Lifestyle Letter
Happy New Year, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody!
I Photography Samantha Shal
’m not going to hammer you with New Year’s resolution guilt in this letter, or urge you to forgive and forget. I’m sure you’re getting that at every turn. Personally, I set my goals every summer when I head to the lake and review and reset with my friends while sailing and gazing out into the clear deep water. (Uh oh, I just realized I only have six more months to get my act together!)
This month, we bring you stories of a local entrepreneurs working to make their dreams come true while honing ideas, talents and products for the modern marketplace. Dan Siegler of Sandy Springs left his desk job in the rear view mirror and started a specialty smoked salmon business, quickly building a list of fans. He recently hooked up with Griller's Pride (owned by a friend) and now is purveyor of a delish kosher product. Reaching for dreams seems to come naturally for the talent over at Act3 Productions. This month, meet Liane LeMaster of Dunwoody who is starring in the upcoming production at the locally fueled talent machine. Talent runs in the family of Betsy Pomerantz. When she was growing up in Sandy Springs, she couldn't have imagined she would team up with her long-time friend Laura Graber to building a high-end clothing store for children, Mitylene. Betsy’s mom, Juli Bauman helped inspire them as she ran her successful jewelry store, Tassels.

tlanta is a city known for its entertaining. Guests delight in each other’s company inside beauti-
ful homes, noshing on fine food served as a side to captivating conversation. As a frequent host, I love the ritual of planning a menu. Each detail is studied, each decision purveyed- locally. After all, southerners don’t stray far from home! It’s a labor of love. I enjoy every minute. Or, I enjoy almost every minute of the planning process. The truth is, appetizers have always stumped me. I like my first course to be hearty but not filling, rich yet leaving my guests lingering for the next course. It can’t be time-consuming to prepare. After all, I’ve got a main course to slave over--and I insist the appetizer compliments my first wine pairing (a toasty chardonnay or a crisp rose). I’ve done a cheese board so many times that I find myself yawing. So what’s a gal to do? Indeed, we have a dilemma.

DANCIN’ SALMON (CON TI N U ED)
Enter Dancin’ Salmon, a locally made, generous filet of hot smoked salmon, prepared kosher. I catch word of Dan Siegler, creator, through our editor who had brunch with girlfriends in Dan Siegler
Virginia Highland. The hostess dishes up the salmon just the way Sue and I like it: paired with fresh onion, capers, smidgen of cream cheese alongside a lemon wedge. It’s a captivating course, so Sue cornered the hostess her in the kitchen to vet the source. It’s less than 24 hours later that Dan and I are talking. Siegler, a Sandy Springs resident and Birmingham native, started Dancin’ Salmon in late 2015 after his 22 year IT career ended. Inspired by his family’s entrepreneurial spirit (they once owned Penny Palmer, a ready-to-wear business, his brother is a founder in the clothing line J.McLaughlin and his grandfather was a kosher butcher), Dan decided to pursue a lifelong passion: smoking salmon. “At the end of the day, I’m a face guy. I like to be with people. My wife and I talked night after night about my next career move, and it made sense to do something I love, which was the inspiration for founding the company.” As such, the company is aptly named…Dan (his name) paired with “Cin” from Cindy, his wife and other lifelong passion and you get “Dancin.” The combination is sublime! There’s no shortage of love that is smoked into each generous serving. Dan brings me a 2.5 lb. North Atlantic Salmon filet, pink and juicy, brimming with briny smoked flavor. The whole family digs in--topping moist flaky meat on crackers, while my 8-year old son consumes it straight, by the forkful. At $35.00 per filet (certified kosher), I’m marveling at the value. Our family of five, plus four guests dines happily, with plenty to whet each individual’s appetite. Dan confirms what we’ve just experienced, the fish is top quality, which is no surprise given Buckhead Beef is his supplier. Each salmon filet is certified kosher and sold through Griller’s Pride, a company founded by Dan’s friend Peter, who has been a great supporter of Dan’s new venture. Apparently, my family is not the only fans of Dancin’ Salmon. In less than a few months of operation, news has spread throughout the city regarding Dan’s quality salmon, with many of Dan’s customers hailing from Buckhead and Brookhaven. Gail Spielman, a fellow Buckhead resident, has served Dancin’ Salmon for two gatherings at her home and concurs, “The salmon is always a hit. You can eat it hot or cold. It has such amazing flavor! Everyone who tries it loves it. You can't go wrong! Dancin’ Salmon makes me look good as a host!” I’m not surprised by her enthusiasm as Dan and I chat for a while over the many uses for his salmon. We share ideas. I can see his smoky morsels also topping a fresh arugula salad with pine nuts and red onion, graced with a champagne vinaigrette. The possibilities are endless, but one fact remains--the salmon is divine. I mention this to Dan and he smiles, “I’m glad you love the salmon. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me. Hopefully everyone will enjoy it so much, they will come back for more!” I don’t hope though, I know that Dan has nothing to worry about. In one forkful, you’ll be caught by surprise--hook, line and sinker! For more information visit: GrillersPride.com or email Dan@DancinSalmon.com

ucked behind the Trader Joe’s in Sandy Springs Plaza, down a small unassuming alleyway is the award-winning, Act3 Productions community theatre. Like all great local finds, the exterior of this black-box theatre doesn’t do justice to the consistently soldout shows performed inside on its stage. From the moment you walk into the theatre you feel the neighborly vibe. Administrators and staff offer warm welcomes, and friendly conversations. Patrons often become involved as actors, and actors become patrons. The family feel is evident, and the talent undeniable. Act3 Productions offers full season Broadway musicals and dramas, with casts of professional and amateur actors ranging in age from three to 78. The youth division, Act3 Arts Academy, offers classes, workshops and performance opportunities for local students in grades kindergarten through college. The theatre is the recipient of numerous awards too, including 52 Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Awards and three acting awards at the Junior Theater Festival (one for each year of participation). It’s that high level of professionalism from the staff and the attention to details in all areas of the production that attracted Dunwoody resident Liane LeMaster to Act3 Productions. As many people do, she found Act3 through her children. Her daughters were cast in the Arts Academy production of Godspell in the summer of 2012. In addition to being a magical experience for her girls, it was just plain fun. Liane graduated from Northwestern University and was a founding member of Chicago’s Amicus Theater, so community theatre is in her blood. She started acting in the main stage productions at Act3, and then joined the staff as Director of Youth Improv in 2013. She now teaches literature and composition at Georgia Perimeter College/Dunwoody and is a published award-winning short fiction writer. In addition, she serves as Director of Education for the Act3 Arts Academy and is directing the production company’s latest show Dog fight. What drew Liane to Dog fight was the gorgeous music and the writing. “The writers have taken great care to tell the story of a 22
Perimeter North Lifestyle | January 2016
pretty cruel tradition (the Marines hold a contest to see who can find the ugliest girl to bring to a dance) without reducing the characters to either victims or villains,” says LeMaster. “There is a complex emotional tension between these characters, which reflects the time period (the cusp of the Vietnam War) and the structure of the play allows the audience to experience a profound gift of empathy and compassion, despite the unlikely context.” “Plus,” she adds, “this cast is an incredibly gifted group of performers, who I think we will see great work from in the future on a national level.” Dog fight is set on the eve of three young Marine’s deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia. The young men set out for one final boys’ night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of compassion. In addition to LeMaster’s direction, the show features Sandy Springs resident John Coombs as Stevens, and Abbie Holland as Rose. Dunwoody resident Alyssa Jackson serves as the costume designer, and is also a founding member of the North Fulton Drama Club. Dog fight isn’t LeMaster’s first time directing. Before moving to Dunwoody, she directed large contemporary productions (Balm in Gilead), intimate ensemble pieces (Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune), musical premieres (Golem and the Yeti), and children and youth productions in Chicago. Last February she directed How I Learned to Drive at Act3. Dogfight runs from February 5 – 20 at Act3 Productions, 6285-R Roswell Road, Sandy Springs. For tickets visit Act3Productions.org.

Charles and wish you could buy in Atlanta their clothes for your children? Well, don’t worry! Now you can. Opening at 4209 Roswell Road in Buckhead, Mitylene is a children’s clothing store with more of a European feel — despite many of its lines being American. “We’re bringing a lot of designers that are new to Atlanta,” says Betsy Pomerantz, who grew up in Sandy Springs and now lives in Buckhead. “Our store will carry items that are definitely less traditional; we’re staying away from the Southern look with smocking and appliqués. You won’t find that here. It’s not the place.” Her business partner Laura Graber, also of Buckhead, explains what you will find are fun, bright clothes that have children still dressing and looking like children. “We’re dressing children to have style, not be mini adults. Think Harper Beckham, Prince Charles or how Jessica Alba dresses her kids. We love fashion, our kids love fashion and we’re hoping to dress other people’s kids who love fashion.” Although the women are excited about opening Mitylene, they have busy lives outside the retail arena. Betsy and her husband Brett, who works at Auto Trader, have three children. Beau is at Sara Smith Elementary School, Parker attends school at the Temple and baby Ty is still at home. Betsy is chairing the Ian’s Friends Foundation event, to benefit children’s brain cancer.

Laura and her husband, Allen, have two children, Finn and Eloise, along with two dogs a cat and a fish. She is very involved in the Trinity School auction and the Hope and Will gala to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The pair have been long time friends and, by now, call each other family. Laura, who has a background in retail and fashion, managed the Buckhead high-end jewelry store, Tassels, which is owned by Betsy’s mom, Juli Bauman. For her part, Betsy had a sweet, one-ofa-kind monogram business. Laura was having lunch with Betsy’s mom and saying she wants to open a kids store but she didn’t want to do it alone. Betsy’s mom signed Betsy (her daughter) up right then and there. “I didn’t see how she could do it because Betsy has three boys under six. Her mom said that was exactly why she needed to do it.” The next day they two were on the phone and three months later Mitylene is opening. “It really feels like a family here and we hope our customers feel it as well,” says Laura. Adding to the family feel is that the name Mitylene is the name of Betsy’s grandmother. “It sounded different but not too different or too trendy and European,” she says.
Both women are quick to point out that just because a child has a fashionable look doesn’t mean the clothes aren’t meant to be worn on the playground. “We have lots of casual stuff, leggings and cozy sweat tops to dressy dressy clothes,” says Betsy. “We have t-shirts for $19 and dresses for $350. Some of the boys clothes have a California surfer look. We want to market to everyone and have it so that everyone can come in and buy something.” Some of the lines include Oscar de la Renta, Rachel Riley, Johnnie-O, Anais & I and Sundek. In addition they are launching their own private label next year called mitt boys and mitylenegirls. According to Laura, the women are very price conscious. “We want to be fashionable and stay somewhat affordable. We’re not going crazy,” she says. “With every single piece we are conscious of the price. We pick out every single item down to the color. Every item is extremely curated and hand selected. There is nothing here that we wouldn’t put on our children and nothing they wouldn’t wear.” The women are supporters of fair trade lines, hand-made items and fashion lines from companies that are socially conscious and donate to children’s charities. “We have items that are hand-made in Peru, for instance. We also try to find and support local designers,” says Laura. January 2016 | Perimeter North Lifestyle
