CREATIVELY SPEAKING
BY SUSAN ROSSER
Dinner for One, or Four or Two or Three The incoming text message from Sam, my teenage, about-to-go-off-to-college son, took me by surprise: “go buy 20% ground beef chuck.” Then another text: “and potato buns.” Huh? Since he was texting from the far off land of his bedroom upstairs, I could easily confirm that he, himself, wished to prepare hamburgers for the family using a technique he learned on YouTube. (This from the kid who would often consume a bag of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers and call it lunch.) It seems I have unexpectedly passed my obsession with dinner to my offspring who ask me each and everyday, “What’s for dinner?”. Last summer, after hiking up and down a mountain in the Adirondacks with my husband Richard, I exclaimed something like “Cool, we burned so many calories today, we can have an amazing dinner.” For the past 18 years I have cooked dinners for my family. For the four years before that, I cooked dinner for Richard and myself; and before that, I cooked for myself. Yes, I enjoy cooking — but more than that, dinner is important. Dinner is sustenance. Dinner is a ritual. Dinner is love. Back when I was single, I always cooked for myself. Firstly, dinner marked time. When I got home from work, the temptation to plop down on the couch and watch television until it was time to go to sleep could be overwhelming. But in my mind, I thought I shouldn’t veg out until after dinner. Before dinner, I would fill my time with a walk or a bike ride. Other times I would read out on my balcony. After that, it was time for dinner. I would head to my kitchen to chop, steam, roast or boil. Dinner marked the end of the day and the start of evening —basically, now it was OK for me to get in my pajamas.

I’ve asked myself why I would bother with dinner when I lived alone. I suppose a proper dinner is a ritual that brings me some level of comfort — even if it’s just me. Naturally, when others are involved it’s even better. Eating together brings people closer in unexpected ways. How many dinner conversations have gone exactly as you would have predicted? Um, none. Recently, my daughter had four girls sleep over and when I asked her if they wanted me to order pizza or cook dinner, I was both surprised and thrilled when the girls opted for me to cook. I made a Caesar salad, garlic bread and spaghetti with meatballs — all from scratch. I served the salad, and when I brought out the garlic bread, one of the girls who has eaten dinner at my house several times whispered to her friend “See, I told you.” It was as if she was saying, “See, dinner here is a thing.” Yes, dinner at my house is a thing. I guess when I say “dinner is love” I mean when I am cooking for just me, my family or for friends it’s all about the love. My daughter Zoe is away at camp for the summer, but one of her friends will be studying abroad next year. She leaves in August and I offered to make her a farewell dinner for her and “the girls” even though Zoe won’t be back yet. When they texted me yesterday to ask if I was free, I have to admit I finally felt like the cool mom. And now with one kid (who can make a mean burger) away at college, and the younger one following in two years, dinner at our house will go back to just me and Richard. We will find comfort in that ritual together (among other things).

Lighthouse Point Ballot Questions
Hillsboro Lighthouse Gets Needed Repairs
The City of Lighthouse Point will have four questions on the Nov. 6 Ballot: three questions regarding Charter Amendments and one question regarding General Obligation Bonds. A complete listing of these ballot questions can be reviewed on the City’s website. Prior to the ballot, the City will conduct budget meetings. Here are the details:
A team of preservationists has undertaken the complicated task of installing newly designed and manufactured sleeve brackets into the Hillsboro Lighthouse. These brackets are to enhance the upper level column sockets that have now deteriorated. Although only three sockets are deteriorated beyond their serviceable limits, the Coast Guard Engineers and Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society (HLPS) jointly decided to place support sleeves on all eight top-end sockets. A very special method was chosen to manufacture these sleeve brackets by eliminating all welding joints, called “CNC flame cutting technology.” Lighthouse keeper Art Makenian is leading the project.

City Commission Approves Contract With Firefighters, New Pension Plan Terms POLICE STILL SEEKING A RESOLUTION After more than a year of negotiations, the city and the union representing its firefighters have finalized a new collective-bargaining agreement. At its July 10 meeting, the City Commission approved the new contract, just days after it was ratified by the labor union. A contract for the city’s police officers was also to be brought to the Commission for approval at the same meeting, but was pulled from the agenda because a majority of police officers had rejected it. The city began negotiations with firefighters to renew their three-year contract several months before it expired last September. The new contract – which is retroactive to October 1, 2017 and expires September 30, 2020 – addresses the pension plan issues that had prolonged the negotiation process. Lighthouse Point firefighters and police officers currently pay 16.34 percent of their yearly wages to their pension plan, one of the highest rates in the state of Florida. The city contributes 22.27 percent. The city’s first responders expressed dissatisfaction when, earlier in the year, the actuary who manages the pension plan recommended the city increase their contribution rate to 21.26 percent. Some police officers warned city officials of a mass exodus of personnel. Several have already left, and a number —Nick Palmisano of others have sent out job applications. Both the firefighters and police officers believed the long-term solution to the pension problem would be for the city to freeze its municipal pension plan and switch to the Florida Retirement System (FRS). Under the FRS plan, the contribution rate for first responders would be three percent, and the city would contribute 23 percent. Deciding on how to transition to the FRS was a stumbling block in the negotiations.
We’re pleased that things are moving in the right direction We’ve crossed one hurdle, but still have a few more to get through. It’s important that we keep this sense of urgency to finish the process of moving to the FRS.
32
LIGHTHOUSE POINT
| lhpmag.com
The new deal for the city’s firefighters will give them the option to switch to the FRS plan, remain in the current pension plan, or convert to the city’s existing defined contribution plan, which is a 401(k) plan with a city contribution rate of 14 percent and an employee contribution rate of eight percent. All new firefighters will be enrolled in FRS. “We’re pleased that things are moving in the right direction,” said Nick Palmisano, the fire department’s union representative. “We’ve crossed one hurdle, but still have a few more to get through. It’s important that we keep this sense of urgency to finish the process of moving to the FRS.” One of the next steps is for the City Commission to amend the city’s current pension ordinance to include all the changes the firefighters agreed to. In addition, the FRS requires that the first responders vote on whether they want to enter into the statewide plan. Currently, the firefighters and police officers have to vote together because they’re in a joint pension plan. Unless the pension plan is split, that vote will be delayed until the city and police officers reach an agreement. The police department’s three-year contract is up for renewal this October, and contract negotiations began in May. In June, the city presented police officers a contract identical to the one it offered the firefighters in terms of joining the FRS and other pension plan options. Other provisions in the firefighters’ contract include a two percent base pay increase retroactive to Oct. 1, 2017, and a one percent raise in 2018 and 2019. Police were offered a similar wage increase over three years. While firefighters voted 18 to 1 in favor of their contract, police officers voted 17 to 8 against theirs. Chris Merk, one of the police department’s union representatives, said that a meeting of police personnel was planned to determine exactly which contract terms they were dissatisfied with, and how to come to a resolution. Merk said that even though an overwhelming majority voted against the contract, he and fellow union rep Chris Thompson, along with several other key members of the department, are going to do “everything we can to bring a fair and acceptable contract for everyone involved.”

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Developer Submits Proposal to City
Plans for major redevelopment of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club have taken another step forward. It was announced at the July 10 City Commission meeting that earlier in the day the developer, Terry Paterson, had submitted a proposal for a land use plan amendment, which is needed for rezoning purposes. Terry Paterson The 55-page document is the first application the city has received from the developer relating to the project. While Paterson had gone before the Planning and Zoning Board to discuss the redevelopment plans, nothing formal had ever been submitted. The application is a request for an amendment of 3.4 gross acres of the yacht club property from “commercial recreation” to “multifamily” residential, in order to build 36 three-story townhomes lining the waterfront. The proposed amendment area is located north of NE 42nd Street between the San Marco and Rialto canals. The developer is proposing to build a state-of-the-art yacht club facility, which includes a new Rendering of proposed Yacht Club 35,000-squarefoot clubhouse. The estimated expense for the development of the club and land is roughly $32 million. Funds generated from the proposed townhouses would be used to subsidize the cost. The city is starting the review process of the land use plan amendment and will meet with the applicant. The proposal will need to go through the city’s Development Review Committee, the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Commission. It will then go to the county for review, and come back to the City Commission. A site plan was submitted with the application, but it will be reviewed under a separate process. The developer has said that he hopes to break ground for the new clubhouse by mid-2019. Because of the scope and importance of the project, the Commission asked the city administrator and city attorney to organize a public workshop where members of the community can provide their input. Details for the workshop are being worked out, but it will take place this summer, most likely in the commission chambers.

Lighthouse Point Streets To Be Renamed “Intracoastal Drive”
At its June 26 meeting, the City Commission passed a resolution to rename parts of NE 24th Street, NE 30th Avenue, NE 31st Avenue and NE 48th Street along the Intracoastal Waterway as “Intracoastal Drive.” The idea was presented to the Commission in March by longtime Lighthouse Point resident and former mayor Leo Bentz. Bentz told the Commission that if they approved the project, he would raise the funds necessary to purchase and install the new signs. Broward County will perform a formal field review and provide a detailed estimate of the cost to replace all existing signs. The county gave an initial estimate of approximately $250 per sign, but that amount could change once the field review is carried out. After the city approves the cost and sign mock-ups, fabrication and installation will begin. Bentz estimates that about 25 new signs will be needed. They will have the names of the existing streets and avenues underneath the “Intracoastal Drive” designation, similar to the signs on Marina Drive and Lighthouse Drive. The signs could be installed by late September. Bentz said the idea stemmed from a conversation he had with a real estate broker who mentioned the value of giving streets in Lighthouse Point “fancy names.” He told Bentz, “You could be living on Intracoastal Drive instead of 31st Avenue.” That piqued Bentz’s interest, but it wasn’t until about a year later that he decided to act on the idea. He contacted about 20 people who live along the Intracoastal in Lighthouse Point, and “everybody was quite pleased and interested,” said Bentz. “That’s why I pursued it.” Bentz said that renaming the streets Intracoastal Drive will not only make them more easily identifiable, but will add prestige and, by his estimations, increase the value of every home on the Intracoastal by at least five percent. Friends and neighbors have offered to help Bentz with the cost of the new signs because “they’ll all benefit by it,” said Bentz.

News from Pompano Beach BY JEFF LEVINE AFTER YEARS OF STABILITY, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF NEW FACES ON THE POMPANO BEACH CITY COMMISSION NEXT YEAR. ONLY TWO INCUMBENTS ARE RUNNING FOR REelection out of five districts. We will also be getting a new mayor due to Mayor Lamar Fisher’s decision to run for the Broward County Commission. The four candidates for mayor are: Cynthia D. Floyd, Rex Hardin, Desbresia Nathel Lasane and Mike Sobel. Hardin and Sobel are already on the city commission and are considered the front runners at this point. Charlotte Burrie, longtime district two commissioner, had been planning to run for mayor, but in a surprise move decided against going for either mayor or her commission seat. The announcement caught some off-guard and wondering her reasoning. I’ve been told by several sources that her withdrawal was not due to any medical concerns, thankfully, but more so because she didn’t want to cause a splitting of votes between herself and Hardin. Ms. Burrie did not respond to requests seeking comment. Burrie and Hardin have come to represent the status quo in Pompano Beach, including Vice Mayor Charlotte Burrie continuing the efforts Photo by Jeff Graves of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and its work with Regional Management Associates (RMA), the consulting team responsible for much of the new development in the city’s two redevelopment zones (the beachfront and Old Town). Sobel has tended to position himself as an upstart, questioning many previous commission decisions and looking for alternatives for future plans. This might be an oversimplification, but if you are generally happy with the way the city has progressed over the past half decade or so, Hardin is probably your man. If you think we need to make serious changes moving forward or want new blood, Sobel, Floyd and Lasane are likely the candidates to take a look at. In other news... to the bridge on East Atlantic Blvd. has been sold? Father Bernie Pecaro told me changing demographics, continual repairs and upkeep costs for the 60-plus-year-old building and an opportunity to get top dollar for the prime waterfront property, were all factors considered before making the difficult decision to sell. The buyers of St. Martin Episcopal also recently purchased the Atlantic Square Shopping Center (Umbertos, Dollar Tree, 26 Degree Brewery, etc.). In the next year or so, the church will temporarily relocate to the shopping center, while determining its long-term plan. The developer has BIG (and controversial) retail and residential plans for Atlantic Square, but what they plan to do with the church property specifically is not yet known. I’ll keep you in the loop as I learn more. Stay up to date One of the goals of this column is to keep you up-to-date on the progress of the many projects happening around the city. So... • The new fishing pier is more than half way done and on schedule to open in March 2019. • As for the shops and restaurants being built near the pier, the Oceanic restaurant is also looking to open in March 2019. Lucky Fish, the open air, tiki bar on the sand, and Alvin’s Island beach apparel shop are both hoping to get construction started in the next month or so. • By the time you read this, the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge project is expected to be in high-gear, which will mean a few months of lane closures. Construction teams plan to complete that phase before snowbirds return and make traffic totally crazy. The bridge project is projected to be finished by the middle of next year. Fireworks & Sea-“weed” Did you know that fireworks aren’t actually legal for general use in Florida? Yes, you can buy them at Publix and hundreds of other places, but the only legitimate reason to purchase them is to scare away birds from agricultural areas and fish hatcheries. I never realized how many hatcheries are located in my neighborhood. And, speaking of illegal substances... a boater was fishing off the Pompano coast on July 2 and caught a big bale of marijuana. The naive, er...good, citizen promptly buzzed the good men and women of the Coast Guard who swiftly bogarted the haul. We’ll keep you posted on the date of a possible upcoming Coast Guard bake sale. Changing Times BY JIM TERLIZZI AS OF THIS WRITING, THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT, WHICH HAS BEEN A BEAUTY COMPETITION FOR UMPTEEN YEARS, RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT NO LONGER WILL INCLUDE SWIMSUIT OR evening gown segments and good looks will not be a factor in the judging. Ergo, it will be a non-beauty beauty pageant. Huh? This means that ugly people now will be able to enter a national beauty contest, which I suppose is a good thing, despite the fact that it makes the contest a non sequitur. Also, it is the start of a trend. Next year the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest will change its format. While the contest name will not change, instead of consuming “tube steaks” contestants will eat broccoli. Contest officials feel that this will send a better message to our youth. However, they continue to ignore the message about stuffing yourself until you puke. The National Olympic Committee (NOC) also is considering a change. Instead of engaging in sports competitions,
38

Olympians will write essays about their particular sport. The action will be carried by ABC’s “Wide World of Boredom.” One of the benefits of this change will be that the NOC no longer will have to conduct drug testing, as there will be no way to tell if an athlete was stoned when he wrote his dissertation. However, they will have to initiate a “plagiarism committee,” which will add several billion dollars to the cost of running the operation. Publishers Clearing House will revamp its sweepstakes. Henceforth you will be required to purchase 237 magazine subscriptions to be eligible. First prize will be enough money to pay for 237 magazine subscriptions. Buying subscriptions will not increase your chances of winning. However, it will increase your chances of going broke. The Miss Teen USA pageant now will be open to anyone up to the age of 112. A spin-off will be created for those in their hundredand-teens (age 113 and above). This next one would be funny if it weren’t true and the potential consequences weren’t so dire. (I swear I’m not making this up.) About four years ago the Federal Aviation Administration changed its criteria for hiring air traffic controllers. In the name of “diversity” they issued a biography questionnaire. If you answer yes that you flunked science in school, 10 points were added to your score. If you were a licensed pilot you got two points. If you have been unemployed for an extensive period you get more points. The list goes on but you get the point. To be serious for a moment, I don’t care about the skin color or sex of an air traffic controller. All I care about is competence to keep flying safe. You might consider asking your federal representative about this. The Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw is an annual event that draws 40,000 people. Due to an epidemic of diarrhea in the local bovine population, a change was necessitated. While the name of the event will stay the same, instead of cow chips, contestants will toss oversized potato chips. While they don’t travel as far (the cow chip record throw is 248 feet) these chips are edible. Finally, Miss Nude World now will require that all contestants be fully clothed. The winner will appear as the centerfold in the Wall Street Journal. Y

TO THE POINT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Four Tips to Positivity BY CRAIG HALEY WE HAVE READ A THOUSAND DIFFERENT TIMES, IN A THOUSAND DIFFERENT PLACES, THAT IT’S BETTER TO BE POSITIVE THAN NEGATIVE. WE KNOW THAT YOU WILL GO further in life with a positive attitude than a negative one. With that said, how do we cultivate and maintain a positive attitude? That is the missing piece of the puzzle. I have to laugh because there are some people I come into contact with that are never having a good day. I’ll ask them how they are, and what comes out is a laundry list of what’s wrong, why they are tired, how bad traffic is, how hot it is outside, etc. Blah! Blah! HERE IS A KEY NOTE: Positive attitude has nothing to do with what happens to you. It’s what you do with, and how you react to, what happens to you. Understanding this truth is what will help you have an incredible attitude and feel good all day long. It starts with you. REMEMBER THIS:
It takes twice as much energy to be negative as it does to be positive. That’s why you may be tired at the end of an argument. So here are some strategies to get and maintain a positive attitude all day, every day! 1. Change your input to change your attitude. You need massive exposure to positive and inspiring material. Guess what? The local news isn’t it! This can be reading a positive book, listening to an inspiring podcast, or hanging out with a positive person. You have to surround yourself with positive and block out the negative. KEY ACTION – Spend the first 15 minutes of your day taking in something positive and watch what happens to your attitude all day long. 2. Don’t dwell or whine about challenges – focus on solutions. Focusing on problems is a negative action. Telling others about your problems is worse! I once heard that a majority of people

don’t care about your problems, and a small percentage of people are glad they are happening to you and not them! Ouch. Instead, focus on what you can control. Focus on what you can do about the challenge. Napoleon Hill said in his timeless classic, “Think and Grow Rich,” within every challenge is an equal or greater opportunity. If you are a positive person, you will find that opportunity and capitalize on it. 3. Forgive and move on. We all have had some people do wrong by us. Some were rude, inconsiderate, and mean. Someone may have stolen from you. Someone may have cheated on you. Whatever they did, do what Elsa said to do in “Frozen.” LET IT GO! You don’t have to forget what they did, but you should forgive. If anything, forgive them for yourself so you don’t walk around with the hatred and bitterness. It will destroy you. And this goes without saying...but don’t let them do the same thing to you again. 4. Failure is an event, not a person. The failure is an “it,” not a person. We all fail, stumble and mess up. We take the wrong action, or we take no action. We say the wrong thing when we should shut up, or we don’t say anything when we should speak up. Figure it out and move on. By doing this, you are “failing forward.” At least you are learning from your mistake. Napoleon Hill says that the most successful people are quick decision makers. This is true because they decide and act. If it was the right decision, they keep going. If it was the wrong one, they stop, make a correction, and move on. What do most people do when it comes to a big, important decision? They procrastinate making the decision and end up doing nothing. So, nothing gets better, they don’t achieve anything, and then they get mad at themselves. Who cares if you mess up? Just get moving! Now some of you might be saying, “Well, everyone will see that I failed and think less of me or laugh at me.” You are right. That could happen, but look at it this way...at least they won’t be bored, and you don’t have to listen to them complain about that. You see, be positive! TO THE POINT LEGAL MATTERS
Enhanced Life Estate Deed: Is It Safe? BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO AVOID PROBATE ON YOUR HOME WHEN YOU DIE. IF YOU ARE SINGLE, THERE WILL BE PROBATE WHEN YOU DIE UNLESS YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THE following options. If you are married and own your home together, your surviving spouse will not have probate; however, there will be probate when the second of you passes away, unless one of these options is done. Let us assume that you own your home jointly with your spouse and that you have two children. Both of you desire to have your two children inherit your home equally when you both pass away. The first option would be to add the names of your two children to the deed as joint tenants with right of survivorship. This is not a good idea. It would affect your ability to claim your full homestead exemption. In addition, you lose control of your property and can only sell it if your children both agree and sign all closing documents. If you wanted to take one of the children off the deed, you would be unable to do so. If one of your children files for bankruptcy, has an adverse judgment or files for divorce, your property could be subject to liens or other legal action. Therefore, I recommend against a deed with your children as joint tenants with right of survivorship. The second option is a life estate deed. There are two types of life estate deed: regular and enhanced (also referred to as Lady Bird). The regular life estate deed requires that your children join in any sale or other changes on the deed; therefore, you have lost control and cannot take your child’s name off the deed if you choose to do so. The enhanced life estate deed gives you the sole right to sell the property during your lifetime or make any other changes to the deed without the permission of your child. You are entitled to keep your homestead exemption. The enhanced life estate deed has very specific legal language in order to be effective; therefore, do not attempt to do this on your own. Even with the enhanced life estate deed, there are risks, particularly if your child has a bankruptcy, outstanding judgment or undergoes divorce. The worst risk, however, is if, God forbid, your child dies before you or with you in a common accident. Your child’s estate would then become the owner of the property once
42

you died, which would result in probate being required. Thus, the main purpose of the life estate deed is not accomplished. The best way to avoid probate on your home is to do a revocable living trust. When you sign the revocable living trust agreement, you also sign a deed transferring the property to you as trustees of your trust. You are able to keep your homestead exemption, maintain complete control of the property during your lifetime and make amendments to your trust without changing the deed. There are no risks involved, since your children’s names do not appear on the deed. The only disadvantage of the revocable living trust is that it will cost more money in attorney’s fees. When you discuss the options with your attorney, you should discuss the difference in fees between the revocable living trust and the enhanced life estate deed. You can then determine whether it is worth saving the money and taking the risks involved in the enhanced life estate deed. TO THE POINT GET INVOLVED
Volunteering right in our own hometown BY JULIE RADLAUER-DOERFLER YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO FAR TO VOLUNTEER THESE DAYS. THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES RIGHT HERE IN LIGHTHOUSE POINT. HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS: “The recreation department is always looking for volunteers to coach sports, you don’t even need to have children on the team — just knowledge and love of the sport,” said Becky Lysengen, Director of Recreation for the City of Lighthouse Point. “We are looking for former athletes and even empty-nesters to get involved.” If you go on the City of Lighthouse Point website, there are options on how to get involved. One avenue is to COACH A SPORTS TEAM. The city is always in need of adult volunteers to help with sports leagues. They are looking for individuals who can commit two or three days a week for the eight-week season to coach youth sports teams. The city will provide team equipment and technical support. The following team sports opportunities are available: • start smart soccer: ages 3 – 4 • co-ed instructional soccer: age 5 – grade 1 • co-ed soccer: grades 2 – 4 • co-ed flag football: grades 5 – 8 • modified coach pitch baseball: grades 2 – 4 • modified coach pitch softball: grades 3 – 5 • kid pitch baseball: grades 5 – 8 • kid pitch softball: grades 6 – 10 Another way to get involved is to SPONSOR A SPORTS TEAM. The recreation department has a $300+ sponsorship program that allows your business to have a 3-foot by 5-foot banner displayed at city parks during the sports season. There are volunteer opportunities for students as well. Within the recreation department there are INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES for college students in sports management, recreation management or
even the hospitality industry. For high school students looking for service hours, the coaches always need support for the teams, especially those with younger players. High school students also provide much needed support at the City of Lighthouse Point’s summer recreation program, which has more than 140 participants on some days. Additionally, there are EVENTS throughout the year in need of volunteers. This past year marked the first annual LHP 5K, and volunteer opportunities included guiding the path and passing out water. The run was held during Keeper Days. It is anticipated that even more volunteers will be needed next year. Speaking of Keeper Days, the Sunday sports event is always an opportunity for teens to earn volunteer hours helping younger children. Add on to this Lighthouse A Glow, the Halloween in the Park event and the annual Easter Egg Hunt, all of which need volunteers. Many of the above-mentioned opportunities can be for either individuals or groups. Other group opportunities include clean up and gardening events, or even groups keeping up with the fields. Finally, there is the opportunity to volunteer on a CITY BOARD, which provides citizens an opportunity to help shape policy in Lighthouse Point. Residents are invited to complete an application for a position on a city board or committee. If you are interested, contact the city clerk for an application. The following boards/ committees are available: • Community appearance • Keeper Days committees board • Planning and zoning board • Marine advisory board • Recreation/cultural arts • Personnel appeals board committee • Tennis advisory committee • Code enforcement board • Library advisory board These are just some of the volunteer opportunities available within the City of Lighthouse Point. If you are interested in coaching, volunteering or sponsorship please call 954-784-3439 or email lhprec@lighthousepoint.com. Happy volunteering!

Abbott & Costello Revisited BY WENDELL ABERN
FLYING PEACHES AND A SUMMER OF ODD JOBS DEAR READERS, In the 30s and 40s, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were the top two comedians in the country. In 1951, my friend Dennis and I outdid them. I had talked him into spending the summer with me, working our way around the east. It was a different world in 1951. A simpler world. A safer world. Dennis and I left Chicago in late June in an old beat-up Chevrolet with a full tank of gas and $27 between us.. We slept in the car most of the time, and we did find jobs. Beer vendors at the Cleveland Indians baseball park; waiters at a rundown restaurant in Erie, Pennsylvania; pot-scrubbers at a hotel restaurant in Lake Placid, New York; caddies at a posh country club in a Philadelphia suburb. And other jobs for which we were completely unqualified. But the highlights (lowlights?) of our trip occurred in Syracuse, New York and Paterson, New Jersey. Syracuse Abbott and Costello would have been proud. We limped into Syracuse with our last eight dollars. After rejections at two restaurants and a hotel, we tried the YMCA. “What can I getchoo guys?” the grill man asked. I said, “We were wondering if you might be looking for help.” Chuck’s eyes lit up as he stirred two bubbling eggs. “You boys ever work a grill?” he asked. Vigorously, I shook my head no. But Dennis said, “Of course. We’re makin’ our way through college workin’ a grill just like this.” Chuck turned into a whirlwind with a pair of tongs, a spatula, a wooden spoon and a huge knife, delivering breakfast to his customer in less than thirty seconds. He was “poetry in motion.” “Dennis whispered, “He’s like a magician out there!” Chuck made lumberjack breakfasts for us while spelling out what we’d be doing for the next week. “Grill opens at 6am,” he said. “One a you works from six ‘til eleven. The other takes over and works ‘til five. Then you both work ‘til 10pm. My other grill men, Eugene and Phil, will help. You get minimum wage, 72 cents an hour each, plus tips. Ya wanna sleep in the back on cots, it’s free. Tell ‘em I said so. Eat whatever ya want. I’ll be gone a week. Then you guys cut out again.” The next day, Dennis was working the 6am shift with Eugene, who woke me at 6:10am. “It’s a madhouse!” Eugene yelled. “You gotta come help!” When I arrived at the grill, it was standing room only, and customers were screaming epithets. Dennis had spilled an entire pot of coffee on the grill. Everyone was yelling. Everyone was

hungry. Everyone was in a hurry. By 8:30, mercifully, everyone had gone to work. Dennis was wiping the counter while I mopped. “You guys ain’t never had any ‘sperience, have ya?” Eugene asked. “I used to make A re-enactment of the infamous 1951 Peach War. toast for my little Photo by Karen Gonzalez. sister,” Dennis said. Wonderful. Eugene was supposed to leave at nine; to his credit, he stayed an extra hour to show us a few short-order-cook basics. By the end of the week, we were even getting tips instead of curses. And eating enough to feed Romania. Chuck returned on Saturday. He said, “We’re dockin’ ya for two pots o’ spilled coffee, four broken dishes, a stopped-up dishwasher, and two dozen eggs thatcha kept oozin’ down the grease gutter. Comes ta just about twenty-five bucks. Take that from the sixty-nine thatcha earned, we’ll round it out at forty-four bucks even.” Then he smiled and said, “Go upstairs. Ask Alice for your check.” Alice gave us a check for sixty-nine dollars and change. Chuck was just giving us a hard time! We were rich! Sixty-nine dollars! That night, we blew half of it on two fairly clean rooms at a sleepy motel. Paterson, New Jersey It was late July and harvesting month in New Jersey. We stopped at Wilson & Son’s in Paterson. There was an old man with a tan face and a belly draped over his jeans. Mr. Wilson the elder, I assumed. Barking at his employees. “Whatchoo boys want?” he said, finally spying us. “Do you need any experienced pickers?” Dennis asked. Experienced, yet. I almost kicked him. “No, I need packers. Now. Right now. I pay more than the minimum, ninety cents an hour. You boys ready to start in five minutes?” He assigned us to two long conveyor belts, stretching to the windows outside, where the pickers were setting down peaches. Gently. The packers, all Hispanic, were plucking peaches >>>

placing them in baskets. When their baskets were full, they hefted them over to a fork-lift truck. We began packing our baskets. After only two hours, our backs hurt — but, we lasted until five. We hobbled over to Mr. Wilson and his son. “Whatchoo boys want now?” I said, “We’d like to get paid.” “Both Wilsons: “What!” “We worked eight hours,” Dennis said. “Seven dollars and twenty cents each. We’d like to get paid.” Wilson the elder grunted and said, “You get paid at the end of the month, like everyone else.” “Dennis shouted. “But we worked eight hours!” “Aw, you worked eight hours,” the old man said. “Yesterday, we worked until one in the morning. Now get back to your stations or leave.” Dennis said, “That’s not fair! We want to get paid now. I don’t see why you have to be such a louse about it.” “Is that right?” the old man shouted. Wilson the younger yelled, “Dad, don’t!” as the old man picked up an empty peach basket and hurled it at Dennis. Dennis ducked, picked up the basket and threw it back. The old man ducked, picked up the basket and flung it back, yelling, “No one calls me a louse!” Everybody heard the ruckus and stopped to listen. Peaches were pouring down the conveyor belts and onto the floor as Dennis and the old man continued hurling baskets. Then, Mr. Wilson slipped on a peach and landed awkwardly on his back. Wilson the Younger picked up his father and dragged him into a small office, yelling at the packers, “Pick up those peaches!” And then to us, “I’m calling the cops!” Good, I thought. The police came and we all started talking at once. Then, Dennis and I were “escorted” outside by two cops. The lieutenant poked his head out of the door and asked, “How old you boys?” We told him: eighteen and seventeen. He closed the door. We waited ten more minutes. The lieutenant came out and said. “I got your money.” I blinked. Dennis shrugged. “Seventeen’s a minor in this state,” he said. “Assault on a minor’s pretty serious in New Jersey. Take your money and leave.” The cop counted out our money, then turned to me and said, “You boys ever come to Paterson, New Jersey again, don’t stop. Just drive right on through.” We left in a hurry and never returned. But since that trip, I’ve had a soft spot for ballpark vendors, field workers, short order cooks, dishwashers, and anyone who works for minimum wage. Y

Chardonnay Extravaganza BY DAVID EHRENFRIED MAYBE YOU REMEMBER MY FIRST COLUMN’S REFERENCE TO DUKE ELLINGTON’S ADAGE ABOUT MUSIC: “IF IT SOUNDS GOOD, IT IS GOOD.” OF COURSE, not all music we enjoy sounds alike or affects us the same way. Even favorite songs performed by different singers or arranged differently can please us or not. Similarly, the same type of grape can make diverse
wines when grown in different places or made with different methods. My June column suggested tasting at least three recent vintage Chardonnay wines in the $10-$30 range from three

regions: California’s Sonoma or Central Coast counties, Burgundy in France, and Chile. Same song, so to speak; different performers and arrangements. The wines I tasted were Viña San Pedro Vineyard 1865 Single Vineyard Chardonnay (vintage 2014) from Chile; from California, Hess Select Monterrey County Chardonnay (2016), Walt Sonoma Coast Chardonnay (2015), and Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay (2016) containing a blend of grapes from Santa Barbara and Monterrey counties; and from France, Jean-Marc Brocard Domaine Sainte Clair Chablis (2016) and Denis Pommier Chablis Premium Cru-Troesmes (2015). Most were available in good wine stores. I thought all these Chardonnays were quality wines and good values. Importantly, they were fun to drink and demonstrated some of the unique styles and flavors of this popular grape. Hopefully, you had the same experience if you did the tasting, though likely with different wines than I bought. Perhaps you found a new version of a favorite song you didn’t know you’d like or a new favorite altogether. The Chilean wine surprised and impressed me. Viña San Pedro’s 1865 Chardonnay was only about $15 a bottle and had many of the characteristics I like in Chardonnay wine. It had an appetizing golden yellow color and grapefruit, peach and apple flavors along with nutty flavors from aging in oak. It was crisp, a bit tart, nectar-like, and nicely balanced — that is, the wine’s scents, tastes and smooth texture came together nicely. Really tasty, it complemented an assortment of cheeses and a barbecued chicken dinner. Hess and Kendall-Jackson wines are familiar California wine producers that make wines at reasonable prices. The Walt Chardonnay is from a smaller winery connected with Hall Napa Valley, a large producer of premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines. At about $10 a bottle, Hess’s Select Chardonnay is a basic inexpensive Chardonnay. It had pear, green apple and light oak flavors with a matching color of light yellow with a greenish hue. It was dry, crisp, >>>

<<< straightforward and enjoyable — for the money, a good “everyday” kind of wine. The Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve is higher up the scale of K-J’s wines but still a bargain at about $16 or so a bottle. It’s a light yellow, medium weight wine with scents of pears, mangoes and lemons along with oak and, some say, vanilla. It’s crisp but also smooth and silky. It’s more complex than the Hess, nicely balanced, and should go well with many foods. There are, by the way, many good, modestly priced California Chardonnays from other producers, such as La Crema, LaFond, Rodney Strong and Bernardus, among others. There are dozens of more expensive California Chardonnays, the best of which can be profoundly delicious — some lush with rich fruit flavors and others refined, sleek and elegant. The Walt Chardonnay cost more (about $26-30) and didn’t disappoint. It was golden yellow, silky and delicious with layers of apricot, nectarine and citrus >>>
Your Wine Assignment Next we’ll try two different kinds of Italian wines that show the modern versatility of the Sangiovese grapes grown in Tuscany. The first is Chianti, an old stand-by made almost entirely from Sangiovese grapes. The other is Toscana Rosso, sort of a catch-all for Tuscan red wines that typically blend Sangeovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or other wines. Chianti vintners developed Toscana Rosso several decades ago in an effort to make better, more interesting wines. Fortunately for us, they managed to improve both types of wines dramatically. I suggest buying 2012-2015 vintage wines in the $15-$40 range. Look for Chianti labels that say Classico, Riserva or Rufina. There are many quality producers, such as Monsanto, Volpaia, Gabbiano, Castello di’Ama, Felsina, Carpineta, Badi a Coltibuono and Ricasoli. There are many reasonably priced Tuscan blends, as well as some very expensive ones. Some Toscana Rosso labels to look for include most names above and: Ampeleia, Antinori, Argiano, Avignonesi, Frassinello, Le Macchiole and Mocali, among others. Drink at cool room temperatures. (Refrigerate 10 or 20 minutes or they seem too warm.) Remember to swirl the wines in your glass before tasting and jot down key characteristics, looking for differences in color, scents, weight, acidity, fruit and other flavors. These wines are tailor-made for northern and southern Italian dishes as well as many other foods.
Let me know what you think of the wines you taste. Send your comments and photos (if you have any) to editor@pointpubs.com.

<<< flavors. Its tastes lingered pleasantly. It went great with a dinner of southwestern tamales and salad, but could be enjoyed with other foods or just by itself. For a Burgundy, I chose Chablis, because it has a unique profile that’s not what you expect if the Chardonnay wine you’re used to is mainly from California. Also, Chablis is available and affordable in good wine stores, and it drinks well with lighter and some spicy foods, especially fish and shellfish, including sushi. Chablis wines are made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, not unlike their Californian and Chilean counterparts. However, grapes for Chablis are grown in chalky soils in the coolest, northernmost part of Burgundy. Chablis is usually made in steel tanks with little or no exposure to new oak. As a result, Chablis is usually light, citrusy and bracingly crisp. It also has the mineral or earthy accents found in many Burgundy whites. Basic Chablis wines don’t have the toasty, smoky hints or “buttery” feel common to many Californian and Chilean Chardonnay wines that have extended contact with new oak. Good Chablis wines enable us to taste Chardonnay wine in a pure and elegant way — like listening to a favorite tune performed simply and enjoyably without much embellishment. The two Chablis wines I tried were like that: delightful, direct, refreshing and interesting. Sainte Claire, in the $17-20 range, is the least expensive of Brocard’s Chablis wines. It was pale yellow and had lemon and lime scents. It tasted crisp and bracing with a beam of lemon-lime along with apple and light honey flavors. No trace of oak…just unadorned Chablis magic at a great price, Some other Chablis names in this category are Fevre, Jadot, Moreau and Pascal Bouchard. I was unfamiliar with the Pommier Chablis and bought it for its price point — about $25-30 — and its Premier Cru status, meaning the wine’s grapes came from a specially designated Chablis area with higher quality grape vines. There also are even higher quality vineyards in Chablis designated Grand Cru whose grapes make very expensive Chablis wines. The Pommier, like many Premier Cru Chablis, was aged briefly with new oak, giving it more texture and pronounced fruit flavors than the Brocard. Tart and racy, this wine was a real pleasure to drink. In the next column of Enjoying Wine, I’ll talk about the tasting of Pinot Noir wines proposed in my July column. There’s still time to send comments on the California, Oregon and French Burgundy wines you taste. Y Let me know what you think of the wines you tasted. Submit comments to editor@pointpubs.com.

Thai Street Food MY NIGHT AS A CULINARY STUDENT
BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU THERE IS A COMICAL MEME OUT THERE THAT CAPTURES MY RECENT CULINARY SPIRIT WELL. A FEW SMALL PIECES OF TOAST ARE CUT INTO dainty triangles and artistically arranged into modern geometric structures on a clean white plate. Three delicate paint strokes of peanut butter adorn the side of the plate, and a few carefully constructed spheres of raspberry jelly dot the empty space making the plate look like a contemporary, abstract canvas. The dish, which I would fancifully call a “deconstructed peanut butter and jelly”

looks like a culinary masterpiece fit for a fine-dining establishment. The meme reads: “Me after watching 15 minutes of ‘Masterchef.’” I laughed out loud the second I saw the picture in my message stream. My boyfriend (well aware of my recent addiction to watching “Top Chef,” “Masterchef” and “Chopped”), sent it to me. He too has been a little obsessed lately with reality cooking shows. We love the pace — the energy and creativity packed into an hour — the mystery box challenges and strange ingredients — the imaginative dishes and judge’s harsh critiques. We chime in with our own critical comments as if we were established New York Times food critics. Though inspired, neither of us really know how to cook. We are left living vicariously through those masterful chefs on television. It wasn’t until recently that we decided to take our newfound interest in cooking to the next level. We scheduled a class at Sur la Table — a cooking store in Mizner Park that has a full teaching kitchen with a packed schedule of classes. There’s savory classes, such as: “Thai Street Food,” “Secrets of Paella,” “Weeknight Dinners,” “Perfect French Crepes,” “SteakhouseStyle Burgers” and “Spanish Tapas.” Then there’s the sweet, such as “No-Churn Ice Cream” and “Bakeshop Fundamentals.” There’s classes for teens, children, wine lovers and a ladies night out. We chose “Thai Street Food” because A) I love Thai food; and B) the one time I attempted to cook a Thai-style curry, I failed miserably, leaving a gigantic pot of pasty, spicy, inedible gunk. To my credit, I tried hard. I added a little of this, a little of that, more kick, a splash of that, and, before I knew it, had concocted something that could feed a family of ten (if only it was edible). At Sur la Table, under the professional instruction of Chef Jerimiah Liburidi, I figured I could have a bit more success. We attended class at 7pm on a Friday night. Upon >>>

At Sur la Table, you cook in groups of four, so we were paired with one other couple. The ingredients were each pre-measured and delivered as-needed by Liburidi’s friendly assistant. Liburidi cooks up front, with a huge mirror overhead so all his students can see his crafty skill. Liburidi made the class fun — charismatically teaching us cutting techniques, cookery and food knowledge, while sharing stories about his two decades in the restaurant industry as a professional chef. In his time in kitchens, he worked in restaurants owned by Angela Hartnett, Gordon Ramsay, Daniel Boulud, Michela Larson and Roy Yamaguchi. He started working in small kitchens doing the grunt work (a step he said is critical for aspiring chefs) before attending Florida Culinary Institute in 2001 and moving up into the fine-dining leagues. He was born in Incheon South Korea and raised as an “army brat” for the first 16 years of his life, during which time he was exposed to a wealth of international cuisines. Chef Liburidi guided us through the various steps of preparing three dishes: a spicy green
Thai was scrumptious — with wok-seared tofu, bean sprouts and scrambled egg tossed in a homemade sauce with soy sauce, white vinegar, fish sauce, Thai tamarind concentrate, sriracha, brown sugar and garlic powder. Throughout the process, I learned to use some new tools, including a mortar and pestle (to grind down garlic with dried shrimp and Thai chilies), a sharp mandolin (to julienne the green papaya), and my personal favorite, an awesome little garlic peeler (simply a rubber tube in which you roll garlic gloves to remove their skin). By the time the class was over, I was ready to spend my month’s paycheck on gadgets from the Sur la Table store (which I’m sure is the point). I also learned some interesting food knowledge. Did you know that the reason you use different types of oil for different recipes is because their smoke temperatures are different? For high temperature cooking situations (such as in a wok or cast iron skillet) you want an oil with a high smoke point, such as Canola (with a smoke point of 400 degrees Fahrenheit), not an extra virgin olive oil (with a much lower smoke point of 350). Chef Liburidi recommends grapeseed oil because it is completely tasteless and has a smoke point of 420 degrees Fahrenheit. Did you know that the reason a wok is curved is so that you can move food up onto the sides in order to let the

Some of the ingredients were exotic — dehydrated shrimp, fish sauce, sweet preserved radish — while others were commonplace — roasted peanuts, green onions, lime. Somehow they all came together to create bold, invigorating flavors. The three dishes we made were the best (and probably most authentic) Thai food I have ever eaten in South Florida. The green papaya salad, which I had expected to be somewhat boring or bland, was fantastic — sweet, spicy and refreshing. The julienned green papaya, green beans, cherry tomatoes and brown sugar gave it freshness, while some Thai chilies and minced garlic packed a serious punch. The secret to the chicken satay was thinly slicing the chicken and coating it in a coconut curry sauce before weaving it onto skewers and charring it on a hot grill. We made a homemade peanut sauce with coconut milk, ginger, garlic, peanuts, fish sauce and Thai tamarind concentrate for dipping. The pad

oil re-heat in the bottom of the wok? This way, you are always moving your ingredients into extra-hot oil, not oil that has been cooled by the ingredients. Did you know never to rinse chicken? The water, Chef Liburidi said, not only contaminates your sink, but also coats the chicken in minerals and sulphates that affect the taste and cook of the chicken. These were just a few food knowledge gems I learned while cooking at Sur la Table. While I can’t say I’m ready to go compete on “Masterchef,” I can say I now feel completely capable of cooking a few Thai dishes at home. My boyfriend might disagree, but we shall see. I look forward to going back to Sur la Table again to expand my repertoire. Y Sur la Table is located at 438 Plaza Real in Mizner Park in Boca Raton. The class schedule is online at surlatable. com. Imagine flipping through a gallery of photos of the fish that were caught there before, and the happy anglers who caught them. Imagine, at the end of your fishing excursion, sharing your own photos and memories, adding to a database of catches made around the globe and personally logging all of your own fishing adventures in one place. The Fish Angler app can do all this. The app, which was created by a Lighthouse Point couple, Tom and Jane Wye, currently has approximately 270,000 users in the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Indonesia. The app crowdsources data through an active social network of global anglers and, based on each angler’s geolocation, automatically incorporates data feeds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and worldwide weather. The app currently contains a database of more than 32,000 fish species, with intricate profiles for each. Users can click on a specific species and see where it has been caught. The app also serves as a logbook and social profile for fishing enthusiasts. In addition to the public aspect of the app, Fish Angler is in the testing phases of

This means angler clubs, retail stores, fishing tournaments and other private groups will soon be able to use the app to track their own group’s catches, photos and data. The group functionality is projected to be live in the next month. Tom said he also hopes to incorporate fishing regulations based on geolocation, so anglers will be able to know the rules of the water from which they fish at all times.
useful to researchers, conservationists, fish and game departments and educational organizations. The applications seem endless. “I think we are creating a unique platform that brings in a lot of data,” said Tom. “Fishing is very technical in the bottom line. patterns — we’re trying to bring it all together. In the end we want to be able to allow a user an educational experience. We want to improve the experience and actually grow the industry.” The Wyes have also been working toward incorporating something they playfully call “fish-ial recognition.” This function would basically use facial recognition software to identify fish
from a photograph. Anglers could take a picture of their catch and run it through the app’s “fish-ail recognition” system to find out the exact species of the fish. Though this feature has not yet been incorporated into the app, it was the initial inspiration behind starting the app. The Wyes — who moved to Lighthouse Point five years ago after selling their business, Bay Area Internet Solutions (BAIS), to Facebook — were enjoying retirement in the sunshine state. They had bought a luxurious home on the Intracoastal and a boat, expecting to embrace retired life. One day while fishing Jane caught a nice fish and asked Tom what kind it was, to which Tom replied: “I have no idea.” “He tossed me an encyclopedia of fish, five hundred pages that I would have to leaf through and hope to find a picture that matched what I was holding in my hands,” Jane recalled. “I looked at him and said, ‘No way, Tom. We’re from Silicon Valley. We can do better than this.’” The idea — a fish recognition app — was the springboard from which the Fish Angler app catapulted. The Wyes, who both have backgrounds in data technology and have been working together since the first time they met (first interning at a data center while pursuing degrees in management information
systems at then-New Hampshire College; then growing BAIS, a data server farm business, for over 18 years) have been the perfect pair to materialize the Fish Angler vision. The app has since morphed into a much more robust, data-driven, social

Jane also loves the more personal part of Fish Angler — how the app serves as a digital scrapbook for families and friends, memorializing their beautiful moments together on the water.

It’s their first catch ever, or a beautiful day on vacation, or a memory shared with a grandchild… its fun. Now I’m back to twelve hours.” The Wyes said their hard work is starting to pay off. They recently won a $15,000 award featured in American Scientific for the XPRIZE Ocean Initiative’s challenge to “turn data into much needed ocean services.” Jane said the organic way the app has spread around the world has also been extremely rewarding to witness. “It’s so exciting to wake up and see that someone in Indonesia has logged a catch,” Jane said. “We can’t wait to see how this app grows.” Y The Fish Angler app is free and can be downloaded on both iOS and Android systems, as well as accessed through the Fish Angler website, fishangler.com.

In November 2017, Aspire Real Estate Development announced plans to develop Arya Oceanside Residences, a boutique condominium complex situated strategically between the Intracoastal and ocean. The development — which is walking distance from Pompano Beach’s trendy new Beach House Restaurant, the new fishing pier, Pompano Beach water taxi and future Fishing Village oceanfront shops — is in a prime location. “We have procured a great location and are introducing a very competitive price point for this area,” said Sean Lin, principal, Aspire Real Estate. “Arya is a collaboration of very respected names in the industry that will ensure this project not only reflects the new vision of Pompano Beach as it undergoes a renewal, but also offers a quality, valueoriented investment for buyers.” The Arya will house 19 two-bedroom, plus den units in seven stories. Pricing will start from under $650,000. The internationally renowned IDEA Architecture + Engineering has designed Arya’s contemporary-style building, featuring an abundance of crisp white, a decidedly tranquil ambiance and green space. The esteemed Interiors by Steven G. designed the common areas. Thoughtful building features include an expansive rooftop garden with outdoor
kitchen for entertaining; a relaxation room and fitness center; a spacious pool; private storage units; bike racks, and Wi-Fi in common areas. There will be 24-hour security as well as assigned parking in a secured garage with spots pre-wired for electrical charging stations. Condominium units will range from 1,450 to 1,657 square feet and will feature clean, crisp interiors with nine-foot ceiling heights; ocean and Intracoastal views from floorto-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors; contemporary kitchens and bath cabinets with quartz countertops; stainless steel Bosch appliances; smart home packages; and laundry rooms with washers and dryers. End units will include wrap-around balconies with glass railings. The building will also be pet-friendly. “We hope to help establish a new energy here,” said Lin in a press release. “Pompano Beach will mirror what happened in Sunny Isles and Fort Lauderdale, cities that are walkable, beach-oriented and conveniently located.” Arya’s sales center opened at 124 N Ocean Blvd. in December with The Keyes Company acting as exclusive sales agent. Groundbreaking of the building took place in March and completion is anticipated in the spring of 2020.

n DOWNTOWN MILLENNIAL
Old Town Square LOCATION: NE Third St., between First and Second Avenues in Pompano Beach’s old town area, near the planned Innovation District designated by the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). SUMMARY: Ten stories; approximately 280 apartments, 6,000 square feet of first floor, corner retail space (envisioned as a restaurant) and 6,000 square feet of amenities; approximate average rent of $1,700/month TARGET MARKET: Millennials PROJECTED OPENING DATE: Approximately the second half of 2020 CONTACT: 954-566-7400 | cavacheproperties.com
Old Town Square will be a mixed-use, ten-story building with approximately 280 apartments, 6,000 square feet of amenities and 6,000 square feet of retail space. The building will be located on NE Third St., between First and Second Avenues in Pompano Beach’s old downtown area, near the city’s planned Innovation District. Site plans for the project were approved by the City of Pompano Beach at the end of 2017. Adam Adache, the managing partner of Cavache Properties, LLC. (the developer behind the project) said he has been following the development of Old Town Pompano and believes in the city’s vision to develop the area into a hip, walkable downtown. “I like everything that’s happening in the area,” he said. “I believe that the City has been on its way up and is continuing on the same course.” The area — which currently is home to
66

Bailey Contemporary Arts, Blooming Bean Coffee shop and Odd Breed Wild Ales — is slated to have a number of additional restaurants, entertainment venues and bars in the coming years. With Old Town Square’s close proximity to I-95 and the beach, plus recent talk of a new commuter train station nearby, Adache hopes the area will develop into a great place for young, working professionals to both live and play. “Whether they work locally, in Ft. Lauderdale or even West Palm, it’s a good place to be,” he said. “We found it to be a great place for an apartment project that targets Millennials.” Adache said Old Town Square will consist of smaller, more efficient units to allow Millennials to live in a trendy area at a lower cost. The apartments will range in size from approximately 480 square feet for studios, to 863 square feet for two-bedroom apartments. Adache predicts the rent will
average around $1,700 a month. Old Town Square will also have a gym, clubhouse, pool and whirlpool spa. Adache envisions leasing the 6,000 square feet of retail space — located on the corner of the first floor — to a restaurant. “We will be very selective as to who we lease it to because we feel it’s going to be extremely important for the neighborhood, and extremely important for the project,” Adache said. “I think our project will be perfect for everything the CRA is doing.” If an appropriate restaurant doesn’t lease the space, Adache said the retail space can be split into multiple, smaller retail spaces. Now that site plans have been approved, Cavache Properties is working on construction documents and permits. Once those are approved and the project breaks ground, Adache predicts the project will take about 18 months to complete.

LOCATION: Located at the intersection of NE Fourth St. and Federal Hwy. (a few blocks north of Atlantic Blvd.) SUMMARY: Eight stories; 144 units; apartments ranging from 787 to 1,436 square feet; rents range between $1692 and $2657 a month. Stuart I. Meyers, Chairman and CEO of the Meyers Group, is one of the brains behind Avery Pompano Beach, a new apartment project on Federal Blvd. Meyers said the idea behind Avery Pompano Beach is to create an upscale community with resort-style amenities and smart-home technology. The tech-savvy units will be equipped with video chat (so residents can chat with visitors before letting them in), remote home controls (allowing residents to control things like their thermostat from their cell phone), keyless entry, USB chargers, energy-efficient appliances and electric car charging stations. As for amenities, Avery Pompano Beach will feature a fitness center, yoga studio, theater room, conference room, business center, billiards room, and second floor party room with an expansive terrace. Outdoor, tropical landscaping will surround the pool, waterfall and fire pit. Concierge services — such as dog-walking, valet parking, doorside trash pickup and 24-hour security
— will be available at Avery Pompano Beach. The building, which will have a formal, hotel-style lobby, has been designed by Salazar Architectural Group. Along with working professionals, Meyers said Avery Pompano Beach is also targeting empty-nesters.
“Avery Pompano Beach is for people who don’t want to have the burden of a house and homeownership,” he said. “Especially people who are bound to travel a lot. I think they will find it a very welcoming place.” Residents can choose from a collection of one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging from 787 to 1,436 square feet. The average rent is projected to be between $1,692 to $2,657 a month. Upper floors have views of the Pompano Beach municipal golf course and community park. Avery Pompano Beach is about a three minute drive to the beach down Atlantic Blvd. and walking distance to the Pompano Ampitheater and community park, which includes sports fields, an outdoor public pool, playground, BBQ grills and adjacent dog park. Meyers said his company strategically chose Pompano Beach for the Avery because the city has “been an overlooked community for many years.” “We think it’s a gem,” Meyers said. “A lot of people that don’t want to pay the much higher rents in Ft. Lauderdale or Boca Raton can find a place in the sun and get in on the ground floor before it gets really, really hot.” Cito Beguiristain, the Senior Vice President of Planning and Development of the Meyers Group, agreed. “Pompano Beach has definitely experienced a Renaissance in recent years,” he said. “The city has done a really amazing job at bringing in some high-end businesses and restaurants right there on Atlantic Blvd. and between Federal and the beach. We really think this is going to be one of the hot markets in the years to come.”

residences; two penthouse residences with double-height ceilings; private 20,000 square-foot beach; resort amenities; 24hour valet parking. PROJECTED COMPLETION DATE: Approximately end of 2018 CONTACT: Sabbia Beach’s sales gallery is located at 723 N Ocean Blvd. | 954-781-9700 | sabbiabeachcondos.com Developers are calling Sabbia Beach “the first ultra-luxury oceanfront residential development in Pompano Beach.” One of the most luxurious features of Sabbia
Beach is a 20,000 square-foot private beach. Legally speaking the coastline (from the mean high-tide line seaward) cannot be private, but Sabbia Beach has constructed their own beach zone by bringing in sand and building an elevated area privately accessed via a wooden walkway over a dune located between Pompano Beach’s public beach and Sabbia’s pool deck. The private beach is designed by acclaimed landscape architecture firm Arquitectonica GEO. The design includes preserved, indigenous landscaping and a dune with native vegetation. Sabbia will have beach and pool service, lounge chairs, umbrellas, a catering kitchen and pool deck grills, which can be used for private beach events. Other luxurious amenities include an

The building will have 24-hour valet parking at the porte-cochère entrance, charging stations for electric vehicles and a car washing station. Sabbia Beach’s modern interior design is by Interiors by Steven G. By the end of November 2017, Sabbia Beach was already 85 percent sold. Only a 35 percent down payment was required as part of a unique progressive down payment program. Residents will pay no condo fees in the first year of living at the development. “Pompano is becoming the place to be for exciting and upscale dining, shopping and leisure,” said Danny Salvatore, a partner in Fernbrook Florida, LLLP, the developer of Sabbia Beach. “We at Sabbia Beach are pleased to be a part of the ‘new’ Pompano Beach.” Y

Coming Soon A New Gated Townhouse Community in Lighthouse Point BY MARIE PULEO

T
he grassy lot on the southwest corner of NE 23rd Avenue (Lighthouse Drive) and NE 39th Street — two of the city’s main thoroughfares — has stood vacant for five years, but plans are underway for the construction of a 12-unit gated townhouse community. The city’s Planning and Zoning Board approved the site plan for the two-story townhouse project at a special meeting in June. It will be the first new construction of townhouses in Lighthouse Point in 10 years. The developer behind the project is Adam Adache, managing partner of Cavache Properties, based in Pompano Beach. Once the site plan was given the green light, the company was able to close on the sale of the property, paying $1.4 million to J&L Holdings of South Florida LLC, which had owned the land since 2012. Four buildings with four rental units each once occupied the site, but were demolished in March 2013. “We are thrilled to be able to build on the last vacant parcel of this size in Lighthouse Point,” said Adache. Two buildings with six townhouses each will be built on the site, which is just under one acre, and has the address of 3870 NE 22nd Way. Each building will have four three-bedroom units, and two end units with four bedrooms. They will range in size from 2,002 square feet to 2,480 square feet, with prices expected to start at $765,000. According to the site plan, each unit will have large second-story covered balconies and a ground floor patio area with a splash pool. The pools will be situated streetside – in one building they will face Lighthouse Drive, and in the other they will face NE 22nd Way. There will be a privacy wall around the perimeter of the property, as well as between each unit. Each unit will also have a two-car garage to be used for parking only. In addition, there will be five guest parking spaces on site and five on-street parking spaces along NE 22nd Way. The project had originally proposed parallel parking on Lighthouse Drive and NE 39th Street, but the city had concerns about traffic safety and congestion. The entrance to the property will be on NE 22nd Way, and will have an automatic swing gate. An exit with a sliding gate will be on NE 39th Street, where vehicles coming out of the property will be able to make a right turn only, and head toward the traffic light at the Lighthouse Drive intersection.
AUGUST 2018 | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

The project is currently referred to as “Lighthouse Point Townhouses,” but the formal name of the community will be announced by the developer in the coming months. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2020. Before the site plan for the project could be approved, the City Commission had to adopt an ordinance adding two-story townhouses as a “conditional use” in the RM-16 (four-family residential) zoning district where the project is planned. Before the amendment, the code only provided for three-story townhouses as a conditional use. In addition, the project did not fall under the list of “permitted uses” in the RM-16 zoning district because there will be six
units per building, instead of the maximum four units per building allowed by code. The new ordinance set forth the conditional use criteria to be considered by the Planning and Zoning Board when reviewing the project. It also gave the Planning and Zoning Board the authority to waive or modify certain requirements if the merits of the project design warranted it, in order “to encourage innovative and highquality design.” The Board approved waivers to allow: splash pools in the front setback; balconies along more than 60 percent of the front façades, instead of the 40 percent limit; four guest parking spaces to encroach into the side yard along NE 39th Street; three guest parking spaces and an interior driveway to be closer than the required five feet minimum from adjacent property lines and structures; the elimination of raised parking curbs or bumper blocks for guest spaces; and parking spaces located closer to the north property line than the required seven feet of separation. The Board also waived the requirement that

each attached group of townhouses cannot exceed 4 units and 90 feet in length, and that no more than 60 percent of the roof can be of the same height. At the Planning and Zoning Board meeting in June, a representative for Cavache Properties said they have complied with the conditions suggested by the city’s Community Appearance Board (CAB). The developer will be required to follow CAB recommendations for landscaping. The developer will also build and maintain sidewalks on all sides of the property, except the south, which borders on single-family homes. The representative said the Homeowners Association (HOA) documents will state that short-term rentals of less than six months will not be permitted, and that language will be added to allow the city to enforce HOA rules. Adam Adache, who was also at the meeting, said the HOA documents will also state that the balcony use and pool areas must not create a visual blight. The Board placed other conditions on its approval of the site plan, such as no parking in the drive aisles, and owners can only have two cars on the property. In addition, the HOA documents must be approved by the city prior to them being ratified, and any changes relating to the conditions have to come back to the Planning and Zoning Board for review. The conditions will be subject to Code Enforcement action. Bill Gallo, a member of the Planning and Zoning Board, said the project is superior to the submittals that have been presented in the past. Currently, Cavache Properties is also developing Old Town Square, a 279-unit mixed-use apartment complex in Pompano Beach’s historic downtown area, and 30 Thirty North Ocean, a beach condo project under construction in Fort Lauderdale. New townhouse developments have been few and far between in Lighthouse Point. The most recent include the 80-unit Vintage at Lighthouse Point along Federal Highway that was completed in 2008, and an eight-unit development on NE 22nd Way that was completed in 2009. The lack of new townhouses “creates a very high demand for this type of product,” said Adache. Y

ABOUT THE LIONFISH INVASION
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) lionfish are an invasive species detrimental to native marine life that interrupt the fragile marine ecosystem.
82
LIGHTHOUSE POINT
| lhpmag.com
Firstly, lionfish eat native fish. They are stalking predators that often corral prey into a corner, spreading their pectoral fins and using them to “herd” prey. They are the only species known to blow water to get prey to turn toward them before attacking. Lionfish can devour prey that are more than half their own length — their stomachs can expand up to 30 times the normal volume. They are known to prey on more than 70 marine fish and invertebrate species, including yellowtail snapper, Nassau grouper, parrotfish, banded coral shrimp and cleaner species. Left unchecked, lionfish have the potential to eliminate other marine species. These venomous, zebra-stripped fish also compete for food with native predatory fish, such as grouper and snapper, and may negatively impact the overall reef habitat by eliminating organisms that serve important ecological roles such as herbivorous fish that consume algae. Lionfish are native to the warm, tropical waters of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Red Sea. They were first reported off Florida’s Atlantic Coast near Dania Beach in 1985. The FWC does not know for sure how the first release into South Florida waters occurred, but does know that release from ballast water was not likely the culprit. In the 2000s, the species began to be recorded off the Atlantic coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, while reports from Bermuda and Florida continued. Since the mid-2000s, lionfish reports have increased rapidly. As of 2010, lionfish have even been reported along the northern Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola and Apalachicola. Movement of lionfish likely followed currents up the Atlantic Coast, around to the Bahamas and then into the Gulf. Lionfish can also spawn quickly. Females release two gelatinous egg masses of about 12,000 to 15,000 eggs each. These masses float and can drift for about 25 days. Lionfish can spawn every four days in warmer climates. Lionfish have high fidelity to a location, meaning once they find suitable habitat as an adult they tend to stay there, and can reach densities of more than 200 adults per acre. The good news is that lionfish are tasty.
6 Tips for Spearing Lionfish [From the “Lionfish Hunters” at lionfish.co] 1) Time your lionfish hunt close to sunrise and sunset: Lionfish prefer to hunt and feed at twilight. However, if you do go hunting in the daytime, lionfish are often found under ledges where they have a roof over their head and can maintain a low profile until dusk sets. 2) Lionfish prefer artificial structure: Look where there are rubble piles, sunken debris or shipwrecks. 3) Spear the lionfish at an angle into the head: Spearing a lionfish in the head will avoid damaging any of the meat in the fillet and make it easier to insert the fish head first into a safe container, such as a zookeeper. 4) Lionfish love barrel sponges: Lionfish’s preferred food sources like barrel sponges and lionfish like to hide inside them. 5) Check the sandy edges along a reef: Not only are lionfish easy to spot against the white sand, they also like to hang out on the edge of the reef because that’s where the yummy shrimp hang out. 6) Be careful: Lionfish venom is extremely painful. Keep away from their barbs and use a hunting tube to transport fish. Keep in mind that the lionfish venom is only neutralized by heat, so a lionfish can still sting you while on ice in your cooler. Thus, use gloves when grabbing your cold beer in the cooler, or better yet, keep lionfish in a sepparate container.

don’t find many German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel — it’s divine a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

UNSOLICITED ADVICE
The Future Is Bright, More Fish, Fewer Cars BY RICHARD ROSSER THIS MONTH WE PROFILE JANE AND TOM WYE WHO HAVE CREATED AN OUTSTANDING SMARTPHONE APP “FISH ANGLER.” THE SUMMARY IS THAT THE APP HAS THE power to transform recreational fishing around the world. Yes, that is powerful, but also just one of a great many technological advances in our rapidly-changing world. Our daughter went to a presentation from Columbia University a few weeks ago. The presenter was candid with the assembled students and parents. She admitted openly that this elite university knew they were preparing students for jobs that may not even exist today. For example by 2050, it is projected that 85 percent of cars in the USA will be eliminated. That is a huge reduction in the number of cars, the parking spots they require, the garages in homes no longer needed, and the list goes on. The impact on jobs, and every aspect of life, will be immense; and much of it is quite positive. But that is a lot of job changes for millions of people, or career options completely evaporating. Never in my lifetime has so much news been devoted to the coming technological changes to our everyday lives. This news is driven in part by the certainty that the changes will actually transpire. Driverless cars and trucks — ask most anyone and they know they are coming. Flying cars — we have been hearing about those for 50 years but driverless cars, in-home robots, fast-food workers replaced with machines, check-out free grocery stores — all these seem to be seen as certain to become part of our lives. I was fearful for a time about how our country and the world would adapt to these massive changes in employment. I have since come to learn that economies have an amazing way of adjusting, and we are fortunate to be alive during a time of great opportunity. Now — actions at the local, national and international levels will be required to minimize troublesome, sudden shifts in employment patterns. The world improved greatly after the industrial revolution of the late-1800s. But yes, jobs like blacksmiths and street lamp lighters were eliminated en mass. The new technologies of the era vastly increased the need for workers in other areas. The future will likely see the same pattern.

When speaking with the Wyes about their app, we discussed conservation at length. The technological power of their app and its collaborative components from around the world, will eventually allow recreational and commercial fisherman to greatly increase the harvest of fish. Obviously, technological power to conserve our natural resources of all kinds is more important than ever. The need for all of us to balance the needs of today with those of tomorrow, and to balance the exuberance of new opportunities with the need to preserve resources and employment opportunities for future generations, has always been important. Today, even more so. Y
