Bailey Contemporary Arts Presents “Grey Matter”

Reception for “beautifully broken,” an ArtHeart Exhibition Exploring Mental Health Through Contemporary Works

Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) will present “beautifully broken,” an exhibition curated by Katya Nepture of ArtHeart that explores mental health’s impact on our society. Live performances — by spoken word artists Stacy the Kid and Becky Talbot, and performance artists Ashleigh Bremser and Wild Beast Collective/ Jenny Larson — will supplement the art. “One in five American adults have experienced a mental health issue,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “Yet, this common illness often remains hidden behind a wall of secrecy and isolation. The goal with ‘beautifully broken’ is to create a safe environment to raise awareness and advocate against social stigma. Atlantic One Project Will Take Place of Current McNab House Land & Surrounding Parcels PROJECT MAKING HEADWAY IN SPITE OF SOME PUBLIC OPPOSITION The mixed-used development project projected to take the place of the McNab house and its surrounding parcels is making headway in spite of public concerns. The project, called Atlantic One, is currently slated to be built on a 4.97-acre collection of parcels located south of East Atlantic Blvd. and north of SE Third St., between SE 17th and SE 19th Avenues. The project continues to wind its way through the City’s approval process. A number of residents who attended a community meeting at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center on June 10 expressed concerns about the project. These included density, increased traffic and insufficient parking. The meeting, which became heated at times, was organized by the developer and presented by the zoning attorney and the architect of the project. Atlantic One proposes 304 residential units and about 10,600 square feet of ground floor retail space fronting Atlantic Blvd.. The project lies within the East Transit

townhomes. As per the requirements of the ETOC, the townhomes would be on the edges of the project that are close to single family homes, duplexes or other townhomes. The plan calls for 374 parking spaces. Residents were told that the new zoning allows for a reduced parking requirement to

discourage people from using cars and to encourage multi-modal transportation. Acknowledging that traffic “frequently, is the biggest concern,” the zoning attorney said the traffic study carried out as part of the

The McNab house on Atlantic Blvd.

City’s review process showed that, during the morning peak hour approximately 90 new vehicular trips would be created by the project, and during the afternoon peak hour approximately 110 trips would be created, which equates to about two additional vehicles per minute in the morning, and about three additional vehicles per minute in the afternoon. Based on its review of the results of the traffic study, the City is requiring the developer to provide a left-turn lane for northbound SE 18th Ave. as it approaches East Atlantic Blvd.. The goal is for the residential units to be market rate rental apartments or condos, or a mixture of both, and about 65 percent will be one-bedroom units. A woman in the audience said that rentals will drastically reduce the property values of the homes in the vicinity of the project.

Another attendee said he was “all for the project,” and thinks that property values will actually go up, “but the parking, with all due respect, is going to be a problem.” “I’m hoping that the developer will hear every true concern that we have,” said another resident. “That’s the purpose of the meeting,” said the zoning attorney. The Atlantic One project has gone before the city’s Development Review Committee for site plan and building design approvals, which the developer needs in order to obtain a building permit. On June 4, the Architectural Appearance Committee voted unanimously in favor of the project, but the Chair did suggest that some type of traffic calming feature be installed at the intersection of SE Second St. and SE 18th Ave., “because there is a lot of traffic that’s going to be created, there’s no doubt.” The project is scheduled to go before the Planning and Zoning Board on June 26. A groundbreaking would not take place for about another two years, and currently the plan is to build the entire project in one phase. The property for the Atlantic One project was purchased by the developer from the McNab family last December. It will be one of the larger Pompano Beach re-development projects taking place over the next few years. This past March, in an effort to save the historic McNab House, the Pompano Beach CRA announced the intention to move it down the street to the current site of McNab Park. Plans call for it to be turned into a restaurant. Two small bed and breakfast hotels may also be built on the park grounds. How much of the existing park’s facilities will remain has still not been determined. Y

New 327-Unit Apartment Building Breaks Ground on Federal Highway in Pompano Beach Fairfield Pompano, LP, an affiliate of a San Diego-based developer, recently filed notice with Broward County that it has started construction on a six-story, 327-unit apartment complex, plus approximately 10,000 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage, located at 601 N. Federal Highway, just south of the Pompano Beach Community Park and the Pompano Air Park. The property used to house a commercial

center, which was demolished. Fairfield reportedly obtained a $56.5 million construction loan from Santander Bank. According to property records, the developer acquired the 3-acre site for $7.7 million on June 15, 2018. The estimated opening, according to the developer, is in 2020. Pompano Beach Seeks a Master Developer to Create Plans for a Dense Urban Downtown

On June 11 the City of Pompano Beach and Pompano Beach CRA issued a Request for Letters of Interest (RLI) for a Master Developer for the City’s Downtown and Innovation District. Pompano Beach has undergone a tremendous transformation during the past few years, and the creation of a dense urban downtown is the City’s next redevelopment goal. The purpose of the RLI is to identify qualified master real estate developers to acquire and develop real property assets owned by the City and the CRA in Downtown Pompano Beach. Those selected to proceed to a proposal stage will provide their best and final proposal for the master development of the parcels in downtown Pompano Beach. “We are seeking developers who understand our goals for the area, offer experience in prior projects of this scope and have the financial capability to undertake this project,” said Nguyen Tran, CRA Director. “Over the past 20 years, the Northwest CRA has assembled over 30 acres of land within the almost 70-acre Innovation District. Most

24

developable parcels are generally located along the busy I-95 corridor and Atlantic Boulevard, making this one of the last prime development opportunities of its kind in South Florida.” Based on a previous market analysis, the master plan should include a mix of desirable uses for office space (750,000 sq. ft.), retail shops (165,000 sq. ft.), residential (1,500 units), hotel/ hospitality (up to 420 rooms in multiple buildings), a new City Hall/ Government Offices, restaurants (35,000 sq. ft.) and education. In addition, as part of the marketing and branding strategy for downtown, the CRA envisions a creative and unique drainage system, possibly using linear waterway systems that create a visible and desirable asset for development parcels, much like the waterways in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and San Antonio, Texas. A stormwater conceptual master license has already received county approval and a drainage district will need to be formed. Design and

Renderings of development projects in Pompano Beach

construction of a creative and aesthetically pleasing drainage option can occur simultaneously with the vertical development. The City has also invested heavily in cultural assets in the downtown area. The Pompano Beach Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts and Historic Ali Cultural Arts are spread out over three distinct geographic areas in the downtown area providing opportunities for pedestrian movement between them. Highlighting these facilities and using them as anchors in the master plan will provide a ready-made set of assets to build upon for future redevelopment. Letters of Interest must be submitted electronically through the City’s eBid System on or before July 10, 2019. Developers must be registered on the City’s eBid System in order to view the solicitation documents and respond to this solicitation. The complete solicitation document can be downloaded for free from the eBid System as a pdf at: https://pompanobeachfl.ionwave.net/ CurrentSourcingEvents.aspx. Y

Major Redevelopment Project Along Intracoastal Resumes Construction in Pompano Beach Construction of a new upscale dining and retail complex at the southeast corner of the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge is back on track after coming to a standstill almost 10 months ago. “We are moving forward,” said Don Olsen, Director of Operations for Tsatas Acquisitions, the company that owns the property and is managing the project. “We’re doing the vertical pieces now. In a few months, you’ll see the buildings will be all the way up.” According to Olsen, construction of the project had come to a halt in order to correct a design issue that affected the civil engineering. He said the City and the engineers were able to resolve the issue about four months ago, and the project is now fully permitted. The buildings are expected to be up by October. The interior buildouts should be completed sometime between December 2019 and February 2020. The project had its groundbreaking in November 2017 under the name of Harbor Promenade, but Olsen said a new name is in the process of being chosen. The complex consists of two restaurants and a retail building. The larger of the two restaurants will be located at 101 S. Riverside Drive, along the Intracoastal Waterway. It will have 150 indoor seats, as well as 350 outdoor seats. The menu will feature American cuisine, including steaks, salads, seafood, chicken and pork, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free items. “We want to be the place where people can come from everywhere and get a great meal for a great price,” said Olsen. The second restaurant will be on the

26

waterfront parcel just south of the larger restaurant. It will have about 75 indoor seats and 100 outdoor seats, over two stories. The cuisine will be either high-end Italian or Mediterranean seafood. Olsen said the smaller restaurant will most likely open at least eight months after the larger one. For guests who arrive at the two restaurants by boat, there is 300 feet of dock space. “There will be no expense spared at this location,” said Olsen. As an example, Olsen noted the investment that was made in the retractable awning system for the patio deck space to ensure that it’s a comfortable place to sit outside in any kind of weather situation. The larger restaurant was originally going to be called Harbor NYC, but different name options are currently being explored. It could be called Madisons New York Grill & Bar, which is the name of an existing eatery that Tsatas Acquisitions opened in Boca Raton in 2013. “We may call it that; we may call it something else,” said Olsen. “We’re really not sure at the moment.” A name is also being sought for the smaller restaurant. The retail component of the project will be a retail building located on Atlantic Boulevard between South Riverside Drive and Hibiscus Avenue. There is enough space for four bays, but two of the bays will likely be combined for one business. The types

of retail that will occupy the building haven’t been decided on yet, but Tsatas is in the process of contracting a commercial real estate agent to lease out the spaces. “We may even keep one of the bays for ourselves and do another concept in there,” said Olsen. “So, we’re floating all ideas.” The retail building will be done first because it’s a simple structure with aluminum framing and a mostly glass exterior all the way around. The larger restaurant will be the next building to be completed. Within the next month or two, signage that includes new renderings of the buildings will be put up on the fence line around the entire property, which is 2.2 acres. Olsen said that Tsatas Acquisitions is looking to make a heavy investment in Pompano Beach because “we believe that Pompano is going to be the next great city to go to in South Florida.” “Our expectations are high, and we have a feeling that the City and the community are going to love our concepts and they’re going to love having a new place to be able to choose from,” he said. In Case You Missed It

Old Photos Tell the Story of Pompano Beach’s Rich History BY JEFF LEVINE

I WAS GOING THROUGH OUR ARCHIVES THE OTHER DAY AND FOUND A BUNCH of pictures of Pompano Beach from throughout the 20th century. In researching the history of the pictures and locations, I learned a lot I thought you might like to know. You can check out more of these historical photos online at pointpubs.com.

overlaps with portions of the Plaza at Oceanside, Ocean Monarch and Sea Monarch condos, the Fire Station, the library and Wells Fargo buildings and possibly go as far north to what is now the Parliament House and/ or the Bermuda House condos.

Mystery Sign: Welcome to Pompano Beach

Kester Cottages

The high rise condos didn't really start to take over A1A until the late 1960s. Prior to that, the road was lined with small, tacky motels that we would now call "boutique hotels" and lots of empty land. If you were traveling north on A1A, just past Atlantic Blvd. you would have found dozens of small cottages. Called the Kester Cottages, they were built primarily in the 1930s by local resident and prominent business leader William Kester. According to the Pompano Beach Historical Society website, they "were mostly 25-by-35-foot single story dwellings on the beachside, one, two and three bedroom models. They were all painted white and each featured shutters with cutouts from the four suits in a deck of playing cards. Houses cost $950 and were rented out for $29 a month." There were between 100 and 150 cottages built. Most were on the barrier island, but some were built in the Old Pompano area, as well as in Deerfield Beach. Only a few remain today. The home of the historical society is in a Kester Cottage, and there are a few on NE First Street that are still inhabited by real people. The cottages along the beach are long gone. Today, as best as I can tell, the Kester Cottage area today

This Welcome to Pompano Beach sign would seem likely to have been situated on Federal Highway. We're guesstimating it was up in the 1950s or possibly the ’40s. The sign is guiding people to the Hillsboro Inlet fishing boats, so it would have likely been positioned for cars heading north on US1. Since the 14th Street Causeway bridge wasn't built until 1967, it is likely that the "2nd light right" was referring to Atlantic Blvd. So, the sign was probably in south Pompano Beach, maybe somewhere on McNab Road. Do you know the story of the sign? If you do, please tell us more. E-mail me at: jeff@pointpubs.com.

And, if you ever want to see Pompano Beach History up close, we recommend a trip to the Pompano Beach Historical Society and Kester Museums. The Society's home base is one of the original Kester Cottages. They offer tours on select Saturdays and by appointment. It Dawned on Me

The Robots Are Here AND THERE’S NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT

BY DAWNE RICHARDS MY CURRENT OBSESSION: “PRODUCTS THAT SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE!” I know. I’m about 70 years behind the times, but whatever. I may be a Luddite, having fought long and hard against getting a TV remote: “If I can’t even get up to change the channels, I’ll be even less fit!” Don’t be unduly concerned. I (finally) gave in, decades ago. Now, I’ve decided to revisit the newer “timesaving products!” — the ones invented since my 25th birthday. I greeted the first Roomba with my usual (get off my lawn)

suspicion. Me: “It’s wildly overpriced and unnecessary. If I can’t even get up to vacuum, I’ll be even less fit!” But now — oh, now. The siren song of lower pricing, coupled with my new flooring, seduced me; I succumbed. The Roomba arrived in a festive box. I opened it with the requisite pomp and circumstance, as befit its promise to be lifechanging. (In fairness, I’m not sure who promised that, but my Roomba-convert friends have certainly done so.) Supposedly (either the packaging said this or I’m making this

38

up), the Roomba would eventually “learn” its way around all(!) of the obstacles in its path. My first floor has so many obstacles that the Roomba is currently studying for its Ph.D. Note: I feel compelled to tell you that I’m planning to name the Roomba, as soon as it develops a bit more of a personality … which brings me to the utterly charming anthropomorphic qualities of this thing. It’s just…cute! It has little antennae, the better to feel danger (like stairs) with. So yeah, it’s cute. But what makes it utterly charming is its remarkable stupidity. While it knows enough not to fall down the stairs (which makes it smarter than many toddlers), it doesn’t seem to know that there’s a hard mathematical limit (20?) on how many times a doormat should be vacuumed. Currently, I’ll win any “How clean are your doormats?” contest. That determined little beast just goes at it, over and over, until I take pity upon it (he/she/they?) and gently redirect it. Warning: Turn it off before doing this, because it really doesn’t like being picked up and dangled midair while it’s grimly, cutely determined to clean that doormat again. It doesn’t quite whine like a puppy when you try this, but it comes close. It’s also very … spinny. It will spin, and spin, and spin in circles before realizing, “Oh! I think I’ve been here before – a LOT! Let me explore some other areas.” Thus far, the Roomba has the learning capacity of a recalcitrant adolescent, albeit without the sulking. But here’s the best part of this Roomba, aside from its significant entertainment value: I’ve realized that, pre-Roomba, my floors were filthy. To test this, I ran it a few times right after vacuuming and/or sweeping; it captured a breathtaking amount of dirt/pet hair/dust. So do your thing, Roomba. And I’ll redirect you as needed; I don’t think you’ll take over anytime soon. The doormats, however, should be concerned. Y

p U t i p o o h W y l u J f o h t r u o F e h t e t a Celebr

Full disclosure: There is no bigger fan of the backyard hamburger and hot dog barbecue than I am — especially if there’s cheese involved. However, from time to time, I like to take my barbecues in different directions and serve something unexpected. Independence Day is the perfect holiday to elevate your celebration with these out of the red, white and blue offerings. You can make the whole shebang ; pick one or two dishes to add to your usual repertoire; or just bring a side dish to a pot luck. Whatever you do, don’t skip the biscuits (words to live by). Roasted Garlic and Chive Biscuits

Makes 12-15 biscuits (depending on how big you cut them) I N G R E D I E N TS

2 4 5 2 ½ 1 2 ½ 1 4 1 ½ ½ 1

heads garlic, cut in half horizontally tablespoons chives, minced cups all-purpose flour tablespoons baking powder tablespoon sugar teaspoons kosher salt teaspoon baking soda sticks (2 cups) unsalted butter, frozen and coarsely grated cups whole milk cup sour cream egg, beaten flaky sea salt to taste

DIRECTIONS

Pimento Cheese makes about 2-3 cups I N G R E D I E N TS

8

ounces extra-sharp cheddar, grated (do not use pre-grated cheese) 2 ounces cream cheese, softened and separated into pieces ½ cup roasted red peppers, chopped small 3 tablespoons good mayonnaise ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste (taste it before adding salt as cheddar cheese is pretty salty.) DIRECTIONS

In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients and stir until smooth. Transfer to a serving dish, cover tightly and store in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before serving so it is easy to spread. Serve with crackers or raw veggies as a dip.

42

Preheat oven to 400°F. Wrap the garlic in foil and roast in the oven until cloves are soft, about 1 hour. Remove from the oven. Once the garlic is cool enough to handle, squeeze the garlic from the skins into a bowl and mash it up into a paste. Add the chives and set aside. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk the sour cream and milk together. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda. Add the grated butter and toss using your hands to coat butter well. Add the milk mixture and the garlic and chives and knead the dough with your hands until it comes together. It will be clumpy. Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a dough. Form into a rectangle and dust with flour. Roll out into a 9-by-12-inch rectangle and fold into thirds like a letter. Rotate the dough 90 degrees, dust with more flour and repeat this process two more times. (This is called laminating will create those flaky layers.) Roll dough into a 9-by-12-inch rectangle and trim the outer ¼ inch. (This will help the dough rise.) Cut into equal squares and transfer to one of the prepared sheet pans. Cover in plastic and refrigerate 30 minutes. Remove the biscuits from the refrigerator and move half of them to the other sheet pan, leaving two inches between each biscuit. Beat one egg and add a touch of water or milk. Brush the biscuits with the egg wash and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Place the two sheet pans of biscuits in the oven and rotate the trays halfway through. Bake until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Serve warm.

Warm Roasted Potato and Asparagus Salad Serves 4-6

I N G R E D I E N TS

1 ½ pounds baby potatoes, cut into bite sized pieces 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, minced (optional) ½ bunch asparagus, blanched and sliced into ¼ inch pieces olive oil kosher salt

FOR THE DRESSING

2 2 1 ½

tablespoons grainy mustard tablespoons fresh lemon juice teaspoon salt teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ½ teaspoon sugar ½ cup olive oil 1 clove garlic minced

Peachy Pork Tenderloin Serves 5-7

I N G R E D I E N TS

2 ¾ ¼ 1 1 3-4 3-4

pork tenderloins cup peach jam cup soy sauce garlic clove, grated tablespoon rice wine vinegar peaches, halved and pits removed pinch of cayenne pepper (or more) scallions, sliced diagonally kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

In a small bowl combine the peach jam, soy sauce, garlic, vinegar and cayenne pepper. Take about a ¼ cup of the marinade and put it in a separate bowl. Reserve the rest of the marinade in a large dish (to hold the two pork tenderloins after they are cooked) and set aside. Brush the ¼ cup of marinade on the pork and sprinkle with kosher salt. Brush some marinade on the peaches too. Place the pork and on a grill and cook on all sides. Cook until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees. Also place the peaches on the grill cut side down. After the peaches get a char on them, flip and cook for a few more minutes. Remove the pork and peaches from the grill. Place the pork into the reserved marinade and cover with foil and let sit for 10 minutes. It will continue to cook a bit and soak up the flavor. Slice the pork and spoon the rest of the marinade over the pork. Arrange the pork and cooked peaches on a platter and sprinkle the scallions on top.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss the potatoes with enough olive oil to coat and sprinkle with the rosemary and a pinch of kosher salt. Roast about an hour. In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice, mustard, salt, pepper, sugar and garlic. Slowly whisk in the olive oil until the dressing is totally emulsified. Set aside. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the asparagus in the water until they turn bright green — just 1 or 2 minutes. Remove the asparagus and transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking. Once they are cool, slice to about ¼ inch pieces. When the potatoes are done, transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Pour about half the dressing over the potatoes. Add the sliced asparagus and toss to combine. Serve warm or at room temperature with the extra dressing on the side because some people like extra dressing and they shouldn’t be denied.

Chimichurri Steak Sandwiches Serves 4-6

FOR THE STEAK

2

pounds flank or skirt steak

FOR THE CHIMICHURRI

1 1 2 3 1 3 ¾ 1

bunch of parsley bunch of cilantro tablespoons of fresh oregano garlic cloves jalapeño (optional) tablespoons of red wine vinegar cup of olive oil teaspoon kosher salt

FOR THE GARLIC BREAD

1 ½ 2-3 3-4 3-4

loaf French bread stick butter, softened tablespoons olive oil garlic cloves, minced tablespoons Parmesan cheese (optional) kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

Corn Salad

Serves 5-7 I N G R E D I E N TS

6

½ ½ ½ 3 3 ½ ½

ears of corn, shucked cup red onion, diced cup basil, chopped pint grape tomatoes, halved tablespoons olive oil tablespoons cider vinegar teaspoon kosher salt teaspoon black pepper

DIRECTIONS

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Place the corn in the water, turn off the heat and cover the pot and let the corn sit for 3 minutes. Drain the corn and run it under cold water to stop the cooking. Cut the kernels off the cob. In a large mixing bowl, toss the corn kernels with the onions, tomatoes, olive oil and vinegar, salt and pepper. When you are ready to serve the salad, toss in the basil. You can serve this salad cold or at room temperature.

46

To make the chimichurri, place the herbs, garlic, jalapeño, vinegar and salt in a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Process until smooth. Slowly add in the olive oil while processing. Once combined, place the sauce in a small bowl. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees To make the garlic bread, in a small bowl, mash the garlic with butter and olive oil to form a paste. Cut the bread in half lengthwise and spread the garlic butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and a touch of Parmesan cheese if using. Wrap the bread tightly in foil and cook in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. You can turn the oven off and leave the bread in for a for a few more minutes to keep warm. Sprinkle the steak liberally with kosher salt. Cook on a super-hot grill for about 3 minutes on each side for medium rare. You can use a meat thermometer, or I just usually poke it with my finger to test for doneness. (Here’s a tip. While the meat is still raw, poke it with your finger so you know what that feels like as a baseline. As the meat cooks it will have more resistance and feel firmer to your poking.) Remove the meat and place on a cutting board. Sprinkle cooked steak with freshly ground black pepper and tent loosely with foil. Let the meat rest for 10-15 minutes. Slice the steak opposite the grain and place on the garlic bread. Top with chimichurri and serve more on the side. Slice the sandwiches into individual portions. (Veggie version: Grill a few portobello mushroom caps, slice them up and make sandwiches just like the steak.)

American Pie (Blueberry and Strawberry Galette) Serves 12-14 FOR THE DOUGH

2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon kosher salt FOR THE FILLING

5 1

cups strawberries, sliced cup blueberries

TO P P I N G

1 1

cup heavy cream teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS

In a food processor fitted with the steel blade, mix together the flour, sugar and salt. In a measuring cup, lightly beat the two eggs and add enough heavy cream so you have 2/3 cup. Whisk the cream and egg together. Add the butter to the flour mixture in the food processor. Pulse about 6 times. Don’t overdo it. You are looking for chick pea sized butter pieces. Add the cream mixture in and pulse until it just comes together. Turn the dough out on a floured board and form a large disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 3 days. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees

48

2 ⅔

large eggs cup heavy cream (a touch less)

1

sticks unsalted butter (1 cup), cut into pieces tablespoon lemon juice

½-1 cup of sugar (depending on how sweet your berries are) pinch of salt

1 6

lemon, juice and zest tablespoons cornstarch

1

1

teaspoon sugar (for sprinkling)

egg, beaten with a little water or milk (for egg wash)

Roll out the dough so it is rough 10 x 14inch rectangle. Place on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment and refrigerate while you are making the filling. To make the filling, mix the berries with the sugar, lemon juice and zest and the cornstarch. You want to leave a 2 inch border around the dough when you are placing the fruit. Place the blueberries in the top left corner forming a square and then fill the rest of the area with the strawberries — so it looks like a flag. Gently start folding the edges over the fruit. Galettes should be rustic so don’t worry if it looks ragged. Brush the

2

pastry with an egg wash made of one egg and a touch of milk or water. Sprinkle the pastry with a touch of sugar. Bake for 35-45 minutes until the fruit is bubbling. It must be bubbling for the cornstarch to work as a thickener. The crust should be golden. Transfer carefully to a wire rack and let cool. In a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk the cream, sugar and vanilla until it forms stiff peaks. Fill a piping bag fitted with a star tip with the whipped cream and pipe “white stripes” onto the strawberries and “stars” onto the blueberries. Make Betsy Ross proud.

A $1.5 billion expansion to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood will open on October 24 and promises to make the location a premiere destination for world-travelers. The centerpiece of the expansion is the Hard Rock’s giant, iconic guitar-shaped hotel. The building is the world’s first of its kind and houses 638 luxury guest rooms. An adjacent 168-room tower will overlook a new pool lagoon and feature Bali-style, swim out rooms. The property will also unveil an expanded gaming floor, a new Rock Spa, 13.5 acres of recreational waterscape, premier meeting and convention space, an entertainment venue, night clubs, retail shops and much more.

50

EXPANSIONS This light and water fountain is called the Occulus. It will have choreographed shows and serve as a grand entrance to the new Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The retail area of the new Seminole Hard Rock casino is stunning. New retail offerings wind their way along a 26,000-square-foot promenade of boutique storefronts, temptingly unique and sleekly located along a marble-floored walkway leading from the Lucky Street Garage. In addition to retail shops, the completion of the expansion project will bring a total of 16 unique concept restaurants and 20 bars and nightlife. There will be a wide range of dining options. Opening this fall will be a contemporary Italian restaurant; Latin American- and Spanish-inspired solid fuel grilling concept; new 24-hour restaurant offering time-honored classics; buffet with a variety of menu selections and live action stations; and artisanal coffee shop with baked goods made in-house daily. There will also be a brand new Lobby Bar and Center Bar.

The new 6,500-seat Hard Rock Live will be a state-of-theart entertainment venue with technical capabilities to support A-List acts, as well as nationally televised awards shows, sporting events and more. Acoustically pure with unobstructed sightlines, the venue will be a standout option for entertainers and tours across the country as well as internationally renowned acts. For the opening weekend Oct. 25, Maroon 5 will perform. And on Nov.7, Andrea Bocelli will perform. The venue has also partnered with the Nederlander Group — the show business dynasty that, since 1912, has brought top touring Broadway shows to venues across the U.S. Guests will get the opulence of Broadway right in Hollywood.

A stunning 13.5-acre pool lagoon will be a highlight of the new integrated resort. THREE DISTINCT WATERFRONT AREAS will delight guests with multiple options to enjoy the sun-filled skies of South Florida. Options include a true beach-style experience, created with locally sourced Florida sand dotted with comfortable beach chairs; a private, tropical lagoonstyle setting amidst waterfalls and swaying palms; and a large water expanse, nearly as long as three football fields, that will offer water activities such as canoeing, paddle-boarding and more. Guests looking for a more luxurious offering can indulge in the Bora Bora experience which features overwater villas spanning 450-800 square feet, each equipped with personal plunge pools, private bathrooms and butler service. The iconic guitar-shaped hotel will tower above it all.

Rock Spa is a 27,000-square-foot, full-service, luxurious spa offering a complete range of treatments and healing therapies in deluxe rooms, refreshing baths, steam rooms, saunas and more. The spa also features a full-service beauty salon and barbershop offering professional hair-care services for men and women. Hotel guests have complimentary access to the gym, which features complimentary weights, treadmills, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers, flat screen televisions and a mirrored wall.

POMPANO BEACH’S LIVE! RESORTS POMPANO AIMS TO BECOME ONE OF LARGEST MIXED-USE PROJECTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

A

nticipation continues to grow as new steps are taken to make Live! Resorts Pompano a reality. Live! Resorts Pompano is the rebranded redevelopment project at the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park owned by Eldorado Resorts and Cordish Companies. The project is pushing to become one of the largest mixed-use projects in South Florida, including a casino, the Live! Event venue, a commercial sports venue,

Renderings of what the project could look like:

restaurants, a hotel, a driving range called Topgolf, a lake, open green space and 300,000 square feet of additional commercial uses such as retail, restaurants and a movie theater. The project is branded Live! as part of the Live! entertainment destinations brand by Cordish Companies., which includes some high profile sports and entertainment destinations across the country, such as Texas Live!, Xfinity Live!, Kansas City Live! and Fox Sports Midwest Live! On June 5 Pompano Beach’s Development Review Committee reviewed a “Land Use Plan Text Amendment” in order to change the entitlements to add residential units and adjust nonresidential

square footages. The applicant requested approval of a total density increase from the plot amendments, which would add 764,478 square feet of commercial space, 1.31 million square feet of commercial recreation uses, 951,350 square feet of office space, 1,300 residential units and 250 hotel rooms to what’s currently permitted. The underlying land use will remain RAC (Regional Activity Center). At a community meeting held on April 30, Cordish presented a preliminary overview of the project and said it is slated for groundbreaking in the summer of 2020 with the full buildout, done in phases, taking at least 10 years. The developers currently have a pending rezoning application, which details those phases. The first phase of the site plan shows the Topgolf, which would be the first driving range/entertainment destination in

Broward County. Then, the area that currently has a race track would be converted into a lake and open green space. A 300-seat Jai Alai venue would replace horse racing. Additional phases would build out the remaining elements to the project. Eldorado acquired the property through the purchase of 13 casino resorts from Capri Casinos in 2016. The developers are working with planning firm Keith & Associates on the application. Attorney Debbie Orshefsky represents the developers. Elkus Manfredi is the architect.
