Ibis Bridge Replacement is Scheduled to Start in August

Replacement of the Ibis Bridge, located on Lighthouse Drive between NE 29th Street and NE 30th Street, is scheduled to start at the end of August. The Ibis Bridge, which was built in 1950 over the Ibis Waterway, has been designated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as structurally deficient, but is not a public safety hazard. FDOT will carry out and fund the replacement of the bridge at an estimated cost of $1.5 million. During the construction work, a maintenance of traffic plan will be in place with detours north and south of the bridge. Construction of the new bridge is anticipated to last about 18 months. Last month, Broward County was working to verify, through a hired vendor using a water jet

device, the exact location of a force main and two water mains that are underneath the canal and bridge. The construction work involves driving piles on both sides of the utilities and, as discussed at a city commission meeting in May, FDOT and city officials were keen to have the utilities located correctly, especially in light of the sewage spill that occurred in Pompano Beach in January when a force main was ruptured during an FDOT construction project. As a result of the incident, approximately 50 million gallons of raw sewage flowed into local canals. According to Public Works Director Charles Schramm, FDOT doesn’t want that to happen “ever again, anywhere.” The Ibis Bridge is the last of the four bridges along Lighthouse Drive to be replaced. Y

City Hires Consultant to Review and Rewrite City Code

The current Ibis Bridge

The City has hired the Wantman Group, Inc. (WGI) to review and rewrite the entire City code, which hasn’t been fully reviewed since the 1970s. The goal is to make the code more cohesive and user-friendly, both for City personnel and residents. The City Commission, at its May 28 meeting, approved a contract with WGI in the amount of $149,490 to carry out the work, which is expected to take about nine months to complete. Numerous ordinances have been codified through the years, and sometimes they are not consistent with the rest of the code. WGI, based in West Palm Beach, will be tasked with looking for any conflicts or inconsistencies both within the code, and between applicable state statutes, and will provide revisions. The firm will also identify any confusing verbiage and technical jargon in the code and provide revisions that are clearly understandable to citizens and laypeople. WGI will suggest changes or deletions for anything in the current code that is obsolete. For example, provisions for types of businesses that no longer exist would be removed, and the use of the male pronoun in older ordinances would be updated to something that is gender neutral. The City also wants WGI to propose new tables and graphics that illustrate regulations and help the reader better interpret the code. >>>

City Selects Architectural Firm To Design Bond Projects The City has selected Currie Sowards Aguila Architects(CSAA), based in Delray Beach, to design all five projects that will be built with proceeds from the $16.5 million bond issue approved by Lighthouse Point voters last November. The City advertised a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) for an architect on March 15, and received proposals from 15 architectural firms based in South Florida. The proposals were opened on April 15 and reviewed by a selection committee, which chose six firms to give presentations. The committee gave CSAA top ranking, which the City Commission approved. The ranking of the proposers was based on qualifications and not on a cost proposal. “We were able to get 15 of the finest architectural firms in our region to respond to this, so we were very pleased with that,” said Bill Gallo of Gallo Herbert Architects, the firm that the City hired to serve as the construction project manager. The bond projects that will be designed by CSAA are a new twostory fire station that will include an emergency operations center on the upper floor, and will be rated for a category 5+ storm; a new community center at Dan Witt Park; a new public works fleet maintenance building; renovation of the existing public works building; and the buildout of a second-floor community room in the library. During its 50-year history, CSAA has had extensive experience in designing municipal projects, including fire stations in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Beach, Miami Beach and Pompano Beach. In addition to its portfolio of fire rescue and emergency operations projects, CSAA has been involved in the design of municipal community

firms interviewed were technically qualified to carry out the bond projects competently, “but we really wanted a firm that would pay attention to the fact that this is the City of Lighthouse Point. These are gateway projects, and we wanted high-level participation in our projects.” The selection committee also included the city administrator,

centers, theaters and amphitheaters, as well as numerous clubhouse projects, luxury hotels and restaurant venues. CSAA is also known for its bold design of the Pier Parking Garage in Pompano Beach. Completed in 2016, the five-story parking garage – which is part of the beachside development project known the Pompano Beach Fishing Village – features large LED-lit canvas sails and a giant

aquatic mural on its exterior. CSAA also designed the enhancements to Pompano’s Atlantic Boulevard Bridge that were completed last month. The firm was involved in developing the master plan for the Old School Square Cultural Arts Complex and the Pineapple Grove Main Street project in Delray Beach, which served as catalysts for the city’s revitalization. Gallo, who was on the selection committee that ranked the architectural firms, told the Commission that every one of the six

fire chief, police chief, public works director, library director and recreation director. While the committee had considered hiring more than one firm to design the projects, it was determined that because the work will be done in phases, one firm could handle all five projects, which will be easier to manage administratively. Now that an architectural firm has been selected, the City is advertising for a construction manager, who will then hire the subcontractors. Y JULY 2019 | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

Lighthouse Point Police Officers Receive Recognition From FBI In Exploitation Case Three Lighthouse Point police officers received special recognition from FBI Director Christopher Wray for the significant role they played in the investigation of an exploitation case involving a missing 15-year-old Lighthouse Point girl. Sergeant David Dyess, Detective Andrew Gianino and Corporal Michael Kruse were presented with recognition certificates by FBI Violent Crime Supervisor James Lewis and FBI Agent Ellie Bray of the South Florida FBI Bureau in Miramar. The ceremony took place on May 30 at the Lighthouse Point Police Department. In the case that the officers successfully resolved, an out-of-state 28-year-old man befriended the Lighthouse Point girl through social media, and over the course of time, developed a relationship with her. When the girl went missing one day, the Lighthouse Point officers began their investigation. According to Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata, they started interviewing people, talking with the girl’s friends, reviewing social media accounts, checking phone records, and tracking conversations the girl was having with people online. The officers were able to determine that the man had driven from Wisconsin to Florida with the intention of picking up the girl. The police managed to get the man’s cell phone number, and with the help of cell phone carriers, were able to track his location through several different states as he was heading back to Wisconsin. It wasn’t until the man stopped his car at a restaurant in Lebanon, Indiana that local authorities, who were alerted by the Lighthouse Point police, were able to intercept him and

recover the girl. “It was a very rural area, so it took a lot of searching up there,” said Licata. The girl was physically unharmed, and was brought back to Lighthouse Point. The man was arrested on federal charges and was just recently sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. This is the second time that Lighthouse Point police officers have received a recognition certificate from the FBI. The first time was for a case in 2014 in which an adult male was found to have been exploiting a juvenile female. The 24-year-old male was the 14-year-old girl’s biology teacher at a Christian school in Deerfield Beach. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. The FBI does not give out recognition certificates very often, said Licata. “If it’s a serious case in which local law enforcement provides instrumental assistance in the solution of a federal crime, then the FBI will take the initiative to recognize officers for their efforts, and these were two pretty serious cases,” said Licata. Y

New Code <<<

In its analysis of the code, WGI will pay particular attention to the Land Development Code and the development review process, and will propose changes as needed, ensuring the revisions are consistent with the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The scope of work also includes adding definitions to each code section as needed, and simplifying the fee schedule, particularly the sections pertaining to building permit fees and fire department fees for plan review, inspection of new construction and annual fire inspections. WGI will hold multiple meetings and workshops with the City Commission, Planning and Zoning Board, Community Appearance Board, Code Enforcement Board and City Administration to get their input regarding what issues need to be addressed. The City’s current code of ordinances can be viewed online at city.lighthousepoint.com/ code-of-ordinances. Y

Lighthouse Point Police Department Launches New Autism Outreach Program Last month, the Lighthouse Point Police Department launched LHPPD Cares, a new special needs outreach program designed to help improve interactions and relationships between members of the police department and those in the community living with autism. Lighthouse Point residents are now able to voluntarily provide pertinent information about their autistic family members that will help police officers be better prepared, and have a better understanding of any behavioral challenges that may exist, when responding to calls for assistance. The information provided will be entered into an autism outreach file and kept confidential for police personnel only. “We do get called upon to help family members deal with individuals who have behavioral problems, some that are autistic,” said Lighthouse Point Police Chief Ross Licata. “We recognize there’s a need for a program like this in our community, and other places.” In some cases, a person with autism could be acting out or

Some people with autism may have very limited communication skills, or may be sensitive to touch, people getting too close, being looked directly in the eye, loud noises or flashing lights. The person may appear to be agitated or under the influence, and if the police don’t know the person has an autism or behavioral problem, they may think the person is being disruptive or noncooperative, said Licata. The purpose of the new program is to try to alert police officers before they get to an address where an autistic person may be displaying those signs, which can help the officers know how to communicate with the person and what to expect.

“The more information you have leading up to a police encounter, the better off it’s going to be for the police and the autistic person,” said Licata. A few years ago, the state of

Florida made it a requirement that police personnel be trained in how to interact with people with autism, and how to recognize some of the indicators of behavioral problems. The creation of LHPPD Cares originated at a recent meeting of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association, where all of the municipalities represented made the decision that they were going to initiate a program to help their law enforcement agencies deal with people with special needs, including those with autism. “I think the program exemplifies the type of policing that we do,” said Licata, “because here in Lighthouse Point, we really do care about the people that we serve, and we want to be able to provide outstanding services and resources to every resident under every circumstance.” Anyone wishing to participate in the program can go to the Lighthouse Point Police Department website (lhppd.com) and complete an online form, or download, print and bring the completed form to the police department. The completed online form will automatically be sent to the program coordinator, Community Policing Officer Paul McCormick, who will then enter the information into a confidential database. A printed copy of the form may also be obtained at the front desk of the police department (3701 NE 22nd Ave., Lighthouse Point), to be completed and returned for processing. Y

City Commission Implements Planning and Zoning Board Change Approved By Voters The City Commission, at its May 28 meeting, adopted an ordinance that implemented an amendment approved by Lighthouse Point voters last November to remove provisions for the Planning and Zoning Board from the City’s charter and place them in the City’s code of ordinances. The amendment was proposed so changes pertaining to the board’s members, meetings and duties could be made by the City Commission through adoption of ordinances, rather than charter amendments requiring approval by voter referendum. The new ordinance removed the provisions contained in Section 4 of the charter, “City planning and zoning board,” and codified them into two sections of the City’s code, which were completely rewritten. Under the newly revised code, the number of regular Planning and

Zoning Board members remains at five, but the number of alternate members has increased from two to four, to help ensure there is a full board of five people at every meeting. In addition, the terms of board members, who are appointed by resolution of the City Commission, are now three years instead of one year, which is consistent with most of the City’s other boards. Terms will now be staggered to avoid having the entire board reappointed every year. The new ordinance clarifies the qualifications needed for individuals to be appointed as regular members or alternates to the Planning and Zoning Board, as well as the authorized process for participation by alternates at meetings, and the duties of the Planning and Zoning Board. The ordinance also provides additional criteria required for the board to grant

Student Wins State Pole-Vaulting Championship Cardinal Gibbons High School senior Jimmy Nutt won the high school state pole vault championship at the University of North Florida state track meet on May 4. Nutt competed against 24 other 2A level high school pole-vaulters and set a new record for high school seniors by clearing 15”1’. As a senior, Nutt has also won the City of Fort Lauderdale Championship, Broward County Championship, District Championship and Regional Championships, and plans to continue to vault at the collegiate level. a variance. For the duties of the board, sections of the City’s Land Development Code provide for roles of the board on various topics. While the ordinance doesn’t add any new duties, it includes a list of those topics in one place for easier reference in determining whether an application or item requires the board’s approval. The Planning and Zoning Board will be reviewing significant upcoming projects in the city, including the redevelopment of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, the new fire station and other projects that are being funded with proceeds from the City’s $16.5 million bond issue. As of June 2019, the Planning and Zoning Board regular monthly meetings take place at 6:30pm, instead of 7:30pm, at the Lighthouse Point City Hall complex. Y

Personal Development

Be a Dealer of Praise, Encouragement and Positivity BY CRAIG HALEY

I WAS RECENTLY GOING THROUGH SOME FOLDERS IN MY EMAIL ACCOUNT TO SEE IF I STILL NEEDED THE MESSAGES. TRUTH BE TOLD I AM AN “ANTI-CLUTTER” person to begin with and got fired up about “killing the clutter” in my life because I had just listened to a podcast on strategies to de-clutter your life. [If you are interested in that, checkout the HPX Podcast and listen to the “De-clutter Your Life with Chalene Johnson.” Good stuff!] I came across a voicemail message I received from one of my mentors, Jeffrey Gitomer. Jeffrey teaches sales, leadership and business strategies to sales professionals and entrepreneurs. I remember a seminar I went to of his in Orlando where he talked about making your business standout. He said most businesses give potential customers a brochure with a bunch of pointless information about the company. What do most people do with that brochure? They throw it in the garbage! His recommendation was to give them a trash can with your company’s logo on it so they have a place to put the brochure. Plus, you will make them laugh. He also recommended you write a book and use that as your brochure. At first, I thought there was no way I could write a book. It seemed like a lot of work, and a book was one of those things that really smart authors did. After a lot of thinking, I thought, “If Jeffrey said to do it, I’m going to do it.” I blocked off 60 minutes first thing every morning and for two weeks I wrote, and wrote and wrote. After the writing was done, I found an editor online. Next, I contacted my graphic arts person and had them design a cover. After all that, I had a small 42-page book to give to my students and potential students. Hopefully, it would do what Jeffrey said: It would help me establish myself as the local expert in my field. I was excited and decided to mail him a copy along with a thank you note for the advice he had given at the seminar. I wasn’t expecting to hear back from him. After all, he is a New York Times best-selling author, and his book, “The Sales Bible” is the top selling sales book of all time. About a week later, he called me! I had forgotten to forward the phones to my cell phone, so the voicemail was sent to my email. I listened to it, and sure enough, Jeffrey had called me to congratulate me. Plus, he wanted to give me some advice on how to use my book. I eagerly called back and had an incredible conversation with this guy I looked up to. I listened to his praise and took notes…a lot of notes.

When I was clearing out my old email messages, that voicemail from June 3, 2016 made me smile and reminded me of the power of praise, the power of a compliment and the power of encouragement. We all thrive on praise and recognition. One of the most effective teaching strategies we use at Elite Force Martial Arts is called “Praise Your Champions.” It’s when we praise the sharpest, most enthusiastic kids in class. By praising them, the less motivated kids pick up the pace because they want to be praised in front of the class. My encouragement for you is to be the dealer of praise, encouragement and positivity in your circle of influence. Who could you praise that deserves it? Who could you encourage that needs it? Think of yourself as a gold-miner back in the gold rush. They weren’t looking for dirt, they were looking for gold. Look for untapped potential in people, search for talents that someone may not see in themselves. In the book “The Go-Giver Leader,” authors Bob Burg and John David Mann said, “Give people something good to live up to – something great – and they usually will.” Truly effective leaders don’t push people, they pull them. They role model the way and pull them to the next level through seeing the best in them, encouraging them, praising achievements and effort, and repeating the process over and over and over again. Don’t belittle people. Be-big them! Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

Tidbits & Trivia

Be Thankful for Flies and Mosquitoes BY JIM TERLIZZI

NEXT TIME YOU ARE ABOUT TO SWAT A FLY OR MOSQUITO, THINK TWICE. FLIES, MOSQUITOES AND ASSORTED OTHER INSECTS MAY BE THE ONLY THINGS KEEPING THE ENTIRE WORLD POPULATION FROM BEING CONSUMED — BY SPIDERS. A study in the journal Science of Nature determined that spiders eat 400-million to 800-million tons of prey every year. Since the total biomass of all humans is about 360-million tons, spiders could eat all of us and still have room for a crème brûlée.

Average spider density is about 131 per square meter. Chances are if you feel eyes on you while reading this, an arachnid is considering you as an item on his menu. If you put all the spiders in the world on a scale, they would weigh roughly 25-million tons. That’s the equivalent of 250 fully loaded Nimitz-class aircraft carriers or 200-billion McDonalds

58

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

“Big Macs” (before cooking). But, before you get to worrying about spider-armageddon, there is a ray of hope. While these arthropods are masters of engineering, as witness the complicated webs they spin, they are cerebrally-challenged in another way — they have short memories. Take Stanley for example. Stanley is a stealth-fighter-airplaneshaped spider who lives in my front yard. Every night Stanley builds his web from the foliage and attaches it to the car door. Every morning I drive away taking the web with me. Now, Stanley either has a memory problem or he is playing with me. Since I also suffer from forgetfulness, I get a face full of web every morning as I get to the car. I could swear that Stanley is grinning at me as I do my spider-web-removal dance. Or, maybe he just hasn’t figured out that his web is not strong enough to capture something of my size. Either way, I think we’re safe. When I was a kid I had a pet spider named Ralph that lived in the cellar. He spun his web in the lone window and I was fascinated by the light shining through it. Every day I would catch flies and put them in the web. We would have lunch together, with Ralph gorging on flies and me scarfing down a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This went on for years, until Ralph got to be the size of a horseshoe crab. This was not a problem, since no one ever went into the cellar, until one day my mother decided to look for some mason jars. Her scream was worthy of a Wes Craven horror movie. The next day I went to look for Ralph but he was not to be found. Heartsick, I asked my parents what happened to him. My father explained that he had gotten too big and needed more room, so they took him to the retired spider farm. I asked where the farm was and my father said “Tupelo, Mississippi”. I smiled. If that was good enough for Elvis, it was good enough for Ralph. Y

Get Psyched

Is It Time for Medication? BY DR. JILL SELBACH

BEING TRAINED AS A PSYCHOLOGIST, I BELIEVE IN THE POSITIVE EFFECT DIFFERENT MODES OF TALK THERAPY HAVE ON PEOPLE. HOWEVER, BEING A PSYCHOLOGIST WHO trained in a hospital alongside psychiatry residents, I know how beneficial medication can be in the treatment of many psychological disorders. But for many, the decision about when medication is warranted is tough to make. In our society of immediate gratification and quick fixes, we have been conditioned to reach for the easy way — a pill.

Things that people used to do that took hours of practice or time investment aren’t seen much anymore. Where medication is concerned, it is determining if living with the symptoms is worse than the potential side effects. Children whose parents are struggling to determine if it is time to look into medication are one of the groups that come to mind. I offer these things to think about: if the parent child relationship is suffering, if teachers are losing patience with the child in class, if

60

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

peers are beginning to push the child away, if the child is starting to define him or herself as a “bad kid” and this erodes his or her self-esteem. This is when other disorders can develop and further complicate the healthy development of a child, and a medication consultation should be sought with a skilled child psychiatrist. It is also important to note that prescribing psychotropic medication is something that psychiatrists spend a three year residency learning. Although primary care physicians and pediatricians are capable of writing prescriptions, they don’t have the same training and experience as psychiatrists. So, medication definitely has its place and can be life changing for some people. However, as I say, “Pills don’t teach skills.” Especially with anxiety and depression, people need to change their thinking and behaviors. This is unbelievably effective if people can consistently work on this with the guidance of a professional. The New York Times analyzed federal data and found that antidepressant use is on the rise. Approximately 15.5 million Americans have been taking these medications for at least five years; a rate that has almost doubled since 2010, and more than tripled since 2000. Many patients do not understand that these medications take time to be effective in ameliorating symptoms and they don’t realize that they may be on these meds for lengthy periods of time. People who have been on antidepressants for years are now reporting difficulty when trying to discontinue the drugs. These drugs need to be discontinued under the supervision of a doctor. Some people experienced symptoms like balance problems, insomnia and anxiety as they decreased their dosage and discontinued the drugs. It is important when considering medication to speak to a qualified professional and be educated and prepared to ask questions about benefits, side effects, duration of treatment, interactions with other meds and ease of discontinuation. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. For more information visit drjillselbach.com or call 954-618-8412.

Cantankerously Yours

Alexa, Play “Those Were the Days” BY WENDELL ABERN

DEAR READERS, When I was about 13 years old, I became infatuated with the world of science fiction. I read everything I could by Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Fredric Brown and anyone else whose superb, imaginative writings appeared in monthly science fiction magazines. How incredibly ironic that I am now living in the world they foresaw ... and hate it. Ergo, I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I have now moved back into the world of 1962, where I intend to remain for the rest of my days. A few recent experiences have forced me to do so. Last month, I came a bit early to my Wednesday afternoon bridge game, sat down and started kibitzing with Esther, my opponent (neither of our partners had arrived yet). Next month, we’re giving Esther a 90th birthday party. She is the sweetest little octogenarian in the country, but a fierce competitor. Secretly, I call her Atilla the Hun. My cellphone rang. I plucked it out of my pocket, flipped it open and heard a sales pitch; turned it off, flipped it closed and was ready to return it to my pocket when Atilla said, “Wait! Can I see that?” “What, my phone? Of course.” I handed it to her. “Isn’t that cute!” she said. “What do you call this?” “Well, I call it a dumbphone.” Her partner, who had just arrived, said, “It’s just an oldfashioned flip phone, Esther.” “But why don’t you have a smartphone?” Atilla asked me. “Everyone has a smartphone.” “Yes, I know. I’m thinking of getting one,” I lied. “You should. They’re really portable computers, you know.” Wonderful. Someone older than I am giving me technological advice. On my way home from the game, I stopped at a gas station to fill my tires. A machine delivered air for $1.50. I paid for air! Air now costs money! Back in 1962, it didn’t cost a penny.

Every Thanksgiving and Passover, my friends Shel and Nadine invite me to have dinner with them at their club in Boca Woods. Best meals I eat all year. The afternoons start off with Shel and me smoking cigars on their patio while Nadine paints. (Nadine has become a renowned abstractist and now even has her own line of vases, clothes, purses, et al.) This Passover, as Shel and I were lounging, she joined us briefly and asked if I wanted to hear some Sinatra. “Of course!” I said. “Alexa,” she said, “play some Sinatra.” “Frank Sinatra,” Alexa answered. “I didn’t know you had an Alexa,” I said, settling back with my cigar while Sinatra crooned, “It Was Just One of Those Things.” Determined to win one over technology. I said, “Okay, Alexa. Please send Halle Berry to this house.” Shel and Nadine chuckled. Pause. Alexa said, “I don’t know that one.” “What do you mean, ‘You don’t know that one?’” I yelled. “I’m not talking about a piano concerto! Halle Berry is a beautiful actress. Please send her here.” “I don’t know that one,” she repeated. “Terrific,” I said. “Alexa continues a lifelong string of women who won’t do what I want. And she’s a machine yet.” “Have another cigar,” Shel said. On April 30, I read two articles in the Sun-Sentinel that proved conclusively I belong in the year 1962 ... that I am not mentally prepared for the technological advances the rest of you seem to devour. >>>

One article, headlined, “To mind the store, Walmart is mining Artificial Intelligence.” The article pointed out that the giant retailer has recently opened an Intelligent Retail Lab inside a 50,000 square-foot Neighborhood Market grocery store on Long Island. As I read, I thought, Okay, I have no idea what a retail lab is, let alone an intelligent one. So I continued reading. The article “clarified” things for me: “Thousands of cameras suspended from the ceiling will monitor the store in real time so workers can quickly replenish products ... spot spills, track when shelves need to be replenished ... and even determine how ripe bananas are.” Just what I need. A camera to guide me when I pick out produce. The article goes on to explain that “the lab is testing new features around a Scan & Go App, which lets customers scan items as they shop and then buy from their phones, skipping the checkout line.” No more checkout lines. Fine. But back here in 1962, things are much more pleasant. I mean, I may be 86 years old, but I still love to flirt with cashiers. And then there was the other article, about a firm called Magic Leap. Magic Leap, a Plantation-based startup, introduced its first product – Magic Leap One – in December of 2017: goggles that let users interact with digital content in the real world. Or, as the article states, “a wearable computer.” A wearable computer?! What?! Wait’ll Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan hear about this! They and the rest of the world’s designers are going to be flooding the market with headbands in every color! And who knows what will be marching down the runway at the next Victoria’s Secret TV special. Wearable computers?!! I can’t wait to walk into the men’s department at Macy’s next year and say, “I’d like a pin-striped computer to match my blue suit, please.” On the other hand, I might have to use my computer to order a computer; by next year, every retail outlet in the country will probably be digitized. I sincerely hope all of you are enjoying your lives in today’s science fiction world. But I really don’t know how you cope. The technological revolution we’re groping through keeps exploding exponentially; by the time we harness the capabilities of some new discovery, that very discovery creates two new ones. So I cordially invite all of you to join me back here in 1962, where life is far more comfortable. Even with only a photo of Halle Berry. Y

Try the Wine

What’s Up With Rosé? BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

WHAT IS UP WITH ROSÉ WINE? WHY IS A PURPOSEFULLY UNDERSTATED BEVERAGE SO POPULAR? If you drink wine, chances are at one time or another you’ve had a glass of rosé, that pink or cantaloupe-colored wine that neither looks or tastes like any other. If you liked it, you probably thought it was pleasant. But you might not have pondered on it, at least not like you would a fullbodied red wine. As the prominent wine writer, Jancis Robinson, once wrote, “If ever a wine was made not to be taken seriously, it’s rosé.” If wine has destiny, rosé’s is to be low-key. And yet, rosé wine seems to be in abundance wherever I shop for wine. It’s prominently on display in wine shops, especially this time of year. In fact, it may be the only wine that’s now grouped by color, while other wines continue to be organized by country, region, grape variety or wine type. Bigger stores might sell a dozen or more different rosé wines from many countries, notably France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa and both coasts of the United States. (Yes, there’s even rosé — pretty good, too — from Long Island, New York). It helps that rosé wines remain relatively inexpensive. Most good ones sell in the $10-25 per bottle range at retail, and are still reasonably priced at bars and restaurants. If you’ve seen a rosé wine section or display, you’ll notice that rosé wines come in a rainbow of pink, light crimson and pale orange colors. That’s because these wines are made using a wide variety of grapes and winemaking methods, which I’ll get to momentarily. And then there are

the bottles! They’re clear, of course, so they show each wine’s particular hue. Also, they come in an assortment of traditional to strange shapes and designs. Some are long flower vase or amphora-like affairs and a few are squat, chubby glass ovals. Also, many of the bottles are adorned with fancy lettering, floral themes and enticing names like “Diving into Hampton Water.” (If, by the way, you don’t care what color your rosé wine is, you also can buy it cheaply in a can or a box — but what’s the fun in that?) It would appear someone is working hard to get our attention. And rightly so! Rosé wine is big business. It makes up at least 13 percent of all wine consumed in the U.S., much of it imported from France where celebrities like Jon Bon Jovi, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have aggressively invested in producing rosé wines. French rosé now accounts for about 35 percent of France’s total wine production; and since 2010, French rosé exports to the U.S. more than quadrupled. Rosé sales appear to keep rising every year among both men and women, so winemakers and marketers in many countries are working hard to get us to buy their pink treasures.

Getting Serious About Rosé

So for a few moments, let’s get serious about rosé. What is it? How does it get to be that color? And are there real differences among some rosé wines that you might favor over other others? To answer the first question, there is no single definition for rosé wine or single way to make it. Knowing a little bit about how rosé is made, however, helps in understanding why rosé’s colors, tastes and other attributes vary. First, rosé wines are made with many different types of grapes, usually red grapes commonly grown where the wine is made. In France, for example, grenache, syrah, mourvèdre and cinsault are most often used, while tempranillo and other local varietals are used in Spain. And so it goes in other wine growing regions. As a result, rosés from France, >>>

Try the Wine <<< Spain, Italy and other places tend to differ in taste and smell. So if mostly red wine grapes are used to make rosé, why is it pink? Without getting into the details, the reason is that to make rosé, red grape juice and pulp, which is nearly colorless (squeeze one if you don’t believe me), can be left in contact with their red skins for only hours instead of days or weeks. Prolonged contact with red grape skins during the wine making process gives red wines their distinctive garnet or deep purple colors, vital tannins and certain other qualities. When this contact is limited to 2-48 hours, the skins impart only enough red pigment and tannin to color and flavor the juice and pulp lightly. Another result of this shortened winemaking process is that rosé wines typically have a short shelf life and are best consumed within a year or two after their vintage year.

Sampling Rosé

So how much do rosé wines vary? To help answer this question, I tried a number of rosé wines (listed at the end of this article). Two were from France, and one each was from Italy, Portugal, Spain and the U.S. It was far from a comprehensive sample. It was sufficient though, along with my memory of other rosés, to conclude that these wines do indeed differ, although most also had many similar qualities. Personally, I reconfirmed my preference for the rosé wines of southern France, particularly Provence. They consistently balance pleasing color, flavors and aromas. Focusing on the similarities, all the wines we tried, with one exception, were easy-drinking but pleasantly

understated. They were fragrant with floral and light fruit scents, like strawberry and melon. Most had light berry, melon or mild citrus tastes. A few had some fizz. Some were drier than others, and all but one were low in alcohol compared to red wines. Also, they were all remarkably flexible with food, going well with appetizers, salads, fish and vegetable dishes, as well as many other foods. I didn’t eat steak with any of these wines. However, I did enjoy some with a grilled hamburger and, on another occasion, with Italian-spiced sausage and tomato sauce over pasta. Part of the beauty of rosé is that it seems to get along with just about everyone and everything.

Tasting Notes

Here are some of my tasting notes. Note that you may not find the wines below where you shop or eat, but there are many others equally as good. If you stick to the $10-$25 range, don’t be afraid to grab a bottle or two you haven’t tried before, even if you pick based mainly on color and bottle design. • 2018 Ott Cote de Provence Rosé, Domaine Ott ($18-21): Textbook rosé with a lovely color and ideal blend of floral scents, strawberry and other mild fruit flavors. A favorite by a prominent winery. • 2018 Chateau de Pibaron Bandol Rosé, LaCadiere d’Azur ($28-32): Cantaloupe color with ripe cantaloupe, strawberry and floral aromas. More complex. Quite dry, a bit tannic with 13.5 percent alcohol and subtle mineral and fruit flavors. Better the next day. • 2018 Leone de Castris Five Roses Rosato, Salento, Italy ($17-20): Reddish pink. Floral/citrus aromas with pink grapefruit flavors and a light acidic “pop.” Italy’s oldest commercial rosé wine producer. • Portugal: 2018 Pedra Cancela Touriga Nacional Vinho Rosé, Dao ($10-13): Pale pink with exotic floral, strawberry and orange aromas and strawberry and melon tastes. Delightful. • Spain: 2018 Ameztoi Rubentis Rosado, Getariko Tzakolina ($19-22): Pink orange with a bit of spritz and surprising banana, pineapple and apple flavor set. Light, refreshing and quite nice. • United States: 2018 Wolffer Estate Rosé Table Wine, Long Island, NY ($14-16): Pale orange-pink. Citrus, apple, pear aromas. Tasty fruit mixture supplemented with noticeable carbonation. Kick back and enjoy. • Some other names to look for: France: Saint Aix, Bertrand, D’Esclans, Diving into Hampton Water, Guigal, Maris, Miravel, Viallet, Whispering Angel; Spain: Muga, Breca; Portugal: Cabriz; United States: Kendall-Jackson, La Crema, Martin Ray, Pisoni, Charles Smith, Tablas Creek. Y Next month’s column will be about pairing wine and food.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Wrap the garlic in foil and roast in the oven until cloves are soft, about 1 hour. Remove from the oven. Once the garlic is cool enough to handle, squeeze the garlic from the skins into a bowl and mash it up into a paste. Add the chives and set aside. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk the sour cream and milk together. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda. Add the grated butter and toss using your hands to coat butter well. Add the milk mixture and the garlic and chives and knead the dough with your hands until it comes together. It will be clumpy. Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a dough. Form into a rectangle and dust with flour. Roll out into a 9-by-12-inch rectangle and fold into thirds like a letter. Rotate the dough 90 degrees, dust with more flour and repeat this process two more times. (This is called laminating will create those flaky layers.) Roll dough into a 9-by-12-inch rectangle and trim the outer ¼ inch. (This will help the dough rise.) Cut into equal squares and transfer to one of the prepared sheet pans. Cover in plastic and refrigerate 30 minutes. Remove the biscuits from the refrigerator and move half of them to the other sheet pan, leaving two inches between each biscuit. Beat one egg and add a touch of water or milk. Brush the biscuits with the egg wash and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Place the two sheet pans of biscuits in the oven and rotate the trays halfway through. Bake until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Serve warm.

1 ½ pounds baby potatoes, cut into bite sized pieces 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, minced (optional) ½ bunch asparagus, blanched and sliced into ¼ inch pieces olive oil kosher salt

FOR THE DRESSING

2 2 1 ½

tablespoons grainy mustard tablespoons fresh lemon juice teaspoon salt teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ½ teaspoon sugar ½ cup olive oil 1 clove garlic minced

Peachy Pork Tenderloin Serves 5-7

I N G R E D I E N TS

2 ¾ ¼ 1 1 3-4 3-4

pork tenderloins cup peach jam cup soy sauce garlic clove, grated tablespoon rice wine vinegar peaches, halved and pits removed pinch of cayenne pepper (or more) scallions, sliced diagonally kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

In a small bowl combine the peach jam, soy sauce, garlic, vinegar and cayenne pepper. Take about a ¼ cup of the marinade and put it in a separate bowl. Reserve the rest of the marinade in a large dish (to hold the two pork tenderloins after they are cooked) and set aside. Brush the ¼ cup of marinade on the pork and sprinkle with kosher salt. Brush some marinade on the peaches too. Place the pork and on a grill and cook on all sides. Cook until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees. Also place the peaches on the grill cut side down. After the peaches get a char on them, flip and cook for a few more minutes. Remove the pork and peaches from the grill. Place the pork into the reserved marinade and cover with foil and let sit for 10 minutes. It will continue to cook a bit and soak up the flavor. Slice the pork and spoon the rest of the marinade over the pork. Arrange the pork and cooked peaches on a platter and sprinkle the scallions on top.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss the potatoes with enough olive oil to coat and sprinkle with the rosemary and a pinch of kosher salt. Roast about an hour. In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice, mustard, salt, pepper, sugar and garlic. Slowly whisk in the olive oil until the dressing is totally emulsified. Set aside. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the asparagus in the water until they turn bright green — just 1 or 2 minutes. Remove the asparagus and transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking. Once they are cool, slice to about ¼ inch pieces. When the potatoes are done, transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Pour about half the dressing over the potatoes. Add the sliced asparagus and toss to combine. Serve warm or at room temperature with the extra dressing on the side because some people like extra dressing and they shouldn’t be denied. Once combined, place the sauce in a small bowl. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees To make the garlic bread, in a small bowl, mash the garlic with butter and olive oil to form a paste. Cut the bread in half lengthwise and spread the garlic butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and a touch of Parmesan cheese if using. Wrap the bread tightly in foil and cook in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. You can turn the oven off and leave the bread in for a for a few more minutes to keep warm. Sprinkle the steak liberally with kosher salt. Cook on a super-hot grill for about 3 minutes on each side for medium rare. You can use a meat thermometer, or I just usually poke it with my finger to test for doneness. (Here’s a tip. While the meat is still raw, poke it with your finger so you know what that feels like as a baseline. As the meat cooks it will have more resistance and feel firmer to your poking.) Remove the meat and place on a cutting board. Sprinkle cooked steak with freshly ground black pepper and tent loosely with foil. Let the meat rest for 10-15 minutes. Slice the steak opposite the grain and place on the garlic bread. Top with chimichurri and serve more on the side. Slice the sandwiches into individual portions. POMPANO BEACH’S LIVE! RESORTS POMPANO AIMS TO BECOME ONE OF LARGEST MIXED-USE PROJECTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

A

nticipation continues to grow as new steps are taken to make Live! Resorts Pompano a reality. Live! Resorts Pompano is the rebranded redevelopment project at the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park owned by Eldorado Resorts and Cordish Companies. The project is pushing to become one of the largest mixed-use projects in South Florida, including a casino, the Live! Event venue, a commercial sports venue,

Renderings of what the project could look like:

restaurants, a hotel, a driving range called Topgolf, a lake, open green space and 300,000 square feet of additional commercial uses such as retail, restaurants and a movie theater. The project is branded Live! as part of the Live! entertainment destinations brand by Cordish Companies., which includes some high profile sports and entertainment destinations across the country, such as Texas Live!, Xfinity Live!, Kansas City Live! and Fox Sports Midwest Live! On June 5 Pompano Beach’s Development Review Committee reviewed a “Land Use Plan Text Amendment” in order to change the entitlements to add residential units and adjust nonresidential

square footages. The applicant requested approval of a total density increase from the plot amendments, which would add 764,478 square feet of commercial space, 1.31 million square feet of commercial recreation uses, 951,350 square feet of office space, 1,300 residential units and 250 hotel rooms to what’s currently permitted. The underlying land use will remain RAC (Regional Activity Center). At a community meeting held on April 30, Cordish presented a preliminary overview of the project and said it is slated for groundbreaking in the summer of 2020 with the full buildout, done in phases, taking at least 10 years. The developers currently have a pending rezoning application, which details those phases. The first phase of the site plan shows the Topgolf, which would be the first driving range/entertainment destination in

Broward County. Then, the area that currently has a race track would be converted into a lake and open green space. A 300-seat Jai Alai venue would replace horse racing. Additional phases would build out the remaining elements to the project. Eldorado acquired the property through the purchase of 13 casino resorts from Capri Casinos in 2016. The developers are working with planning firm Keith & Associates on the application. Attorney Debbie Orshefsky represents the developers. Elkus Manfredi is the architect. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, seaweed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sriracha. For a taste of New England with a twist, try the lobster roll. Of course you can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what the catch of the day is. While the fresh food is the real star, the Keys-inspired decor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The menu goes way beyond typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wiener schnitzel — it’s divine — a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. In a food processor fitted with the steel blade, mix together the flour, sugar and salt. In a measuring cup, lightly beat the two eggs and add enough heavy cream so you have 2/3 cup. Whisk the cream and egg together. Add the butter to the flour mixture in the food processor. Pulse about 6 times. Don’t overdo it. You are looking for chick pea sized butter pieces. Add the cream mixture in and pulse until it just comes together. Turn the dough out on a floured board and form a large disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 3 days. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Roll out the dough so it is rough 10 x 14-inch rectangle. Place on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment and refrigerate while you are making the filling. To make the filling, mix the berries with the sugar, lemon juice and zest and the cornstarch. You want to leave a 2 inch border around the dough when you are placing the fruit. Place the blueberries in the top left corner forming a square and then fill the rest of the area with the strawberries — so it looks like a flag. Gently start folding the edges over the fruit. Galettes should be rustic so don’t worry if it looks ragged. Brush the pastry with an egg wash made of one egg and a touch of milk or water. Sprinkle the pastry with a touch of sugar.

Bake for 35-45 minutes until the fruit is bubbling. It must be bubbling for the cornstarch to work as a thickener. The crust should be golden. Transfer carefully to a wire rack and let cool. In a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk the cream, sugar and vanilla until it forms stiff peaks. Fill a piping bag fitted with a star tip with the whipped cream and pipe “white stripes” onto the strawberries and “stars” onto the blueberries. Make Betsy Ross proud.
