Finding Hope in Her Journey

Introducing Kamerie, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital’s 2025 Ambassador

Kamerie begin the fight for her life when she came into the world weighing just 1 pound and 5 ounces with the help of her team at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

Despite her unique journey after spending 384 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), her family has never lost hope. In partnership with the medical experts at Children’s Hospital, Kamerie is paving her own way. Every season is a new opportunity for her to reach another milestone.

We invite you to join in our Season of Giving to support children like Kamerie and others who depend on the specialized care provided by East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

It’s All About the Giving

Do you have childhood memories like these? Growing up in a houseful of brothers and sisters, the gift lists we made when we were little were all about the getting, pouring over catalogs, turning our wishes into Santa letters. We were blessed with parents who worked very hard to be the best Santa-stand-ins they could be to make those wishes come true.

If you had told us back then that the true joy in the season is in the giving, we would have called you crazy. But then we grew up. We discovered for ourselves that it’s not a cliché. It is more blessed, and joyful, to give than to receive.

To celebrate the spirit of giving, our December issue features some of our own Partners and business leaders who inspire us with their commitment to our community. We wanted to spotlight them and the charities that inspire them to give back.

Our Holidays and Giving issue also gave us the opportunity to curate distinctive, one-of-a-kind gifts from some of our favorite local retailers and talented artisans around town for your shopping convenience and pleasure.

Looking for simpler, more stress-free ways to navigate the holidays? From charcuterie to cheesecake, dive into delicious ideas for easy assembling, minimal baking, and great-looking holiday snack and dessert presentations. Melissa Ballard, with PYA Waltman, offers up imaginative twists on simplified gifting that require more of ourselves than just pulling out our wallet.

Knoxville History Project ties a bow on an unopened box of Christmas cards from the 1930’s delivered to one of the city’s most renowned architects, so wellknown some envelopes were only addressed: Charles Barber, Knoxville, Tenn.

We all know that giving need not necessarily be elaborate or especially costly –but it should mean giving something of ourselves. And as Mother Teresa observed, it’s about how much love we put into the giving. Your time is incredibly precious and the time you spend with our magazine and your support of our Partners are gifts that we treasure year-round. We wish you the happiest of holidays and a peaceful New Year!

MEET BUSINESS LEADERS WITH OPEN HEARTS MAKING A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

ARTICLE BY WEST KNOXVILLE LIFESTYLE STAFF

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

In publishing this magazine, the West Knoxville Lifestyle team has the incredible opportunity and privilege to work with some of the most generous and community-driven business leaders in East Tennessee who truly make a difference. We are proud to call these leaders our Partners and friends.

Each month we collaborate with our Partners to bring you stories we’ve discovered that spotlight the generous souls living, leading, and serving in our part of the Volunteer State. All year, we have the pleasure of sharing many of their fascinating back stories — how they got into

the industry, or business, or nonprofit leadership position where they excel.

Our Partners are vested in their community. It seemed fitting for our Holidays and Giving issue to recognize just a few of these leaders, to learn where and why they donate during this giving season.

As decisions are made about year-end donations, we hope this multi-Partner feature will inspire you with their commitment to the charitable organizations that are meaningful to them and impact the lives of so many of our neighbors in need.

Hunger transcends demographics, geography, and backgrounds. Second Harvest works tirelessly not only to provide food to those in need, but also to provide education on healthy eating and to create innovative ways to reach those with the greatest need, such as hungry children in our schools who cannot seek out resources on their own. Our team at PYA Waltman makes it a tradition to volunteer at Second Harvest’s annual Thanksgiving Distribution Day. Second Harvest needs financial support and is always looking for volunteers. Their annual “Double Your Donation Day” is December 7 when a $1 donation will provide six meals! SecondHarvestETN.org

I discovered Harmony Family Center when I got involved as an equine therapy volunteer. Harmony provides innovative support to children and guardians in the realms of foster care and adoption, among other services such as trauma-informed training for our first responders and educators. It’s hard for us to acknowledge that children in our community experience horrific trauma. Harmony leans in to help those children and families move forward in a healthy way so they can live their best lives. Harmony needs our support via financial donations and awareness so they can continue to expand their services and reach. HarmonyFamilyCenter.org

We are proud to support the truly inspirational Smoky Mountain Service Dogs (SMSD). Larry is a retired United States Marine, and we are very grateful for any organization focused on supporting our great veteran warriors. Larry and I have been impressed with this highly professional organization founded by Mike and Suzy Kitchens in Lenoir City in 2010 “to enhance the physical and psychological quality of life for wounded Veterans by providing custom-trained mobility assistance service dogs (at no cost to the Veteran).” SMSD has trained and provided nearly 75 mobility assistance service dogs to wounded warriors and first responders throughout Tennessee.  SmokyMountainServiceDogs.org

The organization that I would like to highlight is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).  I previously worked with seriously mentally ill individuals and veterans, both of which are populations that have high incidents of suicide. Losing my husband guided me to do the work that I do with grief and loss. Though my life was devastated by his choice, I also believe that it guided me to do the work that I do. More education and resources are needed to help people feel that they are loved and have options other than to end their lives. Knoxville has at least two walks (Out of the Darkness) each year to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Afsp.org

Annually, we cater many events for Emerald Youth Foundation, from graduations to their yearly breakfast fundraiser. This program holds a special place in my heart as it is dedicated to nurturing our youth and guiding them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Holidays Simplified

Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES @UNCOMMON.JANE

Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks that look impressive but are simple to create. If you don't have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn't look store bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joes and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

Holiday Charcuterie Board

HOLIDAY CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman. It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE

This inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at Trader Joe's but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest.

Double creme brie board with with local honey, berries and candied pecans

APPLE TART

This apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box, however adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel added color add a homemade touch to this delicious treat.

NAKED CAKE

A cake mix, a simple buttercream frosting and a gingerbread house kit is all it took to create this adorable 3-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow.

DOUBLE CREME BRIE BOARD

This double creme brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joe's and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer and to add interest. This brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE

If you don't have time to bake a cake but want your store bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake, and to add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

GOURMET HOT CHOCOLATE

If serving a warm beverage for guests to enjoy, consider hot chocolate with burnt sugar rimmed mugs. If creating a hot chocolate bar, provide whipped cream and marshmallow toppings as well as added flavorings such as caramel, peppermint, or make it a boozy hot chocolate with whiskey, Bailey’s or Peppermint Schnapps.

Simplify the Season

Fresh Takes on Gift Giving

Sometimes the holidays can be life-taking rather than life-giving. We’ve all had times when “to do” lists or racking our brains to come up with a unique gift can take the fun out of the season. This year can be different. Below are some gift giving ideas I’ve learned from friends and family that I hope will help all of us have more time to breathe and better enjoy the holidays.

“FAVORITE THINGS” PARTY

This new twist on a gift exchange will simplify the season. After setting a per item dollar limit, ask guests to pick one of their favorite things and purchase/bring enough for everyone to take one home. It could be a bottle of wine, a favorite mascara, a new favorite gadget, etc. Everyone can take turns sharing why they love their item and at the end of the night each person leaves with all the “favorite things” to enjoy for themselves. This takes me back to watching episodes of Oprah’s Favorite Things!

PLAN A “SHARED SPLURGE”

Rather than trying to come up with yet another unique gift for your closest friend(s), decide to enjoy a shared experience or a mutual “splurge.” Examples include getting a pedicure together, buying tickets to a musical to attend together, reserving a “chef experience” at a local restaurant or splurging on a “wouldn’t ordinarily spend that much” bottle of wine to share over dinner. Coming up with an idea you’re both excited about can add fun and joy back to the season.

ORGANIZE A “GIVE BACK” GATHERING

Rather than a traditional gift exchange, gather friends for a party, but ask each to bring 10 of an assigned item that can be used to stuff “Blessing Bags.” These can be donated to a local shelter or to support hurricane relief. Knox Area Rescue Ministries has a list of items to include/exclude on their website (Karm. org/faqs/). Examples include travel sized toiletries, deodorant and band-aids. Research shows that doing something to help others promotes joy and provides a mental lift. What better gift could you give to your friends around the holidays?

Reduced stress may just be the best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones this season. Consider these ways, and others, that give a fresh perspective on traditional gift giving while lessening stress and adding some joy back into the season.

Charles Barber’s Christmas Cards

A LONG-UNOPENED BOX OF HOLIDAY CARDS REVEALS STARTLING DESIGNS FROM A PAST ERA

ARTICLE BY PAUL JAMES AND JACK NEELY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KNOXVILLE HISTORY PROJECT, SHAWN POYNTER
Charles Barber (18871962), one of Knoxville’s most renowned architects

For close to 90 years, a box containing unopened Christmas cards, many depicting rich, stylish illustrations, was found in the attic of an old house off Alcoa Highway in South Knoxville. The Christmas cards were addressed to the man who actually designed that house, Charles Barber (1887-1962), one of Knoxville’s most renowned architects.

Barber was co-founder of the architectural firm Barber McMurry and was known as one of Knoxville’s most prolific architects of his era (1915-1960). Born near Chicago, he grew up in the Parkridge area of East Knoxville, and during his early adulthood, lived downtown on Locust Street.

Charles’ father was George Barber (1854-1915) and probably the best-known architect who ever lived in Knoxville. Originally from Dekalb, Ill., just west of Chicago, George Barber moved to Knoxville in 1888. He and partners led the development of the area soon to be known as Park City in East Knoxville, now called Parkridge. Most famous for his elaborate Victorian flourishes, George Barber’s work often features what has been described as “exuberant spindlework designs.” He designed many houses in Knoxville and also across the nation. As one of America’s first successful mail-order-design architects, George Barber houses are now prized from Oregon to Texas to Massachusetts.

CONTINUED >

His son Charles, following in his father’s footsteps, established himself as a young architect of note, by the 1920s in high demand designing houses, schools, and buildings on the University of Tennessee campus, often in his signature gothic revivalist style.

During that decade he designed the distinctive downtown YMCA building, followed by the cathedral-like Church Street Methodist Church. Other buildings include the extraordinary Candoro Marble building in Vestal in South Knoxville. Recently restored by the Aslan Foundation, that building was originally the headquarters for the Candoro Marble Company and stands as a fine Italianate take on the Beaux-Arts architectural style, and a unique showcase of Tennessee marble. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building serves as a community arts and heritage center.

Other notable examples of his work include the “Tudor Revival-style” Westmoreland Water Wheel and gatehouse on Westland Drive and Westmoreland Boulevard also dating to the 1920s.

Barber’s architectural style often featured medieval flourishes as evident in Hoskins Library on UT campus, built in 1931. That stylish building on Cumberland Avenue incorporates a castellated tower, cathedral windows, and gargoyle-like concrete ornaments on the entrance. Inside, the building’s grand stone staircase and high ceilings make it one of the most picturesque historical interiors in Knoxville. It could almost pass for the set of a Douglas Fairbanks movie.

In December last year, Jack Neely, Executive Director of the Knoxville History Project, sat down with Chaz Barber, a descendant of Charles Barber

along with real estate agent Jennifer Montgomery, whom the owner of the house had entrusted with the box of cards. Many of the designs were pure 1930s designs and wouldn’t have been designed like that in any other era.

A few of the senders didn’t even write Barber’s complete address on the envelope, and they still were delivered. For a period of about 20 years, he lived on Tazewell Pike in the Beverly community near Fountain City. It was this address that was handwritten on some of the envelopes found in the box. Some just listed “Charles Barber, Knoxville, Tenn.”

Why did Barber never open these envelopes? We will likely never know the reason, but a good guess may be that he was just too busy. In 1937, when these envelopes were sent, he was at the peak of his career. Several of the cards were sent by his vendors. However, one card was sent by one of his fellow Smoky Mountains Hiking Club friends, botany professor Harry “Doc” Jennison, inviting Barber to join him on a bear census in the mountains. Barber was a supporter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park movement in the 1920s, and along with his brother, George, Jr. helped found the hiking club in 1924 under the auspices of the YMCA.

Now, all these years later, we can still enjoy these Christmas cards this holiday season, not only as fine artistic examples of the 1930s, but also as a fascinating look into the life of a talented Knoxvillian who created much of the distinctive look of our city.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

Dear Reader,

I’m giving you an assignment.

I know that sounds weird, but before I tell you what it is, let me give some context. As people get ready for the holiday season, I’ve watched the original “reason for the season” become replaced with overbearing checklists, workloads, and planning, inevitably leading to stress (or even fear) for upcoming celebrations. Hopefully, though, you are the exception: enjoying life-giving conversations with friends, taking time to stroll thoughtfully in the seasonally-lit parks, sharing a meal with family, sitting with the grieving, and welcoming the needy.

But for the rest of us, (yes, I’m guilty), here is our assignment: Enjoy this season. Seriously. Don’t worry about buying the perfect gift for people who already own everything. Don’t worry about making some weird dish that’ll take five hours to make and five minutes to eat. Don’t feel pressured to attend fifteen Christmas parties if you really don’t want to. Enjoy the season. Watch old movies. Take a nap. Read that book you’ve been wanting to start. Enjoy the less-than-stellar performance of the middle school band concert. Call up an old friend for 30 minutes. Invite a friend out for coffee and play cards. Just enjoy it. There are plenty of ideas, but I just wanted to get the ball rolling. Make this season intentional– you’re going to love it!

Now, great hair makes every occasion better, so give us a call! Come enjoy a relaxing time with people who’ll make you look great and want what’s best for you. (We also have some great items for stocking stuffers, so don’t forget to ask about those!)

Now, start enjoying!

THE BLESSING OF GIVING BACK

The West Knoxville Lifestyle Team has received great comfort and joy curating stories about our generous Partners. We couldn’t imagine a better feature for our last issue of 2024.

We invite you to join us and our business partners in this season of giving back to remember our neighbors in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina still needing so much help recovering from Hurricane Helene.

We each have a different capacity to help out financially or to volunteer. At whatever level you can give, it will make a difference.  Season’s Blessings!
