A Visit to the Albin Polasek Museum

Celebrating the works of internationally acclaimed Czech sculptor Albin Polasek ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUTH SHIVELY

14

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

“Winter Park is a gorgeous place to paint, with beautiful gardens, lakes and sunsets. It’s pretty much a city inside a park.” It’s impossible to count the number of people who have driven along Osceola Avenue and never noticed the entrance to one of Winter Park’s hidden gems. Tucked away on Lake Osceola, the Polasek Museum incorporates the home and studio of internationally acclaimed Czech sculptor Albin Polasek. Visitors who tour his home, galleries and beautiful sculpture gardens are prone to walk away with a heady dose of surprise and delight. The tour comes highly recommended. To be able to dig that deeply into the life and works of one artist is a fascinating experience. It’s rare to be able to focus on one single artist, and one of the many reasons the museum stands out worldwide as a cultural treasure. At the Polasek, the art and gardens illustrate the life and times of this important artist and changing exhibitions celebrate a wide range of “art that tells a story.” While the museum isn’t easy to find, it’s well worth the effort. The museum’s leaders have been able to overcome this obstacle to a large degree through signature events like Winter Park Paint Out, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary next year. The Annual Winter Park Paint Out is planned for April 23-29, 2023. Patrons come to enjoy art, artists come to create it, and the museum makes it all possible.

Twenty-three professionally-acclaimed plein air artists will paint at the Polasek Museum and at other locations throughout Winter Park and Orlando. Art lovers are invited to watch the artists at work and attend free painting demonstrations. Works will be on display as soon as they are completed and dropped off at the museum’s wet room. All artwork created during the week will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to support the Museum. This program demonstrates nicely the synergies that Executive Director Debbie Komanski and her board have built between the museum, and the City of Winter Park and the arts community. Plein air artist Orit Reuben enjoys Paint Outs because they provide beautiful places to paint en plein air, while putting the artists in front of a community of collectors who are enthusiastic about the places in the paintings. “Also, the camaraderie and friendships among the artists is pretty great and a paint out is like a big reunion. Winter Park is a gorgeous place to paint, with beautiful gardens, lakes and sunsets. It’s pretty much a city inside a park,” said Reuben. “(Polasek’s) sculptures are so well balanced and sensual in a classical sort of way. They’re really beautiful to paint.”

On the Rails

Experiencing the joys of travel by train ARTICLE BY RUTH SH IVE LY

20

H OT SP OT | AU TO + M A R INE

Columbia River

“I love my job!” That’s not something you hear every day, but for Kim Huber it’s a certainty. After 20 years in real estate and property management, her two years as a travel agent have been a dream come true. Driven by her love of travel and extensive experience vacationing in the U.S. and abroad, Kim has taken her passion and transformed it into a successful career with Cruise Planners, a top travel franchiser. As a land and cruise expert, she’s worked with close to 100 clients and guided them through the complex maze of vacation planning. Train trips are one of the more fascinating ways to see the world, she says, but it takes a savvy planner to help make the experience enjoyable from beginning to end. There’s a lot to consider. “You can approach it two ways. Some people come to me and say ‘I want to go here, here and here. Piece it together for me. I’m not joining a group tour.’ Then you have people who want to join a tour. They want it all seamlessly taken care of from start to finish.” Then the planning process moves to the level of experience they want, including seat and food service. “I always recommend people traveling with friends have their own private car. These don’t have to be sleeping cars, just a private car where you can have some privacy.” According to Kim, a favorite destination is Alaska. “People love seeing the mountains and wildlife from glass-domed train cars. Denali Park is a top attraction.” Taking a train certainly beats being the designated driver and missing the amazing views, she noted. Another favorite excursion is a four-day trip that begins in Arizona with an overnight stay at a historic hotel. “Then you take the train to the Grand Canyon and stay a couple of nights at one of their resorts before returning.” “I’m so happy with my career. I get to meet so many people and I always want to know the story behind every vacation. Why are they going? Who’s going and what are they celebrating? What’s the purpose behind the trip? What kinds of feelings do you want to have on this vacation?” she explains. “And then I get to help them create that story. Wow! If I can focus in on the story they’re trying to create, they’ll remember it forever. That’s what I enjoy most.”

FITNESS, FREEDOM & FUN HIT THE BIKE TRAILS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

When Matthew McKay decided to open a Pedego Electric Bikes store in Central Florida last November, Baldwin Park was his first choice for the location. He picked the Orlando market for its 12-month environment – a place where you can spend time outdoors all year round. And he chose Baldwin Park because of its central location, and the bike trails. “When you get to Baldwin Park, there’s hundreds of miles of bike trails just 50 feet from our front door. It’s a spectacular place to ride a bike. Whether our customers are purchasing or renting, we’ve got lots of places for people to go.” Because of its downtown location overlooking Lake Baldwin, the store gets a lot of foot traffic and is just steps from a wide, paved bike path that goes around the lake. This path, called Lake Baldwin Trail, offers a relaxed, neighborhood ride that runs 2.5 miles through shaded areas and connects via a short spur on the opposite side of the lake with Cady Way Trail. It’s a local favorite, partly because of a section of cycle track that separates bicyclists from motor vehicles. There’s also a short, paved side trail through Mead Botanical Gardens that’s used by bikers as a link between the Orlando Urban Trail and Winter Park. CONTINUED >

“The freedom that Pedego allows gives you freedom to see areas of Florida that you may not be familiar with, because you’ve only done it by car,” Matthew notes. “I discovered Orlando by bike, and it was because of the Orlando Urban Trail, Cady Way Trail, Wekiva Seminole Trail, and the Cross Seminole Trail. I like being able to listen to a podcast while riding, and having the freedom to breath the fresh air that Florida provides. It’s just fun.” With the abundance of bike trails available to area residents, Matthew’s store is a popular stop for locals. Part of his business is bike rentals. “We have people who own bikes but want to try an electric bike, and they like it that we’re so close to the trails. We also see people who’ve never been on a bike, or haven’t been on a bike in 30 or 40 years, but want to keep up with their grandkids or get a little bit more exercise, and an electric bike is their choice.” Pedego offers 17 different models of bikes and has over 230 stores across the country, all dedicated to being able to ride before you buy. “People want experiences. A lot of times they don’t necessarily want assets. So being able to come and rent a bike and enjoy the day, and then a month later have another date day, rent a bike and go in another direction with a picnic lunch. Those are fun things that we can provide – something different and something fun that promotes a healthy lifestyle.” Whether customers want to purchase or rent, Pedego has a variety of bikes to fit a wide range of needs. “If someone has ankle, knee, leg, back or arm problems, we have bikes that are easy to get into. You only have to raise your leg nine and a half inches to get onto the bike,” Matthew explains. “If you like a relaxed cruising style and just want to enjoy the outdoors, there’s a cruiser-style bike for that. If you’re the type of person who wants to hang out on wooded trails in the back country, we have bikes designed for that, too. And all of them are electric.” Matthew takes pride in being able to serve the community. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a request or need that we couldn’t fill,” he shares. “Some customers come to see us once a month or even once a day! They love their bikes, and they’re enamored with the freedom they enjoy to get outdoors and live a healthier lifestyle.” For a free map of local urban and rural bike trails around Baldwin Park and Winter Park, drop by their store at 4931 New Broad Street in downtown Baldwin Park.
