n my medical practice, I am often faced with treating patients who suffer from chronic pain conditions whose pain is exacerbated by, or perhaps even caused by, carrying excessive weight. This is especially true in people reporting low back pain, which according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), is the leading cause of disability worldwide and effects 31 million Americans at any given time. It is the leading cause of disability in Americans under 45 years old, and more that 26 million Americans between ages 20 – 64 experience frequent back pain. Furthermore, adults with low back pain are often in worse physical and mental health than people who do not have low back pain. Adults reporting low back pain are three times as likely to be in fair or poor health, and more than four times as likely to experience serious psychological distress as people without low back pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Dietary Guideline for Americans 2010, a healthy eating plan: • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars • Stays within your daily caloric needs

As a physician trying to address the holistic needs of my patients, I am more interested in preventing unnecessary pain versus having to treat it. For example, I recommend the use of a food-intake/calorie tracking tool such as MyFitnessPal, and I often recommend physical therapy or fitness programs to improve mobility and healing. Bottom line: there are many unavoidable maladies in life such as accidents or degenerative diseases like arthritis, so our goal should be to take control of our health to delay or even avoid the often associated pain.

Dear Dr. RJ, We’re already a month into the new year and I still haven’t made any resolutions. Some people say that making resolutions is pointless. What do you think? -Still Stagnant
Dear Still Stagnant,
It’s never too late to make a resolution. Most people who dislike resolutions set their goals too broad and as a result, fail to meet them. I suggest being SMART about your goal setting. Make them S-specific, M-measurable, A-attainable, R-realistic, and T-time-limited. This will ensure that you know the exact moment when you’ve succeeded. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you.

hasidy Adams, who was a young, heart transplant recipient who inspired many friends and family during her short-lived time on Earth. Despite the insurmountable obstacles that she faced with heart problems, she did not allow her medical conditions to prevent her from living a happy life. At the age of 13, Chasidy was diagnosed with Dilated Cardio Myopathy (enlarged heart), which resulted in the need for a life-saving procedure. In October of 2008, Chasidy received a donor heart transplantation and began her new journey of life with a positive attitude. Both middle and high school years for Chasidy consisted of doctor’s visits and hospital stays. In May of 2010, Chasidy underwent a second open-heart surgery to repair a leaky valve. Nevertheless, she continued to excel in academics and even began writing a book about her journey. In January of 2013, the doctors explained to Chasidy that her donor heart was failing and that they did not expect her to live throughout the rest of the

year. At the time, Chasidy was in the 12th grade and was preparing to graduate high school in May. Her mom felt that Chasidy may give up after hearing that awful diagnosis but Chasidy’s faith in God allowed her to continue her path that she believed was created for her. Chasidy graduated high school as an honor student and began her pursuit to a Degree in Mass Communications. She had outlived the diagnosis given to her by doctors. While applying for scholarships, Chasidy was shocked to learn that resources for young adults like herself was scarce. Chasidy explained to her Mom that teens who have been transplanted with a donor’s heart and still continue a happy life should be rewarded. Chasidy introduced the idea of creating a foundation that would to offer scholarship and rewards to children in high school as well as those who are pursuing a college career. Chasidy felt strong about what she believed to be her true purpose in life. While undergoing a routine biopsy in August of 2013, Chasidy’s donor heart failed and she was not able to complete the task. Today, her mother, Godmother, nieces and best friend continue Chasidy’s dreams to operate a successful nonprofit organization such as Chattbox Foundation, Inc. (CFI) CFI’s mission is to provide financial rewards through scholarships and wishes to high school and college students who have been transplanted with a donor’s heart.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH!
ccording to HealthFinder.gov, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every
year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. Make a difference in your community: Spread the word about strategies for preventing heart disease and encourage people to live heart healthy lives. HOW CAN AMERICAN HEART MONTH MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
We can use this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it — both at home and in the community. Here are just a few ideas: • Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt. • Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day. This can help students start good habits early. • Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by

The Pecan by Donna Permell of Prime Phocus
404.762.8444 On the Southside, The Pecan is hardly a secret. For ten years now, Chef Tony Morrow has filled a much-needed void with this casual fine dining institution located across the train depot on Main Street in College Park. Though mere minutes away from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, The Pecan is an oasis of calm and serenity. Downhome yet elegant, the main dining area is distinguished by the 1917 “Drink Coca-Cola” advertisement on exposed brick on the restaurant’s main wall. There is also theatrical red drapery that is a throwback many would argue is a good carryover from the Old South. Because it’s an intimate space roughly seating 85, The Pecan is ideal for date night. Live music, usually a saxophonist, amps up the romance. As for food, the shrimp and grits is a crowd pleasing entrée, dinner and brunch, or more precisely, blackened shrimp with Cajun crème sauce over pepper jack grits. The Tybee Island Crab

But, in general, securing reservations is quite easy and walking in can work as well for those who like to be spontaneous. All in all what Tuskegee alum Chef Tony Morrow has created is very special. Keeping it close to home never fails when The Pecan is handling the meal.

South Metro Development Outlook
A Conversation with Founder Michael Hightower PHOTOGRAPHY DARNELL REMY OF PINNACLE STUDIOS
TELL ME A BIT ABOUT SOUTH METRO DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK (SMDO)?
South Metro Development Outlook is a meeting of minds where leaders involved in the growth and development of South Metro convene to share ideas and discuss future opportunities. The conference serves as a platform to convene industry experts, corporate executives, government leaders and elected officials interested in fostering economic growth in Atlanta’s southern crescent. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE THE BRAINCHILD OF THIS PHENOMENAL CONFERENCE. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START IN 2001?
The conference was started because of the need to educate and inform the community of the development trends in the area, to provide an economic forecast regarding the state of the economy, and show how these factors impact South Metro Development. THE UPCOMING CONFERENCE ON FEBRUARY 18TH MARKS THE 14TH YEAR IN EXISTENCE. TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE SOUTH METRO DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK’S SUCCESS?
My successes are attributed to an increase in development opportunities in South Metro, available land, and the need to address market needs and demands in this area. SOUTH METRO DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK FEATURES THE HOTTEST TOPICS IN THE INDUSTRY YEAR-AFTER-YEAR. WHAT ARE THE FEATURED TOPICS FOR SMDO 2016?
The topics for SMDO 2016 are: 2016 Economic Forecast and Development Update, Atlanta Aerotropolis Alliance Takes Off, Education Legislation and its Impact on South Metro, Millennial Movement, and The Digital Age and South Metro. EACH YEAR, A RECIPIENT IS PRESENTED THE PRESTIGIOUS OUTLOOK AWARD DURING THE CONFERENCE. WHO ARE SOME OF THE PAST RECIPIENTS? WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?
Some of the past recipients are Wieland, Porsche Cars North America, City of College Park, Georgia Power, and Atlanta Business Chronicle. An advisory board of local industry professionals determines which companies or local government should be honored at the conference. WHEN YOU REFLECT ON SOUTH METRO DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD ABOUT?
I am most proud of new development activity, new housing development, additional commercial and retail establishments, and information, education and data that is used by decision makers who are considering South Metro business opportunities. 26

The South Metro Development Outlook Conference serves as a platform to convene professionals with an interest in fostering smart growth in the southern crescent highlighting the following seven counties: Clayton, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Henry, Spalding and South Fulton and the southern part of Atlanta. SMDO consistently features highly acclaimed industry experts and government officials providing invaluable information relevant to South Metro’s continued growth in today’s ever changing economy. SMDO 2015 was a major success according to the feedback provided by those in attendance. The theme was “It’s All About The South,” and it attracted over 650 attendees who listened

As a family, we enjoy traveling and outdoor activities. Most of our free time is spent participating in
youth sports-football, basketball, track and baseball. Steven Robinson is the defensive coordinator of our local youth football team. He's coached all three of his sons and serves as a mentor to youth in the community. Tiffany stays active within youth sports by volunteering as team mom, and staying active in the Women of Leadership Organization and school activities. Our oldest child, Micah, attends Woodward Academy and our two youngest attend Seeds of Faith Christian Academy. We love the diversity of students and competitive education Woodward offers. Micah Robinson is the starting cornerback and wide receiver for the Woodward War Eagles. One of the best assets of Seeds of Faith Christian Academy is our youngest boys' involvement in their This family is

We love our South Fulton neighborhood and community. We were around back when the Publix was first built off Camp Creek Parkway. PRECISION ATHLETIC CORPS
Let me start off by saying I’m still sore. Three days later. And I’m a triathlete. Or, at least I thought I was. That should give you some indication of what to expect when you walk into Precision Athletic Corps. If you love the workouts that challenge you, encourage you, and make you feel like you’re an athlete, all at the same time, then this is the place for you. Zedrick, owner and trainer extraordinaire, is an inspiration all by himself. (I’ll let him tell you his story). But his products, the athletes he trains, are the icing on the cake. Ropes, monster tires, sleds—they’re all in there. And you get them incorporated into your workout. Or not, depending on the day. You won’t see tons of workout machines or weights; that’s not his style. But you don’t need it there. I’ve been an athlete my entire life, and I can only remember being pushed like that twice: as a competitive gymnast, and on a competitive track. You get where I’m going here? You get a workout like the best of the best. Of course, he works at your level. So, no need to fret (man, I showed my age on that term). Even if you’ve never worked out before, he will challenge right where you are. But, you will walk out feeling like you conquered something, like you were productive, like you achieved something. PRO TIP: pace yourself on the jumping jacks on the soft mats. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that. This is not child’s play. Well actually, it can be, because they have kids as young as six doing these workouts! Next time, I’m going to take my Superwoman shirt in there. I’ll change into it AFTER I finish the workout. Just in case I don’t. I’ll see you guys in ten pounds. Ha! Congrats, PAC! You’re a pick! Find them online at poweredbyprecision.com. SWERVE GRILL
I just found the “Cheers” of Camp Creek. Except it’s called Swerve Grille. I say Cheers because I saw them talking and hugging people, calling them by name as they came in, sat and drank and ate at the bar and tables. Upon being seated, Nicole (waitress) was so warm and welcoming, offering me drinks while I waited for food. She was attentive, constantly checking in on me. Customer service: check. And, it’s not just a grill, as they have great ungrilled (is that a word?) food. I’m pretty sure my favorite is the jumbo shrimp and grits, where the grits are actually a grit cake, and the shrimp are actually jumbo. And it’s all actually good. You know I’m a self-proclaimed foodie. In addition to the S&G, I tried the stuffed chicken. OMG! Good food: check. In short, go there, invite some friends, eat and drink. It’s a relaxed environment, where you’ll feel like home. I’ve heard they pour pretty good drinks as well. Tell Barbie, the owner, that Michelle sent you. Then, tell her your name. She’ll remember it. Congrats, Swerve Grill! You’re a pick! Find them online at swervegrille.net. 34
