Fashion for
Los Cabos
As you begin preparing for your holiday extravaganza to Los Cabos here are a few fashion tips that will help eliminate the stress of packing and assist in ensuring the bare essentials for a fun filled vacation. The weather this time of year is absolutely fantastic as the temperatures are cool in comparison to the extreme summer months. To best prepare for your trip you will want to pack a combination of summer wear and light winter wear. Winter in Los Cabos is very mild in comparison with the average day temperature in the mid 70’s and mid 50’s at night. Advisable wear are breathable cottons, linens, nylon, denim and water friendly fabrics, along with sunglasses and a wide brim hat to keep you in the shade. Organize an ensemble of shorts, skirts, dresses, tank tops, and shirts. I always find it easier to color block to a degree when traveling so you can mix and match without too much thought. The desert breeze can cause some cool nights so be sure to bring a jacket, sweater, pashmina, pair of trousers and/or jeans, and a maxi dress. Simple cocktail attire is always a necessity when vacationing abroad as you never know where a tropical night will take you. Los Cabos is a place of magic and romance so expect the unexpected. Athletic wear is recommended as there are a lot of fun outdoor activities on the peninsula. Bring your dri fit wear as it can be used for a multitude of purposes while exploring Baja. You might want to include a pair of sweats and a windbreaker. As far as shoe wear I recommend flat sandals for walking around town, havaianas are always perfect for the beach, runners for your outdoor activities, and heels for the evening. Don’t forget a clutch for the evening and beach tote for the day. 10

As for your toiletry bring the usual daily grooming supplies, though please be sure to remember sunblock. If you take vitamins or regular medication prepare for the duration of your stay. While in a foreign country sometimes digestion takes some getting used to, so just in case throw in your bag some tums or pepto. If you do forget anything, we have you covered. You can buy almost anything here that you can get in the States, so do not worry. Just make sure you stay hydrated, keep cool and have fun! 11

Fashion Event
Cabo San Lucas hosted an international cultural event Saturday November 23, 2012 at the Skypool/Dayclub in the Wyndham, which over looks the famous marina yacht harbor. ART, FASHION and DANCE came together on stage for one night to entertain, educate, raise money for a good cause and expose Cabo San Lucas to the world in a different light. The event showcased cosmopolitan fashion designers Staci Snider, who is based in Cabo San Lucas via New York and gr.dano, fashion duo Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer out of San Francisco, California. Both labels showed their Spring/ Summer 2013 Women’s Collections with stunning local models walking on a floating runway underneath a starry night. It was a night of magic, romance and transformation with three exquisitely choreographed dance performances intermittence by Habana Sweets and French saxophonist Felly playing classic Beethoven. The event was inspired by surrealist artists Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varos and the ballet Les Sylphides. With months in production, planning and gaining community support with local sponsors for the show, the exhibition went on and was executed without a flaw. A 500 pesos entrance fee was charged for general admittance with an array of VIP tables surrounding the catwalk for maximum exposure, all to benefit the growth of the Ray Thomas Foundation. The Ray Thomas Foundation is a beautiful program established in the Baja Sur area which helps feed, develop and encourage the youth whom need a helping hand. I was the organizer and producer of this event, to which I specifically chose the Ray Thomas Foundation, as it is an organization that I wholeheartedly support and believe in the cause. 12
The mission for this event was to bring more culture to the area and nurture our surrounding beauty and talent. Our agenda was to recognize, showcase, educate and pay tribute to Surrealist Art, Dance, Music and Fashion. We want to inspire, encourage, believe in and develop fellow artists, friends, family, peers, athletes, neighbors, and especially children. Three medians came together this November evening to fuse one idea, one mission: to realize one’s own destiny. Cabo San Lucas is an alluring beach community that is developing the necessary building blocks for continued success and growth. This event set precedent for what is to come in the future.

WHAT IS, AND WHO IS AT RISK FOR HEAT STROKE?
Heat stroke is a form of hyperthermia, an abnormally elevated body temperature with accompanying physical symptoms including changes in the nervous system function. Unlikeheat cramps and heat exhaustion, two other forms of hyperthermia that are less severe, heat stroke is a true medical emergency that is often fatal if not properly and promptly treated. Heat stroke is also sometimes referred to as heatstroke or sun stroke. Severe hyperthermia is defined as a body temperature of 102 F (38.88 C) or higher.
16
The body normally generates heat as a result of metabolism, and is usually able to dissipate the heat by radiation of heat through the skin or by evaporation of sweat. However, in extreme heat, high humidity, or vigorous physical exertion under the sun, the body may not be able to dissipate the heat and the body temperature rises, sometimes up to 106 F (41.1 C) or higher. Another cause of heat stroke is dehydration. A dehydrated person may not be able to sweat fast enough to dissipate heat, which causes the body temperature to rise.
HEalth
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
Heat stroke is not the same as a stroke. “Stroke” is the general term used to describe decreased oxygen flow to an area of the brain. Those most susceptible (at risk) individuals to heat strokes include: • infants, • the elderly (often with associated heart diseases, lung diseases, kidney diseases, or who are taking medications that make them vulnerable to dehydration and heat strokes), • athletes, and • any individuals who exposed themselves under the sun for a long period of time ( beach ).
What are heat stroke symptoms and signs?
Sometimes a person experiences symptoms of heat exhaustion before progressing to heat strokes. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include: • nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps and aches, and dizziness. However, some individuals can develop symptoms of heat stroke suddenly and rapidly without warning. Different people may have different symptoms and signs of heatstroke. Common symptoms and signs of heat stroke include: • high body temperature, • the absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin • Rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, strange behavior, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizure, and/or coma.
What about heat stroke in children?
While the elderly are at greatest risk for heat stroke, infants and children are also at risk. In particular, infants or young children who are unattended in locked car may suffer heat-related illness quickly, since the indoor temperature of a locked care can rise to dangerous levels even in moderate weather. Rarely, infants have died of heat stroke when overly bundled in their cribs. It is critically important that parents understand the medical dangers inherent in leaving children unattended in cars in addition to the obvious safety risks. Further, cars should always be kept locked when not in use so that children may not enter them and become trapped. Among older children and teens, heat stroke or heat-related illness is a risk for athletes who train in hot environmental conditions. Among reported heat-related illnesses in U.S. high school athletes, the majority of cases occur in football players during the month of August. 17
HEalth
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
How do you treat a heat stroke victim?
Victims of heat stroke must receive immediate treatment to avoid permanent organ damage. First and foremost, cool the victim. • If the person is able to drink liquids, have them drink cool water or other cool beverages that do not contain alcohol or caffeine. • Monitor body temperature with a thermometer and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101 to 102 F (38.3 to 38.8 C). • Always notify emergency services immediately. • Patient most have a IV treatment with fluids to hydration at home or hospital.
How can heat stroke be prevented?
• The most important measures to prevent heat strokes are to avoid becoming dehydrated • If you have to perform physical activities in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids (such as water and sports drinks), but avoid alcohol, caffeine (including soft drinks and tea), and tea which may lead to dehydration. • Your body will need replenishment of electrolytes (such as sodium) as well as fluids if you sweat excessively or perform vigorous activity in the sunlight for prolonged periods. • Avoid to get suntanned in between 10:00 am – 17:00 pm

LEGAL AFFAIRS FOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND AUTO INSURANCE >>Now that you have decided to reside in Mexico as your second home you might be considering getting your own vehicle for your personal transportation, but where to start? Let us help you to make the wisest decision to avoid frustrations regarding where to buy it, register it, and insure it, among many other considerations! TO BRING YOUR VEHICLE FROM NORTH Bringing your actual vehicle from United States or Canada is definitely a good option, although you must know that you will not be allowed to loan it to anybody who does not hold a non-Mexican driver license. The reason is: taxes. No Mexican is allowed to bring a car from US or Canada without paying the proper importation taxes. Only Americans and Canadians can drive their own foreign car in Mexico because it is understood that they will be keeping current their registration in their country. ADVANTAGES • For Insurance Companies, “the more people insured, the lower is the insurance premium”. This is the reason why insurance rates for North American and Canadian vehicles are much lower than insurance rates for Mexican cars, where the Insurance Culture is still an issue. • Mexican Auto insurance for North American and Canadian vehicles is suited as the American way. You can get (by paying the additional premium) a fixed deductible, uninsured motorist coverage, vandalism and partial theft insurance. • You may get a special rate if you specify that you are going to keep your vehicle in the Baja limits and will not take it to mainland. • There are insurance carriers that provide a discount for having your Home and your car insured with them.
20
DISADVANTAGES • Although there are insurance Carriers whom you can cancel the insurance if you return to your country or if you sell your vehicle and get a refund for the nonused premium; most of the Mexican Auto insurance are not refundable. • As already mentioned, you may not let your housekeeper, property manager, Gardner or even your driver drive your US or Canadian plated vehicle, if they don’t have a North American driver license. • Some States, require you to take your car back to the US or Canada, to renew the registration and may represent an inconvenience. This might not be an issue for you if you don’t mind to drive the car back to update your registration or if your registration is from a State where is not necessary to take the car and you can renew the registration by mail. TO BUY A VEHICLE IN MEXICO You can choose to buy a Mexican registered car. First you need to know that there are two kinds of Mexican plates: 1) “Placas Nacionales” (Mexican plates) mean the car was made or assembled in Mexico or at least brought it to Mexico by the Brand Dealership, without ever being sold in the United States or Canada. These vehicles are guaranteed, with low mileage, usually in good shape. 2) “Placas Fronterizas” or “Importado” (Imported car) means the car was built out of Mexico, and then it crossed the border to a Customs Broker to pay the proper importation taxes to be considered Mexican now. Usually they can only circulate in The Baja Peninsula and in the Border cities. These cars are commonly cheaper, because there is no way to know their real mechanical conditions.
insurance
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
DISADVANTAGES • Insurance premium is higher that insurance for US or Canadian plated vehicles. • Not all the coverages available for the US or Canadian plated vehicles are available for Mexican plated ones • It is highly recommended to get your Mexican driver license so you don’t go through a bad time with the police officers that are looking for a “reason” to “give you a ticket”. REQUIREMENTS TO TURN A UNITED STATES OR CANADIAN PLATED CAR IN TO AN IMPORTED MEXICAN PLATED CAR
Insurance for vehicles made in Mexico are more affordable than insurance for imported vehicles because of the difficulty to get spare parts of the imported ones and if they are totaled, they are more difficult to get salvaged, since they are only allowed on roads in the Border cities and the Baja Peninsula.
To make your foreign car an imported vehicle, you may need to have it taken to a Customs Broker in the Border, Tijuana, Mexicali, etc. They will take the car back to the States to check with the US authorities, that your car has no criminal records, and for them (The American officers) to physically check the vehicle. Then the car is returned to Mexico and by paying the Broker fee and the importation taxes, which may vary depending on the year, capacity, fuel, etc., the Customs Broker gives you back your documents along with a Mexican invoice and the Importation Certificate.
ADVANTAGES • Vehicles with Mexican Plates are easier to sell when you want to get a new car. • Insurance policies are easy cancellable and you’ll get back your unearned premium. • The renewal of the registration is easier, just need to go the Mexican DMV. • For recent models, you also can get (by a small additional premium) reduced deductible, rental car up to 15 days, liability extended to your driver license so you will be covered for liability when driving any other Mexican (not rental) car. • Claims are solved faster since the spare parts are easier to bring to the body shop or workshop. • There are insurance carriers that provide a discount for having your Home and your car insured with them.

IMPORTANT! NEW LIMIT TO PAY IN CASE OF A THIRD PARTY’S ACCIDENTAL DEATH ON AN CAR ACCIDENT By the end of 2012 the Mexican Federal Labor Law was modified to establish the new amount for compensation in the event of decease by an accident. You will hear all kind of rumors going around but the official version is: To compensate the family of a deceased person in an accident, it used to be 730 times the minimum salary per day in Mexico, now it is 5,000 times, but taking as a reference the highest minimum salary, which goes around 176 pesos (the lowest minimum is not even 65 pesos) per day. But it is not the Federal Labor Law who establishes the punishment for those who accidentally kill somebody with their vehicles since the Labor Law relates only for those accidents at work. The Mexican Federal Civil Law establishes that, whatever the Labor Law stipulates, the compensation would be 4 times that amount. 4 times 176 pesos is 704 pesos, and 5,000 times 704 pesos is over 3.5 million pesos.
This compensation is not only for death, it is also for disability, total or partial. Many insurance carriers are aligning their Third Party Liability insured amount to around 3,000,000 pesos or more, so your Auto insurance backs you up in the sadly event of the loss of a life or a disability. You either can approach to your insurance Agent to ask your Liability limit to be raised now, or at your renewal time. The law is already effective, so the recommendation is to increase ASAP. The difference in premium should not be as significant. Remember drive safe, follow the laws, use the safe belt, don’t drive when you are drinking or when you are tired and keep your insurance current. Live Healthy, Safe and Happy

STEPS TO ACQUIRE PROPERTY IN MEXICO, SPECIFICALLY IN THE RESTRICTED AREA To acquire a property in Mexico may be considered a complicated process for someone that does not have the experience in such process, nevertheless if the individual pretends to acquire the property educated him self in this acquisition process and also seek professional counsel in that matter, it is very possible that the process can become simpler than it looks. The first thing that a possible buyer should take into consideration, is that to acquire a property all over the world, implicates additional cost to be considered; in our case and specifically en Mexico, the additional costs are normally the following: a preliminary tile sear, acquisition tax, real estate agent commission, permit, registration rights, trust fees, legal and notary fees; the amount of all these expenses is calculated based in the amount of the operation, meaning the purchase price of the property.
Any real estate broker or specialized attorney may assist you in developing a cost, right and fees exercise that will be generated for the acquisition of the property that you wish to acquire, these all together are known as “closing costs estimated”. Another very important recommendation is that, before to do any purchase, to proceed trough a specialized attorney a preliminary title sear; this search has an objective to deeply analyze the property antecedents since the begging, since its “birth” until the purchase date, this search will give us an historical x-ray of the property as well as any possible line or encumbrance or in general any legal matter that may affect the property. It is also important to verify that the property is current in the payment of all services such as water, electricity, telephone, internet, television, cable television and most important that there are not outstanding. Once done all these recommendations and prior to the acquisition process of the property, I will mention in a general manner the steps to follow in the acquisition process of a property in Mexican territory trough the Trust “Fideicomiso” figure or in its case the cession of rights over an existing one. Step One. - Appointments with buyer, with seller, their respective agents, or vía fax. -Receive documents -Receive all the information necessary for the preparation of contracts and the trustee bank instruction letter.

CARNIVALS IN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR (February 14th –February 17th, 2013)
>>Enjoy the Carnival Street Party in the middle of beautiful and contrasting desert & ocean views that you can only find in Baja California Sur >>> Mexico, as a Catholic Nation is preparing for one of the most important times of the Catholic calendar: The Easter´s Lent. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Catholics begin to prepare for the Easter celebration with prayers, small sacrifices of their favorite things for personal reflection. This is also the time of year when Catholics refrain from eating meat on Fridays, which is why many people organize a symbolic goodbye party for the meat…”Carne Vai”, hence the carnival. (colocar esto en un recuadro como definición de carnaval)
During the dates prior to Easter, usually in countries of Christian tradition is celebrated the festival of Carnival, a tradition with more than 5000 years old. Once arrived into the New World, the tradition was established as one of the most important holidays in the Catholic Calendar. La Paz, Baja California Sur, was one of the sites that adopted the carnival to be held at large since 1888, being perhaps one of the oldest carnivals in Mexico. 30

Flying Private to Cabo Did you know that Baja California Sur is the only state in Mexico that has 4 international airports?
SJD SAN JOSE DEL CABO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT & FBO MMLS CABO SAN LUCAS INTERNATIONAL FBO LAP LA PAZ INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LTO LORETO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
I think this re affirms the long term growth potential for development that this incredible state has. If you haven’t been to our local FBO’s lately, take a peek. The Cabo FBO road & facilities
have been improved & the SJD FBO has been moved to another terminal that is also a step up from the last one. This summer we aligned ourselves with ATI Jet Charter for our upcoming fall/ winter season. This will give our clients access to the best priced private jet travel & also to their Medical air ambulance division. You never know when you’ll need this service, but now you can deal directly with the service provider and avoid from being overcharged in the event of an unforeseen incident. So the next time you feel like flying private or if you or anyone you know requires medical evacuation out of Mexico, give us a call as we are certain we can get you the most competitive prices in the market.
The following is a note from our Private Air partners Welcome to the world of private flying, where you will leave behind the indignities associated with airline travel... We are ATI Jet Charter, a company with more than 20 years experience flying high profile business people, celebrities, top government officials and some European Royals. We have our main base and corporate offices in El Paso, Texas, and operational bases in Eagle/ Vail Valley, Colorado, Teterboro, NJ, Van Nuys, CA, and Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands. We also operate ATI Airmed, an air ambulance service with intensive care unit capabilities for those who have been struck by disaster away from home. Our fleet consists of 4 comfortable and luxuriously appointed Learjet 55’s, one luxurious Learjet 35 which is convertible to ambulance, and one dedicated ambulance Lear 25. We exclusively operate Lear jets, the most trusted and reliable, best built light and mid size jets that have millions of flight hours of proven track record without structural 38
failure even under the worst weather conditions. Some high profile professionals and corporations in our Eagle and West Texas regions have second homes in Cabo, and routinely fly here; we serve both San Jose and Cabo San Lucas airports, depending on what the customer requests. You will enjoy the consistency of stepping on an airplane that looks just like the one you just flew with us last month: all our fleet has the same corporate paint scheme and the same interior configuration and appointments, so customers have an exacting standard and know what to expect from us, flight after flight regardless of which aircraft was assigned to them for the trip, unlike those big name fractional operators where there’s a myriad of aircraft types and configurations. All our captains must meet the requirement of having a minimum of 3000 hours in Lear jets before we allow them in the left seat, so rest assured your crew is
experienced on the aircraft they’re flying. All their training is done at Flight Safety Learjet training center in Tucson, AZ, and reinforced with recurrent, periodical training at our home base in El Paso, TX. We have operated accident free since company inception, and that’s the result of our safety policies and crew training. We invite you to check with us when planning your next Cabo trip (www. atijet.com), and our partners on the ground LIFESTYLE can put together for you the ultimate Cabo experience.

It’s a perfect ride to do with your significant other or best friend, where taking the plunge is just half the fun!
The Sling Swinger is one of the activities we offer at Wild Canyon that involves our famous glass Gondola. It’s there, where most of the action takes place and where adrenaline peaks. Upon your arrival at the park, we’ll provide you with the appropriate equipment and detailed instructions to your activity. Then, you’ll take a cable car to the center of the canyon, where vtransfer to the gondola. Once inside the gondola, the feeling changes— with its tempered glass bottom, you’ll feel like you’re suspended in the air 300 feet above the canyon. And then comes the moment when we connect you to the bar of the swing and release you. You’ll free fall and then start swinging in a pendulum of a 240-foot radius—the wind on your face, the intense feeling of falling and it’s all just half the fun. Just wait until you start swinging back and you get to live the experience all over again…but backwards!

OUTDOORS ADVENTURES
Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas One of the most spectacular sights in Cabo San Lucas is the enormous grey whales frolicking around with their calves. Every winter, the grey, blue, and humpback whales migrate 6000 miles from Alaska to the warm and shallow waters of Baja California in order to mate and birth their young. Spotting the magnificent creatures, that can grow up to 100 feet in length and reach 120 tons in weight, is an awe-inspiring gift from Mother Nature. If you visit Los Cabos between December and March, you are likely to have numerous encounters with 50 foot grey and blue whales that will get up close to the boats and show off their tricks.
50
From coming up for a breath and spouting to signify their presence to a full body breach where the whale rockets out of the water, a close encounter with these animals is something everyone needs to experience. Baja California is their vacation destination even more than it is yours but you both can enjoy the ocean together. Baja is home to two world heritage sites that protect the whales and the surrounding environment. This makes it a perfect breeding ground for the beautiful mammals and an even better whale watching destination for vacationers.

OUTDOORS ADVENTURES
What to expect There are numerous tour companies who offer whale watching tours and they are not all the same. You can opt for a basic tour on a panga out in the Cabo San Lucas bay or experience the ultimate whale watching by taking a short flight up to Magdelena Bay where the mating happens. There is something for everyone when it comes to whale watching in Cabo San Lucas and it all depends on your available time and budget. You can get a glimpse into the life of the giant sea creatures for as little as $45 or as much as a few hundred bucks. As long as you head out on a tour from late December through March, you are almost guaranteed to see some amazing whales enjoying the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean. Although grey whales are often the main attraction because of their 6,000 miles migration to birth their calves, you might spot several other amazing species during a whale watching tour. Humpback whales, blue whales, sperm whales, finback whales, orcas, and bottlenose dolphins also love to swim in these waters. When the water is clear, you can also spot giant manta rays and sting rays below the surface.
When to go Whales watching can be great for up to five months a year, from December through April. Every year can be slightly different, and whales can show up as early as late November or as late as early January. To guarantee you witness the magnificent creatures, plan your vacation somewhere between January-March. These months see the most whale activity, especially in the Sea of Cortez and Cabo San Lucas Bay. December is almost always a good month for whale watching, but many of the grey whales are still birthing their calves farther up the coast and haven’t made it to Los Cabos yet. 51
OUTDOORS ADVENTURES
Where to go There are several top destinations for whale watching in Baja California Sur. Some are nearby Cabo San Lucas and others far enough away that you would need to take a short plane ride or a long all day excursion. Here are several locations where you can have a great whale watching experience: • Magdalena Whale Sanctuary • Cabo San Lucas Bay • Santa Maria Bay • La Unica near Bahia de Los Angeles • Bay of Banderas • Sea of Cortez What do I need to bring? Although you don’t need any special equipment to watch grey whales frolicking around in the warm waters of Baja California, there are a few suggested items to make your trip enjoyable. If you plan on getting up close and personal with whales, a waterproof camera is a good idea just to play it safe. You don’t want to lose all your Cabo pictures just because a whale nudged your boat or breached nearby. You also want to bring plenty of sunscreen and sunglasses. Cabo San Lucas almost always sunny and the light reflecting off the water will burn your skin quickly and be hard to stare at without glasses. If your trip is leaving early in the morning, the temperatures will be a bit cool so you should bring shoes (that you don’t mind getting wet), pants, and a jacket. Last but not least, do not forget to take sea sickness pills 30 minutes to one hour prior to your trip so you don’t ruin it for everyone. Source: Destination Cabo 52

YOUR CABO EVENT MADE FABULOUS
Few places compare with Cabo as a magical wedding or party destination. Whether it is a honeymoon, special birthday, family reunion, corporate retreat or wedding that brings you to Cabo, one thing is for certain — you will remember it forever.
Out of the ordinary location... Undoubtedly one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make when organizing your Cabo event is location. Several obvious options come to mind — resorts, beach clubs, or restaurants. But if what you’re looking for is intimacy and exclusivity, you may want to consider a private luxury villa.
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
...With countless advantages The advantages of renting a private villa for your event are many. In addition to privacy, you´ll have the flexibility to customize your menus and décor. You’ll also be able to stretch your budget without compromising the quality. Timing Although most rental companies recommend that you book five to eight months ahead of time, highly popular properties can fill up a year in advance. If you’re considering peak seasons such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year or Spring Break for your event in Los Cabos, book 9-12 months in advance. For other periods, you should be safe making your reservation 3-4 months in advance. Your Guest List If you’re planning a huge fête for 150 or 200 people, a private villa may not be the right option for you. However, if your idea is an intimate celebration for 2-50 people, you’ve found what you were looking for.

MEZCAL MARGARITA 2.0 Ingredients - 2 oz your prefered Mezcal - 1/2 oz lime juice - 1/2 oz grapefruit juice - 1/2 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur - 1 barspoon of agave nectar - 3 cucumber slices DirectionS 1) Add the cucumber slices, citrus and agave nectar to a mixing glass and muddle. 2) Add spirits then ice. 3) Shake and strain into a chilled coupe. 4) Garnish with a grapefruit twist. Difference between Tequila and Mezcal It is often said that “All Tequilas are Mezcals, but not all Mezcals are Tequilas” because they both share the heritage of the Agave. Tequila must be made from at least 51% Blue Agave and must be made in the tequila region of Mexico. Anything outside of the Tequila region is known as a Mezcal. Mezcal is allowed to be made from any species of agave including wild ones with really local and artisanal fermentation procedures. The famous gusano worm is only found in some Mezcals - never tequila. The gusano worm does not eat the blue agave. They only eat green agaves. 63

TIPS
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
DRIVING IN MEXICO:
A SHORT PRACTICAL GUIDE
1. Buy Mexican Auto Insurance. Mexican auto insurance is a must if you plan to do anything more than a quick hop across the border since, in the case of an accident Mexican authorities will not accept foreign auto insurance policies. Any Mexican auto insurance coverage you purchase should include claims adjusters that will come to the scene of an accident and an attorney. This becomes very important since, in the event of an accident, you are not allowed to move your vehicle and you may be detained by the police in the event that anyone is hurt until fault can be established. 2. Be aware that not all roads are in the best of conditions. Although over the last 6 to 8 years there has been an increase in the number of four-lane toll roads throughout the country, some of the minor roads, for instance those between small towns, are more likely to be paved with cobblestone instead of asphalt and, either way, they all have their share of pot holes and ruts to be careful about. 3. Although there are reports of people being stopped and their property being stolen while on an isolated road, there are few reports of people actually being injured. The best way to avoid this is to drive during the day and not to stop for hitchhikers. Also beware of any foreign objects in the road; these are normally placed there so that an unsuspecting driver will be forced to stop. 4. Try to restrict driving to daylight hours. This is common sense wherever you drive since road signs are easier to read, road hazards are easier to see and avoid and there are normally more cars traveling the same road you are so there is less chance of anything bad happening. Always be aware of livestock. On most U.S. roads, livestock is unheard of except in rural areas. In Mexico, however, livestock creates a large problem because of a lack of fencing around the highways. Livestock are normally left to roam wherever they can find food and this is sometimes near a well traveled road. Each year there are less and less sightings of livestock along the corridor highway. The new highway to La Paz also is wonderful as they have the entire highway fenced off so we won’t be seeing as many as before, but its always good to be aware.
68
5. Remember that most people do not use their turn signals and not all cars you see on the road have functioning brake lights. Avoid accidents by keeping your distance, using your turn signals and being aware of those who don’t.
the lifestyle magazine ·FEBRUARY 2013
TIPS
6. Always know who has the right of way. This is sometimes difficult because, even though you may be in the right, if the “the other guy” is bigger, he won’t care. This means you will want to slow down at all intersections and look both ways whether you are required to or not; it also means you will want to yield to larger vehicles that want to occupy your same lane space. 7. Always plan your trip ahead of time. Take a good road map along with you and know where your stops are going to be. In the old days, there were sections where you HAD to have an extra tank of gasoline as you wouldn’t make it, now a days, there are PEMEX stations everywhere, but a good rule of thumb is to not let your tank go below 1/4. 8. Remember that here, just as anywhere else; all those things you learned in driving school apply. Keep free space in front, behind and beside you when driving; obey the speed limits; use your turn signals; and always make sure your vehicle is in good condition and that you have plenty of spare parts (i.e. tire, water for the radiator, transmission fluid and oil) before beginning your journey. 9. Buy a basic Spanish phrase book before your trip. Learning how to tell someone you need a mechanic (necesito un mecánico), help changing a tire (necesito ayuda para cambiar la llanta) or directions (dónde está or cómo llego a) can be very useful. Even if you can’t pronounce it quite right, people will usually get the message and be able to effectively communicate to you what you need to know. 10. Mexico’s Driving Signs: you might want to print them out as a reference when driving down. Please keep in mind that measurements are specified in metric so make sure not to get cm and meters confused with feet and inches
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Just in case you’re considering risking the trip without Mexican auto insurance, consider the following: • Mexican law is Napoleonic (soon to change) — this means that you are guilty until proven innocent. The person deciding this will most likely be the policeman who arrives at the scene of the accident, especially if you cannot provide proof of Mexican auto insurance and/or failure to have an adjuster appear. • When a traffic accident does occur, the police may impound your vehicle, especially if there is no one there to help you defend your rights such as an insurance adjuster and/or an attorney. Also know that in the event that someone is injured and you are found responsible, you might not only be held liable for those person medical expenses but also for financially supporting them and their dependents until they recover. If you have an attorney he will probably be able to help you negotiate a more reasonable settlement than that which you could negotiate on your own.
