Art & Beauty “Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

MARCH 2015 publisher

If Emerson is correct, then I think we can assert that Tulsa is a city of taste, beauty and art. We are surrounded by creation-- people making beautiful music, paintings, buildings, food, poetry, dance, you name it. What city Tulsa’s size cultivates and supports the arts more? It is widely recognized that the mark of a cultured city is the presence of a major art museum plus an “SOB,” the “high-art triumvirate of symphony, opera, ballet,” as Richard L. Florida refers to it in his book, The Rise of the Creative Class: Revisited. Tulsa, with her Philbrook and Gilcrease, her Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Opera and Tulsa Ballet, has put herself on par with our country’s most sophisticated cities where the arts are concerned. The energy that created these institutions here set the bar and set the tone for a town to embrace its creative self. Tulsa’s leaders and citizens value the arts, and that alone unleashes a creative force that affects the entire city. Tulsa, your commitment to the arts is remarkable. I’m acutely aware of how much I personally appreciate beauty. The world is a beautiful canvas to my eyes, and I do walk around with a constant sense of awe. It is important to me to have art that I love in my home, and for my home to be visually pleasing because texture and color and form have a direct impact on how I feel. But beauty is also in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it. Recently when my daughter explained why she wanted to dye her hair blue (because she is an artist and wanted to express herself through her hair), I learned a lesson about how much my idea of beauty can be stuck in a box I define. We compromised with streaks, and I admit that against her raven hair, Snow White skin and cerulean eyes, the startling strands are truly beautiful to behold. Not to mention the loveliness of the heart inside. And isn’t that the true wonder of art? What it reveals about the inside of us? Of those who create it, of those who enjoy or appreciate it. The way we express ourselves through whatever medium we choose, is a direct connect to who we are, what we value or even what we are wrestling with. We hope you enjoy the pieces of art we’ve been able to share this month. On a personal note, it is a special treat for me to be able offer a “bookend of Kendras” with this arts issue which begins with this Kendra’s letter and ends with Parting Thoughts about Tulsa’s art scene from another Kendra, a talented local writer/artist I’ve known since she was 9. Her sister, Kellie Blevins Kirk, was a dear friend and fellow arts advocate who passed on far too early.

What Does 2015 Hold in Store for Investors? If you’re an investor, you probably had a pretty good year in 2014. But what’s in store for 2015? What investment moves should you consider? First, be aware that the investment environment seems fairly favorable. We’re seeing signs of improving economic growth and positive corporate earnings. So it may be a good time to add quality stocks, especially if they can help you fill gaps in your investment portfolio. Next, be prepared for rising interest rates. The Federal Reserve may raise short-term rates this year, but even before the Fed acts, long-term rates could rise. As a result, bond prices may fall. To respond to this possibility, consider building a ladder of short-, intermediate– and long-term bonds. Such a ladder gives you the potential to redeem your maturing shortterm bonds and reinvest them in the new, higher-paying bonds. While you should make the most of your investment decisions based on long-term considerations, it’s always a good idea to be attuned to what’s happening in the world around you—and to respond appropriately.

For those with a passion for arts education in Oklahoma, take note. The Oklahoma legislature is due to consider funding for the Oklahoma School for the Visual and Performing Arts. The legislature created the school in 2009. Since that time, funding for the school’s start-up has not been appropriated. With proper funding, students who excel in the visual and performing arts will be afforded advanced opportunities to study the arts, similar to the education students who excel in math and sciences are given at the Oklahoma School for Science and Mathematics. To prioritize arts education in Oklahoma, contact key senators including Brian Bingman, Clark Jolley and Gary Stanislawski, and representatives including Lee Denney, Scott Martin, Earl Sears and Travis Dunlap. “T

hinking about art calls to mind an art gallery friend who had a wonderful collection of fine art on display. He shared with me his interpretations of certain pieces. As he described some of the highlights of the paintings, I could see and hear such enthusiasm from him that I realized how art could truly reach our senses. The more he spoke about art and its psychological effects, my mind went deeper in thought. The exposure to this medium was enchanting and swept me away to another time and place. It was truly an enchanting experience. As a designer with Luxe Furniture & Design, I like to incorporate art in the home and workplace. I believe that art is an expression of oneself. That may be why we see a particular picture and are instantly attracted to it. This medium can help identify who we are through paint and other materials. Some individuals are interested in vivid, energetic colors and shapes, while others are attracted to soft, serene colors. Many times clients will tell me that after experiencing a stressful day, once they come home and sit in a comfortable chair and stare at a nice piece of art, they enter a more relaxed state. Art can be a form of escape from reality, but it can also inspire the mind. When designing an office space, I like to know if my client needs art that sparks motivational thinking or perhaps something that is calming and peaceful. Having art in our homes tells the world something about us.

Art allows us to make our own interpretations. Art can also be symbolic of our inner selves. When people look at art, sometimes it takes them to hidden memories from the past. As a designer, I encourage my clients to surround themselves with art that draws forth positive feelings, but also allows them to use their imagination and ingenuity. Allowing art into your life can be magical. --Nancy Horton, Luxe Designer BS M.Ed, Interior Design At Luxe, we are happy to help you find the right piece of art for your home or work space! WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN AN ART GALLERY IN DOWNTOWN TULSA?

At the time, in the early 90s, there was plenty of space available in downtown Tulsa and it was inexpensive. I have been downtown for more than 20 years and I have loved watching it grow and flourish. I love being a part of it.

I KNOW FAMILY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO YOU AND THEY’RE ALL VERY ARTISTIC AND INVOLVED WITH THE GALLERY AS WELL. IN WHAT WAYS HAS ART MADE ALL OF YOU

AS AN ARTIST YOURSELF, WHAT INSPIRES

EVEN CLOSER?

YOU AND WHAT ORIGINALLY IGNITED YOUR

We are an artistic family. My wife, Kay, is in the gallery when she’s not volunteering her time with Tulsa Girls Art School. My daughter, Madelyn, is currently my office manager and enjoys photography in her spare time, and my son, Spencer, is an artist in my gallery and has created a large following. We are all very close and it is a gift to have my family share in my passion.

PASSION FOR ART OF ALL FORMS?

I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t inspired by all forms of art. I was once very ill with spinal meningitis and was briefly blind, and was told that I might never see again. I promised myself that when and if my sight returned, I would be involved in art the rest of my life. I started my company, Royce Myers Art, Ltd., shortly after. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT IN TULSA AND ELSEWHERE?

In Oklahoma, the beautiful museums and parks we have in Tulsa, and Grand Lake where we love to relax. We also vacation a lot in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, where I find a lot of artistic inspiration. WHO ARE SOME EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE YOU’VE GOTTEN TO WORK WITH THROUGH YOUR GALLERY?

Wow. My life has been enriched by so many artists and clients. As an art importer for many years, I’ve become great friends with innumerable artists I’ve represented, as well as interior designers and architects. The late, great and internationally known designer Charles Faudree was a client and friend for 30 years; we miss him very much. Artist Derek Penix walked into my gallery one day with his first painting and I sold it. He went on to study under the greatest painters of our time and is now a nationally award-winning artist. We’ve had art installations for celebrities including Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Terry Bradshaw, and numerous Dallas Cowboy football players’ 16

Tulsa Performing Arts Center offers a stimulating visual experience beyond its more well-known cultural offerings. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COURTNEY LEWIS

I

n any given year, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center (PAC) will host more than 500 events in its various theaters and reception halls. Walking through the front doors of the PAC, you might expect to see a Broadway show, the ballet or possibly a symphony. What you probably didn’t expect was free admission to a Tulsa art collection valued at almost $2 million dollars. The Collection at the PAC is a diverse compilation of pieces from various art mediums created by international, national, Native American and Oklahoma artists, adding another exciting element to your PAC experience.

HOW IT BEGAN

The PAC was the vision of John H. Williams, CEO of The Williams Companies. He had purchased a nine-block area of downtown Tulsa at 3rd Street and Boston to construct two 30-story towers. Instead, he decided to build one tall tower (known today as the BOK Tower) and gave the extra land to the City of Tulsa to use for a performing arts center. Williams then made a proposal to local philanthropist Leta Chapman. He proposed that he would get the citizens of Tulsa to raise half of the money for the PAC if she could raise the other half. In 1973 a bond passed that did just that, turning Williams’ dream of a performing arts center into reality. Opening in March of 1977, the PAC building is the work of Minoru Yamasaki, the same architect who designed the BOK Building in Tulsa and the World Trade Center Towers in New York City. NOT JUST PERFORMING ARTS

The permanent collection of art at the PAC was funded by a city ordinance that designated 1 percent of all construction costs for any public facility be allocated to providing art for that building. This ordinance was designed to spotlight Oklahoma and Native American art in city buildings. The PAC art collection includes pieces by P.S. Gordon, Alexandre Hogue, J. Jay Vicker, David Lee Brown, Louise Nevelson and Ruthie Blaylock Jones, just to name a few. Valued at $1 million dollars, the centerpiece of The Collection is Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture “Seaform,” which sits at the entrance to the PAC Promenade. PERFORMANCES AT THE PAC

According to Nancy Hermann, director of marketing, 14 local organizations regularly perform at the PAC’s Chapman Music Hall, John H. Williams Theatre and the Charles E. Norman Theatre. Some of the companies that utilize the PAC are the Tulsa Opera, Tulsa Ballet, Theatre Pops and American Theatre Company. CONTINUED >

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS (CONTINUED)

The permanent collection of art at the PAC was funded by a city ordinance that designated 1 percent of all construction costs for any public facility be allocated to providing art for that building.

The Chapman Music Hall seats 2,365 people and has been home to performances of The Lion King, Wicked and Les Miserables. Right now, the Tulsa PAC is presenting Chicago and The Phantom Of The Opera is set to return April 15th. In addition to the Broadway shows, the Tulsa Ballet will present The Three Muskateers on March 27-29. In 2006, the PAC launched MyTicketOffice.com, a full service ticketing company that sells tickets for 12 venues in Oklahoma and Texas. With an attendance of 263,000 for the 2013-2014 season, the PAC grossed $10.6 million in ticket sales. This translates to a $35

million dollar economic impact and $1,245,000 in sales tax generated for the City of Tulsa. A PLACE TO FIND IT ALL

From an extensive and diverse collection of art to symphonies, plays, ballets and Broadway shows, the PAC has something for everyone. It has become an established part of culture and arts in the city of Tulsa and consistently provides our community a variety of entertainment choices. The Tulsa Performing Arts Center is a significant part of our city’s history and should be a must on any “things to do in Tulsa” list.

rowing up and facing challenges of the world has never been easy, but it’s even harder if you aren’t aware what to look out for. Equipping people to be able to make good choices in life is exactly what Operation Aware of Oklahoma does. This unique, award-winning organization has been operating for 36 years. Operation Aware primarily provides 8-week programs in area schools to teach age appropriate, preventative information about alcohol, drugs, bullying and other topics in order to prepare for dealing with these potential issues. If this topical education is important to you, check with your school’s principal to generate interest or find out which grades the students will have these classes. Some families certainly tackle these topics at home, but how many do not? Operation Aware is now also providing programs for teaching similar topics to adults to further empower them as parents and hopefully spark discussion with their kids at home. While the regular topics are included, a relatively new and needed topic is Cyber-Safety. If you aren’t aware of potential pitfalls, you don’t know what to look out for. Equipping parents on the latest information is vital to continue important discussion at home. Corporations can sponsor Lunch & Learn events for employee training for these issues. As with any non-profit organization, fundraising is extremely important. A unique and upcoming event is OperationART: Awareness Reached Together. Each year, a group of students will be paired with local artists and work on pieces over the next several months. The pairings have already begun with 11 student/artist pairings in a variety of mediums of painting, photography, beadwork, blown glass and film all under the theme of “I Choose Tulsa.” OperationART culminates on Thursday, June 11 at Willowbrush Studio + Gallery located at 8545 E 41st just East of Memorial. The pieces will be on display all week during Willowbrush’s 10 a.m.-5 p.m. hours, and they will be auctioned off during the Thursday night event. Willowbrush sells a variety of art from more than 20 artists, and for any gallery art purchased that week, they will give 10 percent to Operation Aware. If you would like sponsorship information or tickets to attend the fundraiser auction, visit their website OperationAware.org and go to Upcoming Events. People are helped by education, and that requires the support of others. To get that support, people have to first be aware of the need and willingness to help. Kids are the future of our society, and the future is much brighter if they are making the best choices. This is not something to be done alone; this takes a full scale Operation for Awareness Reached Together.

OPERATIONART ARTIST PARTNERS Jason Burks of Retrospec Films will work with a student on a video PSA for corporate sponsorship. If you haven’t seen his production “Tulsa, Be Your Own Boom,” be sure to look it up on your nearest electronic device. What started as a hobby with his son, Dr. Paul Bevilacqua has been blowing glass for the past nine years and they have even travelled to Murano, Italy, to study glassblowing together. Architectural History and Heritage Preserved VISIT TULSA ART DECO MUSEUM PHOTOGRAPHY PRESTON POWER

O

ne of the legacies of Tulsa’s origins as an oil capital is the beautiful art deco architecture created by the wealth and vision of those early turn-of-thecentury barons. Aspiring to create a dynamic new city, they took inspiration from the French, the world’s design and fashion leader who had popularized the decorative style known as Art Nouveau and evolved into Art Deco. Tulsa boasts nearly 40 buildings in this style and has become one of the nation’s premier Art Deco centers. (Find a list of these sites to see at TulsaPreservationCommission.org.) The historic Philcade building, itself an icon of the art deco era, is the perfect host for the Tulsa Art Deco Museum, where our proud architectural history has found

a glamorous home thanks to the efforts of another visionary group of Tulsans who opened TADM in 2012. TADM is a boutique window gallery museum. The original lobby window fronts have been reclaimed as areas of display, and feature examples of the Art Deco movement, from the 1920s to the 1980s. Come and experience Tulsa in the way its builders intended – with awe. The museum operates with a handful of part-time volunteers. They are seeking monetary sponsorship to create exhibits and keep the museum doors open, volunteers to help build displays and run the museum, recruiting board members and beefing up their advisory committee. She worked with a fellow teacher to develop an innovative Downtown Tulsa Studies project, where students spend a hands-on semester getting to know their city.

She loves the smaller Holland Hall class sizes, “because I’m interacting with students in such a way that I really connect with them. I have a sense of what they’re going through in all aspects of their lives. I so enjoy helping them find their comfort zone, experiencing those breakthrough moments, seeing them achieve and excel. Parting Thoughts

Paint the Town WORDS KENDRA BLEVINS

O

ne of the things I love most about Tulsa is Tulsa’s love of art. The booming Brady Arts District, the vivid murals that are popping up all over town, new sculptures installed along Riverside Drive, all point to Tulsa’s love of an artistic aesthetic and our desire to foster creativity. I work at Tulsa Girls Art School (TGAS), which is a non-profit, afterschool art program that provides art instruction to underserved girls from Tulsa Public Schools. Our mission is to help a new generation of artists to flourish and we couldn’t do that if art wasn’t valued in Tulsa. The students at TGAS have taught me a lot about art. Our girls come to us at the ripe old age of 8, eager to learn how to paint, draw or build sculptures, the right way. You know what I’ve found? There isn’t really a right way to create art. Much of the process of working on an art project is experimental; we don’t always know what we’ll find on the canvas when we’re done. Each artist has to discover her own process and most importantly, to not give up when it’s not turning out the way she thought it would. It’s not supposed to turn out the way you thought it would because there are forces at work that you cannot control. When you are an artist and you’re looking at the object that you are going to recreate in paint or pen, it is changed and shaped by you, by who you are, your memories, experiences and physicality.

34

Tulsa Lifestyle | March 2015

What was once just a thought in the artist’s mind is now a new object, an experience, existing in the world, and it can make you feel something. Next time you view art, really think about how it’s making you feel. What is so amazing about art is that it is truly one of a kind. Each brush stroke, the choice of color and composition, is utterly original, like a thumbprint. Tulsa’s artists give our city it’s own creative thumbprint. Many artists are inspired by what is in and around Tulsa. For example, the preserved buildings and signs along Route 66, our Native American heritage and the breathtaking architecture of the art deco buildings downtown. The Brady Arts District is literally crawling with artists and patrons (First Friday Art Crawl), we have artifacts from Woody Guthrie’s life in a museum with a mural painted by local artist Aaron Whisner, who was clearly inspired by Guthrie’s work: “This Machine Kills Fascists,” quotes the mural. The students of TGAS have also painted murals in town in order to beautify it: one at the departures gate of the airport and one at the end of North Elgin by ONEOK Field. Tulsa wants artists to paint the town and patrons to enjoy it. That’s what I love about Tulsa.
