Creatively Speaking Our Precious Stories

22 pointpubs.com • POINT! PUBLISHING

This time of year, as summer winds down and the High Holy Days approach, I find myself missing my mother and Debbie more than usual.  Every year before Rosh HaShanah, as is tradition, Debbie called me to ask forgiveness for anything she had done during the year to upset me. Of course, I forgave her and asked the same. Oh, how I miss those phone calls. Yet, I was looking for a way to honor and remember my mother and sister beyond cooking my mother’s legendary stuffed cabbage or my sister’s favorite challah recipe. So I sat down with “My Antonia.”

BY SUSAN ROSSER

Decades later, after my mother passed away, my oldest sister Debbie read “My Antonia.” She knew it had been one of our mother’s favorites, and I think she read it as a way to honor her. I remember Debbie calling me and going on and on about how she loved it. “It’s just so good,” she repeated over and over. And then, only a few years after my mother passed away, my sister Debbie died unexpectedly.

The novel is narrated by an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, who recounts his time living with his grandparents in Nebraska. Much of the book focuses on his friendship with Antonia Shimerda, the elder daughter of a family of Bohemian immigrants who live nearby. When it came time to write an essay about “My Antonia,” my mother was of great help. I remember sitting with her at our dining room table as she encouraged me to relate the story to my life. I thought she was crazy. The Great Plains of Nebraska seemed about as alien to me, a teenager living in Manhattan, as possible. But after having my own private book club session with my mom, we managed to do just that. It was September, and my family had just celebrated the Jewish High Holy Days. For the observant, driving is strictly forbidden on the High Holy Days. Yet there I was, in one of the most vibrant and modern cities in the world, walking home from synagogue, just as my forefathers had done a century ago in Europe.

As I read the last sentence, I wept as if these two extraordinary women — whom I loved with every single atom in my body — were right beside me, sending me this message, “Whatever we had missed, we possessed together the precious, the incommunicable past.”

For the record, my family is about as far from the pioneer life as you can imagine. We are New Yorkers, through and through. Yet, rereading Willa Cather’s American classic “My Antonia” gave me such an opportunity.   I first read “My Antonia” as part of my tenth-grade summer reading assignments. My mother, an avid reader, reread the book that summer because it was one of her favorites.

How could a novel about pioneers living in Nebraska towards the end of the nineteenth century connect me to my mother and older sister, who had both passed away within the last few years?

EXCEPTIONAL TRAINING Although dentists need additional training to administer Botox injections, they already have a wealth of theoretical knowledge in the facial area. So, they can make patients more comfortable during the treatment.

On the other hand, independent agents represent many companies and can often better assist you in finding a plan that fits your particular needs.

Dr. Nelly is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The ANOC shows changes that will occur in the plans beginning on January 1 of the upcomingChangesyear.may include: • monthly premiums • doctors or hospitals added or removed from the plan’s network • copays or coinsurance amounts • increased or decreased dental, vision, or hearing benefits • the pharmacy network • prescription drugs added or removed from coverage • cost of covered drugs (tiers) and plan deductible • any other plan changes.

You should be on the lookout for your annual notice of change and review it carefully. The notices may be sent by regular mail or by email. Always check your email spam or junk folders when awaiting these crucial emails. If you determine that your plan will still meet your needs, you can simply let it roll over to the following year. But, if you are unhappy with the upcoming changes, you should reach out to an independent agent to learn about the variety of other plans available in your area. Insurance companies and their “captive” agents can only tell you about “their” plans.

The Benefits of Receiving Botox and Fillers From Your Dentist

MEDICARE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (AEP)

COMPLICATIONS Although complications from Botox and fillers are relatively rare, they do happen. Problems can arise if you use an unregulated professional without required training. If issues occur, the practitioner will not be equipped to deal with the complications. Dentists are trained to monitor the procedure’s medical and aesthetic elements.

During their training, dentists acquire in-depth knowledge of the facial anatomy. Furthermore, a dentist can provide holistic diagnosis and advice to patients on issues that concern the face. Moreover, a dentist is very familiar addressing complications that arise in the facial area. Dentists carry out more invasive procedures in the facial area than any other healthcare specialist.

Whether you are a regular Botox user or new to fillers and Botox, it can be confusing who to choose for your treatment. Your dentist is perhaps someone that wouldn’t immediately spring to mind, but of all the professionals who specialize in these treatments, they are often a great choice. But why?

BY DR. NELLY PEREZ

WHY CHOOSE A DENTIST FOR YOUR BOTOX OR LIP FILLER TREATMENT?

Some dentists may have experience using Botox in their dentistry work, such as when treating patients with dentures, orthodontic cases or patients with high lip lines. No other healthcare provider can help patients in the way a dentist can. Dentists are very accurate when it comes to injecting as they regularly inject the gums during dental procedures — ensuring a relatively painfree and quick injection. Dentists are now much more than a place to go for dental treatment; they are becoming recognized as a place where they can provide a one-stop shop for Botox, fillers and dental treatment.

The Medicare AEP occurs every year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. This is when members of Medicare Advantage Plans or Stand-Alone Part D Prescription Drug Plans must decide whether to stay on their current plan or switch to a different plan that better fits theirEveryneeds.*September, these plans send out their Annual Notice Of Change (ANOC).

SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE Dentists are skilled medical professionals who undergo extensive training to qualify.

The indoor facility would have six tennis courts and six pickleball courts. However, depending on demand, some tennis courts could be converted into pickleball courts (each tennis court can yield three pickleball courts).

Feinberg anticipates the indoor facility would draw tennis fans from locations within an hour radius. He said tourists traveling to South Florida might start planning a portion of their trip around access to the facility.

BY MARIE PULEO

City BEAT

Plans are in the works to build an indoor tennis center on a 9-acre property located at 3100 W. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach. It would be the first indoor tennis facility in Broward County. The project is being developed by partners Neal Feinberg of Parkland and Carl Gordon of Boca Raton. Gordon is the principal investor in the project and an avid tennis player; Feinberg, who has approximately 25 years of experience in the tennis industry, would be the tennis center’s general manager and one of its tennis pros.

The tennis center would consist of a brick-and-mortar clubhouse with men’s and women’s locker rooms, a pro shop, a lounge, and possibly a café. The clubhouse would face Atlantic Boulevard. The tennis courts and pickleball courts would be housed in a climate-controlled pneumatic structure (known as a “tennis bubble”) adjacent to the south side of the clubhouse. The bubble — which would be accessed through a revolving door in the clubhouse — is durable and can withstand a Category 4 hurricane. In the case of a major storm, the bubble could be

The name of the facility, as of now, is Florida Indoor Tennis & Pickleball.

In July, the planning and zoning board unanimously approved applications from the developers to change the city’s land use designation of the project site from open space recreation to commercial recreation, and to rezone it from parks and recreation to commercial recreation. If the necessary approvals are obtained, construction could start in spring 2023, and the facility could potentially open in late summer.

disassembled quickly. At the Pompano Beach facility, the tennis and pickleball courts would be a cushioned hard surface, which has the bounce and play of a traditional hard court, but is gentle on the knees and legs, said Feinberg. LED lights would illuminate the courts and there would be divider nets between the courts to keep the balls from passing from court to court. An acoustic barrier between the pickleball courts and tennis courts would likely be installed to muffle the popping sound a plastic pickleball makes when it hits the hard plastic racquet. Pricing for access to the facility still needs to be determined. However, the intention is for it to be a hybrid that offers access to both members and non-members.

The City’s Bond Projects Are Slated to Be Completed this Month

The fire department should be installed in the new fire station and emergency operations center on Sample Road by Oct. 1, said Lighthouse Point Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk.Thenew community center at Dan Witt Park received a temporary certificate of occupancy this summer, which allowed the parks and recreation department to move into its new offices and hold summer camp there. Now that the summer programs are over, Kaufmann Lynn Construction — the construction manager of the bond projects — can address the final items that need to be completed before project closeout. Following that, the community center can proceed to get a full certificate of occupancy.

The community center hasn’t fully opened to the public yet because new pickleball and basketball courts are being installed just north of the building. Additionally, a portion of the park is being used to store construction materials for the new public works administration building, one of the city’s other bond projects. The pickleball and basketball courts are expected to be completed by the end of September.

The existing public works administration building is being renovated to be used for fleet maintenance; the new public works administration building is replacing the fleet maintenance building that was directly across the street.

Lighthouse Point Library First-Floor Expansion Project is Put Out to Bid

The alternate first-floor project was developed after it was determined that converting the second floor into a community room (roughly 1,200 square feet) would not be cost effective due to unanticipated challenges, including the logistics of keeping the library open during the upstairs construction.Lastyear,Kaufman Lynn Construction, the firm hired to serve as the construction manager for the bond projects, was asked to price the second-floor buildout of the library. The estimated project cost was over $1 million, compared to the city’s original budgeted project cost of approximately $600,000. The proposed first-floor expansion project received site plan approval from the planning and zoning board in May, subject to a strong concern about a lack of sufficient parking. The project was approved by the community appearance board in April.Atthe Aug. 9 city commission meeting, William Gallo, of Gallo Herbert Architects, who was hired as the city’s representative to oversee the bond projects, said he estimates the first-floor expansion bid cost would be $982,363, based on the current escalation of construction costs.

During the discussion regarding whether to put the project out to bid or not, Commission Vice President Sandy Johnson and Commissioner Patty Petrone suggested the city look into adapting Dixon Ahl Hall or the old fire station for the library’s uses, which would be less expensive than building the new library addition. They also expressed concern about the increased parking deficit at the Lighthouse Point City Hall complex that would result from the project.

The city commission, at its Aug. 9 meeting, reached a consensus to put plans for a proposed first-floor expansion of the Lighthouse Point Library out to bid. The first-floor addition would serve as a children’s wing. If carried out, the project would be funded with the 2018 voter-approved bond issue. It would replace the city’s original plan to build out the library’s second floor using bond proceeds.Thechildren’s wing would extend into a portion of the parking lot to the north of the library. It would be an 1,800-square-foot, one-story stand-alone building that connects back to the existing library building with an enclosed corridor. The children’s wing would also have an outside entrance and its own bathroom, so it could be used at night completely independent of City Hall. There would be a new paver plaza in front of the building that could be used for yoga.

“I still like this project, but I also want to be fiscally conservative,” saidCommissionLong.

Commissioner Michael Long noted current supply chain issues from the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation and suggested tabling the item for six months, which might result in better pricing.

President Jason Joffe said he was in favor of putting the project out to bid to find out how much it would cost. “I don’t understand how we as a commission, or how city administration, can justify no improvements to the library, after the residents voted on that bond,” saidCommissionerJoffe.

“These are the kinds of things that we’re trying to address,” said Licata.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Broward County is among the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.Inaneffort to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, the Lighthouse Point Police Department is conducting high visibility enforcement patrols along Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point (NE 24th Street to NE 56th Street). The patrols will run through Sept. 30 as a preliminary phase, and the intention is to continue them through the beginning of 2023, according to Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata.

Everett Marshall said he did not see a problem with at least going out to bid “to see where weAfterstand.”additional discussion about the possibility of repurposing Dixon Ahl Hall or the old fire station as a cheaper alternative, City Attorney Mike Cirullo pointed out that, based on his discussions with bond counsel, it is unlikely the city would be able to use the bond money to do a library annex at another building, because the project was presented to voters as an addition to the library itself. Commissioner Petrone concluded that the first-floor expansion project should be put out to bid to see how much it will cost, and then the commission can make a decision. Based on the information provided by the city attorney, Commissioner Johnson also said the project should go out to bid to get a price. The first-floor expansion project was put out to bid on Aug. 14, and proposals are due by Sept. 14. A discussion of the bid results is expected to take place at the first city commission meeting in October.

1 Going through the storm: You are actively dealing with a challenge that has you stressed and overwhelmed.

The challenge taught me a lot about business, relationships, and communication. I figured that the $142,000 was my investment in my MBA. Indeed, I had many sleepless nights due to stress, but I knew I had to stay positive and focused to come out of this crisis in better shape than I entered it.

Honor the Struggle

When you honor the struggle, you stay calm in the eye of the storm, and you focus on what you can control. Don’t worry about what is out of your control because you can’t do anything about it.

2 Coming out of the storm: Your challenge seems to be over for the time being, and you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

3 You are about to head into the storm: Something is coming that will put you in crisis mode. When you have ambitious goals, challenges will arise. Building a new business can be difficult, especially in the early phase while searching for customers and hearing “no” a lot. It can be discouraging and disheartening. Committing to getting in shape is hard, and it seems to be the most challenging right at the beginning. Your body is sore and incredibly fatigued, and your mind tells you to take the day off and chill on the couch. Fixing a broken relationship takes effort and commitment to turn it around. It only gets more complicated when you disagree about various situations, and you are learning to disagree without beingHonoringdisagreeable.thestruggle does not mean you are free from life’s problems. It means you understand that challenges and obstacles are a part of the process of goal achievement — and of life for that matter. Just as the sun will rise in the east and set in the west, you will face difficulties on the path to goal achievement.

When you have the opportunity to learn and serve, don’t complain about the effort involved. View struggle as a necessary, meaningful, and positive part of your journey to find true peace and personal power. Don’t bemoan the inevitable hardships of selfimprovement and chasing your dreams; have reverence for the challenge.

I like to see the challenges as God is trying to teach me something I need to learn. About 10 years ago, I had a business partner who was my original martial arts instructor since 1987. My wife and I discovered he had a shady past and needed to distance ourselves.

Melissa and I got a lawyer and attempted to get our school under our control 100%. It was a long, tedious, and stressful process. It ended when my instructor passed away seven months later. Then after he was gone, we found out he had used my school in Lighthouse Point and the other 11 schools he had as collateral to purchase a large building for his headquarters.

It cost me $142,000 to get my school out of probate and be able to rebrand, get back on track, and start growing the school again. Also, during that process, we lost over 120 students. Ouch!

Fortunately, that is exactly what happened. Honor the struggle when challenges knock on your front door. When life deals you some hard body shots, and you feel like you can’t handle it — step back and take a breath. Honor the struggle because you are preparing for greatness that lies on the other side. LIFE IS FULL OF CHALLENGES, DIFFICULTIES, AND PROBLEMS. THEY JUST SEEM TO SHOW UP, AND OF COURSE, AT THE MOST INCONVENIENT TIME. PASTOR TOMMY BOLAND WHO LEADS The Cross Church in Deerfield Beach, says that you are always in three stages of life.

Once you get a reverse mortgage, you will no longer have any monthly mortgage payments; however, you will still need to maintain your home and pay property taxes, insurance and monthly HOA. So when would I recommend a reverse mortgage?

Legal Matters

48 pointpubs.com • POINT!

If you currently have a mortgage and can comfortably afford to continue making the monthly payment, which includes taxes and insurance, it is generally not a good idea to consider refinancing into a reverse mortgage. If you have adequate savings and other investments and don’t need either the lump sum amount or the credit line, stay away from reverse mortgages. Typically, reverse mortgages have much higher interest rates, closing costs, fees and premiums than typical mortgages. For example, a $200,000 reverse mortgage today might have an adjustable rate of 2% over the prime rate (currently 5%) and closing costs, fees and premiums ranging from $10,000 to $15,000, versus a conventional mortgage at 5% or 6% fixed rate with closing costs of $3,000 to $6,000. Here is how reverse mortgages work. Lenders appraise the value of your home and allow you to borrow back money against the market value. Let’s say that your home, which currently has no mortgage, appraises at $400,000. You choose to take a $200,000 reverse mortgage with $15,000 in closing costs, fees and premiums. That is added on to the mortgage, so you now have a $215,000 reverse mortgage at 2% over the prime rate. It is called a reverse mortgage because, unlike a conventional mortgage, where you pay down the principal every month, the principal on your reverse mortgage increases every month based on the current interest rate. Of course, you have received the $200,000. If you are an astute investor able to earn more than 2% over prime on that $200,000, you may come out ahead of the game. However, if you put it into a savings account earning 1%, you are losing money every month. In addition, the home that you wanted to leave to your children (and that your children were anticipating inheriting) may have little or no equity by the time you pass away.

BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

Reverse Mortgage: Is It For You?

ASKED: “WHAT DO YOU THINK OF REVERSE MORTGAGES?” MY ANSWER IS: “IT DEPENDS ON EACH PERSON’S CIRCUMSTANCES.”

PUBLISHING

If there is no equity in your home when you die, it is likely that your children will walk away rather than inherit a property where the mortgage is higher than the value. Statistics indicate that the foreclosure rate on reverse mortgages is nine times the average for conventional mortgages.

I have clients with no savings and living barely on their monthly social security. If your quality of life is such that you aren’t running your air conditioner in the summer because you can’t afford the additional electric bill, and you have equity in your home, the reverse mortgage may be a way to help you survive and enjoy a better quality of life.

If you have children or other heirs that you want to inherit your home, I would strongly urge you to discuss the issue with them before getting the reverse mortgage. Otherwise, they are likely to be surprised and angry if they don’t find out about it until you die.

Sometimes, your heirs, if only to protect their future investment, may be willing to give you their own conventional mortgage. You would benefit from the lump sum you would receive, from which you could make the monthly payment at a lower interest rate with less closing costs. They would be protecting their inheritance.

So, if you are struggling financially and your heirs can’t assist you, a reverse mortgage may help you live a better life. The option that immediately comes to mind for most people is a prenuptial agreement, which formally specifies which property you want to remain yours in the event you get divorced. In general, it can make sense to consider a prenuptial agreement in situations such as these:

Case in point: a domestic asset protection trust, or DAPT, which can shield assets from both creditors and ex-spouses. A DAPT is an irrevocable trust— once you place assets in it, you can’t take them back or revamp the trust itself. This puts the assets out of reach of most claims and excludes those assets from the category of marital property. However, unlike with typical irrevocable trusts, you can name yourself as a discretionary beneficiary of a DAPT—thereby giving you access to the assets in the trust and control over who is named trustee.

Red Snapper Rebound

IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, ONE OF THE BIGGEST DEBATES AMONGST THE FISHING COMMUNITY AND MARINE REGULATORY AGENCIES HAS BEEN THE STRENGTH OF the American red snapper. Due to concerns over red snapper population levels, Florida set strict catch and bag limits for these beautiful and tasty fish. In most of Florida, recreational anglers are limited to two red snapper per person. That’s a pretty tight limit — especially considering these fish are mostly caught offshore, and the fuel costs are pretty high. These fish are a favorite target for many anglers as they can grow quite large and are delicious table fare. The Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsmans Association has held an annual red snapper tournament and trip every year in June for over a decade — indeed, a fantastic trip! We fish out of Carrabelle, Florida, just southwest of Tallahassee. Carrabelle is a charming community nestled along the coast where oystermen and fishers gather. For South Florida anglers, this trip is unique because they experience some of the best bottom fishing anywhere in the world and it’s pretty often that we will travel 25 – 40 miles offshore and not see another boat all day. One of the positive trends we are noticing as the red snapper population is apparently growing. We believe the snapper migrations affect the grouper and other bottom-dwelling fish. Based on historical catch data, experimental dives and underwater video, we believe that the snapper populations are pushing grouper to different areas of the gulf than they would usually congregate. In many cases, we are not catching certain species of grouper in areas where we have caught grouper for decades. When we look at the video and catch data, we see the snapper are so thick that they are eating everything and chasing bait (food) out of areas once dominated by grouper and other bottom snapper species. This has been a challenge for anglers looking to catch grouper. Not only are there fewer grouper in areas they have historically been, but the red snapper are also so thick that oftentimes you can’t get your bait to the bottom because the snapper are eating everything on the way down. Where grouper will usually stay closer to the bottom structure, snapper will school up higher in the water column — especially once feeding has Hopefully, begun.theFlorida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other state marine organizations are monitoring this. The fishing community must share their catch data with the regulatory authorities. In the meantime, there are plenty of red snapper to be caught. Red snapper are commonly found between 45’ – 125’ depths on structure and near undulations on the seafloor. Natural bait (cut sardines, cigar minnows, LYs, squid and bonito chunks) is always good. Live pinfish or other small bait fish will work well too. There isn’t a need to use knocker rigs or long leaders like you would use for a mutton snapper. Your mainline to a weight and 3-4’ of heavy leader and a good-sized hook will work fine. Y

1 cup fresh basil leaves

To make the whipped ricotta, place the ricotta into the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth and creamy. Season with salt. Halve the ciabatta bread lengthwise and split it open. Spread a thin layer of butter on the bread. Take the garlic that you roasted with the tomatoes and smear it on the bread. Place on a rimmed baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for about 5-7 minutes until the top of the bread turns a little golden. If you like it more toasty, place it under the broiler for 1-2 minutes. Remove from the oven. Spread the whipped ricotta on the bread. Spoon the tomatoes over the ricotta with a little bit of oil. When I graduated, I worked for a con gressman on capital hill in D.C. I didn’t care much for D.C., so I moved back to Chicago.

If business and civic leaders in Singapore hired Ty Tabing away from Chicago to develop their downtown project, I wanted to learn more about the person who will have considerable influence over the arts and cultural aspects of life in the Northeast Broward area and beyond.

When I read the press release about the new leader of cultural affairs for the City of Pompano Beach, the cities of Chicago and Singapore appeared. I was intrigued. I have been to our country’s third largest city many times and was usually impressed by what I encountered there. And Singapore has the coolest airport on the planet by many measures, along with other smart investments.

TT: They wanted someone with ‘big city’ experience who had led infrastructure projects and created art, culture and place-making projects, so I was ultimately selected.Ilived there for a two-year assignment to launch a non-profit to revitalize the area along the Singapore river that runs through their downtown. The city was di vided into three sub-areas. I was brought in to create hard and soft components to unify the river and create a destination.

TT: “Place management and development” is what it’s really called. That’s what I did in Chicago and Singapore. In Pompano Beach, my responsibility is city-wide, but I focused on specific areas in Chicago and Singapore. That’swhat I’ve done throughout my ca reer — I create trails of breadcrumbs to get people to go where you what them to go. Those breadcrumbs can be a little specta cle, create some sizzle, and put some show manship into events to get people to come.

Richard Rosser: How did a small town boy end up in the big city — eventually being named the “Chicagoan of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune?

INTERVIEW BY RICHARD ROSSER

TY TABING: Well, I went to grad school at the University of Chicago and lived on the South Side. I’m a Sox fan because I started out as a South-Sider. I fell in love with the city.

For a kid from Wichita, it was ‘bright lights, big city’ — just a heck of a place to grow up through my 20s, 30s and 40s and live the urban lifestyle. I spent eight years working for Mayor Daly in Chicago, so I was able to parlay that experience into running the downtown business organization, Chicago Loop Alli ance. I had been the mayor’s point person for downtown development projects, which became the first of four non-profits I have run in my career. I had a hell of a life in Chicago and would have stayed there indefinitely had I not had an amazing opportunity to move 10,000 miles from home to start a new non-profit in Singapore. (He lived for 24 years in Chicago)

RR: It seems like cities are more competitive these days. True?

PUBLISHING

TT: All cities are competing for tourists, that is for sure. So there is a need to create unique selling points. When I was in Chica go, we focused on architecture and culture. In Singapore, the two things that distin guished the place were the river and its his tory; the history of Singapore is tied to that river. It was the center of commerce that led to the skyscrapers that now fill the city. But yes, the competition among cities is more intense for sure.

RR: So, what is unique about Pompano Beach? TT: Transformation. The new downtown that’s being created, it’s no longer being called the innovation district, I understand. It’s a unique opportunity to create a mixedused area where there wasn’t anything before, to provide connectivity from the northwest side to downtown and old town — there are good bones. Fast forward five years from now, and Old Town is just hop pin’, with BaCA at the center of all that.

62 pointpubs.com • POINT!

RR: So after Singapore, your last project was in Wichita, your hometown?

TT: Wichita wanted to redevelop their down town — create some green space, a new convention center and a performing arts center — my background is really in urban planning. So if there were ever a moment to return to my hometown, this would be it, so I took a chance. That was working OK until the pandemic hit. The bottom fell out, and I reevaluated that plan. I decided to move to South Florida with no job and network my way into something. I met with RMA and Kim Breisemeister, and Earl Bosworth, the assistant city manager. I started consulting in February for the de partment of cultural affairs, then started full-time after two weeks.

TT: Good question. So during the Great Re cession, we had over 50 vacant spaces in our project area, so my department was focused on economic development. But we started a program to activate dormant spaces with art. Now, we didn’t have the expertise, but our local stake holders like Art Institute of Chicago, 65,000 students downtown, including students at several art academies. We partnered with existing downtown organizations and groups like the Mexican American Art Mu seum, which was in a neighboring city but wanted to be downtown. Our only two rules were no nudity or political messages. We spent some money to decorate the windows and storefronts to present them in a professional manner, and the program just kept growing.

RR: I’ve read that during the fallout of the 2008 recession, you hatched a plan to team up with local artists to create pop-up galleries in empty storefronts. It seems you have a history of turning sour grapes into wine. Where are the sour grapes in Pompano that have the potential to be good wine?

RR: With all due respect, the city has been talking like that for several years.

SEPTEMBER 2022 • pointpubs.com 63

TT: Well, please remember that with Old Town Square (apartment building), there will be 500 new residents right there. That is a lot of purchasing power. That is a lot of people within walking distance for coffee, dinner and events and I think you will see some big changes because of that in addi tion to all the other things the city is doing. People beget people and need more people living in that area. What do you think Pompano Beach is do ing well? I think the city does vision and long-term planning well. The plans for Atlantic Boule vard and Dixie Highway — a 35 million dol lar project — those projects don’t happen overnight, and they are very hard to make happen. What I think the city is doing right is creating long-term visions that will dis tinguish Pompano Beach going forward.

TT: It’s really a walking trail to incentiv ize movement. It’s like providing a little “something” — like the famous locks on the bridge in Paris, a place to sit, a sculpture, or whatever to keep people interested in mov ing along. When walking in cities, there is a lot of research showing that safety is essential, and when you can give people visual cues they can follow, they are more comfortable exploring deeper into an area There is a little of a science to this! The cues can help people think, “Oh, we can get from here to there, and it looks safe, and that thing over there looks cool, let’s go there.” INSET Ty Tabing RIGHT Architectural details at The Pompano Beach Cultural Center

Where are the “lemons” here?

Y

TT: I’ve been talking to some of the build ing owners in the Old Town area and downtown to see if we can activate those storefront spaces and bring in artists, gal leries and studios. Bringing some life to the windows of the Old Town area would really animate events like “Old Town Uptapped” (the monthly street event in that area that has been running for a few years now). (Ty makes a statement about “his vision for a walkable art and cultural district” so I ask him to explain)

So, we program three venues: BaCA, the Ali cultural Art Center and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. They are very close — just one mile between them. Previously, the Nation al Endowment for the Arts provided funding to our cultural affairs department to activate a trail to connect these three venues with a program like Untapped. I want to develop a culture trail that con nects the spaces.

RR: What is a culture trail?

I met with Drs. Catherine and Jared Young, a husband and wife dynamic dental duo, to talk about the history of their thriving practice in Lighthouse Point. Before we started talking, Jared and I watched a video together chronicling their practice. At one point, I glanced over and noticed that he had teared up a little. When Jared realized I saw, he said, “Ya know, it’s just very emotional watching this.” Clearly, he is proud of what he and Catherine have built at Bright Young Smiles. “I just thought coming up on 50 years with the building and the location, there is quite a legacy here,” Jared said.

As of 2022, there are 50 years of dental history at the building on 34th Court. Back in 1972, Dr. Jerry Klein practiced dentistry there. Dr. Klein, who passed away a few years ago, was a beloved member of the Lighthouse Point community — and was even selected as a “keeper” for Lighthouse Point Keeper Days. His daughter Beanie remembers that he was known for handing out toothbrushes on Halloween. Dr. Klein started his practice in Lighthouse point but then expanded with locations in Coral Springs and Boca Raton.

Most people get most of their cavities by the time they are 20 years old. Then after 20 years, those fillings can start to break down, and you will need more dental work like crowns or root canals. He said the goal is to get patients to 20 without any or very few cavities. He added, “then you’re in really good shape.”

Jared has seven plates and 47 screws in his “Butface.after that, I was able to bounce back. I only missed a week of school.” After talking with Catherine and Jared, it becomes apparent that they are passionate about what they do and proud of their practice. When Jared started out, he took photos of himself with his pediatric patients and gave them to his patients in magnetic frames. 12 years later, he told me that he often runs into people who tell him that the photo is still up on their fridge. He smiled and added, “everyone saved those.”

A few dental care tips from Dr. Jared Young

Dr. Jared Young’s number-one tip is keep up with your dental cleanings. A lot of bacteria in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body and have been linked to conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. “You want to keep the bacterial load in your mouth to a minimum.”Hesaidmany people are interested in teeth whitening, but “to be honest, there is no special secret; it’s only peroxide. That’s it. It is the only ingredient that ever whitens teeth. They can sell it in different formulations or shine a light on it. Nothing about whitening is lightactivated. Peroxide is heat activated, but your body temperature is what activates it, so shining a light at it during whitening essentially does nothing except enhance patient satisfaction. They like it. The patients love the light, but it has no effect.” I asked Jared how the practice of shining a light even began if it’s just a big waste. “Back when the lights were halogen and generated heat, there was some validity. But LED lights do not discharge heat, or very little,” he told me. He always recommends starting with whitening strips. He also mentioned that over the years, he has noticed little nuances. For instance, he noted, “there is usually one kid in the family who gets all the cavities for the whole family. And it’s usually the one who brushes and flosses, reads a book and goes to bed on time.” So there’s more to a healthy mouth than meets the eye. A patient’s immune system plays a role in their dental health as well as the quality of their teeth and saliva.

Jared’s path to dentistry was anything but ordinary. Initially, he dreamed of going to medical school to become a doctor. But when he was 18 and a senior in high school, he was in a horrible car accident and broke “practically every bone” in hisHeface.said the man “who put him back together was an oral surgeon — a dentist who does an extra four years of training after dental school.”
