OPEN YOUR ACCOUNT TODAY AND BE ON YOUR WAY TO EARNING MORE. LIGHTHOUSE POINT 2500 N. Federal Highway | 954-783-4711

QUALIFYING BANKING TRANSACTIONS: • Additional direct deposits • Automatic debits • Point of sale transactions using your BankUnited VISA® Debit Card • Checks posting to and clearing from your account

*A Vertical Rewards Elite Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 2.00% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .50% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. After the Introductory Period, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .50% APY to 2.00% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services (“Qualifying Services”) performed each statement cycle. If the direct deposit and/or the minimum number of Qualifying Services are not met during a statement cycle, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the Base Interest Rate for that statement cycle. APYs stated herein are accurate as of 9/10/2018. APYs stated herein are established by BankUnited, N.A. (“BankUnited”) in its sole discretion and may change at any time. Balances greater than $250,000 are not eligible to, and will not, earn interest or rewards. Minimum opening deposit is $5,000. Transactions must post and settle to the Account during the applicable statement cycle. Banking services transactions may take one or more business days from the transaction date to post to the Account. A $20 monthly maintenance fee will be assessed if the average balance in the Account falls below $5,000 during a statement cycle. A $15 early closeout fee will be assessed if the Account is closed within 6 months of the account opening date. Fees may reduce earnings. Additional fees, terms and conditions apply. Please refer to our applicable product disclosures, Depositor’s Agreement and Schedule of Fees for additional information. BankUnited reserves the right to cancel or modify this offer at any time without notice. Offer is for new consumer accounts only. Please contact a BankUnited representative for additional details.

CREATIVELY SPEAKING

BY SUSAN ROSSER

The Labels We Wear WHEN I WAS A KID, ONE OF MY FRIENDS CASUALLY DECLARED SHE WAS LONG WAISTED. DESPITE THE FACT THAT I DID NOT KNOW WHAT long waisted meant, I quickly chimed in that I too was long waisted. Sure, I could be long waisted. Sounds good. Young girls aim to fit in. Back then, I loved liverwurst on rye with a slice of raw onion. On weekends, my dad would often prepare our favorite sandwich for lunch. But if one were to inquire in front of my friends if I enjoyed liverwurst, I would have turned my nose up in unison with my comrades. Apparently, liverwurst is not popular among the under 12 set. Over the years that followed, I came to learn what long waisted actually meant (this is way before Google) and reconciled myself to the fact that not only was I indeed not long waisted; but that my waist seemed to sit unnaturally close to my head. I was aghast. I was, of all things — short waisted. That just sounds bad. Short waisted. No one wants to be short anything. But then one day it dawned on me. If I was indeed short waisted, then it must stand to reason that I would possess stunningly long legs. I scrambled to the full length mirror only to discover my legs were not the long Barbie-doll-esque limbs I had envisioned. Now I was perplexed. I wondered, if I was not long waisted and I was not long legged — what was the deal with my body? Wherein did my height lie? Well, as it turns out, a good deal of my body’s length extends from my freakishly high waist to the tops of my less-than-stellar legs. This is such an odd shape it has yet to be named. I now know there are many labels for women’s bodies. Apple and pear come to mind, but there are others, and thankfully they don’t include any additional references to bulbous fruits. Sure, cognizance of body types may aid some women in selecting jeans, but the vast majority would likely be able to discern a pair of flattering pants without a comparison to produce.

While in my 20s and enjoying a day at the beach with a few girlfriends, the conversation turned to a mutual acquaintance who everyone unanimously agreed was “so sweet.” The discussion progressed into a session of naming many young women who were also “sweet.” By this point, the warmth of the sun had lulled me into a half-trance and I was not contributing to the list development. Finally, I bolted upright from my towel and declared, “I’m sweet.” My announcement received quite a laugh. My friends were quick to shed light on some of my better qualities; but they all agreed “sweet” was not among them. In truth, I knew this would be their reaction. I had been seeking a laugh all along. Because even though I was in my 20s by this point, I was still the class clown — a label I wore proudly throughout my school years. I have worn many labels. Some good, some not so good. For me, once I had that class clown label on my proverbial lapel it was self fulfilling. But as is so often the case, my clown label was accompanied with an underachiever stamp. “If only she would apply herself” was typically the theme of any teacher conference my parents attended. Let’s face it, we all wear labels: smart, goofy, silly, loud, shy, lazy, ambitious, outgoing, daring, rich, poor and anxious to name a few. Some we like better than others. For me, I’ve tried to hang onto that class clown label, while simultaneously dismantling the underachiever tag. And all these years later, I am pretty sure my love of liverwurst has contributed to what I now realize is my pear-shaped figure; although I identify as hourglass.

AROUND THE POINT PERFORMANCES

Outré Theater Company Presents “The Christians”

Outré Theater Company is known for producing provocative theater that forces viewers to challenge normative ideas. In Outré’s last season at the Pompano Cultural Center, the theater company performed an intriguing — and often controversial— series of shows, including Orwell’s “1984,” a Green Day rock opera called “American Idiot,” a feminist take on Reservoir Dogs called “Reservoir Dolls” and a musical about a transgender rockstar, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” In Outré’s upcoming production of “The Christians” Outré will explore faith, belief and the seemingly insurmountable distance that separates us. “This play, while set in a Protestant Christian church, creates a dialogue that transcends religion, and is incredibly poignant at this time in our nation,” said Skye Whitcomb, Outré’s Artistic Director and the director of the production. “The thing that strikes me most about ‘The Christians’ is that for all the struggle the characters go through, there is no ‘bad guy.’ Every one of these characters is coming from a place of personal truth, of belief, and they struggle with reconciling the differences in their beliefs. There’s this heartbreaking distance between them that tugs at the soul. And one of the most wrenching questions that the play forces us to contemplate is what we should do when those we love believe something that is not only different from what we believe, but believe something that we feel is actually dangerous.” WHEN: Oct. 19 - Nov. 11; Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm; Sundays at 2pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd.

WHEN: Production runs from Oct. 18 to Nov. 4 with both evening and matinee performances available. Marilyn Manson at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

The controversial, anarchist, dark-boy of industrial metal music Marilyn Manson is known as much for his grotesque and shocking antics on stage (including urinating on the crowd and plunging a broken beer bottle into his chest) as he is for his music, which was made famous in the 90s and was even blamed for the Columbine shooting. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Redevelopment Plans BY MARIE PULEO

PROCESS FOR OBTAINING CITY AND COUNTY APPROVALS

STEP

01

Plans for major redevelopment of the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club continue to move forward, but there are still many steps to take in the process of obtaining all the necessary approvals from the city and county. Terry Paterson, developer and part owner of the club, must first get approval for a land use plan amendment, which is needed for rezoning purposes. Paterson is requesting an amendment of 3.4 gross acres of the yacht club property from “commercial recreation” to “multifamily” residential, in order to build 33 three-story luxury townhomes lining the waterfront. Profits from the sale of the townhomes would be used to subsidize the cost to build a state-of-the-art yacht club facility, which would include a new 35,000-square-foot clubhouse. The estimated expense for the development of the club and land is $32 million. The developer has said that he hopes to break ground for the new clubhouse by mid-2019. According to city officials, the process for obtaining the necessary approvals could take nine months to a year, not including building permits.

LAND USE PLAN AMENDMENT

01) LAND USE PLAN AMENDMENT First Steps July 10 - Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Investments, an entity controlled by Paterson, submitted an application to the City for a land use plan amendment, along with a conceptual site plan. They were the first formal documents submitted to the City concerning the yacht club’s redevelopment plans. Aug. 14 - Development Review Committee Meeting. The proposed land use plan amendment and conceptual site plan were reviewed by the city administrator, assistant city attorney, city engineer, city planners, police chief, fire chief, public works director, and civil and traffic engineering consultants. City staff conveyed their comments and concerns to the developer, who was present. Aug. 28 - Public workshop at City Hall. The City Commission and members of the Planning and Zoning Board discussed the proposed land use plan amendment and the conceptual site plan. The developer presented substantial revisions to the plans based on comments from City staff at the Development Review Committee meeting on Aug. 14. The revised plans were not formally submitted to the City, and were seen for the first time at the workshop. There were still concerns about a number of issues, including density, parking, limited access for emergency vehicles and architectural style. The developer said he would submit revised plans to the city in the coming weeks.

meeting will take place to review the revised land use plan amendment request and conceptual site plan submitted to the City by the developer.

B) Another public workshop will be scheduled before the proposed land use plan amendment and conceptual site plan are considered at a Planning and Zoning Board meeting.

C) The Planning and Zoning Board will formally consider the revised land use plan amendment and conceptual site REZONING THE plan. The meeting will include a public PROPERTY hearing (only one is required for the Planning and Zoning Board). The Board will make a recommendation to the City Commission in favor of or against the land use change. The Planning and Zoning Board could ask the developer to make further revisions to the plans, which would come back to the Board for review, before it makes a recommendation to the City Commission. D) The City Commission will vote on the proposed land use plan amendment. A public hearing will take place before the vote. E) The proposed amendment will be sent to the Broward County Planning Council for a hearing, with a recommendation for approval, denial or modification. It will then be reviewed by the Broward County Commission.

STEP

02) REZONING

THE PROPERTY

After the land use plan amendment process is completed, the 3.4 acres of the yacht club property that were changed from “commercial recreation” to “multifamily” residential must be rezoned from B-2A (“planned business district”) to RM-16 (“four-family residential district”). Rezoning is done by ordinance.

05

SITE PLAN APPROVAL AND POSSIBLE VARIANCES IF CITY CODE IS NOT CHANGED

A) The Planning and Zoning Board will review the request and make a recommendation to the City Commission. The meeting includes a public hearing. B) The City Commission will vote twice, at two separate meetings, each with a public hearing.

03) POSSIBLE CODE CHANGES

In the current redevelopment plans for the yacht club, there are numerous items that don’t meet the city’s code of ordinances, such as the parking, dock width and amount of previous space. The developer could request code changes, which are made by ordinance.

A) The Planning and Zoning Board would review the possible code changes at one of its meetings, and then make a recommendation to the City Commission. The meeting would include a public hearing. B) The City Commission would vote twice on any proposed code changes, at two separate meetings, each with a public hearing.

04) CONDITIONAL USE APPROVAL FOR THREE-STORY TOWNHOMES

Three-story townhomes require approval from the Planning and Zoning Board. They are allowed only if they meet certain conditions in the city’s code, as well as other conditions the Planning and Zoning Board can set. Conditional use approval would take place before the final site plan is approved, but both can be done at the same meeting.

to be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Board. Any waterrelated variances would also need to be reviewed by the Marine Advisory Board.

B) Another Development Review Committee meeting will take place to review the final site plan before it goes to the Planning and Zoning Board, the Marine Advisory Board and the Community Appearance Board. C) The final site plan will be reviewed at separate meetings of the Marine Advisory Board and the Community Appearance Board, and then the Planning and Zoning Board, each with a public hearing. The Planning and Zoning Board is the body that gives final approval of the site plan, unless the decision is appealed to the City Commission by the developer. The Planning and Zoning Board could approve the final site plan and possible variances at the same meeting as the conditional use approval. Generally, the final site plan does not go before the City Commission unless the decision of the Planning and Zoning Board is appealed, but due to the magnitude of the project, the Commission will most likely want to review it.

06) APPLY FOR BUILDING PERMITS Rendering of the entrance to the proposed Lighthouse Point Yacht Club

A) The Planning and Zoning Board would consider conditional use approval for the proposed townhomes at one of its meetings, which would include a public hearing.

Tony Long Named Lighthouse Point Assistant Fire Chief After an extensive selection process that started last December, Tony Long has been appointed Lighthouse Point’s new assistant fire chief. Long brings with him 33 years of

experience working with the Pompano Beach Fire Department, where he started his career right out of the Broward Fire Academy. He worked his way up through the ranks, and served as a battalion chief the last 15 years he was there. Long is not a stranger to the Lighthouse Point Fire Department. Throughout the decades he worked for Pompano, he assisted Lighthouse Point with its fire and medical calls, as part of an agreement the two cities have to aid each other when needed. He had been waiting for an opportunity to join Lighthouse Point’s fire department, and “got lucky enough to be

picked” from a large pool of candidates. “I was very familiar with the city and the people, and it just looked like a wonderful place to work,” said Long. “Chief Long brings many positive contributions to our fire department,” said Lighthouse Point Fire Chief Shawn Gilmartin. “His local experience and working knowledge of the city and our department makes him an immediate asset, and provides a smooth transition into his leadership role and responsibilities.” The assistant fire chief position opened up last December when Gilmartin vacated it to succeed former Fire Chief David Donzella, who retired. Long was appointed to his new position this August. He retired from Pompano just over a year ago, after he had worked the maximum number of years allowable with the department. Long said the Lighthouse Point Fire Department has welcomed him “with open arms,” and “it’s like I’ve been here forever.” He’s impressed with the department’s “top of the line” fire and medical equipment, a lot of which is brand new and state-of-the art. The department’s attitude towards customer service also stands out. “The firefighters here are trying to do everything they possibly can for the citizens,” he said. “They go out of their way for customer service, and I find that very refreshing.” For example, firefighters recently helped a resident whose American flag got torn up in a storm. The flagpole >>> was so tall, they used a

Victoria Burgess Day in Lighthouse Point Former Lighthouse Point resident Victoria Burgess was honored by Mayor Glenn Troast for recently setting a world record by being the first female to cross from Cuba to Key West on a stand-up paddleboard. At the city commission meeting on Aug. 28, Troast proclaimed Aug. 28 as Victoria Burgess Day in Lighthouse Point. Burgess is a supporter of The Women’s Sports Foundation, which was established in 1974 to advance the lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity. She made the record-setting journey to raise awareness of women’s equality in sports. Burgess, 34, began paddling from Havana, Cuba on June 26, accompanied by support crew aboard a catamaran. She completed the journey in 27 hours and 48 minutes, paddling 115 miles. Burgess is a Pompano Beach fire inspector, who previously served as a firefighter and paramedic. “The City of Lighthouse Point wishes to recognize Victoria Burgess for her extraordinary efforts,” said Troast, before presenting Burgess with the framed proclamation.

City and Police Reach Deal on New Contract and Pension Plan Terms BY MARIE PULEO At its Aug. 28 meeting, the City Commission approved a new three-year collective-bargaining agreement with the union representing its police officers – the Broward County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) – ending months of tension caused by unresolved pension plan issues. Lighthouse Point police officers, as well as the city’s firefighters, were dissatisfied because they were paying 16.34 percent of their yearly wages to their pension plan, one of the highest rates in the state of Florida. In addition, earlier in the year, the actuary who manages the pension plan recommended the city increase their contribution rate to 21.26 percent. The new deal – which takes effect Oct. 1, 2018 and expires Sept. 30, 2021 – will give police officers the option to switch to the Florida Retirement System (FRS), a move the city’s first responders had been requesting for over two years. Under the FRS plan, the contribution rate for first responders will be three percent. The city will contribute 24.5 percent, compared to the 22.27 percent it was paying into the existing pension plan.

Aug. 20. In July, a proposed contract was rejected by an overwhelming majority of police officers because it did not address several of their concerns. After further negotiations, the city and police were able to resolve those issues, the most crucial of which involved a six-month cap on accruals of sick leave, annual leave, and compensatory time while on workers’ compensation. That period can now be extended, at the city’s discretion, for an additional six months in the case of a serious on-the-job injury, such as being shot in the line of duty. Both parties also agreed on an increase in a yearly stipend that is offered to police officers in lieu of take home vehicles. The current stipend, which is $3,000 a year, will rise to $3,600 for the first year of the contract, and to $3,900 for the following two years. Other provisions in the new contract include a cost of living increase of one percent in 2018 and 2019, and two percent in 2020. In July, the city finalized a new contract with its firefighters after more than a year of negotiations.

From a financial point of view, I think this is a good deal for the city, the taxpayers and the employees.” — Chris Merk Police officers who decide not to migrate to the FRS plan will have the option of remaining in the city’s current defined benefit pension plan, or converting to the city’s existing defined contribution plan, which is like a 401(k) plan, with a city contribution rate of 14 percent and an employee contribution rate of six percent. “From a financial point of view, I think this is a good deal for the city, the taxpayers and the employees,” said Chris Merk, one of the police department’s union representatives. Once the process of moving to the FRS is complete, all new police officers will be enrolled in the FRS when they’re hired. Before the new police contract was approved by the City Commission, police voted 15 to 1 in favor of it on

The negotiation process for the three-year contract – which is retroactive to Oct. 1, 2017 and expires Sept. 30, 2020 – was prolonged due to the pension plan issues. In the end, the city presented firefighters a contract almost identical to the one it offered police officers in terms of joining the FRS and other pension plan options. The police officers were watching closely to see how things turned out for the firefighters. Four officers left the police department as a result of the pension plan problems, and a few others had job applications out elsewhere. “Reaching this agreement was the result of very hard work on the part of the Police Benevolent Association and the city,” said Merk. “It was a lengthy process. I’m glad we can put it behind us and move forward as a department, retaining and hiring quality officers.”

SOS Children’s Village

THE BEST KEPT SECRET FOR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE IS RIGHT HERE IN OUR BACKYARD!

BY JULIE RADLAUER-DOERFLER

THE MISSION OF SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE IS TO PROVIDE A FAMILY-ORIENTED community offering healing, hope, and home for children, young adults and families to become selfsufficient, contributing members of society. SOS Children’s Village in Florida is a foster care neighborhood in Coconut Creek. The tree-lined street has 12 houses, which are home to up to 75 boys and girls. The promise of “healing, hope and home for every child” assures the children growing up in the SOS Village are provided a safe and secure home. The SOS Village creates a nurturing and vibrant environment with an array of services to help children overcome their past traumas and build a successful future. Many of the children that come to SOS have been removed from their homes and families by the courts because of abandonment, abuse and neglect. The main priority of SOS is keeping sibling groups together. SOS Village allows for brothers and sisters, who are typically separated while in foster care, to reunite and maintain their family connection. SOS also provides an 18-plus Next Steps program to help young adults transition out of foster care after they turn 18. SOS Children’s Village Coconut Creek has been open since 1993. The children living in the village attend local state schools. After

school, they take care of household chores, play outdoors with their friends and study. They also take part in a variety of activities such as scouts, gymnastics, karate, football and band. Children ages 13 years and older attend on-site “independent living skills” classes where they learn about career and educational choices, job applications, interviewing and tools for household management. Many of the children receive on-site mental health therapy to help resolve issues related to their traumatic pasts. Young people who no longer live in the SOS Village and now live independently in the community also continue to receive support. Managing the lives of 75 children is no small task and the village relies on the support of volunteers and the community. >>>

>>> There are many volunteer opportunities including: MENTORING: Mentoring is a process where an elder passes on experiences, lessons and information to their mentee. This relationship is special and important because it teaches the mentee how to build trust and gives them a role model to look up to. STUDY BUDDY: SOS study buddies are caring volunteers who offer an hour after school to help the boys and girls with their homework. Sometimes all it takes is a kind and patient person to encourage the children to stay on task and complete their assignments. Each child receives tutoring twice a week through SOS, and the volunteer study budies help fill the time gaps. MAKE A BIRTHDAY WISH COME TRUE: Help a child living at the Village have a special birthday celebration. This can include helping to purchase the party supplies as well as helping to throw the party to make the birthday child feel special. TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT: When you have 75 children to get to extracurricular activities there is a lot of driving. You can help assure that all of the children have transportation to after school activities, family visits, etc. If you are interested in being a transportation assistant, you will need to take an online van driver safety training course. The transportation needs range from after school, to nights, to weekends. INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS: Each of the children living at SOS receive formal and informal independent living skills training. In addition to following a curriculum, SOS tries to supplement each child’s education with real-life experience from volunteers. If you are a banker that could teach teens about budgeting, or a tailor who wants to teach a sewing class, SOS can find the right opportunity for you. TO THE POINT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Bring the Joy

BY CRAIG HALEY

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM A SMALL FISH MARKET IN SEATTLE

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” - Vivian Greene

THERE IS A LEGENDARY FISH MARKET IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, CALLED THE PIKE PLACE FISH MARKET. YES, THE FISH IS WORLD CLASS, HOWEVER, the service, positive culture and playfulness of the staff has made this fish market the ultimate example of how to improve the environment in your business, classroom and home. The staff realized that they are not in the fish business — they are in the people business, serving fish. Big difference! It’s not uncommon to see employees throwing fish across the shop yelling, “Going to Montana!” You will even see customers throwing the fish, taking pictures holding large fish and everyone having a great time. I understand that not everyone here is a business owner or manager; however, this philosophy applies to parents, teachers, siblings and more.

THERE ARE FOUR ELEMENTS TO THE FISH PHILOSOPHY: 1. PLAY The employees at the Pike Place Fish Company make it a point to have fun at work. Yes, they do their job. They serve customers, ring up sales and collect money. But they also do far more than that. They make people smile, crack jokes and have fun! What can you do at work or home to be more playful and fun? 60

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

| lhpmag.com

2. MAKE THEIR DAY The make-their-day philosophy is all about bringing a little more joy to others and trying to be the highlight of their day. It can be as simple as a sincere compliment, giving them an unexpected surprise, or helping someone out in a time of need. It could also be giving someone a shout-out on social media, sending a card or positive text message. It could be anything that makes them smile. What can you do to make someone’s day today? 3. BE THERE Today, everyone is distracted with their phones, the internet, social media and more. The “be there” philosophy is hitting pause and engaging with a live person to give them your full attention. Be there means to really listen to someone, understand what they are saying and do something with it. Mary Kay Ask has a famous quote that says, “Everyone wears a sign on their head that reads “make me feel important.” When you are in the moment with another person, you are making that person feel great. 4. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE Attitude is a choice. You can choose to be happy and positive or you can choose to be a miserable, negative nelly. Yes, I know bad things happen sometimes, but it’s not what happens... it’s what you do with what happens that makes the difference. You can choose to focus on what’s wrong in your life or you can choose to honor the struggle and bring joy to every person, every interaction and every situation you can. This is not an article about business. It’s an article about engagement, building relationships and strengthening the bonds you have with the people in your life. So go out there and bring the joy!Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

TO THE POINT GET PSYCHED

Nitty Gritty BY DR. JILL SELBACH

SO WE AS PARENTS, EDUCATORS AND EMPLOYERS HAVE BEEN VERY HUNG UP ON INTELLIGENCE FOR A LONG TIME. WHEN CHILDREN ARE IN KINDERGARTEN the parents start to chatter about whose child has been tested to see if they are “gifted” and are moving into the “gifted class.” But we have all known many factors are necessary for success other than intelligence. Teachers are focused on the students with the best grades and employers on who came from the best colleges. In all of these stages we are focusing on intelligence as one of the best predictors of success. We really did not have other ways to measure or constructs to consider. In 2012 researchers began studying and measuring personal attributes other than cognitive or intellectual capacity. Researcher Angela Duckworth of the University of Pennsylvania has been looking at these noncognitive factors that aid in achieving long-term goals. One of these attributes she has become most noted for is grit. Duckworth defines grit as “passion and perseverance for long-term goals.” It is not intensity you feel in a fleeting moment, talent or luck. Longitudinal research by Duckworth and others has found that goal directed effort, healthy social relationships, sound judgment and decision making strongly predict physical, psychological, social, economic and yes, academic success. Goal-directed effort encompasses grit, self-control

and a growth mind-set. Healthy social relationships include the capacity for gratitude, emotional intelligence and social belonging. People with sound judgment and decision making tend to be curious about concepts and the world around them. They also tend to be openminded. Duckworth believes that grit is something you can gain. It is not an attribute with which you have to be born; it can be developed. She says that parents who are warm and loving but very demanding of their children and very emotionally supportive of their children tend to foster grit in their kids. These parents show respect to their children and let them make their own decisions when they are developmentally ready. Her book “Grit” focuses on this passion and perseverance that she finds is present in high achieving people. Prior to becoming a professor of psychology she taught math in middle and high school. She became very interested in what made students successful. She saw that intelligence alone did not predict success. She saw many smart kids that weren’t high achievers and others who were high achieving but not earning the highest test scores. In one of her studies she found that smarter Ivy League students actually had less grit than lower scoring peers. The students who were not as bright compensated by having more determination and working harder. The students with the most grit had better grade point averages than the smarter students. The good news is that neuroscience and longitudinal studies suggest that people change quite a bit over time; not just in early childhood. These changes are gradual and can be influenced by environment and exposure. Grit appears to be just as, or more important than, intelligence for long-term goal achievement and we can develop this characteristic. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. TO THE POINT TIDBITS AND TRIVIA

Weird Sports WHAT SPORT, PLAYED ON ICE, REQUIRES 40-POUND STONES WITH COFFEE-POT HANDLES AND BROOM-WIELDING TEAM “JANITORS” WHO SWEEP THE PLAYING FIELD? YOU GUESSED it — CURLING. The sport began in Scotland in the 16th century. It was played on frozen lakes because the Scots did not have maple trees with which to build shuffleboards. Once beer and shuffleboard wax were invented, the game mostly moved indoors to taverns. This explains why most old bars were long and narrow. Some other weird sports include:

POOHSTICKS: All you need is a bridge over water and some sticks. Contestants drop sticks from the bridge on the upstream side. The one whose stick first appears downstream is the winner. The contests are restricted to members of Mensa. It is deemed too difficult for those with lesser IQs. WIFE CARRYING: This competition, held annually in Finland, requires men to carry their wives over a 253-meter course. The winner receives a mobile phone and his wife’s weight in beer. This makes sense. After consuming several pounds of beer he will need the phone to call for a ride home.

WORLD GURNING CONTEST: A simple sport — the one who makes the ugliest face wins. It originated in the United Kingdom in 1297 at the Egremont Crab Fair, an obvious choice. What’s uglier than a crab? I could win this handily if they held the competition on the day I get my income tax bill. HOBBYHORSE RIDING: I swear I’m not making this up. In Finland and Sweden thousands of contestants perform hobbyhorse dressage. They “ride” faux horse-heads-on-a-stick performing “passage,” the “piaffe” and extended trot. Little did I know that as a child I was a forerunner of this sport. (Actually my hobbyhorse was a broom. We couldn’t afford the horse head.) A secondary market for hobbyhorses has emerged on Instagram. The mounts sell for up to $170 depending on provenance and type. I think an investigation is warranted, as the steeds are advertised as “fast” or “good at jumping.” Come on, it’s a plush toy on a stick. EXTREME IRONING: A dangerous sport/performance art. Those who play this take their ironing boards to odd locations, such as hanging from cliffs, water skiing, atop moving vehicles, etc., and iron clothes. The official website bills it as “a danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a wellpressed shirt.” CHESS BOXING: In this hybrid sport participants (combatants?) alternate between two-minute rounds of boxing and four-minute rounds of chess. The winner is decided by a checkmate or a knockout, whichever comes first. I can hear the announcer now: “Smith fires a left hook to the rook, but Jones counters with a straight right and Smith’s bishop goes down.” These sports go well together — chess, a cerebral sport, and boxing, which offers cerebral concussions. SOCCER: Okay, maybe it doesn’t quite fit the category, but it has some strange aspects. Here is how it was explained to me: When the referee points a yellow card at a player it means he/ she has jaundice. A red card means the player is in the country illegally and must leave the field. Finally, if the game ends in a tie, there is a “shootout.” This does not involve bloodshed — unless you are a fan in the stands. Y

Reasons to Smile

Af AS A DENTIST, I KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT SMILES. AFTER Accredited Member of ALL, IN MY PRACTICE, I SEE DOZENS OF THEM EVERY DAY. Beyond flashing bicuspids and incisors, a smile does more than show off good dental hygiene. Flexing the 26 tiny facial muscles that make up a smile can bring on surprising health benefits. So come with me on an extraordinary journey into the seven secret wonders of the smile.

2122 NE 2nd Street • Pompano www.jbdentistry.com

FEEL BETTER, INSTANTLY Okay, say you’re having a bad day. You just spilled that no-foam soy latte on your new silk blouse. Or your boss just dumped a mountain of paperwork on your desk. If you turn that frown upside down, a surprising thing happens: the physical act of smiling actually brings on a change of mood. Sure, smiling when you’re down seems like the last thing you want to do, but medical science has proven a positive change in mood occurs when your lips curve at the corners. So next time you’re feeling blue, put on a smile. You’ll be glad you did. BRING DOWN YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE If you’re like most Americans, your blood pressure could use a little lowering. And one good way is to smile and laugh. Breaking into a hearty laugh — which starts with a smile — can bring down blood pressure. How, you ask? The answer is simple. Laughing causes your heart rate to increase, immediately followed by a short period of muscle relaxation. This one-two punch decreases your overall heart rate and blood pressure, which is a proven way to better cardio and mental health. So crack both a joke, and a smile. Your heart will thank you. APPEAR MORE ATTRACTIVE Have you ever noticed how a smile lights up a face? When you smile, you tell the world you’re happy, pleasant and fun to be with. On the other hand, people who frown send the opposite signal – stay away! Studies have proven that those who frequently smile are perceived to be more likable, and have better relationships than those who don’t. And having better relationships is a cornerstone to better health. From happier marriages to relating better to others, a smile can open a world of happiness and wellbeing. So smile, and the world will smile with you. 66

RELEASE STRESS The clock is ticking, and that report is due by end of day. Or, you have to give a speech in front of a roomful of strangers. Stressful situations like these bring on increased adrenaline and a fluttering heart rate. Fortunately, the simple act of smiling can help reduce stress by lowering your pulse and blood pressure, as chronicled in a 2012 study. Scientists discovered that the physical act of flexing the many tiny muscles that contribute to a smile actually countered the effects of stress on the heart and blood pressure. So next time you have to give a toast, or go on a blind date, flash the high beams! A good smile goes a long way to calming the nerves. STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM They say laughter is the best medicine. Well, add smiling to your medicine cabinet — because together, smiling and laughing help enhance your immune system. According to a report from the Mayo Clinic, smiles and laughter release “signaling molecules” in your brain that help combat stress and disease. Imagine, the simple act of grinning can help fight off colds and other illnesses. And, of course, the opposite is true. Negative thoughts and angry impulses actually lower your body’s ability to fight disease. >>>

GRIN AND BEAR IT When something hurts, you want pain relief — fast! The first place you might turn is a bottle of aspirin or other analgesics. But there’s an alternative that’s both natural, and easy. You guessed it… your smile. Combined with laughter, your smile can help dull pain and bring immediate relief. The Mayo Clinic has reported that smiling and laughing releases your body’s own natural painkillers, which have no side effects, and no expiration date. Another recent study found that interactions that produce a smile and a laugh actually raise your tolerance for pain. A good laugh with a friend can make that toothache hurt a lot less. (Oh, and coming to me with a toothache would also be a smart way to reduce pain!) LIVE LONGER Everyone wants to live longer and look younger. But if you think the fountain of youth is just a fairy tale, you might want to think again. A 2010 study shows that people who smile frequently and have positive emotions live happier, longer lives. Added benefits are more stable marriages, and a wider circle of friends. The mere act of smiling brings about a physical and chemical reaction that, as mentioned above, helps reduce stress, alleviate pain, and ward off disease. All of which contribute to a longer and healthier lifespan. So go ahead. Crack that smile. And make the most of every day. YOUR PATH TO A PERFECT SMILE Sure, it’s easy to smile when you have confidence in your teeth. But if you suffer from tooth decay, gum disease or other dental problems, sometimes it’s hard to flash the pearly whites. That’s why it’s so important to visit your dentist regularly. For basic dental hygiene, we recommend a visit twice a year. During that visit, we give your teeth a thorough cleaning, and scan for problems that may be brewing. If we do spot something, it’s so much easier, and effective, to address the problem early. Nobody wants a toothache — much less a root canal! So make a point of visiting your dentist regularly, and have the confidence to show off that big, beautiful smile. You’ll gain a myriad of health benefits with every smile. TO THE POINT LEGAL MATTERS

Save Thousands

HOW TO AVOID PROBATE AND GUARDIANSHIP

BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

WE DON’T LIKE TO THINK ABOUT DYING. MY DAD USED TO SAY: “MAY YOU LIVE AS LONG AS YOU WANT AND NEVER WANT AS LONG AS YOU LIVE.” But we all have to go sometime. When you die, do you want to leave your heirs with substantial legal fees and court costs and tie them up for nine months to a year in probate court? Wouldn’t it be comforting to know that your heirs will inherit your assets quickly and with little expense? Probate is a formal court proceeding to distribute assets when a person dies. Probate can occur with or without a last will and testament. Probate is necessary in Florida when a person dies

owning any type of property (real estate, stocks, bank accounts, etc.) in his or her name alone without any named beneficiaries. Probate in Florida takes about a year. Florida law entitles an attorney to charge three percent of the gross value of the assets that are being probated. A lawyer can also charge an hourly rate; however, it is preferable to agree to a specific percentage, which may be negotiated below the three percent. Otherwise, there is an unlimited ceiling for an hourly rate. The personal representative (executor) is entitled to a similar fee.

To avoid probate, I always suggest to clients that every bank account, brokerage account, annuity, life insurance, etc. have one or more beneficiaries as “payable on death” (often abbreviated p.o.d.). This is also called “in trust for” (i.t.f.) or “transfer on death” (t.o.d.). However, there are some banks which will allow the “payable on death” for savings accounts and CD’s but not for checking accounts. If that is the case with your bank, it will be very important that you have at least one other person as a joint owner of that checking account. Ideally, this should be a family member whom you trust. Regarding real estate, there are several ways to avoid probate. The two most common ways are a life estate deed or a revocable living trust. You should discuss these options with a lawyer. I have written previous articles about both options. It is also very important to have the proper legal documents to protect you if you are incapacitated: durable power of attorney, designation of health care surrogate and written declaration, also known as living will. This group of documents is sometimes referred to as advance care directives, since you are preparing for the possibility that you may become incapacitated in the future and wish to avoid a guardianship. The health care surrogate is often used when you may be temporarily unable to communicate; once you can communicate, you will be able to make your own medical decisions. Once you have beneficiaries on all your accounts, real estate owned in a way to avoid probate, and advanced care directives if you become incapacitated, you will have given yourself and your heirs an invaluable gift: peace of mind. TO THE POINT TRY THE WINE

Wine Ratings

WHAT’S DO THEY ALL MEAN?

BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

PERHAPS YOU BOUGHT A COUPLE BOTTLES OF ITALIAN CHIANTI AND TOSCANA ROSSO WINE, AS I SUGGESTED IN AN EARLIER COLUMN AND WHICH I’LL talk about here later. Or maybe you shopped recently for another wine. If so, you may have noticed little tags displayed near some wines with combinations of numbers and letters or names: 88 WA (Wine Advocate), 89 WS (Wine Spectator), 91 WE (Wine Enthusiast), 96 James Suckling, etc. These are wine ratings, of course, and they’re often shown with a brief tasting note: Juicy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and other stuff. Bursting

with berry fruit and exotic hints of smoke, leather and tar. Drink now or sometime before you die! I admit...that’s pretty sarcastic. Professional tasting notes tend to be direct but sincere, although not always

positive. Retailers display favorable wine ratings to encourage us to buy wines “experts” thought were pretty good. These ratings can be helpful, even persuasive, especially when there are many choices, we’re in a hurry, or we get reassuring clues we’re buying wine we or someone else will like. However, they also can be confusing and sound a bit silly. Not sure you’ll like wine that smells like burnt wood, a leather strap and freshly laid asphalt? But seriously, why not just buy wines with 90+ ratings — an A or A-minus for most people? That could be a good strategy if you’ve liked all or most of the wines you’ve purchased that way. However, what about all the similar wines without those tags — a few of which you may have bought and enjoyed in the past? There’s a good chance, if you do a little research, many or most of them also have been rated, perhaps more favorably than the wines with tags. Even if the rating is lower than 90, a rating of 85 from many reviewers is still quite good. Just as important, the wine you’re tempted to purchase may have been rated higher or lower by other wine critics. That’s often the case. Because it’s hard to ignore those tags, we can help ourselves get better wine value for our money and try different wines by learning more about wine rating. Most of the ratings displayed by retailers are from ten or so publications, websites, or other firms that employ people to taste and review wines. In addition to the names above, you may see Decanter, Vinous, Allen Meadows (who writes about Burgundy and Pinot Noir wines), Eric Asimov (New York Times), Lettie Teague (Wall Street Journal), Jancis Johnson (a British wine critic), and Wine and Spirits. Most use a variant on the 100-point scale developed originally by Robert Parker, the founder of Wine Advocate. But there are other scales, like four or five stars. With the 100-point scale, wines rated 95 and higher should be classic or great wines. They’re usually expensive, often a lot more than $50 a bottle. Wines

TO THE POINT TRY THE WINE <<< rated 90-94 should be excellent or outstanding; 85-89 should be very good; 80-84 should be good; 75-79 is mediocre; wines below 75 — forget about it. Eric Asimov, The New York Times wine writer, uses a four-star scale, where only wines that he and his tasting panelists think are good or better get rated. Vivino, a consumer wine website and app, uses individual consumer ratings to calculate average scores for each wine using a five-star scale. All wine ratings are inherently subjective. Even professional, highly disciplined wine tasters who sample hundreds, or even thousands, of wines every year have preferences or biases. Some ratings are done using blind tastings, where the tasters don’t know the labels until after the tasting. Other tastings are not blind. Also, wines typically are compared to similar wines of the same vintage. A 90 Wine Advocate rating for a 2014 Pinot Noir shouldn’t be compared to same rating for a 2014 Zinfandel. Without naming names, some ratings seem consistently inflated — perhaps to encourage retailers to post their reviews instead of others. So, while a 90+ rating from any reputable reviewer or publication might be sufficient to sway us, I recommend developing a level of trust with different reviewers. You can investigate and subscribe to Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, or other websites. However, if you go to a large wine retailer, they’re likely to have online access to multiple ratings. Let’s say you see a wine you’re interested in that advertises a 92 rating by Suckling, ask one of the salesmen if they can look up the Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, or other ratings. For French Burgundy, Allen Meadows is highly respected. After a while, you’ll probably get a sense of whose ratings may match your own tastes, especially if you tend to drink some wines more than others — California Zinfandel versus Italian Chianti, for example. Overall, I’ve come to trust Wine Spectator ratings, but I know others who prefer Wine Advocate and other reviewers. If you like consumer ratings, the Vivino smart phone app is free. It gives you the ability to take pictures of each wine, rate and comment on it, see others’ reviews and keep a history of your tastings, among other features. It’s definitely fun and useful. CHIANTI Speaking of Chianti, I suggested trying two types of wines from Tuscany in Italy: Chianti and Toscano Rosso (sometimes referred to as Super Tuscans). Chianti is made 95 percent from Sangiovese grapes, while Toscano Rosso are blends of Sangiovese and other grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The idea was to sample the variety and differences in tastes in wines made with Sangiovese. I suggested buying Chianti Classico or Riserva wines, although there are many fine Chiantis from other areas

NEXT MONTH The column next month will discuss the German Riesling wines I suggested drinking last month and also wines to drink with your Thanksgiving supper. Additionally, I’ll start discussing Portuguese red and white dry table wines. You may know Portugal as the home of Port, delicious sweet, fortified wine that’s a category unto itself. But Portugal also produces some of the world’s best values in quality dry wines. Let us know what you think by emailing editor@pointpubs.com Y

in Tuscany. The Classicos come from a renowned area near Florence. The Riservas Chiantis are aged longer before release. Chiantis are medium weight wines that typically have red or dark berry flavors, a modicum of acidity and other qualities that make them perfect for tomato-based dishes and meats. I drank a 2015 Chianti Classico from Frattoria Rodáno ($15-18) that was deep red, pleasant and easy drinking with delicious cherry and blackberry flavors. It was delicious with spinach lasagna. I also drank a very memorable 2013 Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva ($18-25) that was deep red and powerful. It was complex with layers of cherry, oak smokiness, earthiness and other flavors that kept developing as we drank it. I chose two Toscana Rossos. One was 2015 Santa Cristina Toscana ($10-15), a very fine, budget-conscious wine found in many wine stores and restaurants. It’s a pleasing, easy drinking blend of Merlot, Cabernet, Sangiovese and Syrah. It reminds me of the tasty unnamed house wines served in neighborhood restaurants in Italy. It has berry fruit, tobacco and floral aromas and flavors, and is slightly tart. It’s rounder and less robust than Chianti. The second wine was a 2013 Clemente VII Settimo Rosso di Toscana ($19-$25), a deep red-purple blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah. This, too, was easy drinking, with cherry and blackberry flavors, along with tobacco and oak. It was more concentrated and tannic than the Santa Cristina due to the amount of Sangiovese and Syrah. It had more flavors and was more complex than the Chiantis in this tasting. (In case you’re curious, all these Tuscan wines had very good Wine Spectator ratings.) Good Toscana Rosso wines show the lip-smacking variety that can be achieved by blending Sangiovese with other grapes. Indeed, some of the region’s top wines, often called Super Tuscans, are made this way. There’s variety in pure or predominately Sangiovese wines, too. There are distinctive wines made from special varieties of Sangiovese grapes grown around the Tuscan towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino. Brunello de Montalcino is one of these, a big, powerful, amazing wine. They’re made with the area’s best grapes and reward aging. The most recent 2012 and 2013 vintages are both outstanding but would likely not be at their best if drunk now.

When Lighthouse Point voters go to the polls on Nov. 6, they will decide if they want the City to issue General Obligation (G.O.) bonds for a maximum principal amount of $16.5 million. They will also vote on three proposed amendments to the city’s charter, including one that would increase the terms of office for mayor and commissioners and impose term limits beginning with the 2020 election. BOND REFERENDUM

If the bond issue is approved, proceeds from the sale of the bonds will be used for the construction of a new fire station, a new recreation building at Dan Witt Park, upgrades to the city’s Public Works facilities and renovation of the second story of the library. On May 22, the City Commission voted to place the bond referendum on the November ballot after several months of discussing at meetings and workshops the need for these long-term city capital improvement projects.

All the projects will be bundled together under one question on the ballot. Voters will be asked if they are “For Bonds” or “Against Bonds.” If a majority of voters approve the item, the bonds would most likely be issued within six months, according to the City’s Finance Department. The City currently plans to pay off the principal amount, plus interest, over a 30-year period. Based on the City’s best estimate of future interest rates and future assessed property values, property owners would pay approximately $4045 per $100,000 of their taxable value to finance the bond issue, starting with their November 2019 property tax bill. The only bond the City has ever issued was in 2002, in the amount of $6.2 million, to pay for a new police complex, improvements to the fire station, roads, bridges and drainage, and an expansion of the library. That bond will be paid off in August 2022. If voters approve the proposed bond issue, there would be two years of overlap when property owners would pay for both the old bond (most likely less than $17 per $100,000 of taxable value) and the new bond.

CITY CHARTER AMENDMENTS

Voters will be asked to consider three local ballot questions regarding proposed amendments to the city’s charter. AMENDMENT 1 would increase terms of office for mayor and commissioners to four years and establish term limits of 12 consecutive years of service as either mayor or commissioner, excluding partial terms, beginning with officials elected in or after March 2020. It would also extend the current terms for commissioners elected in 2018 until 2020 to provide for elections in even numbered years. AMENDMENT 2 proposes removing the Planning and Zoning Board from the city charter and placing it in the city’s code of ordinances, so changes pertaining to the board’s members, meetings and duties can be made by the City Commission through adoption of ordinances, rather than charter amendments requiring approval by voter referendum. AMENDMENT 3 would change the date the mayor and commissioners take office, and the date the Commission convenes, from seven days after the election to the first regular City Commission meeting following the election. In addition, the meeting at which the City Commission is required to canvass the election results would take place on a date established by ordinance, rather than be restricted to within five days after the election. Each of the proposed amendments will be considered individually, and any amendment that is approved by a majority of voters will take effect upon certification of the election results. Actual ballot questions can be seen on the city’s website: city.lighthousepoint.com.

PROJECTS THAT WOULD BE FUNDED BY THE BOND ISSUE FIRE STATION AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER

After extensive discussions at meetings and workshops, the City Commission found that the current fire station, which is almost 45 years old, needs to be replaced with one that has an emergency operations center (EOC) and can withstand a Category 5 hurricane, which would allow first responders and essential city staff to remain in the city during major storms. The plan is for the City to build a two-story fire station with an EOC on property located at 2101 NE 36th St. (the corner of Sample Road and NE 21st Way, just east of the post office), creating a signature entranceway to Lighthouse Point. The city just purchased the land at a price of $1.75 million. It is currently occupied by a building that was once a Marathon gas station, but has stood vacant for years. The new fire station would be a “drive-thru” facility, with two ways for fire rescue vehicles to go in and out, and direct access to a major thoroughfare, which eliminates having to drive through local streets to get out of the station. An additional 15 parking spaces would be provided for City Hall at the site of the old fire station, which would be torn down once the new station is completed. The estimated cost to construct the new fire station is about $9.5 million.

PUBLIC WORKS BUILDINGS

If the bond issue is approved by residents, major improvements would be made to the city’s two Public Works buildings, located at the north end of Dan Witt Park. The building that is currently used for fleet maintenance would be demolished. Originally a recreation arts and crafts building, it is in disrepair and floods when there are

heavy rains, resulting in inadequate work conditions. A new building would be constructed on the same site, with drive-in bays of varying depths, office space, electrical and mechanical rooms, and storage areas for tools and small equipment. A portion of the other existing Public Works building — containing office space, a break room and restroom — would be renovated to bring it up to current standards. The estimated cost of the new construction and renovations is about $870,000. Drainage of the area will also be improved to address the flooding issue.

RECREATION BUILDING AT DAN WITT PARK

A new recreation building at Dan Witt Park would provide indoor space for additional programming, as well as a place where at least 150 children participating in city programs and others at the park could seek protection during inclement weather (especially lightning storms), or emergency situations. A one-story building is being proposed, which would include indoor restrooms, a covered patio with a concession stand, and multipurpose space that could be rented out to the public for special events, with the concession serving as the catering kitchen. It would also include a game room and space for the Parks and Recreation administrative offices, which are currently housed in City Hall. The building is set up to serve as an auxiliary emergency operations center (EOC) for Public Works and other emergency personnel involved in recovery efforts after events such as hurricanes. The estimated cost of the building is $1.7 million.

LIBRARY

Renovations are proposed for the second floor of the city’s library, which was never completed and is currently a storage area with a dumbwaiter to help move books. The space would be converted to a community room to allow for expanded programming and special events. A new elevator, stairway and restrooms would be added to comply with building code and ADA requirements. Two tutoring rooms and offices on the ground floor would be repositioned to make room for the stairway and elevator. The estimated cost of the project is about $600,000.

ACQUISITION OF REAL PROPERTY

The bond issue could finance the acquisition of real property used by the City for the proposed bond projects or to enhance its ability to provide public services. The $1.75 million the city paid to purchase the property that will be used for the new fire station would be refunded back to the City with the bond proceeds.

PRESENTATIONS TO THE PUBLIC

This month, city staff, the mayor, city commissioners and a group of volunteer residents will be making presentations at places such as Dixon Ahl Hall, service clubs and condo associations to help educate residents about the November bond referendum. Details will be posted on the city’s website, city.lighthousepoint.com.

Home to the world’s largest collection of authentic Broadway musical costumes, Costume World attracts renowned designers to Pompano Beach. When I visited the new warehouse space in July, there was an air of chaos as workers unloaded moving vans, unpacked boxes and moved furniture, frantic to get everything in working order. Maneuvering around boxes, I followed Wick to the back warehouse where my jaw dropped wide open. The rows were seemingly endless, each stacked from floor-to-ceiling with multiple levels of hanging costumes. Some were bedazzled, colorful and sequined; others drab with earth tones, aged and antique. There were polka-dot 50s dresses, flappers, mobsters, showgirls, cowboys, geishas, civil war soldiers, round-table knights, paupers, hobos and everything in between. It was as if every character I have ever seen on stage or in film discarded their clothing in one gigantic, organized closet. I imagine that for costume designers, the experience of stepping into the Costume World warehouse is akin to that of a candy-loving child stepping into Charlie’s Chocolate Factory — awe, wonder and an instantaneous desire to play. I imagined what it would be like if “Night at the Museum” were to happen in that warehouse, the costumes suddenly springing to life. Oh the stories they would tell! In a certain regard, Wick said some of the costumes do have a voice — through the ghosts they brought with them. Wick and her daughter Kimberly swear the warehouse is home to several friendly ghosts, most likely of the actors and actresses who wore the costumes. Both Wick and Kimberly shared tales of paranormal phenomenon in the warehouse — taps on windows, multiple lights inexplicably turning on, strange cold breezes and distinct whispers in their ears. “Spirits are definitely here. There’s no doubt about it,” ” said Kimberly. “One thousand percent — they are here, but they are happy.” After swapping ghost stories, Wick shared the surprising tale of how Costume World grew from a craft project to an estimated $30 million collection.

IT STARTED WITH A SANTA SUIT

As a single mom of two young daughters, divorced at the young age of 22, Wick was required to be creative and resourceful. At Christmas, when the girls, Kelly and Kim, wanted to make some money to purchase a present for their indefatigable mom, Wick devised a plan to bake some holiday cookies the girls could sell at the Royal Palm Plaza. Wick’s English housekeeper at the time shared

fond memories of her own childhood, shopping in the holiday markets in England where people would sell their goods wearing Santa suits. While Wick liked the idea of costuming her girls to sell the cookies, she didn’t know where she could rent any Santa suits. “I opened up the yellow pages and there were no costume shops,” Wick recalled. “My housekeeper suggested we make them, so we went out and bought all the materials. She got me a sewing machine and we made the suits. It started with five Santa suits at my dining room table — just a little home project for my girls.” After creating them, Wick and her girls got the idea to rent the suits for $25 a piece. The Boca News came to take a picture and Wick published a one-line advertisement in the yellow pages. It was just the right time. “The phone rang off the wall,” Wick said. “People were calling up and saying ‘I need Big Bird. I need this. I need that.’” The Wick girls realized they had stumbled upon a great idea. “The more we got involved and did research, the more we loved it,” Wick said. “So we decided we would

go out to FAU and ask the costume department to come to lunch and I could host a little tea party for her. She came to the house. We told her what we wanted to do and she said, ‘Oh, that will never work!’” Wick set out to prove her wrong. “I said to the kids, we will go to New York and I’ll invest about $1,000 in you and we’ll have a little store, and for Halloween you girls can help me run it. We never knew we would be mobbed,” Wick remembered. “There was nothing around like that.” The first year Wick rented a small garage storefront, coincidentally, right across the street from where her current warehouse stands. Now Wick can look across the street and remember Costume World’s humble beginnings. Things were rough in the beginning. “I’d say ‘Kim, go sell a bunny nose so we can have lunch,’” Wick joked. “‘We’re not proud of it,” Kimberly added, “but everybody starts somewhere.” In the shop’s second year, The Wick girls moved to a larger space on Copans Road. Then Wick started buying up costume houses around the country. “From the 80s to the 90s I bought out ten large

costume houses,” said Wick, who would renovate the stores and re-brand them as Costume World shops. “We had a store in Buffalo, New York and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We had a store in Houston, and in Dallas, then Austin. We had a store in Boston. These were big costume facilities.” In the 80s, not feeling educated enough in the field, Wick took it upon herself to get mentored in the art of costume and set design from a Cuban designer in Miami who owned a costume house and crafted specialty work. “I went every day to Miami for a whole year,” Wick remembered. “Every day at 2 o’clock I’d drive down there. She trained me on everything — how to buy the fabric, what to do — hands-on training.” Together, Wick and her mentor created the entire wardrobe and set for “The King and I” from scratch.

In 2005, Wick bought out the largest costume house in New York City, which was founded is 1868. She moved 15 semi-loads of original Broadway costumes to Pompano Beach, making her, as mentioned in OCTOBER 2018 | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

the New York Times, the ‘largest authentic musical wardrobe collector in the country.’” Wick had only ten frantic days to pack up the costumes in New York and bring them home to Pompano Beach, where she stashed them in the warehouse. “A whole team of us packed it up and moved it. I’ve never been so dirty in my life. We had to scrub ourselves for days,” Wick said laughing. While Wick was thrilled she had won the New York bidding war, in the frenzy she didn’t quite comprehend what she had purchased. As she and Kimberly began unpacking the boxes, they were astonished by the Broadway gems they had acquired — Richard Burton’s armor with his name in it from “Camelot,” Rob Hudson’s jacket, Jimmy Garland’s hat, all the original “42nd Street” clothes, costumes from “Once Upon a Mattress” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” The collection was good enough to start a museum. So that’s exactly what Wick did. She transformed part of the warehouse space into a tourable museum with a dining area designed as an exact replica of Central Park’s iconic restaurant, Tavern on the Green. Guests would pay to see the costumes, have tea on the Green and perhaps see a live musical performance. In 2011, when the City of Pompano Beach told Wick she was no longer allowed to host visitors in the warehouse district due to zoning regulations, she knew she needed a new venue. At 69 years old, when most are dreaming of retirement and lazy afternoon naps escaping the Florida heat, Wick dreamed of costumes and theater. Her daughter Kelly, who in adulthood had established a career in real estate, suggested Wick explore the defunct Caldwell Theater in Boca Raton, which had gone bankrupt and was facing foreclosure. While Wick had no formal background in musical theater, she embraced the challenge. In 2013, Costume World leased the Caldwell, finally buying it in April 2016 for $5.2 million. The Caldwell, now called the Wick Theatre, houses Wick’s costume museum and theatre company. The museum collection has been featured on “The Today Show,” in People magazine and was the subject of a photo essay in Vogue magazine by fashion photographer, Bruce Weber. The theatre company, now is in its sixth year of production, has become an important cultural institution in Boca Raton. “To think,” she said, “It all started with a Santa suit.”

t. Augustine: the oldest city in the United States. Traveling through this marvelously historic city is a journey through time and history — going back to the earliest beginnings of the discovery of America and the very first footsteps of Europeans on the continent. While Christopher Columbus is widely accredited for discovering America, it is believed in fact, to be Ponce de Leon, who was the first to officially discover Florida in 1493 and claim it for Spain. St. Augustine itself was founded in 1565 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, making it the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the contiguous United States.

Early Beginnings

As one takes their first footsteps into downtown St. Augustine, the European heritage, history and influence can be seen and felt everywhere. The old brick roads, narrow alleyways and passages, quaint houses, churches, chapels and other historic landmarks greet you upon first sight. The city is a time-capsule of the nation’s oldest colonial influences, and the city has

preserved that capsule well. Much of the city’s earliest architecture and infrastructure have remained intact, and impressively so, in a cohesive manner. St. Augustine works hard to maintain its history and cultural heritage. The city achieves this by having in place strict regulations when it comes to exerting any changes to existing buildings, landmarks or other objects of historic value. In tandem with the historic architectural review board (HARB), the goal is to ensure preservation of historic property in the city

90

as well as maintain the visual facade of property to reflect that history. This also applies to hotels, inns, restaurants, shops and businesses that occupy space in the city. This ongoing mission of the municipality has earned it its praise for maintaining Florida’s oldtown charm and rich cultural heritage. You will be hard pressed to find any major corporations tainting the city. Chain organizations are a relatively rare sight here. Rather, you will mostly find individual shopkeepers, restauranteurs, innkeepers, family businesses – St. Augustine is a town where the proverbial mom and pop store, the individual business owners still thrive. Their success is a silent, yet solid statement to the big corporations. It’s a boon to the small business owner and delivers a surf of fresh air from the world’s accustomed globalized corporations. Not the big chain hotels flourish here, but rather the more intimate inn or the bed and breakfast is the lodging of choice for many travelers here.

Age & Beauty

A visit to the oldest city of America merits a visit to the city’s oldest inn. Built in 1791, the St. Francis Inn has

been a lodging accommodation since 1845. Located on the picturesque St. George street, the Inn seeks to deliver an experience of old city charm elevated by modern comforts that meet the expectations of today’s discerning traveler. Owned and operated by Joe and Margaret Finnegan, who took the Inn over

in 1985, it abides by the same regulations as private domiciles for presevering its history, something that the Finnegans: “Hold very, very dearly.” The St. Francis Inn is listed in several of the nation’s most discerning registries of highend inns and bed and breakfasts. It is also the only lodging to be listed by National Geographic Travel as “the place to stay” in St. Augustine. While my stay at the Inn was unquestionably reflective of the accolades it has earned, it was the little things, the gestures and extras, which remained with me most profoundly. A warm greeting at the door, a piece of homemade dessert after a long day trekking through town or the perfect restaurant recommendation. It was this engaging, personalized care from the Finnegans that made the experience outstanding. And while welcoming guests may be one of the simplest aspects of great hospitality, true human warmth is not something that can be faked. This friendly human touch recurs consistently in St. Augustine. The majority of inns, restaurants and shops are owned and operated by proud locals. The famed St. George’s pedestrian area is dotted with small restaurants, coffee bars, little shops and art galleries. Similarly to the inns, many of the restaurants are situated in historic buildings that have been around for hundreds of years — a true throwback to days gone past. Exploration is exciting. Diversity of establishments, refreshing. Hours can be spent easily on just one small street. And there are very few intrusions to this identity of local entrepreneurship. Whatever establishment it is you choose to enter, chances are high you will be greeted by the owners, happy to strike up a conversation and tell you stories about St. Augustine. And it is exactly that which shines through the most while adventuring in St. Augustine — the local people and their pride for the city. The bar is set high. And it shows.

Four Ways Ahead

From St. George Street, the “Plaza de La Constitution,” St. Augustine’s main square, is but a stone’s throw away. The square is home to multiple monuments and statues that pay homage to the square’s rich and diverse history. Its strategic location ensures that any direction you choose to wander will lead you to an area worth exploration. Directly east, the bridge of Lions looms — offering beautiful views of the bay and Matanzas River. Along the waterway, there is a restaurant and local staple, O.C Whites. Located in one of the oldest buildings in the city, it is a local hotspot for seafood and craft beer. Further exploration along the seawall will eventually bring you upon another famed dining establishment, the Raintree, which is an impressively restored colonial Victorian estate dating back to 1879. The Raintree is another delightfully historic building to experience the feel of the city in, while enjoying fine dining, both in- and outdoors. Look West and you will see towering what used to

be the legendary Ponce de Leon hotel. An architectural wonder of its time, it was legendary Henry Flagler’s first hotel and today is the home of Flagler College. Directly across the street is the equally revolutionary Alcazar hotel, also built by Henry Flagler. Today, the Alcazar is home to the Lighter museum, which houses an impressive collection of 19th century antiques and art, as well as Café Alcazar, a restaurant located inside the old indoor-pool of the former historic hotel. Head South and you can venture the city’s oldest street, Aviles street. With some of the oldest remaining colonial houses, it takes you even further back in time. Here too, restaurants, art galleries and cafés line the narrow brick road and time-gone facade. Stay the course and you will find yourself in the historic district. For the most part residential, it is street after street of colonial Spanish and Victorian properties. This is also where you will find legendary Lincolnville — one of the first areas in the South where free black folk were able to settle after the American Civil War. In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited

Lincolnville during the height of the civil rights movement. St. Augustine’s Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. is one of only two in the nation that Dr. King Jr. actually visited in person. North of the plaza, you will find the Castillo de San Marcos, a fort built by the Spanish to repel invaders — particularly British aggressors during the AngloSpanish war. The base of the fort’s walls are built from crushed seashells called “coquina,” which had the remarkable ability to withstand and absorb canon shots. Attacks on the fort were quite futile and the impressive structure still stands today. Just across the street from the fort, the colonial quarter can be found. An outdoor museum depicts OCTOBER 2018 | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

how the earliest colonials lived their lives here. With canon and musket fire demonstrations, authentic blacksmithing and old colonial houses as they were in the 1500’s, the quarter paints a detailed picture of how life was in the earliest days of Spanish Florida. Volunteering in the quarter as a tour guide is historian and Stanford PhD graduate Chad Light. It is not every day you get a museum tour from a forensic anthropologist about human colonial history. Mr. Light is another testament to the pride and commitment of the people in this unique city. While St. Augustine is gorgeous to explore on foot, a hop-on, hop-off trolley service operates here seven days a week. Old Town Trolley provides the means to see the entire city, and its more hidden parts, comfortably. The trolley operators function as both drivers, and knowledgeable tour guides.

Beyond City Walls

Despite the incredible number of things to experience at the core of the city, St. Augustine stretches out far beyond its downtown and historic areas. The Matanzas river and bay give visitors the opportunity to see St. Augustine from the water. The river and the bay are teeming with wildlife. Many indigenous bird species and rare forms of crustaceans are found here. The specific type of seashells used for the coquina to build the Castillo de San Marcos can only be found a few places around the world, but are abundant here. Numerous pods of dolphin patrol the river. There is a lot of marine wildlife research that takes place here due to the area’s unique ecosystem. Eco tours of St. Augustine is an organization that provides non-intrusive educational tours of the river and bay of St. Augustine. Their goal is to provide wildlife tours of the surrounding coast while ensuring conservation and protection of the natural habitat.

Going out on a boat with Captain Zach McKenna, who has an academic background in marine studies, is a treat. Through an easy-to-follow narrative, McKenna gives a comprehensive insight of the local wildlife, discusses the marine research he is involved with and recounts historical moments on the waters surrounding St. Augustine. The boat ride is thrilling and fast at times, yet smooth. And Captain Zach ensures it all happens with wind in your hair and a smile on your face. On the other side of the Matanzas River lies the final frontier of land to the east before the Atlantic Ocean — Anastasia Island. Home to Anastasia State Park, the lighthouse, maritime museum and famous zoological alligator park, there is much that warrants a visit to the island. Particularly the zoological farm where visitors can experience exotic wildlife, not just from Florida, but from all over the world including Komodo dragons, giant tortoises, hundreds of alligators and crocodiles, exotic birds, venomous snakes and amphibians. Even the prehistoric skull fossil of the Sarchosuchus, one of the largest crocodilian species to have ever lived, weighing up to 20,000 pounds, can be seen here. Guests can also watch live as a zookeeper feeds hundreds of eager alligators in the swamp. On the island too, you can experience some fantastic dining opportunities. “Amici’s,” ran for 35 years by Sicilian siblings, Vito and Benedetta, is a true authentic representation of rustic Italian and Sicilian cuisine. The grilled swordfish and Pasta Alla Norma are stand-out dishes.

End of the Line

Continue the journey east and St. Augustine beach will be your destination. An open and vast beach stretches the island’s coast. The beautifully white and soft sand entices — a perfect chance for some much-earned relaxation. This is the end of the line. In front of you only the ocean and horizon loom. Behind you St. Augustine and everything you have seen. It makes for a very fitting final setting for the conclusion of your journey, and a chance to contemplate and reflect on your trip. Untouched and unspoiled by the bustling outside world, St. Augustine remains true to itself. The experience feels authentic, and the sensations of discovery and exploration, real. Its history will leave you feeling enriched. The welcoming care and openness of the St. Augustinians ensure you are tapped more deeply into your journey. And as you overlook the ocean on Anastasia Island’s beach, the trip will leave you wondering, why aren’t more places just right like this? Y

Meet the Chefs BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

Chef Troy Beasley

POMPANO BEACH HOUSE

The opening of the Pompano Beach House was quite possibly the most anticipated restaurant opening the city has seen in decades. Located in the planned Fisherman’s Village, the Beach House is one major part of the city’s plan to revitalize the beach. The restaurant opened in March and cost roughly $6.5 million to build. The company behind the Beach House is the Brimstone Restaurant Group (BRG), best known for their former pursuits, Grille 401 on Las Olas Blvd. and Pinon Grill in Boca Raton. BRG acquired a 45 year lease from the City of Pompano Beach to build the Beach House, which is a modern, two-story building on the sand. On the first floor, the main dining room offers a nearpanoramic view of the beach. On the second floor is a chic and trendy cocktail bar with giant, circular, tiered booths overlooking the ocean. The entire restaurant is modern, yet earthy and slightly rustic — reclaimed beach wood panels line some of the walls, old boat ropes dangle copper light fixtures with Edison bulbs, fishing nets and wooden boat oars are spotted throughout the design and an artistic grass wall hangs near the entrance. The decor gives honor to the restaurant’s seaside location. At the helm of the Beach House kitchen is Executive Chef Troy Beasley who has worked for BRG for seven years. Before joining BRG, Chef Beasley worked for Darden Restaurants at Seasons 52, and for Houston’s Restaurants for 16

years. As a Houston’s trainer for eleven of those 16, Beasley helped open Houston’s locations in DC, California, Arizona, Kansas, New York City, Texas and Florida. At each new restaurant, in each new city, Beasley said he soaked up fresh styles of cooking and learned better techniques for managing his kitchens. Traveling, he said, has made him more adaptable and creative. “I’m like a chameleon,” he said. Chef Beasley’s versatility aided him in co-creating the Beach House menu with BRG’s Director of Culinary, Rick Schwager. The menu is one part Caribbean, one part Southern, one part steakhouse and a few parts seafood. Beasley’s New Orleans and Southern roots seem to be weaved into the menu at times, with elements like Creole sauce, white cheddar grits, buttermilk chicken, andouille sausage and dirty rice. Caribbean flavors are spotted with ingredients like pineapple, grilled mango and crispy plantains. The ocean is well-represented with sushi, raw oysters and fresh fish; while land is honored with juicy steaks. >>>

Some of Chef Beasley’s favorite entrées are the “Drunken Rib Eye” (a ribeye steak with Hawaiian marinade topped with pineapple salsa and served with Parmesan potatoes), the “Walk the Cedar Plank Salmon” (cooked on a cedar plank and topped with whole-grain mustard butter), the bacon-wrapped scallops (served with dirty rice and a tequila lime cream sauce) and the “Beachy Shrimp and Grits” (jumbo white shrimp served with stone-ground white cheddar grits served in a light, Creole sauce with ham, asparagus and corn salsa). The most Creole-inspired of the dishes — the shrimp and grits — is surprisingly not Chef Beasley’s creation, but Schwager’s recipe. Still, it is one of Beasley’s favorites. “It’s a great recipe. It’s really tasty and has a lot of flavor profiles,” he said. “Flavor is what I’m all about. I’m not that chef that stays on one plate for ten minutes to make it really pretty and fancy. I concentrate on the taste. I just want food to taste really, really good.” Beasley said this desire — to bring a depth of flavor to every dish — comes from his soulful grandmother. As a child, EVENTS AT growing up in New Orleans, Beasley POMPANO BEACH helped his grandmother cook. HOUSE: She earned her living running The Pompano Beach House a prepared meal business from regularly hosts yoga classes, her home, cooking up huge pots rooftop parties and other fun of food to provide meals for local events. A full schedule can be churches, schools, barber shops, found on the Beach House neighborhoods and beauty facebook page. salons. Beasley remembers his childhood with her well.

“I used to stand on little milk crates because I wasn’t tall enough and would watch her cook,” Beasley said. “She baked. She did a lot of pot cooking. She fried. What was really unique for my grandmother was she didn’t really measure anything. I used to see her put her hands in and take seasonings and flours and just throw stuff in.” Beasley’s experience with his grandmother pushed him to pursue work in kitchens young. He started as a bus boy at 14 years old and in just a few years worked his way up to a line supervisor position at Copelan’s Restaurant on St. Charles St. While Beasley received no formal culinary education (he earned degrees in computers and business administration), he worked in restaurants throughout his schooling and, luckily for Pompano Beach, never left the kitchen. Beasley has high hopes for the Beach House’s future. “We started out here with a bang,” he said. “I hope we continue that trend.” The Pompano Beach House is located at 270 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. For more information visit beachhousepompano.com or call 954-607-6530.

Chef “Pasquale”

TRATTORIA NOVELLO Tucked in the center of the east Atlantic Blvd. plaza between the Foundry and Café Maxx, Trattoria Novello is poised to be a central part of Pompano Beach’s seaside re-birth. At the heart of Trattoria Novello is Chef Patrick Solarino — or Chef “Pasquale” as he goes by (a name derived from his grandfather). Chef Pasquale’s fervent belief in using fresh ingredients (so fresh some are grown in his own home garden) and authentic Italian imported products is truly what sets Trattoria Novello apart from the roughly two dozen other Italian restaurants in Pompano Beach. Chef Pasquale grew up in Montreal, Canada in an Italian family whose connection, heart and soul was built in the kitchen. “My grandmother and my grandfather were always in the kitchen doing something,” Chef Pasquale said. “My grandfather was always the farmer — he would get tomatoes and fresh cow’s milk. We’d go foraging for wild mushrooms. And always at home, my grandmother was making fresh pastas, cookies and food. “My grandparents were poor, but always used fresh ingredients, hand-picked from the garden. The backyard had no grass — it was all garden and trees. We used to have hundreds of rows of tomato plants and celery and carrots — you name it, and we had it in the garden.” Chef Pasquale has carried this spirit with him. He imports products like olive oil, pistachio cream, cheeses, pastas and even water from Italy. He makes his own gnocchi, ravioli, bucatini and occasionally spaghetti, and butchers his own meats. His limoncello tiramisu, panna cotta and pistachio cannoli are homemade. Some of Trattoria Novello’s dishes are derived from Chef Pasquale’s own childhood. While his family is from Southern Italy and much of the Trattoria Novello menu reflects that heritage, Chef Pasquale has intentionally crafted a menu with dishes from all regions of Italy. “A lot of restaurants in the area focus on their main region where they are from, and I don’t like that. There’s

more to work with,” he said. “I want to say this respectfully — I’m not an American Italian restaurant — you won’t find garlic rolls or fettuccine Alfredo here. It’s mostly traditional dishes — really traditional Italian dishes, sourced from Italy.” Some of the dishes, he said, Italians are not even familiar with. “A lot of the food I do is not known in Italy. It’s considered peasant food. Whatever you had that day, you put together and you make,” he said. The emphasis is on quality, freshness and oftentimes simplicity. Chef Pasquale said his top-selling dish is his branzino, which is simply grilled with the skin on. “People go crazy for it,” he said. “I also have items on my menu that Americans are not familiar with. Once they try them here in my restaurant, I open up their mind.” These ingredients include tripe and some wild TOP zuppa di cozze in game meats, such as rabbit and wild boar. vino bianco — mussells in Beyond the food, Chef Pasquale and his white wine sauce ABOVE orecchiette Pugliesi wife, Kim Kahn, (who can be seen welcoming — broccoli rabe, Italian guests in the front of the house on the sausage, garlic, pepper flakes, olive oil, Romano weekends and does the restaurant’s social cheese, white wine media and photography) have attempted to LEFT limoncello tiramisu — a create an atmosphere every bit as welcoming lemon twist on the classic. The Talerico Family CASA CALABRIA Calabria is a majestic, old-world city at the extreme southern tip of Italy — at the toe of the boot into the Mediterranean. Calabria is internationally known for its salumeria’s and fine aged deli meats, such as soppressata, hard sausage and prosciutto, as well as many fresh and hard cheeses. Calabrian cooking strikes a harmonious balance between meat-based dishes, fish, herbs and rustic vegetables, such as eggplant. The Talerico brothers and sisters behind Casa Calabria — an oceanside Italian restaurant located in the Ocean Manor Resort in Fort Lauderdale — were all born in Calabria. Their father “Papalo” was a land owner, shepherd and goat herder. His occupation was making fresh ricotta and mozzarella LIVE MUSIC AT cheese for most of the village. family jarred their own tomato sauce, made fresh pasta and harvested vegetables from “Papalo’s” gardens. Every Sunday, the home’s dining tables were lined with Mamma’s fresh baked bread and pastries. Food was synonymous with family. The Talerico’s rich heritage is showcased in both Casa Calabria’s atmosphere and menu. The dining room pays homage to the family’s rustic home — exposed bricks, candle chandeliers and a wood-paneled ceiling lead to windows that frame a beautiful view of the ocean. A red piano sits on the edge of the dining room where live music is played. Old photos of the Talerico parents and Calabrian villages adorn the walls. And the menu is primarily derived from Talerico family recipes. Casa Calabria imports many of their ingredients directly from Calabria. Starting with the anipasto plate with speck, pecorino and Gorgonzola, served with a wedge of cantaloupe, grapes and caramelized onion, is a great way to transport one’s palate to Southern Italy. Sipping an earthy red wine while dipping crusty bread into extra virgin olive oil is equally soul satisfying. Lobster ravioli, linguine ai frutti di mare, the Branzio Del Mediterraneo or grilled octopus are great choices for sea lovers, while filet mignon and the veal chops cater to the more meat-oriented diner. Chef CAFÉ Oliver Saucy MAXX It has probably been said before, but celebrity Chef Oliver Saucy has the perfect name. His culinary creations are absolutely “saucy” — they’re creative, colorful, multicultural and have an emphasis on local seafood and produce. Whether it’s Atlantic hogfish snapper, fruits and citruses from the tropics, Creole spices from New Orleans, zesty Cuban herbs or chilies from Mexico, Chef Saucy draws inspiration from South Florida’s surrounding cultures. By letting ingredients drive the plate, Chef Saucy keeps things fresh for both his guests and himself. His creativity though, he said, can never be overshadowed by proper technique. “At the end of the day, if you can’t put it all together with the French and Mediterranean roots I grew up studying, it just doesn’t work,” said Saucy. “One culture, one plate. We don’t want to get too confusing or it takes your red wine drinker right off the table. That’s the bread and butter for us – the red wine drinker.” This blend of classic technique and innovative ideas is what Chef Saucy and Café Maxx is known for. It has made Café Maxx a Pompano Beach culinary destination for almost three decades. Saucy has been at the helm for almost as long. In 1988, Saucy co-purchased Café Maxx with the restaurant’s general manager Darrel Broek. The dynamic

duo has run the restaurant ever since. Broek’s hospitable charm welcomes guests in the front of the house, while Saucy’s creations make them salivate at the table. To keep the menu balanced, Chef Saucy breaks it down into thirds: one third is classic, so regulars know what to expect; another third is standard proteins prepared with seasonal ingredients; and the last is where Chef Saucy gets to be creative. “The other third is whatever exciting thing we can get our hands on — whatever we feel like doing,” said Saucy. “We try to get the best available ingredients all the time.” ABOVE LEFT Chef Oliver Saucy teaches a cooking class Café Maxx.

Perhaps it runs thick in his blood; He learned his first fundamental cooking techniques watching his father in action as the Executive Chef in a resort kitchen nestled in the back of a medieval German Castle in the Black Forest region of New York. “I grew up eating all kinds of crazy stuff. It would be like, ‘oh what did you have for dinner?’ ‘Oh, we had calves brains’,” said Saucy laughing. As a young adult, Saucy studied at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park where his father also taught for 28 years. Saucy’s son worked in the Café Maxx kitchen for two years and has also studied at CIA. Saucy has passed on his skills to non-relatives, too. For the 20th Anniversary of Café Maxx, 26 of Saucy’s protégés, who now run kitchens all over the country, came to congratulate him and thank him for his mentorship. For over 20 years Saucy has also been teaching cooking courses at Café Maxx during the summer months when the restaurant slows. “The biggest class we had was 99 people. Holy moly,” said Saucy. At the end of Saucy’s classes — which include topics like grilling meats, cooking lobster, or Mediterranean technique — Saucy serves a four to five course dinner, plus dessert with the recipes he taught. “The classes bring a lot of energy in here. It’s a lot of fun,” said Saucy. “It’s relationship building.” So what’s next for Chef Saucy and Café Maxx? “You know I think it’s just to keep the focus on making quality food,” said Saucy. “That never goes out of style.” Café Maxx is located at 2601 E. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel — it’s divine a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto them-

selves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. HappySNAPS Memorable moments around town

CONGRATULATIONS TO ART MAKENIAN AND THE HILLSBORO LIGHTHOUSE PRESERVATION SOCIATY (HLPS)! On Sept. 8, HLPS and longime lighthouse keeper Art Makenian (right) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to reveal a new staircase recently installed at the lighthouse. The staircase is an exact replica of the Lighthouse’s original staircase seen in architectural drawings and

pictures dating back to 1907. Makenian proudly spearheaded the project, hoping to leave a lasting legacy on the historic lighthouse he loves so much. At 82-years-old, Makenian will sadly soon retire as the lighthouse keeper, a position he has served in for roughly two decades. Lighthouse Point magazine would like to personally thank Mr. Makenian for his tremendous passion and hard work!

Business Spotlight: Good Health Starts with Good Products

Carico International believes good health is not an accident — it’s determined by five important factors: the water you drink; getting deep, restful sleep; breathing the purest air; having a regular exercise plan and eating right. The company is committed to selling products that help people improve their lives in those five areas. Their local office in Ft. Lauderdale (at 2851 W. Cypress Creek Rd.) will help you find the right products for you, including cookware, water purifiers, air filters and sleep systems. Whether it’s an orthopedic, hypo-allergenic mattress that eliminates harmful EMF radiation from electronics (with Carico’s state of the art “EMF Silver Shield”); a juice extractor to help you improve you immune system and increase your nutrient intake; or a water filtration system that offers you protection from contaminates like algae, fungi, chlorine, pesticides and mercury — Carico International products aim to improve your overall health. You can read more about the company and its products in our online extras section at pointpubs.com/extra
