RELATIONSHIPS FOR A VARIETY OF NEEDS. When people experience healthy friendships, family dynamics and even casual positive interactions with others, they feel a sense of belonging and satisfaction, which translates to better health. Unfortunately, when your social connections and relationships don’t meet your individual needs, feelings of loneliness and isolation may occur and can have potentially devastating consequences. HOW DO LONELINESS AND ISOLATION AFFECT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH? Feelings of loneliness and isolation can significantly impact our health, especially when these feelings occur for an extended time. Unsatisfactory social relationships or connections can lead to a host of problems for both body and mind. Physical health can be impacted by loneliness in surprising ways. According to the Centers for Disease Control, loneliness can significantly impact our health. It increases the risk for premature death, strokes, heart disease, heart failure and other cardiovascular issues at levels comparable to those who smoke, are obese or

physically inactive. Various studies have also shown correlations between loneliness or isolation and other complications, reports Amy Novotney in “The risks of social isolation.” These include poor sleep, decreased self-control, higher stress levels and lower immunity, to name a few. Mental health struggles can also develop from feeling isolated or lonely. This is true not only for adults but children and adolescents. On June 3, 2020, researchers pub-

increasingly share their plastic surgery experiences, men are recognizing they too want to appear as youthful and energetic on the outside as they feel inside. FREQUENTLY REQUESTED NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES FOR MEN Dr. Gear’s male patients commonly request Laser Hair Removal, Botox and dermal fillers. These non-surgical treatments require minimal procedure and recovery time. A youthful appearance can be regained through these simple treatments, yielding subtle, yet noticeable results in as little as one appointment. Popular options for those facing age-related weight gain around the waist and abdomen that proves resistant to exercise and diet, often opt for minimally invasive, non-surgical body contouring

procedures.

Providence

Plastic Surgery & Skin Center offers two options: CoolSculpting and CoolTone. These treatments target and effectively remove fat deposits and build muscle. Liposuction always ranks among the top requested cosmetic surgeries for men seeking a way to lose stubborn fat. THE CONSULTATION PROCESS Dr. Gear’s patients appreciate his attentive and honest consultation style. As the doctor observes, “People resonate with the truth.” If a patient requests a procedure that will result in an unnatural look, Dr. Gear tells them so and suggests an appropriate alternative. This straight-forward approach has earned Dr. Gear the trust and respect of his patients, leading to numerous endorsements: “3/4ths of my business is word of mouth” notes Dr. Gear. Dr. Nicolette Chahin and Dr. Jamie Martin joined the practice last year and brought a wealth of knowledge of the newest technologies and high-efficiency treatment protocols. Webb Orthodontics is an all-star team. The practice has hundreds of glowing reviews, many of them echoing this sentiment: “This practice is one of the most efficient, professional and well-run offices I have ever seen,” Erin D. says in a patient review. “The staff is so friendly and all of the doctors are amazing!” From the new patient consultation to the celebration of braces removal, Webb Orthodontics wants its patients to actually enjoy their smile journey. LOCAL LIMELIGHT ARBORETUM FAMILY DENTISTRY HAS DENTAL CARE SOLUTIONS THAT HELP PREVENT FUTURE, LONG-TERM ISSUES

SCHOOL, MY GRANDMOTHER, THEN 80 YEARS OLD, STOPPED SOCIALIZING BECAUSE OF ILL-FITTING DENTURES. My grandfather was devastated because she would no longer accompany him to the bowling alley, a restaurant or the senior center. She was embarrassed because of the sounds her lower denture made when she was eating and speaking, and she also had while eating. Because she had lost so much bone a new denture was not an option and implants to stabilize the denture were not yet available. My grandfather tried everything to make it better by grinding the denture himself, then using denture adhesive and denture pads. Eventually, the issue profoundly affected her mental health and physical health. She lost her ability to eat and became depressed. Within a matter

there is exposed tooth structure and saliva flow decreases.

This is why, as a part of my treatment for patients of all ages, I perform additional procedures so the margins of fillings, crowns and bridges are carefully installed well below the gum line. This ensures that the crown margin and remaining tooth structure are protected from both decay-causing bacteria and the more extensive decalcification and decay caused by the destructive oral environment that develops when there is decreased saliva flow. Another issue seniors face is the inability to eat comfortably if they have ill-fitting dentures. Over time, the tissue under the dentures changes – it can get mobile and painful if there is bone resorption. When this happens, eating and speaking become a source of anxiety for these seniors. There are both surgical and non-surgical solutions for this issue, and following a discussion to explain these treatment options we are able to provide the best care for our patients on an individual basis. One underutilized option that I offer patients is the use of mini implants to stabilize the denture. This is the most cost-effective and affordable option that will both stabilize the denture and permanently preserves the bone. If this had been available when I was graduating from dental school, my grandparents would most definitely have had a better quality of life in their final years. I have spent much of my time in continuing education learning techniques that can make a difference in the long term health and quality of life of my senior patients. I now find that these techniques are the best practices for all my adult patients since they will inevitably benefit from this extra measure of protection. If you like salad, add a mix of kale to the lettuce. If you’re not a salad eater, kale makes a great addition to smoothies.

You can add spinach to both smoothies and pizza. Spinach quiche and spinach pie are also dishes many people love. BROCCOLI.
