On Making Investments That Count…

Dear Friends,

When we hear the word invest, our minds often jump to finances—stocks, savings accounts, real estate. But investment is so much bigger than money. It’s about where we place our time, our energy, and our love. It’s about making choices today that create a stronger, healthier, and more fulfilling tomorrow.

Every day, we make investments—whether we realize it or not. Choosing to take a walk instead of scrolling through our phones is an investment in our health. Setting aside moments for family dinner, despite our busy schedules, is an investment in relationships. Teaching our children the value of hard work and resilience is an investment in their future. Even something as simple as tending to a garden, learning a new skill, or supporting a local business is a choice to invest in growth, in community, in something meaningful.

This month, we’re looking at investment through a wide lens. We’ll explore how taking care of your body is the most valuable investment you’ll ever make—one that pays off in energy, longevity, and quality of life. We’ll talk about financial investments, like securing your legacy with smart estate planning or making a mortgage work for your future. We’ll also dive into the personal side of investing—what it means to step into a new chapter in life, how Campbell High School’s CAPS program is preparing students for success, and how our very own Spartan football team is rising to new heights.

And let’s not forget the simplest yet most meaningful investments—those made in the quiet, everyday moments. The laughter shared around a dinner table. The time spent teaching a child something new. The effort put into strengthening friendships, celebrating milestones, or supporting a neighbor in need.

At the end of the day, the best investments are the ones that leave a lasting impact—not just on our bank accounts, but on our hearts. So this month, let’s challenge ourselves to invest wisely. Not just in financial security, but in health, in happiness, in the people and places that bring us joy.

Because when we invest in the things that truly matter, the return is priceless.

With gratitude,

April 2025

We plan for retirement, save for a rainy day, and invest in our homes, careers, and families—but how often do we think of our health as an investment? Prioritizing regular checkups, preventive screenings, and lifestyle choices today is one of the best ways to ensure a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life. The team at Family Practice Centers emphasizes that proactive healthcare isn’t just about treating illness—it’s about preventing it in the first place. By taking small, consistent steps to care for your body, you can significantly reduce your risk of chronic conditions and avoid complications that impact your quality of life.

SMALL INVESTMENTS, BIG RETURNS

One of the most effective ways to invest in your health is to make preventive care a priority. Annual exams and routine screenings catch potential issues early, often before symptoms appear. For women, this includes cervical cancer screenings with pap smears and mammograms for breast cancer detection. Men should consider prostate cancer screenings between the ages of 40 and 50. Both men and women are advised to begin colon cancer screenings at age 40. Skin checks with a dermatologist can also help detect early signs of skin cancer. Another common but often silent condition is high blood pressure. Left unchecked, hypertension can lead to serious complications like heart attack and stroke. Regular doctor visits allow for early detection and management of this and other chronic conditions, keeping you on track for long-term wellness.

THE POWER OF SMALL, SUSTAINABLE CHANGES

Beyond doctor visits, the choices we make every day play a major role in our long-term health. While drastic lifestyle overhauls can feel overwhelming, small and consistent adjustments can have a lasting impact. Improving your diet, incorporating movement into your daily routine, and managing stress effectively all contribute to better cardiovascular and mental health. These changes don’t have to be complicated—even minor improvements in nutrition, a short daily walk, or setting aside time for self-care can yield significant benefits over time.

PRIORITIZING HEALTH IN A BUSY WORLD

Finding time for healthcare can feel like a challenge, especially for those juggling work, family, and other responsibilities. However, spacing out medical appointments throughout the year can make them more manageable. A helpful approach is to create a simple checklist of necessary visits—annual physicals, screenings, dental check-ups, and vision exams—and schedule them at regular intervals rather than all at once.

For those who have put their health on the back burner, it’s never too late to start. The first step is to establish care with a trusted primary care provider who can guide you through necessary screenings and help create a personalized wellness plan. From there, focusing on specialist visits, dental and vision exams, and manageable lifestyle changes can help put you back on the path to better health.

INVESTING IN YOURSELF

At the end of the day, prioritizing your health is one of the best investments you can make. The choices you make today directly impact your future well-being. Whether it’s scheduling that long-overdue check-up, making time for a short walk, or adding more nutrient-rich foods to your plate, every small effort adds up. By taking proactive steps now, you’re giving yourself the best chance at a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life.

Unlocking the Door to Smart Investing

Buying a home isn’t just about having a place to call your own—it’s one of the smartest financial moves you can make. Unlike renting, where your monthly payments don’t build equity, homeownership allows you to invest in something that grows in value over time.

Matt Garcia, a Senior Loan Officer at Supreme Lending, has helped countless buyers make smart, confident decisions about homeownership. He puts it simply: owning a home is one of the quickest ways to build wealth. Instead of paying someone else’s mortgage, you’re investing in your future. And the best part? Your home could appreciate in value, meaning more financial stability down the road.

A GREAT MORTGAGE DOESN’T JUST BUY A HOME—IT BUILDS YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE.

Beyond building equity, homeowners also get tax perks. Mortgage interest and property taxes may be eligible for deductions, which can lead to big savings. Matt points out that these government incentives make homeownership even more rewarding. More money back in your pocket? Yes, please!

MORTGAGE MYTHS—BUSTED!

A lot of people hold off on buying a home because they believe certain myths about the mortgage process. Matt hears these concerns all the time and is happy to set the record straight.

Think you need a perfect credit score? Not true! Buyers can qualify with scores as low as 580.

Worried you need a huge down payment? Many programs allow buyers to put down as little as 3%, and there are even 100% financing options available.

Recent graduate? You don’t have to wait two years—college education counts as job history, so you may be able to buy right away.

Concerned about job history? As long as you have a steady two-year work history (even in different fields), you’re in good shape.

One of the biggest mistakes Matt sees? People trying to fix their credit before even speaking to a lender. Mortgage credit reports work differently than consumer reports, so some DIY credit “fixes” can actually hurt your chances. Matt always recommends checking with a mortgage professional first to get a clear picture.

FOR FIRST-TIME BUYERS: JUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP

If you’re thinking about buying a home, don’t be afraid to get started. Pre-approval isn’t a pass-or-fail test—it’s a way to figure out where you stand and what steps you need to take. Even if you’re not ready today, having a plan in place makes all the difference. Since no one teaches mortgage financing in school, Matt believes that getting expert guidance early is key.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU REALLY AFFORD?

Homeownership isn’t just about securing a loan— it’s about making sure it fits your life and budget. Matt encourages buyers to think about:

• What monthly payment feels comfortable

• How much they can put down while keeping savings intact

• The costs of maintaining a home beyond the mortgage

Taking these things into account helps buyers find a price range that works without stretching their finances too thin.

THINKING ABOUT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY?

If you’re considering a second home or an investment property, there are great financing options available. Matt explains that second homes typically require just a 10% down payment, while investment properties can be purchased with as little as 15% down. If you’re thinking bigger—multi-unit properties require a 25% down payment—but the potential rental income could make it a great longterm move.  One of the biggest benefits of owning a rental property? Someone else is paying your mortgage for you while you make a profit and continue building wealth.

At the end of the day, investing in a home—whether it’s your first, second, or an investment property—is a solid way to build wealth and financial security. With the right guidance and a little planning, homeownership might be closer than you think.

Secure

Life is unpredictable, but your estate doesn’t have to be. A revocable trust ensures smooth asset transfer and financial security for those you love.

Your Legacy

Planning for the future might not be the most exciting thing on your to-do list. Between work, family, and the everyday hustle, it’s easy to put estate planning on the back burner. But taking a little time now to safeguard what you’ve worked for can bring lasting peace of mind -- not just for you, but for the people you love. One of the best ways to ensure everything is handled smoothly is by setting up a revocable trust.

A revocable trust isn’t just for the wealthy or those with complex assets. It’s a flexible and practical tool that helps make sure your financial affairs are managed just the way you want. Whether you’re looking to make things easier for your loved ones, keep your affairs private, or ensure a hassle-free transfer of assets, a revocable trust is a smart investment in your family’s future.

AVOIDING PROBATE: A GIFT TO YOUR LOVED ONES

One of the biggest perks of a revocable trust is that it lets your assets skip the probate process. Probate is the legal system for settling estates after someone passes away, and it can be slow, stressful, and costly. Without a trust, your estate might be tied up in court for months—or even years -- before your loved ones can access what you left behind. By placing assets in a trust, they go straight to your beneficiaries without court involvement. That means your heirs can receive what they’re entitled to quickly and without unnecessary headaches or legal fees.

KEEPING YOUR FINANCIAL AFFAIRS PRIVATE

Most people don’t realize that a will becomes public record once it goes through probate. That means anyone -- including nosy neighbors or potential scammers -- can see details about your estate. A revocable trust, on the other hand, keeps everything private. The specifics of your assets, your beneficiaries, and any special conditions you’ve set remain confidential. Not only does this protect your family’s privacy, but it also reduces the risk of disputes over your estate.

FLEXIBILITY FOR LIFE’S CHANGES

Life happens, and plans change. A revocable trust gives you the ability to adapt as your circumstances evolve. Whether you welcome a new family member, acquire new assets, or simply change your mind, a revocable trust is easy to update. Unlike some estate planning tools that are set in stone, this type of trust allows you to make adjustments whenever you need. CONTINUED

“A REVOCABLE TRUST

ISN’T JUST FOR THE WEALTHY—IT’S A SMART, FLEXIBLE TOOL THAT ENSURES YOUR FINANCIAL AFFAIRS ARE HANDLED EXACTLY THE WAY YOU WANT. WITH PRIVACY, CONTROL, AND THE ABILITY TO BYPASS PROBATE, IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FAMILY’S PEACE OF MIND AND FUTURE SECURITY.”

Plus, you remain in full control of your assets while you’re alive and well. If you place your home in a trust, for example, you can still sell it, refinance it, or rent it out just like before. The only difference is that documents will be signed as “[Your Name], Trustee” instead of your individual name.

PROTECTION IF YOU BECOME INCAPACITATED

Estate planning isn’t just about what happens after you’re gone -- it’s also about making sure things are handled smoothly if you’re unable to manage your affairs due to illness or injury. A revocable trust allows a trusted individual to step in and manage your assets without the need for court intervention. This means bills get paid, investments are overseen, and your estate stays intact -- all without unnecessary delays or complications.

A SMART INVESTMENT IN PEACE OF MIND

Setting up a revocable trust takes a little effort, but the long-term benefits are more than worth it. It’s an investment not just in your assets, but in your family’s peace of mind. Taking action now means giving your loved ones the gift of clarity, security, and a smooth transition when the time comes.

At its core, estate planning isn’t just about money -- it’s about ensuring the people who matter most are cared for. A revocable trust is a simple yet powerful way to do just that. Making this investment in your legacy today can make all the difference for those you leave behind.

Campbell High School’s CAPS Program: A Pathway to Success

If you’re a student (or a parent of one) at Campbell High School in Smyrna, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about the Campbell Advanced Placement Scholars (CAPS) Program. Launched in the 2023-2024 school year, this program provides the opportunity for ambitious students looking to take their academics to the next level while preparing for college.

The CAPS Program is designed for students who are not in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and are interested in taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes. By taking rigorous college-level courses, CAPS helps students build a strong academic resume while offering a built-in support system of likeminded peers. To qualify for the program, students need to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, take at least five AP courses and complete five AP exams, finish a Career or Fine Arts Pathway, and complete two foreign language classes. Students can apply as early as freshman year, giving them plenty of time to plan their courses and meet the requirements.

Students in the CAPS program can choose from many different AP classes that CHS provides. They can expand upon their art skills and learn a variety of mediums in AP 2D or 3D Art or AP Drawing. Those who want to gain a deeper understanding of how

HOW CHS STUDENTS ARE EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT, BUILDING COMMUNITY, AND GETTING AHEAD.

economics works on a national and global scale can enroll in AP Macroeconomics or AP Microeconomics. AP U.S. History, European History, World History, and Human Geography are all classes that will push Campbell High School students to become global citizens and excel beyond their grade level.

As the CAPS program continues to grow, several exciting additions are planned to enhance student and parent engagement. These include semester events for students and parents, a student mentorship program, parent and student advisory councils, and student advisement provided by teachers and administrators. These initiatives will further support students in their academic journeys and ensure they have the guidance needed to excel in their AP coursework.

One of the best parts of the CAPS experience is the CAPS Stole Ceremony. This special event honors seniors who have completed the program with a stole to wear at graduation. It’s not just a recognition of hard work—it’s also a chance for parents, teachers, and staff to celebrate the students’ achievements together. Last year’s ceremony was an unforgettable evening, and future CAPS students can look forward to the same kind of celebration.

Campbell High School’s dedication to academic excellence has not gone unnoticed. Georgia Superintendent Woods has recently recognized Campbell in five of eight AP categories, further solidifying the school’s reputation for academic achievement:

• AP School of Distinction

• AP Humanities School

• AP Humanities Achievement School

• AP STEM School

• AP STEM Achievement School

Supporting CAPS also means supporting local businesses and alumni. Sahad Walker, a Campbell High School graduate and owner of Instant Imprints in Smyrna, is giving back by partnering with CHS to create CAPS program swag. His journey from a student to a successful business owner highlights the impact of the school’s academic programs and the strong sense of community among alumni. His contributions ensure that CAPS students can proudly represent their achievements while fostering a connection between current students and past graduates who continue to support Campbell High School.

None of this would be possible without the support of the Campbell High School Educational Foundation. This organization is dedicated to funding academic initiatives like CAPS and the school’s College and Career Services Center. To make sure finances aren’t a barrier, the Foundation has launched an initiative to cover the cost of AP exams for deserving students. Each exam costs $100, and donations made to the CHS Educational Foundation go towards helping these hard-working students gain the academic and college credit they deserve. Whether you’re a

parent, an alum, or just someone who believes in investing in education, your contribution can make a lasting impact. To donate or learn more, visit www.campbelleducationfoundation.org.

The CAPS Program is more than just a recognition of academic achievement; it is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and ambition of Campbell High School students. It provides an avenue for students to challenge themselves, gain valuable college credit, and be part of a community that fosters success. By investing in CAPS, we are investing in a brighter future for our students, our school, and our community. The impact of this program will be felt for years to come, shaping leaders who are prepared to excel beyond high school and make meaningful contributions to the world.

SPARTANS RISING STRONG

Investing in the New Era of Campbell High School Football

For years, the Campbell High School Spartans football program has struggled to build a competitive legacy. But now, with a renewed focus, a determined coaching staff, and a cultural shift emphasizing discipline, hard work, and unity, the Spartans are setting their sights on becoming a championship-caliber team.

“The Spartans are no longer just another team—they’re a program on the rise, building a championship mindset through discipline, teamwork, and resilience.”

At the heart of this transformation is a leadership group committed to instilling a winning mindset in its players. Head Coach Jeff Phillips has brought a fresh vision to the program, prioritizing player development, strength and conditioning, and a team-first mentality. The coaching staff is dedicated not just to building talented athletes but to shaping well-rounded young men who excel both on and off the field.

One of the most significant changes in the program has been the emphasis on accountability and discipline. From offseason training to game-day execution, the Spartans have embraced a new level of commitment. Players are buying into the philosophy that championships are built in the weight room, the film room, and through relentless daily effort. This dedication is already yielding results, with noticeable improvements in performance, teamwork, and resilience.

Over the past two years, the program has made remarkable progress, reaching the playoffs in 2023 and securing its first winning season since 2007

in 2024. Additionally, 13 athletes signed letters of intent to play college football next year—the most of any school in Cobb County.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS FROM THE 2024 SEASON

• School Rushing Record: 576 yards in a single game

• #3 Ranked Defense in program history

• Largest Defensive Scoring Improvement in program history

• #6 Ranked Offense in program history

• Special Teams Led the Region in blocked kicks

• Biggest Culture Change in Cobb County (improved ranking from 17th to 6th, as voted by Cobb County)

• 43 Colleges visited Campbell High School to recruit players

• Jr. Spartan Program Success:6th grade team won the B Division Championship7th grade team hosted a playoff game8th grade team increased total wins for the season

• 2024 Fox 5 Sports High 5 Team of the Week

Beyond the field, the Spartans are making waves in the community, gaining support from fans, alumni, and local businesses. Excitement for the program is growing, and the team is feeding off that energy. With young talent emerging and a competitive fire burning, the future of Campbell High football has never looked brighter.

THE NEED FOR FACILITY UPGRADES

To maintain this momentum, retain top talent within the community, and compete with other programs in the area, facility upgrades are a must— something that has been significantly neglected over the past 30 years.

The immediate priority is improving the fieldhouse and locker room facilities. Modern, secure lockers are essential for athletes to store their equipment safely and to foster a sense of pride and unity within the team. However, many may not realize that Cobb County does not fund athletic programs within its schools, meaning Campbell’s football program relies heavily on fundraising and sponsorships.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are seeking to raise $75,000 for this muchneeded project and are reaching out to community members, local businesses, and alumni for support. Your generous contribution will directly impact our student-athletes by providing them with the resources they need to succeed both on and off the field.

Donations can be made via GoFundMe and are tax-deductible. Donors who contribute $500 or more will be prominently recognized through various channels, including:

• On-field banners

• Visibility on the team’s official website and social media platforms

Beyond banking, VyStar strengthens the communities it serves through charitable giving, partnerships, and volunteerism. In 2024 alone, VyStar contributed over $7.2 million to more than 400 nonprofit organizations, with employees dedicating 40,000 hours to volunteer work. SUPPORTING FINANCIAL FITNESS

VyStar recognizes that financial stability is essential for a thriving community. To encourage healthy savings habits, it recently launched the VyStar Savings Challenge, helping individuals save $1,000 by the end of April. The goal is to assist 1,000 people in collectively saving $1 million, reinforcing the importance of financial preparedness and long-term stability.

“We launched this challenge because many American households struggle with unexpected expenses,” says Janean Armstrong, VyStar SVP/Georgia Market President. “At VyStar, we are committed to improving financial fitness in our communities and empowering people to take control of their finances.”

GREENS INVEST IN YOUR

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.

Spring into Wealth: Why Real Estate is the Smartest Investment

Spring is the season of growth—why not grow your wealth with real estate? Unlike stocks, real estate offers long-term appreciation, meaning your investment increases in value over time. Rental properties also provide passive income, allowing you to earn while your asset appreciates. Plus, real estate is one of the best ways to hedge against inflation—while prices rise, so do home values and rental income, keeping your investment strong.

Beyond financial growth, real estate offers valuable tax advantages, including deductions, depreciation benefits, and other perks that help maximize your returns. Whether you’re buying your first home, investing in rental properties, or expanding your portfolio, now is the time to take action. Don’t let another season pass you by—let’s find the right property to build your future!

From Pennington's Pen:

I’m a passe texter. My daughter Sadie recently explained to me that the right way to text rarely involves the use of a period. I find this mystifying. Apparently, the use of punctuation to recognize subject verb agreement is a bit heavy handed. When I read Joshua 1:2, I have to admit that there are times that she is correct. Other translations break up the verse into two sentences, dividing the fact of Moses’ demise from Joshua’s commission to lead the people of God into the promised land. This is an interpretative decision, becasue the original language did not possess punctuation. For the record, I do think that the King James Version, honoring Sadie’s concern for heavy-handedness, gets it right!

This observation leads Robert Smith to advocate for the theology of the semicolon. A semicolon combines a period and a comma. The period cannot be abandoned, for it reminds the reader of the importance of all that has come before it, while the comma catapults us into the future. This isn’t the only place you find an important semicolon in your Bible. Joseph uses it when confronting his selfish brothers: You planned evil against me; but God planned it for good (Genesis 50:20). “Weeping may stay overnight;” sang David, “joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 34:19).

“Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them…”

- Joshua 1:2

My favorite example is found in the New Testament, in Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death; the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Semicolon theology isn’t just interesting, it means everything. At Easter, we look to it as much as ever before. Because of the separation from God caused by our sin, life, like the end of the sentence, comes to a place of total and complete termination. But thankfully, as we look to the empty tomb knowing that God raised Jesus from the dead, termination gives way to continuation, for through his resurrection we are raised to new life too! All this comes about as we transfer all of our hope and trust and place it in the termination and continuation of Jesus! Join us for worship this coming Easter, April 20, as we worship our risen King!

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.

EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.

This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.

CREATE SURPRISES

Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.

CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS

Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.

EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE

In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.

KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED

Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.

Scams That Prey On New Businesses

As a new business owner, you are immediately a target for a vast array of scammers. The y know that you are probably unfamiliar with what’s required and what’s nonsense. Your attention is spread thin trying to juggle your new business, and often your existing job, so you are vulnerable to scams. The US Mail is a preferred method of delivery for these scams.

At TRUE Space, we process a lot of mail for our virtual office clients and see firsthand the tricks and devious practices of these scammers. We are able to protect our clients by intercepting and discarding much of the scam mail. Below are some of the most common mail scams.

Printed Book listings: Bills will arrive telling you that you must pay to register your business name in the “official book” for your industry. Typically, they require payment of a few hundred dollars for a listing in a printed book…that no one will ever see except you if you order a copy for an additional fee.

Online 411 Phone Number Registry: No value. As a society, we really don’t use phone directories anymore since the internet essentially provides a free directory.

Annual Compliance Notices: In the first quarter of every year, we see a surge in scams trying to trick business owners into paying for “required” annual compliance filings that don’t exist.

Trademarks and Patents: Very official bills arrive for trademark review, evaluation, and compliance services, even though you may not have registered a trademark. If you have a trademark or patent filing, beware scam “required” compliance filings from official looking “legal” services whom you have no relationship.

Official Looking Invoices: Expect to receive all kinds of fake invoices for things and services you never purchased. Many falsely appear to be from official government agencies. One of my favorite scam bills was a company pretending to be a government internet oversight organization who sent us an invoice for our annual “internet presence fee” for having our website on the internet.

Be Alert: As a business owner, you need to be highly skeptical of any invoice you get, or any mail that says “mandatory compliance”. The scam artists know you probably have a stash of funds to launch your business. They want to steal what they can before you become smart enough to know better.

Advice: Pay your bills yourself. Don’t hand the task of paying your bills to an employee or spouse who isn’t actively involved in the day-to-day operations, as they may not know if you actually signed up for the scammer services or not. Control your money, control your business.

TRUE Space virtual office clients who request that we discard junk mail enjoy protection from many of these scammers, as we easily recognize the scam mail and discard it as junk mail.
