Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone put my body back together. I was a long-time runner and now at 83-years-old all my pain is finally gone!”

~Tracey M, full and partial knee replacement patient

“I will forever be grateful to Dr. Leone and his amazing staff at Holy Cross. I can honestly say Dr. Leone is the most kind, patient, incredible doctor I have ever met. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

~Liyah, 32 years old, total hip replacement patient

No one likes to acknowledge they are getting older. And I have to admit that when I see a photo of myself these days, I'm always taken back a bit. You see, I half expect to see a picture of my 21-year-old self — not the 56-year-old version of me. So as I was working on my column last month, I noticed that I looked pretty terrific in my headshot. (Thank you Debra Todd.) But as we all know, a skilled portrait photographer will capture your best self. They give directions such as "turn a quarter-inch to the right" or "tilt your head up." And then, of course, there is the miracle of Adobe Photoshop. I wish I could keep that same headshot forever. But the truth is I am getting older, and I prefer a current photo of myself. Of course, procuring a new one these days presents a myriad of challenges. Due to Covid-19, I avoid any unnecessary trips into the outside world, which unfortunately includes excursions to the hair salon. So I am sporting two distinctly different hair colors. I'd like to think I am starting a new trend, but it's doubtful. Full disclosure: I am extra cautious about outings because I have had quite a few medical appointments lately. And all of these appointments, along with surgery and a myriad of tests have given me a new appreciation of the aging process. So, I embrace my steely gray hair, which is not the sort of fashionable white I envisioned. I was hoping my gray would grow in, and I would magically look like one of those chic and stylish older women in a Banana Republic catalog. Yeah, not so much. I imagine it is imperative to look like a model before your hair turns gray if you want to look like a model after your hair turns gray. Nowadays, my mane is more reminiscent of a field mouse with a few white telephone wire-like strands evenly dispersed. Curiously, some especially wire-like specimens are conspicuously clustered around my ears. Maybe those white ones will come in handy when the WiFi fails. Or perhaps I could nab the part of Frau Blücher in a remake of "Young Frankenstein."

Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher in the Mel Brooks classic film “Young Frankenstein” — or shall we say, Fronkenshteen?

But my gray is a badge of having made it this far. So I am keeping it. Until I change my mind. I have spent countless hours deep in online research for tips on going gray gracefully. I've discovered that there is no easy path. I pretty much have committed to looking ridiculous during this process. Good thing I'm not going anywhere anyway. What I have learned is that apparently, going gray is a trend. Although, I think that might not be so accurate as I can't think of many girlfriends who sport gray hair. And that's good too. Who knows? At some point, I may decide gray hair isn't for me. Everyone needs to be comfortable in their own skin — or hair.

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans: Next Steps The approval process for the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club redevelopment plans is starting to accelerate. Over the next few months, there will be multiple meetings of the city’s boards and the City Commission to vote on various items, including the site plan, development agreement and property rezoning. All of the meetings will be public hearings. Last November, the City Commission approved on first reading an ordinance that will create a new Yacht Club Mixed-Use (YC-MU) zoning district. The new zoning district was requested by Terry Paterson, owner and developer of the yacht club, because the yacht club property is currently zoned as a business district that doesn’t allow for a residential component. In December, Paterson formally submitted a site plan to the City for initial review by the Development Review Committee. According to the latest plans, Paterson is proposing to build 21 luxury townhomes and one singlefamily home on a portion of the yacht club property that is currently used for tennis courts and parking, and then use the proceeds from the sale of the residential units to subsidize a new yacht club facility. On Jan. 5, the Planning and Zoning Board is scheduled to review the development agreement, which

is a revised version of the one it began reviewing last August. The development agreement will then go to the City Commission for two readings. In February, the site plan is expected to be reviewed by the Community Appearance Board and the Marine Advisory Board. In March, the site plan is scheduled to go to the Planning and Zoning Board for approval. It will then go to the City Commission for two readings. An ordinance to rezone the yacht club property under the new YCMU zoning district will go before the Planning and Zoning Board for one reading, and then to the City

Commission for two readings. All of the second readings will go to the City Commission as a package at the same meeting. Besides the new zoning district, the property rezoning, the development agreement and site plan, there will be second readings for an amendment to the city’s Comprehensive Plan that will allow residential units on the yacht club property, and a land use plan amendment that will allow up to 22 residential units to be built on the property. If all the items are approved, the yacht club redevelopment plans would then enter the permitting phase. Y

Lighthouse Point Resident Dr. James C. Acheson Donates Funds to Benefit Police Department Lighthouse Point philanthropist Dr. James C. Acheson has offered his financial support to provide the city’s police department with a vehicle that will be used as a mobile command post for special operations and to deploy resources during critical incidents. Through the James C. Acheson Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward, Acheson has donated a total of $41,500 to purchase a 2021 Ford F250 pickup truck outfitted with emergency equipment. “Dr. Acheson has been a very supportive member of our community for many years,” said Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata. “We’re extremely grateful for his generosity in providing us with the resources to be able to purchase this much-needed vehicle, which is going to allow us to carry out many important law enforcement functions.” Licata anticipates the new vehicle will arrive in February. It was ordered from the factory and is being built to meet the police department’s specifications. The pickup truck will be used as a high-water vehicle during

hurricanes and tropical storms, for transporting the police vessel and mobile digital speed display trailer and message board, transporting evidence, property, and equipment during special events, and for deploying barricades during latenight traffic accidents, road closures and crime scenes. Licata noted that, in the past, during emergency situations and hurricanes, local auto vendor Tom Sheehan of Sheehan Buick GMC has made pickup trucks available for the police department when there has been a need. “Sometimes we have flooding and debris in the roadways,” said Licata. “The new Ford pickup truck, purchased through Dr. Acheson’s financial gift, “will provide us with readily available access to a vehicle that can help our officers get to tough-to-reach locations." Acheson, who has lived in Lighthouse Point for nearly 30 years, has helped fund other items for the city’s first responders over the years, including a state-of-the-art Stryker stretcher and patient loading system that was installed in one of the fire department’s rescue trucks in

2018, and an advanced life support training manikin purchased in 2016. Prior to that, Acheson donated a Life Pak 15, which is a portable EKG monitor and defibrillator. In 2019, a monetary gift from Acheson provided the fire department with state-of-the-art fire hoods and other firefighting gear, as well as a computer software upgrade to digitize its process for fire inspections and pre-fire planning of all businesses in the city. Also in 2019, Acheson contributed $35,000 toward a project at Frank McDonough Park that transformed two racquetball courts into an outdoor adult fitness area. Installation of the new fitness equipment was completed last summer. As per an ordinance adopted in 2017, gifts to the city valued at $20,000 or more are required to be accepted by the Lighthouse Point City Commission. In December, the City Commission approved the acceptance of the financial gift from the James C. Acheson Fund for the purchase of the new Ford pickup truck for the police department. Y

Thieves Are Stealing Checks from Lighthouse Point Post Office Drop-Off Boxes When two men from Opa-Locka were arrested for stealing mail from one of the drive-thru mailboxes at the Lighthouse Point Post Office on Oct. 27 of last year, shortly before the November election, it raised concern among many about the problem of ballot theft. The pieces of stolen mail retrieved from the perpetrators’ SUV did include two election ballots, but the blue drop-off boxes outside the Lighthouse Point Post Office have been the subject of a proliferation of thefts that began at the end of 2019. The cases involve checks that have been stolen from the mailboxes, then either fraudulently altered or duplicated, and cashed. According to Lighthouse Point Police Department records dating from Jan. 1, 2019 to Dec. 15, 2020, there have been 20 cases involving checks stolen from the mailboxes at the Lighthouse Point Post Office. In some instances, if the victim deposited several checks in a mailbox at one time, all of those checks were stolen, altered and cashed. Most of the thefts occurred at the drive-thru mailboxes on the east side of the post office, but at least two happened at the blue mailbox next to the front door of the post office. One victim had placed the envelopes containing checks in the drop-off box in the lobby. Mail thieves use a variety of homemade devices to extract pieces of mail from the drop-off boxes. The device is often created with a weight attached to a rope with duct tape facing out, so the mail will stick to it. Using a process known as check “washing,” the thieves erase the ink on a check with chemicals found in common household cleaning products

and then rewrite the checks to themselves, usually increasing the amount payable by hundreds and even thousands of dollars. In April 2020, a victim placed several bill payments and Easter cards in a drive-thru mailbox at the Lighthouse Point post office. A few days later, she discovered her checking account had been drained to a zero balance. The check she had sent to Florida Power & Light (FPL) for $133 had been cashed for $6,133. It was no longer made out to FPL, but to someone named Thomas Mutry. In June 2020, a resident placed a check made out to Visa for $1,796 in an outside mailbox. The check was stolen, washed and made out to Eber J. Maldonado in the amount of $5,796. In August 2020, at one of the drive-up mailboxes, a resident dropped off a check for $15,000 made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The criminal who stole the check kept the amount and date the same, but made the check payable to someone named Emmanuel A. Castaneta. In February 2020, a Lighthouse Point business owner used a drivethru mailbox to send several checks drawn on the business account to vendors the company uses. Two of the checks were stolen and counterfeited. In that same month, a woman used an outside mailbox to mail a check for $60 to pay her lawn service. The check was stolen, washed and made payable to Oscar A. Castro in the amount of $1,250. Sometimes, the thieves actually lower the amount of the stolen

check. A check for $30,258 that was mailed to the Internal Revenue Service was changed to the amount of $9,500. Someone named Hendrik Matos Suero attempted to cash the check, but the transaction was canceled because of a signature discrepancy. Mail Fraud Team Leader Blanca Alvarez, of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Miami Division, advised that, when dropping off mail, it’s best to hand it directly to a post office employee or to put it in the slot in the lobby. She added that outdoor collection boxes should be used during the day if mail is deposited before the final pick-up, but not overnight or over the weekend. The two suspects arrested on Oct. 27, 2020 for stealing from the Lighthouse Point drive-thru mailbox — 28-yearold Junior Alexander Cabral and 20-year-old Vladimir Cabral-Cuevas — were suspects in previous mail thefts that occurred at the Lighthouse Point Post Office, according to police reports. Federal charges have been brought against the men — theft or receipt of stolen mail matter and conspiracy to commit the offense. Both were released from jail, each on a $150,000 bond, and are awaiting arraignment and a preliminary examination hearing scheduled for February 12, 2021 at the U.S. District Court Southern District of Florida in Fort Lauderdale. The Lighthouse Point Police Department is working in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on the investigation. Y

Fisher Family Pier: City Commission to Decide Fees for Fishing Passes and when Sightseers Will Start Paying Admission POMPANO BEACH The Pompano Beach City Commission voted last month in favor of an ordinance establishing fees for annual and semiannual fishing passes for the Fisher Family Pier. The fee for a resident annual pass is $547.50; a non-resident annual pass is $1,095; a resident semiannual pass is $273.75; and a non-resident semiannual pass is $547.50. There has been no charge for sightseers to access the pier since its opening last May. However, in June of last year, a daily fishing rate was implemented at $6 per person. From June to October 2020, the monthly average of fishermen on the pier was approximately 1,832 patrons. For that same period, the pier had a total of 9,164 fishermen, which generated $$54,984 in revenue, according to Recreation Programs Administrator Mark Beaudreau. Based on the monthly average, the projected monthly revenue for fishing could be approximately $11,000, using the daily fishing rate of $6 per person. Beaudreau emphasized to the Commission that the fee for the annual resident pass ($547.50) “may appear to be a lot,” but when broken down on a daily rate, it’s only $1.50 a day. From May to October 2020, the monthly average of sightseers visiting the pier was 17,804, and the total number of sightseers was 106,829. The City Commission established pier entry fees for sightseers last year, but decided not to implement them right away to allow residents and visitors to discover the new pier. pass is $2 per person (adults). There is no fee for children 10 years old and under, or for veterans and active-duty military. A residentsonly annual sightseeing pass is $20, for use by a group of up to 10 people. At its Jan. 26 meeting, the City Commission is scheduled to cast a final vote on the new fishing pass fees during a second reading of the ordinance. If approved, the fees will take effect immediately. The Commission is also expected to determine when sightseers will have to start paying a fee to access the pier

Tyler Ziontz with son Cole, 8, at the Fisher Family Pier Jeff Graves for Lighthouse Point magazine

At last month’s meeting, Commissioner Andrea McGee of District 1, where the pier is located, proposed changing the $20 annual resident sightseeing pass from being valid for groups of up to 10 people, to being valid for groups of up to four people to make it easier for the city to collect general information regarding users of the pier, such as residents versus non-residents. The proposal is scheduled to be discussed at the City Commission meeting on Jan. 26. Y

Construction of The New Centennial Park Pavilion Is About to Get Underway

POMPANO BEACH Centennial Park — the 5-acre grounds surrounding the historic Sample-McDougald House — will soon be getting an open-air pavilion where members of the community will be able to hold special events. The new 4,000-square-foot pavilion and other enhancements to the park, will be funded by the city’s G.O. Bond. Construction is expected to begin in January or early February, and should be completed this summer, according to Horacio Danovich, the city’s capital improvements and Innovation District director. The Sample-McDougald House, which dates to 1916, is located at 450 NE 10th Street. The new pavilion will be built east of the house as a venue for weddings, receptions, fundraisers, parties and other events.

The cost of the Centennial Park project is approximately $1.2 million. The project includes the installation of a concrete pad, utility connections, lighting, and an ADA accessible pedestrian path that will connect the pavilion to the SampleMcDougald House. The pavilion will have its own bathrooms and kitchen. New trees and shrubs will be planted along the west side of the pavilion. In addition, the existing vegetable garden will be expanded,

and grasses will be installed in and around the retention area. The pavilion will be made of steel. It was decided not to use wood due to maintenance, strength and longevity, said Danovich. The pavilion will have large industrial-style ceiling fans to help keep the area cool. The pavilion columns will be placed in a way that will allow for an air-conditioning system to be added, perhaps at some point in the future, with minor impacts to the facility. Initially, the project was scheduled to be funded with the second phase of bond monies the city will get when it sells the remaining G.O. Bonds by fall of this year (the first bonds were sold in the fall of 2018). The Sample-McDougald House depends on revenue from weddings and receptions held on the grounds, but due to COVID-19, there have been no events. Danovich said that to help the house “get back on track” and continue to operate efficiently, the pavilion will be built “sooner rather than later,” using funding from the first phase of bond monies. Youth Sports Complex on Former Elks Club Site to Begin Construction Soon POMPANO BEACH The Youth Sports Complex that will be built on the former Elks Club property across from the Pompano Beach Airpark will be getting underway soon as one of the city’s G.O. bond projects. The 10-acre site, located at 700 NE 10th Street, will be transformed into four rectangular multipurpose sports fields: two large fields with synthetic turf and lighting; and for younger ages, two smaller natural-turf fields without lighting. The approximately $6.4 million project, funded entirely with G.O. bond proceeds, will also include a new clubhouse, parking, landscaping, bleachers and fencing. The parking area will be shared with Centennial Park — the grounds that surround the Sample-McDougald House across the street — when special events are held there. Danovich said “one of the most beautiful pieces” of the Youth Sports Complex will be the new 4,000-square-foot clubhouse, which has a “futuristic” and “fun” design. The clubhouse includes a concession area, a lobby, an entrance that can also be used for storing equipment, an office for staff to manage operations within the park during regular hours, bathrooms

and changing rooms. The first phase of the project will consist of the removal and relocation of existing trees, site preparation and grading, drainage, sewer, sanitary, as well as the new clubhouse shell and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The second phase of the project is expected to begin in September 2021. It will consist of the four sports fields, landscaping, parking, and final completion of all interior and exterior finishes of the new clubhouse. The entire project should be completed by February 2023, said Danovich. The new sports complex is part of the city’s vision of making NE 10 Street “a parks-like corridor,” said Danovich. The city purchased the former Elks Club property, located near Pompano Community Park, in 2017 for $5.5 million, which was reimbursed to the city’s General Fund with G.O. Bond proceeds. Y

Personal Development

Win Big in 2021

BY CRAIG HALEY

THE YEAR 2020 HAS BEEN UNIQUE. WE HAD A WORLDWIDE SHUTDOWN, BUSINESSES CLOSED OR LOST MUCH OF THEIR REVENUE, AND ROUGHLY 1.46 million have died from Covid-19. It hasn't been easy. So, the question is, how do we prepare ourselves to win big in 2021? How do we come back stronger than ever to achieve our goals and make a huge comeback after a challenging year? I want to share a few strategies and mindsets to get you thinking in the right direction so you can succeed at the highest level in 2021.

Strategy #1: Define what success is to you. Believe it or not, everyone has a different definition of success. For some people it is lots of money, for others, it is lots of free time For some, it's doing what they love for a living. To make this year a fantastic year, you have to determine what success means to you. Once you decide that, you can go after it. Strategy #2: Determine your three big goals. Author Darren Hardy says that if you have more than three goals, you don't have any. Now, understand that I am not saying you should not want many things, have a bucket list, etc. I am saying that by reaching your three big goals, a lot of your other goals will be achieved. An excellent approach is to define one professional goal, one fitness related goal, and one personal or family-related goal. This way, you are working to be a balanced achiever, and your journey through life will be more comfortable and steady. Remember, clarity is power. Strategy #3: Take massive action! This is where the rubber meets the road. It's in the actions you take every day. When the plane leaves the runway, it uses a tremendous amount of fuel to reach cruising altitude. Once it has attained that level, the plane uses far less fuel. It’s the same thing with goal achievement. The hardest part is getting started, developing new habits, and getting your new 46 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

routines. However, after time, you will see the results coming in, and the once challenging new habits and routines, will become much more manageable. Remember this; bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with.

Strategy #4: Don't compare yourself to anyone else. This is a big one to remember. Author Rachel Hollis writes that "comparison is the stealer of joy," and I believe she is 100% right. It's tempting to scroll through social media and compare your life and circumstances to others. You see old friends taking extraordinary vacations, moving into new homes, or driving luxury cars. Naturally, you start to believe you will never get to that level. Remember that everyone runs their own race, and has their own path to follow. Comparing your circumstances to another person's is flat out crazy. Social media is the "highlight reel" of people's lives. Most people don't post their struggles, challenges and problems. There is no secret to success other than good old-fashioned hard work. If you are ready to make 2021 your comeback year, roll up your sleeves, create clarity on what you want, and take massive action. Sending positive vibes and thoughts to you all! Legal Matters

Crucial Documents in a Crisis BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

THE PANDEMIC HAS CHANGED ALMOST EVERYTHING. BUT CERTAIN LEGAL DOCUMENTS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. If you need to be hospitalized in Florida, it is imperative that you have a designation of health care surrogate and living will with proper wording so there will be no problems. Your surrogate will be able to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to communicate. Even if the hospital does not allow visitors due to the pandemic, your surrogate can talk to the doctors and make decisions on the phone or e-mail. All your surrogate needs to do is e-mail or fax a copy of your document to the hospital. If there is no hope to save you, that surrogate would be authorized to “pull the plug” based on the living will. The durable power of attorney is also important to allow someone to take over your legal and financial

affairs. The Florida law changed in 2011. If you have an old durable power of attorney, it should be redone. If you should die, your will or revocable living trust will determine who inherits your assets. The trust is essential to consider if you own your home or other real estate, because it avoids probate. Probate can tie up your property for many months and prevent your heirs from selling without a court order. They would have to continue to pay taxes, maintenance, mortgage, utilities etc., in addition to thousands of dollars in attorney fees and court costs. A life estate deed is another option to consider to avoid probate. Your attorney can discuss the different options and the benefits of each one. During this time of social distancing, I am providing free telephone consultations to discuss Estate Planning and protecting yourself if you are incapacitated. In these unsettling times, putting your house in order can provide peace of mind. Once you have valid documents, hopefully you won’t need them. Yogi Berra used to say: “That’s the insurance when you don’t have it, that’s when you need it.” Stay well. Y Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates, probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. Get Psyched

The Social Media Abyss BY DR. JILL SELBACH

WHO KNEW THAT WHAT BEGAN IN THE 1970S AS AN AVENUE TO SHARE FILES AND READ ABOUT NEWS AND EVENTS WOULD burgeon into what is now mainstream social media. At its inception, we could send a message to a friend via e-mail or join a discussion forum with thousands of others and share ideas. Social media has since evolved into a sophisticated network of online interactions, content-sharing and collaboration. With just one click, we are connected with friends and family worldwide and receive information about current events and important issues. Since March of 2020, our lives have drastically changed how we work, learn and socialize. Our screens consume our attention. We now have so many social media sites from which to choose. There is Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google+, Tumbler, Instagram, Snapchat, Flickr and Vine, to name a few. Certain sites appeal to a younger crowd, some are for social connection and dating, while others are for business connections. While most of us appreciate the convenience with which we can communicate, there is a dark side to posting quick, ill-considered responses or comments. Once posted, it is out on the web for good. Another concern with social media is the illusion of relationships, which may or may not exist. While most of us can differentiate close relationships from acquaintances, some over-estimate the quality and depth of online contacts. In close relationships, we typically find trust, support and affection. These relationships are extremely beneficial to overall health, longevity, and a happy life. Social media contacts are much more diverse; some are close friends, while others are acquaintances or coworkers from decades ago. When realistically assessing these contacts and the meaning they play social media becomes a wonderful way to connect and share. When these relationships are unrealistically assessed, believing them to be closer and deeper, one can go down a slippery slope. Many studies have linked social media with depression. When social media is used in place of developing solid relationships, feelings of belongingness and connection decrease, and feelings of isolation increase significantly. We are learning more and more about the adverse effects of isolation, especially how detrimental it is to health.

The Grass is Always Greener Phenomenon An everyday activity on Facebook is the act of "liking" someone's posts. We post a picture or a comment and people respond positively or "like" it. This turns into a feedback loop that shapes our behavior, triggering our pleasure centers like playing the slot machines. Posting and checking reactions to our posts become more and more frequent. We begin to wonder why Susan did not "like" the photo we posted? She just commented on Janet's picture! It can develop into a feeling of isolation as we realize these "Facebook friends" are not the relationships we crave as humans; physical, in-person contact, with back-and-forth meaningful communication ("conversation") and not sound bites. Relationships are built on trust and time spent together. Social media can be an avenue for some to make unfair comparisons. A common report in therapy is that so and so is "happily married," "successfully raising her kids," "experiencing financial fortune" due to the opulent lifestyle the "friend" is posting; believing that what they see, which is what is selectively posted, is the general state of that person's life. Looking at posts and feeling that everyone else is enjoying life and has it better. The next step is to compare your marriage, children, career, etc. in life and believe that old "the grass is always greener," which is a cognitive bias. The key here, as with most everything in life, is balance. It is essential to cultivate "real" relationships that feed those interpersonal needs for connection, trust and intimacy. Tidbits & Trivia

My Bucket List BY JIM TERLIZZI

IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME TO MAKE A BUCKET LIST UNTIL LAST WEEK AT CHURCH SERVICES. I am a member of the congregation of the First Church of the Wallet. Our pastor, Rev. Iggy Swag, gave a sermon in which he said that if we made a bucket list (and a large donation), we would not die until we accomplished all of the items on the list. Ergo, I have delineated the following quests: Buy a panda. In anticipation, I have already planted a patch of bamboo. This could be profitable. I can charge an exorbitant fee to have your picture taken with this adorable creature. Bowl a 300 game and convert a 7-10 split on the same day. (First I will have to have my hernia repaired.) Sail on a schooner and spit into the wind. (This will have to wait until after Covid, as the crew will not take kindly to it.) Go a full week without seeing a doctor. Learn to play the didgeridoo, after which I shall establish the Lighthouse Point Aboriginal Philharmonic Orchestra and Book Club. Eat liver. This one will be difficult. I hate liver. People

always say: “You’ve never eaten it the way I make it.” Invariably, no matter how they make it, it still sucks. Go six weeks without shaving. This may not sound like much, but my wife despises beards. If I do it, I won’t have to worry about eating liver, or anything else for that matter, as she will stop cooking. Eat six pounds of endive in one sitting. Seemingly trivial, until you try to find endive in the stores. Not in Sprouts, Aldi, Whole Foods. Nada. Learn to speak another language. (My wife says I should learn to speak English first.) I am torn between Hindi and Mandarin Chinese. Hindi should take a while. It has forty consonants and ten vowels. It is spoken in India and Fiji. I should be ready to visit Fiji sometime in the next century. Learn to crochet. In time I could corner the market in antimacassars. (For you youngsters, they are those doily things they used to put on the backs of chairs to protect them from greasy heads.) Buy a smartphone and learn to use it. Then I can be as boorish as the rest of the population — playing with my phone instead of engaging in conversation. Right now, I have a dumb phone. It only makes calls and receives calls. (Wait a minute, isn’t that what a phone is supposed to do?) Swim the English Channel. First, I will need to learn how to swim. Then I will need to find the English Chanel. Somewhere in England, I guess. If Rev. Iggy is right, I shall live until the Andromeda galaxy collides with the Milky Way in 4.5-billion years. I should be able to find some endive between now and then. If Rev. Iggy is wrong, I hope God has a sense of humor. Y

Be Well

Avocado: Veggie or Fruit?

BY MARLENE R WOLF, MD, FAAFP

A STORMY JULY DAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA. NOT THE TYPE OF RAIN WHERE YOU NEED TO BOOK A STALL ON NOAH’S ARK. A GOOD DAY TO BAKE, WHICH IS EVERY DAY SINCE MY CRANKY, CRUEL COUSIN COVID CAME TO VISIT IN 2020. The rain activated my food preparation gene. I was lucky and found an avocado in the vegetable bin of my refrigerator. Please, the avocado begged mercifully; I am trapped with these veggies and they are not part of my family.

According to the Harvard Health Letter (2018) in an article titled "Vegetable of the Month: Avocado," avocados are fruit, with one ample seed smack in the center. I found it curious that an article called "Vegetable of the Month" ABOVE Avocado toast with cherry tomatoes, black sesame seeds and a

featured a fruit. Maybe the avocados in the veggie bin of the author's refrigerator became crazed and felt trapped. With irrational enthusiasm to be freed, the avocados agreed to be called a vegetable — sort of like a witness protection program for produce. Avocado is the active partner in our delicious guacamole, scrumptious salads, tasty toast, avocado oil, and offered as a spectacular sideshow to many a meal. This fruit is heart-healthy, with good unsaturated fat, full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. “Researchers have shown that avocados are good for so many body systems — cardiovascular, ocular, bone, and gastrointestinal …[and] may also protect against certain cancers and have the potential to inhibit cancer cell growth," writes Meszaros (2020). No wonder this fruit is disguised as a vegetable in the witness protection program. The other fruits were clearly jealous of such accolades. My avocado was ready to take the plunge out of the veggie bin. It is with joyful sadness that the avocado sacrificed so much on this rainy day. Being skinned, knifed, sliced, pulverized, mixed with cocoa, and then baked to perfection, cooled, sliced again and frozen. This fruit of an avocado lost its identity, disguised by its chocolate companion. But the health benefits shined on. Magically, the avocado was transformed into delicious, fudgy, healthy, brownies! Thanks, Nicole Hunn of Gluten on a Shoestring, for this recipe, gluten free avocados brownie recipe. My homemade avocado brownies gather great compliments. Yummy, oh so fudgy, delicious, often requested by family and friends. Someday, these brownies will be shared at social events again — as soon as that creepy Cousin Covid capitulates and crawls, however slowly, out of our lives. Sticky Dirty Chai Buns BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER AS WE WELCOME 2021 WITH HUGE HOPES FOR BETTER TIMES, I AM DOING EVERYTHING IN MY power to bring good luck to the new year. So I am borrowing a page out of the the Jewish New Year (Rosh HaShanah) playbook and serving sweet foods to usher in a sweet year. These sticky buns with a twist would be a welcome addition to any New Year’s Day brunch. I have a lot riding on these buns; so hopefully, they are sweet enough to bring about better times for my entire family. Of course, if all it took to flatten the curve were a batch of baked goods, we’d all be in the clear. Yet, with loads of butter, sugar and spice, these buns might give rise to curves of a different sort. This recipe was inspired by my daughter’s favorite coffee drink — the dirty chai tea latte. The bold brew combines espresso and chai tea flavored with warm spices like cinnamon and cardamom. The instant espresso used in these buns doesn’t impart a strong coffee flavor, but it does offset the copious amount of sugar. Here’s to a sweet and spicy new year. >>>

4-5 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 ½ teaspoons ground cardamom 1 teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground allspice ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

PREPARATION 1 Lightly grease a large bowl and set it aside. In a small bowl, mix the milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar and the yeast. Set aside until foamy, about 5 minutes. 2 In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the mixing attachment, combine the flour, salt and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add the milk mixture and egg to the flour and mix the dough on low until almost combined. Add the butter, and continue to mix until the butter is mixed into the dough. Switch to the dough hook and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 3 to 5 minutes. The dough will be moist, but it should mostly pull away from the sides of the bowl. If the dough is very sticky, add a bit more flour — no more than a tablespoon. Transfer the dough to the lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. It should double in size in about an hour. 3 While the dough rises, prepare the topping. Butter

Chenin Blanc: South African Delight BY DAVID EHRENFRIED WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A GLASS OF CHENIN BLANC? THIS ISN'T A TEST, SO IT'S OKAY IF YOU DON'T REMEMBER OR DON'T RECALL EVER TASTING THIS KIND of wine. It's been at least a couple years for me—that is until deciding to write this column about South African Chenin Blanc, a versatile and affordable, usually light-bodied white wine with racy acidity plus honey and assorted fruit flavors like apples, pears, melon, Meyer lemon, and pineapple.

Ordinarily, I would typically write about a red wine this time of year. However, this summer, I purchased several different South African Chenin Blanc (also called Steen), and I just got around to trying them. It's no longer summer where I am, but I figured it's late spring or like summer in South Africa, and I'd envision myself sitting on a veranda in a warm evening breeze—overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—sipping this popular South African white wine. Of course it doesn't have to be summer, or like summer, to drink Chenin Blanc. If you're having chicken or seafood for dinner, salad for lunch, or wondering what to drink with sushi, other Asian or light Mediterranean food, South African Chenin Blanc can be a delicious pick any time of year. If you haven't had quality South African Chenin Blanc, hopefully, this column will whet your appetite to try some. Personally, I liked the versions we tasted a lot. Made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes, they were remarkably consistent in their flavors and quality. They were tasty, friendly, relatively inexpensive, and distinctive but nice changes from more familiar white wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In fact, in the wine spectrum, the Chenin Blanc wines we drank fit right between those wines. They weren't as light or steely as Sauvignon Blanc and were generally lighter and less bold than Chardonnay. Pleasantly, all except one of these wines cost between $9 and $19 a bottle—the exception cost about $26. That made these wines pretty good values in my book. But so you know, I checked various wine critics' ratings before these purchases and deliberately avoided less desirable Chenin Blanc wines and cheap, lower quality mass-produced versions that are made in significant quantities in South Africa.

A Brief Primer on Chenin Blanc Like many important grape varietals, Chenin Blanc originated in France, although its vines are now grown in many countries worldwide. The earliest references to Chenin Blanc date to the 9th century in western France's Loire River Valley region, still the principal home of French Chenin Blanc. Over the centuries, the French evolved and perfected many Chenin Blanc styles, including dry and sweet still wines and sparkling wines know as Crèmant de Loire. The lighter still wines made in France today are often floral with understated fruit and a combination of creaminess and minerality. The best heavier and sweeter wines are distinctive for their silkiness, vivid fruit and honey notes, and, due to their intriguingly high acidity, a remarkable ability to age and improve for decades. For example, Vouvray—which is Chenin Blanc made from grapes grown and vinified in the Vouvray growing area of the Loire Valley—is made in all three styles, although the lighter styles in my >>>

<<< experience tend to be more medium-weight. The most celebrated are the sweet and semi-dry wines made from grapes grown in Vouvray's choicest clay soils. Among the best producers of these nectar-like wines is Domaine Huet. Huets wines are truly special, not terribly expensive, and if you're curious to try some, available through numerous better wine shops and online sites. Anyway, Chenin Blanc vines came to South Africa in the 17th century courtesy of the Dutch East India Company. They thrived in the Western Cape region along South Africa's Atlantic coast, so much so that today South Africa is the largest producer of Chenin Blanc, accounting for 40% or more of the world's Chenin Blanc production. While not all is high quality, a cadre of South African growers and winemakers are making plenty of delicious and delightful Chenin Blanc wines that to me, are quite different from their French counterparts. Although some wine critics argue that even the best South African Chenin Blanc wines have far to go to match the best Loire Chenin Blancs, my opinion is such comparisons are mostly irrelevant. South African Chenin Blanc wines are mostly light to medium weight wines from grapes grown under quite different conditions than Loire wines. The Western Cape has a warmer climate, different soils, and generally more stable growing conditions than the Loire, which has a cooler climate and more fickle weather. Although some wonderful sweet Chenin Blanc wines are made in South Africa, grapes from most of the best vineyards are used mainly for producing dry wines that stand on their own terms. These vineyards and winemakers deliver consistently fresh, crisp, interesting, and easy-to-drink wines that nicely balance Chenin Blanc's naturally high acidity with a mixture of potent fruit flavors and aromas, a bit of creaminess, and an appetizing, sometimes mildly spicy finish. The wines we tried confirmed this. What to Buy When purchasing unfamiliar wines, sometimes it's tempting to buy just one or two very inexpensive bottles to see if we like the style. Chances are you won't be doing that. For South African Chenin Blanc, at least, I think spending a little more, especially for a wine made by one of the Western Cape's many smaller and more specialized producers, is more likely to get you a wine that you'll enjoy and reflects the region's best winemaking efforts. As with most wines, the difference is grape selection, a key to making quality Chenin Blanc wine at any price and from any vineyard. Selecting grapes from Chenin Blanc vines grown in choice conditions is important, and grapes from certain older Chenin Blanc vines are especially prized and even noted on some wine labels. But regardless of vineyard age and growing conditions, essential for producing quality Chenin Blanc wines are careful vineyard management. Notably, that includes culling some of

the grape clusters so that the remaining clusters can ripen more fully and yield more intense flavors and acidity. Unchecked, Chenin Blanc grapevines can yield prodigious quantities of grapes that tend to be bland, lacking the flavors and other characteristics needed to make delicious wine. This less desirable fruit is mainly used for making brandy and cheap Chenin Blanc wines and blends that may be serviceable but characterless with dull, thin flavors. To get good value, my suggestion is to spend in the $12$30 range and seek out wines made by top producers. Here's a list in alphabetical order: Badenhorst Secateur, Bellingham, Cederberg, Delaire Graaf, de Morgenzon, Ernie Els (yes, "The Big Easy" himself, the famous South African golf tour pro), Finlayson, Ken Forestor, Indaba, L'avenir, Lievland, Miles Mossop, Mulderbosch, Mullineux (sweet Straw Wine), Neil Ellis, Raats Family, Reyneke, Simonsig, and Stellenbosch. You may find others.

Tasting Notes

The following are brief tasting notes of the wines we tried. Winemakers exposed most of these wines to some aging in oak or fermented them on sediments (lees) created early in the winemaking process, techniques that give these wines more body and character and creaminess and honey flavors. We found these wines most flavorful when served at about 50-55 degrees, or roughly 20-30 minutes after removing them from the fridge. Let us know what you think. 2018 Cederberg Chenin Blanc, 13% ABV ($14-$17): Lovely and easy-drinking. Intense lemon, melon, citrus and tropical fruit aromas. Crisp with red grapefruit, melon, creamy lemon tart flavors. Slight effervescence. 2018 Indaba Chenin Blanc, 13% ABV ($9-$13): Straightforward with textbook citrus, melon and tropical fruit flavors. Hardly the best but a bargain. 2017 Lievland Vineyards Old Vines Chenin Blanc ($13$17): Enticing and a bit mysterious. Perfume-like scents with tastes of pineapple, melon, lime, and red grapefruit. Some peach, too. Nice texture and crisp acidity. 2018 Miles Mossop The Introduction Chenin Blanc ($13-$16): One of our favorites. Crisp and zesty with floral and fruit aromas along with apple, pear, lime and cantaloupe flavors, some cream and nice mildly spicy finish. Delicious! 2019 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc/Steen Op Hout, 13% ($11-$16): Producer's basic version. Crisp and zesty with apple, lemon, pineapple and a bit of honey and cream. Quick but nice finish. Straightforward and enjoyable. 2017 Reyneke Winehugger White, 100% Chenin Blanc and Organic (13.5% ABV) ($14-$18): Bright, zesty acidity and lots of citrus, apple and pineapple with floral aromas. Fun. 2017 Reyneke Chenin Blanc, Biodynamic, 11.5% ($26$34): Expressive with refreshing acidity and taut, more subdued flavors, perhaps due to spending more months aging in oak. Peach, pear, citrus, and mineral freshness on a silky frame. Serious stuff. Y

DIVE STAR LIGHTHOUSE POINT’S KEVIN MENDEZ WINS RECORD-BREAKING STATE DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIFTH TIME.

OPPOSITE

Kevin Mendez in 2019 Joe Yerkovich for Point! Publishing

Swimmer and diver Kevin R. Mendez, Jr has been described as “...part kangaroo, part bird and part fish.” Whatever descriptions are used, one thing is clear; he is a skilled record breaker and history maker. At the 2020 Florida High School Athletic Associaton (FHSAA) 2A State Championships in Stuart, Florida, he set a new FHSAA Swimming and Diving State Championship record when he won his fifth consecutive 1-meter diving title. He now holds the record for the most repeat individual titles. It takes a combination of natural ability and dedication to reach such a level of excellence. Kevin, who started diving at 5-years-old, trains three

hours a day, five days a week. He also volunteers for Joshua’s Heart (joshuasheart.org). a youth-run non-for-profit committed to fighting hunger and poverty. Mendez has enviable, unmatched FHSAA accomplishments, but that is not the only place he excels. He won nearly a dozen USA Diving National Championship titles as part of Team USA as a junior diver. Despite all the awards he has won, he admits he stil gets a bit nervous when learning a new dive. One of his favorite memories is winning a state championship after taking a year off his sport. “It...(was).. the best thing to happen to me,” he said of returning to diving just two months before the high school season began. Mendez, Jr. was in seventh grade at Pine Crest School when he won his first title. Since then, he has not only set an FHSAA State Championship record, he broke a Pine Crest record held for 59 years in 100 meter fly and 44 years in 50 and 100 meter free for the most repeat individual titles.

TIME bottle [ in a \

Right now, all I want to do is forget 2020. Yet, going forward, I am sure someday I will want to remember these turbulent times. God willing, down the road, my grandchildren will ask me, “What was it like during the pandemic of 2020?” Naturally, I will remember the big stuff. But it’s the details of our day to day existence that will paint a fuller picture for the next generation. I wish I could ask my grandparents what it was like to live through the Spanish flu in New York. If we don’t study history, we are doomed to repeat it, and I think most of us are ready to leave 2020 in the rearview mirror. So, I started collecting stuff for a 2020 time capsule. Some items I had lying around the house. Other times, I ventured out, iPhone in hand, to take snapshots in my community. And to wrap it all up in a neat bow, I am including a letter to my future self.

What follows are snapshots in time — some literal, some figurative — of this past year. Images that can paint can picture of 2020 from the serious to the goofy and everything in between.
