welcome to Home Run I’m a baseball fan… A Detroit Tiger fan to be exact! I speak baseball— which means that baseball language and analogies drift into my conversations as smoothly as a hanging curve ball on a hot summer day. I’m just begging you to hit it out of the ballpark. (Oh, if only my beloved Green Bay Packers were a baseball team!) I don’t blame you if that last sentence made no sense to you! I promise to keep the illustrations to those things about baseball that are commonly understood. We’ve got six amazing weeks ahead of us and I’m praying you’ll touch every base and make it home. I hope you’ll stay with us all the way as we look at life through the rules of baseball. Wait ’til you get to see where I got to stand as I taught the sessions for this series! I was on site at Dozer Park in downtown Peoria. Talk about atmosphere! All that was missing was the crack of the bat. We’re going to see together how life has certain rules and steps that are certain and unchanging—like the basics of baseball. God designed us and He had a certain kind of living in mind when he did it. The progression of living God’s way is as predictable as running the bases from first to second to third base and then home. There’s a purpose to living, too, and you can’t skip part of it and end up with a Home Run life. That’s what these weeks are all about: discovering God’s instructions about the basics of the game of life.

We’re also going to have a lot of fun together. We’ll listen to each other, talk to each other, and spend time giving special attention to God and the book He wrote. This is your chance to experience life with a growing group of friends. We’ve also planned some things for you to do between the small group sessions to keep things moving during the week. We trust you will find these helpful and challenging as you’re practicing how to live the Home Run life.

We’ve got six amazing weeks ahead of us and I’m praying you’ll touch every base and make it home.

If you’re a veteran of small groups, here’s your chance to help some other people get in the game. If this small group experience is new to you, you won’t need a batting helmet, but step up to the plate and participate. You will be glad you did. Be assured that I will be praying for you during these weeks we are meeting. I know God longs for you to have a Home Run life. And I know He intends Northwoods to be a place where teams are built, where the players depend on each other, cheer for each other, and celebrate each other’s victories! using this workbook TOOLS TO HELP YOU HAVE A GREAT SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCE. 1. Notice in the Table of Contents there are three sections: (1) Sessions; (2) Appendices; and (3) Small Group Leaders. Familiarize yourself with the Appendices. Some of them will be used in the sessions themselves.

2. If you are facilitating/leading or co-leading a

small group, the section Small Group Leaders will give you some hard-learned experiences of others that will encourage you and help you avoid many common obstacles to effective small group leadership.

3. Use this workbook as a guide. If the group

responds to the lesson in an unexpected but honest way, go with that. If you think of a better question than the next one in the lesson, ask it. Take to heart the insights included in the Frequently Asked Questions pages and the Small Group Leaders section.

outline of each session A typical group session for the Home Run study will include the following sections: INTRODUCTION. (2 minutes suggested) - Each lesson opens with a brief thought that will help you prepare for the session and get you thinking about the particular subject you will explore with your group. Make it a practice to read these before the session. OPEN UP. (20 minutes suggested) - The foundation for spiritual growth is an intimate connection with God and God’s family. You build that connection by sharing your experience with a few people who really know you and who earn your trust. This is helpful preparation for being able to share what Christ has done in your life with anyone you meet—which is what a disciple is ready to do. This section includes some simple questions to get you talking—letting you share as much or as little of your story as you feel comfortable doing. Each session typically offers you two options. You can get to know your whole group by using the icebreaker question(s), or you can check in with one or two group members, your spiritual partner(s), for a deeper connection and encouragement in your spiritual journey. TAKE IT IN. (Approximately 12 minutes) - Each week we will watch a brief video with Pastor Cal’s teaching for the session. Space is provided to take notes. TALK IT OVER. (20 minutes suggested) - In this section, you’ll read the Bible and reflect together on the teaching, in order to hear God’s story told through the life of Joseph—and begin to see how that story aligns with your story. Take turns reading the questions and make the decision to participate in the conversation. WORK IT OUT. (20 minutes suggested) - During this section the focus will be on personal application. Helping one another see how the insights from

the teaching and from Scripture can affect life where we live it and lead us further down the base path to a Home Run life. There will also be some time for quiet personal reflection in this section. STUDY NOTES. This section provides additional commentary, background or insights on the passage you will study in the Take It In and the Talk It Over sections. MOVE IT FORWARD. God wants you to be a part of God’s Kingdom—to weave your story into God’s story. That will mean change. It will require you to go His way rather than your own. This will not happen overnight, but it should happen steadily. By making small, simple choices, we can begin to change our direction. This is where the Bible’s instructions to “be doers of the Word, not just hearers” (James 1:22) comes into play. Many people skip over this aspect of the Christian life because it’s scary, relationally awkward, or simply too much work for their busy schedules. But Jesus wanted all of His disciples to know Him personally, carry out His commands, and help others connect with Him. This doesn’t necessarily mean preaching on street corners. It could mean welcoming newcomers, hosting a short-term group in your home, or walking through this study with a friend. In this study, you’ll have an opportunity to go beyond Bible study to biblical living. Part of Move It Forward will be an opportunity for WEEKLY MEMORY VERSES. Each session includes a Memory Verse that emphasizes an important truth from the session. This is an optional exercise, but we believe that memorizing Scripture can be a vital part of filling our minds with God’s truth. We encourage you to give this important habit a try. The verses for our six sessions and Tips for Scripture Memory are also listed in the appendix. REFLECT ON IT. Each week on the Daily Devotions pages we’re including Scriptures to read and reflect on between sessions. This provides you with a chance to slow down, read just a small portion of Scripture each day, and reflect and pray through it. You will then have a chance to journal your response to what you’ve read. Use this section to seek God on your own throughout the week. This time at home should begin and end with prayer. Try not to be in a hurry. Take enough time to hear God’s direction.

Don’t worry if you are not an avid baseball fan; the game can still be an amazing analogy of the kind of life God wants us to live…the kind of life we actually want to live, because that’s the way we are wired. Whether you realize it yet or not, following Jesus eventually shows us we were designed for the life He offers to us. It fits. It’s like coming home. God has a game plan for our lives. And most of it He has laid out in His Word. Let’s help one another during these weeks to get in the game. It’s time to play ball like never before!

WHO’S ON THE TEAM? As you begin, take time to pass around a copy of the Small Group Roster on page 154 or a sheet of paper. Have everyone write down their contact information. Ask someone to make copies, type it up and email it or take a picture and text it.

ORGANIZING THE TEAM: Whether your group is new or ongoing, it’s always important to reflect on and review your values together. On pages 134-135 is a Small Group Agreement with the values we’ve found most useful in sustaining healthy, balanced groups. We recommend that you choose one or two values—ones you haven’t previously focused on or have room to grow in—to emphasize during this study. Choose ones that will take your group to the next level of authentic friendship and spiritual health.

- If your group is new, you may want to focus on sharing group ownership. Any group will quickly move from being the leader’s group to being our group if everyone understands the goals and shares a small role. See the Small Group Calendar on page 136 for help on how to do this well. - We recommend that you rotate host homes on a regular basis and let the hosts lead the meeting. We’ve come to realize that healthy groups rotate leadership. This helps to develop every member’s ability to shepherd a few people in a safe environment. Even Jesus gave others the opportunity to serve alongside him (Mark 6:30–44). When its you’re your turn to host and lead, be sure to refer to the FAQs on page 130 for additional information.

talk it over It probably needs to be said that the point of our times together isn’t to create avid sports fans of all of us or convince any of us which is the greatest team ever (though some of us are sure what that is…). Our objective is to grow together during these weeks. So, let’s talk it over…

What is your initial reaction from what you just heard from Pastor Cal?

As you were growing up, did you have an idea (a dream) of what it would mean to “win” at life? Describe what that looked like.

astor Cal referred to the life of Joseph in Genesis 37-50 because he P embodies for us what it means to live by God’s game plan. Let’s take a look at where it all started… Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. 3

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it…” 10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” Genesis 37:2-7, 10 5

Describe Joseph’s family dynamics in this passage. Does it appear that he is winning at life? Why or why not?

Explain how Joseph might have realized God had a special plan for him even at a young age. How might this have been encouraging to him?

This study is going to be leading us through the principles that Joseph lived out in his life. Through his struggles and disappointments, he discovered how to win at life as he followed God.

work it out These sessions will probably stretch each of us in several ways. You might experience a deeper sense of God’s love and involvement in your life. You might also take new risks of personal disclosure with others in your group. This is an invitation, not pressure. Never feel forced to share what you’re not ready to share. But we can say from experience that even a little risk can benefit us greatly.

Can you think of situations where people have failed to touch all the bases and have ended up short-circuiting their effectiveness? (see the study notes below if needed)

In your life, what base have you dedicated most of your time and energy on winning (your strength)? How has that impacted your life?

What base have you possibly ignored (your weakness) and how has that impacted your life?

As a starting point, think for a moment about the four bases of God’s plan that Pastor Cal described: Connection, Character, Community, and Competence. Circle which one seems to fit where you are in life right now. Or maybe truthfully, you feel like you’re not even in the game…and that’s okay. Now, if you’re comfortable, share that with the group.

study notes C O ME B E FOR E GOD Don’t get overwhelmed. Simply ask God what is your next step. Get quiet for just 1 minute, close your eyes and clear your mind. In your mind ask God, “What immediate step should I take to change the way I do life?” Write down any thoughts, impressions, pictures or feelings you might have. If you want to share what you received with the group, feel free but there’s no obligation.

Joseph. He and his younger brother Benjamin were the only two children Jacob had with Rachel, his first love. Their ten older brothers and at least one sister were children Jacob fathered with Leah (Rachel’s sister) and two servant women (Bilhah and Zilpah). Blended families (and their complications) are not a new phenomenon in history. The formation of Jacob’s blended family is found in Genesis 29-30.

P R AY God, thank you that you sent Jesus so we could live life to the full. Guide us to take steps toward following you more each day. We know that you have the best plan for our lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Each day, read the selected verses and give prayerful consideration to what you learn about God, His Spirit, and His place in your life. This is the account of Jacob’s family line. When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.

REFLECT:

Several factors mentioned in these opening verses contributed to the poor relationship between Joseph and his brothers. What were those factors and how did Joseph unwisely add to the tension? Why is it worth remembering that Joseph wasn’t a perfect kid who ended up having some bad things happen to him?

REFLECT:

As we saw yesterday, Joseph had a habit of “telling” on his brothers. Then he informed them of his dreams, even describing the second one to his father, who immediately figured it out and wasn’t too thrilled about the picture of himself kneeling to his son. Why then does it say in verse 11 that “his father kept the matter in mind”?

As the oldest of all the brothers, what might have motivated Reuben to try to keep the hatred from getting out of hand? What examples come to mind when you think of difficult family situations where there were moments of undeniable goodness? What’s the significance of Reuben’s despair in vs. 29-30? Put yourself in Joseph’s place for a few minutes. What do you think he was thinking/feeling?

This is the first indication of God’s participation in Joseph’s story. When do you think Joseph acknowledged God previous to this? What kinds of perhaps very difficult situations has God used in your life to focus your attention on Him?

D AY 6 If you haven’t yet, read Genesis 37, 39 to sense the flow of Josephs story. Use the following space to summarize any thoughts God has put in your heart and mind about the things we have looked at in this session and during your Reflect On It time this week.

Compare Joseph’s relationship with his Dad/brothers and how that worked out alongside Joseph’s relationship with Potiphar, his wife, and household. What has Joseph learned? How does he understand his purpose in life, even as a slave?

And speaking of living, Paul wrote, “For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). Again, no worries if you are not an avid baseball fan; it’s only a matter of time. Just kidding! Baseball is giving us a helpful picture. Can you visualize being in a stadium sitting behind home plate and watching the players run the bases? The next batter steps up to the plate to connect with the ball, maybe even hit a home run. Just like the batter needs to connect with the ball to get a home run, we need to connect with God to win at life. As the master coach, God has a game plan for our lives. And most of it He has laid out in His Word. Let’s help one another during these weeks to get in the game. And let’s make sure we’re really in the game ourselves.

HOME PLATE: HOW TO WIN WITH GOD Welcome back to the Home Run life! Since this is only week two, there may be new faces in your group. Make sure to meet everyone. It’s a way, as we said last week to begin enjoying the company God put you with on this journey over the next few weeks. We also want to keep the end in mind, so this session is going to look at how we get into the batter’s box in God’s plan for living. We can’t score or do life well until we step up to the plate. It’s time to make sure we’re ready and lined up to hit a Home Run! 30

It’s not too late to invite others to participate in this small group. Each of us has a sphere of influence that we need to pray for and keep in mind as we pursue a Home Run life. In one way or another they are on this path with us. Take a look at the Circles of Life diagram below and write the names of two or three people you know who need to know Christ. ORGANIZING THE TEAM (Optional): Once again reflect on and review your values together. If new people have joined you for this session, review the Small Group Agreement on page 134. Also review the rotation of host homes so everyone is on the same page. Leaders should remember to refer to the FAQs in the Appendix for additional information. As you are inviting new people to the group, you might consider sub-grouping (refer to Leader Lifter 2 on DVD) so each person gets a chance to share. Just make sure each person is still receiving a copy of the prayer request for the entire group.

PRAYER PARTNERS: Pair up with someone in your group. (We suggest that men partner with men and women with women.) This person will be your spiritual partner for the rest of this study. He or she doesn’t have to be your best friend, but will simply encourage you to complete the goals you set for yourself during this study. Following through on a resolution is tough when you’re on your own, but we’ve found it makes all the difference to have a partner cheering us on. Refer to Spiritual Partners’ CheckIn on page 137. talk it over Since one of our main objectives is to grow together during these weeks, it’s crucial that we catch a glimpse how we’re thinking and responding to the teaching Pastor Cal is sharing with us. So, let’s talk it over…

When Pastor Cal said, “People who fail to connect with God are far more likely to make compromises in their character,” what kinds of situations come to mind? Why does a failure like this keep us from even making it to first base?

This study is going to be leading us through the principles that Joseph lived out in his life. During last week’s session and personal reflection times we looked at Joseph’s childhood and the sequence of disappointments that led to him being not only a slave but also in prison in Egypt in Genesis 37 and 39. Through his struggles and disappointments, he discovered how to win at life as he followed God. Notice the sequence of events in these verses:

Genesis 37: 19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt. 28

Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

Pastor Cal used Solomon and a player on the Minnesota Twins team to illustrate the point that leaving God out of even the most successful pursuits and achievements in life eventually erodes their significance. Why is that?

We heard Pastor Cal describe Bill Hybels’ experience with people who are about to reach the end of life. What two things do they really want to talk about? He quoted John 14:6 as the key to understanding a connection with God: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” What did he mean?

Genesis 39: 2 The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 19

Based on your introduction to Joseph, how would you describe his connection with God? How do we know that despite shortcomings, he made it to first base in living for God?

What can we learn from Joseph’s persistent movement toward God even though at the same time events he had little control over were delivering hardship into his life?

What are some of the things you’ve noticed that effectively keep people from ever really making a connection with God? They may even be regular at church but no evidence in their lives.

Let’s have a couple of people who are willing to share the circumstances surrounding the time when they connected with God through Christ.

One regular connection strengthener between us and God is the practice of Bible reading and study. Pastor Cal described an approach called SOAP which probably some of us have used: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Let’s take the following verse and apply SOAP to it. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons. The reason given in Genesis 37:3 is that Joseph was a child born late in life, although Benjamin came later. Possibly the difference is tied up in Rachel dying when giving birth to Benjamin. Some family dysfunctions aren’t intentional but that doesn’t prevent them from being devastating to relationships. Israel is the name Jacob was given by God in 32:28 after they wrestled all night. Reuben said this to rescue him. As the oldest heir, Reuben may have been watching out for his own interests in taking care of Joseph. The Lord was with Joseph (39:1, 21, 23). Too often we assume that connection with God is special protection from God that we get to specify. God demonstrates sovereignty in our situation by sometimes saving us from ourselves. All that God allows is eventually for our good. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God? Joseph demonstrated high moral fiber in a clear case of sexual harassment. He was arguing for the moral error of adultery that would be widely understood, but also adding his unwillingness to offend God with whom he had a growing connection. What can we say about the development of Joseph’s connection with God based on his response to the cupbearer and baker?

Inspite of Joseph’s request back in v. 14, the cupbearer forgot. What reasons can you think of for this failure? How do you think Joseph felt?

The “within” territory is character development; who you are even when no one is looking. Fortunately, we’ve been given a handbook to personal development. Here’s the way it describes itself in Second Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Those are the reasons we’ll keep referring to the Bible as we move through these lessons. Obviously, getting to first base in baseball isn’t a stopping point but a necessary objective. In life it’s the base that represents our internal development as persons. But, as Kevin Meyers makes clear in his book Home Run, the character base is often the most neglected area of attention. We can often seem to be achieving all kinds of other “bases” in life, but a lack of personal integrity and awareness of who we are will eventually undermine everything else. God has a game plan for our lives. And most of it He has laid out in His Word. Let’s continue to help one another during these weeks to get in the game. Team work is cheering one another along as we aim for a Home Run life.

talk it over Pastor Cal has certainly given us some things to think and talk about. That’s what we want to do now. Because each of us just heard what he was saying through the filter of our experiences, this is a valuable time for us all to learn from each other. Since we believe that God is working on each of us, it makes sense to think that the Lord might also want to work through each of us.

Pastor Cal summarized the problem of reaching first base this way: “People fail because they don’t win within; they don’t win character issues.” He mentioned that we see this in the lives of politicians, preachers, businesspeople, and sports figures all the time. A veneer of success or PR is shattered and the real person is revealed as something entirely different than their image. What are some significant “character issues” that turn out to make a huge difference in life?

We’ve just been reminded that Romans 8:29 describes part of God’s plan for all of us is to conform us to the image of His Son, which boils down to us becoming more and more like Jesus in our character. What are some of the obvious character traits Jesus had which any of us would want to emulate?

Pastor Cal referred to Joseph and his victory over the battle within. Most of us are familiar with his challenge to overcome the betrayal by his brothers, the humiliation of being sold into slavery, and the devastation of sexual harassment and false accusation that landed Joseph in prison. The passages from Genesis we’ve read this past week continued to bear out Joseph’s internal consistency. For example:

Genesis 40: 6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?” 8 “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Describe Joseph’s attitude toward the two servants of the king? What does it tell you about his character?

Despite all the setbacks Joseph had lived through up to the moment of standing before the king of Egypt, how did his answer to the Pharaoh reveal how he saw himself and how he saw God? (See the Study Notes if needed.)

How did Joseph manage to develop such character in an environment that was so demeaning and disappointing?

work it out We may never find ourselves in the Big Leagues or standing before the Pharaoh of Egypt, but we share a lot in common with those modern and ancient figures—we’re humans under development. None of us is complete (no matter what image we might be projecting). So now is the time to reflect on those other lives past and present, and start figuring out how we can benefit from their failures and successes. How can we get things right where they got them right and avoid the places where others have gotten things wrong? We can even learn from each other!

What situations in your life have been “character clarifiers” or personal training opportunities? Where can you see in your life right now opportunities for further character development? Allow a moment to contemplate this question.

Pastor Cal mentioned four choices we can consider that will help us grow in Christ-like character:

1) Practice a lifestyle of repentance; 2) Renounce bad habits in Jesus’ name; 3) Decide to start winning the 3-second windows; 4) Live a life of accountability. Who will take a shot at unpacking one of those in your own words?

Unfortunately, age is not always a measure of character. In what areas above do you realize you still need to develop in order to live as God would want you to live? Share this with your Prayer Partner; ask them to pray for your character change through your commitment and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams. It takes a growing character to know the difference between giving God credit and engaging in the process. Joseph was making it clear that the wisdom to interpret was God-given. Even though the cupbearer eventually remembered that Joseph had interpreted his dream, Joseph was consistent in giving credit where it was really due, with God.

P R AY God, thank you that you provided me with your Word to guide my life and teach me truth, confront my errors and sins, direct my living, and train my character. Help me to turn to You each day for guidance, knowing that on my own I can’t stay on the base path you want me to run. I’m depending on Jesus’ example and the Holy Spirit’s help. In His name, Amen.

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. 9 Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. OBSERVATION:

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened. 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!” 37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?” 28 They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him. 29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

Joseph is not going to go easy on his brothers. In what way is this man of character testing the character of his brothers?

What have you learned about God’s way of making things come full circle in life?

The passage goes on to report that this conversation caused Joseph to weep. They didn’t know he could understand what they were saying. What does this tell you about their awareness of their past wrongdoing?

“Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since. 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’ 30 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’

The apostle John had some sobering words to say about second base and winning with others: We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister (1 John 4:19-21). 19

So, John makes it clear that if we think we’ve touched first base and are well on our way to second, but we don’t love people, we missed the base. We haven’t gotten things straight with God. As Pastor Cal will remind us, we can convince ourselves that everything is fine with God and people, until we actually get people involved. Then it usually gets complicated! God has a game plan for our lives. And most of it He has laid out in His Word. The Bible definitely touches on this matter of our relationships with others and it illustrates how God does some of His best work in us during our interactions with others.

SECOND BASE: HOW TO WIN WITH OTHERS

Welcome to the Home Run life! We’re on our way to second base. You may have noticed last week that even though the development of character is a “within” process, the details of progress almost always involve other people. Character is internal, but it demonstrates its presence in our relationships with others. So naturally, now that we’ve spent a week on internal development it’s time to look at 70

how we are intentionally doing with the people around us. With that in mind, enjoy the company God put you with on this journey with a small group. talk it over As Pastor Cal put it, just as no one can play baseball and win by themselves, so we were never designed to win in life by ourselves. We need other people in our lives. And in order to live a Home Run life, we need to win with other people. This is that time when we work at winning alongside other people. Let’s think about this lesson together and explore what we can learn from our experiences. So, let’s talk it over…

Pastor Cal started talking about the “Fine” family and their pet elephant that is in the room but no one wanted to recognize it. Why does it seem so easy to ignore a major problem or dysfunction rather than talk about it?

Let’s talk about this statement: “Ironically, it’s usually a family who is willing to confess they are not fine and work through things that turns out to actually become fine. They become whole by dealing with the elephant in the room.” Let’s name some of the elephants we’ve seen take over our families.

How did the story of Pastor Cal’s mom help you understand the multi-generational effects that can ebb and flow because of a painful event or dysfunction that is never talked about?

Although Joseph wasn’t mentioned in the teaching for this session, it’s not hard to see that there were elephants stampeding through his family while he was working things out in Egypt. This week we’ve been reading and reflecting on Genesis 42-44. These three chapters describe how Joseph met up with his brothers a decade or more after they sold him off into slavery. Here are some choice moments in the two encounters they had:

Genesis 42:8-10 (NIV2011) During the first trip… 8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. 9 Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.” 10 “No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food. Genesis 42:21-23 (NIV2011) 21 They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.” 22 Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.” 23 They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter. Genesis 43:26-30 (NIV2011) During the second trip… 26 When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?” 28 They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him. 78

As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

Both Joseph and his brothers remember what happened in the past. How is he dealing with it differently than they are?

How did Joseph’s approach help his brothers finally confront the elephant in the room? In what ways did Joseph’s actions demonstrate he had forgiven his brothers even before he got around to telling them the news? H OM E

work it out These sessions continue to stretch each of us in different ways. Our willingness to disclose has probably already sent some elephants packing in our lives. But these conversations are not at all easy for us. Again, this is an invitation, not pressure. Never feel forced to share what you’re not ready to share. But we can say from experience that even a little risk can benefit us greatly.

This is about a lot more than sitting around and looking at other people’s problems. As Pastor Cal put it, “Every person you meet has a story, a struggle, a need to be loved and encouraged! They need to know that we’re for them, that we’ll love them in spite of the struggles they may be facing.” The “they” he is talking about includes all of us. In your life, what’s an elephant you might care to name?

Pastor Cal gave us five answers to the question: How can we win with people? Let’s talk about each of these. Someone summarize how you understood the point and the rest of us will listen, and then respond.

a. Invite God to heal your heart so you can be more “otherscentered.” b. Value others and put them first. c. Give more than you take. d. Forgive what you can’t forget. e. Let God change people!

Pastor Cal also closed with three questions he encouraged us to think about this week. Let’s start that process right now by reading them and then prepare ourselves to enter a quiet time below: a. P R AY Dear God, thank you for giving us the courage to face elephants in the room and even talk about them. Show us that their power is almost always what we give them by our silence. Help us to depend on the presence of your Holy Spirit when we face these scary things, because we do need your help. Show us that when we let you into these situations, amazing things happen. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

He remembered his dreams about them. He had told his brothers years before of dreaming they were bowing before him. Did he smile as that dream came true before his eyes? It appears Joseph felt no desire to taunt or relish the reversal of roles. The account says he wept several times. Genuine forgiveness has the quality of softening our responses so they can hardly be recognized against the offenses that caused pain. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen. Interestingly, the account of Joseph’s betrayal doesn’t mention any response on his part, but here the brothers remember that he pled with them. In the reversal of positions, the brothers are pleading with Joseph and he proves himself gracious.

Talk about the big reveal! Joseph finally tells his brothers who he is. Why do you think he wanted it to be just them and no one else in the room? Why does he immediately ask about Dad?

OBSERVATION:

What is Joseph doing about the elephant in the room? How does Joseph show them this is about so much more than him being a good brother and forgiving them?

How would you have responded if after doing something unbelievably cruel to another person they said, “I know you meant to hurt me, but God was actually involved in letting you do that so that He could do this other thing in me”?

What’s the closest you’ve ever been to one side or the other of an amazing encounter like this one? How would you define this as a big “win” for everyone involved?

Thirst Base: How to Win Results Welcome to the fifth session of Home Run life! We’re on our way to third. We stepped up to the plate in week one with conversations about our Connection with God. Then we headed for first base and a session on understanding the Character issues in our lives and how they affect everything else. Last week we visited second base and the role of Community, our relationships with others, particularly our family. And now we’re ready for Competence, the basic pursuits of life that bring about results. 90

Look around your group and consider what a variety of experiences, skills, talents, and spiritual gifts are present just among you. In many ways you are a team God brought together for this time. Continue to enjoy and benefit from one another’s contributions to the group. Each of you has a reason for being here that can help everyone else. We can cheer each other on to live the Home Run life. The apostle Paul helps us understand that results are always tied to reasons and purpose. He wrote, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23). You may not feel like a big league hitter yet, but God has a great track record of doing amazing things with lives that are turned over to Him with no strings attached. God is committed to the process that will lead you to a life worth living. Your part is to run the bases on the path God sets before you. God does have a game plan for our lives. And most of it He has laid out in His Word. Let’s continue to help one another as we run the base paths for the glory of God.

After quoting Colossians 3:23, Pastor Cal said, “As followers of Jesus, we ought to be known in the work place, or in anything we do, as people of excellence and hard work. Why? Because we’re not motivated simply by earthly rewards. We’re trying to please our true Boss, our Father who is the Owner of the team and his Son, our coach, the Lord Jesus Christ.” How might these ideas change the way we live and work?

In his explanation of developing potential and pursuing excellence, Pastor Cal shares four insights worth remembering:

a. If you’re going to win results and perform at your highest level, you’ll have to develop your talents to the fullest. (Finish the sentence) This means we can’t settle for…

b. Learn from your failures. This means we can’t settle for…

c. Give your best every day. This means we can’t settle for…

d. Sometimes have a funeral and get a new dream. This means we can’t settle for…

Pastor Cal referred to the pattern of pursuing excellence that stands out in the life of Joseph.

Genesis 39:2-4 (NIV2011) 2 The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 98

Genesis 39:20-23 (NIV2011) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Describe the approach and the personal character of Joseph that allowed him to pursue excellence whether he was the new slave in the house, the master’s right hand man, the latest addition to the cell block, or the trustee with the keys to the joint? What was the Lord’s part and what was Joseph’s part?

Of the four insights we discussed up in question 6, it would seem that Joseph never applied point “d”. Why do you think he didn’t have a funeral and look for a new dream even though his childhood vision was way in the rear view mirror?

work it out Up to this point in the session we get to watch and listen to other people as they work things out. We think about the parallels with our own lives and the lessons that might make sense where we live. Now it’s time to work out how those lessons actually apply in our situation. It’s important to keep an ear tuned for God’s voice along the way. And we can certainly benefit from the observations of others, who can sometimes see things in us we can’t see. This is an invitation to disclosure, not pressure. Never feel forced to share what you’re not ready to share. But we can say from experience that even a little risk can benefit us greatly.

There are two big theme words in this session: Competence and Excellence. How do you think they function in your life? For what pursuits is it valuable to maintain competence? In what areas should you really aim for excellence?

In discussing Joseph’s experience, Pastor Cal emphasized that “Joseph’s dream didn’t come to fruition in a day.” Thinking about his 20 year waiting in less-than-ideal circumstances, what does Joseph teach you about waiting?

All four of the insights noted in question 6 include the factor of time. Look at them again and share a personal illustration (like Pastor Cal did) of how you know that principle is true. C O ME B E FOR E GOD These four insights may feel overwhelming. One or more may provoke you to think, “I wish I had known this twenty years ago!” But our task is to move ahead. Life is ahead. Simply ask God what is your next step. Get quiet again for just 1 minute, close your eyes and clear your mind. In your mind ask God, “What gifts and talents have you given me? How can I use them more for your kingdom? What immediate step should I take to change the way I do life?” Write down any thoughts, impressions, pictures or feelings you might have. P R AY Lord, thank you for showing us that every aspect of the life you want us to live includes the failure factor. We fail miserably when we try to live on our own, and we still fail a lot when we’re living for and with you. We learn through failure. We survive failure because we remember that it trains us. We know that your grace and forgiveness covers even our failures like it covers our sins. Thank you for loving us so much that you gave us a full life in your Son and then promised to help us live it! Guide us to take steps toward following you more each day. The difficult circumstances he experienced were also a proving ground for his willingness to produce his best, even in situations where it might not have seemed like it mattered…until it did. b. Joseph learned from his failures and those of others. His character overcame his youthful pride and his working with others allowed him to learn and succeed even when others failed him (brothers, Potiphar and his wife). c. Joseph took it one day at a time. He was convinced the God above circumstances was guiding his life so he only had to be faithful in the immediate situations he faced. d. Joseph’s dream that wouldn’t die. Probably the key to understanding Joseph’s determination is that he understood he wasn’t responsible for his particular dream. It wasn’t about what he was going to do; it was a vision of what was going to happen. So his approach was to focus on the challenges and opportunities of each day as they came. He let God take care of the dream no matter how long it took.

3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’

OBSERVATION:

Compare the brothers’ response with Joseph’s instruction in 46:33-34. What does it tell you about Joseph’s role in their lives? Although shepherds were despised in Egypt, how did God take care of Jacob’s family?

Jacob blessed Pharaoh twice, the good words of an older man spoken into the life of a younger man who happened to be one of the most powerful people on earth. What makes a blessing like this significant, no matter who gives it?

SCORING: HOW TO KEEP LIVING AND WINNING GOD’S WAY

We began this journey with Jesus’ words from John 10:10b “… I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Let’s end with something else the Lord said about how to live that life: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Just to mention baseball one more time, hitting a home run usually doesn’t mean the game is over. You and I don’t know what inning we’re in. There are more times at bat, more bases to run, more chances to score. This time we’re learning about the last five words in what Jesus said above: glorify your Father in heaven. That phrase is one way to describe the kind of life we actually want to live; because that’s the way we are wired. Our lives lived at their very best, serve no higher purpose than to glorify our Father in heaven.

Welcome to this last session of Home Run, but by no means the last experience of the Home Run life! Look around your group again. When we started six weeks or more ago, we encouraged you to enjoy the company God put you with on this journey. Hopefully that has happened in ways you couldn’t imagine at the time. We also hope you are now convinced as never before that God has a plan for living that will help His people do life well. And we trust you have made a deeper level of commitment to live life to the full. 110

Pastor Cal gave us three big examples of living for God’s glory. How would you explain to someone the big idea of simply living all of life to the glory of God (according to Matt. 5:16)? What does it mean to glorify God?

Pastor Cal referred to Solomon in his teaching as someone who started out with everything going for him and ended up throwing most of it away. Throughout these sessions we’ve been thinking about Joseph, who started out with little and ended up basically where Solomon started—at the top.

From what you know of Solomon and Joseph, how did the quality and changes in their relationship with God influence the trajectory of their lives?

Genesis 50:19-21 19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don’t be afraid. Pastor Cal pointed out that instead of making any claims related to what he had done to overcome the setbacks and injustice in his life, Joseph told his brothers they needed to get over blaming themselves. How is the statement above an amazing example of glorifying God?

work it out Batting practice, fielding drills, physical exercises, and weight training all come at athletes in both concentrated and measured out ways. Our sessions together may feel like training camp for you—survival mode. We’ve gotten concentrated doses of very healthy spiritual practices and insights that will help us in the long season ahead. For now, we need to benefit from everything and excel in some things. We’re all working it out. And the “it” is our day by day relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s by His presence and power that we live the Home Run life.

C O ME B E FOR E GOD Each of the last four questions may have felt like a sandbag landing on your head. But perhaps at least one was a breath of fresh air in knowing you really are on the base path God wants you to run. As we’ve said each time, don’t get overwhelmed by the size of the task. Simply ask God what your next step is and set yourself to depend fully on Him. He is eager to help you live for His glory. Get quiet for just 1 minute, close your eyes and clear your mind. In your mind ask God, “What do you think of me, Lord? How do I glorify you right now in my life? How can I do more to glorify you? What immediate step should I take to change the way I do life?” Write down any thoughts, impressions, pictures or feelings you might have. If you want to share what you received with the group, feel free but there’s no obligation.

study notes God intended it for good. Joseph doesn’t mince words in describing his brothers’ intentions to do evil, but he reminds them they were not the only players in the picture. God was also at work, and His intentions over-rode what was done to Joseph. Note the similarity between Josephs words and Paul’s claim centuries later, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”. (Romans 8:28) Glory, glorify. The word, used often in both Old and New Testament has to do with “weight, importance, significance,” all traits that with God are “off the charts.” When we glorify God we are properly and persistently acknowledging His role and importance in everything we do, as well as giving God full credit for everything done.

OBSERVATION:

But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, 25 because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below, blessings of the breast and womb.

Given the definition of blessing we thought about last week, read over this entire chapter of Jacob’s blessing of his sons and note thoughts that might affect the way you treat those you love. What were the boys expecting from their father? What did they get?

APPLICATION:

This fascinating part of Jacob’s blessing of Judah has been considered by both Jews and Christians as a prophetic glimpse into God’s choice of the royal line for Israel, out of which Jesus would eventually be born. How does this appear to be a messianic statement (a foretelling of Jesus coming)?

OBSERVATION:

This section of Joseph’s blessing seems to indicate that Jacob realized his son’s life had been lived to the glory of God. What examples can you find?

In what ways are you speaking or delivering good into other people’s lives?

How much does your family know about your hopes for the future?

So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them: 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

The other aspect of relationships that goes with blessing is honor—expressing in various ways the value or worth of someone else. How did Jacob’s sons honor him?

Who are the people in your life worthy of honor, and what are your plans to make Again, what parts of your personal history that happen? can you label as things that have glorified God?

FAQs What do we do on the first night of our group?

How long will this group meet? Like all fun things in life–have a party! A “get to know you” coffee, dinner, or dessert is a great way to launch a new study. You may want to review the Group Agreement (pages 134-135) and share the names of a few friends you can invite to join you. But most importantly, have fun before your study time begins.

Where do we find new members for our group?

This can be troubling, especially for new groups that have only a few people or for existing groups that lose a few people along the way. We encourage you to pray with your group and then brainstorm a list of people from work, church, your neighborhood, your children’s school, family, the gym, and so forth. Then have each group member invite several of the people on his or her list. No matter how you find members, it’s vital that you stay on the lookout for new people to join your group. All groups tend to go through healthy attrition—the result of moves, releasing new leaders, ministry opportunities, and so forth—and if the group gets too small, it could be at risk of shutting down. If you and your group stay open, you’ll be amazed at the people God sends your way. The next person just might become a friend for life. You never know!

It’s totally up to the group—once you come to the end of this 6-week study. Most groups meet weekly for at least their first 6 weeks, but every other week can work as well. We strongly recommend that the group meets for the first six months on a weekly basis if at all possible. This allows for continuity, and if people miss a meeting they aren’t gone for a whole month. At the end of this study, each group member may decide if he or she wants to continue on for another study. Some groups launch relationships for years to come and others are stepping-stones into another group experience. Either way, enjoy the journey.

Can we do this study on our own?

Absolutely! This may sound crazy, but one of the best ways to do this study is not with a full house but with a few friends. You may choose to gather with another couple who would enjoy some relational time (perhaps going to the movies or having a quiet dinner) and then walking through this study. Jesus will be with you even if there are only two of you (Matthew 18:20).

You’re not alone! This could be the result of a personality conflict, life stage difference, geographical distance, level of spiritual maturity, or any number of things. Relax. Pray for God’s direction, and at the end of this 6-week study, decide whether to continue with this group or find another. You don’t typically buy the first car you look at or marry the first person you date, and the same goes with a group. However, don’t bail out before the 6 weeks are up—God might have something to teach you. Also, don’t run from conflict or prejudge

Who is the leader?

people before you have given them a chance. God is still working in your life, too! Most groups have an official leader. But ideally, the group will mature and members will rotate the leadership of meetings. We have discovered that healthy groups rotate hosts/leaders and homes on a regular basis. This model ensures that all members grow, give their unique contribution, and develop their gifts. This study guide and the Holy Spirit can keep things on track even when you rotate leaders. Christ has promised to be in your midst as you gather. Ultimately, God is your leader each step of the way.

How do we handle the childcare needs in our group?

Very carefully. Seriously, this can be a sensitive issue. We suggest that you empower the group to openly brainstorm solutions. You may try one option that works for a while and then adjust over time. Our favorite approach is for adults to meet in the living room or dining room and to share the cost of a babysitter (or two) who can watch the kids in a different part of the house. This way, parents donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be away from their children all evening when their children are too young to be left at home. A second option is to use one home for the kids and a second home (close by or a phone call away) for the adults. A third idea is to rotate the responsibility of care for the children, either in the same home or in another home nearby. This can be an incredible blessing for kids. Finally, the most common solution is to decide that you need to have a night to invest in your spiritual lives individually or as a couple and to make your own arrangements for childcare. No matter what decision the group makes, the best approach is to dialogue openly about both the problem and the solution.

S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method Scripture

Take a verse or passage, pray over it and then read through slowly. Read through it several times. Allow God to speak to you. When reading a large passage, God will direct your attention to a certain verse or section. Write these down in your workbook or journal and focus your study there.

Observation

What do I see God saying in this Scripture? To search out the meaning of a verse or passage is like detective work. Is there a declaration of truth, a promise? Is there a command or exhortation? Is there a warning? Record your observations. Paraphrase and write this scripture down in your own words in your journal. Ask, “How would I explain the Scripture if I was teaching it to someone else?”

After you have done your observations and made your findings as to what the verse(s) is saying, you move on to application. You ask the next question, “What does this (your observations) mean for me? Ask God to help you understand what the verse means and help you to be able to live it out in your daily life. Prayer is so powerful.

emorize the reference. Say it out loud with the reference (e.g., M John 3:16) once at the beginning of the verse, once at the end. This way, you’ll memorize the reference faster.

Write the verses on index cards with colored markers. Post these around your room in places you go most (your bed, above your light switch, your bathroom mirror, etc.)

Repeat the verse out loud. Focus on pronouncing each word clearly.

Hosting an Open House If you’re starting a new group, try planning an “open house” before your first formal group meeting. Even if you have only two to four core members, it’s a great way to break the ice and to consider prayerfully who else might be open to joining you over the next few weeks. You can also use this kick-off meeting to hand out study guides, spend some time getting to know each other, discuss each person’s expectations for the group and briefly pray for each other. A simple meal or good desserts always make a kick-off meeting more fun. After people introduce themselves and share how they ended up being at the meeting (you can play a game to see who has the wildest story!), have everyone respond to a few icebreaker questions: - What is your favorite family vacation? - What is one thing you love about your church/our community? - What are three things about your life growing up that most people here don’t know?

Remember who is in control; the time to worry is when you’re not worried. Those who are soft in heart (and sweaty palmed) are those whom God is sure to speak through. Seek support. Ask your leader, co-leader, or close friend to pray for you and prepare with you before the session. Walking through the study will help you anticipate potentially difficult questions and discussion topics. Bring your uniqueness to the study. Lean into who you are and how God wants you to uniquely lead the study. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Go through the session several times. If you are using the DVD, listen to the teaching segment and Leader Lifter each week. Consider writing in a journal or fasting for a day to prepare you for what God wants to do. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare. Ask for feedback so you can grow. Perhaps in an email or on cards handed out at the study, have everyone write down three things you did well and one thing you could improve on. Don’t get defensive. Instead, show an openness to learn and grow. Use online resources. This doesn’t need to happen overnight, but God’s heart is for this to take place over time. Not all Christians are called to be leaders or teachers, but we are all called to be “shepherds” of a few someday. Share with your group what God is doing in your heart. God is searching for those whose hearts are fully his. Share your trials and victories. We promise that people will relate. Prayerfully consider whom you would like to pass the baton to next week. It’s only fair. God is ready for the next member of your group to go on the faith journey you just traveled. Make it fun, and expect God to do the rest.

Leadership Training 101 Congratulations! You have responded to the call to help shepherd Jesus’ flock. There are few other tasks in the family of God that surpass the contribution you will be making. As you prepare to lead, whether it is one session or the entire series, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind. We encourage you to read these and review them with each new discussion leader before he or she leads. 1. Remember that you are not alone. God knows everything about you, and He knew that you would be asked to lead your group. Remember that it is common for all good leaders to feel that they are not ready to lead. Moses, Solomon, Jeremiah and Timothy were all reluctant to lead. God promises, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Whether you are leading for one evening, for several weeks, or for a lifetime, you will be blessed as you serve. 2. Don’t try to do it alone. Pray right now for God to help you build a healthy leadership team. If you can enlist a co-leader to help you lead the group, you will find your experience to be much richer. This is your chance to involve as many people as you can in building a healthy group. All you have to do is call and ask people to help. You’ll probably be surprised at the response. 3. Just be yourself. If you won’t be you, who will? God wants you to use your unique gifts and temperament. Don’t try to do things exactly like another leader; do them in a way that fits you! Just admit it when you don’t have an answer, and apologize when you make a mistake. Your group will love you for it, and you’ll sleep better at night! 4. Prepare for your meeting ahead of time. View the DVD session and the Leader Lifter. Write down your responses to each question in the workbook. Pay special attention to exercises that ask group members to do something other than engage in discussion. These exercises will help your group live what the Bible teaches, not just talk about it. Be sure you understand how an exercise works, and bring any necessary supplies (such as paper and pens) to your meeting. If the exercise employs one of the items in the appendix, be sure to look over that item so you’ll know how it works. Finally, review “Outline for Each Session” so you’ll remember the purpose of each section in the study. 5. Pray for your group members by name. Before you begin your session, go around the room in your mind and pray for each member by name. You may want to review the prayer list at least once a week. Ask God to use your time together to touch the

SMALL GROUP LEADERS heart of every person uniquely. Expect God to lead you to whomever He wants you to encourage or challenge in a special way. If you listen, God will surely lead! 6. When you ask a question, be patient. Someone will eventually respond. Sometimes people need a moment or two of silence to think about the question. Keep in mind, if silence doesn’t bother you, it won’t bother anyone else. After someone responds, affirm the response with a simple “thanks” or “good job.” Then ask, “How about somebody else?” or “Would someone who hasn’t shared like to add anything?” Be sensitive to new people or reluctant members who aren’t ready to say, pray or do anything. If you give them a safe setting, they will blossom over time. 7. Provide transitions between questions. When guiding the discussion, always read aloud the transitional paragraphs and the questions. Ask the group if anyone would like to read the paragraph or Bible passage. Don’t call on anyone, but ask for a volunteer, and then be patient until someone begins. Be sure to thank the person who reads aloud. 8. Break up into small groups each week or they won’t stay. If your group has more than seven people, we strongly encourage you to have the group gather sometimes in discussion circles of three or four people during the Talk It Over or Work It Out sections of the study. With a greater opportunity to talk in a small circle, people will connect more with the study, apply more quickly what they’re learning and ultimately get more out of it. A small circle also encourages a quiet person to participate and tends to minimize the effects of a more vocal or dominant member. It can also help people feel more loved in your group. When you gather again at the end of the section, you can have one person summarize the highlights from each circle. Small circles are also helpful during prayer time. People who are unaccustomed to praying aloud will feel more comfortable trying it with just two or three others. Also, prayer requests won’t take as much time, so circles will have more time to actually pray. When you gather back with the whole group, you can have one person from each circle briefly update everyone on the prayer requests. People are more willing to pray in small circles if they know that the whole group will hear all the prayer requests. 9. Rotate facilitators weekly. At the end of each meeting, ask the group who should lead the following week. Let the group help select your weekly facilitator. You may be perfectly capable of leading each time, but you will help others grow in their faith and gifts if you give them opportunities to lead. You can use the Small Group Calendar to fill in the names of all meeting leaders at once if you prefer. 10. One final challenge (for new or first time leaders): Before your first opportunity to lead, look up each of the five passages listed below. Read each one as a devotional exercise to help equip yourself with a shepherd’s heart. Trust us on this one. If you do this, you will be more than ready for your first meeting. Just like in the game of baseball, the way to win in life involves a clear path, some guiding principles, a great team, and a lot of fun. Through this message series and group video study, you’ll come to understand that advancing toward victory in life is like rounding the bases in baseball. You can’t skip any bases if you want to have a Home Run life!

CALVIN RYCHENER Cal Rychener was born in Archbold, Ohio and attended Fort Wayne Bible College from 1977-1981, graduating with a B.A. in Pastoral Ministries. He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, in June of 1985. In addition to his love for the local church, Cal has two other great passions. First and foremost, are his wife, Susan, and their family– Kathryn, Andy & Avery Rogers, Jonathon & Michaela, Victoria and Kody Pinson and Nathan. Running a distant second is his love for the Green Bay Packers, for whom he has been a guest chaplain. Cal is also the author of two books, Living at a Higher Level of Faith and God Can.
