Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy. While our family of six only has one speed—go—we try to remind ourselves that not every week needs to be packed with constant kids' activities and trips. Rather, it’s OK to maintain a slower pace and bask in the simple moments of enjoying those around us. For Jake, the art of kicking back and relaxing comes naturally. For me, it takes mental reminders and intentional choices to be able to slow down. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, give yourself permission to take some time to enjoy some of the simple pleasures. Host a backyard barbecue with friends, make s’mores by a fire pit, spend a day on the water, eat ice-cream on a hot summer day or simply take in an evening walk and enjoy the night sky with someone you love. In honor of the Fourth of July, our team at City Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. We hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things Central New Jersey has to offer during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you. Also, don’t forget to snap some photos of your summer fun and tag us on Instagram (@bridgewater_somerset_hills). You just may find your picture in next month’s City Scene.

At press time, May 25th:

Lack of available homes for sale has kept our market area brisk. Pricing a home correctly continues to attract multiple offers. Having your home turnkey, or at least well maintained, with neutral colors. gives it a competitive edge. Location as a criteria is once again an integral part of the selection process. Tranquil and park-like outdoor spaces remain a strong selling point. The bottom line: as more homes become available, buyers are becoming more discerning. I'm here to help you every step of the way! Up, Up and Away! Join the Fun as Hot Air Balloons Make a Mass Ascent Into the Central Jersey Skies

ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA MENSCH AND DONNA GIOIA VOLPE

There is something spiritual about watching a hot air balloon mass ascension, hearing the steady whoosh of the fire licking up from the baskets as the balloons slowly, almost meditatively, lift off the ground, soaring higher, higher, higher, until they drift toward the horizon and become mere specks in the sky. If you have never witnessed the magic of over 100 balloons rising simultaneously, mark your calendar for the 39th annual New Jersey Lottery Festival of Ballooning, the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America, which will be held this year on July 29 to 31. Set to the soundtrack of songs like “Up, Up And Away” by The 5th Dimension—“Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon?”—the

balloons begin making their ascent around 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. each day, weather-permitting, from Solberg Airport in Readington. From there, they meander the skies over the countryside until they touch down who-knows-where. The photos are definitely Instagramworthy—and even more so if you catch a ride in one of these beauties. The festival is known for bringing in the newest and best “special shaped” balloons from around the world. Often whimsical and the size of New York City skyscrapers, they have run the gamut from a brilliant yellow sun to a 105-foottall sequined Elvis to an 86-foot-tall replica of Darth Vader’s head to a menagerie of animals and the world’s largest free-flying American flag.

Tracy Leaver pilots “Jurassic Journey”

24

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | E NTE RTAI NME NT

A popular balloon is the dinosaur-themed “Jurassic Journey,” piloted by Tracy Leaver of Pittstown. Leaver has been involved in ballooning since the early 1980s, when she started out on a balloon chase crew—the group of people who help launch the balloon for flight and then chase it until it lands, well, wherever it lands. “People often start out on the crew to learn and decide if they want to proceed in the sport or just stay as part of the crew, which is wonderful as well,” says Leaver, who became a private pilot and then a commercial pilot in 1998, but still enjoys working on fellow pilots’ crews. Since hot air ballooning is a Federal Aviation Administration–regulated sport, Leaver went through an extensive training for her commercial license, which included a minimum of 36 hours of flight time with an instructor, written tests and flight-check tests. Leaver has participated at the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning for about 20 years, 15 of those as a pilot. “Balloon pilots love to share the sport with everyone they know. There’s something special about taking off in one of the oldest forms of flight and being able to give that experience to the people in the basket with you,” she says. “So, it’s amazing when we can all get together in a large group, like at a festival.” What Leaver loves most about the sport is the pure adventure of piloting a balloon. “Every flight is different—even if you’ve been flying for 25 years. You can have an anticipation of what a flight will be like and then have it end up completely different than your expectation,” she says. “We may think we’re going to land in one spot, but since we can’t steer the

balloon, we may end up going in a completely different direction.” The pilots pay careful attention to the weather. Even on clear, calm-looking days, a wind shear hundreds of feet up might make flying prohibitive. “Safety always comes first,” says Leaver, who monitors a number of sources that help her determine if a day is flyable. Rising into the sky is pure magic, no matter how many times you’ve gone up. “I had the most wonderful flight last year at a festival in Pennsylvania,” she says. “I took up a mom, dad and two kids. We were flying toward a large pond with a fountain in the middle. I thought it would be fun to come down low over it. The kids were delighted—and we adults felt like kids again. We could have stayed there all day, enjoying the mist on the pond and the beautiful sun shining on us. My chase crew was taking photos like crazy and giggling and we were laughing. It was a moment of pure joy.” Besides meeting pilots like Leaver, festival-goers can enjoy live music, a nighttime hot air balloon glow, fireworks display, family entertainment and attractions, the Running with the Balloons 5K, children’s amusement rides, interactive exhibits and hundreds of vendors. Those who are curious but not quite ready to sail away in a balloon can take a ride in a hot air balloon that is securely tethered to the ground.

BEYOND THE BALLOONS In addition to the balloons, the festival books an exciting roster of performing artists. This year’s lineup includes: Laurie Berkner—recognized as the “queen of kids’ music” by People magazine—headlines the children’s concert on Friday. Berkner has released 14 best-selling albums, was the first recording artist to perform in music videos on Nick Jr. and has authored a number of picture books based on her songs. Alternative rock heavy-hitter Collective Soul—whose breakthrough song “Shine” is ranked in the top 100 songs of the ’90s— plays on Friday and is followed by a worldclass Fireworks Extravaganza. Todd Rundgren, a 2021 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, headlines the festival’s Main Stage on Saturday. Classic rock legend Kansas—featuring Dunellen’s own Tom Brislin, who joined the band in 2019 as the group’s keyboardist and backing vocalist—closes out the festival on Sunday. Throughout the festival, keep your eyes to the skies for David “The Bullet” Smith, who holds five Guinness World Records for the highest cannonball shot and the farthest cannonball shot. Smith has blasted over incredible obstacles, such as Ferris wheels, concert stages and even part of the Grand Canyon. See the full schedule and buy tickets at balloonfestival.com.

Mane Event The Essex Horse Trials Bring World-Champion Riders to the Somerset Hills 28

M UST SE E | EN TERTA INME NT

On July 1–2 you have a unique opportunity to watch world-class riders and their horses compete. The Essex Horse Trials—a United States Equestrian Team (USET) and US Equestrian sanctioned competition—began in the 1960s as a competition for young riders. It has since grown to become a major international event where the sport’s top contenders compete for U.S. Team positions at both the Olympic Games and World Championships. Spectators can watch the sport’s three disciplines: Dressage and Show Jumping, held at the USET Foundation in Gladstone, and CrossCountry at Moorland Farm in Far Hills. Collectively, the disciplines—essentially an “equestrian triathlon”—are called “Eventing.” The scores for each of the three phases are combined to determine the final placings. Dressage, the first phase, tests a horse’s obedience to the rider. In Show Jumping, horses must jump quickly and carefully over fences. Trust between horse and rider is crucial in Cross-Country, which requires horses to jump solid obstacles that they have never seen, often at speed. On July 2, spectators also can view a curated collection of classic and exotic automobiles at the Peter Chesson Memorial Car Show. Proceeds benefit Greater Newark LifeCamp, which organizes an enriching day camp for 300 Newark-area youth for six weeks in July and August. Find out more at essexhorsetrials.org.

JERALYN LAWRENCE, THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE NEW JERSEY STATE BAR ASSOCIATION, DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUSTING YOUR INSTINCTS She lives in Watchung with her husband, John Benvenuto, owner of a car-transporting business, and her three children—16-year-old Abigail and 11-year-old twins Amelia and Lawson. She also has four stepchildren: Kyle, Carson, Karly and Leah. When she’s not in the office or working—which is rare—you might see her out walking along Watchung Lake, spending time with lifelong friends and coaching her children’s sports team or cheering them on.

Q. YOU WORKED FOR A LARGE LAW FIRM BEFORE SETTING UP YOUR OWN SHOP IN 2019. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A LAWYER? A: As early as sixth grade, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer and thought I would be a prosecutor. My father is a retired police detective, and I used to discuss law with him. I relied on him a lot in law school.

Q: WHAT WAS LAW SCHOOL LIKE?

Lawrence with husband John Benvenuto and children Abigail Lawrence and Amelia and Lawson Benvenuto, and dog, Libby

Jeralyn Lawrence, the new president of the New Jersey State Bar Association and president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, practices family law at her eponymous firm, which has offices in Red Bank and Watchung. A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, the Wayne native is on the board of trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset Health Care Foundation and is a frequent supporter of various events in the community.

A: Law school was hard. I had a hard time getting in because my LSAT scores weren’t great. But I got in and graduated second in my class because of my work ethic, so my message is that you have to outwork people to succeed.

Q: WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START YOUR OWN LAW FIRM? A: Although I held several key positions and was the top biller at the large firm I was working for, I felt overlooked and not taken seriously. I wanted to take charge of my and my team’s security and financial future. My entire team came with me and started Lawrence Law.

Q: WERE YOU AT ALL APPREHENSIVE ABOUT GOING OUT ON YOUR OWN? A: It was terrifying because I had been in a big firm my entire career, and they had departments for everything from mail to technology. Now, my team and I had to be all the departments ourselves.

Q: YOU ALSO MADE THIS TRANSITION DURING THE PANDEMIC, WHICH WAS NOT A GOOD TIME TO START A NEW VENTURE.

Q: YOU’VE BEEN QUITE SUCCESSFUL IN A RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET?

A: Yes, this was right before the lockdowns. I had invested heavily in technology, so we were able to transition from day one. The good news is that the courts never closed. And we were presented with new issues in family law: The COVID mandates created all kinds of controversies among families, and we were ready and available.

A: In addition to hard work, my core philosophy is that people don’t remember what you said or what you did. They remember how you made them feel. Be a nice person and do the right thing.

Q: WORKING FOR YOURSELF ALSO MEANS EVEN MORE HOURS IN THE OFFICE. A: Yes, I work seven days a week, about 12 hours Monday through Friday and at least three hours each weekend day. And with my bar presidency, I will be working even more hours. But I work around my children’s schedules as they always come first. I love Zoom and to work remotely.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON THE RARE OCCASIONS WHEN YOU DO HAVE FREE TIME? A: I love to coach my children’s sports teams and sit on the beach. We have a house in Belmar on the Jersey Shore where all of us—my parents, my four siblings and their families, my children, my other relatives—gather. I watch the kids make sand castles and catch crabs on the jetty. I know a lot of people read on the beach, but if I open anything other than a law book, it’s People magazine.

Aidan O’Gwen is a seasoned sailor. He’s been competing pretty much his entire life: He was 7 when he entered his first regatta. Gee, that was such a long time ago that he says he can’t even remember how he finished in the competition. He’s 11 now. But it doesn’t really matter because O’Gwen, who has a big smile and horn-rimmed glasses the color of his dark hair, has devoted himself to the sport since then, practicing six hours a day on the weekends during the fall and spring and every day, all day long, during the summertime. “I’m getting better and better,” he says. “I’ve been coming in first in every major event. It’s a big accomplishment.” O’Gwen’s latest victories include the USODA Midwinter Championship in New Orleans, the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami, the USODA Atlantic Coast Championship in Toms River and the Bahamas Optimist Nationals in Nassau, Bahamas. In each, he came in first in his age category. O’Gwen sails in his very own Optimist, affectionally known in the sport as the “opti.” It’s the size of a bathtub and is designed for sailors who are 15 and younger.

40

O FF R OA D | SPORTS + R E CRE ATI ON

Although he’s sometimes sailing an hour from shore (coaches are nearby), O’Gwen says he’s never scared; he’s been swimming since he was 3. When O’Gwen’s not at the Toms River Yacht Club practicing, he’s watching sailing videos, developing strategies with his coaches and working on his core: He does sit-ups, push-ups and reps on a hiking bench in the basement of the Basking Ridge home he shares with his parents, Joy and Chris, three older brothers and a black lab aptly named “Sailor.” “It’s fun to go sailing,” says O’Gwen, who is the only student at St. James School in Basking Ridge involved in the sport. “You don’t have to be competitive to have fun.” Yeah, but it’s also really fun to win. “I like winning,” he says unapologetically. “I think everybody likes winning.” O’Gwen, who also plays ice hockey and guitar (he’s learning to pluck out the national anthem), will continue to devote himself to the sport. “I definitely want to sail in college,” he says, “and I will definitely sail my whole life. I’m just not sure what kind of sailing I will do after college.” Of course, he could change course. He is, after all, only 11.

“I’m getting better and better. I’ve been coming in first in every major event. It’s a big accomplishment.” - Aidan O’Gwen

JUST PEACH Y!

I am all about fruity cocktails. From Mimosas to Rossinis, I never met a bubbly and fruity cocktail I didn’t like. This Bellini recipe is perfect because it uses your favorite Prosecco with fresh peaches. Bellinis are an Italian cocktail that contains two main ingredients: Prosecco and peach purée. It’s a light, fruity and refreshing fizzy beverage that pairs well with brunches and Italian menus.

PEACH BELLINI ingredients: • • • •

3 c (1 bottle) of Prosecco, chilled 3 c fresh or frozen sliced peaches 1/2 c peach juice 1 peach, sliced or diced (garnish)

directions: 1. Combine the Prosecco, peaches and juice to a blender. 2. Cover and blend on high until smooth for roughly 1–2 minutes. 3. Pour into glasses. 4. Garnish with fresh sliced or diced peaches. *For a non-alcoholic version, substitute with sparkling cider or seltzer. If you use fresh instead of frozen peaches, add 3 ice cubes to the blender. G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

Thinking of moving? think young! In 2020, adaptability strengthened our success. In 2021, resiliency doubled our sales volume at new price points! In 2022, sales velocity produces unsurpassed results!

Today's market requires a lot more pre-planning, followed by sales velocity into the market. That first weekend is critical and I'm here to help you every step of the way, on your timetable. It starts with a complimentary prepping of your home to make it irresistible, and then, using digital and print media, attracting the widest audience. In fact, we have proprietary tools to reach buyers right where they live, and continue to "retarget" them wherever they leave their digital footprint. Visitors have a scheduled appointment and private showing with their agent. You get one chance at a first impression including just three seconds on Zillow and social media, before the average buyer swipes to the next home. You can see from the illustration above, our view and save rate! Our E-books garner an additional 600+ views and downloads, and some of our Instagram Reels have received over 7,000 plays. When offers come in, we provide a comprehensive summary and checklist and advise buyer agents of your preferences, such as ideal close date. We arrange required town inspections (fire and open permits), and engage a cadre of licensed vendors to carefully analyze inspection requests for validity. I even supply the required fire extinguishers. We attend the appraisal with realistic comps. Please call for an in-depth consult!
