From The Editor Art Villafane

‘Tis the season. This is the time of the year when many of us join members of our family to celebrate the Christmas season. At the same time we should remember those who are not as fortunate as we are. Those might be members of the military who are serving far from home or it may be a family member who is too far away to join us. To help with your celebration we list several local activities to which you can take the family to enjoy the holidays. Please check out our article “Things To Do With Grandkids”. It covers a wide area so you should be able to find some events to consider. During the winter many of us tend to stay indoors, but we may not like the idea of staying indoors for so long. The solution - get out and do something! To that end our article “Beat Cabin Fever” gives you several ideas on activities that will get you out of the house and get those bones moving. Enjoy! 2

If you have a loved one (or ones) who is getting on in years you should make it a point to check on them over the holidays. This is not just a holiday visit. Rather, it is also a health and wellness check by you. Our article “Check on Your Aging Loved Ones” gives you pointers on what to look for to ensure that all is well with them. There are telltale signs that might give you a clue to conditions you should investigate further. New Year’s resolutions are a regular source of amusement, because we all make them and then ignore them. We have an article on resolutions you can keep and that can benefit your health at the same time. Read about them and then follow through. You will be healthier for it. Lastly, we at Lifestyles over 50 want to wish all our readers and advertisers a very Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and a Healthy New Year. We very much appreciate your support throughout the year. Peace. • 855-233-7034

Seasonal Affective Disorder... More Than the Winter Blues By Lori Samer, RPh. New Year’s Resolutions You Can Keep By Robert Formica, Health Partners Plans Lots of people make New Year’s resolutions on January 1 but break them by February. At Health Partners Plans, we want you to make resolutions you can keep. That’s why we have put together a few suggestions that don’t require a yearlong commitment. Take charge of your health and well-being today! Get Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit This lesser-known Medicare benefit is a great way to move toward better health. During the consultation, your doctor will take your blood pressure, listen to your heart, and take measurements such as your waist and height. He or she will also conduct a health risk assessment. That includes asking you about your mental and physical health as well as things like family medical history, lifestyle, current medications and any tests or vaccines you might need. Finally, your doctor will provide counseling and referrals to improve your overall wellness. Check Out Your Local Senior Center Think senior centers are just knitting and bingo? Think again. Sure, those might still be on the schedule, but today’s senior centers offer a lot more for active adults. Many centers have fitness activities and classes on everything from computers to ballroom dancing. To find a location near you, consult your Area Agency on Aging, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In Bucks County, call 267-880-5700. In Montgomery County, call 610-278-3601. Take a Driving Course What good is health without safety? The Pennsylvania Mature Driver Improvement course is about more than the rules of the road. Cars have changed over the years. Safety features have changed how we drive. For instance, with antilock braking systems now standard on most cars, pumping the brakes during an emergency stop is no longer recommended. The course gets you up to speed on these changes. It also teaches methods to compensate for vision loss and slower reaction times. Driving classes are offered in person and online. They usually cost around $20, but may earn you a discount on your car insurance. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation course is offered by AAA, AARP, Safe 2 Drive and Seniors for Safe Driving.

Check on Your Aging Loved Ones David Rosenberg, Senior Care Advisors, LLC

As the holidays approach, I am reminded they are a time for joyous celebration and togetherness with family and friends. It is also a time we often receive phone calls from concerned children and other relations who just visited their older adult relative still living at home, and are concerned about him or her. Before your holiday visits, I have some simple tips to help you be proactive and see how your older loved ones are doing. As a start, use your senses. How is Dad dressed? Is he wearing the same clothes on multiple days? Are the clothes stained? If they still drive, check out the car. Are there new dents? How is his driving during the day and at night? Is Mom frequently forgetting familiar names, faces and places? If you open the fridge for a snack, check it out. Does Mom usually prepare the meals but now the fridge is empty? Does it smell with spoiled food? How does the house look? Are there items, such as newspapers and laundry, on the floor, and are they blocking doorways? Is it dark in the house because light bulbs are out in hallways and other key areas of entrance and egress? If Mom or Dad is living with a spouse or aide or someone else, take some time to listen to them about how things are going. Ask open ended question that cannot be answered with just a yes or no.

If you are finding areas of concern, it may be time to have a conversation with your older loved one(s) and family. For tips on how to have the conversation, call an aging lifecare professional. You can visit www. aginglifecare.org. For more information about Senior Care Advisors, please call 215-470-9010 or visit www. seniorcareadvisorsllc.net. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Five months after the Camaro’s introduction, the Firebird entered production and offered buyers a choice of both six- and eight-cylinder engines. Adult Day Care Services provide a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services for adults in a community-based group setting. Services are designed to provide social and some health services to adults who need supervised care in a safe place outside the home during the day. They also afford caregivers respite from the demanding responsibilities of caregiving. Adult day care facilities for the elderly are licensed and inspected by the Department of Aging. Costs for Adult Day Care Services range from $75/day to $100/day. The costs are paid for with private funds or may be partially/fully covered by long-term care insurance, Veterans Assistance, or Medicaid through the County’s Aging Waiver Program. A list of questions to ask when visiting adult day care services can be found at Lifestylesover50.com.

Personal Care

Non-medical home care includes a wide variety of companionship, home helper and personal care services that helps individuals with living activities as well as ensure a safe environment. All non-medical home care companies are licensed by the state of Pennsylvania. Payment for services is often made by the client as traditional medical insurance does not cover non-medical home care. For those who qualify, non-medical home care may be paid for partially or fully through Medicaid (via the County’s Aging Waiver Program), Veterans Assistance and long-term care insurance. The average cost of non-medical home care services can range from $18 - $28 per hour, depending on one’s needs.

Independent Living is designed for individuals who can live independently. Some are affiliated with health care facilities that provide additional support, if needed. Ombudsman provides assistance in investigating and resolving complaints brought by, or on behalf of, longterm care consumers such as residents of nursing homes, personal care, assisted living facilities and recipients of home health care. Contact 1-800-677-1116 or Eldercare.gov for your local ombudsman. Personal Care Homes are Pennsylvania State licensed facilities that offer semi-private and/or private rooms to those who need assistance with living activities but do not require skilled nursing care. The levels of assistance varies among the communities. Respite Care is short-term care and relief to enable those caring for a loved one in their homes to have a break for rest and relaxation or time away to do errands. Personal care homes typically offer respite care as a short term (several days) admission to the facility.

Semi-private

communities that offer varying levels of on-site care to residents; from assistance with daily living activities to nursing services. The costs for personal care homes can range. The average cost per month for a semi-private room is between $2,000 and $4,500, and a private room costs between $3,500 and $7,000 in southeastern Pennsylvania. The costs are typically funded by the residents but may be funded by Veterans Assistance and long-term care insurance. Below are some commonly used terms. Alzheimer’s / Dementia care is a service offered by some personal care homes to manage the needs of those with memory impairment. Levels of care vary and may include staff training, special programming and secured areas. Assisted Living is a term for personal care facilities that meet specific Pennsylvania State licensing criteria. Continuing Care Retirement Communities offer a comprehensive, lifetime range of care from independent living to skilled nursing care. Costs and levels of care vary widely.

Rehab / Therapy

Skilled Nursing Facilities provide 24-hour care for those requiring rehabilitation or for those with long-term illnesses. Services may include medical care, therapies and assistance with activities of daily living. Facilities are licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Depending on an individual’s circumstances, costs for skilled nursing and rehabilitation can be covered fully or partially by Medicare, Medicaid, major insurance, and long-term care insurance. In some cases, care needs to be paid for by an individual’s private funds, in which case monthly costs can range between $10,000 and $14,000.
