Creatively Speaking

Writings of Love BY SUSAN ROSSER THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF WRITING A PURPOSELESS MONTHLY COLUMN IS DEVELOPING AN IDEA. ONCE I FORMULATE THAT LITTLE KERNEL, FLUSHING OUT A TOPIC can be complex. Yet, over the years, I discovered I enjoy the process. So as I lounged on my couch one Sunday (in a particularly crummy mood), I started bouncing ideas around for my January column. Everything from an

essay on tipping to another on Taylor Swift’s 10-minute version of her hit “All Too Well” crossed my mind. I even started rough drafts of both. But nothing seemed to gel. And honestly, during these absolutely bananas times, I would prefer to write an upbeat piece. Over the past two years, I have done more than my fair share of doom scrolling. And as I write this, the Omicron variant is making headlines. Of course, by the time this is published, we should know if it’s doomsday revisited, nothing to worry about or somewhere in between. So as I sunk deeper into my sofa, pondering the world, I wondered what topic I could turn into an essay that people would enjoy. And then it hit me — not like a ton of bricks — but more like a gentle breeze.

In 2022, I hereby commit to writing columns of love. Now, I write a column every month, so I am talking about all kinds of love here — from friendship to family to food and fauna — who knows where this path will take me (and you, my dear reader). All I can say is I want to be positive, and writing a column about the custom of tipping or a 10-minute break-up song caused me to fantasize about tossing my laptop through the sliding glass door. So there you have it. This isn’t really a column; it’s more an introduction to a year’s worth of columns about love. I’ll start the year with why I mostly love writing this column. To put it plainly, I never thought of myself as a writer. Truthfully, I am a graphic designer, and when we bought the magazine, I never envisioned myself writing much of anything. But several people suggested I write the editor’s column. I titled it Creatively Speaking because I didn’t want to get boxed into a typical column about monthly magazine content. I thought it would be better for the our readers to have a space where I simply get a little creative and weird or oddly personal.

Over the years, I have received mostly positive feedback. I pushed myself to do something I honestly thought I couldn’t do. And while it hasn’t always been one-thousand percent enjoyable, it has been a rewarding journey. I hope my “love columns” will help me find joy and love in unexpected places. I expect to see everything with a renewed purpose. If I am looking for love, who knows what I will find. Y

The Clear Way to Straighten Teeth – Invisalign DR. GABRIELA ESPINOZA Everyone dreams of having a straight, beautiful smile. Unfortunately, many people suffer from having malaligned or crooked teeth. The embarrassment of having to hide your smile not only impacts your self-esteem and dental health but can also change how others interact with you. Thankfully, there is a more subtle way to straighten your teeth: Invisalign. Here are the advantages of Invisalign: Practically Invisible - The appearance of metal braces is typically what stops people from seeking help with their crooked teeth.

Professionals and those who are in careers that require a particular dress-code may feel as though their braces will not quite put out the vibe they want. And while looking younger isn’t always a bad thing, the benefits of the Invisalign system is that it is practically invisible. Removable - Traditional metal braces are bonded directly to your teeth and for some it is fortunate they cannot be removed. However, others consider this a disadvantage in that they cannot be removed to eat, sleep, or brush teeth. If

you wish to eat something that would be difficult with braces, simply remove the aligners yourself and put them back on when you are done eating. Must include full bio.

Dr. Gabriela Espinoza is a cosmetic and orthodontic dentist at Park Plaza Dental. She has over 10 years of clinical experience caring for her patients. She received her dental degree (DMD) from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and completed a fellowship in Orthodontics at New York University. Dr. Espinoza focuses her practice on restorative dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, Invisalign and Orthodontics. Her ultimate goal is to provide the best quality of care for all of her patients and to add to their overall sense of well-being.

Mixed-Use Development Gets Approved for Old Club Cinema Site The Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board, at its Dec. 15 meeting, approved the site plan for Sentosa, a mixed-use project planned for a 6.2-acre site along North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, just south of Shoppers Haven and the RaceTrac gas station on NE 33rd Street. Falcone Group, headquartered in Boca Raton, is the developer behind the project, which consists of 285 rental apartments and 4,164 square feet of commercial space. The site, located at 3151-3251 N. Federal Highway, was previously occupied by a night club called Club Cinema, and a strip shopping center. Last year, the current property owner, 1307 South Wabash, LLC, demolished all the structures on the site, including the former Club Cinema building, which originally housed a movie theater. According to the approved site plan, Sentosa will consist of two 7-story buildings adjacent to Federal Highway, each with 60 residential units. Each of the buildings will also have two 928-square-foot groundfloor commercial spaces fronting the highway. To make the buildings “less obtrusive,” they will face northsouth, so that only the ends of the buildings will be parallel to Federal Highway, and not the entire length of the buildings. A third building with 165 residential units will be adjacent to the Cresthaven neighborhood,

which lies to the west of the project site. This U-shaped building will have seven stories, but the “ends” of the “U,” which will be closest to the neighborhood, will be four stories high. Amenities for the development will be located in this building, including a club room, full-service gym, yoga room, co-work space and an outdoor patio with a pool. The plans also include a pet spa and dog park. In a previous version of the plans, the façade of the U-shaped building was a solid seven stories. It was redesigned to include an approximately 30-foot separation in the middle of the façade, from the third floor up, to allow for increased airflow between the buildings. There will be two gated access points to enter and exit the development – one on Federal Highway and one on NE 33rd Street. The project includes several

surface parking areas with a total of 169 spaces. A 4-story parking garage with 280 spaces is proposed at the southwest corner of the property. In addition, seven spaces inside a detached garage at the southeast corner of the site, fronting Federal Highway, will be offered to residential tenants as an add-on rental item. The residential units range from studios averaging 575 square feet to three-bedroom units averaging 1,263 square feet. The plan is for all of the residential units to be rented at market rate, according to the developer. The project site is currently zoned as a business district, but the City’s zoning code allows multi-family development on the property with the allocation of “flexibility (flex) units.” The City Commission approved 285 flex units for the Sentosa project last month. Local Girl Scouts Build a Bat Box for DeGroff Park DeGroff Park, the serene 3-acre spot along the Intracoastal Waterway, now features a bat box, thanks to three members of Girl Scout Troop 10305 in Lighthouse Point – Luisa Tetzner, Lalehan Sirvan and Angela Mountoulias. They built the bat box to earn their Bronze Award, the highest award Junior Girl Scouts (grades 4-5) can achieve. To earn the award, the girls had to identify a need in the community, do the necessary research, come up with a solution and work with the community to bring the plans to life. The girls were interested in doing a conservation project and helping the environment. They decided on a bat box because bats are losing their habitats or are roosting in unsafe places, and the bat box would provide a safe home for them. In addition, the bats will benefit the community because they eat large quantities of insects, including moths, flies and mosquitoes. They also play a key role in nocturnal pollination. Luisa’s mother contacted Lighthouse Point Parks and Recreation Director Becky Word to ask if the bat box could be installed in a park space somewhere in the city. Word said DeGroff Park was the most conducive setting because it is a passive park and closes after sunset, which is when bats go out to look for food. The park was also suitable because the bat box needed to be in an area that is clear of trees or any large structures. The most likely species to move into the bat box is the Brazilian free-tailed bat, the most common bat in South Florida. They are the fastest bat species, reaching flight speeds up to 100 mph. As adults, they weigh about a half-ounce. The box, made of plywood, measures approximately 2 feet by 3 feet, and can hold about 200 bats. It sits atop a metal pole that rises up about 10 feet. The bottom of the box is open for the bats to land on and climb in. The bat box should receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day because bats need a warm place to raise their young that lets them decrease their metabolic needs while roosting. The box faces south to make sure it receives ample sunlight during the day. To reach the desired amount of sunlight, the bat box is placed in open land to prevent any type of shade. The girls installed the bat box at DeGroff Park with the help of their parents. The metal pole had to be set in a concrete base. They decorated the area at the base of the pole with kindness rocks they had painted with nature and bat-related themes. A set of information sheets is attached to the pole for visitors to read. It took about a month for the girls to complete the project, meeting for a few hours every week. The girls will be keeping their eyes on the bat box. When researching the project, the girls learned that it could take up to a year for bats to make the bat box a home. Y

Riverside Promenade’s Yellow Yolk Is Expected to Open this Summer Riverside Promenade, a restaurant and retail project currently under construction at the southeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge, expects to see the opening of its first component – a breakfast spot called Yellow Yolk – in the next 6 to 8 months, according to the project architect, Julio Montaner. The Riverside Promenade development consists of two side-by-side restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway, and a building located on Atlantic Boulevard between South Riverside Drive and Hibiscus Avenue that will contain Yellow Yolk and a small real estate office. The two waterfront restaurants will have their entrances on Riverside Drive. The larger of the two restaurants, located at 103 S. Riverside Drive will feature “casual Italian” fare, said Montaner. The smaller restaurant, which is adjacent to Atlantic Boulevard, will feature high-end international cuisine. Both restaurants will have indoor and outdoor seating. The project is being developed by Tsatas Acquisitions, the company that owns the property. It will

include roughly 100 surface parking spaces across the street from the two restaurants. Tsatas Acquisitions will operate Yellow Yolk and the other two eateries. The company owns Madisons New York Grill & Bar, which it opened in Boca Raton in 2013. The Riverside Promenade project had its groundbreaking in November 2017, and subsequently encountered delays. Last year, several design modifications were made to the two restaurant buildings, which needed to go

ABOVE Rendering of Riverside Promenade in Pompano Bach

through the City’s approval process. The overall design concept has not been changed. The changes were solely related to revised interior design elements and screening mechanical equipment on the roof. Montaner said he expects the shells of all three buildings will be completed in March 2022, as well as the parking, landscaping and irrigation. The next phase will be the interior buildout of the Yellow Yolk building, followed by the Italian restaurant, and then the smaller restaurant. Y

City Commissioner Earl Maucker Will Not Seek Reelection Lighthouse Point City Commissioner Earl Maucker has announced he will not seek a fourth term in the upcoming March municipal election. He was first elected in 2012 shortly after his retirement as the editor of the Sun-Sentinel. “I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the community for the past 10 years, but its always healthy for new ideas and fresh perspectives,” said Maucker. “There are richly talented residents who are eager to serve and should be given the opportunity to do so.”

Maucker said he was proud to have been involved in the numerous major projects currently underway in the city including the new fire station, community center at Dan Witt Park and a new public works facility. “Our city has a clear path to the future with an emphasis on public safety and fiscal accountability,” said Maucker. “It’s a good time for the next generation to set the course for what’s ahead making Lighthouse Point the special place it is to live and raise a family.

A1A Twin Towers Project Is Moving Forward After Resolution of Litigation Against It Ocean Park Beach Residences, a 205-foot-high “twin towers” project planned for a vacant 0.62-acre parcel at 1508 N. Ocean Blvd. in Pompano Beach, is currently going through the City’s review process for site plan approval, just over a year after litigation brought against the project was resolved. The site of the proposed project is on the southeast corner of the NE 16th Street and A1A intersection, adjacent to North Ocean Park, a beachfront public city park that is designated as one of the resources along the Broward County A1A Scenic Highway. In July 2019, the City Commission approved a request by the developer, Mount Vernon Property Holdings, LLC, to rezone the vacant parcel in order to accommodate the project, which many residents in the surrounding neighborhood strongly opposed. The maximum height allowable before the zoning change was 105 feet. Members of the public who spoke out against the project and the rezoning of the property during city commission meetings said they were concerned about the height of the building, insufficient parking, potential traffic issues, incompatibility with the proposed site, and putting too much on such a small parcel. Some neighboring residents held a protest at the project site. In August 2019, two residents who live in proximity of the project site filed an appeal in Broward County Circuit Court against the City Commission’s decision to approve the rezoning of the property and a development agreement related to improvements the developer is proposing for North Ocean Park, but the appeal was denied in October 2020.

According to the site plan, the developer plans to construct a 19-story mixed-use building that includes two towers of luxury condominiums on top of a 3-story base. The base includes approximately 3,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space (intended primarily for residents) and three parking levels with access fronting NE 16th Street. The fourth floor consists of a landscaped deck with a pool and other amenities. The residential component begins on level five. The two residential towers consist of 28 dwelling units, with each floor of each tower containing a single unit, except for the top floor, which contains a two-story penthouse. The proposed 19-story structure is approximately 50 feet taller than its closest multi-family neighbor, Tiffany Gardens to the north, which stands at 145 feet, but was built before the 105-foot height restriction was established. When the ordinance to rezone the project site came before the City Commission for final approval, Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin, who voted against it, said: “It’s a beautiful project but not in that spot. It’s just not compatible with

ABOVE Rendering of Ocean Park Beach Residences

that park being right behind it. I think it’s just too large.” The developer proposes adding a new pavilion, restrooms, exterior showers, seating, landscaping, picnic tables, barbecue grills and fitness equipment to North Ocean Park, which will remain a public city park. All changes to the park must have City approval and must comply with all guidelines consistent with the park’s AIA Scenic Highway designation. The Ocean Park Beach Residences project also proposes to increase public parking spaces for North Ocean Park. Plans include reconfiguring NE 16th Street with parallel and 90-degree parking, curbing, gutters, walkways and enhanced landscaping. The current project is a revised version of plans the developer submitted to the City in 2017 as part of a rezoning request for the site, which was not approved. At that time, the project consisted of two 248-foot-high towers with 35 residential units. The mixed-use component was 768 square feet of unmanned kiosks and a 400-squarefoot Broward Sheriff’s Office substation on the ground floor. Y

Hidden Harbour Project Undergoes More Changes DEVELOPER SEEKS TO BUILD PARKING GARAGE ON NE 16TH STREET The developers of Harborside at Hidden Harbour, a large-scale, mixed-use project approved in 2020 for a site at the corner of North Federal Highway and NE 16th Street in Pompano Beach, have revised the plans and are seeking approval from the City to build a 3-story parking garage on the corner of NE 16th Street and NE 24th Avenue. The Harborside at Hidden Harbour project consists of two mixed-use buildings – one fronting Federal Highway; the other on the south side of NE 16th Street – with 271 residential units and approximately 13,500 square feet of restaurant and retail uses. The building along Federal Highway includes an 8-story parking garage. The developers – AMP IV-Hidden Harbour, LLC and HTG AMP Harbourside, LLC – want to use the lot at 2351 NE 16th Street, along with a small, grassy lot to its west, both of which they own, as the site for the 3-story parking garage. The lot at 2351 NE 16th Street, currently occupied by a singlefamily home, was purchased by HTG AMP Harbourside in May 2021. The developers have submitted an application to the City to rezone the property from RD-1 (Two Family Residence) to PD-I (Planned Development Infill) and to add it to the previously approved Hidden Harbour PD-I zoning district. The proposed parking garage would serve the mixed-use building on NE 16th Street, directly opposite it. In the previous plans, a portion of the grassy lot on NE 16th Street was to be used for valet parking for residents of the building on NE 16th Street. A valet drop-off area with five stacking spaces was to be in front of the building, off the public right-of-way,

and the vehicles were to be parked in the garage of the building fronting Federal Highway. The grassy lot was to have nine spaces dedicated for use as an additional staging area in the event of a back-up. Initially, the grassy lot was intended to be set aside for use as a public park and residents in the building on NE 16th Street would have been required to park in the garage in the building along Federal Highway, and then walk to their units. A document submitted by the developers’ land use attorney as part of the rezoning application states that, according to a traffic study, the parking garage on NE 16th Street will reduce the need for up to 1,000 local trips per day impacting the intersection of NE 16th Street and NE 23rd Avenue (the roadway that runs north-tosouth through the project site). The redesign will also remove delivery and garbage truck traffic completely from NE 16th Street so that it is accessed from NE 23rd Avenue. The introduction of the NE 16th Street parking garage will also allow a reduced area in the Federal Highway building that is devoted to parking, according to the land use attorney. Under the revised plan, additional portions of the Federal Highway and NE 23rd Avenue frontages will be lined with commercial and residential uses. The developers recently got approval to reduce the proposed height of the development, as well as the number of residential units,

ABOVE Proposed site plan for 3-story parking garage at Hidden Harbour

through an amended site plan. The proposed building along Federal Highway was reduced from nine stories to eight stories. The maximum height of the proposed mixed-use building along NE 16th Street was reduced from nine stories to eight stories, retaining the height transition down to three stories (35 feet) at the east end, which is adjacent to an existing two-story condo building. In addition to the reduced building heights, the number of residential units was reduced from 300 to 271 units. The proposed amendment to the Planned Development (PD), in addition to rezoning the property at 2351 NE 16th Street, would formalize the project’s height reduction, “ensuring that no future site plan revisions could seek more than eight stories without returning to the City Commission for another PD amendment.” All of the remaining elements in the 2020 design are retained in the new design, including publicly accessible promenades along the waterway on NE 23rd Avenue and NE 16th Street. The existing 68,800-square-foot marina dry boat storage building on the east side of NE 23rd Avenue will remain unmodified. Y

Personal Development

Simplify Your Way to Success BY CRAIG HALEY

AS PEOPLE GET OLDER AND GAIN WORLDLY EXPERIENCE, WE ALL DISCOVER NEW WAYS TO ACCOMPLISH TASKS, ORGANIZE OUR LIVES, AND ACHIEVE GOALS WITH GREATER EASE. I love to study successful people. I am fascinated with how they achieved what they did. I wonder what kind of person they had to become to achieve such a level of success. What actions did they take? How did they overcome the challenges that were blocking them? On the other hand, how do so many people struggle to get their lives on track? How are some people sliding along laterally in life and don’t make the progress they want towards their goals and dreams? I read an interesting article about how the lion tamer can tame an aggressive lion. There is no question that a lion could easily knock the stool out of the hands’ of the lion tamer and kill him with great ease. However, the lion does not do that, and the reason the lion is caught dead in his tracks is the lion sees the four legs of the stool as four separate threats. The lion gets overwhelmed by the

thought of dealing with four potential dangers — so it does nothing. That is precisely what many people do when they have too many things on their to-do list. They do nothing! They get overwhelmed and distracted, so they do nothing instead of attacking the most important project first. All of the sudden bingeing a show on Netflix or watching reruns of old sitcoms (“Two and a Half Men” would be my go-to) seems a lot easier and more fun. Joe Girard is known as the “Greatest Salesman in the World.” He

holds the record in the “Guinness Book of World Records” for the largest number of cars sold in the world. When he was an active car salesman, he sold 1,301 cars in a 12-year period. When they asked him what the secret was to his success, his answer was profoundly simple. He said that he only had two priorities in his work. Those two priorities were: Anything that retained a customer so they would continue to buy from him. Anything that would attract a new customer. He said that if the task at hand did not fall under either of those two categories, he delegated it to someone else, deferred it to a later date, or deleted it altogether because it did not move the needle towards his main goals/priorities. This mindset is so profound. Instead of getting overwhelmed and distracted by a million things that could knock him off track, he stays laser-focused on the activities that retain his customers or obtain new ones. Nothing else matters when it comes to his business. What are your Most Valuable Priorities (MVP’s)? We run Elite Force Martial Arts much differently today than we did back in 2003 when we opened up. Now our business model is incredibly simple, and that allows us to focus on our two priorities, which are retaining our current members and making sure they are happy. The second priority is recruiting the right members to join our martial arts family. Imagine sitting down to work knowing that you have one to three priorities for the day instead of what most people have, which is a laundry list of tasks and action items that keep them busy all day long without accomplishing much towards their big goals. When you can eliminate the noise and distractions in your life and zero in on your top priorities, top goals, and vital functions, you are creating a world of simplicity and clarity that is incredibly powerful and motivating. Legal Matters

In These Challenging Times, Legal Documents are More Important than Ever BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

SAFETY AND HEALTH ARE FOREMOST IN OUR MINDS THESE DAYS. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE NEEDS TO BE HOSPITALIZED? AND WHAT IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU love dies? Now is the time to be prepared. Having the right legal documents for Florida is crucial.

If you need to be hospitalized, it is imperative that you have a current designation of health care surrogate and living will. Just being married does not automatically give you the right to make medical decisions for your spouse. Likewise, a child can not automatically make medical decisions for a parent. Your surrogate will be able to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to communicate. Even if the hospital does not allow any visitors due to the pandemic, your surrogate will be able to talk to the doctors and

50 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

make decisions on the phone or by e-mail. All your surrogate needs to do is e-mail or fax a copy of your document to the hospital. If there is no hope to save you, that surrogate would be authorized to “pull the plug” based on the living will. The Durable Power of Attorney is also important to allow someone to take over your legal and financial affairs. Your will or revocable living trust will determine who inherits your assets if you should die. The trust is important to consider if you own your home or other real estate, because it avoids probate. Probate can tie up your property for many months and prevent your heirs from selling without a court order. They would have to continue to pay taxes, maintenance, mortgage, utilities etc. in addition to thousands of dollars in attorney fees and court costs. A life estate deed is another option to consider to avoid probate. Your attorney can discuss the different options and the benefits of each one. If you have older Florida documents, it is crucial to speak with an estate planning attorney to ensure they are still valid. Florida law has changed regarding requirements for the health care surrogate, living will and durable power of attorney. If you have out-of-state documents, you should consider doing new Florida ones to conform to state law. Y Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. Is Your High School Senior Ready for College? BY. DR. JILL SELBACH

WE ALL KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF PREPARING FOR COLLEGE. YOU TOOK STEPS TO GUIDE YOUR CHILD THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. YOU ENSURED THAT THEY MET WITH A guidance counselor to have an academic schedule that would provide them with the best college opportunities. You encouraged extracurricular and volunteer activities to be the well-rounded student colleges desire. You aided your child in researching colleges and preparing for college entrance tests. You may be breathing a sigh of relief now that college acceptances have come through. However, there are many things we need to prepare our kids for aside from getting into college. First-year college students need life skills. They need to manage the academic demands and life demands of eating healthy foods, budgeting money, managing time and relationships. BUDGETS Talk to your child about budgeting money and have them create a budget before leaving for school. Your child needs to know there is not an endless supply of money, and they need to develop financial discipline. Give them methods to track and prioritize spending. Allow them to pay their bills. Many parents pay students’ bills electronically for them. This is not teaching them the life skills they need to be developing at this stage. The skills they learn now develop into financial patterns in life. ROOMMATES Coping with roommates is another issue you should discuss with your new college student. Advise them to set ground rules with their roommate to follow that are comfortable for all. Address sharing items, coming in late, guests and how to

52 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

bring up issues with each other before they become intolerable. TIME MANAGEMENT Managing time and stress are other topics to discuss with your child. Choices need to be made about structuring time. Keeping a consistent time for waking, exercising, working, studying between classes, balancing social and sleeping time is essential to help your child develop. For many college students creating this structure for themselves is very difficult. It

is the first time in their lives that they have to do this themselves, and they may have much more time on their hands. Mundane chores that they may not be accustomed to doing, like laundry or cooking simple meals for themselves take time and need to be done. It is helpful to get them in a routine of doing these things prior to leaving home.

STRESS AND ANXIETY The emotional stress of being away from home and managing day-to-day self-care, and going to classes can be overwhelming. In September of 2020, a non-profit organization, Active Minds, published a survey where 75% of those surveyed reported worsening mental health issues since the pandemic began. This is no surprise to those who follow the news or who are around young people. A bill was introduced to Congress to form a commission to study mental health among college students in reaction to the increase in suicides across the country. Parents should address symptoms of anxiety or depression before their child leaves for college. This is the stage in life where many mental health issues emerge. Looking for warning signs of depression is something with which parents should be familiar. ALCOHOL We want to arm our kids with the tools to be successful. Don’t avoid speaking about things that present serious issues for college students. The excessive use of alcohol and binge drinking is a significant problem on college campuses. According to a national survey, almost 60 percent of college students ages 18–22 drank alcohol in the past month, and almost two out of three of them engaged in binge drinking during that same time frame. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, approximately 1,825 college students between 18 and 24 die from alcoholrelated unintentional injuries, including motor-vehicle crashes. Close to 696,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking, and about 97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 report experiencing alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape. SEX Every college student should be knowledgeable about safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases. It is also important for your college student to know where to obtain help or guidance at school. They should know where the student counseling services are located and how to access services and where to go for academic help. The transition to college can be stressful and challenging for the most successful student. Frequently we focus on the academic pieces and fail to prepare our children in these other important life areas. If you feel you need more specific tools for your college student, an individualized plan can be devised tailored to your child’s needs. Y

Feeling Philanthropic?

A CHARITABLE PLANNING PRIMER

BY GREGORY EDWARDS

SMART GIVING IS USUALLY BEST ACCOMPLISHED AS PART OF YOUR OVERALL FINANCIAL SITUATION. BY CONSIDERING THE VARIOUS ASSETS YOU HAVE AND HOW THEY ARE structured, you can plot a path to results that are very worthwhile to all parties involved — including you, your family, your business (if you own one) and the charitable organization. To get those results, charitable planning is often coordinated with estate or income tax planning that uses advanced legal and tax strategies and financial products.

Seven Ways to Give Philanthropy can take several forms. Generally speaking, charitable gifts provide you with a financial benefit on top of tax deductions — benefits put into the tax code specifically to

encourage charitable giving. The best first step in your planning efforts is to understand the charitable giving landscape, as there are many ways to accomplish charitable giving. For example: • WILL BEQUEST This is the simplest gift — and the one that is by far the most common among those who have already made a planned gift. Through a will bequest, you leave a charitable gift in your will, and the gift does not go to the charity until the will is probated. What’s more, will bequests are convenient because the assets are still available to you during your lifetime. Your estate is also able to take an estate tax deduction for the value of the charitable bequest. • PRIVATE FOUNDATION This is a private, nonprofit organization that receives most of its contributions from a single wealthy individual or family (usually very wealthy). With a private foundation, a minimum amount of the foundation’s assets must be distributed annually (currently about 5%). • DONOR-ADVISED FUND (DAF) Think of DAFs as charities that invest in pooled investment vehicles similar to mutual funds. What you donate earns a federal income tax deduction for the entire gift, because the DAF is technically a nonprofit. You can, at your own pace, pinpoint certain charities and decide how much to give to each one. You can then request that the fund send a check to your chosen organization. • CHARITABLE TRUST There are two types of charitable trusts: With a charitable remainder trust, the benefit to charity is delayed because income from the trust is reserved for you (as the donor) or some other person you specify. As part of the gift, the trust provides income for you for

In a charitable lead trust, you transfer assets to the trust for life (or a specific number of years), and the trust’s income is paid to your charity of choice. When the trust expires, the assets in the trust are either returned to you (or your estate) or passed on to the heirs you designate. • CHARITABLE GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE This approach uses a traditional financial tool — life insurance — in an innovative way. As the donor, you designate a charity as the owner of your life insurance policy. Generally, you can take a tax deduction for the premiums and create a significant charitable gift. •CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY This is a contract between you and a qualified charity that exchanges your gift to charity for an annuity (or guaranteed lifelong income) to you. There is a modest income tax deduction for the actuarially determined value of the gift you pass on to charity. • POOLED INCOME FUND Donors contribute securities, cash or other acceptable assets to the pooled

Tidbits & Trivia

If I Were God… BY JAMES TERLIZZI

THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS MAKE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME PERMANENT. THIS CHANGE WOULD SAVE THOUSANDS OF CLOCKS FROM BEING DESTROYED BY PEOPLE TURNING THE hands in the wrong direction to go back one hour. To solve the traffic problem in Florida, I would make all the roads one-way northbound. In one day, it would become Georgia’s problem. I would limit all politicians to one year in office. As Mark Twain said: “Politicians are like diapers. They should be changed often and for the same reason.” To get kids to eat their vegetables, I would make broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts taste like chocolate. To help folks lose weight, I would make chocolate taste like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Every time there is a power outage, I would force Florida Power & Light executives to turn off the electricity in their homes until everyone else’s is restored. Instead of seats, all commercial airplanes would be required to have chaise lounges and tanning beds. Wolfgang Puck would prepare all in-flight mals. To combat global warming, candles will be banned in all houses of worship. (I know this won’t help much, but I am allergic to candle smoke.) It would be a venial sin to use a leaf blower. I would turn all iguanas into chickens. Each would be wearing a tag with a different recipe. This would bring back the barter system, as people would catch the chickens and trade them for jars of ragu. I would cure everyone of hemorrhoids. (Sell Preparation H stock “short”. You’ll make a lot of money.) Supermarket cashiers would be banned from asking if you would like to donate to the Canberra Home for Wayward Kangaroos and other obscure charities. CVS would be limited to sales receipts no more than three feet long. I would disable telephone routing systems. All phones would

have to be manned by living humans. No one would have to see a doctor to obtain a referral to see another doctor. Anyone who allows their dog to defecate on your lawn would be forced to eat liver for every meal for life. I would resurrect Sean Connery. I miss him as James Bond.

A person who passed wind in an elevator would be forced to spend a week locked in a storm cellar with an insurance salesman. I would either ban smartphones or teach myself how to use one. Then I would learn what an “app” is. All dogs and cats would be born with pouches. This would end their excuse that they never carry money because they have no pockets. Key lime pie would be served with every meal. To avoid hurting anyone’s feelings, I would force more sports teams to change their names. For example, the New York Giants would become the New York Small Medium and Large People, while the Los Angeles Chargers’ new name would be Los Angeles Chargers and Cash Payers. On second thought, it will be a mortal sin to use a leaf blower. Y

Fish Tales

Swords and Stripes BY JOHN PIOTROWSKI AS WE TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO WINTER AND THE WINDS SWIRL WITH THE COOL FRONTS AS THEY PASS, THE PELAGICS START THEIR WINTER migrations. And to be clear, we are referring to fish, not bikini models and apparel. In the spring, we get excited for calm winds and crossings for yellowfin tuna, but when the Thanksgiving turkey is all gone, we think about Bahamian conch chowder to go with our wahoo ceviche. It is more difficult to time the weather as the window for Gulfstream crossings can be narrow, but those who make it are often rewarded with the scream of a 50 W that only a wahoo provides. Wahoo feed along reef lines and edges where currents congregate bait. A common method to catch these speedy creatures is to troll as fast as your boat will allow. A strong Bimini twist securing a swivel clip to a high speed trolling weight, 60-foot shock cord made of 250-pound mono or floro tied to a purple and black or blue and white large islander with a double hook rig an extra mylar skirt will likely do the trick. Try dragging several with different size weights from Bimini south to Orange or North to the Ginger Breads. Find where the edge drops off and make a long snake along the edge from 100-feet to 450-feet. For some reason, the wahoo like Michael Jackson tunes in the early morning and light rock in the evenings while traveling around 14 knots — or so I’m told. When you get one on the line, try not to slow down too much and start cranking when the run slows. Remember, these fish are usually schooling, so make a few passes and remember your depth. Members of the Lighthouse Point Sportsman’s Association (LHPSSA) have been fortunate to have some of the best and most decorated wahoo fishermen in the world frequent their meetings to share their secrets. LHPSSA member John Savona and his crew on the Overboard have been successful several times this season. Although you may not get as many trips with multiple fish, you can catch these speedy delicious zebras right off our beaches. Try fishing around the moons and in the early morning and late afternoons. If you don’t want to burn that much fuel, slow down and use planners with smaller mylar and strip baits. You may get lucky a few miles from the inlet. Most of our local tackle stores will have all the rigs and bait you need. Try Big Dog Tackle, Chaos, Custom Rod & Reel and RJ Boyle’s place to start. The wealth of fishing knowledge in these establishments is unmatched anywhere in the world. If you can’t make it across the Gulfstream, you shouldn’t fret because the tasty swordfish are usually chewing from late summer through the early winter. Daytime swording has become

the dominant strategy for these billfish. This is probably the most challenging fishing that requires the greatest skill of all the sport fishing in South Florida. Daytime swording usually requires a trip of 16 – 25 miles offshore, relatively calm seas and moderate current. Then you have to find which seamount highway the fish are feeding on and find a way to get a bait upwards of 2,000-feet down to the fish. Doing all that with an electric reel in a few knots of current is no easy task. Fortunately, we have fantistic local swordfisherman . RJ-Boyle and his crew are a great place to start — whether you need tactics, baits, rigs or if you want to charter them directly. For most people, acquiring serious tackle can be a challenge and a wallet buster. Fortunately, a resident of Lighthouse Point came up with a fantastic idea to help us. This new company is called Reel Play Fishing Rentals. Give them a call, and they can set you up with electric reels so you can try your luck without a huge commitment of time and money. If you have dreamed of making a trip to catch fall wahoo on the edge of the Bahamas or to pull a pumpkin sword from the deep but felt the task too daunting — don’t worry. There are several fishing clubs you can join that will give you access to all the, boats, secrets and comradery you will need. The Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman’s Association in LHP or the Offshore Anglers of Pompano Beach in Pompano are great organizations to check out. Y John Piotrowski is president of the Lighthouse Point Sportman’s Association. To learn more about the club visit lhpssa.org. Mushroom Reuben Stromboli BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER I’m told January is a big month for football. And while I am not a huge fan of the sport, I am a tremendous fan of game-day snacks. I love anything I can consume on my couch while snuggled beneath a cozy blanket. For me, Netflix, HBO and Hulu are my viewing choices. But whether it’s football or a corny movie, a slice of mushroom reuben stromboli wins the day. Naturally, you can replace the sautéed mushrooms in this recipe for corned beef or pastrami. Still, the mushroom version is a great vegetarian option for your footballloving friends and family. >>>

INGREDIENTS

1 pound pizza dough (sold in the bakery section at Publix) 1 pound mushrooms, sliced (such as portobello or cremini) 2-3 tablespoons olive oil (more as needed) 8 ounces sauerkraut 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese (or you can upgrade to grated gruyere) 1/2 teaspoon coriander 1 egg Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Caraway seeds (optional) Flaky Sea Salt Thousand island or mustard for serving

PREPARATION

Line a sheet-pan with parchment paper and set it aside. Place the sour kraut in a colander and drain liquid and set it aside. In a large saute pan over medium-high heat, add 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil. Add about onethird of the mushrooms. Cook until both sides of the mushrooms are golden. You don’t want to crowd the pan, or the mushrooms will steam. Towards the end of cooking, sprinkle the mushrooms with a pinch of coriander, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Be generous with the salt and pepper. Remove from pan and set aside. Continue with the rest of the mushrooms. Stretch the dough out to a rectangle about 11 x 17 inches. Place the dough on the lined sheet-pan. Top the dough with the mushrooms leaving a 1-inch border all around. Layer the Swiss cheese on next — covering all the mushrooms. Then sprinkle the sour kraut all over the cheese. Brush all of the edges with egg wash. Position the dough so the 17-inch side is closest to you. Starting with the side closest to you, roll up the dough like a jelly roll into a 17-inch log. The seam side should be down. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with caraway seeds if using and flaky sea salt. Cut 4 1-inch slits along the top. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let it rise just a little bit… for about 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and place the rack in the center of the oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cut into 1-inch slices and serve. Y

Try the Wine

Heads Up for Affordable and Tasty Portuguese Reds BY DAVID EHRENFRIED WITH THE WINTER MONTHS AND COOLER WEATHER, RED WINES ARE IN. NOT THAT WHITE WINES ARE OUT. EVEN IN FLORIDA, IT’S GOOD TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE CHILLED and generally lighter wines we often prefer in warm weather. For many wine drinkers, that means turning to popular West Coast reds like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, or perhaps to other favorite red wines from France, Italy, or other countries. There are so many delicious and affordable choices, although it’s understandable that most wine drinkers lean toward wines they know and like best, only occasionally purchasing less familiar wines. Otherwise, we wouldn’t see so many shelves in wine stores and supermarkets lined fully with pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon,

chianti, Bordeaux, shiraz, and malbec. We might see more red wines from places like Portugal, the subject of this column, and Greece, Southern Italy, Chile, South Africa, and French regions like Languedoc-Roussillon. Stores understandably allot more space to wines that sell best, and many carry few if any wines that seem to have little demand or are less familiar to their customers. There are, of course, many reasons for this. Among other things, it takes some education, promotion, and knowledgeable salespeople to

64 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

nudge consumers to venture off beaten wine aisle paths. In prior columns, I’ve written about many different wines to encourage readers to try less familiar. I do that because it’s fun and interesting but also because many wines reflect the people, culture and cuisines where they were made. I figure if people buy these wines or ask their wine merchants about them, we might see more of them in stores and appreciate the vast choices of quality wine available. In the meantime, if certain wines aren’t available to you locally, you can often buy them from online sources and have them shipped to you often at no extra charge.

Affordable Douro Valley Reds Among the red wines I like to encourage people to add to their repertoire are dry reds from Portugal. As wine goes, Portugal is most famous for Port, the sweet, fortified wine made with blends predominately of grapes native to Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. These grapes are grown on the steep river embankments and hillsides of the Douro River Valley. Most of the same grape varieties used to make Port are also used to make the Douro Valley’s fabulous dry red table wines. I’m fond of these reds for their robustness and energy, their wonderful dark fruit flavors and aromas, and their noticeable tannins and lively acidity that make them perfect matches for cheese and hearty, flavorful dishes. Portugal has more than 250 indigenous grape varieties, perhaps more than any other country. Three of the most important red wine varietals are touriga nacional, tinto roriz (Tempranillo in Spain), and touriga franca. These are the principal ingredients for the Douro Valley’s dry red wines and Port, although other varietals, such as tinto cão and tinta barroca, are often used in smaller quantities. Consequently, the flavor profile for Douro’s dry reds can vary considerably depending on the blend. Touriga nacional grapes produce robust, full-bodied and aromatic wines with bold dark fruit flavors and ample tannins. Because this varietal can make very tannic and overbearing

wines, other grapes are used to soften the wines and add additional aromas and flavors. My experience is that each Douro blend often has its own personality, tasting handcrafted rather than manufactured. Among the taste components I like best are robust blackberry and dark fruit flavors, floral and smoky scents, boldness without being overbearing, firm structure, and lip-smacking texture. There are other things to like about Portuguese wines. Generally, they remain among the world’s best wine values, thanks partly to Portugal’s relatively low cost of living, highly skilled growers and winemakers, and its burgeoning wine industry. Good to excellent wines from Portugal’s many wine regions remain reasonably priced compared to comparable wines from other parts of Europe and the U.S. Most, including some top wines, are priced well under $50 a bottle at retail, with many good wines selling for under $15, and even under $10 when discounted. As for quality, the four most recently rated vintages (20152018) for dry red Douro wines have gotten outstanding marks from growers and wine experts, making these wines particularly attractive for savvy consumers. (And 2019 is expected to be a good vintage, as well.) Due to a combination of ample and timely rains and hot summers, the best reds produced during these years have been lauded as powerful and concentrated by critics and winemakers alike. There are truly superb wines available if you’re prepared to pay more than $40 or $50 a bottle. But there’s quality at all price levels. At least that’s been my recent experience in tasting a handful of modestly priced Douro reds, specifically bottles selling in the $10-30 range. (See my tasting notes below.)

Drinking Douro Reds The best Douro reds are elegant, energetic, well-balanced medium to full-bodied, full of pleasing dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, and other flavors. Some Douro reds can be rough or rustic, though, particularly when young (only a few years older than the vintage) because of their ample mouth-coating tannins. I suggest letting these wines breathe for at least 30 minutes after opening or decanting them to expose them to air more quickly. They’ll continue to open up and change in taste somewhat with food. Serving with cheese or other rich or fatty foods that bind with wine tannins can make the wines taste softer — and, ironically, make these foods taste less rich. Douro red wines generally go well with hearty and flavorful dishes. For example, we drank most of the wines we tasted for this column with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Whether meat, poultry, or even fish — off the grill, from the oven, in sauces, or stews, or over rice, potatoes, or other starches — these wines can pair deliciously. It may seem odd to serve a bold red wine with fish, but I’ve been served red Douro wine in Portugal with grilled whole fresh fish over cabbage and onions swimming in fresh hot olive oil and loved everything about the pairing. Another fantastic combination is Douro red with appetizers such as flavorful cheeses, sausage, salami, and smoked foods. However, I would avoid pairing with spicy hot Asian, Indian, or Mexican dishes.

Buying Portuguese Wines Portuguese wines are often sold near wines from Spain. Unfortunately, the selection is often tiny compared to other wines, but that shouldn’t inhibit you from buying one or two bottles. One of the downsides of liking Portuguese wines is that relatively few wine and liquor stores carry a good selection of dry Portuguese wine. That’s puzzling to me because the price points for Portuguese dry wines are excellent, they provide high value, and distributors, from what 2016 QUINTA DO MURÇAS I’m told, don’t have ASSOBIO DOURO, HERDADO DO difficulty acquiring ESPORÃO (13% ABV, $12-16): A them. While my traditional Douro blend on the preference is to support lighter side with bright blueberry local wine merchants, and cranberry flavors and a mild, there are times when spicy finish. Very pleasant, foodgoing online makes friendly, everyday wine with mild good sense. Multiple tannins. Great value.

Tasting Notes

2016 QUINTO DO ATAÍDE DOURO VINHA TINTO, SYMINGTON FAMILY ESTATE

(13.5% ABV, $19-26): Organic grape blend with blackberry, raspberry, plum, cocoa, and strawberry flavors. Bold and feisty with striking acidity and crunchy tannins. Very tasty right through the long finish. 2017 QUINTA VALE D. MARIA VINHAS DO SABOR SUPERIOR, VAN ZELLERS & CO. (14% ABV, $17-25):

Tom Greene has spent a lifetime fishing and helping others to fish. Along the way, he collected some of the most impressive antique fishing reels, lures and other gear. I first interviewed Tom twelve years ago, in his office at Custom Rod & Reel, the tackle store he owned for 43 years and recently sold. His office then, and his house now, was jammed with fishing tackle from across many decades. When we met recently, I slowly started to realize the age and authenticity of all this gear. A onehundred-year-old fishing reel has a very distinct look. He explained to me why some of the antique reels look like a piece of fine jewelry, “because these were made by watchmakers. Wealthy fishermen wanted good reels, so they commissioned local watchmakers because they had the tools and understood gears,” he told me with the enthusiasm of someone who just learned this fact, but obviously, he learned this years ago.

We could dedicate an entire issue of this magazine explaining the history and evolution of sports fishing tackle over the last century. I imagine most residents are not eager for that level of knowledge when modern equipment is widely available at every price point. “Sometimes the packaging is more valuable than the item,” Tom jokes. As we walk from one room to the next, our conversation jumps from topic to topic as Tom describes everything effortlessly. I, like many people, remember my first fishing experiences with vivid clarity. Many of those memories were with my father, and I have incredible memories of my own children when fishing. The physical tools that facilitated those memories will always have value for generations to come.

The technological advancement of fishing tackle is often overlooked among humanity’s achievements, like discovering new continents or flying in air or space — but many people fish and need fish to survive. The invention of the reel, a cylinder with line wrapped around it and the means for the line to go in and out, yeah, that was a game-changer for fish populations worldwide. Thank the Chinese in the late-18th century for the first versions, but more modern versions that were designed for specific species of fish really took hold in the mid-19th century. But the last hundred years are represented a lot by what Tommie has personally collected. I spent some time on eBay and other sites looking at what people are selling and comparing items to what Tommie showed me. The world of antique fishing gear trading is alive and active.

WEALTHY FISHERMEN WANTED GOOD REELS, SO THEY COMMISSIONED LOCAL WATCHMAKERS BECAUSE THEY HAD THE TOOLS AND UNDERSTOOD GEARS. — TOM GREENE

“What are you going to do with all this stuff?” I asked. Sorry dear readers, I did not get a clear answer. I think there is a lifetime of attachment to the collection. He has tried to sell the items through a collaboration, but that ended with a bad taste. Tommie’s website (antiquereels.com) does have what appears to be a complete inventory of the items and prices. Transactions are handled via email, telephone and in-person. Tom joked, “well, I can’t take it with me.”

“The is the same reel from the movie Jaws, a Penn International 16/0, the top of the Penn line in the ‘70’s” according to Tom. Fun Fact: In 1979, Frank Mundus, the inspiration for Robert Shaw’s character in the film Jaws, caught the largest mako shark ever on rod and reel, weighing in at 1,080 pounds, also with one of these reels.

“Look closely as the “windshield wiper arm” works back and forth to guide the line on smoothly,” Tommie explains as I watch the mechanism work in a manner I had never seen before. Tommie has a remarkable collection of just these reels from the 1920’s — with some fantastic stories to go along with several of them. “I owned the tackle store for 43 years. A lot of this stuff came from people just stopping by the store after cleaning out a closet, and they would tell me the story behind the person that once owned the reel or lure or whatever.” Y

The Chicken Box & More. • SOUTHERN This small spot with just

a couple of tables serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and does a robust take-out business. The shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs are a top-notch breakfast or a perfect “breakfast-for-dinner” option. The fried pork chops were delicately coated and crispy. We tried them with a classic potato salad and collard greens. The greens were stellar — they were juicy and perfectly seasoned with bits of pork supplying a pleasing heft. And who doesn’t love a marvelous fried chicken wing? If you are searching for a solidly authentic taste of comfort, the meatloaf is a must. 204 N Flagler Avenue, 954-781-7400

The Poké Company. • POKÉ If you haven’t tried a poke bowl, now

Then top your bowl with everything from pickled ginger to tempura flakes. There are an infinite amount of choices. If bowls aren’t your thing, you can build your own poké burrito. 1154 N. Federal Highway, 754-220-8933

Midwestern Luxury

PENDRY, CHICAGO The Pendry Chicago on the famed Michigan Avenue includes all the trappings of a modern luxury big city hotel with a twist of history. Located in the landmark Art Deco style Carbon & Carbide building, the property was recently converted to a hotel and honors the building’s past with a contemporary flair. The Pendry has four bar and restaurant offerings, including a rooftop option (for when it’s not too cold or windy). Venteux, is modeled after a Parisian brasserie, with cozy banquettes and massive windows along with outdoor cafe seating options. From the Navy Pier, the Art Institute of Chicago, to shopping on the Magnificent Mile — the Windy City has plenty to offer. The area is also home to several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. (Visit flwright. org/tours/robie for tour information.)

With international travel being somewhat “iffy” these days, don’t forget we have impressive cities right here at home. Y

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone is the best. I had my left hip done using the SPAIRE technique and the recovery was so incredible I decided to have my right hip done.” ~Bettina Kapp

“I went to three orthopedic surgeons and Dr. Leone was the only one who discovered the underlying cause of my knee pain. Four days after my knee revision surgery I was walking eight miles.” ~Dan Bell
