Is anyone else saying to themselves, “How is it December already?” With each passing month, I find time slipping by faster and faster. As a child, I recall my parents sharing a similar sentiment, but didn’t fully understand — but now as a parent myself, I can relate and relate hard!
The holiday season holds a special place in my heart. I grew up in a household that embraced every excuse to celebrate. From tree decorating to driving around the var ious neighborhoods looking at Christmas light decorations, it’s all a joy. And yes, in our house, Mariah Carey will be on full blast from November 29 through December 25. (Fun fact: Last year, the Christmas spirit hit so strong that Matt left the lights up all year long! Or maybe that was an accident…)
But in all seriousness, it’s easy to get swept up in the frenzy—gifts, school performances, parties, holiday travel, and everything else in between. This time of year can fly by, and it is important to pause and reconnect with what truly matters.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce our inaugural “Holidays and Giving” December issue. This issue is filled with stories that we hope will warm your heart as the mornings get crisper and the evenings cozier. One feature we are particularly proud of is our Annual Giving Campaign. If you know of someone in the Valley who is going through a tough time, we invite you to nominate them. You’ll find all the details inside this issue. Together, we can make a difference and give back to the people who need it most this season.
Being on the giving side of the holidays brings a unique joy that words can’t quite capture. Whether it’s a thoughtful gift, a meaningful donation, or simply the time spent with loved ones, we hope this issue inspires you to give and share from the heart.
As we gather with friends and family, let’s embrace the spirit of generosity, the magic of the season, and the warmth of our incredible community. At Santa Ynez Valley City Lifestyle, we are grateful to call you part of our extended family, and we look forward to sharing more beauty, culture, and connection with you in the new year.
From all of us here, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a joyful New Year!
Go Pirates!
Cheers,
December 2024

For nearly five decades, the Vikings of Solvang have spread holiday magic through their annual Christmas party for children with special needs. What began in 1976 as an intimate gathering has blossomed into a heartwarming event that now serves hundreds. Hosted at the SYV Marriott in Buellton, this beloved celebration has become a cornerstone of the holiday season, bringing joy, community, and festive fun to all involved.
HOW MUCH HAS THIS PARTY GROWN OVER THE YEARS?
The children’s Christmas party has grown tremendously since it first began. Back in December 1976, the party was a small, intimate gathering at the Royal Scandinavian Hotel with about 25 kids. As the event gained momentum and more families became involved, we moved to larger venues to accommodate the growing number of attendees. For the last ten years, the SYV Marriott has generously hosted the party, and their contribution has been invaluable. Their willingness to forgo the venue cost and their staff’s hands-on help with decorating have helped make this event possible. Last year, we were thrilled to host 700 children and their caregivers, a testament to how much this tradition means to the Vikings of Solvang and the community we serve. What started as a simple way to give back has blossomed into a cherished annual event that brings joy to hundreds of families each holiday season.
WHAT ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT?
This event has truly become the heart and soul of the Viking calendar. Every year, it’s the highlight we all look forward to. Planning begins in January and we’re dedicated to making each party even more special than the last. What makes it truly meaningful is the way our Viking volunteers come together, spending countless hours decorating the venue and ensuring it is transformed into a festive wonderland. For many of us, this party is more than just a day - it’s the moment when the Christmas season truly begins, not only for the kids and caregivers but for all the Vikings and their families. It’s a beautiful reminder of the spirit of giving and togetherness that defines this time of year.
WHAT NEW SPECIAL EVENTS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS PARTY?
The 2024 Kids’ Christmas Party marks our 46th annual celebration, and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it unforgettable. As soon as the children arrive, they’ll be greeted by Viking volunteers decked out as Christmas characters like Frosty, Rudolph, and even the Grinch, bringing the magic of the season to life from the moment they step through the door. A festive lunch will be served for all attendees, accompanied by live Christmas music by the Valley Troubadours filling the room with holiday cheer. Each teacher will receive a special gift card to support their classroom needs, and no Christmas party would be complete without a visit and photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus. To top it all off, every child will take home a tub of delicious Olsen’s cookies, adding a sweet touch to their holiday experience. It’s going to be a heartwarming, joy-filled day for everyone –kids, care givers, and Vikings alike.

HOW ACTION ROOFING BUILDS
COMMUNITY FROM THE GROUND UP
BY MATT DEMARCUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
As December rolls in, the air turns crisp and festive lights adorn our neighborhoods, signaling a season of joy, reflection, and, importantly, giving. In the heart of the Central Coast and more specifically, the Santa Ynez Valley, one family-owned business exemplifies the spirit of the season through both its professional ethos and its community contributions: Action Roofing, owned and operated by “Action” Jack Martin, a man whose values are deeply rooted in family, hard work, and philanthropy.
Jack Martin Jr. draws inspiration from his father, Jack Martin Sr., who rose from humble beginnings to become a vice president of a major shipping company. “I admire everything he did for himself to become successful,” Jack reflects. His father’s steadfast work ethic instilled in him the importance of diligence, a trait that has guided him throughout his career. Starting Action Roofing in 1985 with just $1,000 and a pickup truck, Jack has built a legacy that combines professional success with a strong commitment to his family—both by blood and by choice.
The concept of family in Jack’s life extends beyond his immediate relatives. With a workforce of 160 employees, many of whom have become like family over the years of shared experiences, Jack emphasizes that his workplace is a community. “You develop a family just like the one you are related to at home,” he shares. This philosophy has fostered a collaborative and supportive environment at Action Roofing, where everyone contributes to the company’s success.
Jack did not initially plan for his company to employ so many family members, but as Action Roofing grew, so
did his connections with the team. “Nothing was done intentionally, but it just kind of evolved,” he says. His respect for his employees is evident; he values their hard work and dedication, acknowledging that each individual plays a vital role in the business’s accomplishments.
Beyond roofing, Action Roofing is known for its philanthropic endeavors in both Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley. The Martin’s take great pride in supporting local schools and youth sports programs, believing that these activities are crucial during the formative years of children’s lives. “High school can be tough for kids,” he states. “Sports provide a great avenue to excel, build camaraderie, and foster self-esteem.”
This commitment to giving back is not just about financial support; it reflects Jack’s understanding of the challenges young people face. By helping to fund sports programs and community events, this is his way of making a tangible difference in the lives of local youth, encouraging them to thrive, inspire motivation, and, ultimately, stay out of trouble. In addition to sports sponsorships, Action Roofing participates in various local charity drives, food banks, and scholarship programs, aiming to uplift and support local families in need. Jack’s belief in community support is not only a business strategy but a personal mission—one that resonates deeply with the values he learned from his father.
When reflecting on his journey, Jack shares invaluable advice for today’s youth. “The only way you achieve success is to work hard, study, and once you get your degree, you have to go out and prove yourself,” he advises. His own life has been a testament to
“Jack’s belief in community support is not only a business strategy but a personal mission—one that resonates deeply with the values he learned from his father.”
“This legacy of hard work and generosity is the true gift he aims to pass down, reinforcing the notion that giving back is as important as achieving personal success.”
this philosophy. Having experienced both triumphs and setbacks, Jack understands that the road to success is often paved with hard work and perseverance.
His belief in learning from your mistakes is particularly poignant. “I have made a lot of mistakes,” he admits. “But at the end of the day, you want to have made more correct decisions than wrong ones.” This perspective is not just practical; it is a reminder that resilience is key to growth and success.
As the holiday season approaches, Jack and Peg Martin reflect on how Christmas has evolved for their family. With three children of their own and seven granddaughters all under the age of seven, the holiday spirit has taken on a new meaning. “When our kids were little, we loved getting up early and having them open presents,” he reminisces. Now, the joy comes from simply being together. “Christmas is all about family, no matter what the age of everyone is,” he affirms.
For the Martin’s, the most important aspect of the holidays is the time spent together with loved ones. “It lets us all think about how great of life we have with our families,” he says. This sentiment rings true as the family gathers for both Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, reflecting on their blessings rather than focusing on material success.
As the owner of Action Roofing, Jack exemplifies how a strong work ethic, commitment to family, and dedication to community can intertwine beautifully. His story serves as a reminder that the holidays are not just about receiving but also about giving—whether your giving is through acts of kindness, support for local initiatives, or simply cherishing time with loved ones. Ultimately, it’s these moments of connection and generosity that define the true spirit of the season and leave a lasting impact on those around us.
Jack’s dedication to hard work ensures that his legacy is one of resilience and empowerment. He hopes to inspire his grandchildren and generations to come to embrace the same values of perseverance and community spirit, teaching them that success isn’t just measured by financial gain, but by the positive impact one has on others. This legacy of hard work and generosity is the true gift he aims to pass down, reinforcing the notion that giving back is as important as achieving personal success.
In a world often focused on individual achievement, Jack’s approach is refreshing. He illustrates that true success lies in the connections we forge and the legacy we leave behind. As families come together this Christmas season, the Martin family story is a celebration of family values, hard work, and the joy of giving back to the community—a reminder that the most meaningful gifts are those rooted in love, gratitude, and shared moments.
As we navigate the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, let us take a cue from “Action” Jack and remember that it’s the relationships we build and the lives we touch that truly define the spirit of the holidays. In this time of giving, we are reminded that the greatest gifts often come from the heart, just as Jack has demonstrated through his life’s work and commitment to family and community. It’s these acts of kindness and connection that linger far beyond the season, creating a legacy of love and generosity for years to come.
Ultimately, Jack’s journey serves as an inspiration to all. As he gathers with his family this Christmas, he reflects on the legacy he is building—not just in business, but in the lives of those he’s touched along the way. It’s a beautiful reminder that the holiday season is not only about celebrating our achievements but also about honoring the people and moments that bring meaning to our lives—and giving back to ensure others feel that joy too.
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

• Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first.
• Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more.
• Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement.
• Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.
• Fig Jelly
• Honey
• Variety of Cheeses
• Salami or meat of choice
• Olives (provide a variety)
• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut
• Grapes, berries, persimmon
• Crackers
Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.
