Summer is full of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind. Some of our favorite summers are often not filled with constant activities but are rather of a slower pace and simple moments we enjoy with others. It can be so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the laidback pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. For me, I love going to Ava’s softball and PJ’s baseball games. Seeing them do things in a game that we practiced on the field at home gives them (and me) a great feeling of pride. On top of that, I love the summer softball league I play in, it’s my way of being a kid again. In this issue, climb aboard as we take you out on the water and set sail as the wind blows your stress away. Want some more downtime? How about exploring the drive-in movie theater with us or kicking back with some friends around your firepit, now that we are showing you two of the easiest methods for building your fire. While you’re out there, why don’t you grill up some pineapple- we've got just the recipe for you (mahalo, Ed Nazarko). We pride ourselves on connecting you to the “lights” of the community. To those who shine and whose light brightens the lives around them. That couldn’t be more true than for the focus of our “Mr. Sunshine” Article…Joe Rude. Get to know him, he’s worth it. I want to urge you all to pay attention to a special event happening on July 29th at Essex Valley School. Yes, it is a special night featuring the comedic/magical genius of Simon Mandal but more importantly, you and that magical night will help change the paths and lives of many children. I hope to see you there! Enjoy some of the many things our cities offer during these hot days of summer and make memories with those around you that you love.

AGAINST THE GRAIN How one man carves some time out for himself

ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON SEAMAN

Dave Knapp is your typical suburban dad. As most “typical suburban dads” tend to do, he’s built a few guitars and things. Wait — that’s not typical? Well, maybe Dave’s not so typical after all. “I have a problem,” he jokes. “It’s my outlet. I wonder if I can build something, so I just find a way to do it. Sometimes they just fall into my lap.” It was kismet when he built his first guitar. He’d always wanted to try it, and when someone gave him a huge woodworking equipment catalog, inside there was a special section about how to build a guitar; almost as if the universe was sending him a message. Meanwhile, someone gave him a rough piece of wood that he’d imagined could be for a guitar. Nature took its course, and that just fueled his fire. “I also had this crazy idea that I wanted to try to build my own boat. So now I have my own custom paddleboard hanging in my garage. I guess it’s the curse of living at a lake.” That lake is now featured inlaid on his cornhole board, complete with LED lights around the border for nighttime playing. “Unless you live in Packanack, you probably won’t know what the heck it is,” he admits. His wife Alison is reportedly supportive of Dave’s projects, especially when he decided one day to install an outdoor shower for their four young swimmers. “I learned a pretty big lesson that day — never work barefoot.”

THE DR I V E-IN EX PER IENCE THE WARWICK DRIVE-IN SERVES UP CINEMATIC NOSTALGIA

Chances are, you spent at least a night or two of your childhood lying in the back of your parent's station wagon watching a movie at a drive-in theater. At one point, there were nearly 4,000 drive-in theaters across the US. They’re far harder to find these days, but they are still around — technologically updated for the modern age but still bringing a nostalgic vibe. One such theater is still in operation in nearby Warwick, NY. Today’s drive-in has upgraded their video to all-digital, replaced the tiny speaker hung on the side of the window with a high-quality signal played through the car radio, and features multiple screens playing current releases. Sure, you have other options now for taking in a movie. Whether it’s at a luxury theater with heated reclining seats and dinner options or simply at home on your ultra HD screen, you don’t have to make much effort for your cinematic viewing. Yet there’s something unique about the drive-in that is hard to understand unless you’ve done it. It’s old-time Americana, even if the station wagon has been replaced by a minivan, SUV, or Tesla. The drive to Warwick isn’t particularly long (only about 45 minutes). Why not make it a retro night of a movie under the stars, snacking on some popcorn and maybe sipping on a Yoo-Hoo? A trip back in time to a forgotten age will be an experience you’ll always remember.

MR. SUNSHINE! ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP BARONE

THE MAN WHO TRULY BRINGS LIGHT TO THE COMMUNITY.

It all started with a house fire. Longtime Packanack resident, Joe Rude, came home late at night after spending a few hours in the ER from an injury suffered while working on a project at home. There was a fire spreading outside his home as his wife Paulette and four kids slept inside. He was fortunate to have gotten them all out, but they lost everything else. After their house was decimated, Joe got a call from one of his neighbors, a contractor (Rod Donnelly from Donnelly Construction). He had a house available for them to use as they righted themselves and rebuilt their lives. “We’re going to make it all green,” Rod told him. “I don’t care what color you’re going to paint it…” Joe responded. “No, no — we’re going to put solar on it, do geothermal, that sort of thing.” Extenuating circumstances led them to not taking him up on the offer, but a seed was planted. As a Wayne police officer, Joe was well aware of the support that existed in town, but he’d never experienced it quite like he did that day. His affable nature and habit of always putting his community first assured that people would rally around the family. And honestly, his son, Garrett, might be even more wellknown in the neighborhood than Joe. A special-needs child with Down’s Syndrome, Garrett is captivating. Because of their family situation, the Rudes have to consider everything that goes into their

18

O UR TOWN | HOM E + D ESI GN

home, including adding solar to help reduce their expenses. He’d recently retired from the police force, so Joe started looking into his own personal development as he transitioned into his next career. Kismet took over, and he’d found himself in touch with a company that planned to put solar on two million homes by 2025. The stars were aligning to make solar his next career. Taking this path led to Joe founding his own solar franchise, PaneltheEarth, LLC (paneltheearth. com). He works with homeowners and local businesses to reclaim their own energy narrative and live more sustainably. And as costs begin to mount in the face of rapid inflation, adopting solar for your home isn’t just saving the green of the planet — it can help to save the green in your wallet. Ultimately, Joe would like to expand his business to the point where he can dedicate more of the focus to special needs families like his own. Much like his Wayne community, the special needs community is near and dear to the entire Rude family. They’re intimately aware of all the challenges that these people face on a daily basis. With his solar business, Joe feels as though he’s found a valuable way to help them — and anyone who’s interested — bring a little sunshine into their lives. And really, what better partner can you have than the biggest source of energy in our solar system?

sailing away

THERE'S NOT HING LIKE TIME ON A BOAT TO RELAX, COMPETE, OR JUST FIND YOUR CENTER

ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / WAY N E

23

In April's "Explore" issue, we had a quick teaser about sailing as a local adventure. Because of the number of positive responses we had to that piece, we wanted to bring you a more in-depth feature on the sport of sailing. According to local surgeon, Gary Nackman, sailing can be anything you want it to be. Typically, it’s a time for a gentle cruise, either on a lake, a river, or the ocean. It can also be competitive — for those so inclined, there are sailing races that can really pump up your adrenaline. “It can be as simple as going out on a Sunfish enjoying the great outdoors,” says Dr. Nackman. “It’s a way to travel and be independent. I’m getting ready to do a race that we do every year, from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda.” He’s been sailing his entire life. “I’ve actually been sailing since before I was born. My mother was pregnant with me on their boat. As a kid, my dad would be lying on the beach in Brooklyn, seeing the sailboats out there and always swore that one day, that’s what he would do.” “For camaraderie, it’s a wonderful experience. It’s a great community of sailors. You could see someone wearing a hat from some regatta that you’d been in and strike up a conversation and two hours go by before you finish that conversation.” Jen Dalto of Pines Lake, who launched her sailing experience at Packanack, agrees. “I like it because it’s a family sport. It’s a community that can race against each other, the adrenaline and anxiety mixed together, which I love, then you come back and sit with a beer and talk with everyone you just competed against.”

24

M UST SE E | AU TO + M AR INE

Sailing becomes part of your lifestyle. Boats beget boats, as kids who sail with their parents and grandparents often will get a boat of their own one day. “That’s the cool part about it,” Dalto adds. “It’s something that the generations share.” But sailing isn’t just about racing and competition. It’s also a way to find peace, serenity, and an escape from the grind. Jeff Hecht uses his boat, “Sails Call”, as a way to recenter himself. “I get on my boat and feel free from the stress of running my agency. When the sails catch the wind, it begins to bring a sense of balance and calm to ‘normal life’ and I feel human again. There’s nothing else quite like it.” For those interested in trying it, ASA schools offer a great training program to take you from not knowing which end of a rope to pull on all the way to being able to navigate by the stars. (asa.com/find-sailing-school/)

“Sailing can be anything you want it to be. It can be as simple as getting out there on a Sunfish enjoying the great outdoors on a lake, all the way to a regatta across the Atlantic, if you like competition.” — Greg Nackman

IGNITE YOUR SUMMER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP BARONE

2 Easy Fires For Your Backyard Fire Pit We all have that friend. The one whose house you go to and everyone hangs out by the backyard fire pit with a near-perfect fire running all night. Drinks, food, stories, and laughter ensue the entire time. "Let's do this at my house next weekend." you tell everyone. After all, you built the fire pit already. The issue left is that unless you are an experienced fire maker or an Eagle Scout, your fire may not start as easy or burn as well as your friends did. So we are here to show you two of the easiest fires to build in your backyard fire pit. These will light easily and burn bright. Maybe it's time to make someone jealous of your fire.

TEPEE FIRE

LOG CABIN FIRE

Possibly the easiest fire to make. 1. Place a big, loose handful of tinder or crumpled newspaper where you want to have your fire. 2. Mound plenty of small kindling over the tinder. 3. Arrange small, then medium, then large-sized sticks around the kindling as if they were the poles of a tepee. 4. Leave an opening in the “tepee” on the side facing the wind to ensure air reaches the tinder. 5. Light under the tinder.

Probably the most useful as it works well in high wind and rain. 1. Place a big, loose handful of tinder or crumpled newspaper where you want to have your fire. 2. Mound plenty of small kindling over the tinder. 3. Put 2 large sticks on either side of your pile 4. Add 2 slightly thinner sticks on top of those but facing the opposite way. 5. Keep going up and, as you go, move the sticks slightly in towards the center of each layer 6. Finish with a layer of small branches at the top 7. Light under the tinder.

Your last step for either style is to invite those Wayne Lifestyle people to your next fire pit hangout
