Instead, the physical and mental side effects of the surgery would haunt her for years. When she woke up in the hospital, Nathalie was partially blind. She couldn’t read or write. Like Phoenix, the Duck has risen from the ashes!” The restaurant had previously announced that it would be closing after 40 years in business. There was a furious reaction from longtime patrons, some answering the appeal for funds to keep the restaurant open. With the closing announcement, there were offers to owner Pete Aitkin and landlord Bob Sloat, according to those familiar with the situation.

Staying Fit with Craig Melvin THE JOURNALIST AND NEWS ANCHOR GETS CANDID ABOUT HIS FITNESS ROUTINE AND LOVE OF WESTPORT ARTICLE ANNA BARNES PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN VIDELER
WESTPORT LIFESTYLE: Happy New Year! Let’s start off with everyone’s favorite new year question: What is your 2019 New Year’s Resolution? CRAIG MELVIN: I stopped making resolutions because by the time February rolls around, it’s easy to feel like a failure. In 2018, I wanted to focus on mindfulness. Now I’m borderline obsessed with the app, Headspace. WL: Since we’re talking health & wellness in this issue. What’s your favorite way to stay fit? CM: Definitely running. Not because its cathartic, I honestly just don’t want to be morbidly obese. My favorite route is right in downtown Westport. I jog down Main Street and eventually cross the bridge over the water. It’s about 4.5 miles. In the winter, I’m in the gym. I’m an elliptical guy and I need 20 minutes of cardio or I don’t feel like I’ve worked out sufficiently. I work out by the practice of low weight, high reps. I guess you could say I’m old school when it comes to the gym. WL: We all have that move we dread in the gym. What’s yours? CM: Easy. Ab work and I loathe pushups but a trainer told me it’s the most effective exercise for my body. 14
Westport Lifestyle | January 2019
WL: You’re a very busy guy. On top of your day job, you're a husband and a father to two small kiddos, how do you keep your energy up? You really do DO it all... CM: Cat naps whenever I can. Usually when I'm riding in the car and occasionally I'll catch a nap in my office. I drink, what could be considered by most, an unhealthy amount of coffee, starting at about 5 a.m. I also once read that drinking a gallon of water

every day will greatly impact your energy, so I do what I can to stay hydrated. I avoid big lunches because I can't afford the afternoon sluggishness. WL: Once the caffeine wears off, how do you unwind? CM: As a family, we try to have dinner together a few nights per week. After the kids go down, my wife Lindsay and I relax or maybe watch a show together. When we can, we like to factor in a date night in town. WL: For someone who is well into their job when the majority of us are just waking up, what time do you go to sleep? CM: I like to call it a night by 9:30 - that’s a good night. The
hardest part is the weekend when my body clock wakes me up around 4:30/5 am. WL: How do you stay motivated? CM: If I didn’t do what I do for a living, I’d probably be 300 lbs. My primary motivation for hitting the gym is that I don’t want to look fat on TV. I workout and exercise with the mindset: get the biggest bang for your buck. For me, that is cardio over weights. WL: What's your favorite way to indulge? CM: My mom’s macaroni & cheese is my very favorite thing to eat. Six different types of cheese. Heavenly. But I’m not eating that every day - so I’ll say a nice glass of bourbon. I know my limits. I could lose 10 pounds if I cut out alcohol but how fun is that? It’s not. WL: What made you want to call Westport home? CM: Initially, it was proximity. Lindsay was at ESPN while I was in the city, but we've come to realize that Westport is the perfect place to raise a family. We love the walkability, the downtown area, the proximity to the beach and that everyone is so nice. January 2019 | Westport Lifestyle

“I thought exercising would appeal to a large number of people, and it’s more social than just asking for money,” Katie says. Joyride loved the idea, and Rhodie’s father-in-law, a psychiatrist, volunteered to address the crowd of charity riders, impressing upon them the importance of de-stigmatizing mental health issues. Another Joyrider, Britt, discovered Joyride when she moved to Westport from NYC five years ago with her husband and two young children. Two years after the move, she became pregnant with identical twin boys. In December 2015, an in-vitro examination showed one of the twins, now Evan, had a congenital heart defect. Specifically, the right half of his heart was missing. Bereft, Britt confided the diagnosis with Mackenzie, one of her favorite instructors. Mackenzie asked if she could share Britt’s story with another Joyrider who, tragically, lost her first baby daughter to a similar heart defect years before. With Rhodie, they organized an annual spinning fundraiser during CHD week. After only two rides, they’ve raised more than $40,000 for CHD research. But there’s more: Evan’s heart required Britt to deliver at Boston Children’s Hospital. So Rhodie’s parents loaned Britt their Boston apartment for the four weeks leading up to her delivery at 36 weeks. They continue to welcome Britt and Evan to their apartment whenever he requires surgery at the hospital. “It [Joyride] is community; when you enter the doors, you’re a family and you get a big hug,” Britt says. “Everyone knows your name, people come up and ask about Evan. We’ve cried at Amy Hochhauser and Rhodie Lorenz
Joyride so many times.” Sometimes Joyride doesn’t raise money but raises self-awareness. Which, in Dianna’s case, proved far more valuable. After years of marathons and pummeling her joints on concrete, Dianna became “addicted” to the low-impact, high-energy Joyride spin classes. While she loved the energy and music, she also appreciated the quiet moments in between songs. “I was taught how to listen to my body and be attentive to my thoughts,” Dianna says. “Before Joyride, there were few quiet moments and even less really mindful ones.” It was in this mindful state she realized something was wrong with her body. She was more breathless than normal and dizzy after jumps. Ordinarily, she would have ignored such subtle inconsistencies, but the instructor’s urging of her riders to heed their physical state made her reconsider and try to figure out what might be causing her symptoms. After numerous tests, the doctors finally found the problem: benign brain tumor (acoustic neuroma). Had the tumor not been discovered and removed at that early stage, “It would have been larger and more difficult to remove with much more serious side effects. Truly, Joyride saved my life,” Dianna says. So when you wake up in the cold, dark hours of January cursing the psychopath who invented New Year’s resolutions, follow the bright logo to Joyride. It may not make waking up any easier, but it will make being awake far more rewarding.

MASTER YOUR ATHLEISURE STYLE WITH HELP FROM THE STYLISTS AT TRUNK CLUB
WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS TRENDS, KEEPING UP WITH THE EVER-CHANGING INFORMATION THAT’S OUT THERE CAN BE DIFFICULT. “This one move will change your legs forever;” “You’ll never eat these foods again after you read this story;” or, our favorite, “A glass of wine a day can help you live longer.” When you’re busy juggling the latest workout app craze or cleaning out your refrigerator only to find out a week later that those items are good for you again, it can get overwhelming. So, when you want a break from it all but don’t want to give up feeling sporty, take the trends from your yoga mat to your closet instead and stock up on athleisure wear. As the stylists at Trunk Club, a Nordstrom Company, put it, athleisure isn’t necessarily about working out—it’s designed for a lifestyle. Incorporating chic, comfy silhouettes with sporty pieces gets you through the day with a fashionable vibe you’ll want to sport—no pun intended—on the regular! For more style tips and to get your own trunk today, visit TrunkClub.com.

B A SI C U P G R A D E If a fuss-free outfit is what you’re looking for, keep it simple! The Trunk Club stylists recommend faux-leather leggings and a scoop-hem tank as an easy way to take the essentials up a notch. Finish off your look with a lightweight jacket, a baseball cap and a backpack with unique detailing for just the right amount of edge.
02
E A SE D U P If you’re looking to reflect your laid-back outlook but need to appear put-together, consider pairing a sporty logo tank with cropped wide-leg pants. Pro tip: Keep your outfit fresh with pieces in a cool, earth-tone color palette, and then bring it all together with trendy accessories with unique detailing.
