Paying Your Dues IT ALL STARTED WITH AN ELECTROMAGNETIC field. I was working for American Express when it was discovered that my department was situated on top of an electromagnetic field. No one knew if this was unhealthy or conversely, if we would develop super powers previously unknown to man. At the time, Lou Lombardo served as the Executive Vice President of Operations for American Express Travel Related Services and I was one of the approximately 15,000 employees in his charge. It was widely known around the company that Mr. Lombardo started his career at American Express in the mailroom when he was just a teenager. From time to time, he held “town hall” meetings where he informed employees about company news and goals. He always invited questions at the meeting or via interoffice memos. I sent him a memo concerning the electromagnetic field. When his secretary called me to set up a meeting, I was stunned. This was a man whose days were scheduled to the minute. I expected a stuffy and aloof executive and was taken aback by how approachable he was. It was unmistakable that no detail was too trivial. And indeed, he listened to my concerns as to whether I would develop super powers or grow a third arm (he laughed at that joke). As I recall our meeting, I have even more respect for him. Since he rocketed through the company hierarchy to become a high-ranking executive at one of the most recognizable brands in the world, my guess is that he had a “can-do” attitude from the start. Just the other day, I was texting with a college friend who runs the advertising account for a luxury car brand at one of the world’s biggest agencies. She told me that several young employees requested to be moved off her account because they had been asked to design banners. Did they think as “newbies” they would be charged with developing worldwide creative campaigns?

Deerfield Beach!
We’ve all read about or encountered this curious, millennial attitude. My friend reminded me that she started out filing postcards. Later, she transcribed recordings from people who had been abducted by UFOs. She texted “I got that job because I filed the postcards so fast.” My own sister, with her newly minted masters degree in healthcare administration from Duke University spent her first week at a prestigious consulting firm coloring in bullets points with a Sharpie. Really, you can’t make this stuff up. There are countless articles about millennials: Some chastise them and their less than zealous attitudes toward work — expecting to skip over menial tasks and jump right into meaningful work. Some praise them — for seeking work they love and a balanced lifestyle. Others offer all sorts of explanations for this phenomenon. But here’s the thing: Someone has to file the postcards and color in the bullets. And the truth is, all of those jobs are meaningful and important. Anyone who has achieved any professional success at all can tell stories of their humble beginnings and how critical those experiences were to their accomplishments. The truth is you don’t know what you don’t know, and any business must be learned from the bottom up. Shortly after my meeting with Lou Lombardo, he arranged for my office to be moved temporarily while a construction crew created a new space for me and my fellow graphic designers. And no, as of press time, I have not developed super powers.

CRAZY ABOUT BURGERS The results are in from this year’s Riverwalk Burger Battle VIII. Fifteen restaurants made their way to Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale, but only a few returned home victorious. One such victor was a local favorite—Burger Craze took home the coveted “Best Burger Joint” award. Skeptical? Why not stop by and check out the “Best Burger Joint” around for yourself? Burger Craze is located at 2096 NE Second St. in Deerfield Beach in the Wyndham Hotel.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the other winners—even if they are a little out of the way. The other winners are as follows: The “Fan Favorite” award went to Metro Diner; “Best Bar and Grill” was awarded to Hard Rock Café; The award for “Best Knife and Fork” was given to Pelican Grand; and, last but not least, the “Best Burger” award went to Bokampers. — Daniel Myers

beach bits From Your Congressman CONGRESSMAN TED DEUTCH SPEAKS AT THE DEERFIELD BEACH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING, TOUCHING ON ISSUES REGARDING CLIMATE CHANGE AND PORT EVERGLADES BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU On June 1, 2017 the Deerfield Beach Chamber of Commerce welcomed State Representative Ted Deutch to its monthly breakfast meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel. Congressman Deutch, who represents Deerfield Beach as part of the 22nd congressional district, used the podium to applaud the progress being made on the expansion of Port Everglades, to thank Veterans in honor of Memorial Day and to touch on current issues regarding climate change.
Port Everglades
In May, Port Everglades received a unanimous approval from Broward County’s board of commissioners for a $438 million project to add new berths and install crane rails for new Super Post-Panamax cranes. The project is the most expensive capital improvement agreement awarded in the Port’s history. “One of the things that really drives our economy and South Florida as a whole, is Port Everglades,” Rep. Deutch said. “After pushing for almost two decades, we’re finally moving forward with expansion of the port, which is going to make it possible to bring in these larger vessels, the Post-Panamax vessels. That’s going to be great, not just for our economy at the Port, but for all of us, and everyone here involved in exports or the travel business. It will give us the opportunity to have more cruise ships. We have one of the busiest terminals in the world. We’re going to continue to push on that. This is a big priority of mine.”
Climate Change
As co-chair of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, Congressman Deutch spoke about the Caucus’ opposition to leaving the Paris Agreement. At the Deerfield Beach Chamber Breakfast on June 1, Deutch expressed hope that President Trump would keep a seat at the global table and not pull out of the Paris Agreement. Later that afternoon, President Trump publicly announced his decision to leave the Agreement. In response to the announcement, Rep. Deutch issued a strong statement: “President Trump’s unfortunate decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement all but guarantees we cede our leadership on this issue so vital to our future to China, Russia, and Europe,” Rep. Deutch said. “Sadly, it’s just the latest move in a string of actions by this President that have damaged our international relationships and weakened our global standing. This decision has the potential to irreparably harm our earth, dramatically hinder our economic growth, and fundamentally change our way of life. South Florida is already struggling with the effects of climate change, like worsening weather patterns and rising
14
Deerfield Beach!
sea levels. As sunny-day flooding becomes more common, the President responds by sticking his head in the sand in denial of the science and the reality in our own community. Will Mar-a-Lago Country Club need to be underwater for this President to make a responsible decision about climate change? If President Trump won’t listen to the scientists, then he should listen to the business leaders who strongly support the Paris Agreement. They understand that it will promote investments and create jobs. By removing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, this President is putting our country at a competitive disadvantage in the world.”
New Climate Change Legislation
In addition to speaking out against the Paris Agreement pullout, Rep. Deutch recently announced that together with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), he introduced new bicameral legislation called the Climate Change Adapt America Fund that would create a fund, administered by the Secretary of Commerce, to finance climate change adaptation and infrastructure resiliency projects. The bill would also authorize the U.S. Department of Treasury to issue up to $200 million annually in climate change bonds to be purchased by Americans concerned about climate change. The proceeds
would be directed to the Adapt America Fund and support investments that help states and local communities prepare for the impacts of climate change. “Americans are seeing the impact of climate change everywhere – from flooding coastlines and year-round forest fires, to extreme droughts and food shortages,” said Sen. Durbin in a press release. “I’m proud to introduce this bill with Congressman Deutch, which would give Americans an opportunity to help communities prepare for and deal with the damaging effects of climate change.” Rep. Deutch echoed Durbin’s sentiment. “With rising tides and sunny-day flooding, my constituents in South Florida are all too aware of the urgent need to respond to climate change,” he said. “There’s no time to waste. We need to jumpstart federal investments into projects that will help build resilient communities around the country that are prepared to meet the real-world challenges. I am thrilled that these climate change bonds will give Americans the opportunity to take action. What better gift for a newborn or high school graduate than purchasing a bond that invests in a clean planet for their future?” The full bill can be found at teddeutch.house.gov.
Memorial Day
In addition to discussing climate change and Port Everglades, Rep. Deutch used the podium to thank Veterans for their service. “Since we’re meeting here during Memorial Day week, I think this is a particularly special moment to just stop and be grateful for all that we have here. I serve in a place as your representative, as you may have noticed, that is occasionally a little contentious. And maybe everything doesn’t go smoothly every day—a kind way to put it. But the one thing that really reminds us of how important the work we all do is Memorial Day, and stopping to reflect upon those who have paid the ultimate price and gave their lives for our country. There are a handful of issues that unite us in Congress, and support for our troops, particularly for our veterans, is an issue that unites us.”
Deerfield’s Small Business Person of the Year Jerry Dubois, the owner of JWR Construction Services, was awarded “Small Business Person of the Year” from the Deerfield Beach Chamber of Commerce. Dubois has been an active member of the Chamber and instrumental in orchestrating events like the Chamber Pioneer Days Bed Race, the Annual Gala and Deerfield Beach Pig ’n’ Out. Dubois has been highlighted for his company’s two core operating principles: first, build a strong relationship with clients and second, remain involved in the production of services on their behalf. On his own time, Dubois serves on the Board of Rebuilding Together Broward, which helps provide safe housing for Veterans and low-income homeowners. Although JWR Construction Services has served clients across Florida, Dubois has made it stand out because of the way the company encourages building personal relationships with clients in the local community. OUTRÉ THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS AN ADAPTATION OF GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984 AT THE POMPANO BEACH CULTURAL CENTER
The Outré Theatre Company is presenting its sixth full season of provocative theater at the new Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The first show of the 2017-2018 season will be a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.” The adaptation, written by Andrew White, was premiered at the Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago in 2004 and later moved to Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. The play takes place in a world of perpetual war and omnipresent government surveillance. The “superstate” and its residents are dictated to by a political regime controlled by the privileged elite of the Inner Party. These elite persecute individualism and independent thinking as “thoughtcrime,” which is enforced by the “Thought Police.” The play is a haunting look at fascism and proletariat despair. “We live in perilous, quickly changing times,” said Outré’s Artistic Director Skye Whitcomb. “Our season reflects our commitment to thought-provoking work, and it also reflects the political and social climate we find ourselves in. We’re really looking forward to our new home in Pompano Beach and are very excited about the shows we’re producing.” WHEN: July 13-30; Thursdays-Saturdays, 8pm; Sundays, 2pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach COST: $39/adults, $29/seniors and $19/students and industry professionals. Tickets are available online at ccpompano.org or by phone at 954-839-9578.

Lessons From Bait Fish BY JIM MATHIE
WHO KNEW THERE ARE 125 DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF BAIT fish? Pompano Beach resident Patrick Lynch knows, because he’s co-owner of Bionic Baits. Lynch took me on a tour of his facility, which got me thinking about the lessons we can learn from a bait fish. But first, a little bit about Lynch and Bionic Baits: Lynch’s facility has 2.5 million pounds of bait at his 19,000-squarefoot Pompano Beach warehouse. Bionic Baits is considered the largest volume distributor of bait in the southeastern United States. They import and export bait worldwide. Much has happened to grow the business from its humble start as M & M
Baits in a 1,500-square-foot warehouse at Southwest 15th Street and Dixie Highway in Deerfield Beach back in 1994 to the massive place it is today. Patrick has a background that’s as diverse as the types of bait he sells. Born in the Atlanta region, his family moved to Marathon when he was young. He likes to say, “We come from fish,” and these early years helped him develop his knowledge for fishing, diving and boating. After earning his degree at the University of Florida, he became a stockbroker, but soon realized the fish business was in his blood. Growing up in Marathon, he would sell fish to various restaurants. That led to him opening Lynch Seafood Market at 437 E. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach in 1992. He even tried a stint in construction management, but had the
18
Deerfield Beach!
opportunity to co-own M & M Baits with Mark Montella and soon sold his seafood market, which is still in business today. The name changed to Bionic Baits because their ballyhoo baits seemed to “last forever,” even when trolling. Ballyhoo is a very popular bait locally and can be used to catch a large assortment of fish. In Lynch’s Pompano Beach frozen warehouse, there are plenty of workers ‘rigging baits’ with the proper hooks and packaging them for sale. But there are also plenty of ‘naked’ baits, meaning the fisherman will rig his own bait. As in life, it’s all about bait presentation. There’s an analogy to life with how the bait is “presented” while trying to catch fish. In life, many good ideas go unrealized unless they’re “presented” well. Obviously, the bait alone doesn’t catch the intended fish; it’s the hook and how it’s secured within the bait. Even if an idea is presented well, there needs to be a hook. And then, it’s how the bait is secured to the line. An idea needs to keep someone on the line. The bait fish also teaches us about the hierarchy of the food chain. For the most part, the 125 varieties of bait fish are at the bottom of the food chain. But even bait fish need to eat to survive. So technically, they are not at the very bottom. As in life, the small fish are eaten by the bigger fish and so forth until you get to the Apex Predator. But even with the top dog, there’s usually a bigger one in the crowd. The bait fish made me realize no matter what, there will always be someone bigger and better. Like the bait fish, you are who you are. But just as Lynch grew his business from scratch, you can strive to be the strongest version of yourself. After viewing the outcome of bait fish at the Bionic Baits facility though, I’d still rather be a Apex Predator. TIDBITS AND TRIVIA
Technology: Enough Already! BY JIM TERLIZZI
I FREELY ADMIT THAT I AM ONE OF THE “ELECTRONICALLY challenged.” My granddaughters, ages 8 and 6, have mastered computers, iPads and smartphones and currently are building centrifuges to enrich uranium, while I am lucky I can utilize my “dumb phone,” which only makes and gets calls. My son gave me a new car for my birthday. This was a revelation for someone like me, a member of “The Greatest Generation,” who are not so great at dealing with modern technology. I am not used to having my car talk to me, like when I veered over the white line and heard a beep, then this disembodied female voice saying: “Hello, this is Vera. You have changed lanes without signaling.” I thought that was cool, so I deliberately crossed the line again. The voice said: “What did I just tell you? This is not good. Don’t make me tell you again.” Now, being reminded is OK, but she doesn’t have to get snotty about it. Later, while waiting at a traffic light, I heard another beep and Vera said: “The car ahead of you has moved. You’re holding up the line. This is how traffic jams get started.” I started to long for the day when the driver behind you would honk his horn the instant the traffic light changed to green. This car has more cameras than the movie set of “Mission Impossible.” It has rear cameras, side cameras and front cameras, but my favorite is the camera for “girl watching.” It doesn’t operate in real time, as this would be a distraction. Instead, it digitally records all the pretty women it sees for playback later. You can set it for blonds or brunettes. I guess there aren’t enough redheads to make it cost-effective. Yes, there is a version that records “hunks” for the ladies. Speaking of cameras, my dumb phone does take pictures. I have used it to take more than 100 photos. I know they’re in there someplace, but I have yet to retrieve a single one. I’ll have to ask my granddaughters. The current electronic lexicon contains a lot of words I don’t understand, such as wi-fi, broadband, Skype, streaming, 2G, 4G,
20

6G, etc. When I was having a computer problem, my daughter told me to “reboot.” I thought that meant buy new shoes. I couldn’t figure out how that would solve the computer problem. I am, however, proud to report that I have learned to operate the GPS in my new car. I have become so proficient that I am able to mess with Vera’s head. I punch in the destination, then deliberately alter the route that Vera has prescribed. Vera: “Recalculating. In 200 feet make a legal U-turn.” I keep going. Vera: “Recalculating. Turn left at traffic light.” I keep going. Vera: “OK, idiot. Now you’re on your own.” Of course, I only do this when I know where I’m going. I love my new car, but it is beginning to scare me. It has started sending me e-mails. (True.) The latest one said: “Your windshield washer fluid is low. Please refill.” Then it got really scary when it added: “Buy the fluid at Publix. They have a twofer.” Y

Medical Legacy
BOCA RATON REGIONAL HOSPITAL CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY
ON JULY 17, THE BOCA RATON REGIONAL HOSPITAL WILL BE celebrating its 50th year of medical service to the community. One may believe the origins of a hospital to be a fairly uneventful story, but Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s origin is far from it—in fact, it appears to be something out of a movie. In 1962, Gloria and Robert Drummond’s children, Debra Ann and James Randall, were poisoned. Unfortunately, the closest hospital was around thirty minutes away and, due to the distance, by the time they arrived, there was little the doctors could do. The tragic death of their children drove the Drummonds to undergo the trying process of opening a hospital in Boca Raton—an act they hoped would spare any other lives from being needlessly lost. Gloria Drummond formed the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, named after her children, which grew quickly to 700
The first patient at Boca Raton Regional Hospital
members in just five years. The League raised enough money to open the hospital, opening its doors on July 17, 1967. The opening of Boca Raton Regional Hospital did not mean the end of the Service League—their work had only just begun. The Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League is still providing volunteers, orchestrating fundraising events and giving donations to this day. Today, members number over 1,200 volunteers. The Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League is not the only significant growth the Hospital has seen. By 1984, the original building had grown from 104 beds to 394 beds and nine floors. The hospital also added the 25,000 square-foot Debbie-Rand Memorial Pavilion which later became the home of the Women’s Center. Before
22

the end of the century, the hospital had also added the Lynn Regional Cancer Center, a new maternity wing, and the Davis Therapy Centers dedicated to rehabilitation. It appears that the hospital is growing exponentially, making a significant amount of additions. The hospital established the Christine E. Lynn Heart Institute in 2006, the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute in 2008, and expanded emergency services through the Wold Family Center for Emergency Medicine, established in 2011. Bernie Marcus, the CEO of The Home Depot, and his wife, Billi, provided the Boca Raton Regional Hospital with a $25 million dollar grant which was used to create the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. Later that same year, the Hospital opened the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute. These additions place the Boca Raton Regional Hospital at the forefront of medical science and development—particularly the Neuroscience Institute, which has become a major resource in the region for the growing field of neuroscience. Over the Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s fifty years of service, a lot has changed. What has not changed, though, is the dedication of the Hospital and the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League to serving the people of Florida. At the 55th annual Boca Raton Regional Hospital Ball on January 21, Edmund Nasralla, the President of the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, reminded attendees that they are “charged with the responsibility of ‘keeping the promise.’ To preserve and protect Gloria Drummond’s legacy, and carry it into the future with the drive and passion she bequeathed to us.” Given the development of the hospital, the myriad accolades it has received, and the many people helped, it is clear that the Boca Raton Regional Hospital has kept Gloria Drummond’s “promise.” “Here we are, today, charged with the responsibility of ‘keeping the promise.’ To preserve and protect Gloria Drummond’s legacy, and carry it into the future with the drive and passion she bequeathed to us,” said Edmund Nasralla, President of the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League. “Gloria’s unwavering commitment allowed us to build a Hospital that not only lived up to but exceeded her highest expectations.” “The unrelenting commitment from our community is rooted in the origins of Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The Hospital and its subsequent growth were made possible through the largesse of our generous donors,” said Mark Larkin, President of Boca Regional’s Foundation. “As you walk through our campus, this longstanding tradition of philanthropy is readily evident.” Y

Talking to Kids about Terrorism BY DR. JILL SELBACH
TERRORISM IS AN ACT OF VIOLENCE USED TO INCITE FEAR and draw attention to a cause. It is frightening because of its randomness and unpredictability. Children may be confused over how a person could harm themselves in order to harm others, especially to harm innocent children. The recent terrorist attacks in England, once again, brought fear into many of our lives. It brings back the memories of other horrific incidents here in the U.S. for many adults. Today our children are experiencing more
anxiety and higher levels of anxiety than ever before. Anxiety has substantially increased among children and college-age students since the 1950s. Anxiety is something most children experience as a normal part of childhood. It is typical for children to go through a temporary phase that resolves. But children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness and shyness, and they start to avoid places and activities. The attack at the Ariana Grande concert brought terrorism to a whole new level for our kids. Many are keenly aware of this event because it happened to a pop icon who is popular with our children, and she happens to be from South Florida. Kids are also more acutely aware of current events due to social media. Parents need to be prepared to answer questions and quell fears that have come up for our young people. It is important to know the facts and clearly share them with your child. We all know the age-old “telephone game.” Frequently, facts become
24
Deerfield Beach!
distorted, embellished or just plain wrong as more people share a story. Parents should ask their children what they have read or heard about the incident. Listen to what they know and how they feel about it. Facts can be clarified on an age-appropriate level. Answer questions they may have succinctly, and be sure to address the issues directly. Avoid giving unnecessary details or discussing issues they have not brought up. When parents discuss fearful situations in a calm manner, it helps the child feel calm. Children who view their parents as scared feel even more certain there is something they should be very concerned about. Shield your child from exposure to the news that would be upsetting for them to hear. Talk to your child about your intention to keep them safe, and talk about other adults around them who also have the goal of keeping children safe. Teachers, police officers and firefighters are all part of the community that is here to keep you and your family safe. Children’s anxiety may not go away overnight. Therefore, it is important to be there to provide ongoing emotional support. When unexpected or traumatic occurrences happen, it is helpful to continue with the daily routine. Keeping things the same and predictable helps people move on. Children are resilient and will typically bounce back from their fear. The following signs may be an indication of ongoing worry: • difficulty separating from the parent • trouble sleeping • nightmares about an incident or themes of it coming up in play or discussions regularly • changes in eating habits • avoiding situations that remind him or her of the incident • persistent worry that something similar will happen • a noticeable detachment of feelings about the event • jumpiness If your child consistently exhibits these changes in behavior that begin to negatively impact their ability to go to school, spend time with friends or family, or engage in previously enjoyed activities, it is time to seek professional guidance. Anxiety is an issue for which treatment is very effective. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. For more information visit drjillselbach.com or call 954-618-8412.

URBAN ADVENTURE
A Caribbean Day-Cay BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
STEPPING OUT ONTO THE SAND AND APPROACHING THE tiki hut for On the Beach Watersports is like stepping into a teletransporter with a direct flight to a remote island in the Caribbean. A rainbow-colored, 27-year-old parrot named Sarah squawks as she dangles upside down from a stick suspended from the beachside stand. You can smell coconut oil and citrus as Kenny the Suntan Man demonstrates his homemade lotions for a guest. Tropical frozen drinks are served from the poolside tiki bar, guests lounge under beach cabanas and the skin-drying sensation of saltwater hangs heavy in the ocean breeze. The sun-warmed sand beckons you to slip off your sandals and dig in your toes. If you’re looking for a Caribbean-style vacation without going very far, then taking a daytrip to On the Beach Watersports is the perfect getaway. The beachside vendor behind the Wyndham Royal Vista resort provides everything a tropical day should— relaxation, intoxication, excitement and leisure. There are jet skis, kayaks, standup paddleboards, cocktails, sail boats, cabanas and, of course, Sarah the Parrot.
You’ll be greeted by Kenny the Suntan Man, a charismatic and chatty New Yorker who has worked for the beachside vendor since 1983 and started his own suntan lotion line in 1985. Kenny hadn’t intended on being in the suntan lotion business, but when the resort he was working for at the time promised to provide free suntanning products for the Miss Florida pageant and bailed last minute, Kenny stepped in. “Two weeks later I was in Miami searching for a chemist. That’s when I picked up the name, The Suntan Man and started Under the Sun lotions,” Kenny said. Now Under the Sun products are sold online, in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean islands and various spots in the U.S. On the label is Sarah’s predecessor, a parrot named
26
Deerfield Beach!
Trigger. Kenny has been in the suntan and beach activity business ever since. On the Beach Watersports celebrated its 20 year anniversary at its current location on the first of June. “Basically what we do here is we show people what the proper use of suntan lotion is. We teach people how to tan safe in South Florida and enjoy their vacation. And we set the customers up with all the services they could want,” Kenny said. “We have jet skis, paddle boards, kayaks, sail boats, cabanas and chairs. We keep our prices low. A chair is only $5 for the day or $20 for the week.” Kenny said many of his customers are locals. “We get a lot of families that come every weekend. They live in the area and will walk over. The patio bar is open everyday from noon to closing,” he said. Kenny is not the only longtime employee working around On the Beach Watersports. Tony has been working there for almost 18 years (since he was 18), Henry has been there for three, the bartender at the tiki bar, Susie, for 19 and Sarah the parrot for 18. It’s easy to tell why. On the Beach Watersports is a little oasis. For my July Urban Adventure, Kenny invited me to help On the Beach Watersports celebrate their 20th anniversary. I took the opportunity to get my adrenaline fix on a jet ski. Kenny hooked me and my boss up with two four-stroke jet skis, Henry instructed me on how to work the beast, and I was off. Being on the jet ski reminded me a little bit of the last time I was on a mechanical bull, only this time I was in the middle of the ocean and could control the trashing myself. The ocean was choppy, so my new sea bull bucked up waves and crashed back down. My thighs burned as I hovered above the seat. As I pulled the throttle all the way down and gunned across the water, my arms tensed and I had trouble keeping a straight line. I squinted my eyes as the ocean water whipped my face. The feeling was exhilarating. Unfortunately, there’s a fairly contained space in which jetskiiers can cruise, so the path is pretty much a zig-zag, back-andforth track, but with enough speed and dare, the experience is still pretty gratifying. If jet skiing isn’t enough adventure for you, On the Beach Watersports also makes daily trips out to the Everglades for airboat rides and gator shows. “We have a shuttle bus that picks people up anywhere in South Florida within a ten mile radius of us.” said Kenny. “We bring people out to the Everglades to Holiday Park. We let the gator boys do the gator show.” Y On the Beach Watersports opens daily at 9am and closes between 6 and 7 at night in the summertime. Learn more online at onthebeach.ws. You can also order Kenny’s Under the Sun products at underthesunskincare.com. On the Beach Watersports is located at 1110 S. Ocean Blvd. in Pompano Beach.

Meet Your Mayor
VISION BILL GANZ The
of
HE SERVED EIGHT YEARS AS DEERFIELD BEACH’S DISTRICT 4 COMMISSIONER, AND JUST COMPLETED THREE MONTHS AS THE CITY’S NEW MAYOR. IT’S ABOUT TIME YOU GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT BILL GANZ. WITH A NEW VISION FOR A MORE UNIFIED CITY GOVERNMENT, A MORE TECHNOLOGYFORWARD OPERATION AND AN EXTENSIVE LIST OF REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, MAYOR BILL GANZ SHARES HIS HISTORY, GOALS AND UPCOMING PLANS WITH THE CITIZENS OF DEERFIELD BEACH. BY MARIE PULEO

After years of stagnation and political tension, the City of Deerfield Beach has a new mayor — Bill Ganz — and he’s on fire. “He has hit-the-ground-running,” said one city official. “It’s like Disneyland at City Hall right now. It’s a whole new atmosphere.” Ganz said his top three goals are to aggressively push forth new economic development and beautification projects, including the city’s new Pioneer Grove and Dixie Highway corridor; to implement new technology-forward ways of engaging citizens, including social media; and to create a more civilized, respectful and effective city government that can work together as a unified team. “I think his general approach for us,”
said Deerfield Beach City Manager Burgess Hanson, “is that we don’t buy into the old saying that ‘if it’s not broken, then you don’t need to fix it.’ We’re continually looking for ways to improve.”
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT One of the most difficult issues the city faces at this time, said Ganz, is that various federal and state revenue streams are being taken away or diminished, which has a significant influence on what happens in the city. Block grants and the Communication Services Tax are continuing to erode from year to year. “Trying to manage that certainly puts a challenge on us to make sure we keep a Deerfield Beach!

good healthy ship going here in Deerfield Beach,” he said. For Ganz, the economic development of the city is essential, not only in the shortterm, but the long-term. It will involve working with the Greater Deerfield Beach Chamber of Commerce to carry out the Citywide Economic Development Strategy, which was initiated last year. It is a longterm plan that was created as a result of the grassroots efforts of the Chamber and the city’s business community. A key component of the plan is the creation of Pioneer Grove, a new town center within the old “heart” of Deerfield Beach. This area, which lies just east of Dixie Highway and stretches from Pioneer Park in the north, to just below Southeast Fifth Court in the south, will be a walkable downtown with a vibrant mix of residential, office and commercial uses such as restaurants and retail.

The Dixie Highway Corridor, the city’s central spine, is also being redeveloped with a business-residential, mixed-use vision, and marketing efforts are underway to attract investors.
“Seeing the Pioneer Grove area and Dixie Highway reach their fullest potential, is something that’s going to be very good for the city both in the short-term and longterm, and I would love to be here and see that through,” said Ganz. One of the challenges Ganz sees when it comes to economic development is promoting growth that helps the City’s bottom line, but also maintains a quality of life for the residents. “I would like to see us keep the village feel we have in Deerfield Beach, but continue to grow in the areas that we’re doing really well in,” said Ganz. “We’re bringing some outstanding businesses into the city – not just major corporations, but small niche businesses – in the technology, medical and manufacturing industries. For us to be able to develop those relationships and continue to lure these great businesses, is very good for the long-term benefit of the city.” Another long-term goal that Ganz would like to see to completion is finding a way to better connect the Sawgrass Expressway to I-95 without disrupting neighborhoods along Southwest 10th Street. As a City Commissioner, Ganz worked with residents of Century Village and the surrounding communities to form a consensus to prevent an overpass. The 10th Street connector remains one of the most controversial projects in Deerfield Beach, and studies are currently underway to develop a solution. “It’s an issue that can have a severe impact on our city,” said Ganz. “We have worked with the communities to come up with a checklist of things that we want considered and that must be implemented in this plan to not only protect us from an adverse project, but also give us some

benefits that don’t exist now when it comes to dealing with traffic issues that we have.” Ganz said it’s important to ensure that the businesses that are coming to Deerfield Beach will have the mobility and level of transportation access they require. “We’re very fortunate with our proximity to the airports in Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Port Everglades, the Sawgrass, I-95 and the Turnpike. This really puts us in a unique position to build on some of these industrial and business areas that we have, which is going to help us long-term,” he said. In addition to these projects, three new hotel projects are in the works: a boutique hotel near The Cove Shopping Center; a potential addition to the Royal Blues Hotel on Northeast 21st Avenue near the Deerfield Beach Pier; and a new hotel at the building adjacent to the Billabong store on AIA, which is projected to have a rooftop pool and bar. The city is also in negotiations to purchase the Chamber of Commerce building at 1601 E. Hillsboro Blvd. The plan is to turn it into a city facility in which the Chamber could lease space, and which would also be associated with nearby Sullivan Park. As a city commissioner, Ganz was instrumental in bringing about the redevelopment of Sullivan Park on the Intracoastal Waterway, a project that was carried out by the Deerfield Beach
Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The centerpiece of the park, which had its grand opening in February, is an enormous mosaic splash pad, the city’s first major public art project. Ganz was an early proponent of creating the city’s public art program. “Sullivan Park is such a wonderful addition to the City of Deerfield Beach, and having been there from the very beginning, from the first conversations about it, to see that come to full fruition and for it to be as outstanding as it is, is really a great sense of accomplishment,” said Ganz. “The CRA has been doing an outstanding job, and funding has been used wisely to improve neighborhoods and the city overall,” he said. Ganz says the city is in need of more parks and athletic fields. In some areas, land is available, but a long-term plan is needed to ensure that the parks are developed in a way that best serves the residents. In 2012, the City received a 50-acre land donation from the old Tam O’Shanter Golf Course to be used as park space. The property, located south of Green Road between Northwest 13th Avenue and Military Trail, would effectively double space for athletic fields and other park amenities in Deerfield Beach, which has significantly fewer fields than many of its neighbors. “This is a major project that’s going
to take a great deal of funding and planning, and I would really like to see that developed,” said Ganz. Ganz would also like to see an expansion of the Johnny Tigner Community Center at the Oveta McKeithen Recreational Complex. Due to its aging infrastructure, it may need to be torn down and reconstructed. Some other projects include: The Rain Forest Project at the Deerfield Beach Arboretum, which should be completed by next spring; a nearshore artificial reef, which requires federal and state permitting, and is expected to be in place by the end of 2018; and a $1.7 million CRA project to remodel the North Beach Pavilion at Northeast 21st Avenue, which is scheduled for completion sometime next year. Throughout the redevelopment projects, Ganz says he hopes the city can make moves to become a greener city. When the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier was redeveloped in 2012, Ganz, along with other elected officials, championed the city’s pursuit to “go green,” which resulted in the pier project earning a LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It was the first LEED certified public facility in the city. “We set a very high goal when we redid the pier, and to get the LEED certification was a great accomplishment,” said Ganz. Ganz feels that, although the city got off to a strong start with its green efforts, Deerfield Beach!

it has gotten a little off track. His goal is to renew those efforts and make sure that issues are considered from a standpoint that is environmentally friendly and more sustainable in the long-term. Some first steps are plans to use compressed natural gas for City vehicles, and the recent purchase of a robotic lawnmower that will help with parks maintenance. Another goal is for the City’s operations to move toward becoming more paperless.
SEEKING UNITY When Ganz was sworn into office in March 2017, he not only became mayor of a South Florida coastal city with exceptional beaches, a thriving business district, extensive plans for redevelopment and a vibrant cultural diversity; he also became
Ganz’s goal is to make the city commission meetings efficient, professional and respectful, and “to operate in a manner that restores some dignity and pride to the City of Deerfield Beach.” “We’re still early into it,” said Ganz, “but so far, one of the biggest feedbacks I’ve gotten from people is that our meetings are quite different from what they used to be, and people are very happy about that.” Dealing with the fallout of a City Hall that has had a history of being “a little dysfunctional and disjointed” is one of Ganz’s top priorities. “We have a very diverse community,” said Ganz. “I feel that the atmosphere at City Hall has bled out into the city and created divisions. One of the challenges we have is bringing our city together.” After being elected mayor, one of the first
Letting people know what we’re doing also helps us in developing a long-term plan. We work for the residents, and if they’re informed about what we’re considering or what proposals are out there, we can get their feedback. That’s going to help us create a city that really meets the needs and the desires of the citizens, and that’s what it’s all about. MAYOR BILL GANZ
the leader of a city government known for its political tension. “Unfortunately, we were known for our chaotic and tumultuous city commission meetings,” said Ganz, who just prior to being elected mayor served two, four-year terms as the city’s northwest District 4 commissioner. “I think all of us had the desire for a different atmosphere,” he said. “Listening to people on the campaign trail, and to the two newest Commissioners as well, knowing that was their desire, our very first meeting we established that.”

things Ganz did was have the City Manager arrange for him to meet with each of the City’s departments to let them know what some of his goals are for Deerfield Beach, and to “set their minds at ease.” “The City of Deerfield Beach is very fortunate. We have an amazing staff, and I appreciate them,” said Ganz. “I thought it was important for them to know that.” Ganz told each department that his goal is to make them “the best-trained staff out there.” “I want to create an environment within the city that makes them never want to
leave us,” he said. The City has over 400 full-time employees, and approximately 300 parttime and “will call” employees (employees who are called to work on an as-needed basis). In addition, there are over 200 law enforcement officers and firefighter paramedics who are contracted through the Broward Sheriff’s Office. “I don’t have every name memorized, but I’m working on it,” said Ganz. “That’s a long-term goal.” “There’s a new wave of excitement and energy in the halls that we haven’t seen around here in a really long time,” said one City Hall employee. “It says a lot about the new mayor. I think it’s a good start, and that we’re on the right track.” Mayor Ganz has also had to cope with a long history of mistrust within the community toward city government. Three months before Ganz was elected to his first term as the city’s District 4 Commissioner in 2009, his predecessor and the sitting Deerfield Beach mayor were arrested on separate felony corruption charges within days of each other, and forced to leave office. Both were eventually found guilty of the crimes for which they were charged. In 2011, a Deerfield Beach city commissioner who had been a fixture in Broward politics for nearly 40 years, was charged with falsifying city records. She was removed from office the following year after a jury found her guilty of failing to disclose a potential conflict of interest. In 2016, the Florida Commission on Ethics found that probable cause existed that the sitting mayor had misused her office on five counts. “The track record when it came to trust and integrity at City Hall was certainly questionable,” said Ganz. “Over the last eight years, I’ve worked hard as a District 4 Commissioner to restore a sense of pride and a sense of trust. The people that I’ve worked with day in and day out have had a great deal of faith and confidence in me. Now it’s a matter of working with the other areas of the city and making sure that a lot of the things that we did successfully in the western district [CONTINUED ON PAGE 50] are what we
About Bill Ganz
Ganz was born in Hollywood, Florida in 1968. He grew up in what was west unincorporated Broward, near Davie. At the time, there was nothing but orange groves. His family moved to Cooper City when he was in middle school, and his parents still live there. “Both of my parents really have been great influences on me,” said Ganz. “The most important thing I got from my dad is honesty and integrity. He’s a man of his word, and that’s important to me ... my mom is just an angel, all the soft spots that you need.” Ganz says that growing up he was “a typical South Florida kid” with a love for the outdoors. He spent his days fishing, boating or at the beach. He graduated from Cooper City High School and attended Broward Community College, then transferred to Florida State University, where he was a theater major. “It was something I loved and had a knack for,” said Ganz. “That was going to be my career path.” The summer after leaving Florida State University, he was set to move out to Los Angeles, but met his wife Cristina while on a trip to Key West. “It was love at first sight for me,” he said. “She was somebody that I definitely wanted to settle down with.” Ganz and his wife, who’s from Coral Springs, have been married for 20 years and have lived in Deerfield Beach for the same number of years. They have two daughters, Danielle and Sara, who are both in high school. After Ganz decided not to pursue an acting career, he went to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and studied graphic design. He went to work for Power Images, a leading marketing and graphic design firm in Fort Lauderdale, and eventually became the Director of Internet Services, creating websites for major accounts like the Miami Dolphins and Arvida. Four years later, he got a job with Global Pipe and Supply, handling distribution, customer service, sales, marketing and contract negotiations. “It was a big directional change, but it was a great opportunity for me,” said Ganz. “It allowed my wife to be a stay-at-home mom, and it was a great company.” Since 2011, Ganz has worked at ComplyRight, a B2B marketing company specializing in Human Resources. He is currently a Business Analyst in their IT Department and a Certified Scrum Master (CSM), or team facilitator. He leads five IT Development teams as an Agile Coach. Ganz says his use of Agile development (an umbrella term for several software development methodologies) helps him in his job as mayor. “It’s a great tool to have,” he said. “I actually apply it with my approach to a lot of things in the city, whether it be simple problem-solving or looking at large-scale plans and narrowing them down to smaller achievable goals to work towards a big overall goal. It’s something I really enjoy.” During football season, Ganz also works for the NFL as a part of the Injury Video Review Team for Miami Dolphins home games. In the rare moments when he isn’t working, Ganz’s favorite way to unwind is to go fishing, whether it’s in the Florida Keys, on the Deerfield Beach Pier, or [CONTINUED ON PAGE 52] Deerfield Beach!

T
he quixotic quest for the perfect burger has consumed food journalists for quite some time. In an age when everyone is well aware they should be eating more vegetables, whole grains and fruits, we still pine for hamburgers. Recently, the Food Network tackled the national burger scene in “52 Top Burgers from Coast to Coast.” What a pleasant surprise to find our very own Charm City Burger on the map. Sure we know what a gem it is, but a little national recognition never hurt anyone. Of course we had been to Charm City many times since they opened a few years ago, but we made a special trip to celebrate — any excuse to indulge. Here are a few of our favorites...

[ The Big Sloppy ]
Many chefs will agree, top anything with a fried egg and you’ll be delighted. (OK, maybe not certain flavors of ice cream.) Along with a fried egg, this burger is served up with double cheese, peppered bacon and a hash brown. Don’t try to fight the mess. Just relish in the sheer delight as that bright yellow yolk converts your already sinful burger into a meal from the heavens. If this sounds appealing, but a touch overwhelming, a smaller version known as The Lil Sloppy is also available.
[ The Southern Belle ]
Inspired by cuisine developed south of the Mason-Dixon line, this choice is topped with muenster cheese, barbecue sauce, haystack onions, creamy bacon coleslaw, tomato and garlic aioli.

[The Volcano ]
If heat is your thing, The Volcano is a must. Topped with pepper jack cheese, volcano sauce (magmainspired hot sauce) and pickled jalapeño.
Hooked Up
For a little more flair (and money) with your patty, you can enjoy your burger “hooked up” with any of the following: thickcut peppered bacon, candied bacon strips, hash brown, fried egg, onion ring topper, sautéed mushrooms, extra cheese, seared foie gras, grilled onions, pickled jalapeño, blue cheese spread and double meat.
Charm City Burger Company is located at 1136 E. Hillsboro Blvd., Deerfield Beach. Visit charmcityburgerco.com for more information.
Some of our other favorites The Emperor
How often do you get treated like royalty? For truffle fans, this choice is a no-brainer. It’s a half-pound Wagyu beef patty topped with sautéed mushrooms, aged Gruyère and truffle aioli.
The Cowboy
The traditional bacon-cheeseburger gets a makeover. The Cowboy is topped with thick-cut peppered bacon, cheddar cheese, sautéed onions and mushrooms. It’s a safe choice, but the cumulative quality of all the toppings elevates The Cowboy beyond your typical bacon-cheeseburger.
Beyond Burgers CHICKEN SANDWICHES We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the folks at Charm City extend their game to chicken sandwiches, a veggie burger and several impressive sides. For a satisfying chicken option, try The Cheffy — topped with candied bacon strips, grilled onions, blue cheese spread, sweet chili sauce, lettuce and tomato. DON’T BE SURPRISED Beyond chicken and burgers, they also offer sushi tuna, which is ground ahi tuna served with kimchi slaw, wasabi aioli and a sweet soy glaze. The Greek is a spiced lamb burger with Greek salad slaw, garlic tzatziki, tomato and feta. Even their turkey burger is full of surprises —

topped with Swiss cheese, cranberry mustard and served on a whole wheat bun.
SALAD? Yes, you can even find kale on the menu. Try the kale and apple salad crunch to offset any negative effects from all the beef, cheese and carbs. If you have kale with your meal, there’s no need to feel guilty for splurging on a big, juicy burger.
THE HIPPIE Our summer intern Daniel is a vegan. And even he found something to eat. The Hippie is a veggie burger made with a blend of beets, ’shrooms, grains and oats.
MAC AND CHEESE BITES Imagine macaroni and cheese, breaded and then fried. Guess what, you don’t have to imagine it. These sinful morsels are available at Charm City and served with a side of their Volcano sauce.
THE USUALS Of course, any burger place should be judged by its fries, and Charm City’s hand-cut fries are truly addictive. They also serve hand-cut sweet potato fries and tater tots. The formidable beerbattered onion rings are

THE VISION OF BILL GANZ [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33]
can do citywide.” People’s mistrust of government is an obstacle, but not a hard one to overcome, said Ganz, and “you do that by hard work and performance.”
21ST CENTURY COMMUNICATION For Ganz, communication and transparency are essential to informed decision making and problem solving. Ganz’s vision for Deerfield Beach includes moving it forward into the 21st century when it comes to technology and keeping people informed of what’s happening in the city. He thinks it’s important for residents to know not just what decisions are made, but why they are made. Since Ganz has been mayor, more information than ever is being communicated to residents. “Letting people know what we’re doing also helps us in developing a long-term plan,” said Ganz. “We work for the residents, and if they’re informed about what we’re considering or what proposals are out there, we can get their feedback. That’s going to help us create a city that really meets the needs and the desires of the citizens, and that’s what it’s all about.” As mayor, Ganz plans to use social media to better engage the public about important issues and to promote Deerfield Beach, something the city’s mayors haven’t done in the past. He just launched his mayor’s Facebook page, and is also available on Twitter (@DFB_MayorGanz). When Ganz was first elected as a City Commissioner, he created an email newsletter and email crime alerts for his district. As an extension of that, Ganz has now started a Mayor’s Newsletter and a citywide crime report that is sent to subscribed residents by email and updated regularly. In addition, a new real-time citywide notification system, called Deerfield Beach Alerts, was recently implemented in conjunction with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. It informs residents via Twitter (@DFB_Alerts) of incidents impacting the public, such as crimes in progress or serious traffic accidents. For now, the service is only in English, but more languages will likely be added in the future. Ganz feels that keeping residents informed of crimes happening in their surroundings is important both from a safety standpoint and as a crime prevention strategy. It was Ganz who, as a city commissioner, pushed for the creation of a CrimeMapping application which the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) launched in 2014. This webbased interactive service provides any Broward County resident with crime [CONTINUED ON PAGE 52]

statistics and trends in the areas served by BSO. Even as a private citizen, Ganz was concerned about keeping residents informed. He would contact City Hall and find out what was happening in his neighborhood, then created email crime alerts that he disseminated to as many people as he could. He also helped found the West Deerfield Committee Alliance (a group of homeowner’s associations in the western portion of the city) in order for them to share information and create a united front when dealing with City Hall about issues pertaining to their neighborhoods. As mayor, one of Ganz’s goals was to create an app that allows residents to report pot holes, vandalism, broken park benches, power outages and other issues right from their mobile device. That service, called “Fix It,” is now available and can be found within the City app called “Inside DFB.” “There are many different ways to reach people,” said Ganz, “and we want to utilize them as much as possible.”

right off the Deerfield Beach coast. “That’s probably my passion,” said Ganz. “I have zero time for it, but I love to fish. In my dreams, that’s what I’m doing.” Ganz entered into politics as a result of serving as Vice President, and eventually President, of the Deer Isle Homeowner’s Association. His first experience in working with the City was when he helped bring traffic calming measures to his neighborhood. Although, over time, Ganz’s involvement in his HOA diminished, the HOA Board came to him when it needed his help in stopping a City plan to put a cell phone tower in the Villages of Hillsboro Park. The City had developed the plan without any public input, and was going to use park space for the tower’s large concrete base. “That’s what got me interested in what was happening at City Hall and the decisions that were being made there, said Ganz. “I started attending Commission meetings. I didn’t have any plans of running for office, but the more I went, the more I thought I could assist.” “I don’t think I’ve missed a single Commission meeting in 10 years, and I’ve been in office for eight,” he said. “It became a passion, because I really felt that I could make a difference.”

sage advice
The Tapestry of Recreation WHY SHOULD CITIES FUND RECREATIONAL opportunities that clearly attract a limited number of residents? A recent newsletter from Pompano Beach commissioner Mike Sobel referred briefly to a $2.5 million annual subsidy for the city golf course. His remark was clearly meant to spark this question among residents. Should all of the city’s taxpayers fund lower fees so residents who choose to golf can do so at a lower rate? Clearly golfers can afford to pay the full amount, right? What about beach visitors expecting a clean, well-maintained beach area or fisherman at area piers getting access to the ocean for much less than the cost to provide? Should parents of local youth pay all the costs for sports fields, lights, etc.?

So I called city leaders in area cities to probe for answers. The mayor of Lighthouse Point, Glenn Troast summed up the issues this way: “That’s a difficult issue to assess because there are so many intangibles.” Clear answers in black and white are not easy in the arena of recreation and leisure activities. There are not many special formulas or easy comparisons to other cities. What one city spends on a specific program may be very different from what is spent in another city.

Deerfield Beach!
BY RICHARD ROSSER
The answer to the question lay within the context of local politics: elected officials who live and govern within each city must campaign face-to-face with residents. If residents are happy about life in their city ...these leaders know it. When residents are unhappy, commissioners hear about it. Recreation is part of everyday life and happy residents go about their days not bothering commissioners. Unhappy residents let their thoughts be known. A large group of seniors in Lighthouse Point wanted to add yoga classes at the library, so they raised there voices and now those are available. Obviously, the funding made sense to enough people. Sure, one can argue that a city “needs” a golf course, city pool or tennis center to attract residents or new businesses. There is some truth to this; but one could say that all those amenities can or should be funded by those who use them. There isn’t a publicly-funded trampoline center and yet those seem to be a whole lot of fun for kids. The long list of area programs is excellent, but clearly I could list many other activities that might be offered to residents. Unfortunately, there is no recreation formula available for any city. The tapestry of our lives involves a variety of aspects that bring us joy and happiness. Many seniors clearly remember being a kid playing at the park or recall being a young parent taking their kids to local sport leagues. Their tax dollars to support those programs pay into a system their grandchildren now enjoy. Some people fish, some play golf and some like big holiday parades down main street. Together, we make our preferences known and explore new options to create a better quality of life for everyone. The word “love” is tricky for politicians but I can use it. Do you “love” living where you live? Why or why not? Using tax dollars to support selected recreational programs and facilities is a critical part of creating that feeling ... but very difficult to quantify. If you don’t love where you live, call your commissioner to suggest new colors for the tapestry.
