Lifestyle Letter
Hello, friends.
DECEMBER 2015
Y
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from your editor and publisher
ou know how we feel about shopping locally. Our advertisers are local. Our favorite shops and haunts are local. We bring you stories every month about local businesses that make living in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody convenient and fun. So, during December when shopping lists seems to be at the top of our list, we hope you will carefully consider where you shop and what you chose. Our little elves, writer Valerie Shepherd and photographer Nicole Stephens of BL Stephens Photography, are full of holiday spirit this month and bring you a few ideas on page 18.
Do you have plans for the holidays? My husband and I will be burning up the pavement to and from the airport happily collecting our daughters as they come home for the holidays. He will spend time with his true love, his Big Green Egg and the kids and I will reap the bounty. We'll be celebrating the first Christmas since losing both our mothers earlier this year. In honor of my mom, Emily, I will address cards while listening to "Amahl and the Night Visitors." In memory of Mitzi Collins, I will roll out copious amounts of sugar cookie dough and let the family sugar and sprinkle to their hearts content, while sipping a Manhattan. Cheers, beautiful ladies!

he Rosen family of Dunwoody was looking for a way to help local children in need for the holiday season. Through the joy of giving Jill Rosen wanted to teach her own children the value of helping others. Rosen found the Community Assistance Center’s Adopt-a-Family program online and selected a family with two children of similar age to her own. Her family then shopped together to select gifts from the children’s wish lists. The Rosen family, like many others, are repeat donors who come back to CAC each holiday season to give gifts to children. In 2014 donors from Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and beyond adopted 1,185 local children for holiday gifts through CAC. The CAC Adopt-aFamily program connects donors with CONTINUED >

families who have received assistance from CAC in the past year. Recipients are children of working families who are struggling to make ends meet and stay in their homes. In many cases they do not have extra resources for holiday gifts. Adopt-a-Family donors include individuals, families, businesses, civic organizations, clubs and congregations. Donors are asked to provide gifts from the children’s wish lists in amounts of $50 per child. While to some that may not seem like a lot, to the recipients it brings smiles, tears and thanks. Recipients often leave notes of thanks for their anonymous donors. A mother of three left a note for the Sandy Springs Rotary which adopts many children through CAC’s Adopt-a-Family each year. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the presents for my children. You don't know the happiness they will provide." Another family wrote, “My family would like to extend our greatest thanks and appreciation for your Christmas miracle. Thank you so much for bringing Christmas to our family in our time of need.” The 2015 CAC Adopt-a-Family holiday season runs through the middle of this month. giving—giving a gift in honor or tribute of a loved one, friend or colleague—is growing in popularity and offers both the giver and the receiver an added bonus: a better world. Here are just a few local organizations that offer tribute giving opportunities.

ATLANTA RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES
Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc. (ARMHC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing the health and well being of children and families. ARMHC serves and sustains families when serious illness or injury strikes the most cherished part of their lives: their children. At the two Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses, no family is turned away if they cannot afford the $20 per night contribution, and many of these families stay at the Ronald McDonald House for weeks, and sometimes months, while their children receive treatment at local children's hospitals. When you make a tribute gift, ARMHC will send a notification letter to the person being honored, and you can also choose to send a custom e-card. GEORGIA OVARIAN CANCER ALLIANCE
In Sandy Springs, there is a health-focused nonprofit that offers the opportunity for tribute giving. The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) works to increase awareness and educate Georgia’s women, their families, and the healthcare community about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer in hopes of leading to earlier detection and treatment. These donations are used to continue and expand the outreach of the GOCA programs. One of GOCA’s premiere community outreach programs is the GOCA Bag of Hope which is given, free of charge, to newly-diagnosed, Georgia based, ovarian cancer patients. This program responds to needs expressed by women diagnosed with ovarian cancer to have readily available reliable information on cancer resources and support while providing comfort and hope. Recipients receive a Tote Bag, Blanket, Water Bottle, Hat, Journal & Pen, Booties, an informational CD, and a DVD of Survivor Stories. Bag of Hope Sponsorships are available for a $100 donation, which allows the donor to include a personalized card in a Bag of Hope. CIVIL LAWYERS AGAINST WORLD SEX-SLAVERY
Sex slavery exists in Atlanta's most popular suburbs, including Buckhead, Alpharetta and Dunwoody, and the illegal sex trade brings in an estimated $290 million annually, mostly through the kidnapping and coercion of young children and women. To address this epidemic, Civil Lawyers Against World Sex-Slavery (CLAWS) engages in targeted civil litigation against sex traffickers and all facilitators of sexual harm. CLAWS advocates for the appropriate and effective criminal prosecution of perpetrators. It also advocates for public policies that increase the enforcement and efficacy of criminal and civil laws pertaining to sexual violence and exploitation. If you would like to make a donation to CLAWS in honor of a loved one, they can provide you with cards and information to show how your donation helps. Simply make an online donation or send them your contribution, letting them know that you want a card to recognize your special gift. All donations to CLAWS go directly into the organization's work and operating expenses. For more information on how to make a tribute gift to CLAWS, please call 404.382.0353 or email karen@usclaws.org. GEORGIA AQUARIUM
Tribute giving through Georgia Aquarium is a meaningful way to honor a loved one and at the same time, help ensure future generations will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of the world’s oceans in downtown Atlanta. These gifts support the organization’s mission to bring the aquatic world to both students and guests. These experiences can launch a lifetime of learning about the magnificence of our living seas and builds awareness of how conservation of aquatic animals is relevant to everyone. Tribute donors can choose to have their loved ones permanently listed on Georgia Aquarium’s memorial wall. These gifts perpetuate the memory of the individual's life and work and translate into a legacy for future generations. For more information on how to make a tribute gift to Georgia Aquarium, please call 404.581.4134 or e-mail cfleming@georgiaaquarium.org. HIGH MUSEUM OF ART
The High Museum of Art offers many ways to donate, including through gifts to the Annual Fund, gifts of art, or endowment and estate gifts. Tribute giving also offers an opportunity to honor a family member or friend whose life has been impacted by the Museum. Works of art may be donated to the High during a person’s lifetime or by bequest, which is one of the simplest and most popular ways to make a gift of this kind. These gifts can help ensure the quality of the Museum's collections, special exhibitions, education and public programs for generations to come. New Mazda CX-3 Has Drivers Looking Forward to 2016 ARTICLE DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
t has been a great 2015 in the automobile world and luckily for motorists, cars like the 2016 Mazda 2016 CX-3 will maintain the momentum regarding the advancement of technology, power, style, gas mileage and practicality to name a few. Simply put, it’s a win.
MAZDA 2016 CX-3 GRAND TOURING AWD
Following the seemingly countless accolades for what they did with the remodeled Mazda3 and MAZDA6, the carmaker’s award-winning global design team continues to embrace their “KODO—Soul of Motion” philosophy with the jaw-dropping 2016 CX-3. Coupled with the popular SKYACTIV technology which delivers optimal en30

gineering to this subcompact crossover—the increasingly popular auto classification reflecting a smaller SUV—it will be a safe bet MAZDA will need to make more room in their trophy cabinets in 2016. The list of bells and whistles from standard to optional is beyond generous for the CX-3; whether it’s the Sport, Touring or Grand Touring Trim, there will be virtually nothing left to be desired. From the all-wheel drive maneuverability, to the entire suite of SkyActive engineering; signature MAZDA CONNECT seven-inch touchscreen infotainment suite; 146 horses under the hood providing impressive pep; low CO2 emissions; a sport driving mode; i-ACTIVSENSE safety applications boasting blind spot detection
and rear cross traffic alert when backing out; active driving display; dual-toned leather interior; 18-inch aluminum wheels; and BOSE sound system, there are remarkably still more to name. The one thing MAZDA is stingy on is the gas consumption and that’s a good thing. The FWD model is a combined 31 miles per gallon (29 city, 35 highway), while the AWD averages a bank account-friendly 29 miles. Starting at a mere $19,960 (and still abundantly enhanced), the 2016 CX-3 may be primarily geared towards those with an active lifestyle, but anyone who finds value, performance, hi-tech gadgetry and good looks essential will find this car a gem. Base price: $19,960 (Sport) The Grand Touring AWD review model with all options and fees: $29,240 (Starts at $24,990) For more information, visit MazdaUSA.com.
