e're a city perfectly positioned for travel. A speedy drive to the west or east drops you at the foot of mountains or the shores of the ocean. Southern hotspots like Charleston, Savannah and Atlanta are close enough for weekend getaways. Incredible Carolinian beaches and their auxiliary charming towns dot the coastline, awaiting our summer vacations under crystalline skies (see our Feature, page 22). Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with its renowned rocking chairs and easy navigation, makes the entire world—from Southeast Asia (page 20) to Puerto Rico (page 16)—a viable destination. Ironically, part of what makes our city so great is how easy it is to leave. But there's something that always brings us back. In a word, love. A love for our town and our people. It's love, in fact, that inspired the other side of this issue: weddings. The season is upon us, and we've rounded up some of the best venues and cakes around to help make all those decisions a little bit easier. Travel broadly. Explore. Go on an adventure. We'll be here when you return.

His Cuatro A LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER TRAVELS TO PUERTO RICO TO DOCUMENT HER GRANDFATHER’S MUSICAL LEGACY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ANITRA THOMPSON

I

remember visiting my grandparents as a young girl. My grandmother’s sauté of pepper, onion, garlic, green olive and tomato sea-

soned with sazón wafting through the morning air, waking my sister and I from our slumber. My grandfather’s practiced, intricate jíbaro riffs acted as an alternative alarm clock. Hailing from the mountain regions, jíbaro style is the authentic folk music of Puerto Rico, and it was my grandfather’s connection to his home. The lyrics are a form of poetry to remind natives of the homeland they promise never to forget. His playing was special—a gift. At three years old, he made his first guitar using hair from a horse’s tail and taught himself how to play. His perfect pitch allowed him to mimic any tune he heard. He plucked the strings of his Cuatro, Puerto Rico’s guitar-like national instrument, like they were the strings of his own heart. My grandfather, Felipe Neri Orta, was the ultimate example of talent, creativity and focus. He was a master Cuatro player, famous in both Puerto Rico and New York for his contributions to jíbaro music. The tone of his Cuatro and voice were so distinctive that he could easily be identified amongst a talented crowd of musicians. In his time, he recorded dozens of albums.

Now almost 100 years old, his Cuatro is the rarest of its kind: hand-carved from one solid piece of wood. Its slightly concave back makes a bell-like sound which complimented my grandfather’s voice. When my grandfather passed in 2012, even more than missing him, I grieved the loss of his Cuatro. We sent the instrument home to Puerto Rico in the arms of a bandmate, but I felt the Cuatro’s vulnerability. The possibility of never seeing or hearing his instrument played again formed a constricting knot in my throat. Five years later, my grandfather’s memory returned when I needed it most. My career in corporate America seemed tenuous, tied with thin strings that were already being cut by restructuring in Charlotte. I wanted to focus on my creative outlet, photography, but felt tied by my own strings of fear. It was then that I saw an old video of my grandfather playing with his band on a Facebook post, and commented, “That’s my Grandpa! I needed to hear him play today, thank you for sharing!” Moments later Ramón Vázquez Lamboy commented, “Hi Anitra. I have your grandpa’s Cuatro." SHARING NERI’S LEGACY

My grandfather was happy to share everything that he knew with the up-and-coming musician, Ramón Vázquez Lamboy, through a lengthy 30-year friendship and mentorship. Through his humble introduction, I learned that Ramón is part of a Grammy-nominated band and that the Smithsonian Folkways label recently produced and released their second album and has plans to submit it to be considered for a Grammy this spring. But more importantly, I learned the fate of my grandfather’s Cuatro: it never leaves Ramón’s side. The friendship that suddenly formed between myself and Ramón felt like a sign from my grandfather to focus on my talent for photography and to give myself permission to live out loud—just as he had with his music. When Ramón heard that it was my dream to reconnect with my grandfather’s musician friends, camera in hand, we agreed that I should schedule a trip. It was like visiting an old friend and picking up where we left off. I recognized the details of his Cuatro immediately: its distinctive shape and color, the sweet sound it makes, the fragrance of its old case with a broken buckle. Ramón was proud to share that he keeps it in pristine condition; the only adjustment he’s made since his ownership are the new tuning pegs. I discovered that my grandfather’s creative legacy lives on—in the plucked strings of his Cuatro and in my own blood. Anitra Thompson, local portrait and lifestyle photographer at Anitra Photography, plans to photograph more legacy projects like this one with her grandfather’s Cuatro, both locally and abroad. Additional photos from her journey to Puerto Rico are available at AnitraPhotography.com/Legacy. May 2017 | South Charlotte Lifestyle

Now, a Carolina beach town is a far-cry from the cold-watered settlements along the Pacific. Here tourists aren’t tourists—they’re family. Beachfront bungalows offer a sweet escape from Charlotte’s daily grind, and the locals take in tourists like their own. The sun is shining and it’s officially a Carolina summer. BEST BEACH TOWNS

(CON TI N U ED) Bald Head Island Limited

Bald Head Island Down at the southernmost tip of the North Carolina coast you’ll find the secluded enclave of Bald Head Island. Accessible only by ferry and with local transportation limited to golf carts, bicycles and your own two feet, this wee town requires visitors to slow down a little—which is exactly how we like our beach destinations. Though the island is covered in thousands of acres of protected lands, including marches and maritime forests, luxury amenities this destination does not lack. Visitors can take to the links, indulge in a spa treatment, or pedal around the island, all with unimpeded views of the Atlantic without those usual beachside highrises.

Outer Banks Visitors Bureau

Hatteras Island The Outer Banks is a 130mile smile along the northern seaside of our state, a series of peninsulas and reefs seemingly made for vacation, but our favorite piece is Hatteras Island. Admittedly, this isn’t one of our favorite Carolinian beach towns—it’s several of them. On this secluded island you’ll find seven villages: Hatteras Village, Frisco, Buxton, Salvo, Waves, Avon and Rodanthe, each of which offer up romance novel-worthy charm. That charm extends far beyond the Atlantic’s waves. You can visit the tallest lighthouse in the nation (Cape Hatteras lighthouse), windsurf and ride horses along the beach, all in a day. Birdwatchers and bikinied sunbathers alike can find a niche on the extensive island and its tiny towns.

24

South Charlotte Lifestyle | May 2017

Hilton Head Island 12 miles of soft, sandy beaches wrap around the perimeter of Hilton Head Island, a retreat that offers low-country living at its best. Magnolias and moss-draped oaks line the island’s streets and acreages, and the Gulf Stream presses warm air in year-round, keeping the air and water alike at an average balmy 70 degrees. Though Hilton Head is a natural wonder, its manmade attractions are what make this luxurious destination unforgettable. The island is home to 24 golf courses (18 of which are open to the public), 300 tennis courts and six marinas. Over 200 shops and 200 restaurants sling fine goods and fare. And yet, Hilton Head manages to maintain that small town charm.

Hilton Head Island Bluffton Visitors & Convention Bureau

Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

21 miles southwest of Charleston is Kiawah Island, a destination with plush, posh amenities galore. Unlike other beach towns that were designed only with quick returns in mind, Kiawah has been carefully and intentionally developed over the years with an eye for preservation. A master plan developed in the '70s maintains the natural, lush landscape of the island, restricting development to a tasteful minimum. The town offers up five-star dining and upscale shopping for vacationers with heavy pockets, while Kiawah Island Golf Resort fosters relaxation with a spa and five championship golf courses. Ten miles of pristine, private beach form the island’s shore, perfect for sunbathing or swimming—without flocks of tourists. May 2017 | South Charlotte Lifestyle

L

iving in the Queen City has its perks – from the exciting atmosphere in uptown to the accessibility of endless dining and shopping adventures around every

corner. But one thing Charlotte doesn’t have is beachfront property. A coastal feel in the city is just what a Wilmington native and now South Charlotte resident wanted when collaborating with Swell Décor. A coastal feel in the city calls for a pristine balance of design. This theme should be subtle but consistent. The Swell Décor duo and this sweet family of four chose to communicate the coastal feel through a neutral color palette with calm greys, light and airy blues and crisp whites. The goal of the designers was to incorporate textures, coastal art and unique decor throughout the home with various woods, antique and acrylic art and a unique pop of fun coral fabric. Those wood accents stand out in the playroom entrance’s barn door, a vintage decorative ladder, and a sleek table in the informal dining room. One of the most striking additions was a resin clamshell for a nice eye-catching piece in the living room. The artwork is also anchored in the coastal feel with an acrylic depiction of waves crashing on the shore. This set of paintings will surely put the viewer’s mind at the beach, even if their body is rooted in Charlotte. Another trio of artwork is an antique set

BRINGING THE BEACH HOME

that illustrates a galaxy of starfish dancing across the canvas. This family brought the beach to them with Swell’s classically beachy decor.

A New Era Tech Savvy

R

ecently several leading Charlotte digital marketing agencies were invited to a Google event. The topic? "Google Tips for Optimizing Your Mobile Strategy."

A Google employee who specialized in everything mobile was on hand, and what we

learned was surprising. The event began with a simple question from our speaker: "Will everyone please unlock your phone and hand it to the person to your left?"

OUR NEW MOBILE REALITY IS DEFINED BY MICRO-MOMENTS ARTICLE BERNARD LEE

The reaction from everyone in attendance was apprehension at best. We were uncomfortable, and not everyone agreed to participate. What our speaker wanted to demonstrate was the importance of mobile in everything that we do, so much so that we are not willing to hand it to a complete stranger for 15 seconds. The point? Despite the relevance of our phones in our lives, Google estimates the investment by businesses into desktop is still higher than mobile. But I would have had no problem handing my laptop to the person to my left. Google has coined a new term: finger traffic. They estimate that we have moved from a foot traffic world to a "finger-traffic" universe. We are now averaging six hours a day in digital versus one hour five years ago. Everyone’s looking for answers, 24 hours a day and everywhere in the world. Business owners, especially retailers, need to make sure that they hit every touchpoint available. Interesting enough, with all this digital interaction, 92% of retail still occurs in store. Why? Because what a customer does before they enter the store has changed. This is occurring across devices and platforms, so there is no single path to purchase. Google believes that 72% of people use phones to do research before purchase and 82% of these people use their mobile device to help them make decisions on purchases while in the store. We're living in a new reality where business owners must be present whenever and wherever consumers are searching for information. We must begin thinking in terms of "micro-moments." This is when users are most open and accepting to brands (old or new) to make a purchase. In our new reality, consumers don't care about the store in which they're making the purchase. What matters most is the store that gets to them first with the best price. Micro-moments are about quick customer decisions. "I want to know." "I want to go." "I want to do and I want to buy." People are now caring less about brand loyalty (especially millennials), and are instead looking for an immediate solution that fits their need. These micro-moments can make the difference between winners and losers. If your company can anticipate the consumer’s decision and be ready when they're ready through organic or paid mobile search, you could win the sale and increase your brand awareness. This anticipation also means that you must be quick. Your website plays an integral role in user experience with a special emphasis on time to load. Google reports that 53% of customers abandon a website that takes over three seconds to load. Last year this number was 40%. In our new mobile reality, speed can kill your business or bring you to new heights. Don't cringe the next time someone asks to borrow your phone—they’re just doing research on their next in-store purchase. Bernard

Every customer is given personalized service that caters to their needs, helping make their dreams a reality. Celebrate their anniversary throughout the month of May.

Prior to arriving at Hughes Floor Covering, we visited four different flooring stores. No one was able to adequately assist us. The sales associate at Hughes was more than accommodating. He was not only knowledgeable about our options, he gave suggestions, had personal experience in installing the flooring system and provided us with samples to take home. On our installation day, our order was on time and the installers were friendly and very competent. They ensured we were completely satisfied, respected our property and left the work area clean. They did what they said they would do in every phase of the process.” – Recent Customer

t’s not easy to connect the red checkered table clothes and spaghetti stains of Goodfellas to the delicate and subtle dishes that hail from Japan, but in Charlotte such a connection exists. His name is Michael Shortino. Growing up in the kitchens of New York with his father and grandfather—both chefs—Shortino developed a passion for the kitchen early on. And although his earliest glimpses into the world of cooking were in those classic Italian restaurants we all recognize from cinema, Shortino stopped cooking those dishes a long time ago. For 20 years, in Phoenix and more recently in Charlotte, Shortino has concentrated on the quiet art of Japanese cuisine. The integrity and exactitude of the Japanese culture—especially in cuisine—captured his cooking heart. After opening Baku, a Robata lounge, in Charlotte, Shortino decided to invest in his own enterprise: Futo Buta. Long before the ramen house became a reality, Shortino was joined by his business partner Tsuyoshi Ono from Tokyo. “We are great friends and met when I opened Baku. He was a crucial ally in that opening,” notes Shortino. “I realized his level of integrity for our profession matched mine and we set off to change the culinary landscape of Charlotte together.” And changing it they are. Futo Buta is unlike any other eatery in our city, with fresh, refined, and unique takes on Japanese cuisine. They

offer unique, Southernized fare with Japanese roots, including lots of steaming ramen heaped with fresh ingredients. “We make everything from scratch at Futo,” says Shortino, citing Japanese integrity as inspiration. “That’s very difficult to do for such a small restaurant, and requires 15-20 cooks at once.” It may be difficult, but it’s worth it. With dishes like Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice that are simple enough to make at home (check out the recipe!), but complex in flavor, Futo Buta has become a staple of Charlotte’s culinary landscape. Next
