After a devastating mistake sent Deerfield Beach’s first underwater art exhibit plummeting to the ocean floor, project organizers are working to resurrect the once-celebrated Rapa Nui dive site.

Named for the notorious American gangster, Capone Island is the uninhabited isle located across the Hillsboro Canal, just north of Sullivan Park and The Cove shopping center in Deerfield Beach.

BY SUSAN ROSSER

A Touch of Fall EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO, I REMEMBER the scene I am about to describe like it was yesterday. It was early September and my husband Richard and I were getting in the car to go out for lunch when he announced, “There’s a touch of fall in the air.” Quite frankly, my first reaction was that perhaps he was having some sort of psychotic break from reality and I should rush him to an emergency room. It was steaming hot, the sun was glaring down on us and you could have fried an egg on our driveway. “A touch of fall?” surely he must be mad. Like so many Floridians, I am a transplanted northerner and I love our tropical climate—except in September. Perhaps it’s my 30 years living in New York, but for some reason every September, I expect a different and cooler version of fall to arrive. After four months of oppressive Florida heat, of my hair looking like that stuff that grows on coconuts, of feeling like my makeup is literally melting off of my face—I am ready for a break. So there it is: I admit it. I miss autumn in New York. I miss that first day when you wake up and realize it’s a little too chilly for shorts and you might need a light sweater in the morning. I miss driving upstate to pick apples. I miss the beautiful ride back into the city on the New York State Thruway and arriving back home with enough apples for 37 pies and 12 quarts of apple sauce. I miss the bright colors of fall foliage and drinking coffee—not just for the caffeine buzz, but to actually warm up. My husband insists we have our own version of autumn and I should stop pining for the changing of the leaves. Up north, the transition from summer to fall is dramatic. The weather changes, the colors change, everyone seems to have a new sweater, and suddenly you find yourself with an urge to cook big pots of soup. In Florida the change is much more subtle, but if you look carefully, you can see it. As a native Floridian, Richard will point to the sky and tell me it’s more of a cerulean blue. And he detects even the slightest dip in the temperature and humidity. He even claims to notice changes in the barometric pressure. And while 20 years ago, I thought he was a little off his rocker, now I find myself a touch envious he is so in tune with his tropical surroundings. So perhaps I should give up my longing for warm apple cider, cardigans and boots. On some level, I may always miss the rich traditions that accompany fall in New York. But after so many years as a Floridian, it’s time to embrace autumn in the tropics and make my own Floridian traditions. So this September I will wait for the day when the sky turns a deeper shade of blue and I will bake a coconut cream pie. But I still might have to bake an apple pie too. After all, this is America.

Tuesday Night Beach Dances

If Footloose has taught us anything, it’s that dancing is one of the most fun and soul-freeing things we can do. Every Tuesday this month, come and let loose on the dance floor (well, the parking lot, to be more precise). The Tuesday Night Beach dances have been a local tradition since 1987. Total Recall will provide some big band sound to inspire your moves. Covers by Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other classics create sweet nostalgia. If you don’t want to dance, pop up a beach chair on the sand and listen as the sun sets. To Catch a Thief LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER HELPS LIGHTHOUSE POINT RESIDENT RETRIEVE STOLEN BOAT

BY MARIE PULEO When a 5 a.m. phone call abruptly awakened Carolyn Stash, owner of AtlasTrax USA, a Deerfield Beach-based business that provides GPS tracking services for boats, she sprung to action. Her customer, a Lighthouse Point resident who had taken his first trip to Bimini in the Bahamas in his brand new boat, informed her that his prized vessel—a custom-ordered 2017 Jupiter 38 valued at $450,000—had just been stolen. Stash immediately logged on to her computer and

began tracking the boat as three thieves took it a distance of 74 miles from Bimini to Freeport, at speeds of up to 52 mph. Through the concerted efforts of Stash, the boat owner, Bimini police and the Freeport Harbor Patrol, the boat was recovered at 6:40 a.m. as it entered a remote canal. “It was a wonderful success that we found it,” said Stash. “I think it’s pretty unheard of to catch a boat at the moment it’s entering a canal, before the thieves start taking the engines off and stripping the electronics and selling everything piecemeal. That’s normally what happens.” Unfortunately, when Freeport Harbor Patrol spotted the

22

Deerfield Beach!

boat as it approached the canal, the thieves throttled it up to high speed, jumped off and managed to escape. The boat ran into a concrete seawall, which caused damage to the hull. “It’s mostly cosmetic, just some bumps and scratches, and it’s all repairable,” said Phil Kniskern of KMC Marine in Lighthouse Point, where the boat was purchased. “Luckily, the engines and all the electronics are fine, and it’s seaworthy.” The boat was equipped with a Seatrax GPS tracker by AtlasTrax, a device which KMC Marine recommends to all its customers. Although KMC Marine can order other types of GPS tracking units if a customer requests them, the Seatrax is the only one they stock permanently because of its more simplified, battery-operated system, small size, relatively low cost and personalized service. The portable device is hidden in a spot on the boat known only to the owner. If the boat moves, the owner receives a text message with a map every 10 minutes, which is what alerted the owner his Jupiter 38 had been stolen less than 24 hours after he arrived in Bimini. “There’s no doubt we would not have found my boat without the AtlasTrax GPS tracking system on board,” said the boat owner, who wants to remain anonymous. “The customer support was outstanding.” Stash, who sells and distributes the tracking systems in the U.S., Bahamas and Caribbean, usually does tracking for customers who want her to make sure they, or their family members, arrive safely to their destination. This was her first case of tracking a theft. “I think it was a success story,” said Stash. “I hope we can help more people.”

beach bits Local Collector Sues Ferrari for Denying Him New Model Preston Henn, an 85-year-old Hillsboro Beach resident and internationally-known Ferrari collector for 60 years, is suing the luxury car company for denying him the ability to buy the new limitededition, special-series convertible, the LaFerrari supercar (dubbed the LaFarrari Spider by car enthusiasts). The “Spider” (which is not officially named by Ferrari yet) will make it’s debut in October at the Paris International Motor Show. Only 150 units of the supercar will be produced, each selling by invitation only for approximately $1.7 million. Ferrari reportedly rejected Henn’s attempt to place an order for the

supercar, saying Henn was “not qualified” to purchase the car, but stating no specific reason. Henn didn’t give up his pursuit. He responded by writing a letter to Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Fiat Chrysler and chairman and CEO of Ferrari N.V., to plead his case. Henn included a check for $1 million as a deposit on the new model, the lawsuit states. Enrico Galleria, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer, responded in writing that “all units have been sold.” Henn’s check was returned. After this attempt failed, Henn pursued legal action. He filed a lawsuit on July 29 in the southern

Florida U.S. District Court against Ferrari, claiming that by denying him the ability to purchase the car, Ferrari “injured Henn’s reputation in his profession, trade, occupation, and in the world of high-end automobile organizations, associations and exhibitions and their individual participants.” Henn is seeking $75,000 in damages, plus compensation for other costs and fees associated with the lawsuit. Henn currently boasts a collection of 15 Ferraris, worth an estimated $100 million, including the ultraexclusive Ferrari FXX and the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale, of which only three were built.

Kale Caesar

BY AMANDA JANE

IS ANYONE ELSE WONDERING how it’s September already? Just a few short days until Labor Day weekend. Newsflash: Summer is not over yet. Figs are in their prime season so take advantage! This kale Caesar salad with fig “croûtons” has become a fast favorite and is a great salad to bridge late summer and early fall. This recipe is a loose interpretation of the classic Caesar with its combination of kale, fresh Parmesan and pine nuts, mixed with a creamy, Greek-style yogurt dressing. And for you anchovy haters, this dressing is fish-free.

Kale Caesar Salad with Fig Croûtons Makes 2 servings

INGREDIENTS 1 bunch of flat-leaf kale, stems removed and cut into strips ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup pine nuts 2-3 figs, sliced in half or quartered

DIRECTIONS or food processor. Pulse to blend until mixture is fully combined. Set aside. Place the kale into a mixing bowl. Spoon the dressing onto the kale mixture and gently toss the salad

DRESSING ½ cup olive oil 2 garlic cloves ½ cup plain Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon ground pepper

until dressing coats the kale leaves. Arrange salad on a serving plate and top with Parmesan, pine nuts and fig slices. Serve and enjoy!

TIDBITS & TRIVIA

The Waiting Game

FLORIDA IS KNOWN, AFFECTIONATELY, AS “GOD’S WAITING room.” It earned that moniker because so many people move here to spend their retirement years. I won’t mind if God makes me wait a very long time before summoning me to heaven, or wherever it is that zany writers go when they pass on. So much for the “pros.” Other than that, I hate waiting. Doctors are the kings of making you wait, and we are the patients-in-waiting. They overbook and have unrealistic appointment schedules. This brings out the animals in us. We sit for hours in the office like sheep, then react like grateful puppies when we reach the first plateau: a call to enter an exam room and wait some more. The final insult is the assistant’s lie: “The doctor will be with you in a minute.” I have solved this problem. I make 15 appointments for the same day, 14 of them under fictitious names. When I arrive at the office I am the only one there. No matter which name they call, I go inside. The doctor has no choice but to see me. The down side is, the doctor now will triple his overbooking for the future. I have solved this problem, too. Show up early for your appointment wearing a dirty old raincoat with a dead mackerel in each pocket, mumbling something like “this flesh-eating virus will kill us all.” The waiting room will empty out in seconds. Remember to leave the raincoat in the waiting room when you go in to see the doctor, or he may leave as well.

Waiting in line at the supermarket is almost unavoidable, but sometimes this gambit works for me: When I get to the check-out, I ask the customers in line if I can go ahead of them because “my wife is waiting in the car for me to take her to the hospital for a liver transplant.” If you try this, be prepared for weird looks and nasty comments. When a supermarket has 10 check-out lanes but only one cashier, it is time to get even. I shop very late, load up my cart and roll up to the check-out two minutes before closing time. I then ask the clerk to price check every one of my 57 items. Some 20 minutes later, just as I am about to pay, I tell the clerk: “I think I left my car running,” bolt out of the store and never return. Then, I watch gleefully through the window as the staff returns all 57 products to the shelves. While I would not wait in line for five minutes (well, maybe five minutes) to see a bevy of bathing beauties in bikinis cavorting on the beach, (wow, what alliteration) there are people who seem to enjoy waiting. I refer to those who stand in queue for hours to score concert tickets or, worse yet, the lemmings who park on the sidewalk for days waiting to fork over $800 for the latest smart phone, even though their current phone is only three months old. Am I missing something? Now here is something really interesting: (Oops! Out of space. Sorry, you’ll have to wait ‘till next month.)

Balancing Acts Managing everyday stress BY DR. JILL SELBACH

NOW THAT THE SCHOOL YEAR has begun and summer is over, the challenge to keep balance is on. We are back in the act of managing schedules and wearing too many hats. It is not an easy feat to achieve a good work/life balance. The stressors of work, managing a home, juggling children, caring for aging parents and finding time to spend doing enjoyable things can feel overwhelming.

What is stress?

Stress can come from change and having too many demands and desires. We also create stress when we have high expectations of ourselves and others. There are external and internal stressors:

External • • • • •

Work demands Community involvement Educational conflicts Family and household responsibilities Unforeseeable events

Internal

• Unrealistically high expectations for our personal performance • The need to do more and have more • Ineffective behaviors • Poor health habits • Negative thoughts, attitudes and feelings

What does stress look like? • • • • • • • •

It affects our thinking: Thoughts become unclear Poor concentration Poor attention span Issues with memory Compromised judgment Frequent worry Racing thoughts

It affects our emotions: • Feeling overwhelmed

Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing). Sleeping too much or too little Eating more or less Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax Isolating yourself from others Neglecting responsibilities or procrastinating Many of these signs and symptoms are also indicative of other medical or psychological issues. It is important to check with your physician to determine if they are stressrelated.

MORE THAN WAKEBOARDING & WATERSKIING!!!

Don’t come home and kick the dog

We need to keep our homes as our place of tranquility and safety. It is important to leave stressors at the door. It is human nature to displace our stress and frustration onto the individuals closest to us. We become angry with our boss and come home and kick the dog (it’s a metaphor). Kids come home from school with piles of homework or upset about a bad day. Our kids, parents and other family members should not be the target of our displaced stress. We need to look at these people as a source of support.

C A N T A N K E R O U S LY Y O U R S

To all the grandchildren in the world DEAR GRANDCHILDREN EVERYWHERE, Today, I am writing to apologize to all of you. Usually, I try to be upbeat. But fifteen years ago, terrorists killed thousands of Americans by flying airplanes into buildings. And this month, memorials and other reminders of that horrendous day make it impossible to write anything funny. Instead, today, I want to apologize to everyone in your generation from everyone in mine. My generation inherited one world war, and lived through another. Millions of people were killed. We should have learned something from those terrible wars. We should have made the world a better place for you. We didn’t. And we didn’t. More than 150 years ago, a man by the name of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said, “What we learn from history ... is that we never learn from history.” My generation, like all of those that preceded it, confirms the truth of that statement. We never learned the one thing that every human being on earth has in common: none of us asked to be here. We had no say in the matter at all. But I believe that once given the gift of life, no one should have the right to take it away. Yet human beings kill other human beings every day. Every hour. Every place on earth. In wars, we kill each other by the millions, usually in the name of some –ism, -ology, or –ocracy. One reason we keep warring is because of another lesson no generation has ever learned about its leaders: how to tell The Good Guys from The Bad Guys. That is just as dumb as it sounds. But it keeps happening. Every century. And it happens because we never understand how badly we want to believe in our leaders: our presidents, prime ministers, priests and rabbis. We want them to be smart, fair, honest and always right. We forget that our leaders are simply human beings, capable of making mistakes and being wrong. And because we want so badly to believe in what they tell us, we seemingly do anything they ask. Too often, our leaders convince us our -ism is the only true and righteous one, rendering us easily manipulated ... and exploited. We become wary of others. Cautious. Suspicious. Too often, our judgment of “those others” leads to mistrust and outright hatred. Hatred: a much underrated emotion. It’s what our leaders use to

34

Deerfield Beach!

BY WENDELL ABERN

galvanize us in a common cause. Ergo, wars. Millions of Americans protested our country’s involvement in Vietnam because we didn’t understand who hated us. Conversely, if President Carter had declared war after Iranian zealots kidnapped 52 Americans, we would have responded with fervent jingoism. One thing the human race has learned — but sadly, ignored — is that history is written by the winners. So how can we ever be sure the good guys won and the bad guys lost? Many centuries ago, a man named Alexander led an army that conquered other countries. Some history books still refer to him as Alexander The Great. It is unlikely he was called “great” by the thousands of widows and orphans his marauding armies left in their wake. If Germany had won World War II, the madman Adolph Hitler – arguably the most evil human being who ever lived – would be portrayed in today’s history books as a dynamic, charismatic leader. Some 10,000 years ago, the human race discovered agriculture, creating a gigantic sea change in our evolution. We no longer had

to hunt for food. We could grow our own. We settled down. We grew into little communities. We created villages. And towns. And cities. And boundaries. We have been at war ever since. Personally, my strongest belief is that nothing is as sacred or as beautiful as a human life. Any human life. I doubt many leaders would agree with that. At some point in the history of our civilization, our leaders determined that our beliefs were more important than our lives. That has never changed. About seven thousand years ago, there were almost 27 million of us listening to a few leaders, telling us to go kill each other in the name of some -isms. About five hundred years ago, there were now 450 million of us, still listening to a few leaders, still telling us to go kill each other in the name of some new -isms. Today, there are almost seven billion of us, still listening to a few leaders, still telling us to go kill each other, still in the name of some –isms. When does it stop? When do we stop using our beliefs as license to kill each other? Today, more than 60 years after the unspeakable atrocity known as The Holocaust, after a weary world swore, “Never again,” after a United Nations was created to bring peace to the whole planet, genocides continue to flourish. Ethnic cleansing occurs every decade or so. As I write this, the slaughter of innocent people continues in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia, all in the name of some –isms. Leaders of these slaughters, of course, invoke hatred as a motivator. And why not? It always works. Some have tried to unite people by other means. For a while, Mahatma Gandhi brought people together with love instead of hatred. So did Martin Luther King Jr. So have a precious few others. Unfortunately, too many leaders have discovered that hatred works better. And finally, here is a lesson we all should have learned in kindergarten: there is only one planet that supports life. This is where we all have to live. We should be taking care of this planet. And I must admit, your generation is doing a much better job of it than mine did. Or any generation, for that matter. I hope you can start to turn other things around also. Most of all, I hope you can start ... to stop ... the killing. It will take many, many future generations to overcome cycles of hatreds generating hatreds; of killings spawning revenge; of broken alliances, shattered truces and unconscionable genocides. The end of these mass murders has to start sometime. I hope it starts with you. I hope you can make the world a tiny bit better. And a little bit cleaner. And much safer. I hope when you are my age, you never have to write a letter of apology to all the grandchildren in the world. Sincerely, Wendell Abern Wendell Abern can be reached at dendyabern@gmail.com.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

A Little Appreciation

CHARLIE PLUMB WAS A U.S. NAVY JET PILOT IN VIETNAM. He had flown 74 consecutive successful combat missions, but during his 75th mission, his F4 phantom fighter plane was shot down by surface-to-air missiles. The plane exploded with 12,000 pounds of jet fuel, flipping the plane end-over-end. The plane was heading for a rice field and Charlie knew he had to eject. The only thing that would save him from imminent death was his parachute, which he prayed would open. Charlie ejected and his parachute opened, however the enemy was still shooting at him as he drifted to the ground. He descended for 90 seconds. Once he hit the ground he was captured. Charlie spent 2,103 days in a communist, Vietnamese prison camp before he was set free. Years later, Charlie, his wife and another couple were having dinner in a restaurant in Kansas City when a man kept staring over at Charlie. Finally the man walked over to Charlie and said, “You are Captain Charlie Plumb! You were a Top Gun fighter pilot years ago!” The man continued and said, “Your plane was shot down, and you were held as a prisoner of war for six years.” Charlie was speechless. He did not recognize the man and

36

had no idea how he knew all the information he did. Charlie finally asked how the man knew him. The man looked at him and said, “Because I packed your parachute.” Charlie was in shock. Then the man said, “I guess it worked,” before walking off. That night Charlie laid awake thinking about all the times he walked through the lower levels of the ship where the sailors packed the parachutes. Charlie never acknowledged the man or said hello, good morning, good job, or I appreciate you. Yet the work that man did later saved his life. Think about this for yourself. How many people in your life contribute to your success? How many people make your life easier, better and more fulfilled? What people have made the most impact on your life that you should show gratitude and appreciation for? Now is the time! Focus now on saying thank you to those people. Never take them for granted, because if it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t be where you are today. Then ask yourself, “How good am I at packing parachutes? How can I be more valuable and help the people in my life more?” When you start asking questions like these, you will come up with some great answers, which will help you impact the people around you and thus, the world. Deerfield Beach!

RAPA NUI After a devastating mistake sent Deerfield Beach’s first underwater art exhibit and artificial reef tumbling upside down and crashing onto the sea floor, Rapa Nui organizers mourned. Now, the “Mojectic Moai” may make a comeback. Project benefactor Margaret Blume and Rapa Nui artist Dennis MacDonald have been working with a team of community members, including Arilton Pavan of Dixie Divers and the Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department, to resurrect the once-celebrated exhibit.

The cheers turned to anguish in a matter of minutes on that festive Sunday, June 7, 2015. The sinking of the Rapa Nui artificial reef, composed of 15 Moai on a 150-by-45-foot barge, flipped upside down, crushing $500,000 worth of concrete figures. This was to be the area’s first underwater, public art diving destination. One spectator gasped as the barge sunk. “The whole thing is going down … upside down,” they said in shock. The project’s primary benefactor, Margaret Blume, described it as “devastating.” Rapa Nui Artist Dennis MacDonald was left speechless, and organizer Arilton Pavan, owner of Dixie Divers, was left to explain how it all happened. The proposed sinking had captivated the community in the months preceding the sinking. The project was organized through the Deerfield Beach Woman’s Club, who became “ambassadors” for the project and raised money for

the public art. There were festivities held at Two Georges at the Cove Restaurant, giving the community the opportunity to see, up close, the “Majestic Moai” of the Rapa Nui Reef. Additional money was raised for public art by the Chamber of Commerce on the Saturday night before the sinking. This “ripple effect” of community involvement was exactly what Blume had been seeking when she invested in the Rapa Nui artificial reef project. Adding substance to the community is why philanthropists like Blume donate time and money, but they also hope to inspire additional investments to compound and sustain their initial venture. For Blume, Rapa Nui was a way to showcase her two passions: public art and helping the environment. She wanted to make a big splash, and the 15 Moai seemed a fantastic and interesting way to do it — a one-of-a kind public art initiative. But when the Rapa Nui reef devastatingly flipped upside down and sunk, it took Blume and the community’s sense of pride and accomplishment with it. Gradually, as with any death, things returned to normal. MacDonald recovered fine. He was commissioned to create another underwater art exhibit in Pompano Beach — an aquatic gambling scene built aboard Lady Luck, a retired New York sludge boat Pompano Beach purchased with Isle Casino to sink as an artificial reef. It was Dennis’ inspiring work on Rapa Nui Reef that paved the way for

Even with a “slow sinking” method engineered to limit any mishaps, he watched anxiously as Lady Luck tilted just before it breached the ocean surface. “I thought, here we go again,” MacDonald said. But Lady Luck sunk successfully to a collective sigh of relief. The ship landed upright in 130-feet of water located off the Pompano Beach Fishing pier with MacDonald’s casino art scene fully intact. The fun, gambling-themed scene included “card sharks,” an octopus craps dealer and some giant dice. It took a few months for Arilton Pavan of Deerfield Beachbased Dixie Divers to reorganize and assess the devastation of Rapa Nui reef. Not one to take “no” for an answer, he was motivated to reclaim the site. Pavan came to America from Brazil with his wife Sonia 27 years ago with $300 in his pocket; he knows the meaning of hard work, success and more importantly, failure. The recovery work on Rapa Nui has been slow, but progress has been made. With Pavan

DENNIS MACDONALD leading a group of volunteer divers on Saturday afternoons, three of the Moai have been pulled from under the barge. Using a combination of debris removal by hand, an underwater come-a-long and lift bags, the Moai have been relocated, one-by-one, on top of the upside-down barge. Using brackets, the Moai have been up-righted. Having Pavan spend his time and energy to improve the site has given Blume hope and validated the importance of the Rapa Nui project. It’s “still very painful” to even think about what happened last year, but Blume is encouraged that the project can live again. In addition to Pavan, Dr. Ken Banks and his team at the Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department have been working to resurrect Rapa Nui. The team added 250 tons of limestone boulders to the site last year. Named “Mount Deerfield,” the cost of these boulders was covered by a grant from the Florida Wildlife Commission to create a great habitat for marine life. Blume said she has discussed adding more Moai to the barge with MacDonald. It’s now a matter of logistics to

Yet Banks says it still needs something more. By the end of summer, Banks hopes there will be additional limestone boulders added to the site. Still, it is presently merely an upside down, rusted work barge with a pile of cement debris and pieces of rebar underneath. While the placement of the three Moai erected on top of the barge has made it look a little better, it’s still not the “Majestic Moai.” So in addition to adding a few more Moai, MacDonald and Blume recognize the need to re-create the art component. This is the missing ingredient now. “We don’t want to leave it the way it is now,” said Blume. The project needs “composition and connectivity.” MacDonald and Blume plan to keep pushing until the vision is complete. “Even though our hearts were broken, we never gave up,” said Blume. “We’re not quitters, so we’re hopeful the project will have new life.”

place them, one-at-a-time, on the site. MacDonald still has the molds from when he created the original project, so making additional Moai is just a matter of concrete and rebar. The challenging part is getting them safely to the ocean floor in 65-feet of water. Considering the site was nothing but sand just a little over a year ago, Deerfield Beach is proud to have Rapa Nui in the works. Located about 1,500 feet directly east of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing pier, it lies between the second and third reef. This reef track is the largest in the continental United States and third largest in the world. Extending from west of the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico, the 400 linear miles of reef extends as far north as the St. Lucia Inlet in Martin County. Presently, the Rapa Nui Reef is filled with a large amount of sea life. A goliath grouper has taken up residence under the barge and a colony of tiny spiny lobster are calling “Mount Deerfield” home. There are even a few loggerhead turtles competing for space with a variety of snapper, grunts and tarpon. There is no doubt the sinking of Rapa Nui has at least created a new habitat. This will pay tremendous dividends in the future for the marine environment. And the site is in a prime location, easily accessible by boat, situated between the Boca Raton and Hillsboro Inlet. Because it’s lying in 65 feet of water, it’s a dive that any open water certified diver can visit. With the top of the barge and “Mount Deerfield” in 50 feet of water, skilled free divers can also enjoy the plunge.

Big Problem, Simple Fix Bruxism, or “teeth grinding”, can affect anyone! Although there are many possible reasons why a person grinds their teeth, around 70% of grinding is caused by stress. Simply stated, you grind your teeth you wear them down or reduce them to nubs. One morning you wake up and your jaw is hurting or one or more teeth are sensitive even before you begin eating or perhaps your mouth is making a whole lot of new sounds without you even humming a song. The situation does not have to get to this point. Have your dentist make a customized hard night guard that is designed for your teeth and mouth and wear it every night or even during the day if you catch yourself grinding. It’s your choice but wearing a night guard is a lot less expensive then replacing a mouthful of worn down teeth. All the best!

CAPONE ISLAND IS DEERFIELD ISLAND PARK

BY SALLY J. LING When Chicago gangster Al Capone gave his Miami attorney, Vincent Giblin, criteria for purchasing property on which the gangland boss would build a large house, he did not request a mangrove swamp, colony of gopher tortoises or migratory bird stopover. What attracted Capone’s legal representative to the triangular tract of vacant land in northern Broward County was its remote location. Today, most locals have heard of Capone Island, the uninhabited isle located across the Hillsboro Canal, just north of Sullivan Park and The Cove shopping center in Deerfield Beach. But if you ask these same folks if they know of Deerfield Island Park, most will likely answer, “Huh?” Fact is, they are one and the same. Deerfield Island Park came into existence in 1980 when the county designated Capone’s land as a passive recreation area. To fully understand the

aura, history and mystique surrounding the island, one must go back to the Prohibition era when Chicago gangster Al Capone settled in South Florida and called it home. It is there the story begins. Al Capone, America’s most notorious gangster of the Prohibition era, setup headquarters in the penthouse suite of the Ponce de Leon Hotel in Miami in 1927. From there, he ran his Chicago Outfit. A year later, he became a Florida resident when he bought a home on Palm Island in Miami Beach. With the long cold winters of Chicago, constant harassment by the law, infighting amongst various gangs, frequent liquor hijackings and several attempts on his life, it’s no wonder Capone sought the warmth and respite of South Florida. Having passed through the area several years earlier on his way to and from Cuba and the Bahamas on gambling junkets and liquor purchases, he found southern Florida ripe for investment and brimming with promise as a haven from his

gangland difficulties. Officials in Chicago were glad to be rid of him. Though he was reportedly a model citizen while in the Miami area, county and city law enforcement agencies, city officials and prominent citizens wanted him ousted from their community. Capone was arrested several times on multiple charges including having liquor in his home, being a nuisance, vagrancy and perjury. Each time, however, he beat the rap using the savvy services of Giblin and Miami-based attorney James Frances “Fritz” Gordon. In June of 1930, word was out that Giblin, on behalf of Capone, was looking for property out of the public eye, both in northern Broward County and around Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County. The Everglades News, a publication of the town of Canal Point on the east bank of Lake Okeechobee, attributed this knowledge to W.G. “Guy” Stovall, a well-known contractor in Pahokee, Florida. Stovall, who claimed he had presented an offer to Capone for a

block of land fronting the lake, said that Capone and others wanted the land for a hunting and fishing preserve. While it is unknown whether this transaction was ever consummated, another well documented transaction took place in Deerfield. Giblin, whose name is indicated as “trustee” on the June 30, 1930 deed, purchased a 50.2-acre tract of land, not yet an island, in northern Broward County abutting Palm Beach County. The land, a half mile from the closest road, was inaccessible by car. Two days later, the headline “Capone Seeks Foothold in Broward” splashed across the front page of the Fort Lauderdale Daily News. The article announced: “What is believed to be a move on the part of Al Capone, Chicago beer and brothel baron, to establish residence and headquarters in Broward county was seen today with the filing of a deed at the Broward courthouse for transfer of a large tract of land lying between the Florida East Coast and Hillsborough canals at Deerfield.” When Giblin was asked about whether he had bought the property for his client, he

smugly replied, “When I find out, I’ll let you know.” Confirmation of the land transfer to Vincent C. Giblin, trustee, was given a day later in the Palm Beach Post by E.B. Davis, the previous title holder. The article clearly associated Giblin, described as a former Broward judge and Capone’s chief legal counsel, with the gangster who they called a “notorious Chicago racketeer.” The inference on who had actually purchased the land was unmistakable. Capone’s purchase of land in Broward County was music to the ears of Dade County officials. Hopes also ran high among Miami Beach citizens that the gangster would indeed move from their community to take up residency in the county north of Miami. About this time, W.D. McDougald, Deerfield Police Chief and a Sheriff’s deputy, received a call from Broward County

Margaret McDougald Shadoin, a longtime Deerfield Beach resident and daughter of the chief, recalled: “My dad was told Capone had purchased land on the peninsula, sight unseen, and was coming up to look at it. He wanted my dad and Deputy Alvin Stewart to escort the mobster and offer him protection because Capone was the target for an assassination at all times. Dad said Capone was a very mannerly person who told him he was planning to build a nightclub and casino on the island. As soon as word got out about the land

deal, speculation ran rampant about how the property would be used. An article in the Palm Beach Post confirmed some of that conjecture when it reported that work on clearing the land would begin immediately. Capone’s new Florida residence, at a cost of more than $375,000, would be built on the triangular-shaped land mass. Architectural plans and house construction would take up $250,000 of that figure. The remaining $125,000 in construction fees would include a 75-by-125-foot swimming pool, according to Stovall. It is unclear why construction on the property never took place. Some accounts

place the blame on inaccessibility of the land and that Boca Raton’s town council may have thwarted efforts to facilitate that access. Broward County attorney and author William G. Crawford, who wrote several articles about Capone Island and Giblin, disputes this with substantial documentation that access to the land had already been approved. Given Capone’s ongoing legal battles in Chicago, and the fact that in October 1931 he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for income tax evasion and failure to file income taxes, Crawford concluded the construction was never completed for financial reasons, not legal ones, With Capone in prison, “Giblin would have no reason to retain title of the property for Capone’s benefit,” Crawford noted. Unpaid taxes began to accumulate on the property and, in 1934, Giblin quitclaimed the deed back to Davis. The land was subsequently purchased by Florida Inland Navigational District (FIND) from the town of Deerfield at a tax foreclosure sale. As the property sat, urban legends flourished. David Eller, who grew up in Deerfield Beach and is a third generation resident, heard rumors that Capone had hidden a lot of money on the island. As a teen, he spent many hours with friends swimming over to the island to dig holes and look for Capone’s hidden treasure. “The only things we actually got were blisters and sandspurs,” Eller said. Yet digging for Al Capone’s buried treasure may not be so far-fetched. According to Deirdre Capone, Al Capone’s niece, Capone had stashed almost $100 million dollars under assumed names in safety deposit boxes in different banks in the U.S. and Cuba before he went to prison. Keys to each box were tagged, then placed in a strong box and buried. After Capone’s release from Alcatraz in 1939, he went back to the place where he thought he had buried the box. He couldn’t find it. He continued searching, but the strong box never materialized. Capone’s brother, Ralph, commandeered several men from the Outfit to help him dig up the yards at Al’s homes on Prairie Avenue in Chicago and Palm Island in Miami Beach. Still, nothing. In desperation, Ralph had Al hypnotized. That, too, was to no avail. The box containing Capone’s keys still

remains buried out there, somewhere. Today, Deerfield Island Park (aka Capone Island), is still remote, but a bit larger. Shortly after Capone Island was purchased by FIND, spoil from dredging the Florida East Coast Canal, now the Intracoastal Waterway, enlarged the island to its current size of 53.3 acres. In 1961, a canal was dredged on the north side of the property between Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, and the Deerfield property, which formed the island. FIND conveyed the property to the state in 1965 on a 99-year-right to use it as a park and recreation area. In 1980, it opened as Deerfield Island Park, a passive recreation area and nature study area accessible only by boat. It was designated as an Urban Wilderness Area in 1982, and, in 1983, as an official Gopher Tortoise refuge. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission renewed the park’s designation as a gopher tortoise refuge in 2012. In March 2015, they re-certified the island as a Critical Wildlife Area, a designation crucial for the continued protection of the gopher tortoise population. 15 county parks — manages the Deerfield Island Park, including staff, shuttle service and maintenance. Hendrickson also serves as a liaison to Friends of Deerfield Island Park, a club of outdoor enthusiasts who help maintain the park. Hendrickson said traveling to the island is the ultimate getaway for nature lovers. “Deerfield Island is a passive recreational park detached from the mainland,” she said. “Species here don’t have the same interaction as those in a mainland park. It’s like old Florida when you walk inside the canopy. There’s nothing like it. It sends you back in time,” Some of the animals you may see in, and around, the island are: great horned owls, herons, osprey, iguanas, snakes, raccoons, red foxes, armadillos, manatees, warblers, woodpeckers and gopher tortoises. According to Hendrickson, the colony of 20 to 40 gopher tortoises is the last remaining golfer tortoise habitat in the Southeastern United States. This article contains excerpts from Sally J. Ling’s book “Al Capone’s Miami: Paradise or Purgatory.” Sally is an author, historian and speaker, and member of the Deerfield Beach Historical Society.

Friends of Deerfield Island Park Friends of Deerfield Island Park (FODIP), a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, formed in 2015 to assist the county in building awareness and enthusiasm for the park as well as raising funds for programming and projects. Headed by Ira Wechterman, president, the group started with just six members. Today they have over 100 committed members from Boynton Beach to Pompano Beach. “I realized there was no one coming forward in defense of the island, no one to speak up for it except the parks department. It’s not just a barren island; it has lots of potential and is valuable to the entire community. It needed a voice,” said Wechterman, a retired dentist. Two of the first projects competed by FODIP was a PowerPoint presentation produced by David Locke, vice president, and a brochure designed by Helene Wechterman. These visuals were created to inform communities and organizations about the park. Other projects followed—a website, kayak/paddleboard storage rack for rentals (Loews donated the materials), butterfly garden, island cleanup, harvesting mangrove propagules for replanting and a presence at Deerfield’s Farmer’s Market (held on specified Sundays at Pioneer Park and sponsored by the Deerfield Beach Historical Society). More projects are in the works. For more information or to get involved, visit the FODIP website at: friendsofdip.org Watch for Capone Day coming in early 2017!

This busy spot in Deerfield Beach offers consistently great Cuban food for great prices. On any given night, expect to wait for a table, which is always a good sign. This is when the mojitos come in handy. They offer the classic lime and mint mojito, plus several other flavors. We usually stick to the classics when it comes to cocktails, but were pleasantly surprised by the pineapple. It was not too sweet, which is often the case when bartenders get creative. You’ll find all of your favorite Cuban classics from the ubiquitous Cuban sandwich, to more inventive dishes such as Shrimp Havana. We started with a few appetizers. The beef empanada had a tender, flaky dough wrapped around seasoned ground beef packed with flavor. The potato balls are perfectly-shaped, small spheres of soft and creamy potatoes with a little surprise of ground ham in the center. We also tried the ham croquettes, which were super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. All of these fried treats arrived at our table piping hot, which is critical when indulging in fried food. All of the entrées we ordered were served with rice, beans and fried plantains. Let’s start with the plantains—seriously, we could make a meal out of these. Perhaps they have some sort of “ripe-ometer” back in the kitchen, letting the cooks know when to serve the plantains. They were sweet and soft and the perfect accompaniment to every bite. The little Havana steak is tender and juicy, packed full of flavor. It is served with a chimichurri sauce that is spectacular and adds the perfect bit of zesty tang to each bite. When we packed up our leftovers, we made sure to get a small container of that divine condiment. We also ordered the pork churrasco—because we have been to Little Havana several times and we knew the pork was also served with the heavenly sauce. For a change of pace, we also tried the shrimp Havana, which is decadent but worth the splurge. The shrimp are bathed in s creamy lobster sauce perfect for slathering over the rice. If you’re looking for a great Cuban sandwich, theirs is as good as it gets and a great lunch option. Speaking of lunch, they offer great lunch specials starting at just $5.99—can’t beat that.

AMERICAN Nestled in at the Lighthouse Point Marina, the Nauti Dawg is a local favorite. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, seaweed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sriracha. For a taste of New England, the lobster roll can’t be beat— a generous portion of lobster with just the right amount of mayonnaise. Of course you can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what the catch of the day is. The fish Reuben is another great sandwich option—just sub in some fresh fish for the pastrami and you’ve got yourself a little healthier version of the classic. All sandwiches come with a side and while French fries are always a delicious option—the restaurant offers a tangy cucumber salad (among other choices) that provides a nice crunch to any sandwich. They are a dog friendly restaurant. 2830 N.E. 29 Ave., 954-941-0246 $$

does indeed seem like the hip child of an established restaurant. While the fresh food is the real star, the Keyes inspired décor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The restaurant serves a selection of clams and oysters on the half shell. There are also a few options for cooked oysters including the black and blue version topped with blue cheese and bacon. The menu also goes way beyond the typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. Papa’s also offers a wide array of sushi and sashimi. Start off with one of the towers of Van Buskirk (you’ll find a few menu items named after locals.) The bare naked lady version is a combination of spicy wahoo and tuna with tobiko and masago topped with spicy mayo and served with taro chips. They serve all your classic sushi rolls but the superstars are their specialty rolls. There are plenty of land lubber options including burgers and hibatchi offerings. And to wash it all down, they have about a zillion craft beer options and a wine list too. The Bimini Room which is adjacent to the main restaurant is available for private parties and boasts a Hemingway inspired mural—another respectful nod to the Keys. 4610 N. Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN Sprechen sie Deutsch? You

don’t find too many authentic German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel—it’s devine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet (or pork) sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The entrées are served with your choice of two side dishes. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them anxd they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As we looked around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers—which of course is a great sign. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

review

There are two kinds of people in the world: people who worship at the alter of blue cheese, and those who don’t care for the cultured treat. To the first group: we would advise you to have dinner at Gianni’s. Each dinner is served with a plentiful basket of garlic rolls and a house salad, which is a romaine heart wedge served with a tangy balsamic vinaigrette, topped with a generous portion of blue cheese. For the latter group: Gianni’s will gladly hold the blue cheese or serve it on the side. Entering Gianni’s is like stepping into a Martin Scorsese film. The place is old school. You won’t find any hipster appetizers or trendy entreés. In fact, if you’re tired of a world filled with kale, then Gianni’s is the perfect antidote. The menu is full of everyone’s favorite mainstream Italian meals, from traditional eggplant rollatini, to their popular Osso Buco. The last time we were there we tried two of their specials for the evening (after devouring our salads and garlic rolls). The first was a piece of Florida grouper served in a fresh and chunky tomato sauce with clams and mussels, too. The other can best be described as a chicken asteroid— boneless chicken breast pounded thin, then rolled around spinach, zucchini and cheese. The chicken’s perfectly-round sphere was almost as impressive as the taste. Naturally the entreés are served with a side of spaghetti. The portions are generous and they are happy to wrap up your leftovers. The staff are notably professional, courteous and attentive, which makes the whole experience that much more fun. Mangiere!

Now is the perfect time to stop by and clean that dirty car at Mr. Squeaky’s award winning car wash!

Everyone loves Mr. Squeaky Car Wash, including Cassie and Troy Ganter- Owners, Papa’s Raw Bar, Lighthouse Point (papasrawbar.com)

MR. SQUEAKY CAR WASH is owned and operated for the past 10

years by a Lighthouse Point family. Owners Richard and Lynn Sasso, both attorneys, left the day to day practice of law to launch Mr. Squeaky, with the goal of making Mr. Squeaky one of the best car washes in the nation. Mr. Squeaky has been voted “1 of the Top 50 Car Washes in the USA” by Modern Car Care Magazine, the only South Florida car wash to receive this honor. From top to bottom, Mr. Squeaky is a family business. Their two children, Stella and Tyler, along with thousands of other kids visiting with their parents, love the multi-sensory experience of the 135’ long car wash tunnel that includes colorful soaps, a high pressure Arctic Blast rinse, soft cloth scrubs and Tornado Dryers. With washes starting at just $9, including unlimited FREE use of vacuums, there is no true competitor in all of South Florida. From Buicks to Bentleys, every car is treated with white glove service that has made Mr. Squeaky famous and the go-to place for hundreds of thousands of raving fans. Lynn Sasso explains the philosophy at Mr. Squeaky: “We wanted to create a family-friendly car wash. Our goal is to give each customer a squeaky clean car and a smile on their face!”

Developed, owned and operated by the Sasso family.
