ost of us who have healthy eyesight are extremely attached to our vision, often without being conscious that we are. We depend heavily on our eyes, and yet we rarely give them a second thought…” Rosemary Mahoney (author). In an adorable, modern twist to the world of optometry, LOOK Eyecare and Eyewear, located on Brookside in Tulsa, was founded on the importance of vision years before it was even a thought. Dr. Chris McDaniels and his sister Jennifer Butler were raised by deaf parents. “I quickly understood how special vision is to deaf people. At a young age, I knew this was how I could help and give back,” he says. McDaniels’ dreams were reinforced when he watched his sister being fit for her first pair of glasses at age two.
“Her whole personality changed!" he says. "She loved removing all the ornaments from the Christmas tree because she could finally see them!” After graduating from the Oklahoma College of Optometry in Tahlequah in 2010, McDaniels began his career as clinical professor of optometry for the Cherokee Nation in Bartlesville, Nowata and Vinita. His ultimate goal was to have his own practice. In November of 2014 he successfully opened LOOK Eyecare and Eyewear with his sister by his side. Butler is currently a senior at Northeastern State University where she majors in business administration. The pair has become a force to reckon with. Specializing in medical optometry and cornea/contact lens management, McDaniels has extensive experience in fitting specialty contact lenses and diagnosing and treating ocular health conditions such CONTINUED >

client the businesses' biggest selling point. McDaniels and Butler love what they do and love working together to do it. “We are a family owned business with more than a thousand frames to choose from," says Butler, "and we have a style and price for every budget.” McDaniels has also taken on the role as one of the original founders of the Tulsa Art Deco Museum, which is housed in the stunning lobby of the Philcade Building in the heart of downtown's Deco District. “I’ve always loved Tulsa and wanted to make it a better place," he says. "I’ve always been a fan of Tulsa’s Art Deco Architecture and thought this would be a great way to promote our town.” McDaniels and William Franklin, an artist and owner of Decopolis, a unique gift shop located on Boston, founded the museum as a non-profit almost six years ago and now have several board members and a growing list of volunteers. Supported by private donations, they will host their next Deco Ball in the beautiful Mayo Hotel in September of 2016. McDaniels’ love for art continues to boil over into his career as an optometrist. His attention to details in eye care and his various frames, each being a piece of art in its own right, set a tone of ease, style and character. Our eyes, as they say, are a window to our souls. McDaniels and Butler embody this concept and hope that each of their clients at LOOK Eyecare and Eyeweear leaves feeling appreciated, taken care of and understood.

Pet Safe
CHRISTMAS TIPS ARTICLE TROY MCNAMARA, DVM
I
t’s that special time of the year and of course you want to include your furry pets in the family fun; but please be mindful of special activities and human traditions that are dangerous to our pets.
Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation bit into the electric cord, but in the real world electrocution is no laughing matter. Make sure to keep pets away from all electric appliances, Christmas lights, etc.
O CHRISTMAS TREE, O CHRISTMAS TREE
HOLIDAY SPIRITS
1. Please make sure your tree is pet friendly. Keep it secure so that it can’t fall over. If you like a real Christmas tree, be sure your pets are not allowed to drink the tree water as this may cause stomach/bowel upset. 2. Tinsel can be deadly. This shiny, innocent looking decoration is a kitty magnet; they love to play with and chew this tantalizing and sparkly toy. Unfortunately, when tinsel is ingested (eaten) it can cause a blockage in the stomach and intestines that can be lethal without surgery.
For many, sharing the spirit of the holidays includes getting together with friends and family and having cocktails or wine. Keep a very close eye on your curious cats and daring dogs. Those sweet cocktails (especially those with dairy products) are very attractive to our pets. We see a significant increase in tipsy patients during this time of year.
NO FEAST FOR THE BEASTS
All those holiday family dinners, cookies, candies and treats help make this a great time of year, but our pets can become extremely ill when eating people food. Limit their diet to their normal food and pet specific treats. Especially dangerous is the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is commonly found in candy and gum. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
All the pretty lights require wires. Wires carry electricity. Electricity kills! Sure, it was somewhat comical when the cat in National

POISONOUS PLANTS: MISTLETOE, HOLLY AND POINSETTIAS
All of these are Mother Nature’s natural decorations for this special time of year. However, all three pose risks to our pets and can cause gastrointestinal upset or worse. Cardiac (heart) and renal (kidney) injury is also possible. SILENT NIGHT
For our anxious pets, all the increased activity, noises and visitors (i.e. stranger danger) can make for an absolute nightmarish experience. If you have a stressed-out pet, please contact your family veterinarian to discuss ways to make this time of year fear free. Start by making a quiet zone in your house for the
pets, filled with security toys/blankets. Don’t let lesser known family members or strangers mingle with your pets. Finally, while puppies and kitties do make cute presents….THEY ARE GOING TO GROW UP! Just like raising children, there will be challenging times that you must be ready for; potty-training, chewing up shoes, barking, and clawing furniture are just a few. Thousands of Christmas pets end up homeless or in shelters due to our busy and chaotic lifestyles. Take time before making a big decision like bringing a new pet into your house. Always remember there are beautiful, adoptable pets in shelters and rescue groups that would love a home this season. Adopt, don’t buy! Wishing all of you a Blessed Christmas Season! a day makes.
The steps it took to get from the living room to the dining room left Jim breathless. He was suffering the debilitating symptoms of aortic stenosis. Even after traveling across the country to a nationally recognized clinic, he was told nothing could be done to treat his condition. Jim believed he would spend his remaining years struggling to do anything beyond merely surviving. But, his despair turned to hope after attending a seminar hosted by Oklahoma Heart Institute on TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement). Jim had the minimally-invasive procedure and left the hospital the next day with just a single bandage to cover a small incision – and today, he enjoys a renewed quality of life. Giving Back
Fighting Hunger,
Feeding Hope ARTICLE EILEEN BRADSHAW AND GREG RASKIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
ith the holiday season approaching, most families turn their thoughts to those of joy and gratitude. For those of us at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, we too remain grateful for the generous support of our financial donors and volunteers who help us fulfill our goal of providing food with dignity for all Eastern Oklahomans. This year we have helped so many people. On average we provide 346,000 meals every single week of the year to our neighbors facing hunger; that’s more people every week than would attend the state’s major college football games on a given Saturday. Imagine feeding everyone at Memorial Stadium in Norman, Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, H.A. Chapman Stadium here in Tulsa, and then doing it all over again. Each week of the year, the work remains. For a great many of us, everything seems okay for now, but one small detail can overturn the applecart. An illness or injury that inhibits the productivity of a family member, the necessity of attentive care-giving to another, a child with a disability needs additional assistance or the death of a working family member creates an unexpected burden. Many people already struggling on the margins find themselves just a step away from critical financial chaos, such as a car needed 28

HOW YOU CAN HELP THE COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF EASTERN OKLAHOMA
Donate Funds, Volunteer, Donate Food, Host a Food & Fund Drive, Join the Junior Ambassadors, Seeds of Hope, Spread the Word, Take a Tour or Schedule a Speaker, Attend Community Events. to maintain work requires an unexpected repair. Those who depend on Social Security benefits received no cost of living increase to their benefits this year and yet the costs of many routine items continue to increase. We recently learned of a woman who works as a paraprofessional for one of the Tulsa Public Schools. On her own, she was able to make ends meet. However, circumstances unexpectedly placed four grandchildren in her care. This caregiver was barely surviving before, and now with four additional people relying on her attention, life is even harder. “I can help with homework, I can give the kids a bath, but I can’t create food out of thin air,” she says. This hardworking grandparent now relies on food assistance to keep those dependent children fed, feeling secure and focused on their education. Each faith tradition includes imperatives for remembering and supporting the least of our citizens. We ask each of you to remember that every Oklahoman is worthy of the most basic fundamental necessities; that of nourishment, food, and life. As we gather to celebrate and offer gifts to one another, imagine how appreciated the gift of food to someone suffering hunger would make. Our annual Fill the Plate campaign provides the ability to leverage new and increased gifts to the Food Bank with a matching grant--up to $150,000-- from the George Kaiser Family Foundation. With the Food Bank’s ability to leverage four meals from one donated dollar, that is 600,000 additional meals with this single campaign. The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma wishes a holiday season filled with bounty, goodness, family, friends, health and joy to everyone in the metro area. We appreciate your help in lifting up those who struggle to secure their next meal.

Castle Christmas CELEBRATE THE BEST OF FAMILY TRADITIONS ARTICLE BROOKE PASSMORE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he holiday season paints a swirl of nostalgic memories for all ages around Oklahoma. The fondest Christmas memories are sparked by family traditions that are a must during those fast-paced days of December. A holiday tradition that countless families partake in each year is visiting Oklahoma’s famous Castle of Muskogee, better known around the holidays as Castle Christmas. Jeff Hiller, the owner of Castle of Muskogee, is quite the family man and thinks Christmas should be all about spending time with loved ones. As a way of bringing people together during the season of good tidings, the Castle of Muskogee is transformed into a wintery retreat that every family can experience and enjoy.
Castle Christmas is decorated both inside and out and from top to bottom in classic holiday décor. Visitors can journey inside its stone walls and participate in fun activities like making candles, sand-art or ornaments to hang up on their Christmas trees at home. Kids are able to tour Santa’s workshop and talk to Santa’s elves before meeting Father Christmas himself. Guests will also have the chance to meet iconic holiday characters throughout different parts of the castle. And if families just want to sit and have a break from the holiday shopping and traffic, they can relax in front of the fireplace and watch a fun, family Christmas movie as they enjoy a cup of delicious hot cocoa. Families can fill their bellies in the castle’s café, where they can eat soups and sandwiches or indulge in Christmas treats straight from CONTINUED >

the bakery’s oven. Before leaving the castle, visitors are welcome to stop by the gift shop, which sells a unique assortment of Christmas items ranging from light sculptures, trees and one of a kind decorations, all sold at a great value that will make any Grinch feel festive. The castle's biggest attraction is the bright spectacle of Castleton Village, where kids of all ages can ride ponies outside its festive buildings. In order to see more nighttime holiday displays, families can drive through the twinkling lights and sights of Castleton Village. To explore a different route away from the cars, visitors can hop on a tractor-drawn hayride that will take them through the village's thousands of lights and Christmas inflatables. After experiencing the drive through Castleton Village, families can follow the signs to the Garden of Lights, which is only a few minutes away from the Castle of Muskogee, to see even more stunning Christmas displays. The Castle Christmas drive-through is open Thanksgiving evening to New Year’s Eve night. The inside of the castle will be open to the public every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until December 17th, then will be open every day for the rest of the month from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. So, to be as jolly as Old Saint Nick, travel up to the Castle of Muskogee’s Castle Christmas, where families come together to appreciate the most wonderful time of the year.

They cry and sob and throw occasional tantrums, and then a few minutes later they’re laughing again. They don’t hang onto yesterday or worry too much about next week. I want a little more of all of that in my life. So, I’ve been watching and listening to my girls and learning from them. I realized that the key to success that we adults are endlessly searching for is really quite simple. It’s joy. That is, to exist as joy-filled beings and seek out and extract joy from every situation life throws our way–to be more childlike (not childish) in everything we do. I’m pretty sure all of us understood this when we were kids, but we’ve long forgotten what it’s like to live in the childlike present. A couple of years ago in January my then 5-year-old daughter announced, “This is going to be a cool year!” And do you know what? She ended up having a cool year. In fact, she had an awesome year. And do you know why? She decided to have a cool year. She chose to make it an awesome year. And it really is that easy. Joy is a choice. It’s not simple, but easy.

Despite the loss of a job or a loved one…despite failing health or an expanding waistline or (in my case) thinning hair…despite our circumstances, we can still opt for joy. It’s always there for us to choose or not to choose. We know this is true because we’ve all seen it and heard it in stories of those who overcome tragedy and monumental setbacks. It takes strength of character and a full-throated child-like spirit. So, this year, if you see me riding on the back of a cart in the grocery store parking lot, or singing out loud on the street, or dancing in a fountain, please join me.
