Food and Romance. If you were to ask a number of people what romance was, you would receive a number a various replies. We all have our perception and all of them are correct. Romance defined is a 'feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love' or 'a quality or feeling of mystery, excitement, and remoteness from everyday life.' It's a feeling. I suppose it depends on what stage of life you're at but for the majority of my years, I've associated romance with food. Cooking or baking together, enjoying a good meal, having dessert with a cup of coffee, or just having some sliced fruit with sharp cheese and a good bottle of wine are some examples that come to mind. While you're relaxing and enjoying your food, you're spending time together, laughing, talking, getting to know each other a little better or sharing stories. Since Valentines's Day is in February it lends itself to talk about romance but Valentine’s Day is also the second busiest night of the year for restaurants. We have some great tips on planning your romantic evening from the best in Tulsa. We also wrote about a local boutique hotel with lots of history and gorgeous, romantic guest rooms that you may enjoy for a mini getaway or consider if you have out of town guests. If you decide traveling to a different country is more romantic, there's a wonderful article on Curacao. Feeling good about yourself is an important factor in the romance category. There's a very informative article about the various types of procedures that could make a huge difference for your self-esteem and confidence. And finally, you may feel really young, when you read about the Kinsgston Trio who will perform a tribute to Woody Guthrie on February 16th at the historic Will Rogers High School Auditorium. Do you remember where you were when you first sang or heard This Land Is Your Land or Where Have all the Flowers Gone? If you're not familiar with these songs then you're young enough to enjoy a romantic dinner and dance the night away. If you do know these songs, you're old enough to have a wonderful romantic dinner and dance the night away. Happy Valentine’s Day, Happy February.

Kingston Trio to Perform ‘A Tribute to Woody Guthrie’ ARTICLE RICHARD B. RISK, JR. ('59), JD / PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he Kingston Trio, the American folk and pop music group that launched the folk revival of the late ‘50s, will present “A Tribute to Woody Guthrie” at the historic Will Rogers High School Auditorium, 3909 E. 5th Place, on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., benefiting the students. Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, born in Okemah, Oklahoma, in 1912, was an American singer-songwriter and musician whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works. Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl period of the Great Depression when he traveled with displaced farmers who migrated from Oklahoma to California on U.S. Route 66, known as ‘The Mother Road,’ and learned their traditional folk and blues songs, earning him the nickname the ‘Dust Bowl Troubadour.’ Guthrie’s best-known song, "This Land Is Your Land,” was released by the Kingston Trio on its Goin’ Places album in 1961, remaining on the Billboard Top 40 album chart for 41 weeks. Arguably, The Kingston Trio was the most influential in Woody Guthrie’s popularity resurgence, once having four albums in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time. This influence is currently being recognized by the exhibit, “Hard Travelin’: Woody Guthrie, The Kingston Trio and the Folk Revival,” at the Woody Guthrie Center, located at 102 East Brady St. Guthrie died in 1967, a household name, thanks largely to the Kingston Trio. The exhibit will be on display through March 13 and will then travel to the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles.

The current trio, comprised of George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty, with Paul Gabrielson on acoustic bass, is as accomplished as any prior composition of the group. Zorn first joined the trio almost 43 years ago, although he left for a while and then rejoined them. year. Bob Shane, the only surviving original member, still wields a guiding hand to ensure the trio stays true to its traditions, and even performs with them on occasions. The trio will perform several Guthrie songs they made famous, including “This Land Is Your Land,” “Pastures of Plenty,” and “Deportee.” They will also treat the audience to other signature songs such as the 1958 hit that established their career, “Tom Dooley,” plus “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “M.T.A.,” and “Scotch and Soda.” Will Rogers High School was completed in 1939 during the Great Depression as a Public Works Administration (PWA) project. This Art Deco masterpiece is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its balconied auditorium resembles a luxury theater, seating 1,400. The balconied auditorium resembles a luxury theater, seating 1,400. The elaborate stage is curved and fluted with brass onsets of a fan and a floral design in terracotta red, brass, gold leaf and tan. Brass lights and false balconies add to the theatrical atmosphere. The plaster ceiling is ornate, decorated with painted, cast plaster beams. Dominating the west wall of the auditorium is a mural. The John Greenleaf Whittier verse about westward expansion is illustrated with figures of pioneers and Indians. The Kingston Trio’s appearance at the school is believed to be one of the first—if not the first—musical concerts at that venue by a group of this stature that is open to the public. All proceeds from the concert will go to the Will Rogers High School Community Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity. All seats are reserved, with prices ranging from $30 to $45 plus a service charge. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLIN ROOHAN

Captivating Curacao 14

I

met Reggie late one night outside of Curacao’s only airport. The air was hot and humid and the competing sound of tree frogs was the only thing I could hear. I was approached by a man with a beaming smile and a blue shirt that read “CURACAO.” He charismatically introduced himself as “Reggie” and let myself and the others know he would be our guide for the duration of the trip. We boarded his van and made our way through Curacao’s dimly lit streets, Reggie honking and waving to people mid-conversation. He asked if we were tired and wanted a coffee or water, then slyly looked back in the rear-view mirror and posed…”or beer?” Little did I know that short ride from the airport to the hotel would set the tone for my whole trip, and little did I know I would get to see a fantastic country through the eyes of such a warm and engaging host.

Tulsa Lifestyle | February 2016

The next day we took a walking tour around Curacao’s capital city, Willemstad, a colorful and bustling city located along the Caribbean Sea. The cafe culture of Europe certainly made its way to Curacao; the bistros around Willemstad were full of tourists and locals alike sipping espressos and people-watching while the sound of reggae music from street buskers vibrated between the buildings. We went by the floating market where fisherman and vendors from Curacao and neighboring Venezuela tie up their boats to sell fish and exotic produce, as well as hand carved African influenced masks and vibrantly painted artworks. The tour of Willemstad ended at Plasa Bieu, an open-air market with numerous vendors serving up savory meals and sweet snacks, like cactus and barley soup, or the island’s famous pumpkin pancakes. Curacao, like most Caribbean islands, is known for its natural beauty. The island’s highest peak, Mount Christoffel was on our itinerary for the following morning. Upon arriving we were greeted by our tour guide, a park ranger, who had a peculiar sense of humor and a dry tone, leaving half the group wondering if his anecdotes about the park were fact or fiction. During the tour he pierced his

hand with a barb to show us how sharp the local cacti were and told us about the time he met Arnold Schwarzenegger. The park was beautiful and our tour took us up rocky roads, toward the peak, in an old Toyota 4X4, our guide’s maniacal laugh spilling out of the windows with every acceleration. We left the park and drove west to Playa Knip, a gorgeous, quaint beach frequented by locals. Upon arriving, we stumbled into a small snack stall where a woman was selling fragrant cheese empanadas and aqua de coco, and we immediately knew where we would purchase lunch. We loaded up on the delightful fare and headed down to the powdery sand to discover families laughing and splashing together in the crystal clear waters and others simply relaxing under a palm hut, cold beverage in hand. My personal plan was to rejuvenate my muscles and rear-end after the bumpy ride on the 4x4’s rigid bench seating, by way of cool ocean water and warm tropical sun. The calm rhythmic waves were the icing on the cake! As our trip was coming to a close, Reggie suggested we try a delicious local restaurant called the Seaside Terrace, a charming CONTINUED >

little open-air restaurant with a great view of the beach, Playa Marie Pampoen. The owner who was very excited to have us met us by the van. He took our drink orders (I had a tangy, freshly made tamarind juice) and told us which seafood was freshest that day and the available sides. Some opted for the popular Lion Fish, but I chose a vegetarian option akin to red beans and rice with fried plantains. The food was good, but the atmosphere was great! I found myself getting up twice to walk around and take pictures. There were local families cooking on beachside BBQ grills and vacationers from Venezuela enjoying their neighbor’s attractions. I had a special encounter with two young men performing wheelies on their bikes while masterfully navigating a nearby jetty. We laughed and made numerous attempts to get the photo just right, trying not to harm any bystanders in the process. This truly was a special beach that had such a strong

sense of community, and I promise, anyone who visits will have a true local experience. On our final day we were invited by Reggie to his friend’s house party. These impromptu get-togethers happen throughout the island on Sundays and are generally promoted through word of mouth invitations. We were given a warm reception and after a short time were treated with the comradery of old friends. The people of Curacao have a way of making everyone feel relaxed and welcomed, something I soon won’t forget. I relish the day I can visit with Reggie again - beaming smile, infectious attitude and all.

Plastic Surgery: Shaping Confidence and Self Esteem, Not Just Bodies ARTICLE LORRI LAGORIN / PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

aybe it’s that bikini you’re hoping to fill this year, or maybe you don’t want to be mistaken for your mom. Whatever your reason, if you’re looking to make a change in your appearance, Dr. Greg Ratliff and Dr. Brenda Schiesel at Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa are exactly who you need to help you bring out that confident, self-assured person you always knew was there! And really... that’s what plastic surgery is all about. “Having plastic surgery is something that most patients enter into after much consideration,” says Dr. Ratliff. “Our patients come to us because there is something about their physical appearance that they want to improve -- something that has always held them back or made them feel insecure.” Today, the options available are as varied and unique as the patients themselves. “It’s about understanding exactly what the patient is trying to accomplish,” says Dr. Schiesel, “and coming up with a treatment plan that not only meets those needs, but gives them results they never really thought were achievable.”

mentation (augmentation mammoplasty), breast lift (mastopexy), or a combination of the two. Dr. Ratliff has long been recognized for great breast enhancement results. He has completed over 6,000 successful breast augmentations. The practice offers saline, silicone, and shaped silicone implants. The shaped implants are highly-cohesive silicone

gel to offer shape retention, leak resistance, and the most natural appearance. “Part of our job is to evaluate the patient and make recommendations that

will help them achieve the look they desire. For example, can they get what they want with just an implant or do they also need a lift? What treatment plan is going to be the most successful for them?” says Dr. Ratliff. On the other end of the spectrum, some women seek consultation for breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty). Large breasts can cause back and neck issues. They are also the culprits for many women to be self-conscious and insecure about their appearances. This surgery removes fat and excess skin from the breasts, reshaping the breast into a smaller, natural-looking breast. “Breast procedures can make an enormous difference in a woman’s confidence. It’s amazing to see how they light up when they attain the look they have desired for so long,” says Dr. Schiesel. “It really can change their lives.” FACE

A woman is more than just a pretty face, but many women want their outward appearance to match the way they feel inside. Even minimally invasive procedures can make a woman feel years younger. “The face is such an important part of how a person feels about themselves and how they believe the world sees them. Giving

people options, such as a facelift or eyelid lift, can help them regain a youthful appearance and make all the difference in the world to someone who feels they look older than their actual age,” says Dr. Schiesel. There are also less invasive alternatives that can be explored; for example, BOTOX®, Restylane®, Juvéderm®, Sculptra®, and other injectables help to give your face a more youthful appearance by smoothing out wrinkles and adding fullness. Recovery time from these types of procedures is minimal, and the positive results can last for months and even years. Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa continues to be at the forefront in offering quality services in this area. Because Dr. Ratliff and Dr. Schiesel are fully trained plastic surgeons, they can evaluate new treatments as they come to the market and only adopt those that offer real results. In addition, staff members are trained and certified to ensure the practice offers the latest technology and the highest quality care to patients. BODY CONTOURING

tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). There are different types of tummy tucks, ranging from a skin-only tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck, and an extended tummy tuck. In each of these options, fat and excess skin is removed and connective tissues may be tightened to give your body a more toned appearance. “In each of these surgeries, patients see results quickly, and that gives them a confidence boost that translates into all areas of their lives,” says Dr. Ratliff. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with tummy tuck procedures and has been successful in removing excess fat from the hips, buttocks, back, thighs, knees, and upper arms. And for those who aren’t ready to commit to surgery, CoolSculpting®, a noninvasive procedure that freezes fat cells and eliminates them from your body, has proven successful for some patients. It has been highly publicized on national television and in several magazines, with dramatic results. MOMMY MAKEOVERS

Increasingly popular with moms, both young and old, Mommy Makeovers are a combination of procedures that help restore your body closer to the way it was before pregnancy. Typically, the procedures might include three of the following: a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and liposuction. Performing these procedures in a single operating room visit minimizes recovery time for a busy mom. The procedures selected are dependent on your individualized treatment goals. “The Mommy Makeover combination has become popular with mothers who are finished having children, and simply want help getting their bodies back to pre-pregnancy shape,” says Dr. Ratliff, “It can have a dramatic effect on the way these women feel about themselves and their bodies.”

Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa, nestled on historic Cherry Street, provides a tranquil setting for patients. This amazing facility was converted from a residential property into an all-inclusive treatment and surgical facility, under the direction of Medical Director Dr. Greg Ratliff. It provides a comfortable atmosphere that sets patients and their families at ease from the moment they arrive. Easy access from all major area thoroughfares and the airport and ample parking just steps from the door make Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa the choice for area residents, as well as out-of-town guests. The facility offers consultation rooms, a state-of-the-art surgical suite that was recently expanded to include a second operating room and an additional recovery area, and a comfortable waiting area for your family. “Creating an environment where our patients and their families can come for our services and have their initial consultation, examinations, surgery, and follow-up visits all in the same place was extremely important to our practice,” says Dr. Ratliff, who is board certified in Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has been in private practice for nearly 25 years. Dr. Brenda Schiesel joined the practice in the summer of 2015 after spending several years in the Kansas City area. She has made a wonderful addition to the team, which includes our two surgeons, three registered nurses, a certified aesthetic nurse specialist, and medical support staff with specialty training and certifications to ensure your care and experience with Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa is unparalleled.

rimming with history, The Campbell Hotel is a locally owned business located on Route 66, just west of Columbia Avenue on 11th street. It was built in 1927 and was originally named The Casa Loma Hotel. The Campbell Hotel was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places after being painstakingly renovated by Aaron Meek and Barbara Casey. Meek says “We restored everything from the original hardwood floors, transoms over the doors, and all of the windows. It was important to keep it as close to the original hotel as possible.” Clever touches are integrated throughout the hotel starting with the 165” long leather sofa and the old suitcases hanging above it in the lobby. A massive fireplace in the sitting area invites you to sit and relax and a local Tulsa artist painted a beautiful mural in the hallway replicating a trolley car that used to travel 11th Street to Sand Springs. Casey says, "The Campbell Hotel invites you to experience a piece of Tulsa’s history. For example, we used original pie plates from 1905 in the Bama Suite, a nod to our neighbors at Bama Pie Company across the street, and have photos of 1920s and 1930s movie stars in the lobby restrooms." However, some aspects of the hotel had to be changed. "Back then, every two rooms shared a bathroom. There are no worries today. In fact, we have 10 less guest rooms and a lot more bathrooms," Meeks says. "We get a lot of locals on the weekend. A 'Staycation' if you will."

The Campbell Hotel has 26 uniquely decorated rooms. The hotel was chosen for the 2011 Designer Showcase project where several Tulsa designers transformed the entire hotel. Some of the theme based rooms are: The Leon Russell Room (#214) where you will find an incredible headboard made from the top of a grand piano and signed by Leon himself! The Oklahoma Legends Room (#201) has a huge white leather headboard set against black walls and features signed photos of many famous Oklahomans. The Oil Baron’s Room (#225) illustrates the grandeur of the period when Tulsa claimed the title of “Oil Capital of the World” with two black and gold queen four poster beds, chandeliers, skylight and photographs of some of Tulsa’s historic homes. The Renaissance Bridal Suite (#221) features an 18 foot canopy draped around a king size bed in the middle of the room, downtown skyline views, mirrored walls and a custom purple velvet sofa. The bathroom is fabulous with onyx tile, a two person whirlpool tub, and a stand-alone shower with two heads. The Renaissance Suite sets the mood for a perfect wedding night or romantic rendezvous. Planning the Perfect

Valentine Dinner

ARTICLE EVAN WEI-HAAS / PHOTOGRAPHY VALERIE GRANT

L

ove it or hate it, Valentine's Day is at our doorsteps. This is the month of chocolates, flowers, gifts, lovers, and romance. If you’ve never gone through the experience of trying to plan the perfect Valentine’s date night, you may be in for quite a ride. This is the busiest night of the year for restaurants. A night when couples are pitted against each other to see who can get those reservations at their perfect location, and who misses out, often having to compromise with their plans. But fear not, wary lovebirds. We sat down with some of the experts on Valentine’s Day dining—Justin Thompson Restaurants—and picked Proprietor Chef Justin Thompson and Corporate Chef Tim Slavin’s minds on what is most romantic about food as well as some considerations to keep in mind when picking that ideal dinner spot. There are a couple things you have to keep in mind when selecting your perfect location, the first of which is the romance factor of the venue and food. Make sure that the venues will feel special and different to your partner. Do they have views of beautiful buildings?

Proprietor Chef Justin Thompson

Tulsa Lifestyle | February 2016

Are they located in a prime part of downtown? Would he or she prefer to have a romantic meal over wine and French cuisine…Lady and Tramp it over some authentic Italian…a lover’s shared steak? These are all important considerations. We’d recommend somewhere that is near all of the action of Downtown Tulsa, whether that be the Deco District with a romantic stroll through the historic and beautiful skyscrapers and local shops, or in the Blue Dome and Brady District, just a short stroll from museums, galleries, bars, and the always love-inducing Guthrie Green. Justin Thompson shares that when identifying the perfect romantic food, he loves “anything shared with your lover, aphrodisiacs such as oysters,

Corporate Chef Tim Slavin

avocado, bananas, etc. Food is romantic in general because it creates a shared experience with someone else. Everything from feeding each other to cooking together and laughing helps build communication, trust, and love; all of the things that relationships are built upon.” Noting that when he and Tim design Valentine’s Day Prix Fixe menus, these things always come into play. Tim adds that he also loves aromatic foods with lots of herbs and wine that create an aroma and aura to surround the meal and the overall experience. “It ignites more sense than just taste, and helps provide a complete sensual experience through food” he explains. As a restaurant group with three downtown dining concepts including a French restaurant, Italian restaurant (with conjoined caffè & market), and modern Steakhouse, the JTR Group definitely has this holiday of romantic dining on lockdown. “I love how many options we have between the restau-

rants to make sure everyone can get what they enjoy. We have three different concepts with completely different menus and wine lists, so you’re never going to go on a date and you or your date not be able to find something that you would want to eat or drink on the occasion” Tim explains. But it’s more than just variety and location - it’s all about the experience too. When you’re out, you want it to feel special, taken care of, and stress free so that you can focus in on what matters; having that romantic conversation with your date. Justin notes that with this in mind, each of his restaurants offer “Prix Fixe menus so you can come in and tell us to take care of you and we’re going to provide you with the best food and wine experiences we have created so you don’t have to worry about the meal and can focus on time with your loved one. We take all of the work out of it so you can just enjoy being with each other.”

Parting Thoughts

Love Is In The Air WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS

W

ho knew boarding a simple airplane 23 years ago in my blue sweat suit (think ‘80s wear) would change my entire life? Certainly not me, or I might have dressed a bit snappier and put on a smidge of makeup and perfume. But, I had reached that elusive place of peace in my quickly-nearing-explosion biological countdown when I figured if the right guy was to come along, I best relax a bit and calm down. So, calm down I did and donned one of the ugliest outfits I had for sheer comfort. In walks my seatmate for our eight-hour flight and we commence what could be termed as a date – dinner, movie, etc. There were way too many intelligent conversations, laughs and glasses of wine, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up on our trans-Atlantic flight and I didn’t want the fun to end. He was returning home to Germany, and I would eventually return home to Tulsa – worlds apart. He called a week later asking if he could come to visit for Christmas in a couple of weeks. “Sure!” I answered, not knowing how many martinis it would take to enlighten my parents of this impending event. So, I commenced, “I am 29 years old, you have trusted 34

me this long, blah, blah, blah.” Their shock equaled my freak-out. I’d known him for eight hours. When I went to the airport – in a much spiffier outfit – I actually wondered if I would recognize the gentleman who had wooed me weeks before. I had already endured all of the “Are you CRAZY?” comments from friends, so I took my chances that he would at least look familiar. Honeymoon is the word we use for those two weeks of Christmas bliss. Without question, we would end up together, so two years of trans-Atlantic, pre-Internet, large phone bill dating ensued. There were some language and culture barriers to overcome, and fortunately for my non-German speaking self, he was excited to move to the States. We were married two years after meeting, and immediately moved to California for his engineering job. Now, I have to giggle at people with text and Skype who complain about having to endure long distance relationships from New York to Boston. Love at first sight does happen, and sometimes it comes in a big old jumbo jet of a package. We are ready to celebrate our 22nd anniversary and have two wonderful teenagers. Maybe the blue sweat suit wasn’t such a bad choice after all.

the heart of a volunteer. Gene remembers feeling a painful sensation as if someone was grabbing his throat. After his wife called 9-1-1, Gene insisted emergency responders take him to Hillcrest and the cardiologists of Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI). Gene was rushed into an operating room for open-heart surgery. When he woke, his doctor told him it was a miracle he was alive and asked what he planned to do with his new life. In that moment, Gene realized he wanted to be an inspiration to others and began volunteering several days a week at OHI.
