LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT TM

TM

Thank you

for joining me and your fellow Running Eagles fans for another exciting season of Life University basketball. We have so many incredible achievements behind us – since our return to competition in 2008, we’ve put up three consecutive 20win seasons (last year, with 19 wins, we came close to making it four) and capped our 20th anniversary season with a fourth trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. We can’t wait to see what successes the 2012-2013 season holds in store. Life University operates on a philosophy of peak performance – in the classroom, on the court and within the community. Our student-athletes are living examples of this commitment. We’re proud of our multiple NAIA national championships and conference championships (including last year’s sweep of the A.I.I. Championship), and our three outstanding All-Americans. And, we’re proud of the dozens of hours our basketball team has invested in volunteer projects spanning from the Special Olympics to community gardening. Our players aren’t just leaders in the game, they’re leaders in life. Like all Life University students, faculty and staff, our basketball team is also leading the way to a healthier, higher-performing vision of health care. As an institution specializing in health science degrees, we take great pride in helping our players – and everyone who sets foot on campus or in our clinics – realize their optimal wellness potential. Through state-of-the-art, peak-performancebased programs and facilities like our LIFE Sport Science Institute, innovative new Functional Neurology Center, Center for Health and Optimum Performance and our cutting-edge chiropractic, sport science and nutrition programs, there is no better place for our athletes to learn, train and grow. Your support helps make it all possible. Thank you for attending tonight’s game, and for being a fan of LIFE. Go Running Eagles! Sincerely,

Guy F. Riekeman, DC President

Friends of Life University Athletics, Welcome to the 2012-2013 Running Eagles basketball season! Whether this is your first time at a Life University basketball game or your 100th, the Department of Athletics extends our sincere thanks to fans at home and in the local community for your support. For four consecutive years, Life University has been selected as an NAIA five-star Champions of Character Institution based on values like character training, conduct in competition and academics. In addition, we put a lot of focus into volunteering in the local community through Life University’s “Serving Lasting Purpose” initiative. In the 2011-2012 season alone, our sports teams volunteered for dozens of opportunities including the Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box Derby, The Center for Family Resource’s “Thanks for Giving” Thanksgiving food drive, “Love the Loop” community clean-up and Cobb County’s Special Olympics. Our mission this year is to further our reach here on campus and in the local community through servant leadership. As Life University’s Champions of Character liaison, I am constantly searching for opportunities for our teams to provide service to local organizations. If this sounds like something your group would be interested in, please contact me. Our team worked hard this year to create a media guide that could top last year’s 20th anniversary, award-winning edition. I hope you will find the following pages to be an insightful and entertaining guide to LIFE basketball. will be Josh Lee’s first full season in a LIFE jersey. He is a hard working, physical player and will make a difference on the team this year.

Life University’s Head Basketball Coach

John Barrett is back for his sixth year in the Eagles’ Nest and optimism and high expectations abound for this year’s squad. Combine eight returners from last year with the arrival of nine talented new faces and you can see why life is good for the Running Eagles. At first glance you’ll notice an immediate difference in the look of this team. According to the official roster, only one player stands under 6-ft tall and ten are listed as 6’5” or taller. “This is by far the tallest group we’ve ever had,” said Barrett. “The talent and skills are there to make a very strong and competitive team.” Returning Players All eight of Life University’s returning players are seniors. The Running Eagles welcome back last-season starter Andrew Woods who proved last year that he’s a hardworking, high-energy and very capable center. Big-man Ramon Walker is back under the rim and a major factor for LIFE’s defensive strategy this season. An all-around great athlete with quickness and strength, Barrington Ferguson returns to the court for his fourth year with the Running Eagles. De’Andre Cannon brings his energetic approach back to the game with great shooting ability and all-around versatility. Michael Robertson was a part-time starter last season with great post-moves and excellent rebounding. Outstanding shooting guard, Chris Beasley, is back to make an impact for the Running Eagles offense this season. This year

Talented, 6’10” forward Dennis Harris is an athletic shooter and ties with former player Marvin Childs (1995-96) for tallest Running Eagle in history. Senior Bobby Smith is a strong and hardworking point guard from Rome, Ga. Greg Thomas comes to LIFE as a senior from Savannah, Ga. He’s an explosive leaper and exciting shooting guard. Junior Quint Clinkscales is a strong and versatile forward from Hartwell, Ga. One of the highest leapers to ever play for the Running Eagles, center Stefan Pope, enters LIFE as a senior from Atlanta. Junior LaTarrance Carter is a point guard from College Park, Ga. who transferred to LIFE this year from Florida State College at Jacksonville. Trey Payne comes to LIFE this year as a senior point guard from Memphis, Tenn. “We are very excited about the nucleus of returning players and the addition of a very talented group of newcomers. This year’s team will have greater depth at every position, with several players having the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. Having this flexibility could lead to difficult match-ups for our opponents,” said Barrett.

2011-2012 season recap TM

The 2011-2012 season was one of extreme ups and downs for the Life University men’s basketball team as they strived to maintain their normal standard of excellence during the 20th year of their storied program. The regular season welcomed stunning wins over teams like No. 4 Mountain State of Beckley, W.Va. and No. 5 Georgetown at home. To top it off, LIFE’s threegame run to sweep the Association of Independent Institutions’ Championship Tournament birthed an automatic bid to Kansas City when the Running Eagles astonished the No. 2-seeded California State University San Marcos (19-12) by a 90-65 final. This year marked LIFE’s fourth consecutive appearance at the NAIA National Tournament and their 13th alltime. The Running Eagles were handed a tough matchup against the no. 1 Shorter in the opening round (who eventually went on to finish 3rd). The Hawks jumped out with an early lead, and LIFE never found the momentum to make a comeback. They suffered their final loss of the season, 105-93, and finished with a 1915 record. The team was led by senior co-captains PJ Meyers and Mico Sjekloca. In just two seasons, Meyers broke eight Life University records, both career and single-season. Sjekloca climbed into the top 10 all-time LIFE leaders for career blocks (#7), career rebounds (#10), singleseason rebounds (#6), and single-season blocks (#7). Meyers, Sjekloca and fellow senior Pete Driver were selected to the 2012 A.I.I. All-Tournament team.

TM

As a team, the Running Eagles averaged 90.72 points per game. They finished the season nationally ranked No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game (18.2); No. 2 in scoring offense per game (90.7) and total rebounds per game (43.5); No. 3 in total scoring offense (3,085) and total rebound offense (1,480); No. 4 in steals per game (11.5); No. 5 in total steals (391) and No. 8 in total blocks (143). “We finished off another great season with numerous national rankings, another A.I.I. Conference Championship, our fourth straight appearance at the NAIA National Tournament and our 26th NAIA AllAmerican. The team can certainly be proud of their accomplishments from this past year and build on its successes as we prepare for the 2012-2013 season,” said Director of Athletics John Barrett. Life University will enter the 2012-2013 season without the help of former seniors Meyers, Sjekloca, Driver, James Willis and Dajuwan “DC” Carter. Returning players include Barrington Ferguson, Andrew Woods, Ramon Walker, De’Andre Cannon, Josh Lee, Chris Beasley and Mike Robertson.

HEADER HEAD COACH JOHN BARRETT TM

TM

TM

JOHN BARRETT

Director of Athletics, Head Basketball Coach

John Barrett has coached the Running Eagles through two decades of unprecedented success. With his leadership, Life University men’s basketball program has earned three NAIA National Championships, a regional or conference title every year from 1991-1998, and 13 National Tournament appearances. This season marks Barrett’s sixth year as Director of Athletics, sixth year as Head Coach for the men’s basketball team and sixteenth season coaching the Running Eagles. Throughout his career at LIFE, Coach Barrett has been responsible for recruiting 26 All-Americans: first team Jerry Jones, Billy Lewis, Curtis Carrington, John Brown and Jimmie Hunter, second team Richard Dodson, Jamaal Horton, Corey Evans and Tay Barber, third team PJ Meyers, Don Smiley and Anthony Maxwell, and honorable mention Robert Richburg, James Harris, Antwon Hall, Demetrius Palmer, Chummy Johnson, Greg Brown, and James Hooper. Originally from Atlanta, Barrett helped develop the successful Running Eagles defensive philosophy of pressing full court and forcing an up-tempo game. The aggressive style takes full advantage of the Running Eagles’ quickness and athletic abilities. Barrett began his coaching career as assistant coach at Marietta High School and his success netted him and his team a state championship in 1983. After leaving the high school ranks, he helped develop the first basketball team at rival Kennesaw State University. While at Kennesaw he also coached the baseball team. Barrett has spent time consulting and scouting for several NCAA Division I basketball teams. Since his return to Life University as Director of Athletics in 2006, Barrett has completely renewed the intramural and club sports programs that were dormant for over five years. The rugby program receives more international recognition than ever, and now boasts two men’s teams: the Men’s Division 1 squad, which finished runnerup in the national championship match in 2011, and the all-undergraduate team in the College Premier Division, which reached the national semifinals last season. Coach Barrett graduated from Oglethorpe University and was a member of both the basketball and baseball teams. He and his wife Anna have been married for nine years. Coach Barrett has two grown sons, Philip and Matthew.

Life University’s Mico Sjekloca garnered the Champions of Character award and received one of five Pattison Family Foundation Scholarships during the 2012 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Men’s Basketball Championship. Each year, the Pattison Family recognizes select student-athletes at the Tournament who excel both on and off the court. There are three key areas in which the Pattison Family selects their scholarship winners: leadership, academics and community involvement. Sjekloca was selected co-captain of the 2011-2012 Running Eagles team for his hard work and outstanding leadership abilities. His enthusiasm for the sport makes him a crowd favorite. Not only is he a leader on the court, but he also leads his team in the classroom, boasting the highest grade point average on the team. Sjekloca led the charge in several volunteer efforts this season including: building a playground for children at the local non-profit Mothers Making a Change, sorting and distributing food at the Thanksgiving food drive for Marietta’s Center for Family Resources, and assisting middle school competitors at the Kiwanis Club Soap Box Derby. Sjekloca is passionate about two things: school and basketball. Despite being an international student (from Montenegro) and having to learn the language and the culture, Sjekloca has not been deterred from achieving his academic goals and pursuing his dream of graduating with a master’s degree. He is a Dean’s List student who strives for excellence in everything he does. His attitude for achieving his goals on and off the court has been contagious. Sjekloca is not only a true leader and a tremendous basketball player, he is also an outstanding individual who looks to help others first.

Running Eagles Commit to Serve Our Community Life University’s Lasting Purpose represents a commitment “To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve out of a sense of abundance.” It calls upon us to act from a place of gratitude and to use our gifts for the benefit of others. Life University’s Department of Athletics engages our student-athletes in the Lasting Purpose initiative. Every quarter, our sports teams go into the community to serve in a variety of capacities. In 2012, the Running Eagles participated in dozens of volunteer efforts, including: The Center for Family Resources’ ‘Thanks for Giving’ program, The Kiwanis Club’s annual Soap Box Derby,

Cobb County’s Special Olympics, Keep Marietta Beautiful’s ‘Love the Loop’ clean-up program, the Allgood Community Garden Project, Mothers Making a Change renovation and playground facility, and many, many more. Serving our community is a huge part of being a Running Eagle and representing Life University. When we give, we receive, and then we give more. We look forward to partnering with even more groups and local organizations, and we intend to serve our community to an even greater extent in 2013.

“Champions of character are developed when no one is watching.” In the NAIA, a dedication to leadership development is balanced with sports accomplishment. A trailblazer in providing equal opportunity for all student-athletes. An expectation of ethical behavior, fairness in competition, access to athletic scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership development. At the core of all of this — character. The seed of the NAIA began in 1937 with the tip-off of a men’s basketball tournament that has become the longest running basketball tournament in the country, celebrating 75 years in 2012. Out of the tournament grew the NAIA, an association of close to 300 member schools and more than 60,000 studentathletes. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Most recently, the association opened the doors to the NAIA Eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are evaluated for academic and athletic eligibility. It delivers on our larger promise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competition. Providing student-athletes a chance to connect with NAIA schools and coaches helps them make the best decision to prepare them for success in both college and athletics.

Champions of Character The mission of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character Program is to provide training to ensure character is demonstrated through conduct as well as competition, so students know, do and value the right thing in all areas of life. By the age of 13, 70% of youth drop out of organized youth sports, most often saying it’s because they’re not having fun anymore. Research shows that the longer a student spends in sports, their social reasoning - sacrificing for the good of the team - rises, however, their moral reasoning skills - doing what is fair, just, honest, and noble - decline. The result is athletes are willing to lie, cheat, and steal to get their teammates ahead. Through the Champions of Character program, the NAIA is promoting five core character values that are crucial to the development of our youth: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Over time, valuable life lessons — working together for team goals, building personal strength of purpose to achieve victory, and sharing in the proper winning (or losing) spirit-can be instilled in sports participants. At the same time, the expectations that coaches and parents have for the athletes they support have led to conduct that detracts from the sports experience. Poor demonstrations of character are easily copied by young athletes. However, when athletes develop their skills in an environment in which adults’ actions foster character-driven conduct, they are bound to do the same. Inherent to the Champions of Character process is the belief that character is handed down from one generation to the next. When those who provide athletic opportunities are willing to commit to characterdriven athletics and put the athlete first both the game and society overall benefit.

Men’s Rugby Life University’s rugby program is recognized as one of the top in the country. LIFE fields three teams including the Men’s Division 1, undergraduate Division I-A and Men’s Sevens. The Men’s Division 1 is the closest thing to professional rugby in the United States. Comprised of our master’s and doctoral students, our men’s team won the national championship in 2000 and have finished in the top four in the country each of the past three seasons.

Undergraduate

The purpose of Life University Athletics is to enhance the overall student experience by creating opportunities for physical development in addition to their strive for academic success. LIFE Athletics provides a variety of sporting activities for students from intense daily competition to quarterly group activities.

Intercollegiate Sports Life University has a proud tradition of excellence in various intercollegiate sports. Over the years, the Running Eagles have won 24 national championships at various levels since the inception of the athletic program. Currently, LIFE has four teams competing at this level and plans are underway to expand even more. Our current intercollegiate sports include:

Men’s Basketball The Running Eagles men’s basketball program celebrated 20 years of historic success during the 2011-2012 season. During that time the team has won three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I championship titles in 1997, 1999 and 2000. The Running Eagles have competed in four national championship games and made 13 national tournament appearances in only 15 seasons. The Running Eagles boast 26 NAIA All-Americans, three National Tournament MVP’s and one National Player of the Year. This year is the inaugural season for Life University as a member of the TranSouth conference.

LIFE’s undergraduate players compete in Division I-A, a division created by USA Rugby consisting of 24 of the best and biggest universities around the country including Oklahoma, Utah, Brigham Young University, UCLA, Cal State, Penn State and Notre Dame. LIFE finished the 2012 season ranked no. 2 in the country.

Men’s Sevens Sevens is an altered form of rugby which will be featured as an Olympic sport in 2016. The 2011-2012 season was the inaugural year for Life University’s undergraduate sevens team. In December, LIFE won the very first USA Rugby Collegiate National Championship competing against 23 teams from across the country. In February, LIFE won the Las Vegas Invitational, and finished in the semi-finals at the USA Rugby Collegiate Rugby Championship in Philadelphia in June. The Running Eagles finished with an impressive 20-2-1 record.

Facilities LIFE boasts sporting facilities unheard of in a university of our size. We have two gymnasiums that feature full-court floating floors and the main gym accommodates 2,200 fans. The main gym, also known as “The Eagles’ Nest,” houses the Life University basketball games and wrestling matches. The gym features state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment and is also the location for Life University’s graduations and assemblies.

Men’s Wrestling The men’s wrestling program is brand new to Life University and began its inaugural season late fall 2012

Women’s Cross Country This season Life University welcomes back the women’s cross country team to the athletic program. The team began competing in the fall of 2012, and had two ladies named to the TranSouth All-Conference Team.

Club Sports Life University’s club sport program is designed for students to compete against other universities in club-level sports. Current active clubs include running, tennis, dance, rugby, cheerleading, cycling, ultimate Frisbee, hockey and golf. Clubs are student-run with assistance from a faculty advisor. The Department of Athletics is continuously looking to start new club sports in support of student interests.

Just outside the main gym is an athletic weight room built specifically for our intercollegiate and elite-performance athletes. The gym is a 2,000 square-foot facility that features Olympic platforms, Woodway Force treadmills and over 1,000 pounds of weights. On campus, Life University has two rugby fields, two newly resurfaced tennis courts and a sand volleyball court. The fields are gaining nationwide exposure for their use in major sporting events hosted by Life University, including the Rugby Super League National Championship, collegiate rugby playoffs and high school summer camps. Our impressive track & field facilities served as a practice track during the 1996 Olympics. The venue offers stadium seating, locker rooms, concession stands and an 8,000 squarefoot field house. Athletic facilities are open to students on a daily basis. LIFE also offers three miles of trails that wind through the wooded area of campus and connect two of Marietta’s parks and Life University’s own historic 19th Century Village.

Intramurals Every quarter a variety of intramural sports are offered for students to broaden their experience at LIFE while engaging in physical activity and camaraderie. Intramural sports include softball, volleyball, dodgeball, kickball and flag football. Students create their own teams and compete throughout the quarter with the goal of winning the championship at the end of each season.
