Going home.
NOVEMBER 2015
As
t he leaves settle around us, we hardly realize that we have also settled into the routine of fall. School schedules, football games, crock pot dinners, and whatever else feels good on cool sunny days. We are just beginning to relax after the mad rush that comes with school starting. But if you look a few weeks down the road, it's already Thanksgiving! This is a fun time with family and friends: eating, sitting by the fire, playing games, watching holiday specials and football games on TV, or just reminiscing about the past. Speaking of football and the past, the November issue has a little of both. November is the home issue but I suppose it's how you interpret it. When I think of home, I think of being young again and home in the Catskill Mountains. Since I've been in Tulsa for 25 years, I wondered what it would be like to go home to Tulsa. This cover picture of driving along Route 66 towards Tulsa gave me some ideas. We have a wonderful article on the revival of Route 66 as well as some of the businesses along there. Since TU is on Route 66 and it's football season, why not get to know the new coach? We also have some ideas for upgrading your tile and stone, just in time for the holidays or taking in some shows and enjoying all that Tulsa has to offer. But if you have to get out of town, there is a great road trip that you can read about before you go.

You can find beautiful housing, fabulous food, and plenty of activities in various assisted living locations, but the question remains: how will my loved one be treated? Shortly after my father moved into Saint Simeon’s, Patrice, a staff member, grabbed my arm and told me, “I just love that man! I’d love to take him home with me!” Knowing he’s cared for by people who appreciate him means everything to me. Sincerely, Kim

A HIDDEN
GEM
IN THE PEARL DISTRICT ARTICLE CASEY STRUTTMANN PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
idden in the midst of the expanding Pearl District, Visions Tile and Stone has become a gem among residential and commercial building and remodeling gurus. A wholesaler and retailer of various stones and tiles from across the world, Visions is a family-owned business started by a husband and wife team, Dennis and Lorrie Pine, who have a long history in the industry. Dennis has 36 years of industry experience, and Lorrie brings 33+ years in the accounting and financial industries background, 25 of which were in the tile and stone business. Moving from California back to Lorrie’s hometown here, they started Visions out of their garage in May of 2009 but quickly expanded to a bricks and mortar location, literally from word of mouth referrals. Visions popularity is truly based on client satisfaction and recommendation. After significant research, Lorrie and Dennis decided on locating their business in the Pearl District, due to its convenient midtown location and gateway to downtown. The location was also chosen based on its sense of community and its presence of locally-owned and family businesses. They quickly began designing their showroom, and by January 2010 opened the doors. “We wanted to be a unique source for our clients and to show our clients something they haven’t seen but may now want,” says Dennis. And they have succeeded. Their showroom has an abundant selection of tiles and stones, from ceramics and porcelains to slate, granite, limestone, travertine and glass and metal tiles, as well as unique handmade ceramic and stone lines. A steady flow of new products arrives monthly, if not weekly, to keep the selections current. Though tile and stone is their specialty, the main focus is always on their clients. “Our business philosophy is the golden rule. We want to treat our clients the way we would like to be treated,” says Lorrie. After walking through the doors, you will be met with a welcoming greeting. Dennis and Lorrie have a laid-back demeanor, creating a casual and friendly atmosphere. Whether you are a weekend do-it-yourselfer, just browsing, or are a well-known architect, builder or designer, everyone is welcome. The Pines want each and every person that walks through their doors to leave having had a happy experience. Speaking with Dennis and Lorrie, you can hear the pride in what they do. They are excited about where the tile and stone industry is headed and have a true knack for creating an amazing client relationship. They were extremely excited as they discussed a couple of new product lines they will be introducing over the next few months. Dennis has worked with these lines or has followed them closely for almost two decades. He emphasizes their need to really know a product and develop a strong relationship with the vendor before committing to a line; and, this is only a small example of doing exactly that. “We love making people happy with what we do.” November 2015 | Tulsa Lifestyle

Midtown Market Honors the Past in Tulsa's Newest Urban Hot Spot ARTICLE DEBRA LAIZURE | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HUMPHREY
T
here's a special uplifting feeling about Midtown Market. It's hard to pinpoint, and even harder to explain, but it's apparent the second you pass through its doors. Maybe it's the classic rock 'n roll music that welcomes you to dance, or the warm smiles from the friendly sales staff who know your name and are truly thrilled to see you. Or maybe it's the avant-garde collection of goodies too numerous to mention. Whatever that unexpected feeling is—Midtown Market has it in spades. Every nook and cranny of the shop is filled with carefully selected gift items and home furnishings by owner and interior designer, Susan Fielstra. "I'm always on the hunt for great things and our inventory literally changes weekly. I had a customer tell me that no matter how short the time is in between visits, the store is always completely different," she says. "I love that." The store sits just off the road next to the Renaissance Square Event Center owned by the Campbell Hotel. The 1940s building was once the welding shop of Ernest Wiemann Iron Works. The original jib crane is still on the ceiling, now a lovely
host to a selection of whimsical chandeliers for sale, as is the concrete floor now refinished with the store's logo and the industrial roll up garage door which allows a flood of delicious light into the space. Recently, Ernest Wiemann's granddaughter visited the store and said her grandfather would be so happy with what she has done with his building. "It's the ultimate compliment we could receive. We are carrying on, his spirit is alive and well," says Fielstra. DISTINCTIVE GIFTS GALORE
Looking for something special? Midtown Market has unique items not available anywhere else in Tulsa. The ever changing stock of items include designer pillows, artwork, jewelry, scarves, antique furniture and must-have mirrors. A self professed "picker" Fielstra makes several trips to market each year and scours vintage shops for one-of-a-kind treasures. She strives to maintain a perfect balance of quality items, from designer exclusives to affordable gift items. "We work really, really hard to keep our prices low," she says. CONTINUED >

Midtown Market carries a huge assortment of Tyler candles in yummy fragrances such as Mediterranean Fig, French Market and Pineapple Crush. Another popular item is CeCe Caldwell's natural chalk and clay paint, which DIYers love for its ability to paint over just about any surface, including plastic and metal. "I've met the nicest people and have the best customers. We have a very loyal following. I don't feel like I ever really work!" she says. DESIGNED FOR SUCCESS
“I’ve always loved this area. It’s interesting that you find yourself exactly where you know you were meant to be.”

Tulsa Lifestyle | November 2015
An interior designer for 20 years, Fielstra started Midtown Market as a side business to her interior design company and drapery work room. She says, "Midtown Market was never strategically planned, it simply evolved. We ended up with some extra square footage at our previous 12th and Harvard location, so I decided to try my hand at retail. I simply fell in love with it. I knew we would eventually outgrow the space." Susan Fielstra and Stacy Turnipseed are the staff designers for the Campbell Hotel. When Fielstra had the opportunity to move into the building near it two years ago, she was all in. "I've always loved this area. It's interesting that you find yourself exactly where you know you were meant to be," she says. In addition to the retail store, Midtown Market houses Susan Fielstra Interiors, Interiors by Stacy (Turnipseed), and Marilyn DallaRosa Interiors—all full service designers providing in-home consultations, custom draperies made on site, blinds, shutters, shades, and accessories. Also in the center of the shop is a fabric library with every color and pattern imaginable for draperies and furniture.

THE NEW CHERRY STREET
Eleventh street, aka historic Route 66, is being hailed as Tulsa's next urban hot spot. Developers are taking advantage of rundown real estate and are renovating with a fervor. Well known buildings like the Tulsa Brake & Clutch Co. and Speedometer Service Co. are getting a second chance at life. Brightly colored retail shops, trendy eateries, and eclectic locally-owned businesses are popping up everywhere. "Our location is ideal. It's easy to come in and buy a gift for someone, have lunch at Maxwell's on your lunch hour, and get back to work. I am so excited to see people moving in and opening businesses," Fielstra explains. She says "people in the know" are predicting that 11th street is going to be the next Cherry Street. Commercial rent prices are budget friendly, parking is much better, and changes are seen daily. Aaron Meek and Barbara Casey with Group M Investment, Inc. are passionate about progress. They brought the Campbell Hotel back from disrepair and renovated the 11th Street Lofts from an old dry-cleaning shop. Group M recently purchased and
is renovating the Greer buildings at 11th and Rockford into 5-7 new retail spaces. Like Midtown Market, other established businesses on Route 66 are excited about the revitalization of 11th street. El Rancho Grande Mexican Restaurant has been in the same location just west of Utica since 1953. Owner John Walden says, "We like being part of history—it's a storied location. We have people from all over the world stop in as they travel Route 66. We have remained in the same location because our guests know we are here. We have four generations of family members as regular customers." Walden and co-owner, Jeff Walden, have considered expanding for a while, but now feel like it is the right time to do it. They are renovating their second floor for a cantina and taco bar. Fielstra says that things are moving fast and the area from the University of Tulsa to Peoria Avenue will look completely different in two years. She says, "There is a great energy in this area. You can feel the neighborhood coming back to life. I'm excited to see what the future has in store."

hilip Montgomery needed just one date to fall for his future wife. It didn’t take much longer for the Golden Hurricane first-year head coach to fall for The University of Tulsa football program as well as for the city of Tulsa. “It’s a place where I felt very comfortable,” says Montgomery, also known as Coach Monty. “And when Ashli and I talked, we knew we wanted to finish raising our kids here in Tulsa.” “I’m blown away by the landscape and the beauty,” said Ashli of her new hometown. Nearly 21 years after a homemade spaghetti meal led to the altar eight months later, the native Texans and their two children – Cannon (17), and Maci (15), headed north of the Red River. Both Montgomery children attend

Cascia Hall Preparatory School where Cannon, a junior, is a football player, and Maci, a freshman, is a cheerleader. Last December, Coach Monty was named a head football coach for the first time in his nearly 20-year career, 16 years in which he served with head coach Art Briles during stops at Stephenville High School and the University of Houston. For the last seven seasons, Philip served as offensive coordinator for Briles at Baylor University. “Coach Briles has been a great mentor of mine,” says Coach Monty. Briles' Baylor offense led the nation in scoring with 48.8 points and in total offense with 581.3 yards per game last season. Now, as Coach Monty sets out on his own path, he has created a team philosophy that extends beyond Xs
and Os. His philosophy of hard work, sense of ownership and community has resonated with the team, making it no coincidence that on the heels of a two-win season, the Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 2-0 start. “It’s about us believing in each other and about the guy who plays beside me,” he says. Ashli offers insight into her husband's success. “Philip has done a good job of letting the players know they are valued,” she says. And it’s not just players he values. Former NFL and Golden Hurricane defensive back Nick Graham, now a defensive analyst on Coach Monty's staff, says that when his 5-year-old son Nicholas was preparing for his first day of kindergarten, Coach Monty encouraged him to experience it because, “You only get one first day of school.” Graham explains the Coach's approach: “He encourages a family atmosphere." Coach Monty is a strong believer in the importance of family. “I want our football players not only to see us as football coaches but as husbands and dads--part of a family.” To that end, Philip and his coaches have their families join in with football meals. It allows him time with his own children, something that can be limited due to the demands of the job. “He’s always done a really good job of coming to as many things as he can even if it’s a 10-minute choir practice at lunch if he can’t make the concert,” Ashli says. Philip explains, “I don’t want our children to leave home one day and say, ‘We had a great childhood, but we didn’t see our dad.’” It’s easy to recognize that his sense of family extends beyond his own home and his own team. Resting on his office desk at the TU Case Center is a paper airplane given to him by Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance Adam Davis’ 5-year-old daughter, Maryn. He displays the airplane with as much joy as if it were a championship trophy for the simple reason: “She cared enough to make it, and she cared enough to give it to me.” Along with the university’s commitment to football, Coach Monty also was impressed with the university’s academic reputations and its undergraduate size of 3,000 that make it the smallest in the Football Bowl Subdivision. “You will find out who you are here and who you want to be,” he says. “The type of education you’ll receive, the people you’re going to meet; it’ll carry you throughout your life.” It’s a message Coach Monty conveys to families while on the recruiting trail. “We talk about it with recruits and with their parents,” he says. “You will do a tremendous job on the football field, but you will be a greater part of a community. You are going to sit in class, and the professor will know you; the young lady sitting next to you will know you.” It’s a message well received, as Graham says, “There’s something about him these kids dig.”
“You will find out who you are here and who you want to be.”

A
t the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, programs for November and December have been in the planning stages for months. From the tried-and-true classics such as Tulsa Ballet’s The Nutcracker and American Theatre Company’s A Christmas Carol, to new shows like November’s Broadway offering, A Christmas Story: The Musical, there is an abundance of shows around which to schedule holiday playtime. Even if the program doesn’t relate to one of winter’s religious holidays, families are likely to come together as the year draws to a close to enjoy each other’s company while being entertained. Children’s programming is a big hit at the PAC, and so is Dr. Seuss. The PAC Trust presents The Cat in the Hat, November 6. It’s the story of the dude in the red-and-white-striped hat who shows up on a rainy afternoon at the home of the little girl Sally and her brother to show them a thing or two about fun. Also on November 6, political commentator James Carville delivers the talk “Politics Today and Tomorrow” for Tulsa Town Hall. A concert featuring Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. He appears November 7 in Tulsa as part of his “Never Too Late” tour with special guest Jackie Bristow. Tommy has been playing guitar for five decades and is a showman The Weiss Kaplan Stumpf Trio make its Tulsa PAC debut on November 15 for extraordinaire. It’s about young Ralphie Parker who schemes to get the present of his dreams — a Red Ryder Action Air Rifle BB Gun. The production is brought to Tulsa by Celebrity Attractions. Following several popular productions already this season, Theatre Tulsa stages The Great Gatsby, November 13-22. You may know this classic story about a

Written by the team behind “South Park,” The Book of Mormon has material and explicit language not suitable for children, but, as critics point out, it has a sweet message. This hilarious ninetime Tony-award winning Best Musical is the story of a group of young Mormon missionaries who are assigned to Africa. The PAC Trust presents The Book of Mormon November 17-22. On November 15, The Weiss Kaplan Stumpf Trio will perform for Chamber Music Tulsa, playing new work as well as the classics in their debut concert at the PAC. During the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 20-21, you can enjoy the Deeply Rooted Dance Theater from Chicago, presented by Choregus Productions. Working with choreographers from across the nation, the company performs modern, ballet and African dance with an emphasis on storytelling and universal themes. In December, we have a couple of events that are not necessarily holiday-themed, but they have all the dream-like enchantment that we associate with the season. Theatre Tulsa Family series presents a condensed version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella that is well suited to a younger audience, and with a plot that highlights important lessons for children. The show runs December 1-13. December is bookended by another musical that has the elements of a fairy tale — Disney’s The Beauty and the Beast. This is the spectacular Broadway production, presented by Celebrity Attractions. It plays December 22-23. Area choruses, handbell choirs and soloists join Tulsa Symphony December 5-6 for Home for the Holidays. And then, of course, the PAC is proud to host two shows that are Tulsa classics: American Theatre Company’s A Christmas Carol, playing December 1023 and Tulsa Ballet’s The Nutcracker, December 11-20. We invite you and your family and friends to celebrate the season enjoying heartwarming entertainment at Tulsa’s home to the arts. Nancy Hermann is director of marketing at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

A BLAZE OF GLORY FALL'S BEST FOLIAGE DRIVE
ARTICLE DEBRA LAIZURE | PHOTOGRAPHY JASON WALLACE & PROVIDED
here's a pilgrimage that occurs each year in Oklahoma. When the leaves start to turn, thousands of people embark on a quest to the southeast region of the state to watch a blaze of glory. Yes, we are talking about the Talimena National Scenic Byway. Oklahoma's most renowned fall foliage drive, the Talimena National Scenic Byway invites foliage fans on a 54-mile pathway through the Ouachita National Forest right across the tops of ancient mountains in southeastern Oklahoma. The road twists and turns over the gently rolling Ouachita Mountains with a span of vistas more breathtaking than the last. Frequent scenic turnouts offer travelers the best views over the magnificent blend of autumn hues on the richly forested hills that seem to stretch forever.
FOLIAGE REPORT
There is a sweet spot each year to see the height of color. Foliage in Oklahoma begins to change color in mid-October. Typically, foliage can be viewed at its peak from the last week of October through the first week or two of November. Luckily, the good folks of the Talimena National Scenic Byway Association (TSDA) publish a weekly Foliage Report on their website, TalimenaScenicDrive.com. WHERE TO START
Jason Wallace
So, which end of the drive is the best way to start? Some diehard followers start on the Mena, Arkansas side, but others wouldn't consider starting anywhere but the Talihina, Oklahoma side. It's really a matter of taste," says Mike Doughty, TSDA spokesperson. "There are four points of entry to the park. Starting from Talihina ensures those iconic views everyone talks about, but the drive from Mena has the most gorgeous sunsets. And then there are the entrances in the middle, Oklahoma Hwy 259 intersects the halfway point and Arkansas Hwy 272 leads you straight up to Queen Wilhelmina State Park. It's a great start and a great end whichever route you take." Either way, start early. It takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get there if you drive straight through from Tulsa. a local antique shop and enjoy breakfast at a locally-owned restaurant along the way. Check out Heavener Runestone Park in Heavener, Oklahoma where the Vikings are supposed to have left their mark on a massive boulder more than 1,000 years ago, or explore the caves at Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton, Oklahoma. There are many places to discover along the way so make sure to throw in your hiking boots and pack a picnic. But don't dilly dally too much. The sun goes down early in the fall and you won't want to miss the peak viewing times from the top of the mountains. It technically takes about an hour and 10 minutes to drive, but stopping at the scenic vistas and attractions along the way could take most of the day. STAY A WHILE
Talimena Scenic Drive Association
If you have never been to the Talimena National Scenic Byway, you might consider drinking it in over a day or two. Talimena State Park (StateParks.com/Talihina.html) offers facilities for picnics and camping, RV hookups with electric/water, tent campsites, playground, hiking trails, and a comfort station with showers. Queen Wilhelmina State Park (QueenWilhelmina.com) just completed a $9.6 million dollar renovation and offers guest rooms, private meeting rooms and a restaurant. The park has camping, a miniature railroad, miniature golf, petting zoo and hiking trails. The drive's many gateway cities offer travelers accommodations ranging from quaint bed and breakfasts to national chain hotels. For more information, visit TalimenaScenicDrive.com/Lodging.

COME BACK IN THE SPRING
Talimena Scenic Drive Association
Fall isn't the only time to visit the Talimena National Scenic Byway. It is open all year long except when snow and ice make the drive too dangerous to travel. Doughty says, "Every season is a good time to take the drive. In the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, you'll see so many different birds, animals, and even insects you can't see anywhere else reveling in their own ecosystems. And there's nothing more beautiful than the sparkling winter's frost in the morning. Spring brings a punch of color to the mountains with butterflies and blooms of wildflowers, lavender, and huckleberries. In the summer, it's completely green and perfect for hiking. And then there's the fall..." Visit the Talimena National Scenic Byway this year. To plan your trip, go to TalimenaScenicDrive.com for a treasure trove of information including
