At Healing Meals Community Project, three beliefs stand as cornerstones of the nonprofit’s mission:
1. Food truly is medicine, and nutritious meals are crucial to healing body, mind, and spirit.
2. Empowering youth with the joy of serving others creates a better future for all.
3. The strength of a supportive community is vital, and collectively, we can always do more.
The group’s mission inspires the Healing Meals team as they prepare nourishing, organic meals for those facing health crises, all prepared by youth volunteers working alongside adult mentors and professional chefs.
“The youth volunteers handwrite caring message cards that are included in each meal package,” says Ayelet Connell, Program and Education Manager. “A dedicated crew of volunteer ‘Delivery Angels’ then ensures the delicious and nutritious meals are delivered directly to each client’s door.”
Since 2016, Healing Meals has delivered 185,000 meals to 2,700 people across more than 70 Connecticut towns. This year, they are on track to serve more than 40,000 meals to about 500 people.
“Your support can help us reach even more families in need.,” says Sarah Leathers, the nonprofit’s founder and CEO.

As life expectancy rises, so too does the demand for effective healthcare solutions that improve quality of life—particularly in the realm of pain management.
Chronic pain, often stemming from conditions such as arthritis, spinal degeneration, or injuries, poses a significant challenge, limiting individuals’ daily activities and independence. The field of pain management has evolved considerably, especially in the last decade, with innovations that allow for precise interventions without extensive recovery periods.
At Integrated Anesthesia Associates Pain Management Center in Hartford and IAA's Old Saybrook clinic, Coastal Interventional Pain Management experts like Dr. Honghui Feng and Dr. MIchael Grille are at the forefront of this transformation, offering minimally invasive treatments that target pain’s root causes and enable patients to live active, fulfilling lives.
From spinal cord stimulators to nerve modulation devices, these technologies empower patients to regain control of their lives without constant pain.
“Quality of life is the core of pain management at IAA,” says Dr. Feng. He and Dr. Grille are dedicated to helping their patients restore function, independence, and a sense of normalcy.
With over 10 years of experience, Dr. Grille brings a wealth of experience in perioperative and chronic pain management. He has seen pain management evolve into a distinct specialty centered on helping patients regain their independence and quality of life.
“The expectation of what people want out of retirement years has changed significantly and pain management has become a very important part of care for aging populations,” says Dr. Grille.
Dr. Feng, who has over two decades of experience as an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, leads IAA’s new Old Saybrook clinic in advancing innovative pain management approaches.
“WE’VE
SEEN GREAT SUCCESS WITH PROCEDURES THAT TARGET SPECIFIC PAIN SITES, HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPACT THESE TECHNIQUES HAVE ON REDUCING PAIN AND ENHANCING FUNCTION.” -DR. FENG
He began focusing on a specialty in chronic pain management following a fellowship in Connecticut in 2001.
Both doctors emphasize that pain management should be more than just symptom relief; it’s about understanding and treating underlying issues that impact a patient’s well-being. In the past, pain was treated primarily with medications, including opioids, often without a complete diagnosis. However, today’s approach, which includes moving away from opioids following the addiction crisis with such drugs, emphasizes careful diagnosis, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and a wide range of therapeutic options.
One area where IAA has seen remarkable success is in the use of technology-driven therapies, such as neuromodulation techniques, including spinal cord stimulation. For conditions such as spinal stenosis—a common, painful condition among older adults—spinal cord stimulators and other techniques provide targeted pain relief without the risks of major surgery, Dr. Grille says.
By modulating nerve signals with electrical currents, similar to how pacemakers regulate heart rhythms, these devices can alleviate pain with minimal invasiveness.
According to Dr. Feng, this technology offers a breakthrough for patients who might otherwise face limited options, such as invasive spine surgery with a low satisfaction success rate.
“We’ve seen great success with procedures that target specific pain sites, highlighting the impact these techniques have on reducing pain and enhancing function.”
Other minimally invasive and targeted techniques, Dr. Grille says, have been particularly effective in treating chronic lower back pain—a prevalent condition that causes missed workdays and reduced productivity.
“When you scan a patient’s back, you might see various issues, but not all of them are causing pain,” Dr. Grille explains. “A tailored approach allows us to create a plan that directly addresses the cause of pain.”
IAA’s commitment to high-quality, integrated care is further strengthened through partnerships with the Bone & Joint Institute in Hartford and Middlesex Hospital, providing patients with a continuum of care.
Whether it’s through physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, or advanced interventions, patients benefit from a collaborative team of experts at IAA, which accepts all forms of medical insurance.
IAA is reaching more patients who need effective, non-opioid pain management solutions, and proudly accepts all insurance plans in order to best accommodate the insurance needs of patients.

At a time when obesity and chronic disease are still stigmatized, Positive Change Weight Loss has emerged as a compassionate, community-focused health practice committed to transformative wellness.
Founded by Dr. Melissa Morales, a physician and health coach, Positive Change empowers patients to control their health in a health care setting that prioritizes empathy, individualized care and evidence-based treatment.
“I treat excess weight as I would any other chronic disease, with the goal being the attainment of better health — not just a better-looking body.”
Dr. Morales’ journey began long before she opened her practice in West Hartford.
Growing up, she witnessed the painful impact of chronic disease in her own family. Her grandfather’s struggle with diabetes and the resulting complications were a firsthand lesson on how interconnected health issues can lead to suffering, which fueled her early desire to understand these ailments.
“It was clear that a person’s environment can impact their weight and lead to other diseases,” Dr. Morales recalls. This awareness guided her into medicine and eventually inspired her to develop a practice that addresses obesity not only as a physical issue but as a complex interplay of genetics, environment and lifestyle.
Positive Change focuses on giving patients the time and space to discuss their health concerns thoroughly.
Dr. Morales tailors her program to each individual, beginning with an extensive hour-and-a-half consultation. This involves physical exams, a review of past medical records
and a lifestyle assessment to understand what barriers may be contributing to a patient’s weight challenges. She and her patients then set mutual goals, choosing sustainable methods to achieve healthier living. Her approach is designed to foster an epiphany with patients —a revelation that often marks a turning point in a patient’s journey to wellness.
“One of the greatest things you can witness as a doctor is your patient having an ‘aha!’ moment that leads to a fundamental change. For many, these realizations result in improved cholesterol, normalized blood pressure, and, perhaps most importantly, restored confidence and self-esteem.”
Dr. Morales’ passion extends beyond individual consultations. On a larger scale, Positive Change advocates for community initiatives that promote healthier living and supports legislative action like the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, passed by Congress in 2021. The federal law seeks to improve access to obesity treatments for Medicare beneficiaries.
“Members of our community can learn more or ask for congressional support by visiting the Obesity Action Coalition website,” she notes, encouraging community involvement in health advocacy.
Positive Change also uses shared decision-making and motivational interviewing techniques to help patients find their internal motivation.
“All goals and steps are decided upon together. I help patients identify their barriers to change, which can be the catalyst needed to take actionable steps.” Her approach is enhanced by Positive Change’s small patient load, allowing Dr. Morales to dedicate time to each individual—one of the rarest but most valuable resources in healthcare today.
One of the most exciting upcoming initiatives at Positive Change is Dr. Morales’ foray into culinary medicine, a movement that emphasizes nutrition and home-cooking as tools for disease management and prevention. Research suggests that cooking at home can help prevent weight gain and promote a balanced

diet, which is why Dr. Morales plans to offer virtual cooking demos for her patients and the community. These classes aim to make healthy eating accessible and enjoyable, a mission that reflects her philosophy that wellness should be as much about empowerment and education as it is about treatment.
As Positive Change continues to grow, Dr. Morales remains steadfast in her vision to foster a compassionate, holistic approach to weight loss and health. Through advocacy, education and individualized care, Positive Change has become a source of hope for those seeking to reclaim their health and build sustainable, healthy lives.

Dr. Thomas McDonald's Unique Approach to Orthopedic Care
ARTICLE BY LUCINDA JAMISON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN HELMKE
With an 18-year career dedicated to foot and ankle orthopedics, Dr. Thomas McDonald of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (OAH) is distinguished for his medical expertise and the profound human connection he fosters with each patient.
A family legacy of healthcare professionals influenced Dr. McDonald’s journey into medicine. He followed in his father’s and brother’s footsteps, along with their stories of healing and helping.
The mechanical appeal and craftsmanship of orthopedics, witnessed during his medical school years, firmly set his path.
“It was a total knee replacement surgery I observed that did it for me,” Dr. McDonald recalls. “The tools and the precise mechanics involved felt like carpentry, which I had done before. There was something profoundly satisfying about that.”
After his residency at the University of Connecticut, he specialized in foot and ankle surgery during his fellowship, where he learned the importance of maintaining perspective and understanding when dealing with patients undergoing long, often painful recoveries.
“You can’t lose your sense of humor,” he was advised by a mentor who exemplified the balance of expert care with compassionate interaction.
Today, Dr. McDonald practices at OAH, a leading group with 28 physicians, including four specializing in foot and ankle surgery.
“It’s a premier destination for orthopedic care,” he remarks, emphasizing the practice’s comprehensive support structure, which enhances surgical outcomes and patient recovery.
Dr. Thomas
One of the most exciting advancements in the field is the evolution of total ankle replacement technologies. He reflects on the progress from initial failures in the 1970s to the current fourth-generation implant technologies that offer new hope to patients suffering from severe ankle arthritis.
“It’s one of the most exciting things that I do because patients do so well with it,” he states, highlighting the transformation he witnesses in patients’ lives post-surgery.
His surgical acumen and deeply personalized approach to patient care set Dr. McDonald apart. He is known for taking the time to discuss all aspects of treatment and helping patients understand their conditions and choices. This educational approach is critical, especially in a field where the physical implications of surgery are significant and often daunting for patients. “I believe in empowering my patients with knowledge. It’s about making healthy choices together, choices that lead not just to recovery but to a better quality of life,” he emphasizes.
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Dr. McDonald’s practice is how he correlates his professional insights with personal experiences. Drawing parallels between the challenges of parenting and his professional role, he shares, “Being a parent has helped me appreciate the anxiety around taking care of oneself amidst a busy lifestyle. The same way I guide my children to make healthy choices, I try to help my patients make the same choices in their orthopedic care.”
Beyond the technical aspects of his work, Dr. McDonald values the time he spends with patients, helping them navigate their healthcare decisions. Known for thoroughly discussing treatment options, he believes in educating and empowering patients about their conditions and the available surgical and conservative treatments. This approach builds trust and eases the anxiety that often accompanies orthopedic issues.
“I believe in empowering my patients with knowledge. It’s about making healthy choices together, choices that lead not just to recovery but to a better quality of life.”
For those struggling with foot or ankle issues, his approach offers more than traditional medical treatment; it provides a pathway to making healthier choices and moving freely, with confidence and support. His message to anyone suffering is straightforward: “Come on in and talk! My Team and I will you resolve your pain and guide you toward making choices that will improve your life.”

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.
Combine:
• 1 cup wheat flour
• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled
• 2 cups oats
• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts
The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 2 tablespoons chia seeds
• 2/3 cup raisins or raisins
• Optional: chocolate chips as desired
• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.
Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.
Add this mixture slowly to combine:
• 2 eggs
• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter
• 1/2 cup honey
• 1 banana
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
