Editor’s Letter
Hello, summer.
JULY 2015
E
very summer for the last few years, I’ve made a summer playlist that I listen to at the beach, while I work on this magazine, during runs in the wood or over tall cold pink drinks on the porch with friends.

These songs are old favorites like “Summertime,” by Will Smith and a more classic rendition of the same title by the amazing jazz vocalist, Eddie Jefferson. The list always includes a new title I just discovered (usually introduced by adorable friends), like “So Long Sweet Misery” by Brett Dennen, “Summer of a Heart” by Francois & The Atlas Mountains or Jessie J’s acoustic cover of “Rock With You.” It’s undoubtedly a mishmash compilation of genres, representing the many moods of Robert Lowe and Kerry Dyer summer (hey, that sounds like a song I know). share signature cocktails from their Mandarin Oriental menu with the editor. Back Porch Iced Tea, Georgia Peach and the Whiskey Bramble
Two summers ago, I burned CDs of my playlist and gave them to my pals, a mix tape of friendship, summer love (for my paddle board, Lake Michigan and family) and happy-go-luckiness. My dear, long-time friend Robin teaches dance at the University of Wisconsin and emailed me in the thick of winter that she had used the CD during a class and it made her think of our summer days sailing together. BOOM. I see Sally (who teaches elementary school in Annapolis) every July at the lake and she messaged me a few months ago to say she listens to the CD in her car on particularly dreary commutes. Perfect. Ode to the power of the summer songs. Find yours and share them this month while you toss a fresh salad on the porch for friends and family. Get inspired by the stunning summer salads in this month’s throwdown feature. We’ve listened to your requests and filled the pages of our feature with larger images (this month, by the talented Kathryn McCrary).

Work Together

Volunteers make a difference
ARTICLE ANNE H. BOATWRIGHT
N
othing keeps a strong community down, not even weather! Despite threats of severe spring thunderstorms on the morning of April 25, hundreds of committed volunteers turned out to volunteer their time and skills to make improvements for the Sandy Springs community at the 13th annual Volunteer for a Better Sandy Springs (VBSS) Day. Presented by Leadership Sandy Springs, a non-profit organization that trains professionals for stronger leadership and community interface, the event kicked off with a rally and an enthusiastic charge from Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul. Led by volunteer team leaders, participants chose one work site among 20 non-profit organizations, parks and public schools in which to serve for a half-day of work that included refreshing plant beds; planting spring annuals, shrubs and groundcover; painting interiors; organizing inventory; cleaning out closets; creating outdoor classrooms, herb and vegetable gardens, bagging trash and more. Support from numerous community-minded sponsors each year makes the event possible by providing funding for tools and equipment, plants and gardening materials, paint and cleaning supplies, and food and beverages to fuel the workers. But the labor is free! This year’s sites included Abernathy Arts Center, Community Assistance Center, Dorothy Benson Senior Multipurpose Center, Heritage Sandy Springs, Island Ford Park – CRNRA, Ison Springs Elementary School, Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful – Recycling Center, Lake Forest Elementary School, Mary Hall Freedom House, North Springs Charter High School, Sandy Springs Library (inside and outside), Sandy Springs local parks, Sandy Springs Tennis Center, Sandy Springs Charter Middle School, Spalding Drive Elementary School, Watershed Alliance of Sandy Springs, and Woodland Charter Elementary School. VBSS was conceived as a community project by Leadership Sandy Springs’ (LSS) class of 2002 and designed to coincide with Earth Day to engage volunteers in the cleanup and beautification of the city. Since 2002, VBSS has grown to a community-wide day of service in which Sandy Springs non-profits have received needed materials and volunteer hours, worth more than $425,000 in improvement to their facilities and grounds.

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | July 2015
Many volunteers come back each year and volunteer in various ways. School groups build this event into their service programs and civic organizations use VBSS as a means to serve the community. “One of the best aspects, aside from the work that gets accomplished,” says Carolyn Axt, retiring LSS executive director, “is seeing individuals get ‘hooked’ on volunteering and continue their involvement beyond this one day of service. It’s terrific to see families and groups working together to create a better community.” Steve Soteres, vice president of interior construction at Choate Construction, not only sponsors the event through his company but also volunteers along with his employees. He says, “Choate got involved in VBSS several years ago when we volunteered at Island Ford Park at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. We encourage our employees to bring their family and friends to spend a day in the park and volunteer. Additionally, our families discover a beautiful wildlife preserve with hiking trails that they can enjoy, right here in our own community.” Sherry Epstein, president of Watershed Alliance of Sandy Springs (WASS), takes her volunteers into the water of several of the creeks. “I really appreciate that WASS was offered an opportunity to be one of the VBSS worksites. There are countless educational moments for participants as they learn about the role of the watersheds in the life of the streams which lead to the river, opportunities to meet neighbors along the creeks, and a delightful sense of community as we work together. It does make this city ‘home.’ We really appreciated LSS’ program and the involvement of their volunteers with our organization.”

Get Automated ARTICLE VALERIE SHEPHERD
W
ith summer here and my mind as well as body lagging far behind, I was overjoyed to learn there was a newly opened Planet Beach Automated Spa located in Dunwoody Village. Always one intrigued by something “new,” I thought an automated spa sounded like just what my pale, end-of-school year, worn-out-self needed. As I checked into the front desk, I was given an overview of the spa, which is open seven days a week to members. Whether you choose to come in a couple times monthly or every single day, it’s up to you with all of the machines at your fingertips. Only have 20 minutes and want to listen to a guided meditation in one of the massage chairs? How about a day where you have time to get a couple treatments to help whittle your middle? Great - because the motto here seems to be go for it! Dunwoody Planet Beach Spa currently offers 10 different automated stations each fulfilling one of three main goals: Relax, Glow, and Renew. Since I was already “relaxed” (hello, I was kid free for a couple hours) I decided to focus on Glow and Renew. For my first treatment I spent a relaxing half-hour in their Saunatox – a Detoxing Sauna Bed. Oh, and did I mention that this was no ordinary sauna because not only was it dry heat, has several settings (mine weight management), but it had a built in tablet where I could listen to Pandora or watch Netflix. Catching up on Game of Thrones has never been spent in a more time effective way. Continuing with my mission to “Renew”, I was treated to their most popular automated spa machine, the Hydro-derma Fusion.

With the promise of hydrating skin from head to toe via radiant heat and steam working together while a slight vibration kicked my lymphatic system into high gear, I was more than up for trying this out. I’m not going to sugar coat it – it was very very (very) hot while laying in my space age looking capsule during the 20-minute service. However, after I stepped out I immediately felt freshly renewed, as well as the scale the next morning seemed to like me better (2 pounds better to be exact). For my final automated service I was treated to the pbGlow Spray Tan. In less than five minutes in the automated machine I had transformed into a sun-kissed goddess. I was glowing and freshly moisturized, so much so that the ladies at my son’s swim practice that night asked why my skin looked so good. See one can go from pale and stressed to glowing and renewed in a matter of hours, I’m living proof. As I left my morning of heaven, I took a spin around the non-intimidating boutique and realized they have their very own line of skin enhancing, tan lengthening, teeth whitening, migraine zapping, and nutritional supplement products (just to name a few). Yep, gave a new meaning to a one-stop-shop for health both on the inside and out. I’m thrilled at not only my results, but even more that Planet Beach Automated Spa in Dunwoody is geared for people like me who want advanced services, a non-pressure environment, and the ability to set the time and pace I get my relax, renew or glow on. Now I’m summer ready – mission accomplished! PlanetBeach.com/dunwoodyvillage

iving here in Perimeter North, we spend our days battling traffic, steeling ourselves against more stressors than we realize. No wonder so many new spas have opened in our community. Lucky for us! With many spas offering seemingly identical services, why chose one over another? When we look for a spa to treat ourselves, we are also looking for an escape, a beautiful oasis of relaxation that puts them at ease the moment we walk in the door. Rather than visiting a cold, chain spa location with no personality you can be transported to warm, welcoming European-style spa that caters to your every need. Luckily, Perimeter North readers, you have the ideal spa right in your neighborhood. Sufii Day Spa provides the ambiance of luxury, peace and well-being. Local spa owner, Amy Bafi, opened her spa after looking for a large space and an ideal location, finding the perfect spot in Johns Creek. Nestled between the Country Club of the South, Country Club of Roswell, and St. Ives, the spa spans three suites and has now been providing services for a full year. Focusing on relaxation and rejuvenation of the mind, body, and spirit, Amy is

passionate in ensuring that her guests every needs are not just met but exceeded. The plentiful seating area can accommodate large groups for corporate and group events, parties, and showers. Guests can chat as they enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments such as wine, herbal tea, fruits, nuts, and chocolates. The spa is also able to provide guests with lunch from several nearby restaurants. Beyond the large relaxation area, the spa features 11 individually decorated treatment rooms, (four which accommodate couples,) and a hand and foot area outfitted with decadent chairs and gauzy curtains. There are also two large, private shower rooms, as well as lockers for guests’ personal belongings. Scheduling is staggered in an effort to maintain privacy as guests move between treatments. Providing a full list of services was not the only thing on Amy’s mind when she envisioned her perfect spa. She wanted to provide unique treatments original to her location. So while you will still see your favorite services, you will also have the option to try something new such
as the Lomi-Lomi or bamboo specialty massages or a Chocolate Facial Peel. For facial treatments she promotes healthy skin and focuses on pampering and product. Her estheticians are pros at microdermabrasion and a variety of peels. All products used in treatments and sold at the spa are all natural and paraben-free. The aromatherapy treatments incorporate essential oils into the service and are also diffused into your treatment room, allowing for maximum exposure. Hands and feet are treated to so much more than manicures, pedicures, and polishes at Sufii Day Spa. Anti-aging hand treatments and Bio-freeze foot massages are just a few of the specialty hand and foot treatments. With sanitation being of the utmost importance, foot baths feature direct water lines and new bags of tools are opened in front of each client. Summer's Sweetest Salads Local produce stars in our salad throw-down. ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY KATHRYN MCCRARY
W
e did it again. Following in the fork prints of past throw-downs (remember the mac ‘n cheese challenge? the summer cocktail sip-off? the holiday sweets shoot out?), we asked a few choice restaurant chefs, home delivery chefs and event catering chefs to head to the nearest garden and toss up a fabulous fresh summer salad for this issue. We readied our forks at the gorgeous Mandarin Oriental, in the Taipan Lounge overlooking the picturesque English Garden. Our talented photographer, Kathryn McCrary tiptoed between the early summer raindrops to shoot the salads in the English Garden, tucked away behind busy Peachtree Street in Buckhead. Get inspired and find the closest farmers market to enjoy the season’s freshest produce for one of these fabulous salads.
Georgia Kale Salad Our Blue Ribbon Favorite CHEF TODD ANNIS
Bold American Events Toss it: Kale and red cabbage chiffonade, carrots, housemade Georgia pralines, diced Georgia apples, blue cheese wedge (Sweet Grass Dairy), Meyer lemon vinaigrette. Pack salad in serving size molds and invert on plate, top with pralines. What the judges said: The sweet pralines complemented the tartness of the salad and the vinaigrette cut the usual bitterness of the kale. The smooth blue cheese added a welcome complexity. I’m now a kale convert! Toss it: fingerling potatoes, Terra Dolce Farms olive oil (Lyons, GA), lemon rind and juice, Dijon mustard, chopped arugula, kalamata olives, chopped parsley/basil/chives from Peachtree Road Farmers Market. (We wish her luck with her new baby!) For this salad, we simply suggest you substitute out a vinaigrette for any mayonnaise in your favorite potato salad recipe. This will lighten the caloric punch and give you a new lease on your summer picnic array. You’ll find the recipe on our Facebook page this month. Share yours, too! Your Neighbor Rendering of the new Peachtree Dunwoody Ronald McDonald House
Home Sweet Ronald McDonald House ATLANTANS MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR FAMILIES WITH ILL AND INJURED CHILDREN ARTICLE BRINA POTVIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
M
arcia and Howard Rohan have been residents of Brookhaven for more than 35 years. They have three children and live in a blossoming neighborhood. But when their 18-year-old son Jason was in a head-on car accident in 1990, their lives changed forever. “One moment the world is one way, the way it’s supposed to be, and the next moment your life is turned upside down,” Marcia says. “Although the accident happened 25 years ago and Jason is doing well today, the emotion of it never completely fades. It’s raw, real and I can bring myself right back to that night." Jason was the third child in the Rohan’s neighborhood to suffer from a brain injury during a span of nine months. Their community was shaken, but the Rohan’s were overwhelmed with how supportive their community remained. “The two other families encouraged and uplifted us during our experience and we were able to do the same for them,” describes Marcia. “Because of the impact our support system had on us, we wanted to do the same for others.” Not long after Jason’s accident, the Rohan’s fulfilled their promise to help others by becoming volunteers at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The Peachtree Dunwoody location is one of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities’ (ARMHC) two Houses that provide accommodations and support services for families with ill and injured children. Since the Rohan’s first volunteered in 2004, their story has become a beacon of hope at the House. They empathize with the families and understand that words like cancer, accident, or transplant are words

that change a child’s life as well as the lives of the entire family. “My own family’s experience has helped me remember that bad days happen but it makes the victories all the more meaningful,” Marcia says. “We love being able to laugh, cry, and celebrate with the families at ARMHC. It’s a safe haven for them to be exactly where they are, deal with their circumstances in the ways that feel most natural to them, but most importantly, to be together.” The day that Marcia and Howard first walked into the Ronald McDonald House, they knew it was where they were meant to serve. Today, they can be found making a meal for the families and sharing the joys of being a volunteer. Although the families at the Houses are experiencing devastating circumstances, they are encouraged and uplifted by volunteers like Marcia and Howard. When Marcia encourages others to volunteer for one of the Houses, she tells them, “It’s a happy place.” Volunteers are the heartbeat of the House. They help support worried parents so they can focus on what matters most, the health of their child. Currently, ARMHC needs individual or group volunteers to prepare meals or host activities for the families. There are also many wish-list items and registry needs to help furnish and stock the new Peachtree Dunwoody House, which is on track to open to families late this year. For too long, limited capacity at the former 11-bedroom House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road forced ARMHC to turn away many families who were counting on a "home away from home" during a critical time in their lives. With the generous support of the local
Atlanta community and beyond, an $18.5 million capital campaign was completed to fundraise and build a new House that will serve thousands more families for decades to come. It will feature 31 guest rooms with private baths, full ADA accessibility, a sustainable design built to LEED standards, a kitchen with dining areas and an innovative, indoor tree house to aid in healing through play. “This new House will dramatically increase our impact and nearly triple our capacity to provide a welcoming home for families whose children are battling life threatening medical conditions,” says Beth Howell, president and CEO of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. “The quality of healthcare in Atlanta will improve as thousands more families in crisis will have a place to stay together and heal together.” When completed, the new Peachtree Dunwoody Ronald McDonald House will empower families and children for successful outcomes by addressing their unique needs and sustaining them in the midst of difficult circumstances. For more information on volunteering at the Peachtree Dunwoody House, please contact Volunteer Services Manager, Cat Lewis, at catherine.lewis@armhc.org. To contribute items that will help make this new House a “home” to the families it serves, visit ARMCH.org

he growing legion of Mini Cooper fans and those intrigued by the hatchback’s extraordinarily muscular physique were further won over when Mini Cooper S Hardtop 4 Door was finally introduced. The Minis have always— and justly—boasted about their “go-kart” feel resulting from it nimble drive, impressive sport suspension, and a haymaker of a punch that left virtually nothing to be desired thanks to its 2.0-liter, 189 horsepower engine. Getting this Moonwalk Gray Metallic-hued model with a welcomed six-speed Getrag manual transmission (an option that is unfortunately becoming more extinct in the auto world); Sport seats; an Electronic Braking System; five-passenger seating; and three different

Parting Thoughts
I Live Next Door to What’s-His-Name WORDS JIM COSGROVE
T
his month is our street’s annual block party. What shall we bring? Something meatless, of course. Fortunately there are other vegetarians on our street, so we don’t feel like complete odd balls. But the only way we found that out was by attending a previous block party. That’s where we found out that we have Presbyterians and Libertarians and a few septuagenarians on the block. There’s a band leader, a drama professor, a fudge maker, a former teacher-of-the-year, a cartoonist and two stay-at-home dads. It’s amazing what you can learn about your neighbors when you venture out the front door and share a meal together. Living in the suburbs, we have, by design, bought into a more private back porch culture. It’s a different world from the front porch/front stoop culture of my youth where, for better or worse, we knew our neighbors and most of their business. While visiting Mexico many years ago, I met a man who was fascinated by American culture. He said, “I hear that in the U.S. you can live next door to people for 20 years and never speak to them. Is that really true?” “Yep,” I said. “Sad, but true.” In our current back porch world, if you play it right, you could leave your home in the morning, get into your car in the garage, drive to work, park in another garage and return home in the evening without having to see or talk to a neighbor. you wouldn’t have to encounter nature either, as you’d be safely encased in a temperature-controlled environment from your bedroom to your cubicle, while traveling on paved surfaces. A person could go months or years without actually touching the earth. This is fascinating and mind-blowing all at once. But the block party gives us an excuse to be civil humans. And we all know that everyone else has plastered on their smiles and is thinking the same things, like “I’m supposed to know you, but I can’t remember your name.” Thank goodness our neighbor Bob (who organizes the shindig every year) provides nametags, because it’s hard to remember these folks you only see once a year. When we cleaned up, there were far more bottles than the six we brought. And even if the conversations hover around the mundane – who moved in and who moved out to the latest remodeling project to what so-and-so is doing to keep the rabbits out of her hostas – just bear with it, because you not only might learn something, you just might enjoy yourself.
