BEYOND HALLOWEEN
I’m not a fan of costumes. Consequently, I have always been ambivalent about Halloween. But, I do love a little candy now and then – especially if there’s chocolate involved.
While the idea of donning a skeleton suit feels daunting, I love the tradition of trick-or-treating. Now that I’m well into adulthood, I especially enjoy watching the kids in my neighborhood trek from house to house in loud, boisterous packs.
I recently read a New York Times article about the loneliness epidemic. Yes, experts are calling it an epidemic, and it’s not hard to see why. In a world where we are more digitally connected than ever, many of us ironically feel more isolated. So, the idea of a day where kids are not only allowed but encouraged, to traipse around town asking neighbors for candy feels almost miraculous – and indeed, a welcome change of pace.
In fact, it begs the question: How can we develop more national traditions like trick-or-treating? I realize that holidays like Halloween can’t happen every day but imagine if we had more opportunities to break out of our digital bubbles and connect with people in meaningful ways.
Halloween gives us a taste of what that could look like – children laughing together comparing their candy conquests, parents chatting on porches, and neighbors opening their doors to one another. It’s a brief but powerful reminder of the community bonds that we overlook in our day-to-day lives.
What if we created more holidays or community events that encouraged us to step outside, meet our neighbors and share a moment of joy? Maybe, just maybe, it could help us all feel a little less alone.

DOG DATES - They say every dog has its day, and at Fairchild Gardens there are three this month – October 6, 20 and 27. On these select Sunday mornings, Fairchild opens its gates to our furry friends for Dog Dates at the Garden. The stroll is for pooches, and their humans, to explore the attraction’s 83 acres of lush land. The event runs from 8 to 10 a.m., and dogs must remain on a leash at all times. Tickets are $24.95/adult, $15.95/student and $11.95/child, and are available online. For more information, visit www.fairchildgarden.org.

Barktoberfest will take place in sessions starting at 8 a.m. Saturday-Sunday, October 5-6 at Quiet Waters Park. The first session of the day is dedicated to small dogs, with sessions for all size dogs beginning at 9 a.m. until 3:50 p.m. Animal rescue and non-profit groups will also have booths at the event, and there will be a Doggie Market Place where you can pick up a special something for your best friend. Open to the public, the tenth annual western-themed festival takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. at Tomorrow’s Rainbow Mini Ranch on Sunday, October 20. The all-inclusive $15 per person fee includes hotdogs, refreshments, snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn. Filling Up the Cup
Did you know? The Stanley Cup has had many, many adventures. The tradition of The Cup traveling the globe dates back to 1995. Since then, the 37-pound trophy has visited places near and far.
The championship-winning Cats got their turn to tour, and over the summer toted the trophy everywhere from the beach to the Boys & Girls Club to Bennett Elementary School where local kids got to meet players and take a close look at the trophy. The Cup was presented by players in other ways too. Sam Bennett shared a bowl of Captain Crunch out of the Stanley Cup with his dad, Aleksander Barkov took the trophy to his hometown in Finland, and Matthew Tkachuk made stops at his elementary school in St. Louis, the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and local police and fire departments.
The new hockey season starts this month with a Florida Panthers home opener against the Boston Bruins at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on October 8. This season’s theme nights include 90s Night, Star Wars Night, and a Kids Day.
To see the full summer tour of the Stanley Cup, visit the 2024 Stanley Cup Tracker link at www.nhl.com/panthers/ news/2024-stanley-cup-tracker. For a complete list of upcoming theme nights, see www.floridapanthers.com/ themenights.
Squash Sibling Rivalry
TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR FAMILY FOR A NEW ARRIVAL
TANNI HAAS, PH.D.
Few things are more important to parents than having their kids get along well together. Nevertheless, it can be difficult for kids, especially toddlers, to accept new additions to the family. “Where they were once the center of your world, now they’re forced to share the spotlight,” as Sophie Bell of parenting site BabyCentre explains it. Let’s consider what you can do and say to reduce the amount of sibling rivalry there is following the arrival of a new baby. Here’s what the experts suggest:
TELL YOUR KIDS THAT YOU’RE PREGNANT. Experts agree that you should tell your kids that you’re pregnant before you tell other family members and friends. Bell says that doing so will make your kids feel special and inspire a sense of “ownership” that’ll reduce any sibling rivalry. Clinical psychologist Dr. Hindie Klein adds that you can foster such a sense of ownership by referring to the new baby as “our baby” instead of “the baby.” The point is to make your kids feel that they’re participants as opposed to passive
spectators to this new experience.
PREPARE THEM FOR THE BABY. Create a sense of ownership, Bell says, by letting your kids feel the baby kicking in your stomach and talking to it, and by showing them photos of when you were pregnant with them. If your kids are toddlers or preschoolers, Dr. Klein adds, tell them about their own birth and read books with them about what it’s like to be pregnant.
INVOLVE THEM IN TAKING CARE OF THE BABY. Once you and the newborn are safely home from the hospital, involve your kids as much as possible in taking care of the baby. Among many other things, they can fetch diapers and hold towels at bath time, talk gently or sing to the baby when it cries, and hold the baby in their lap assuming that they’re properly propped up in an armchair or couch with big pillows on either side. The latter suggestion is especially important since babies give off pheromones that when inhaled, make us fall in love with and become protective of them. “The more
your older child snuggles the new sibling, the better their relationship is likely to be,” says Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist and author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Siblings
FOCUS ON SIBLING BONDING. Regardless of how you choose to involve your kids in caring for the baby, always point out how much the baby loves their attention. This enhances their bonding and reduces any sibling rivalry. Say things like: “My, he loves it when you sing to him!” suggests Dr. Markham.
SPEND EXTRA TIME WITH YOUR KIDS.
Taking care of a baby is time-consuming, and it can be hard to find any additional time to spend alone with your other kids. But to the extent possible, try to carve out a little time, even if it’s only 10-15 minutes a day, just for them. Those few minutes can do wonders in terms of reducing any sibling rivalry.
REINFORCE YOUR LOVE FOR THEM.
Assure your other kids that the baby hasn’t changed your feelings for them. If anything, you love and appreciate them even more now that they’re big brothers or sisters who help take care of the baby so well. You want to emphasize, says Dr. Markham, “all the wonderful things about who they are and how they contribute to the family.” Don’t underestimate the importance of extra cuddles and kisses for the other kids. “Even if they’re too young to fully understand,” Bell says, “they’ll appreciate the cuddles and kisses that come with this special time to bond with you.”
ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR FEELINGS.
Despite your best efforts to make your other kids bond with the baby, they’re likely to experience frustrations that if left unacknowledged can lead to sibling rivalry. It’s always a good idea to acknowledge those frustrations. “Encourage older children to talk about their feelings and conflicts and assure them that they can have these feelings and still be a wonderful older brother or sister,” Dr. Klein says. If your other kids are toddlers, help them put words to their frustrations if they’re unable to do so themselves.

Effortless Flavor
Your Go-To No-Recipe Dinner
This is a no-recipe recipe –it’s all about simple slicing, dicing and roasting. The oven does the heavy lifting, transforming everyday vegetables into savory, caramelized bites.
You can use any sausage or even swap out Brussels sprouts for broccoli; the key is improvisation. Keep this in your back pocket for a quick dinner. Because I’m crazy for condiments, I whipped up a quick, sweet curry sauce inspired by classic currywurst. Everything is so flavorful that you might not even need the sauce, but if you’re a fan of dipping, ketchup, ranch or spicy mustard will do just fine.
Recipe and Photo by Susan Rosser
Sheet Pan Sausage
Ingredients:
(There are no specific quantities – roast as much sausage and veggies as you need.)
FOR THE SAUSAGE AND VEGETABLES
Bratwurst or kielbasa, sliced into ½-inch slices
Sweet potatoes, cut into half-moons
Butternut squash, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (see tip below)
Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
Olive oil
Kosher salt and pepper, to taste Fresh parsley, roughly chopped (optional)
FOR THE CURRY SAUCE
1 small onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons tomato paste
½ cup ketchup
¾ cup beef bouillon (such as Better Than Bouillon)
2 teaspoons curry powder (such as garam masala)
Preparation:
1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 450°F (or 425°F if using convection).
2. Prepare the Vegetables: Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Arrange the vegetables in a single layer. Depending on the amount of sausage and vegetables, you may need two baking sheets to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to steaming instead of roasting. Drizzle the vegetables with olive oil and toss to coat evenly – season vegetables with kosher salt. Add the sliced sausage and toss everything together.
Arrange the Brussels sprouts cut-side down.
3. Roast: Roast for about 30 minutes. Halfway through, give everything a good toss to ensure even cooking. If the Brussels sprouts aren’t browned yet, make sure they remain cut side down.
4. Prepare the Curry Sauce: While the vegetables are roasting, heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Sauté the onion until it becomes translucent. Stir in the tomato paste and cook until it deepens in color. Add the curry powder and mix well. Next, stir in the ketchup and beef bouillon. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer until the sausage and vegetables are ready.
5. Serve: Remove from the oven and sprinkle with parsley if using. Enjoy the roasted sausage and veggies as is or serve with the curry sauce on the side for dipping.
Tip: For easier cubing, peel the butternut squash and microwave it for a few minutes to soften slightly before cutting. Or, better yet, buy the pre-cubed variety.
‘App-y’ Halloween
CARVE OUT SOME TIME TO DOWNLOAD THESE SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN APPS
TANNI HAAS, PH.D.
There are few holidays kids look forward to with more anticipation than Halloween. After all, what’s more fun than carving pumpkins, wearing costumes and going trick-or-treating with your friends? Here are some great Halloween apps for the whole family. The best part is that they’re all free, so download an app – or three!
CARVE-A-PUMPKIN (Apple App Store)
Halloween wouldn’t be the same without pumpkin carving. How about carving virtual pumpkins to see who can create the silliest or scariest jack-o’-lantern? You can choose pumpkins of different shapes and sizes, and then create your own designs or select from a host of decorating options that include eyes, noses and mouths. You can even decorate your pumpkins with stickers. The best part is that you won’t cut yourselves, there’s no mess to clean up and you can experiment with different designs until you find the one that’s just right.
MAKE A ZOMBIE (Apple App Store)
While you’re at it, why not make a scary zombie or two? With Make A Zombie you can create lots of blood-curdling zombies by combining different heads, hairstyles, eyes, mouths, bodies, legs and clothes. When you’re done, have the kids share their creations with other family members and friends for some spooky fun. They can also print them out and bring them to school to share with classmates or have them copied onto t-shirts or hoodies.
MONSTERFY (Apple App Store; Google Play)
Another fun activity is to change your own face into a
frightening creature like a ghost, ghoul, vampire or werewolf. Monsterfy lets you swap your face with all kinds of ghastly monsters and then brings you to life with some crazy animations. You can growl, howl, snap, and snarl and flick your fangs while sharing images and videos with family and friends.
HALLOWEEN GAMES FOR KIDS (Apple App Store)
Dressing up like scary monsters may be a bit much for the youngest members of the family, but that doesn’t mean that they should be left out of all the fun. Halloween Games for Kids has lots of Halloween-themed games that toddlers will enjoy including matching funny pumpkins, tracing letters that are accompanied by Halloween-related images and spelling a variety of Halloween-themed words. The app also has a coloring book that younger ones can enjoy.
HALLOWEEN WORDSEARCH (Apple App Store)
For the older kids, Halloween WordSearch is a great choice for some brainteasing fun. Have the kids download the app, select the same word searches, and then see who can find the most words in the shortest time. Do it once the kids are home from trick-or-treating and can’t wait to get comfy on the couch and devour their candy. The app has word puzzles at different levels of difficulty, accompanied by a scare soundtrack to make the mood sufficiently spooky.

The Favorite
LEAVES NO GREEN BEAN UNEATEN
BY SUSAN ROSSER
Several years ago, my sister shared an amusing tradition upheld within her family – one that immediately resonated with me. Without hesitation, I adopted this custom in my household. In my sister’s home, the family member who consumes any remaining leftovers is promptly honored with the title of “the favorite.”
This simple and even arbitrary tradition became a source of humor and connection in our daily lives. That last piece of roast chicken, forgotten between a jar of pickles and a bag of wrinkled grapes – whoever finishes it is instantly elevated to the status of the favorite. The tradition added a bit of lighthearted competition and turned an ordinary task into a coveted achievement.
At the time, neither of my children was particularly inclined to eat leftovers. However, driven by her desire to claim the title, my daughter frequently snacked on the previous night’s dinner after school. During high school, a close friend often joined her in this quest, eagerly searching for undiscovered mystery packages in the fridge – what we humorously dubbed “tin foil surprise.” On a good day, you might uncover barbecued ribs, but more often than not, it was just a few random green beans – hardly a prize. Yet, no matter what was inside, finishing it earned one the title. It became a competition, with my daughter holding onto the coveted crown for weeks at a time.
Unbeknownst to him, my husband, in a bid to secure the title of favorite, had already eaten the aforementioned pizza.
I expressed my disappointment, explaining that I had intended for our son to enjoy the pizza for lunch.
“But I thought I would be the favorite,” he replied, crestfallen.
At that moment, I instituted an amendment: consuming leftover pizza –a food item seldom wasted – does not earn one the favorite title.
Shortly after pizza-gate, I prepared a fresh tossed salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette for dinner.
As usual, I made more than necessary, and the leftover salad, already dressed, would likely have ended up in the trash. However, my husband, who cleaned up after dinner, stored the salad in a glass container and placed it in the fridge.
The next day, he ate the leftover salad, now wilted and far from its original state. For this, he earned the title of favorite and a place in the Hall of Fame. We shared a good laugh about his new elevated status. I suppose that is the essence of our crazy competition – the jokes we share as our tradition evolves.
Over the years, I have sincerely tried to ensure that my family stays close with family get-togethers, holiday traditions, and creating lasting memories. In the end, our silly inside jokes bring us together more than a big family vacation, reminding us that finding humor in the mundane is a blessing.
Recently, we ordered pizza and had a few slices remaining. I assumed my son would enjoy them for lunch the next day. However, when he opened the fridge, the pizza was mysteriously missing.
Susan Rosser is the editor of South Florida Family Life and although she encourages others to finish leftovers, she rarely participates – unless it’s pizza.
