CREATIVELY SPEAKING

BY SUSAN ROSSER

All Together Now MAINTAINING AN OLD RULE OF ETIQUETTE THE OTHER NIGHT I WAS INVITED TO A FANCY shmancy restaurant to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It was a lovely evening. The company was friendly. The conversation was lively. The food was stupendous. And then it happened. “Can I take that for you?” the waiter asked. I had just one, lone bite of grouper left on my plate. You can’t blame the guy for thinking I was done. And truth be told, I was done. But, my friend and hostess for the evening was sitting right beside me and was still eating her dinner. So I told him “No, I’m still working on this.” I didn’t want my friend to feel rushed.

I’ve noticed that restaurants tend to clear plates as each diner finishes these days. Whereas, in years past, a table was not cleared until everyone had finished their meal. The latter ensured that no one felt rushed or uncomfortable. It also served as a reminder that you were dining as part of a group. When you decide

24

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

to enjoy a meal with friends or family, a certain amount of value must be placed on the simple fact that you’re not alone — there are others to consider. I can’t speak to why this change has occurred. It could be that restaurants need to turn the tables over more quickly to earn a profit. Or perhaps this is what diners demand these days. But I think it’s impolite. If we can’t share a meal without an “every man for himself” attitude, then how can we do anything together? I don’t want to be the voice of doom and gloom. I don’t want to believe that the manner by which restaurants clear tables is indicative of the breakdown of social norms and society in general — but, it’s definitely worth considering. Yes, customs change. Etiquette evolves with the times. Women used to curtsy. Men used to bow. If a man kissed my hand at a party, I’d think he was bonkers. Nowadays, people put their elbows on dinner tables and all eyes don’t turn in horror. But the standard of clearing all plates simultaneously — that’s a custom we should preserve. How and when a table is cleared is not just some arcane formality, such as knowing your water glass is on the right and your bread plate is to the left. It’s a symbol. It’s important. And it’s a message: “Tonight we dine together.” After I started writing this, I Googled “waiters clear plates one at a time” and apparently, I am not the only one bothered by this new norm. Thankfully, this probably isn’t the end of civilization as we know it. The truth is — this has been going on for some time and we’re all still here. But we need to keep an eye on these things. The ties that bind are often small and overlooked.

Pompano Mayor Lamar Fisher Will Run for Broward County Commission

P

ompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher announced on Oct. 4 he will run for the Broward County Commission District 4 seat in the Nov. 6, 2018 election. The seat will be vacated by County Commissioner Chip LaMarca who will be running for state representative in 2018. Two Pompano Beach City Commissioners — Rex Hardin and Michael Sobel — have announced they will run to replace Fisher as mayor. So far, the only challenger Fisher, a Democrat, will face in the County Commission election is former Oakland Park Mayor and City Commissioner Shari McCartney, a Republican. If more candidates enter the race, either, or both, will have to go through a primary election first.

Fisher is currently serving his fourth term as Pompano Beach mayor, which runs through November 2020. He is also the CEO and President of Fisher Auction Company, a real estate auction firm. Whether he wins or loses the Broward County Commission race, he will have to give up his mayoral position in November 2018. “I’m running for the Broward County Commission District 4 seat because I want to bring my extensive

municipal governmental experience, along with my business sense, to Broward County,” said Fisher. “I understand what the needs are for the eight cities within the district and want to represent and fight for their issues at the county level.” Broward County Commission District 4 includes the cities of Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hillsboro Beach, Lighthouse Point, Fort Lauderdale, LauderdaleBy-The-Sea, Sea Ranch Lakes and Oakland Park. Fisher said he wants to focus on: beach renourishment; finding viable alternatives to ease traffic congestion, such as innovative technology, trolleys and shared-ride opportunities; and improving the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades to maximize their economic viability and make travel more pleasurable. Fisher also wants to ensure the planned redevelopment of the Convention Center will provide job opportunities for local firms and residents. Prior to becoming Pompano Beach mayor, Fisher served five years as Pompano Beach city commissioner for District 3 (the city’s south central portion). He also served on the Broward County Planning Council from 2005 to 2013, and was made chairman for two years. Pompano Beach City Commissioners Rex Hardin and Michael Sobel have filed paperwork with the Pompano Beach City Clerk’s office to run for mayor. Hardin, who represents District 3, has served on the City Commission since 2007, and before that, from 1998 to 2000. Sobel was elected in November 2016 to serve as commissioner for the city’s beachside District 1. Fisher said he will vacate the mayor’s seat at a date in November 2018. As per Florida statute, his resignation must take effect no later than the date he would be sworn in as a Broward County Commissioner if elected. The Broward County Commission usually swears in its members on the third Tuesday of November. Under Pompano’s city charter, if the mayor’s seat is vacated six or more months prior to the next municipal general election, a special election needs to be held within 90 days from the date of the vacancy, and candidates to fill the office must qualify with the city clerk at least three weeks prior to the special election. City Commission Votes Down Term Limits

A

t its Oct. 24 meeting – one of the most well-attended of the year – the Lighthouse Point City Commission grappled with three issues that would have required approval from voters by referendum because they involved changing the city’s charter: moving municipal elections from March to November; limiting the number of terms that the mayor and city commissioners can serve; and extending terms of office from three to four years. These topics first came up following the city’s mayoral race last March. During a workshop held on Oct. 10, it was the consensus of the Lighthouse Point City Commission to put these items on the agenda of its next meeting to have a formal discussion and determine a possible course of action. The discussion was lengthy, and at times intense, but in the end, two motions to have the City Attorney prepare ordinances that would have placed these items on the November 2018 ballot failed to pass. The first motion, which was for an ordinance that would move the election cycle from March to November, was defeated in a 3-2 vote. The second motion was for an ordinance that would extend terms of office to four years and establish term limits of three consecutive four-year terms, with elections in even-numbered years. After reaching their term limit, the mayor and commissioners would be required to sit out one election cycle before they could run again, and the term-limit clock would reset. The motion stipulated that extending the term lengths and setting the term limits needed to be passed together. Commissioners voted 3-2 against the motion. Commission Vice President Jason Joffe, who voted in favor of both motions, said his objective in wanting to establish term limits was to create open seats, which is “important to a thriving democracy.” He said statistics show that the power of an incumbent is very strong, and people are dissuaded from running against someone who’s been in office a long time.

36

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

Commission President Sandy Johnson pointed out that most municipalities in the area don’t have term limits, and that Weston, which enacted term limits in 2002, later regretted it and will be asking voters in the Nov. 2018 election to eliminate them. Johnson, who has been a commissioner for 12 years, also serves on the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization. She said she wouldn’t have been able to move up to the county level without having been a commissioner for so long. Joffe, who was elected in 2015, said he didn’t want to discount the value of commissioners who have served a long time, but believes term limits “will ultimately make us a better city in the long term.” “At minimum, I think it’s something of such merit that the residents of Lighthouse Point should be given an opportunity to vote on it,” said Joffe. Commissioner Kyle Van Buskirk, who has been a commissioner since 2014, also voted in favor of both motions. He said he felt “passionately” about term limits because they encourage new growth and development. Commissioner Michael Long, who has served on the commission since 1999, said he thinks there are reasons for term limits on a higher level, such as Congress, but not in Lighthouse Point, or any small town. Having served 10 years on the city’s Code Enforcement Board before becoming commissioner, Long said he has 28 years of “institutional knowledge,” and that preventing a capable candidate from being on the ballot just because they’ve been elected before would be “hurting this city and its future.” Commissioner Earl Maucker, who’s been a commissioner for six years, said he was “conflicted.” While he sees value in the knowledge, wisdom and experience that incumbents can offer, he’s in favor of term limits, but not institutionalizing them on a municipal level. “I ran against an incumbent who had been in place for 20-something years,” said Maucker. “The reason I did is because I thought that individual had been here too long, and I challenged that. I expect anytime anybody wants to challenge me, they can.” The commissioners asked Mayor Glenn Troast to weigh in on the issue, even though he doesn’t get to vote. “My personal opinion is that this is not a job that I or anyone else should keep for a very long period of time,” said Troast. “You come in, you make a difference, and >>>

<<< then you let someone else take a chance. But I don’t think term limits are the way to get there … Every election is a term limit and I think that’s the way we should continue to do it.” Troast said that extending terms of office to four years and having elections in even numbered years was not a bad idea, and could save the city money, but he was not in favor of November elections, because residents get tired by the time they get to the municipal items that are at the bottom of the ballot. Johnson said she has heard from people in Pompano and other municipalities that have moved their elections from March to November that political parties have gotten involved in the elections and come to the polls, making it partisan. She said the $25,000 to $30,000 it costs to have an election in Lighthouse Point is money well spent to avoid being “buried in the mess of the November elections.” “It’s a small price to pay to maintain our own identity,” said Maucker. Van Buskirk said he was in favor of November elections because Lighthouse Point is “a fiscally conservative city,” and it comes down to saving money. Long said that keeping the elections in March gives candidates the opportunity to “really go face to face with the voters,” and to “keep our issues on the front burner.” “The bottom line is you get more people voting in a November election,” said Joffe, “and I want more people voting in our elections.” During the public comments period at the end of the meeting, several residents told commissioners that citizens should have the opportunity to vote on term limits and the other election-related issues. One resident said he plans to start a citizen initiative petition process to put the question of term limits on a referendum. Y

Chip LaMarca of Lighthouse Point to Run for Florida House

L

ighthouse Point resident Chip LaMarca announced in October that he will run for the Florida House District 93 seat in the Nov. 6, 2018 election, rather than seek a third term on the Broward County Commission. Since 2010, LaMarca has served as the County Commissioner for District 4, which covers most of northeastern Broward. “With one election remaining under term limits, I’ve decided to term limit myself,” said LaMarca. “I’ve been blessed to be elected twice by the voters of a district that did not favor my political affiliation, but embraced my desire to work together to find solutions to the issues we all face in our community.” LaMarca, the only Republican on the nine-member County Commission, has managed to retain his seat, even though District 4 has more registered Democrats than Republicans. In the Florida House, LaMarca hopes to succeed state Rep. George Moraitis, R-Fort Lauderdale, who can’t run for re-election next year due to term limits. LaMarca, who has lived in Lighthouse Point with his wife since 1995, served on several of the city’s boards. He was elected to a seat on the Lighthouse Point City Commission in 2005, and served two terms. Before being elected to the Broward County Commission, he served two terms as chairman of the Broward Republican Party. Two Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination to run against LaMarca for the Florida House District 93 seat: Emma Collum and Stephanie Myers, both of Fort Lauderdale. Soon after LaMarca unveiled his candidacy for state representative, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher announced that in 2018 he will run for the Broward County Commission District 4 seat that LaMarca will vacate. Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca speaks at So far, the only challenger the Pompano Beach High School letter-of-intent signing that Fisher, a Democrat, will ceremony. Photo by Jeff Graves face in the County Commission election is former Oakland Park Mayor and City Commissioner Shari McCartney, a Republican. If more candidates enter the race, either, or both, will have to go through a primary election first. As county commissioner, LaMarca worked to accomplish the Segment II Beach Renourishment Project, which restored areas of eroded shoreline between the Hillsboro Inlet and Port Everglades. He also worked to improve and expand the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades, and to redevelop the Broward County Convention Center, which includes a project for an 800-room hotel that will begin next year. “My wife and I have decided that we will not take the easy path of continuing to serve here at home and be very well-compensated for that service,” said LaMarca. “Instead, my decision is to go to the next arena and fight like hell for the people of our community in the Florida House of Representatives.” Y

City Set to Raise Hedge Height Limits to Accommodate Small Boaters

T

he City Commission is moving forward with a proposed ordinance that will allow residents to continue to keep small boats in their side yards, while still being compliant with the city’s code. Since 1979, the city has had an ordinance in place that allows boats to be parked in side yards of residential properties, provided they are fully screened from view by a fence, wall or hedge that is a maximum of six feet in height. Recently, however, there has been a proliferation of boats that stick above the six-foot height line, and residents in violation of the code have been notified by the city. The proposed ordinance would increase the maximum allowed hedge height from six feet to eight feet on certain portions of non-waterfront residential lots. The ordinance

came before the City Commission for first reading on Nov. 14, at which time the Commission decided that, to be equitable, there should also be a companion ordinance to increase the maximum hedge height from six feet to eight feet on certain portions of waterfront residential lots. The maximum height for walls and fences on both nonwaterfront and waterfront residential lots will remain the same. The issue of boat parking in side yards was originally placed on the agenda of the Oct. 24 City Commission meeting as a discussion item, which drew a large audience. Commissioners also received numerous e-mails and phone calls on the subject from residents prior to the meeting. During the public comments portion of the meeting, a number of small boat owners who live on non-waterfront properties voiced their opinion in favor of loosening the

side yard restrictions, and emphasized that Lighthouse Point is a family-oriented boating community. One resident, who has lived in Lighthouse Point The proposed for over 30 years, asked commissioners to “have ordinance would some consideration increase the for the small boaters, maximum allowed because there are a lot of us out there who hedge height from can’t afford homes on six feet to eight feet the water, but we love to on certain portions boat.” Another small boat of non-waterfront owner, who grew up in residential lots. Lighthouse Point, said, “I wouldn’t even own a boat if I couldn’t store it on the side of my house, because I wouldn’t be able to afford to store it somewhere else.” There were also residents who said they were not in favor of changing the city’s current code, expressing concern that it would negatively impact home values in Lighthouse Point. They also said they wanted the city to maintain its uncluttered landscape, unlike Pompano and Deerfield Beach, which allow larger boats to be stored both in side yards and driveways. One reason why boats have inched their way above Lighthouse Point’s six-foot height limit is because they have gotten bigger over the years, and a lot of them now have T-tops and towers, rather than collapsible tops. Some commissioners said that insufficient enforcement of the current code was also a factor. In addition to the proposed hedge height increase, there are plans to discuss creative methods, such as landscaping, for screening the front view of boats in side yards. The city’s current code allows the storage of boats, recreational vehicles and trailers in side yards, but does not allow them to be stored in driveways or front yards. The city’s Code Enforcement Board has begun speaking to residents with boats in side yards that are well over eight feet high to let them know the boats will have to be moved. They will not cite any boats that are within the 8-foot height limit during the time it takes residents to grow their hedges to the appropriate height. The two proposed ordinances are scheduled to go to the Planning and Zoning Board for a public hearing and recommendation on Dec. 5, and will come back to the City Commission for a second and final reading on Dec. 12. Flyboarding

BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

I FINALLY FOUND MY SUPER POWER ON A FLYBOARD

ONE OF MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AS AN adolescent was watching “Jingle All the Way” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold plays a determined dad on a mission to buy his son a sold-out toy action figure called Turbo Man — a candy-apple-red-costumed super hero with an arch-nemesis named The Dementor. On Christmas Eve, Arnold finds himself in a rat-race, competing with a postman (played by Sinbad) to acquire the impossibleto-find doll. In one of the last scenes of the movie, Arnold inadvertently ends up aboard a holiday parade float dressed in a full-size Turbo Man costume, complete with real-life, built-in rocket boosters. When he powers up his boosters, Arnold is rocketed into the sky at turbo speed, flying haphazardly above the crowds and shooting past skyscrapers and parade floats. I imagined the exhilaration of being able to flip a switch on my forearm, turn on my own boosters and fly around the sky. So this June, when my boyfriend suggested we try Flyboarding in Aruba for my thirtieth (gasp!) birthday, I was giddy with excitement. I saw Flyboarding as my opportunity to experience my childhood dream of flying like Turbo Man using my own rocket boosters. If you haven’t heard of flyboarding, it is a fairly new adventure water sport. You strap on boots and a board, which are connected to a large hose. The hose uses the exhaust from an attached jet ski to create a powerful hydrostream that shoots out two tubes on each side of the flyboard, propelling the flyer out of the water as if they had two aqua-boosters built into their heels. Once a flyer has mastered balancing atop the hydro-streams, they can learn tricks like spinning, dipping, turning, or for the real experts, backflips. Before

going to Aruba, I binge-watched YouTube videos of insane freestyle flyboarders and grew ever more euphoric, my jaw dropped in awe. When the day finally came and I stood on the white sandy beach in Aruba, anxiously awaiting a boat to come transport me to the flyboarding zone, I was nervous and giddy. I nearly skipped to the shore when the boat arrived. My boyfriend went first, slipping his feet into the boots and sliding off the back of the boat into the aquamarine water. The jet-ski operator gave him very little instruction except to keep his legs straight and “try to balance.” I thought my boyfriend, who grew up skiing the Italian Alps and is sharp as a tack, would be an instant expert; so when — for about the first three minutes — he flopped around like a dying fish, I grew nervous. >>>

With each try, the jetstream just barely pushed him out of the water before his legs wobbled, his knees buckled and he flopped to his side or stomach. As I watched him grow increasingly more frustrated and simultaneously determined, I worried we were in for a terribly tense, egocrushing afternoon. If he couldn’t get the hang of it, there was scarce hope I would. But after a few failed attempts, he suddenly popped out of the water and stood with his hands on his hips like Superman after saving a pretty girl from a burning building. It was as if his brain had found the flipswitch and he suddenly had rocket powers. When he did loose his balance, he would gracefully raise his arms to his ears like an Olympian and dive effortlessly into the water. Rather than wait for him to catch his breath or get re-situated, the quiet jet ski operator started immediately pulling the throttle to re-propel my boyfriend out of the water after each dive. The action pushed him into a continuous diving motion that made him look like a dolphin playing in the wake of a boat. In his last turn, he raised about 15 feet into the air, held his arms out like wings and hollered with joy. When it was my turn, I was not anywhere near as graceful. I was more like the kid at summer camp who belly flops when trying to dive. When I fell, I hit the water like a pancake flipped in a fying pan. My arms flailed. My legs thrashed. My balance deserted me, and I smacked down hard with each defeat, bruising my hips and underarms. In spite of my known propensity for klutziness, I had hoped (with some shy suspicion), that my snowboarding experience would aid me. I grew up in Colorado and was on the competitive snowboard team in college. I thought surely the experience would help. I was sadly mistaken. In fact, it backfired completely. In snowboardng, you bend your back knee and put pressure on your heel to carve, but with flyboarding (as I brutally learned), this makes you spin in a circle and crash. So after many, many defeats (so many that the jet ski operator actually brought me out of sight from my boyfriend to save me the embarrassment and video evidence), I decided to try a new strategy. Instead of thinking about snowboarding, I pretended to be a ballerina. I raised my arms like a halo around my head, lifted my torso, focused on the horizon and repeated the phrase: “I am a ballerina. I am a ballerina.” It was this magical mantra that was my rocket-booster-flip-switch. I must have somehow channeled Clara from “The Nutcracker” because I suddenly found balance and grace. When I did finally start consistently raising out of the water, pushed up by those glorious hydrostreams, I squealed with excitement. While I only raised up about seven feet, I was ecstatic. Now I know there’s hope for my second (hopefully less embarassing) flyboarding adventure, which I plan to take right here in the sunshine state. Y

It Takes a Village BY CRAIG HALEY

I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE REALIZE a big goal that has taken years of training, hard work and dedication. We just came off a sold-out Black Belt Spectacular on Oct. 7. We saw 33 students graduate from first- to fourthdegree Black Belt with 625 people in the crowd cheering them on. Seeing people achieve a huge goal like Black Belt still Elite Force gets me. After the Spectacular, I always spend time talking with parents about their kids. They are so proud as they remind me of when their kids started martial arts, why they started and how they have changed and grown over the years. It’s remarkable. I hear how parents would threaten their kids — how they would tell their children they would ‘tell Shihan if they didn’t start behaving better at home.’ By the way, I use the same tactic with my daughter using Mr. McDaniel, Mr. Lisby, and Sensei Hons. She loves them and does not want to disappoint them. One of our key philosophies in the dojo is, “always team up and never give up.” We believe in teaching our students, both kids and adults, the power of a non-quitting spirit. In every long-term goal there are going to be times when a student will question if the hard work and time commitment are worth it. Ask any doctor, lawyer, accountant, entrepreneur, or Black Belt. I’m confident at one point or another, they questioned if it was worth it or not. Once they achieved their goal, they always tell you it was. What’s the point? After Black Belt Spectaculars, I’m always reminded that it takes a village to raise our kids. As parents, we do everything in our power to teach our kids core values, right from wrong, and how to be successful, but our kids don’t always listen to us. We need those other role models and influencers in our kids’ lives to shape them, to help them make good decisions and keep them on the right path.

As I look at my own daughter, I see many of those key influential people right in our own dojo. The instructors, teenage black belts whom my daughter looks up to, and other parents who are helping her stay on track. I’m grateful that my wife and I have been able to influence and guide our students to stay on track and help the parents with their kids. Our instructors hold our students accountable and keep them on the right path. It truly does take a village to raise our kids the right way. I am reminded of a quote by the late, great author, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones. He says, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” How true! I always say the best people in all of south Florida train at Elite Force Martial Arts because they seem to have that right combination of respect, being nice, discipline and focus. I am grateful for the village we have created. I am grateful for the people in that village. I am grateful for the many wonderful people who have influenced me over the years and helped me become the person I am today. To this day, I have many wonderful friends, family members and mentors who help me stay on track and encourage me to be my best. I am honored to be a part of other families’ villages. I am honored to have so many wonderful people influencing my daughter in a positive way. Holiday Cheer?

BY DR. JILL SELBACH

IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE FORGETS TO DEFROST THE TURKEY COPING STRATEGIES FOR THE SEASON OF JOY... THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING AND THIS CAN BE A joyous time or a stressful time for many people. For some it brings feelings of dread, stress or anxiety. Stress is a physiological or psychological state that results from demanding circumstances, but more importantly, how we perceive those circumstances. Why is family stress so intense during the holidays? It is our expectations that exponentially increase the family stress. We expect Uncle Joe to incite a political

a budget and stick with it to avoid the financial stress that goes along with the holiday season. Make lists of people to remember and tasks to complete. Start early with your holiday preparations. It is important to remember to keep doing the things you usually do to manage stress; such as exercise, eating well and meditation. DON’T SET YOURSELF UP TO FAIL. Set good boundaries. Decide ahead of time how much time you will spend with family or at family gatherings. Set limits on the number of events you will attend, for whom you will be buying gifts and how much holiday baking you will do. Forget about perfection. Your house will be in disarray and that’s O.K. Remember, you can’t do it all. Focus on what really matters: the people in your life. MOST OF ALL, REMEMBER WHAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT. They are about gratitude, giving thanks,

argument, we dread being asked where we are working now (when unemployed) or when we are going to graduate (when in our fifth year of undergrad). It is also that we believe others expect things to be perfect. When our beliefs or attitudes conflict with behavior, we experience discomfort. It is natural for us to avoid situations that produce this discomfort, but it is difficult to avoid family during the holidays. MANAGE YOUR STRESS LEVEL BY PLANNING. Create

appreciating those we care about and recognizing our spiritual roots. Individuals who regularly practice gratitude by taking the time to acknowledge and reflect upon what they’re grateful for tend to be more positive, enjoy life more, sleep better, get sick less and express more kindness and compassion. When feeling blue, it is always a good idea to “get outside yourself.” Stop thinking about yourself and turn your attention to others. Look for ways to serve others. This is a win-win. You’ll feel good about helping others, and others benefit from your help. Get kids involved in helping or serving others over the holiday season. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, or bring your kids to the grocery store to shop for all the things needed to have a holiday meal and take it to a local shelter or food bank. It is never too early to teach your kids about gratitude and serving others. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. FIVE TIPS FOR KEEPING THE CRITTERS AWAY IT’S THE TIME OF YEAR IN LIGHTHOUSE POINT WE IN the pest control industry call “rodent season.” Even in Lighthouse Point, during the last few months of the year, it gets a bit cooler, which causes a spike in calls to our office for rodent or rat activity in someone’s home. You might say, “rats are just a part of our tropical area, and there’s nothing you can do.” Well, you would be wrong. Even if you don’t think you have a problem in your home, there are steps you can and should take. Here are the top five things a homeowner can do to keep their home rat-free:

1

INSPECT YOUR HOME for any openings around the

exterior and seal them off. Check for openings around all doors, windows and garages and seal them off with new weather stripping or caulking. Pro-Tips: • Rats can squeeze their body through a half inch opening. • Use concrete patch to fill holes around hose bibs, A/C plumbing, dryer stacks, electrical conduits, etc. • Cap off vent stacks on the roof with galvanized screen, 26-gauge or thicker.

Do you have any fruit-bearing trees on your property? You need to make sure there isn’t any fruit laying on the ground.

2 KEEP YOUR LANDSCAPE FROM BEING OVERGROWN

and trees and palms from touching the roof of your home. In warmer weather, rodents like to live outdoors. As the weather gets colder, they can walk across a branch onto your roof looking for a new home. Pro-Tips: • Keep grass and vegetation cut short. • Make sure there are no piles of debris around the exterior of the structure

56

3 INSPECT YOUR ATTIC FOR ANY RODENT ACTIVITY. If you find droppings or smell something funny, be careful not to touch or breath in too much. The air could be contaminated and can cause asthma and/or hantavirus. Hantaviruses can cause potentially fatal infections. Infection occurs by breathing air that’s contaminated by rodent urine and droppings. If you find this, you may need a hazmat team to sanitize your attic. Then have your insulation cleaned out and replaced.

Pro-Tips: • Make sure to pick fruit when ripe, or else you are just supplying the rats with a fast-food stop. • Make sure to not leave your bag of pet food on the floor; instead put in an airtight container. • Keep your trash in sturdy garbage bins so that rats or any other animals cannot have easy access. Give JP Miller a call today if you want one of our QualityPro Certified Technicians to do any, or all, of the above. We will do a thorough inspection of your home and property and offer you a detailed plan to keep your home off the open market for rats and rodents. THE SEASIDE GRILL HAS PROVEN ITSELF A CENTERPIECE for seafood in Pompano Beach since owner Bret Hughes opened the oceanside restaurant in 2011. Located in the Lighthouse Cove Resort, the grill is newly revamped to include a Tiki Bar by the pool facing the shore. The atmosphere inside, with its ocean-view exposures, can be characterized as elegantly marine. Hughes, who tended bars in restaurants to support himself through college and held a post as Vice President of Key Foods, founded Seaside Grill after happening upon a vacant restaurant along the shore, as if picking up seashells. Hughes believes in the power of personality to influence environment, and thus places a high premium on cultivating a friendly, hardworking staff of waiters, chefs and bartenders. “You live or die based on the people you surround yourself with,” he said, explaining that fostering an environment where his employees are happy ultimately “spills over and enhances the customer experience.” The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the entrées have proven THE SEASIDE GRILL IS LOCATED AT: popular among locals and 1406 N. options for the seafood-allergic patron. Some of those entrées include a chicken Parmigiana and a classic penne pomodoro — with red sauce, basil and garlic. A grouper sandwich, served with jerk cream sauce and topped with pico de gallo, puts an eclectic spin on the Caribbean favorite. The jerk cream sauce marinates penne pasta in the Pasta Rasta. Happy hour runs its course daily throughout the work-week, Monday-Friday from 4 to 7pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays the restaurant features live entertainment. Y

TO THE POINT LEGAL MATTERS

Out of State Legal Documents ARE THEY VALID IN FLORIDA?

BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY AS MANY OF OUR SNOWBIRDS COME BACK to Florida, a common question is: do my legal papers from another state work in Florida? With some exceptions, the answer is no. There are three main documents that protect you in Florida if you become incapacitated: designation of health care surrogate, written declaration, (also known as living will) and the durable power of attorney. Other states may have different names for these documents, but their substance is similar: you are designating one or more persons to take care of making medical decisions for you if you are unable to communicate and to take care of your legal and financial affairs if you become incapacitated. Every state is like a different country. Each state has its own laws and regulations regarding these three documents. The law in Florida is very clear regarding language, required references to specific Florida statutes, HIPAA compliant language for the health care surrogate and requirements for initialing specific powers for which the durable power of attorney will apply. It is unlikely that you can find online the appropriate language that is necessary to create documents that will be effective in Florida. Our current durable power of attorney document is 26 pages to be sure it conforms to the new Florida law. If you have similar documents from another State, it is likely that they will not be valid in Florida. Therefore, for my snowbird clients who divide their time primarily between two states, I recommend a set of documents for Florida, and another set for the other state. This will provide protection should you become incapacitated in either state. You will not have to worry if your out of state documents will be honored. If you have a last will and testament that has been properly executed in another state, and you die in Florida, that will is valid and can be filed in the Florida probate courts. However, it becomes much more time consuming, costly and difficult to probate an out-of-state will in Florida. A commissioner in the other state needs

60

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

to be appointed by the Florida judge. The commissioner must take the sworn testimony of one of the witnesses to the will before it can be admitted to the Florida probate court. Sometimes, particularly if the will was done awhile ago, the witnesses cannot be located. If you have a Florida will and it is properly executed and notarized, these extra requirements and court orders will not be necessary. Therefore, to make it easier, faster and less expensive to probate, you should consider making a new Florida will, particularly if you are now a Florida resident. If you wish to avoid probate on real estate that you own in Florida and in another state, it is a good idea to consider a Florida revocable living trust and a deed to transfer your Florida property into the trust. When you return to the other state, have a lawyer do a deed transferring that property to the Florida trust. This will avoid two separate probates in two states upon your death. This is just a brief summary of the law and why it is advisable to have Florida documents. I always offer a free consultation to review your current documents, whether from Florida or another state, and give specific advice regarding your circumstances. Y Martin Zevin is available to discuss wills, trusts, estates and probate and is available for free consultation regarding personal injury claims or car insurance coverage. Annual Scroogie Awards BY WENDELL ABERN

DEAR HOLIDAY REVELERS, Scroogies are awards I inaugurated in 2006, as an homage to my idol and favorite role model, Ebeneezer Scrooge. I award Scroogies only to those who have proved themselves worthy, through acts of idiocy, inconsiderateness, boorishness, arrogance, or any other trait that just plain rankles me and merits my curmudgeonly wrath. The following are eminently deserving. 1 – My own big fat mouth. Not me. My mouth. Somehow or other, my mouth always seems to get into gear before my brain gets cranked up. My last blurt happened last month during a bridge tournament against two very nice-looking women. My partner and I trounced them. Three hands. We demolished them in all three. When they arose to move to the next table, I turned to the woman on my right and said, “So I suppose this means I should give up all thoughts of being your boy-toy.” In a Weinsteinian era, I’m still blurting. Dirty looks from both opponents as they left in a huff. Dirtier look from my partner. I have since decided my mouth is no longer part of my body, but a separate entity. While I have met many people during 2017 who merit humiliation as much as my mouth, I have decided this year to do something different. From time to time, we all receive humorous e-mails. Many are genuinely funny. I have never before used any of them in a column, but in cleaning out my files last month, I came across some quotes that are so priceless, I saved them for this column. Some of these inane comments were actually spoken by notable and famous people. However, I have not been able to verify their authenticity. In an effort to spare my editors angry phone calls from literary, sports and theatrical agents (and lawsuits from lawyers), I have not disclosed any names.

I mean, I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.” 3 – A New Orleans Saint running back “This year, I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.” 4 – A Very Famous Actress During an interview to become spokesperson for the federal anti-smoking campaign: “Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.” 5 – A non-famous college basketball player “I’ve never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body.” 6 – Mayor of a very large American city “Outside of the killings, we have one of the lowest crime rates in the country.” 7- A football coach to his team “You guys line up alphabetically by height.” To another >>>

I practically grew up in Phoenix.” 10 – A famous CEO of a large corporation “We’ve got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?” 11 – A famous professional football player. “The word ‘genius’ isn’t applicable in football. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.” 12 – A non-famous ROTC instructor “We don’t necessarily discriminate. I have 50 million dollars, but I’m just as happy as when I had 48 million.” 17 – A famous speaker “We are here on earth to do good to others. What the others are here for, I have no idea.” 18 – A University of Houston wide receiver, on his coach “He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings.” 19 – From a church bulletin “Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don’t forget your husbands.” 20 – A boxing trainer, on the Spartan regimen of his heavyweight: “He’s a guy who gets up at six o’clock in the morning, regardless of what time it is.” For those of you who feel I have unfairly picked on too many athletes, I can only say I just couldn’t resist. A MILLION THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT

PLUNGE BY SUSAN ROSSER

A middle-aged couple finds the fountain of youth in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

Details. Details. It was clear from the moment my husband Richard and I entered the aptly-named Plunge Beach Hotel, that no detail was too small for its creators to consider. In fact, what separates Plunge from the hyper-competitive beach hotel market are the smaller things that make you smile — and sometimes even laugh. Who doesn’t love a waiter wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “I hate tips — said no Juan ever.”

et’s start at the beginning. The front desk was completely covered with retro-style surf, skate and travel stickers. For me, these stickers served as both a funny reminder of my seventh grade algebra notebook, and a personal re-boot for the weekend. Immediately, I knew this was not an ordinary, stuffy and corporate hotel. We clearly had entered another world — one considerably more hip and youthful than our typical universe. The lobby decor was a clear tribute to the modern-industrial SoHo loft but with plenty of more personal touches that made us feel welcome. The colorful and plush furnishings served as a warm contrast to the cement grey floors and exposed duct work on the ceilings. So while there is a distinct and edgy “look how cool and hip we are” thing going on, we were also acutely aware that we were just steps from the ocean. (The three colorful surfboards mounted on a lobby wall drove that point home.) Even the walk to our room was fun. The royal blue hallways are lined with white, funky picture “frames” that are hand-painted directly onto the walls framing historical photos along with oldtimey scenes of Florida. A hand painted white wave runs the length of the hallway — another vivid reminder of the beach. In fact, the artwork throughout the entire hotel has been carefully curated to amplify the cuttingedge style of Plunge. By the time we reached our ocean-front room, I had completely forgotten about my stressful week at work. (Do I even have a job? I wondered.) Finding a beach ball on the bed was just icing on the cake. Even at 53-years-old, >>>

The Octopus Bar and Restaurant

The stand-out restaurant at Plunge is The Octopus Bar and Restaurant, which is completely open to the lobby and makes for great people watching. The funky gastropub and eatery serves an eclectic menu in tapas style or larger portions, and is open daily from 4pm to 10pm. Guests can mingle around a large, semicircular, copper-topped bar, or chill in one of the many colorfully plush lounge seating areas. A sampling of Octopus’s appetizing, tasting-sized menu options include: salmon rillette topped with fried capers, lemon and crème fraiche; coco mussels in a kaffir-lime coconut broth; Napa cabbage with grilled country bread; and fried clam strips with roasted onion aioli and red peppers. Tapas prices range from $11 to $15. For those who’ve worked up an appetite on the beach, larger sized portions include Florida shrimp tagliatelle drizzled in a tomato-lemon fondue, thyme and tarragon; and grilled tri-tip roast with seared heirloom tomatoes. Entrée prices range from $13 to $25. “Octopus has a distinctive and artsy vibe so we created the menu to have a sassy spin on traditional American comfort foods,” said Will Silbernagel, Food and Beverage Director. a “grassy” ottoman room decoration; industrial style light fixtures at the entrance; a view from the beach; there is a chalkboard in every room — we used ours for love notes. Don’t hate us.

when I see an inflated beach ball, I feel compelled to tap it up in the air like a small child. Other room furnishings included a dresser/desk unit and nightstands made of thick plywood with intentionally unfinished edges, adding to the industrial feel. We agreed that our favorite touch was the ottoman made of a green and grassy fabric adorned with red and orange fabric maple leaves. Each room also has a chalkboard, which we used to leave little love notes to each other during our weekend — a tangible reminder of why we decided we needed a weekend away in the first place. Plus, it was just sort of fun seeing who could write the cutest note on the board. Soon after check-in, we headed out to the beach for a quick swim in the ocean and a cocktail at Backflip, the hotel’s bar on the beach. Our plan was to have one drink, shower back at the room and then head out to dinner. However, we couldn’t think of anywhere we would rather eat than right there on the beach. We stayed for dinner (and a few more drinks with names like “Tweet me Ishmael” and Bigger Boat Needed”) and had a variety of street style tacos — our favorite was a tie between the garlic shrimp and the cauliflower and chickpea. With its edgy and contemporary flair, Plunge Beach Hotel still manages to be a warm and inviting hideaway with a great sense of humor. There are hilarious signs, funny staff t-shirts and original modern art to keep you smiling. All weekend long, I had the feeling I had been invited to a party with the cool kids — and that I was actually one of them. Y

DINING OUT STAFF LUNCH

Bonding over Barbecue A MIDDAY MEAL AT SHANE’S RIB SHACK IN POMPANO BEACH SHANE’S RIB SHACK 1151 S Federal Highway Pompano Beach 954-942-3334

It was one of those glorious South Florida days when it would have been a sin to work inside all day. With that in mind, the Lighthouse Point magazine team headed out for lunch to Shane’s Rib Shack in Pompano Beach. With generous portions of classics like barbecue baby back ribs, a zillion variety of wings, a perfectly smoked half-chicken and all the sides you’d expect (plus a few out-of-the-ordinary) we could have rolled ourselves back to the office. It was a challenge not to play hooky all afternoon and nap—but alas—deadlines were approaching.

What we tasted

We started by sharing an order of wings and opted for the buff-Q style which is a combination of barbecue and Buffalo sauce. LISA dove into a full-rack of baby back ribs and never looked back. COLTON, who clearly was the ordering-challenged of the group, finally settled on the sampler platter. DANIELLE, who can always be counted on to make a healthy choice went with the barbecue chicken salad. CINDY kicked it old-school with a Big Dad— Shane’s signature sandwich of slow-smoked, chopped pork. And SUSAN took the manager’s recommendation and went with the smoked chicken—which was an excellent choice. A few of our favorite sides were fried okra, coleslaw, sweet potato fries and macaroni and cheese among others. Everyone vowed to only take “just a few bites” of the peach cobbler for dessert, but that proved a difficult promise to keep.

For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel— it’s divine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers—which, of course, is a great sign. UNSOLICITED ADVICE

Entry Level

GIVE A KID A CHANCE TO WORK… YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN

BY GREG EDWARDS

EACH MONTH WHEN LIGHTHOUSE POINT MAGAZINE SHOWS up on my door, delivered to my home by neighborhood kids, fond memories of childhood come to mind. I was once a newspaper delivery boy, and that job probably changed the course of my path, because that job earned me my first boat. Growing up on a canal in Pompano Beach exposed me to life on the water at a very young age. My father had a 23-foot Chris Craft we would go everywhere in…even to Hope Town, Abaco and the Bahamas. To me, that Chris Craft was a grand ship, and I wanted one of my own. At the age of 12, my boat-buying options were rather limited. I told my dad about my dream of owning my own boat and he said if I earned enough money to buy the shell of a boat, he would buy me the motor.

Back in the day, there was a newspaper called the Pompano Shopper. Some people called it a rag. I’m not sure why, but I really didn’t care. All I knew was that the Pompano Shopper needed a paper boy to deliver papers on Wednesdays. I figured I could roll the papers in the morning before school and deliver them after school. With this plan, I took the job and began folding and delivering papers. My route took me through the Harbor Village neighborhood in Pompano Beach. I would stuff two large canvas bags full of rolled-up, rubber-banded papers and would ride around with one bag on each handle

bar. My route meandered up and down many streets and over a few bridges. Looking at all the boats down the canals while riding my bike and delivering papers gave me inspiration. I dreamed of my future boat. I delivered papers for months and months. I saved and saved and saved. Then my opportunity appeared. My neighbor was moving and planned to sell his 11-foot Malibu. That blue boat was going to be mine. When Christmas was over and my birthday had passed, I talked with my dad about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He agreed to purchase a 6hp Johnson outboard engine for the boat. It was a done deal. I bought the boat for $300. Now she was mine! At first, my boundaries were Atlantic Boulevard to NE 14th Street Causeway. Then, my father expanded them to Lake Santa Barbara and the Lighthouse Point Marina, which was owned by my dad’s buddy Don Spieker. My friends and I would go everywhere in that blue boat fishing, knee boarding, snorkeling and even to school. We actually camped out at the inlet one night. More than a dozen boats have come and gone since that blue Malibu, but she will always hold a special place in my heart — not just because of the good memories, but because she taught me the value of working hard. I think I treasured her so much because I earned her myself. Having to deliver papers to earn her made her more special. As a result, boating and life on the water became an integral part of my life. That Malibu even introduced me to my wife Debbie…remember my dad’s buddy, Don Spieker? She was his daughter. If there’s one piece of wisdom I can pass on, it’s to let your kids work and learn the value of earning things for themselves. It might just change the course of their path as it did mine. *A Vertical Rewards Plus Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 1.50% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .05% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. Thereafter, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .05% APY to 1.50% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services performed each statement cycle. If the direct deposit and minimum qualifying banking services transactions are not met during a statement cycle, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the Base Interest Rate for that statement cycle.
