with like-minded individuals. Her journey as an entrepreneur has been marked by challenges and triumphs. She openly shares her experiences with small business management & ADHD, offering valuable insights and encouragement. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, she empowers others to overcome obstacles and pursue their own creative dreams.

Looking to spark creativity and build camaraderie within your team? Beaux Workshops are also available for corporate events and team building activities.   art@beauxstudios.com  and available in person at Adjectives Markets.

HOPE FOR MORE FOUNDATION

In the heart of our community lies a remarkable organization driven by a mission to make a difference—one act of kindness at a time. The Hope for More Foundation has become a beacon of compassion and generosity in Central Florida, connecting businesses and individuals with the causes that need them most.

Founded on the belief that every small act can create a ripple effect, the Hope for More Foundation provides grants and resources to nonprofits throughout the region. From supporting programs for underserved children to funding initiatives that promote mental health awareness, their impact is as diverse as the community they serve.

What sets Hope for More apart is their fresh and creative approach to events. Rather than hosting traditional galas and fundraisers, they focus on unique experiences that engage the community in unexpected ways. Their annual fashion show combines style and philanthropy, drawing attention to both emerging designers and important causes. The Anti-Gala—true to its name—delivers an untraditional evening where guests can leave their formalwear at home and focus instead on connecting with others to drive change.

And in 2025, the Foundation will host the Enchantment Ball at the new McLaren Dealership, a magical event that invites children to step into the world of giving back. Designed to introduce young ones to philanthropy in a fun and accessible way, the Ball will combine

fairytales, entertainment, and opportunities to learn about helping others. It’s an innovative step in fostering the next generation of compassionate leaders.

Beyond their events, the Foundation excels at helping local businesses give back in meaningful ways. Many small to medium-sized companies want to make a difference, but aren’t sure where to start. Hope for More bridges that gap, offering a platform for companies to align with charitable organizations that share their values. The result? Partnerships that not only benefit nonprofits, but also foster a culture of giving within the business world.

A cornerstone of the Foundation’s success is its commitment to collaboration. By working with a variety of nonprofits, Hope for More ensures that their resources reach those who need them most.

JOIN THE FUN AT THE ANTI-GALA, FEBRUARY 8TH, 2025

Whether it’s funding school supplies for children, supporting food pantries, or helping veterans transition back into civilian life, the Foundation’s reach is broad, yet always focused on making a tangible impact.

One recent example of their work is the collaboration with a local nonprofit providing housing support for struggling families. Through grants and volunteer efforts, Hope for More helped renovate several apartments, turning them into welcoming homes for families in need. The project not only provided

safe, stable housing, but also brought together volunteers from all walks of life, united by a shared sense of purpose.

Through events, workshops, and networking opportunities, the Foundation helps people discover how they can use their time, talents, and treasures to contribute to the greater good.

As we step into a new year, the Hope for More Foundation reminds us that hope isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. By fostering a community of giving and creating innovative ways for people to get involved, they’re showing that together, we can create a brighter future for everyone.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale —also known as Old Town

Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm (including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square, one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor minigolf destination Puttshack .

What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

“WITH FEW RAINY DAYS, IT’S EASY TO PLAN YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES WITHOUT WORRY. YES, THOUGH, THE SUMMER GETS HOT. BUT THE REST OF THE YEAR? PERFECTION.”

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

DINING AND NIGHTLIFE

From mom-and-pop restaurants to those run by James Beard Award-winning chefs and celebrity chefs, Scottsdale has it all. There’s Luna by Giada , by famed chef and TV personality Giada de Laurentiis; Uchi by James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole; FnB by James Beard Award-winning chef Charleen Badman; and The Americano, which is helmed by celebrity chef and TV personality Beau MacMillan. Other local favorites are chef Joey Maggiore’s new The Italiano; Postino, for bruschetta and wine; Ocean 44 for seafood; and Old Town Tortilla Factory—which is set in a historic 75-year-old adobe home—for Southwestern with a Mexican twist.

If you’re looking for a night out, Downtown Scottsdale has the biggest concentration of clubs and bars. The walkable area has Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, El Hefe , Boondocks Patio & Grill , and many others.

If a more upscale lounge is your scene, check out the new Tell Your Friends speakeasy in North Scottsdale, located under The Americano restaurant.

EVENTS

Scottsdale is also known as a destination for events that draw attendees from around the world. Depending on your hobbies, time your visit to coincide with the one that interests you most. Golf lovers (and those who like to party) head to Scottsdale for the popular PGA tournament WM Phoenix Open , dubbed “The Greatest Show on Grass,” also includes concerts with well-known musical acts. Auto enthusiasts flock here for Auto Week , which includes the famous Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction . In late February and through March, the MLB’s Spring Training takes over the Valley, with Scottsdale Stadium becoming the home of the San Francisco Giants. There’s showmanship at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and rivalry on the field at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Classic , which draws players from around the world and features polo matches, a fashion show, parties, and more. And in 2025, Art Week , the next big event in the art world, debuts in Scottsdale.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.

“IF

YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A NIGHT OUT, DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE HAS THE BIGGEST CONCENTRATION OF CLUBS AND BARS.”

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

smart SWEETS

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
