The Love Local Issue

Love Local
This February, we wanted to really highlight the “Love Local” theme. This is our aim every month, but this issue is dedicated to highlighting this wonderful place we call home. We cover how Pam Gnekow is dedicated to provide everything she can for our seniors and veterans with her SYV Community Outreach non-profit. The details are astounding and her passion for this area really is something to behold.

Another often overlooked theme for February is Valentine’s Day. But have no fear! We have highlighted an amazing partner in Sister B Studios to help the procrastinators reading this really take their time and plan out their Valentine’s Day. Lord knows I have been scrambling last minute to find something for my wife (if you tell her, I’ll deny it) and we are trying our best to help you avoid that this time around. From areas to picnic to possible proposal locations, there are so many picturesque venues in our little valley that can transport you away to romantic wonderland.
Each time we write these letters, the word “gratitude” always comes to mind. My family and I love this valley so much, and sharing these stories always leaves us with an immense sense of gratitude. We live here, work here, shop here, and it couldn’t make us happier.
Thank you all for reading and make sure to live and love local.

DIY VALENTINES
Simple Projects to Celebrate at Home
The first Valentines were handmade in the 18th century, long before printing presses and mass-produced options. Today, handmade signifies the ultimate in personal mots d’amour. Enjoy these sweet projects as a couple, a family, or with friends.
1. Arts
Create heart ornaments to hang on a Valentine’s Day tree. The ornaments can be used as clue cards for a Valentine's Day scavenger hunt. Participants find their picture on the tree and hunt for a hidden treasure.
2.Sweets
A home-based holiday is made complete with a dessert table. Whether made from scratch or store bought, a collection of decorated confections is as beautiful as the treats are delectable to eat.
3.Sentiments
Poetry is a most personal way to express your heart. No need to be intimidated by haiku, a short form of Japanese poetry. While there are several variations of the form, a traditional place to begin is with a seasonal word that divides 17 syllables into three lines of five/ seven/five. Simple and sweet.

PAM GNEKOW’S MISSION TO HELP SENIORS, VETERANS, AND FAMILIES THRIVE
The Heart Behind SYV Community Outreach
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT DEMARCUS

As long as there’s a need, SYV
Community Outreach
will be here to meet it.
In our scenic Santa Ynez Valley, it’s easy to overlook the hidden struggles of its residents amidst the idyllic vineyards and rolling hills. Pam Gnekow, however, has spent nearly two decades uncovering these challenges and addressing them head-on as the director of SYV Community Outreach. Her organization provides a safety net for seniors, families, veterans, and other underserved community members, ensuring no one is left behind in this seemingly affluent area.
“It was surprising to learn just how many people here live below the poverty line,” Pam shared. “This valley is known for its wealth, but behind the scenes, there are families, babies, seniors, and veterans who need support. I’m proud to have spent 19 years making a difference in their lives.”
SYV Community Outreach’s flagship program, Meals on Wheels, exemplifies the organization’s ethos. Every day, anywhere from 400-410 meals are delivered to seniors and veterans across the valley, from all the various SYV towns to Los Alamos. These are no ordinary meals—they’re crafted with care by Chef Daniel, a former executive chef at the Landsby Hotel. “Our Meals on Wheels recipients enjoy dishes made with fresh, local ingredients,” Pam explained. “Incorporating the valley’s bounty is one of the changes I introduced. People deserve nutritious, high-quality food.”
Meals on Wheels provides not only fresh, nutritious food but also daily wellness checks, reducing risks of isolation and accidents. The program partners with the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center to create meals for patients undergoing chemotherapy and has been recognized by the USDA as one of two Veterans Distribution Food Service Centers in Santa Barbara County.
Another one of SYV Community Outreach’s most unique offerings is its veteran-specific support. The organization runs a dedicated room where veterans can “shop” for food and receive a daily prepared lunch if needed.
“The veteran room feels small, but it’s like a Marry Poppins room—it’s as big as it needs to be,” Pam joked. The space also houses a liaison to assist veterans with VA paperwork, cutting through the often-overwhelming bureaucracy. “We want to make their lives easier. They’ve served us; now it’s our turn to serve them.”
SYV Community Outreach thrives thanks to its robust network of volunteers, whom Pam describes as the organization’s backbone. Betty, an 84-year-old volunteer, drives for Meals on Wheels three days a week and helps distribute food.
“Our volunteers are amazing,” Pam said. “Their dedication is the reason we can serve so many people.”
The organization also hosts a variety of events to raise funds, including the Cars and Cowboys fundraiser, which combines classic cars, live music, and auctions to support Meals on Wheels. “Every penny raised goes directly to the program,” Pam emphasized.
SYV Community Outreach’s services extend far beyond food. The Buellton Senior Center, which operates under the organization, offers resources such as transportation to medical appointments, housing assistance, and even a thrift store that provides affordable clothing and goods.
Programs like the Holy Grounds Café create a sense of community where anyone can socialize over coffee and pastries. “It’s not just about meeting basic needs,” Pam explained. “It’s about fostering connections and ensuring everyone feels valued.”
Not only is Pam hustling from the kitchen to the dining area to the distributing tables to make sure everything is going smoothly, she also stops to greet every person that wants to speak to her. The controlled chaos that is this community center indeed speaks to where Pam’s heart lies: in service of others. She greets the regulars, points out where to hang decorations, and stops to offer council to a distraught patron who very recently lost her mother and needs someone to talk to. The Santa Ynez Valley is truly lucky to have someone with such a great heart running this ship. Of course, Pam is not doing this task alone. Her partner of 10 years, Linda Linton, has been her director and also a wonderful friend to these volunteers and patrons alike.
As Pam reflects on nearly two decades of service, her commitment to the Santa Ynez Valley remains steadfast. “I’ve raised my kids here. This community is my home,” she said. “And as long as there’s a need, SYV Community Outreach will be here to meet it.”
For Pam Gnekow, leading SYV Community Outreach is more than a job—it’s a calling. Through their core values of inclusivity, compassion, and community, we know that future will be bright for this wonderful organization. It’s amazing how a little love and care can make a huge difference, every single day. These success stories serve as inspiration to keep going, and do even bigger and better things for the Santa Ynez Valley.

CHAMPIONING FAMILIES, PHILANTHROPY, AND SMALL-TOWN CHARM IN THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY
ARTICLE BY SARA DEMARCUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LENA BRITT PHOTOGRAPHY
Kelly Mahan Herrick, a partner of the Calcagno & Hamilton Real Estate Group of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, exemplifies what it means to “love local.” Through her professional expertise, philanthropic spirit, and dedication to family, Kelly has become a cornerstone of the SYV community, creating a legacy of connection and care.
Kelly’s journey in real estate began over a decade ago in Santa Barbara, where she honed her skills in marketing and writing for one of the region’s top real estate teams, which she is still a part of today. Her transition to the SYV marked a pivotal moment, as she discovered a calling that went beyond buying and selling homes. “One of my favorite demographics to work with is young families moving from Santa Barbara,” Kelly shares. “I love helping them sell their homes there and find their dream homes here. Buellton, in particular, excites me; it’s an up-and-coming community with its vibe and culture, perfect for families.”
Her work is fueled by a passion for showcasing the area’s charm and quality of life. “I love driving clients around, discussing schools, pointing out clean parks, and highlighting the serene views and property values,” Kelly explains. “It’s about helping them envision a life here—a quieter, more relaxed way of living.”
As a mother and leader, Kelly fosters opportunities for local families to connect and thrive. The Facebook group she founded, Santa Ynez Valley Moms, has become a hub for over 1,000 members to discuss family life in the area. “It’s been amazing to see playgroups, book clubs, and even homeschooling pods form from this group,” she says.
Kelly has also organized impactful initiatives like toy swaps, school supplies, and food drives. One of her most memorable moments was a food drive in Buellton that collected nearly a thousand pounds for SYV Community Outreach. “The generosity of my neighbors was overwhelming,” Kelly reflects. “It reaffirmed why I love this community so much. We’re a tight-knit group of people genuinely caring for one another.”

Her dedication to giving back extends into local schools, where she serves on the Oak Valley Elementary PTSA, working to enhance the educational experience for local children. She also contributes to the Santa Ynez Association of Realtors MLS Committee, ensuring the area’s real estate market remains accessible.
As a resident of the Valley, Kelly has witnessed its growth and evolution. Since the pandemic, Buellton has become a haven for young families and first-time homebuyers, drawn by the combination of affordability and lifestyle. “Buellton has seen a demographic shift, with more families recognizing the value of living here,” Kelly notes. “With larger homes and outdoor spaces at more reasonable prices, it’s an idyllic place to raise children while enjoying a rural charm and small-town vibe.”
Balancing a demanding career with her philanthropic efforts and family life might seem daunting, but Kelly thrives on the flexibility her profession provides. “No two days are ever the same, and that’s what I love,” she says. “This flexibility allows me to be present for my daughter and include her in my volunteer efforts, whether it’s shopping for school supplies or helping with food drives. It’s a way of instilling values in her while contributing to the community.”
Looking ahead, Kelly is eager to continue her work both in real estate and in the community. Her plans include hosting
a spring picnic in Buellton, another food drive in the fall, and other volunteer opportunities as they arise. She encourages others to get involved as well, offering this advice: “Find a cause that brings you joy. Supporting organizations like SYV Community Outreach has been deeply fulfilling for me, especially knowing how much they help families in need.”
For Kelly, “loving local” is not just a philosophy but a way of life. As a real estate agent, she sees her role as one of stewardship, ensuring the community continues to thrive. “My livelihood depends on the quality of the community,” she explains. “Being involved keeps me informed, connected, and in a position to share what makes this Valley so special with prospective buyers.”
Her dedication to the valley extends to supporting its local businesses and vendors in her business. Her husband Jason Herrick owns a specialty wine and liquor store in Montecito; together, they champion the importance of shopping locally, recognizing its role in sustaining the area’s economic and cultural vibrancy.
Through her work, philanthropy, and advocacy, Kelly Mahan Herrick demonstrates how one person’s passion and dedication can enrich an entire community. Her efforts serve as a testament to the profound impact of loving local and making a difference where it matters most.
