Hands Against Hunger LOCAL ORGANIZATION OFFERS HOPE
I
f you’re looking for a way to accomplish that New Year’s resolution to make a difference, look no further. Down the
road in Sharonville, a local non-profit organization offers a chance to do just that. A Child’s Hope International (ACHI) seeks to mobilize the community to help care for vulnerable children around the world by sending them healthy meals and clean drinking water. One of the organization's programs, Hands Against Hunger™, provides more than 10,000 meals every day, a number that Executive Director Larry Bergeron hopes to double over the next few years. “Since we started in 2008, volunteers have produced 25 million high protein meals and 3 million gallons of clean drinking water,” Bergeron says. This significant milestone of 25 million meals was reached in November, and volunteers were treated to a special celebration to thank them for their contributions and commemorate this achievement. More than 50,000 volunteers have offered their time, efforts and money to help this Cincinnati organization, which delivers food locally through outlets like the Cincinnati Free Store Food Bank, regionally in Appalachia, and to 15 countries around the world, including Haiti. “Volunteers serve at the Hope Factory or at their place of work or worship to produce Hope Boxes™,” Bergeron explains.

Hope Boxes™ contain high protein food and clean drinking water supplies. These materials are then shipped to Haiti and distributed to trusted partners on the island. The needs of the people of Haiti are staggering. By all standards, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with an estimated 3.8 million Haitians not having enough food to meet their daily requirements. Bergeron humbly explains, “Without our help, many of the Haitian children would not be alive today.” As he talks about the work of volunteers, Bergeron grins. “All of our materials are assembled by hand for a reason. Volunteers have a soul, a heart and an ability to change the lives of those far less fortunate than them.” These volunteers are saving a life they will probably never meet. Bergeron says the Hope Boxes™ are called by that name for a reason: a simple cardboard box that is packed by Cincinnati volunteers who genuinely care to provide hope. In addition to its volunteers, ACHI is made possible by donations and local businesses. “Even though we only need 25¢ a day to provide a child with high protein food and clean drinking water, those

costs become significant when serving large numbers of children,” Bergeron says. Churches, schools, civic organizations and businesses can support the trustworthy efforts of ACHI, which was recognized in 2015 as a finalist for the coveted BBB Torch Award for Ethics and Integrity in the marketplace. Additionally, 90% of all donations go back to program expenses. McSwain Carpets & Floors is one of the local businesses that contributes time, money and support with the office and warehouse space where ACHI is located off Kemper Road. President Jason McSwain is humbled to be a part of the unique cause. “It is not often I come across someone who is the real deal. Larry and the team at ACHI are those kinds of people. Consistent, genuine motives. A passion to be life-changing,” McSwain says. Why would a business become involved in this?
A group of volunteers at the Hope Factory
McSwain beams, “McSwain Carpets & Floors has a foundational tenet of partnering with organizations like ACHI, but my ‘why’ is found in Scripture. Luke 14:13 says when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and blind, and you will be blessed." Volunteering to create Hope Boxes™ can be a great opportunity to spend time together with your family, church or business. "Twenty-six members of our extended family, three generations, recently worked together in a common cause of serving others," McSwain says. "It was humbling and memorable.” For additional information about the organization, its needs and volunteer opportunities, go online. Among several other high-tech devices, you’ll find a Hydroworx® therapy pool with a floor that rises for easy entry. It features an underwater treadmill, live video technology and massage jets with adjustable resistance. “It’s great for patients who’ve, for example, had a stroke and can’t handle the impact of a traditional treadmill for treatment,” explains Kelley Lawrence, vice president of health services. On the opposite end of the space are several private treatment rooms and an Occupational Therapy suite: a fully functional kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and even laundry machines. Jamestowne is singularly focused on turning illness into wellness. Including the entire family in that process helps a patient to a quicker recovery and smoother lifestyle changes. And we happen to have a lot of great staff that makes it easier to do that.” Patients may never want to leave this beautiful place, but Jamestowne will send you packing when the time is right. Its attentive care follows you home with Community First Solutions’ continuum of services, including pharmaceutical and meal delivery and transportation to doctor’s appointments. “If you get to choose, wouldn’t you choose this?” Webb says, gesturing to the wide, sunlit hallway of Jamestowne’s coastal wing. “Most people don’t even realize they have a choice.” “After a tour of this facility, people are ready to get that surgery they may have been putting off,” Lawrence says. THE IRON
WOMAN LOCAL ATHLETE GOES THE DISTANCE ARTICLE SHAWNA TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED eroes come in many different packages with many different messages. One local West Chester woman is heroism personified. She is powerful, smart, determined and full of compassion. Meet Renee Zegar, West Chester’s very own “Iron Woman.” At the age of 41, Zegar has accomplished many things the average person may find impossible. She is a mother of two, an educator, a cancer survivor and a dedicated fitness champion who regularly competes in marathons, triathlons, and most recently an Iron Man. The feat of balancing many roles and responsibilities comes to her from a place of dedication and passion. Zegar entered the competitive circuit in 2005 when she ran her first marathon, a 26.2-mile run. That year’s San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon had her hooked. In the years since, she’s competed in numerous races and racked up countless achieve-

Triathlons are divided into several different categories or lengths with the full Iron Man being the longest—a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle ride and 26.2-mile run. It was Renee’s third place finish in the Chattanooga race that earned her the most remarkable achievement: a spot to compete in 2016’s Iron Man World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, this past October. “Kona was a magical bucket list thing and I was honored to be there. I’ve seen it on TV and I couldn’t believe I was actually there,” Renee says. Renee completed the race in 11 minutes,

33 seconds, an above-average feat, especially for a first-timer. The Iron Man World Championship is the pinnacle of triathlon endurance racing in the world. The best professional athletes from across the globe gather to compete. But this West Chester woman is not a professional. She’s simply someone who finds joy in what she’s doing and strives to build upon her own strengths and weaknesses. “I always tell people that they have no idea what they’re capable of, especially women. We don’t realize how strong we are and what we can do if we let ourselves try new things,” Renee says. Next up for Renee is to participate in the 2017 World Championship for the half Iron Man distance, and she looks forward to taking steps to become an Iron Man certified coach. “I want to help and train people. I feel like I have a lot of knowledge and passion for it and I want people to know what I know. I want to help them get there and be by their side when they do,” says Renee, our very own Iron Woman.
“I always tell people that they have no idea what they’re capable of, especially women. We don’t realize how strong we are and what we can do if we let ourselves try new things.” 24

1. FIND YOUR SQUAD You know what they say: there’s power in numbers. Your health is no exception. Form a supportive, healthy community to encourage you, push you, and to help you stay active and motivated. Find a gym buddy, attend a group cooking class or schedule a yoga party. Sharing your health goals with those around you can help you stay on track for the new year.
2. MIX IT UP It’s easy to get bored. Mix it up! Change your routine to keep things interesting and stimulating. This might be as simple as practicing with a different teacher or coach. Try a new recipe or commit to attend a new workshop each month—then do it! Gracetree offers many workshops that promote personal growth.
3. EAT WELL Whether you already follow a healthy diet or not, plan a cleanse for the new year. Cleanses don’t necessarily have to consist of green juice

donate your “old” clothes to a good cause.
5. BREATHE It’s simple, but breathing influences how stress affects our bodies. If you don’t already, try breathing techniques and meditation. Pranayama (mindful breathing) for Health is a Gracetree class offered Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Zen Meditation is offered Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. You don’t have to be experienced to attend one of these classes.
6. SCHEDULE IT If you are creating a new routine, make it as simple as possible for yourself. Pick a schedule or activity you can stick with that is not frequently interrupted by ‘life.’ Let others know you are not available at that time and give yourself permission to stick to that schedule.
