CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH THE PARADE OF LIGHTS HOW SWEET IT IS: SUGAR BISCUIT BAKERY EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH EXPRESSIONS HOME GALLERY
Lifestyle Letter
Local love.
NOVEMBER 2015
L
ast year we took the kids to the Parade of Lights and we were awed by the amazingness of this event. The pageantry and skill it took to put that many lights on a vehicle, bicycle or body was beyond my comprehension. My husband Mike quipped that this year we would engineer our own amazing float. He is quite creative and he loves a challenge but sometimes his creativity can be a little scary. So I decided it would best if we sit on the sidelines again this year.

In this month’s issue we are showing our love for all of our local businesses and neighbors. There is a new president at the helm of the Camp Bowie District. This organization’s goal is to champion the businesses and keep the boulevard beautiful. Then our friends Robbie & Yvonne Turman are bringing an oyster/seafood restaurant to the west side. I am especially excited about this. Our cover art was deliciously provided by Sugar Biscuit Cakery, located on Bluebonnet Circle. Ratna’s creativity with fondant is a sight to behold.

When Mike and I started this magazine almost two years ago, we wanted to give back to our community that we shop, live and work in. We love that many of you reach out to us and share your opinions, ideas and news with us. Our purpose is to tell the stories of our community and we have barely scratched the surface. So when you see us around town, make sure you let us know how we are doing. We are so thankful for the many blessings we have and want you to know that you, as our reader, are one of them.

Around Town COUTURE IN A CAN One of the biggest misconceptions about women is that they ALL love to shop, but actually ALL women just like to look great and many hate the process. That is how Couture in a Can came about in 2012. Couture in a Can is a ladies' mobile boutique that brings the store to you in their converted Airstream trailer. They carry 20+ designers not saturated in the DFW area. Looks range from casual to business casual. The best part of shopping in the “Can”... you often leave with something fresh and updated, reason being you have stylists on hand to help you out of your fashion rut without the pressure of typical corporate retail. You can find Couture in a Can by signing up for their newsletter @ CoutureInACan.com. Not your bag? Then have them out for just yourself at the house or invite girlfriends over for girls night out. Couture in a Can brings the fashion and cocktails and you feel like a star. You can find Couture in a Can @ Winslow’s Wine Café the last Wednesday of every month 5:30-8:30 p.m. with the exception of November, when they will be parked there Wednesday, November 18th instead, due to the holiday.

Oysters Ho! THE DIVE OYSTER BAR IS SET TO EMBARK ON A VOYAGE OF DELICIOUSNESS ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS

T
he sign at 3520 Alta Mere Drive is already inspiring rumbling bellies and salivating palates: the Dive Oyster Bar, the newest project from Mule Pub and Oscar’s Pub owner, Robbie Turman. The happy, smiling blue fish with his mug of beer promises good times, savory food and sudsy refreshment — in short, everything a person could hope for from a lunchtime spot or evening destination. Ready to set sail on December 1, the Dive Oyster Bar isn’t out to reinvent the wheel; it just wants to serve up a delectable experience in a relaxed, casual environment. “We’re shooting for a fun atmosphere,” says Robbie. “Families and kids are welcome. It’ll be a lunchtime and after-work place, more of a restaurant than a bar. The name says ‘dive,’ so we’re not going for anything fancy, just good customer service and a friendly atmosphere.” Of course, the best customer service and friendliest atmosphere in the world can’t compensate for subpar food; luckily, the Dive Oyster Bar’s fare will leave patrons happy as clams. Robbie has entrusted chef duties to Josh Rangel, formerly of Water’s Restaurant. “Josh has taken control of the food in the kitchen,” says Robbie. “In creating the menu, I’ve given him more say over everything. He’s especially knowledgeable, coming from a seafood background.”
“The name says ‘dive,’ so we’re not going for anything fancy, just good customer service and a friendly atmosphere.” Diners can expect a full catch of seafood-inspired grub, including pub favorites like fish and chips and po' boys, along with clam chowder and crab claws. The oysters themselves will be available in a variety of ways. “We’ll have different specials throughout the week, different oyster bakes, crab legs, all kinds of stuff,” says Robbie. “I’ve also given Josh free reign to do a few things that you won’t see at other oyster bars, like kim chi.” The Dive Oyster Bar promises food good enough to cure the crabbiest of attitudes. A range of beer and wine will only add to the fun, and ensure that the Dive joins the Mule Pub and Oscar’s among the westside’s favorite evening spots.
For those who can’t stay docked, but have to set sail for their home port, the Dive Oyster Bar offers a drive-thru service. Simply call ahead and place your order, and your provisions will be ready when you arrive. Beer and wine will also be available to-go, so patrons can chart a homeward course and cast anchor for the evening. If, like this writer, you consider such a place a blessing from cod, you might wonder what gave Mr. Turman the inspiration for his newest venture. Pleased diners can address all “thank you’s” to the building itself. The former home of Salsa Fuego, the structure beckoned to Robbie like the X on a treasure map. “I’d been asking the owner to let me have that building for a few years,” explains Robbie. “I just thought that it looked like an oyster bar, with the outside pillars resembling a dock.” Robbie’s inspiration is now a bonafide reality, and a welcome addition to his growing family of establishments. A soft opening period of two weeks will precede Thanksgiving, with the official unveiling just in time for the holidays. “We’ll have our soft opening for a few weeks to train staff and make sure we’ve got our plating and ingredients down the way we like them,” says Robbie. “Then we’ll take a short break for the holiday and be back to open on December 1st.” If you need a vacation from the malls and other stresses of the holiday routine, don’t forget this pearl of an oyster bar. At Robbie and Yvonne Turman’s The Dive, you’ll have a whale of a good time.

The Building a Better Benbrook campaign began in response to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) expansion project of Benbrook Boulevard/U.S. 377. Our busiest commercial corridor, Benbrook Boulevard is undergoing construction that promises a newer, wider, safer roadway. Today, the campaign is incorporated in all our efforts to improve our community and to deliver exceptional service to our customers, our citizens.
The City of Benbrook and the Benbrook Economic Development Corporation are committed to easing the inconvenience of the Benbrook Boulevard project, and several facets of the Building a Better Benbrook campaign are in place to support and assist our business community. From taking the lead in establishing information sources, to ensuring public safety routes, to offering a storefront improvement grant, to encouraging consumer loyalty, Benbrook is proactively supporting a vital economy. As we look to the coming weeks, we are encouraged and excited to continue the Benbrook tradition of hosting community events, and encouraging giving and volunteerism. Please join us in our annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Fireworks Show at Dutch Branch Park, 1899 Winscott Road, on Saturday, December 5. Thereafter, for the entire month of December, Benbrook

omes exist in states of fluidity, ever changing to meet the needs and tastes of inhabitants. Most homeowners — especially those who have built their homes or lived in them for years — appreciate their houses as virtual family members: unique and complex entities that change just like any living thing. As you design your home or begin the process of a remodel, it’s easy to get overwhelmed through the sheer bounty of options in interior accessories and appliances. You want your home to suit your needs and feel reflective of your personality; but a lack of ideas — or impatience with the process — leads many people to settle for mundane, cookie-cutter results. Residents of Fort Worth have a valuable ally in the quest for the ideal home. Open since 2009, the Expressions Home Gallery 16

kitchen and bath showroom is located at 5001 Bryant Irvin Road North. Formerly known as Morrison Expressions Home Gallery (a MORSCO company) allows homeowners to browse interactive, fully functioning kitchen and bath layouts to find inspiration or products for their homes. Expressions Home Gallery also works with clients to design single rooms or comprehensive layouts for the entire house. Clients can trust in the expertise and professionalism of Expressions Home Gallery — after all, they’ve got more than a little experience. “Expressions was branded last fall as the premier brand showroom of MORSCO, the parent company,” says Jayme Adams, manager of showroom development. “Morrison Supply is one of the largest platforms under MORSCO and has been in business since 1917.”

Morrison Supply Company has deep roots in Fort Worth. Founded as Fort Worth Pump & Windmill Company in 1917, the company has grown to accommodate multiple other appliance and plumbing suppliers, and expanded its reach across several states. Expressions Home Gallery benefits from the massive scope and resources of MORSCO to make a world of appliances and home design products available for any customer project. “We work through both appointments and walk-ins,” says Jayme. “Simply bring your plans and know your budget.” The design process at Expressions Home Gallery typically begins with plumbing and includes the bathrooms and kitchen. “We walk clients through, room by room, and select items such as toilets and faucets for those spaces,” says Jayme. “Next we do appliances, and help educate clients on products to determine what they need. The last thing we do at the Fort Worth location is hardware, which can include custom cabinets and door hardware for the interior and exterior.” Just because you’ve had your home for awhile, doesn’t mean you have to settle for an outdated or boring kitchen and bathroom. Remodels can also benefit from the Expressions Home Gallery treatment. “Remodels form a large portion of our business,” says Jayme. “It’s the same process as new home construction, but has a quicker turnaround.” Once clients have picked out all the hardware, fixtures and appliances they need, Expressions Home Gallery works as the liaison to coordinate orders and installation. Homeowners can leave it to Expressions to manage subcontractors and ensure that every project meets the most exacting of standards. From start to finish and conception to reality, Expressions Home Gallery sets a high bar for the home shopping experience. “A commitment to service,” says Jayme, “is what sets us apart.”

SUGAR BISCUIT'S CAKES LOOK ALMOST TOO GOOD TO EAT — ALMOST. ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
L
ike greeting cards, cakes serve to celebrate and mark special events, and should reflect not only an appropriate sentiment, but the uniqueness of the occasion. Everyone has memories of that one special birthday cake, which sat like a trophy to display the celebrant’s love of Disney, or baseball, or airplanes. The wedding cake, a piece of which often goes forever uneaten in the freezer, is itself a visual element of the ceremony, with a taste secondary to its appearance. When it comes time to celebrate a birthday, wedding, holiday, or other special milestone, many people opt for bland cakes and tired designs chosen from a sticky, laminated binder in the supermarket. For cakes (and cupcakes) as delicious as they are special, you’ll need to go elsewhere: to Bluebonnet Circle, the home of Sugar Biscuit Cakery. “Big time manufacturers cannot make the kinds of things we do,” says Ratna Goenardi, owner and cake mastermind. “Our custom cakes are always made specifically with each customer’s situation in mind. We ask lots of questions and always tailor things to the occasion.” The exquisite craftsmanship and delicious taste of Ratna’s creations has led to a steady growth in Sugar Biscuit’s business. “Our storefront opened last year,” says Ratna. “That grew the business. We have walk-ins who place orders, along with daily cupcakes for sale. Our main target is custom orders, though. Growth has been a very steady upwards incline.” One bite of a Sugar Biscuit creation, and you’ll understand what all the fuss is about. Ratna uses only the finest quality ingredients to ensure that her cakes taste as good as they look. Customers who place a custom order can count on a hands-on, interactive process. “Sometimes we’ll brainstorm right on the spot, and if the idea is a little loose and vague, I take time to think about it, then email them some ideas,” says Ratna. “It’s definitely a process.” Sugar Biscuit makes custom cakes for any occasion, including the holidays. Her most popular items, however, have year-round appeal. “We do Star Wars cakes all the time,” says Ratna. “TCU is also a big seller, of course. For the holidays we’ll put together several prototypes for people to choose from.” If you want to try something new this Thanksgiving, give the pumpkin pie a rest. Instead, celebrate the season with a delicious delicacy sure to delight eyes and tastebuds. Got some ideas for a showstopper centerpiece-dessert? Stop by Sugar Biscuit and see where your imagination takes you.

West FW Lifestyle | November 2015
As
diverse and urbane as any major city, Fort Worth maintains a treasured fidelity to traditions and annual events that reach across demographics to unite the citizenry. Whether it’s the MAIN ST. Arts Festival, Concerts in the Garden or the Parade of Lights, Cowtown residents turn out to celebrate — and embrace one another as shared inheritors of a proud cultural legacy. The beloved Parade of Lights returns this year for its 33rd annual incarnation in downtown Fort Worth. Event planners have organized a day to welcome the holiday season in style, and set a new standard for future parades in the process. “The Parade of Lights is a signature event for the city,” says Larry Anfin, chairman of the Festivals and Events Committee for Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc. “You can really feel the energy when everybody’s down there, and we’ve got a great one planned for this year.” The 2015 Parade of Lights will take place on Sunday, November 22, a change from previous years. In the past, the parade occurred the day after Thanksgiving — Black Friday — which created some problems for downtown retailers. “We estimate that last year we had around 150,000 attendees,” says Larry. “We’ve been so successful bringing people to downtown, that some of the businesses had trouble doing business. That’s why this year we’re hosting the parade on Sunday, a slower retail day.” Attendees can expect a couple other innovations for the 2015 parade. This year, the lighting of the Sundance Square Christmas Tree will provide a capstone for the event, and will occur as the parade’s grand finale. Santa Claus himself, who will commandeer a float festooned with 15,000 LED lights, will oversee the tree lighting. Other signature floats will include those from Parade of Lights’ title sponsor XTO Energy, sponsors GM Financial, Wells Fargo and JPS Foundation, and a special float featuring the Texas Girls’ Choir. An additional air of excitement surrounds plans for Lockheed Martin’s float, which will feature “special effects.” You wouldn’t CONTINUED >

have a parade without marching bands, and six award-winning troupes from Fort Worth ISD schools will ensure a full playlist of seasonal favorites. With three decades of history for inspiration, it makes sense that this year’s parade should promise to be bigger and better than ever. The Parade of Lights began in 1983 thanks largely to the efforts of two Fort Worth ISD employees: art director Bobbie Brooks and band director Howard Freeman. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade provided a model, and a partnership with Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. ensured the logistical support to spark one of the Metroplex’s finest holiday traditions. With more than a hundred thousand annual attendees, it’s safe to consider the Parade of Lights an unqualified success. The 2015 edition of the parade will occur as a daylong set of festivities. The party gets started at 2 p.m. in Sundance Square, at which time an extended bus service begins from Farrington Field. Attendees are welcome to arrive at 4:30 p.m. to secure a good spot. Early arrival also ensures a couple of hours to shop downtown merchants or grab a cup of hot chocolate before the bulk of the crowd descends. Around this time, the Cowboy Santas will make their way down the parade route to collect toys, and guests can enjoy other special acts in the hour before the parade’s kick-off. CONTINUED >

The parade itself will begin at 6:00 p.m., with Santa’s float scheduled for its departure at 7:10 p.m. The Sundance Square Christmas tree will be lit at 7:45 p.m., after which attendees can enjoy the fellowship and cheer of the season in the square and around downtown’s bevy of restaurants and bars. The last departure for the parade’s extended bus service will leave for Farrington Field promptly at 10 p.m. In a fitting act of homage to the parade’s beginnings, a trio of Fort Worth ISD leaders will serve as this year’s grand marshals. School board president Jacinto Ramos Jr. will join interim superintendent Pat Linares and superintendent Kent Scribner to welcome the season and celebrate Fort Worth’s heritage. 28

If you’ve attended the parade before, you will need little encouragement to experience it again. For those that have never experienced the magic and fellowship of the parade, get ready for a treat: a spectacle of lights and f loats unburdened by over-the-top commercial ambitions or advertising, where the focus falls squarely on sharing the spirit and joy of the holidays. For many people, the Parade of Lights embodies the very best of Fort Worth’s identity. “The greatest thing about Fort Worth is that, while people may have differences in opinion, there is a common desire to make things better for the city,” says Larry. “The XTO Energy Parade of Lights represents that tradition.”

Looks Good on Paper KELLY VIDRINE'S CREATIONS TURN ANY CORRESPONDENCE INTO A WORK OF ART ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
E
veryone loves a good success story: inspiring tales of those who follow their passions, and through dedication and hard work achieve beyond their wildest dreams. One local artisan has transformed her love of art and craftsmanship into a booming business still in the process of expansion. Kelly Vidrine, a former clerk at a stationery shop, found inspiration for her own professional success in the wares she once sold. “I looked up at the walls everyday and thought, ‘I could do that,’” says Kelly. “I always loved to draw and create, so I started to work on my own designs.” Several years later, Kelly Kay Paper is a thriving artisanal stationery and invitation producer, with quality products sold in 300 stores. Identifiable thanks to their whimsical designs and delicate artistry, Kelly Kay designs celebrate life’s special moments — and give paper enthusiasts a reason to spill some ink.
Like all homegrown enterprises, Kelly Kay Paper started off small, however; Kelly’s first customers were family and friends. “I had started to work on my own designs, and was kind of peddling my wares to friends,” says Kelly. “Someone in the industry, a paper sales rep, saw my designs and encouraged me to go to market.” Kelly, whose preference was to spend less time with the manufacture of small orders and more time on her art, took this suggestion to heart. With the help of her husband, Kelly went to market for the first time in summer 2008. She hasn’t looked back since. “My husband and I have been scrapping this out since the beginning,” she says. “We created a great booth and won best in show at our first market. From there we picked up a paper rep group, and that’s where it all got started.” While Kelly got her start with custom commissions and individual sales, these days she exclusively works wholesale. Kelly Kay Paper has no fewer than 12 sales reps, with product availability in 29 states. In North Texas, shoppers can find Kelly’s stationery and other paper goods at Fort Worth’s P.S. the Letter and Paper Affair on Lovers Lane in Dallas. “We’re hoping it continues to grow, and that I can put my illustrations and designs on other items, like decor pillows and tote bags,” she says. Kelly has already expanded her work to include kitchen towels and greeting cards. How does she come up with enough ideas to fuel such an expansive product line? Simple: she finds inspiration everywhere she looks. “I love to look at fashion, home decor and blogs,” says Kelly. “You can find inspiration anywhere, wherever people are creative. I’ll have an idea in the car and have to stop and write it down, or send myself a brain-dump email.” For example, Kelly recently noticed a wedding trend where brides adorned their hair with fresh flowers. She took this
idea and sketched out some floral designs, which she then had produced into a die-cut flower crown to wrap around invitations. Kelly’s creative endeavors also benefit from her education and artistic talent. This TCU graduate has a degree in graphic design and works out her illustrations in oil pastels. “I use a brand of paints called Sennelier,” says Kelly. “They were developed for Picasso and are really low maintenance. I’m a fulltime mommy, and if the kids are eating a snack, I can run in and quickly work on some art.” Despite her success, it remains important to Kelly to maintain local ties. She has everything printed at Brumley Printing, a family-owned company in downtown Fort Worth. For finishing work, Kelly uses Letterpress Graphics on College Avenue. While Kelly Kay Paper steadily expands its scope and reach, Kelly herself stays humble: “Basically, I’m just an artist,” she says. “I draw pretty things and print them on lovely paper.”

President of the Corridor JENIFER REINER TAKES THE REINS AS THE NEW LEADER OF THE CAMP BOWIE DISTRICT ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK
F
ew aspects of Fort Worth embody the city’s soul better than Camp Bowie Boulevard. Named for the training camp created for the 36th Infantry Division, which took its own name from the famed Alamo defender, the boulevard quickly became one of Fort Worth’s most important thoroughfares. Given its present identity in 1921, Camp Bowie Boulevard attained its iconic brick-lined appearance in 1928. Thurber Brick, located in the once-bustling city of Thurber, also provided bricks to pave Austin’s Congress Avenue. Unlike Austin, however, Fort Worth has preserved the integrity of its historic and picturesque boulevard. This respect for tradition and love of the westside identity says a lot about Fort Worth, and also characterizes the efforts of the Camp Bowie District. As a business advocacy group and public-improvement organization, the Camp Bowie District exists to promote greater prosperity and development around the Camp Bowie corridor. The organization recently welcomed a new leader, Jenifer Reiner, to take the helm as president. Ms. Reiner, a career urban planner who has lived and worked around the United States and in Europe, brings a deeply multi-faceted skill-set to her new position. “I come from a background of municipal city planning, in both the private and public sector,” says Jenifer. “In my work whether as a consultant or city planner, there’s always been a part of the job that’s included economic development.” Whether it’s construction of new retail spaces or the filling of preexistent ones, Jenifer understands how to smoothly navigate the business and sustainability of development. Though she’s not a licensed architect, Jenifer’s experience in architectural design has led to a deep appreciation of the unique beauty of Fort Worth’s hallmark thoroughfare. “From an aesthetic point of view, the bricks and historical components of Camp Bowie Boulevard are very attractive, very visually apparent and immediate,” says Jenifer. “The potential of the area, in particular the far west end of the corridor, is amazing, with vibrant local businesses.”
34
West FW Lifestyle | November 2015
Jenifer cites the development of infrastructure along west Camp Bowie as one of her primary goals. As the former City Planner for Benbrook, which is bounded on the north by Camp Bowie Boulevard West, she inculcated an appreciation for the Camp Bowie area, and an understanding of what it needs to thrive. “The professional side of me sees nothing but opportunity and wants to help Camp Bowie businesses succeed and expand, to give all westside residents a variety of accessible services and stores,” she says. As an organization, the Camp Bowie District dates from 2000. It exists as an umbrella name for two non-profits, one of which distributes city tax dollars for public improvements, while the other acts as an advocate for Camp Bowie corridor businesses. In the realm of public improvements, the Camp Bowie District seeks to benefit all corridor businesses, residents and property owners with improvements that include street lights, sidewalks and landscaping and additional infrastructure. As an advocacy group, the Camp Bowie District will utilize its website, as well as social media, events and meetings to coordinate business activities and bring development to the corridor. As for the future of Camp Bowie Boulevard, Jenifer sees plenty of reasons for optimism. “The Camp Bowie District stretches for nine miles from the Cultural District to Loop 820,” says Jenifer. “It’s vibrant and diverse, with different sections all doing well. Our main goal is to build a coalition, to bring it all together into a single community along the entire stretch of the corridor.” From its beginnings as a military route paved with creosote-soaked wooden blocks, to its current identity as Fort Worth’s cultural artery and spiritual heart, Camp Bowie Boulevard has grown and changed alongside its city. With a bright future on the horizon for Fort Worth, count on the Camp Bowie District and Jenifer Reiner to work diligently to sustain and revitalize the historic brick lined corridor.

Parting Thoughts
Affirming Our Thankfulness WORDS AND PICTURE DEIRDRE MICHALSKI
W
e have come a long way since the year 1621, when pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World. Writings recount a three-day feast and sharing the table with Native Americans who populated the area. They were all bringing their various crops, and the recordings describe tables of wild fowl and venison served with a corn mush and stewed pumpkin. Fast forward to today, and so many of those tried-and-true traditions continue. In my family, we carry forth our own homespun style. Thanksgiving is a celebration of heartfelt gratitude. First and foremost, it is a wonderful day when everyone is cheerfully gathered together. And, since I adore cooking, it is quite special. The menu is filled with so many delicious treats and cherished favorites, with thick, heavenly gravy drizzled over just about everything. Like many foodies, my mailbox is filled with cooking magazines chalk-full of creative recipes offering a new twist on an old favorite. And yes, I try them. I love to experiment. However, over the years, I have come to the realization that my family does not want any of this. Forget the ratatouille casserole to replace the haricot vert (green beans) smothered in butter and dancing with slivers of almonds. Say ‘no’ to the shaved truffles delicately adorning my homemade mashed potatoes. And, a flat-out “no way, Mom” was heard for miles to the mere thought of a deep-fried turkey. I am becoming a better listener. Let it be. We want it…the old-fashioned way. Authentic. And, so it shall be. The table is set weeks ahead, and I often wonder why I did not do this years ago when I was working full-time. It just makes perfect sense. The décor is filled with acorns, pumpkins, multi-colored husks of corn, and fall leaves in hues of rich orange and earth tones. Our fancy gold-trimmed china is placed upon burgundy brocade place settings, and silk napkins are the order of this day. A bevy of glassware stand at attention, all announcing the event is near. 42
West FW Lifestyle | November 2015
Thank goodness for my “count-down” list, which assures me some tiny measure of success. Two weeks out I order the freerange turkey. Then, an outing to sample wines, as we make our holiday selections. Then, shopping begins in earnest. On the Monday prior to Thanksgiving, I begin sautéing the onions, celery and cooking the sausage for the stuffing. Using a recipe written in my mother’s hand is a warm reminder of her presence with me in the kitchen. The white wine is chilled, and the red wine is stationed at the bar. The day prior is a day filled with activity–from steaming the vegetables, assembling the stuffing and baking the pies. On Thursday, we are up early to retrieve the turkey and prepare it for baking. A mountain of potatoes are waiting, and that means some quality time with my son, as we briskly peel away, chatting about everything and anything. The smell of the turkey wafting through the house has us spellbound. And, after resting, it is sliced to perfection. In recent years, I will admit to one big cheat. I have resorted to purchasing my gravy ahead of time. I would pay anything for those containers of goodness that save me a half hour I do not have. I pour the golden brown sauce into a pan and discard the plastic containers (which I call evidence). As everyone arrives for dinner, the laughter quickly fills the room, and football chants can be heard downstairs. It is all good and wonderful to be together again. As the host, I place a stone at one person’s place setting. The stone represents the earth and harvest. This year it will be my nephew who will lead the conversation on what he is thankful for. He is a police officer, and recently announced his engagement. So, he has lots of things to share. Then, he will pass it to the next person, and, one by one, we will learn something new about each other and affirm our thankfulness on this very special day. Dinner will be proudly served.
