Together in the Season of Joy: A Holiday Reflection

As the holidays arrive, I find myself, like so many of us, drawn back to the magic of my own childhood celebrations. There’s something about this season—the scents of cinnamon and pine, the sparkle of lights, the joyful sounds—that makes us want to recreate the wonder we felt as kids. In my own family, the tradition of bundling up in those matching, new, soft holiday pajamas for the annual neighborhood light tour and gathering around for a cozy holiday movie has become a staple, bringing back a flood of cherished memories and creating new ones each year.

Here in our vibrant community, the holiday spirit truly shines. The festive decorations around our neighborhoods and the lively holiday events bring us all together in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh. There’s something special about how our communities celebrate, making it easy to feel connected to both the season and to each other.

In this issue, we’re embracing that sense of togetherness by spotlighting the holiday magic found here in the Sonoran Foothills. You’ll find a thoughtfully written article on the art of giving. We’ve also gathered details on local holiday events and opportunities to give back to those who may be struggling during this season.

While the holidays are joyful for many, they can also be a time of loneliness for others. Let’s remember to reach out to those who may be alone or grieving, offering a gesture of kindness, grace, and empathy. My hope for each of you this season is that you feel surrounded by peace and warmth, and that together we keep the spirit of community alive.

Happy Holidays!

BRAINWAVES

GENEROSITY

GIVING, GRATITUDE, AND THE BRAIN

'Tis the season of giving and holding hands around elegantly set tables, sharing sentiments of gratitude. Expressing thanks for family, friends, and thoughtful gifts is much more powerful than we are led to believe. Giving stimulates the reward centers of the brain, causing feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. Gratitude is not only an emotion but also a virtue, attitude, and coping mechanism. The beauty of gratitude lies in its presence during both subjectively good times and bad. Even during the most complicated and heavy moments, gratitude can be chosen.

The habits of gratitude and giving can be utilized to stimulate positive shifts in our brains and bodies, having instant and long-term impacts on health and well-being. When practicing or experiencing gratitude and giving, neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and norepinephrine are released. These "happy hormones" play a fundamental role in regulating our emotions, nervous system, and stress response.

Studies examining the effects of consistent gratitude practice show fascinating impacts on physical, mental, and emotional health. In one study, a gratitude intervention group was tasked with writing daily gratitude lists for fourteen days, while two control groups were instructed to write a daily list of negative or neutral events. Outcomes showed that the gratitude intervention increased subjective happiness, positive demeanor, life satisfaction, and reduced negative mood, depression, pain, while also improving immunity, heart health, and brain function. Giving is a mechanism for humans to value actions that don’t directly benefit themselves but rather another person. This maintains basic human needs such as social relationships, love, safety, and belonging. In addition, a single act of giving can boost oxytocin levels for three to four minutes.

The intention of gratitude is not to pretend everything is perfect but to develop a thankful spirit for what and who is already present, the experiences we’ve had, and the memories we cherish. When gratitude is expressed, it interrupts negative thought patterns, helping to avoid pessimism, stress, anxiety, unhappiness, complaints, pain, loneliness, and fear.

“The beauty of gratitude lies in its presence during both subjectively good times and bad.”

Giving is not exclusive to purchasing the best gift or making charitable donations. True giving can be an expression of gratitude, a small act of service, volunteering, or making a positive impact on the world.

There are several ways to incorporate gratitude and giving into everyday life. Gratitude lists are a widely popular technique. Simple things such as expressing appreciation to someone in a text or smiling when you think of a treasured memory can all increase gratitude. While contemplating where gratitude is present, look for it in the little things: the smell and taste of morning coffee, no traffic on the commute to work, the sights of nature, and even the breaths we take are all favorable examples.

Giving can be a two-way street, meaning we give to others but also back to ourselves. We give so much to others already; focusing on self-care, nourishment, rest, boundaries, and hobbies for ourselves produces the same physical and mental well-being effects as giving to others, including the added bonus of improved self-esteem. When in the midst of stressful seasons and moments of doubt or joy, gratitude is the emotion that will always fit, and giving will never go out of style.

EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY ONE PURSE AT A TIME

“It’s amazing what a small group of determined women can achieve.”

The Anthem Giving Circle (AGC) is a remarkable collective of women dedicated to making a tangible difference in their local community. Through their mission of pooling time, talents, and resources, AGC focuses on supporting families in need, providing essential assistance like rent, utility bills, and medical expenses. Their annual fundraising event, "Purses for a Purpose," plays a pivotal role in this mission, helping to generate vital funds that directly impact the lives of many.

AGC's outreach extends beyond financial support; they contribute over $5,000 in gift cards to local elementary and secondary schools each year, ensuring that students and staff have the resources they need.

Since the last Purses for a Purpose event, AGC has distributed more than $46,000 to assist over 75 families, benefiting a total of 185 individuals. "It's amazing what a small group of determined women can achieve," they emphasize, showcasing the collective power of their members.

While quantifying impact can be challenging due to the confidential nature of their grants, the numbers tell a compelling story. AGC has provided rental assistance, utility bill payments, and even aid for car and home repairs, demonstrating a robust approach to community support. Their contributions to local food banks amount to over $3,000, alongside countless volunteer hours dedicated to various charitable events.

Engagement with the community is at the heart of AGC’s philosophy. Members actively participate in a variety of local events, from the Health and Hope Fair to school supply drives, emphasizing the belief that "it takes a village" to create meaningful change. They also strive to raise awareness about their work

through local media, and they seek out potential new members to expand their impact.

Launched in 2010, Purses for a Purpose started with a handful of purses and a small group of women. Today, it has evolved into a major fundraiser that draws over 250 attendees, featuring 160 designer purses and raising an impressive $51,000 last year alone. This event has become a community staple, eagerly anticipated by many.

AGC operates without rigid daily responsibilities; instead, members volunteer according to their interests and availability. Some lead the planning for Purses for a Purpose, while others assist with community needs, such as providing food for local pantries.

As AGC continues to grow, so do the challenges they face. The needs within the community are significant, and the organization, currently comprising around 30 women, is striving to expand to its by-laws limit of 40 members. This growth is crucial to ensuring they can meet the increasing demands for support.

The primary funding source for AGC remains Purses for a Purpose, supplemented by contributions from the Charity Classic hosted by Anthem Country Club and Rotary. Strong partnerships with organizations like the Foothills Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul enhance their outreach efforts, making a broader impact in the community.

The Anthem Giving Circle exemplifies how collective action can lead to transformative change. Through their unwavering dedication and active community involvement, AGC not only supports those in need but also inspires others to join in their mission. As they continue to grow and adapt, AGC remains a shining example of empowerment and compassion in action.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

Exploring History and Christmas

Just an hour and a half northwest of Phoenix, the Verde Canyon Railroad (VCRR) offers a unique glimpse into both the rich history of the region and the magic of seasonal celebrations. The train is powered by two FP7 locomotives, two of only ten remaining in North America. Built in 1953 for the Alaska Railroad, these classic engines first graced the VCRR

tracks on March 8, 1997, and were refurbished in 2019 with a striking bald eagle motif.

The story of VCRR begins in Jerome, a town precariously perched on a mountainside. Once home to over 15,000 residents drawn by the promise of wealth from copper mining, Jerome's mines have long since closed. However, the legacy of the railroads that once connected these communities continues to thrive. The first tracks into Jerome were laid by the United Verde & Pacific Railway in 1895, a narrow-gauge line renowned for its numerous curves. This innovative transportation method was vital to the region, transforming the economic landscape.

As mining operations shifted from underground to open-pit techniques, the town of Clarkdale emerged, named after William Andrews Clark, a key figure in the area’s development. In 1911, Clark financed the construction of the Verde Valley

Railway, a remarkable feat that included a lengthy tunnel and a significant trestle bridge. Completed in 1912, this railway continued to serve the area long after the mines had closed, demonstrating the resilience of the rail industry.

Dave Durbano, a pivotal figure in the railroad's modern history, reflects on his journey to VCRR. Growing up in Roy, Utah, Durbano's passion for railroads blossomed as he helped his family on their farm near the tracks. His career began in sales, but it was his entrepreneurial spirit that led him to establish Western Railroad Builders, which specialized in constructing and maintaining railway lines. In 1988, Durbano purchased the Drake to Clarkdale line, recognizing its potential beyond freight transport.

The first excursion train of the Verde Canyon Railroad departed from Clarkdale on November 23, 1990, carrying passengers eager to experience the

breathtaking views of the canyon. Today, VCRR attracts around 100,000 visitors each year, eager to witness the majestic landscape and enjoy the elegance of train travel.

As the seasons change, the Verde Canyon transforms into a winter wonderland. Starting November 29, the train will host its annual "Magical Christmas Journey™." This enchanting experience invites families to join Santa Claus, lively elves, and Arizona wildlife on a cozy train ride to the North Pole. The journey features beautifully decorated stations and immersive storytelling, with stops at whimsical locations like Santa’s Workshop.

Throughout December, while the Magical Christmas Journey™ takes center stage, standard excursions continue to offer glimpses into the breathtaking wilderness. The New Year’s Eve celebration aboard the train features festive activities and a chance to reflect on the past year.

Traveling along a historic route completed in 1912, Verde Canyon Railroad serves as a bridge between past and present. It invites passengers to explore the stunning geology of the canyon and the wildlife that calls it home, including the chance to spot majestic bald eagles.

The Verde Canyon Railroad is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a journey through time. With nearly three million visitors since its inception, it continues to provide a unique connection to Arizona's history and natural beauty. Whether you’re riding the rails during the holiday season or embarking on a scenic excursion, VCRR offers an unforgettable experience that celebrates both the landscape and the spirit of adventure.

WINTER’S REVEL

ARTICLE BY NICOLETTE MARTIN

Following closely on the coattails of autumnal and winter holidays, the celebration of the new year can often be overlooked due to an understandable desire to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the season. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-ofthe-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

the drinks

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

the decor

There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

the snacks

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com , sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation.

WHAT YOU NEED

• Cheese board or serving plate

• Assortment of cheeses

We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!

the traditions

No matter where you are in the world when the clock strikes midnight, ring in the new year internationally by taking part in one of these worldly traditions.

+ SPAIN Spend Nochevieja (“old night”) at home watching the countdown on TV—you can party later! Are you in need of some luck for the upcoming year? Wearing red underwear for the night may give you some.

+ MEXICO Be sure to have lots of grapes on hand. Demonstrated by Spaniards as well, this tradition involves eating 12 grapes with every strike of the clock, symbolizing good luck for every month of the new year.

+ DENMARK Destroy your frustrations and start the year fresh by smashing unwanted glassware. Danish tradition calls for smashing plates on the doors of friends and loved ones around midnight, but we think you should probably save that part for when you’re actually in Denmark.

+ SCOTLAND Although its singing has become pretty standard worldwide, “Auld Lang Syne” originated in Scotland in 1788 as a poem by Robert Burns. Go ahead and make a cheat sheet for all your friends—we won’t judge.

In the North Valley, Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center stands as a source of hope for families facing food insecurity. Spanning a 200-square-mile area that includes Anthem, Black Canyon City, Cave Creek, and parts of North Phoenix and Scottsdale, the organiza-

tion is dedicated to combating hunger with compassion and respect. Their mission goes beyond simply providing food; it aims to break the cycle of food insecurity by offering resources that address underlying challenges.

Since 2020, Foothills Food Bank has led the way in developing innovative solutions to assist communities grappling with food shortages and transportation challenges. By launching mobile markets at churches and health centers and introducing drive-through markets, they have brought essential resources directly to those in need. Their commitment to youth is evident in the establishment of micro-pantries in elementary schools and libraries, while seniors benefit from dedicated pantry services at senior centers.

The organization also emphasizes holistic support. “When someone needs food, they often face other problems too,” says a representative. In addition to food assistance, Foothills Food Bank provides job search help, mental health services,

by community engagement, volunteer involvement, and fundraising successes. Foothills’ community initiatives include the annual ‘Adopt A Family’ holiday gift program and outreach events like the upcoming Shreda-Thon. By partnering with local businesses, schools, and faith groups, they raise awareness about food insecurity and encourage active participation from community members.

Volunteers are the backbone of the organization. Daily responsibilities range from picking up groceries from food rescue partners to sorting donations, assisting clients, and supporting various administrative tasks. In 2023 alone, over 324 active volunteers contributed more than 40,000 hours of service. Their dedication is celebrated through recognition programs like the 200+ Club, which honors those who donate 200 hours or more in a year.

Yet, challenges loom large. Meeting the increasing demand for food and resources, securing consistent funding, and raising awareness about their

services remain key hurdles. The new campus aims to address these issues by enhancing food storage capacity and expanding client services.

Located on a three-acre parcel on Carefree Highway, the new facility will not only house a larger food pantry but also serve as a center for education and empowerment. Plans include offering programs on financial coaching and nutritional cooking, and addressing the root causes of food insecurity. This initiative has garnered support from local officials, including Robert Morris, the Mayor of Cave Creek, who emphasizes the mutual benefits of this partnership for both the food bank and the town.

Foothills Food Bank’s ongoing capital campaign, Faces of Hope, is open for donations, providing opportunities for naming tributes and memorials. The organization invites community members to get involved, whether through donations or volunteering, particularly once the new campus is operational.

As Foothills Food Bank forges ahead, it is not merely expanding its physical footprint; it is creating a nurturing environment for growth, learning, and self-sufficiency. In a world where hunger persists, they are committed to ensuring that no one faces these challenges alone.
