GENERAL ELECTION

cities of london & westminster

# Resolve the housing crisis Lift the cap on Council borrowing to create 500,000 social rented homes by 2020 (mostly in London) instead of paying housing benefit. Limit rent increases, with security of tenure. Oppose short lets, limit office-to-residential conversion.

# Invest in public services The Green Party have a positive vision for Britain. It includes giving power back to Local Authorities so that they respond to local needs instead of trying to impose one-size-fits-all policies from central government.

HUGH SMALL SAYS ... “I was brought up in this constituency and have worked here for most of my life. I have been at the forefront of the campaign to make Westminster’s streets healthier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians. I am opposing Council plans to divert traffic onto residential streets from business areas, and I support the businesses who have asked the Council to discourage traffic from entering the borough instead. Westminster Council must abandon its financial strategy based on surplus parking revenue. The Green Party is punching above its weight in the London Assembly, in Parliament with Caroline Lucas MP, and with local Councillors. I have a strong background in multinational industry and as your MP I will add more value than any career politician selected by the old political machines.” hugh.small@greenparty.org.uk

Reinstate the duty to provide publicly-funded health care. Take back expiring rail franchises. End austerity which eliminates public sector investment and risks Britain’s future by trying to ‘balance the books’.

# Reduce Inner London motor traffic Build on experience with the Congestion Zone to limit traffic. Cut pollution which causes premature death of 4300 Londoners each year. Introduce 20 mph speed limit to avoid 90 casualties a year in Westminster.

# Invest in the energy revolution Incorporate new energy micro-generation equipment in public buildings. Open the electricity network to all buyers and sellers. Remove planning controls on air heat pumps. Optimise energy usage through efficiency measures.

# Publicly fund education Early education and childcare from age one, no university tuition fees, free social care for the over 65’s. Financed by wealth tax, Council Tax reform, and cancellation of the controversial Trident nuclear deterrent and high-speed train link (HS2). Email for free copies of this leaflet to distribute.
