pring is in the air and the outdoors beckons us to enjoy all that nature has to offer. The warmth of the sun encourages new plantings to sprout, mama birds are teaching their young to fly and we are encouraged to plant flowers, take walks, or adventurously take a road trip to visit a land of the unknown. The April issue features eating fresh with Scissor Tail Farms. There is also a feature on how The Farm Shopping Center, originally built in the country and now surrounded by suburbia, maintains its original character. We’ve highlighted a couple of the stores at The Farm that focus on a natural lifestyle. Backwoods has everything the outdoor enthusiast could dream of and Theraganics manufactures natural skin care products right on site.
Enjoy reading about Wink Optique which recently opened in south Tulsa. And last but far from least, April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. Consider supporting the Can Superhero Challenge and CANdlelight Ball, two very worthy causes that need support.

Wink Optique OPENS ITS SECOND LOCATION AT THE SHOPS OF SEVILLE
F
or more than 22 years, Dr. DJ Riner has provided the highest quality vision care to patients in Tulsa. After working as an associate and partner in private optometry practices for 10 years, Riner Eyecare was launched in 2004 at 31st & Mingo. Dr. Riner recently expanded his practice by opening a second location, Wink Optique, located at 101st & Yale in the Shops of Seville. Wink Optique is a full service optometry practice and boutique optical including eye exams, contact lenses, and a collection of hand curated eyewear. Each eyewear line has been carefully selected to provide the highest in quality craftsmanship and unique design while also detailing a philosophy of giving back. For every frame purchased, MODO Eyewear donates a frame to people in need through their “Buy a Frame Give a Frame” program. They work in cooperation with Optometry Giving Sight to provide eyewear, eye exams, and proper eye care to those in need. Through the ECO Kids collection “One Frame One Tree” program, more than one million trees have been planted in Cameroon, Africa. ECO works in partnership with Trees for the Future to donate and plant a tree for every frame sold. Wink Optique is thrilled to carry SALT Optics (Sea Air Land Timeless). Each year, SALT Optics hosts an art show in New York City called SEESALT. Commissioned photography works are displayed and sold. The proceeds from the show benefit Charity Water, whose mission is providing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. These and many other carefully chosen eyewear lines are all part of the philosophy that makes Wink Optique a truly special experience. From the beautiful and peaceful shopping environment designed to highlight the unique features of each piece of eyewear, to the state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, Wink Optique is committed to excellence, building relationships, and sharing stories. The Riner family is committed to living a life focused on serving others. This philosophy of giving back begins in their home and finds its expression overflowing into their professional lives. Dr. Riner and his wife, Lori, have four children ranging in age from 7 to 22. To learn more about Wink Optique, call 918.417.7774, visit WinkOptique.com, or stop by their store at 101st & Yale. ohn Sulton and Rob Walenta are Tulsa farmers, but not in the traditional sense. They are entrepreneurs who are growing high quality lettuces and leafy greens utilizing aeroponic technology. Their farm is a 26,000 square foot greenhouse in West Tulsa and their fields include a series of vertical tower gardens with no soil. CONTINUED >

FRESH GREENS (CON TI N U ED)
Aeroponics is a growing method by which plants are grown in a tightly controlled environment without soil and very little water. This eliminates the use of traditional fertilizers such as animal manure which has been identified as a source of E. coli and other diseases. The way aeroponics works is that plants are cultivated in vertical growing towers and their roots are fed with a nutrient rich water solution that circulates through the system. Because of this process, food crops grow faster than they would in soil. It takes between six to eight weeks to grow lettuces while herbs take two to three months to mature. CEO and co-founder John Sulton says, “We have been farming locally grown, chemical and manure-free leafy greens for our community for the past two years. The aeroponic technology we use minimizes our environmental impact and preserves water as compared to traditional growing methods. We can grow produce yearround which eliminates the need for local chefs and distributors to order and ship in produce from other locations during non-growing months. The produce from our farms reaches your table faster and has a longer shelf life due to reduced time spent in shipping.” Sulton’s partner and COO, Rob Walenta, says “The controlled environment of the greenhouse protects the plants from uncontrollable outside elements such as adverse weather conditions and insects. We are able to provide the freshest produce possible.” In fact, Scissortail utilizes a food safety system and has been audited by a third party for purity from seed to finished product. “When we were searching for a business idea to pursue, we came across the hydroponic farm featured at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida,” said Sulton. “We liked the idea that the product is sustainable, local and could provide consumers with same-day freshness.” Before creating Scissortail Farms, both Sulton and Walenta were working in non-agriculture jobs. Sulton was an aerospace engineer in Tulsa at NORDAM and Walenta was a project manager in Tulsa at KMO Development Group Inc. “We started the business because we saw an opportunity to make a big difference in the community 18

and to be involved with something that can have a positive impact on all involved, says Sulton. “We knew we could help with supply and demand issues associated with produce for chefs who are often limited to what can be grown locally during specific seasons.” The duo originally met attending school at Cascia Hall Preparatory School in Tulsa, and remained friends through their college and professional careers. Both partners are involved in the community and with area schools and children. “We participate in as many school events as possible to be involved with the students. It is great that they have an opportunity at such a young age to learn about where their food comes from,” said Walenta. What’s in the future of Scissortail Farms? They plan on expanding capacity in their current greenhouse and can build additional buildings as needed. They are currently testing vine plants which have different growing requirements. Scissortail products are currently sold through retail outlets including Reasor’s and Oklahoma Food Coop; Tulsa restaurants including Doc’s, Stonehorse Café’, Tallgrass Prairie Table, La Villa at Philbrook and East Village Bohemian Pizza; and distributors including Freshpoint, GoFresh, Tankersley and Urban Agrarian which services restaurants, hotels, hospitals and schools. Products can “Scissortail Farms greens are also be ordered directly from available locally at Reasor’s Scissortail Farms by emailing and at select Tulsa restaurants them through their website including Stonehorse Café’, at ScissortailFarms.com. was aptly named as the property was originally a working farm. All the buildings, designed around the over 100 year old original barn, were built with a farm theme...down to the storefront windows, doors and silos. While some of these design elements have been replaced over the years, many have been kept intact in order to maintain the integrity of the original design. In 1977, when Murray McCune passed away unexpectedly, his wife Gloria McCune took over the responsibility of managing the shopping center. She was an active and proud supporter of the greater Tulsa community.

fter over 40 years, The Farm Shopping Center continues to bring Tulsan’s a unique group of stores to make their shopping and dining experience unlike any other. This family owned shopping center has a lot of history behind it. Its current owner, Patricia McCune Clark, is the daughter of architect M. Murray McCune who built The Farm in 1971. One of only two theme centers at that time, The Farm Shopping Center was designed and developed by Tulsa’s highly respected McCune, McCune & Associates. Murray McCune and his father, Malcolm L. McCune, were responsible for the design of several other notable Tulsa properties such as Utica Square Shopping Center, Tulsa University and an addition to Boston Avenue Methodist Church. stresses the importance of giving back in our community. In addition to helping out many local charitable organizations through her work at The Farm, she is a very strong supporter of “shop small, shop local”. Over half of The Farm’s shops are owned by lifelong Tulsan’s. About 30% of the current tenants have been with The Farm since its inception. The Farm, like Tulsa itself, offers sophisticated city appeal with a comfortable hometown feeling. It truly is “The Only Country in Town!” The Farm consists of 157,000 square feet of retail space with an additional 20,000 square feet devoted to The Farm Office Building, located at the south end of the shopping center. The Farm has over 40 specialty shops, restaurants and service businesses with convenient curbside parking to accommodate Tulsan’s in a park-like setting. This tree lined property, situated in mid-town Tulsa, is filled with mature trees, f lowers, decorative farm implements and benches…a perfect place to take a stroll or relax at one their many fine eateries.
The Farm is a natural fit for such local businesses as STG Gelateria, owned and operated by Jim and Mike Bausch who also own Andolini's Pizzeria. The gelato is made right here on the premises in state of the art equipment shipped overseas from Italy...it's fresh and authentic. Not sure what gelato is? Italian ice cream! What's the difference between American ice cream and Italian ice cream? Gelato is creamier, smoother, silkier and denser...and best of all, it's healthier! Why you ask? Because it uses more milk and less cream and doesn't use egg yolks. Not only healthier...but fewer calories. And they have a huge variety of flavors...all your favorites and perhaps a few you've never heard of. Great Harvest Bread Co. is another natural fit for The Farm. Recently purchased by Amy & Nick Smith, the bakery has been a staple at The Farm since 2002. They buy all their whole grain wheat from Montana and mill it right in their store…daily! It doesn’t get any fresher or healthier than that. They offer their healthy, freshly baked breads and goodies 6 days a week. THERAGANICS WITH JENNIFER ROUDABUSH TL: IS THE BUSINESS LOCALLY OWNED? JENNIFER: Theraganics is a unique business that is locally owned and operated.
TL: WHO ARE THE OWNERS? JENNIFER: Born and raised Tulsa area sisters Stephanie Roudabush & Jennifer Roudabush.
TL: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? AT THIS LOCATION? JENNIFER: Theraganics was founded in 2008 (8 years) and has been at the Farm Shopping Center since 2011 (5 years).
TL: DOES YOUR BUSINESS HAVE A STATED MISSION STATEMENT? JENNIFER: Theraganics’ mission is to create truly luxurious and effective, purposeful, and fresh natural skin care products using the best ingredients.
TL: IS THERE A REASON THE BUSINESS WAS STARTED? JENNIFER: Theraganics was started for two reasons. Firstly, founder Stephanie was plagued by skin issues for most of her teenage and adult life. After much trial and error with products on the market, she decided there had to be a better and healthier way. Starting small in her kitchen at home, she carefully studied the chemistry of cosmetic and skin care manufacturing. She formulated and created 24

a few products to start with, selling them at local events and quickly gained a following as people were experiencing the benefits of using her handcrafted products. Her sister Jennifer had a son in 2005, Luke, who was diagnosed with autism. He was overly sensitive to commercial bath products due to the ingredients and fragrances. The sisters found that Luke was able to tolerate the natural products amazingly well, making everyone’s lives much happier and healthier. TL: WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO? JENNIFER: Theraganics formulates and manufactures (using handcrafting methods) natural and purposeful skin care, bath, and essential oil based products for the health conscious consumer using the best ingredients.
TL: WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER AND MANUFACTURE?
Theraganics offers a plethora of products ranging from natural bar and liquid soaps, lotions, creams, and facial care to lip balm, bath salts, bath bombs, hair care (shampoo + conditioner), and essential oil based aromatherapy products. JENNIFER:
TL: WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCT?
Our most popular product has been our Detox Charcoal Soap Bar. It has proven effective for acne or breakout prone skin, along with many people finding that it is useful for deodorizing, micro-exfoliating, bug repelling, and so much more. It can be used as a facial and body bar, and has a tremendous lather that is both luxurious and refreshing. It uses a combination of essential oils, clay, and activated

carbon to gently yet effectively cleanse the skin and remove impurities. It has been our best-selling product since its inception. TL: WHAT PRODUCT COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? JENNIFER: We could not live without the Detox Charcoal Bar Soap and our super hydrating lip balms. They are essentials and some of our best formulations.
TL: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Our business is unique in that we formulate, make, and sell our own products in the same place. They are made from scratch, and the products you buy have been handcrafted from start to finish. Our formulations are very unique and this allows our products to truly be “FRESH”. It is likely the person you are speaking to and buying from is one of the people who created your product and therefore has a significant knowledge of it. JENNIFER:
TL: WHAT IMPORTANT FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO THE BUSINESS’S SUCCESS? JENNIFER: Theraganics has been successful due to a number of things including perseverance and effective products, but one of the most important is our wonderful customers and the support we receive from them. If it weren’t for them, we would not be in business today.
TL: DO YOU OFFER OTHER SERVICES? JENNIFER: We have toyed with the idea of offering classes on making
your own soap and cosmetics.
TL: DO YOU MANUFACTURE UNDER PRIVATE LABELS? JENNIFER: Yes
we do private labeling.
TL: DOES YOUR COMPANY HELP THE COMMUNITY WHERE IT IS LOCATED? JENNIFER: We have donated to the Autism Center of Tulsa as well as giving extra products to local women’s and children’s shelters.
TL: WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT OF OWNING THIS BUSINESS? JENNIFER: Any time a customer gives us positive feedback about how
one of our products have helped their life, it is a proud moment.
TL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR STARTING OUT TODAY? JENNIFER: The best advice for a young entrepreneur would be to believe in what you do. It makes the day to day challenges easier to overcome, and it provides fuel to keep going.

YOU CAN HELP CHILDREN ARTICLE BRANDI MOORE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ne in 14 children in Tulsa County was involved in a child abuse investigation last year. This number is startling but true. The Child Abuse Network’s (CAN) professionals and volunteers believe there is hope for every child. Staff members work with each child, one at a time, to ease the pain, stop the hurt and begin the healing process. Each year the number of children coming to CAN for services following abuse allegations steadily increases; CAN has served on average 50 children a week for the past three years. As the need for CAN’s services continues to grow the staff continues to provide top quality service for every child. Last year, CAN served 2,425 children. There is no socioeconomic boundary; child abuse is reported in every zip code in the Tulsa community. CAN exists to reduce the trauma a child abuse investigation can pose for the child. CAN works with each child during initial stages of investigation by addressing their basic need for a safe environment. Children receive collaborative intervention services including interviews, medical exams, case reviews and mental health consultations, all done at CAN’s Children’s Advocacy Center, one place with one team working together to help the child. A glamorous evening filled with fun and entertainment will benefit CAN at the CANdlelight Ball on April 23. The 2016 event marks the fifth anniversary of the CANdlelight Ball, which has raised over a million dollars to support more than 7,484 children in the last four years. 34
