What’s (for) Lunch? WHEN MY KIDS WERE LITTLE, I WORKED FULL-TIME SO I SCHEDULED MY HAIR APPOINTMENTS ON SATURDAYS. THIS WAY MY BEAUTY REGIMEN DIDN’T INTERFERE WITH work. More importantly, I could sneak in a little “me” time away from my toddlers. While serving no obvious purpose, toddlers require a great deal of care. They’re strictly just for show. Often they are emphatically needy and somehow they are always a bit sticky. I mean you can bust out the baby wipes; bath them; dunk them in the pool. Trust me, in three minutes they’re sticky again. They’re like the monster in the movie “Aliens.” Back then I drove 30 minutes each way to my hairdresser. My husband would ask, “Really? There is no one in our own area code who can cut your hair?” Nope, that hour of drive time was priceless. One day, while I was getting my haircut, a nearby colorist complained of a last minute cancellation for highlights. At this point in my life, I had no gray hair — which is somewhat of a miracle considering I lived with two extraordinarily sticky toddlers. Anyway I raised my hand, “How long will highlights take?” After an oddly intense and detailed discussion concerning various approaches to highlights, the colorist painstakingly applied stripes of white stuff to be quickly covered with foil. I wasn’t all that excited about the highlights — but another hour of “me time” was well worth the additional cost. I had been away for hours and was certain my husband Richard must have prepared lunch for our aforementioned toddlers. Fantastic. One less thing for me to do. I arrived home (with my new chic highlights) and inquired about lunch. Richard merely shrugged and exhibited a vapid stare. After several go-’rounds of me asking what he fed them and him looking as if he was hoping to enter the witness protection program, he offered up “I didn’t make them lunch. They never asked for lunch.” Apparently he did not realize that toddlers, in addition to being quite sticky, are like puppies. One does not wait for them to ask for food. You put out food and they come and get it. The ensuing argument between us was epic. But alas, he did not learn. This would not be the last time he overlooked the nutritional needs of our children.
10
Several years later while on vacation in Savannah with my parents and my sister’s family, Richard offered to entertain our kids and their two cousins for the whole day. My sister, mother and I were so excited at the prospect of some quality time at the hotel spa, that we failed to provide Richard with any detailed instructions. We simply waved goodbye to that minivan with the unbridled joy of a hockey player who has found his newly missing teeth resting on the ice. They were gone all day. Upon their return, we met them in the hotel lobby. As a family somewhat obsessed with food (particularly during travel), the first thing we asked was, “What did you have for lunch?” We didn’t care where they went or what they saw. Only what they ate? When Richard replied with “Nothing, they never asked for lunch,” I thought my mother might pass out. She has three son-inlaws. Thanks to a lunchless day, Richard’s ranking plummeted to a distant third. He never saw it coming. My mother, clearly shaken, gently nudged my father away from the crowd and whispered “Marty, what do you make of this?” At this point, I am certain my father was engaged in two separate, yet simultaneous conversations with my mother. First, the public version. The second, I am sure, was happening within the confines of his own mind. I will provide snippets from both. Drawing on over 55 years of marriage, he completely commiserated with my mother, “Yes Dear, how awful not to stop for lunch — not even a trip to McDonald’s? Only a man of weak moral character does not seek sustenance for his offspring.” Conversely, his imaginary answer probably went something like this, “I believe the dry martini was invented for circumstances precisely such as the one within which we find ourselves at this moment.” That fateful day in Savannah was 10 years ago. These days I get my hair colored to cover up a plethora of gray and Richard’s ranking has steadily improved. As for my savored “me” time, Richard and I are only two years away from a new life as emptynesters. And while I look forward to this uncharted territory, Saturday lunches with sticky toddlers seems delightfully appealing to me now.

The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds: THE FINAL PERFORMANCES AT THE POMPANO BEACH AMPHITHEATER
FEATURING NEW FOUND GLORY, CHRIS CARRABBA OF DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL AND RYAN KEY OF YELLOWCARD New Found Glory, a punk-rock band with musicians who graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, will headline #ParklandStrong, a benefit concert for the victims of the school tragedy. All proceeds from the concert, including ticket sales, concessions, merchandise and sponsorships, will be donated to the official Broward Education Foundation Stoneman Douglas Fund. “Half of our band went to MSD, so it is important to us that we do as much as we possibly can to help the school and families of the victims. They deserve our love, support, and help, and we will help in any way we can,” wrote New Found Glory in a press statement. New Found Glory emerged as part of the pop punk scene of the late 1990s, and critics have hailed them as a pioneer of the genre. #Parkland Strong will also feature a raw acoustic set by Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional; and an ambient, acoustic set by the former lead vocalist of Yellowcard, Ryan Key. WHEN: Wednesday, May 16; Doors open at 5pm; Show starts at 6pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Amphitheater, 1801 NE Sixth St. COST: Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at theamppompano.org ABOVE The temporary shrine at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Brian Wilson’s Pet Sounds performance has been one of the most in-demand concert outings for the past two years. Wilson extended the run of the tour into 2018 and will be performing the album Pet Sounds in its entirety, as well as top hits and fan favorites spanning his 54-year career with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist. “We are blown away by the reception of this tour, it’s unbelievable how many people love this album,” said Wilson in a press release. “The audiences have been so fantastic, and we are honored to play for them. We never expected this reaction, so we will continue to perform this album for people as long as they ask us to.” Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes. Wilson has also achieved great success as a solo artist with 11 of his own albums released to-date, and two Grammy awards. WHEN: Sunday, May 20; Doors open at 6:30pm; Show starts at 7:30pm WHERE: Pompano Beach Amphitheater, 1801 NE Sixth St. COST: Tickets range between $34.50 and $85. Let the Soccer Games Begin A SOCCER-CENTRIC SPORTS COMPLEX IS COMING TO POMPANO BEACH The City of Pompano Beach is set to become a center for soccer development in the United States. The Floridians Football Club is moving forward with plans to build a multimillion-dollar sports complex on a 12-acre city-owned parcel on Northwest 31st Ave. in the Palm Aire area. It will be a place where boys and girls, ages 4 to 20, can

develop their soccer skills, with the goal of playing on college or professional teams. The proposed project will also be the new home of the Floridians semi-professional soccer team that competes at the national and international level. For the last five years, the team was based in Lauderhill, but will relocate to Pompano Beach when the new facility is built. The name of the athletic complex will be Floridians Sports Park, said Franck Gotsman, the developer of the project. Gotsman is co-owner of the Floridians Football Club and VicePresident of Plantation-based Azur Equities. The plans include a 500-1,000 seat stadium; a 14,000-square-foot clubhouse with a gymnasium, cafeteria, offices and classroom; two adult regulation soccer fields; three
covered smaller soccer fields; 3-5 covered multi-sports fields; and 80-100 apartments to house players. “The sports park is going to be a top-of-the line facility to help the most capable, dedicated players reach the best level they can achieve,” said Gotsman, who hopes the facility will attract not just local players, but players from all over the world. “We’re going to try to find the best players,” he said, “but the more we can find from Pompano Beach the better.” Gotsman is developing a recreational league with Pompano Beach that will be held at parks throughout the city. It will be a 10-week program offered four times during the school year, with the first one expected to start toward the end of this August. Each session will cost $135, with a discount for Pompano Beach residents. There will also be scholarships for Pompano residents who need financial assistance. From the recreational league, players can move up to a travel league, which may start next year. The next level is the academy league, which is for about 200-300 boys and girls, ages 14 to 17, who will live in the residences at the sports park. Scholarships will also be offered to Pompano Beach residents at the travel and academy league levels. The highest level will be a spot on the semi-professional Floridians team, for those who make it through the try-outs. Gotsman said the plan is to host international soccer tournaments, and to have some of the world’s top professional teams come train at the sports park during their breaks. While most of the activities at the complex will be centered around soccer, the multi-purpose fields can be used for basketball, volleyball, rugby and tennis. The main stadium can also be used for football games and concerts. In March, the City Commission unanimously approved a “memorandum of understanding” with the developer. >>>

<<< The agreement outlines pre-development activities, such as permitting, that the city and developer need to undertake while the terms and conditions of the final development agreement and land lease are negotiated. “We wanted a place where we could be part of the community,” said Gotsman, “and that’s the feeling we had when we came to Pompano. It just felt like home.” Gotsman anticipates the whole project will cost over $20 million and will take 18-24 months to complete, with construction starting by spring of 2019. He said the complex is expected to create over 100 jobs once it’s opened.
“There aren’t really any complexes like this nowadays,” said Gotsman. “It’s going to put Pompano Beach on the map as far as soccer development is concerned.” Before construction can begin, the site, which has been determined to be a “brown field,” needs to be cleaned of chemicals and pesticides that have built up in the soil over the years. This process will cost the city $1.5 million, and involves removing the contaminated soil and replacing it with clean soil. The city expects to receive a Voluntary Cleanup Tax Credit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for up to 75 percent of the costs. To complement the infrastructure of the sports park, Azur Equities and the Floridians Football Club will be developing about 80 townhomes within walking distance that will be used for out-of-town players, families and coaches.
Rededication of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard For decades, the main thoroughfare in the city’s northwest district has had the dual name of Hammondville Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, but now it will officially be known solely as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a change that was almost thirty years in the making. At a rededication ceremony in March, Commissioner Beverly Perkins, who represents the northwest section of the city, explained that the movement to rename the street after civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. started in 1990, when she became president of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Committee. Perkins recounted the opposition that she and the committee encountered in their effort to change the street’s name so it would no longer honor Hiram Hammon, a 19th century Palm Beach County farmer who pioneered

one of the earliest farms just west of Pompano Beach, in an area now known as Margate. There are members of the northwest community who remember picking beans and other crops in the local fields for low wages. The six-month struggle to rename the street, which included a “peace march” of hundreds of people to city hall, was covered by local and national news outlets. In 1991, the City Commission decided that the street would have a dual name. “In my heart, I disagreed,” said Perkins, who, once she became a commissioner in 2016, made it one of her goals to remove Hammondville from the street name. The current City Commission has initiated a project to have two bronze statues – one of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and one of former President Barack

Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center Will Finally Become A Reality After years of delays, the Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center is about to be built on the vacant parcel located at 2669 N. Federal Highway in Pompano’s Cresthaven neighborhood. Burrie, who serves as City Commissioner of District 2, has been pushing for a civic center for the residents in that neighborhood since she was elected in 2007, and it was the residents who wanted to name the center after her. Even before Burrie came into office, the city had plans to build a civic center, but it never materialized. After considering several sites, the city purchased the 1-acre lot on Federal Highway for $1,150,000 in 2013. Last month, the City Commission voted to award the project to Shiff Construction & Development, a Pompano Beach contractor, at a cost of $4,498,475.76. Construction is expected to start in about four months, and should be completed in about a year. Renderings of the Charlotte J. Burrie Civic Center RIGHT Charlotte J Burrie

The civic center will include two activity rooms, a conference room, a warming kitchen and a large assembly space with a fixed platform stage and dressing rooms. The assembly space can hold 250 people theaterstyle or 120 people banquet-style. The building will have a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. In 2015, Burrie was selected by the City Commission to serve as Vice Mayor of Pompano Beach. She has been a lawyer in private practice for almost thirty years, and held the position of Pompano Beach City Clerk for eleven years. “My constituents and the residents deserve this, finally, after all these years,” Burrie said, before the Commission voted to approve the contractor’s bid. Several commissioners agreed that the project was long overdue for the residents in the northern section of the city. “This is an exciting moment for our city to be able to finally move this forward,” said Mayor Lamar Fisher.

A Gem of a Town LAST MONTH WE TOLD YOU POMPANO BEACH HAD BEEN RECOGNIZED BY BOTH TIME’S ONLINE MONEY MAGAZINE AND EXPEDIA AS A GREAT PLACE TO TRAVEL. THAT’S AN incredible double honor for our hometown. I could go into detail about all the reasons we deserved these honors, but instead, I’m going to share a few places that make Pompano Beach special to me. My favorite “hidden spot” in Pompano is the beach next to the Hillsboro Inlet on the side across from the Hillsboro Lighthouse. This area is filled with mostly single-family homes (the ones that easily top the million dollar range), so it’s essentially like a private beach. To get there, I ride my bike down A1A to an almost hidden public right-of-way just north of the Lighthouse Cove Resort. I follow the wooden planked path through an exotic tree- and pondlined maze, then park my bike and walk a few more feet to the beach. From there, it’s about half a mile to the inlet. Bring a chair

or sit on the rickety pier. It’s an unbelievable place for some quiet beach time, watching the boats head in and out of the inlet, and for a close-up view of the lighthouse. Speaking of “hidden” gems, my favorite low-key waterside restaurant/bar in town is in plain sight, but still, most locals don’t seem to know about it. The Sands Harbor Hotel Patio Bar and Grill (located at 125 N. Riverside Drive) is an all outdoors joint on the east side of the intracoastal, meaning fantastic sunset views. There’s room for about half a dozen boats to dock, adding to the atmosphere, as do the frequent live bands playing classic rock, reggae and, of course, Jimmy Buffett (mandated by state law, I believe). The food is basic but good, the prices are very reasonable and the drinks are mighty tasty. I wouldn’t describe the brand new Pompano Beach House as a “hidden” gem. It has been perhaps the most eagerly anticipated restaurant opening in Pompano Beach in decades. The Beach House is a cornerstone of the Fishing Village/Pier project and has

spectacular ocean views. I was on-hand for the pre-opening soft launch, and although the menu was limited, everything I sampled was fantastic. The sushi might have be the freshest, most flavorful I have ever eaten in South Florida. I can’t wait to go back, and I highly recommend you make reservations as soon as possible. If you’ve got your own personal favorite spot, please let me know (jeff@pointpubs.com) We’ll feature some of your recommendations in an upcoming issue of Pompano! Magazine. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT.... • The penthouse apartment at the new Arya boutique condo reportedly sold for over $1 million. That’s got to be a record for a Pompano Beach condo not even located on the beach. The small seven-story building with approximately 20 units is tucked away between A1A and Riverside Drive on Sunset Drive. • If you’ve eaten at Nikki’s Orange Kitchen or walked by the Oceanside Plaza Condo (corner of A1A and E. Atlantic Blvd.), you may have noticed provocative S&M styled posters featuring scantily clad men in suggestive leather outfits. They are there to promote the possible future home of “Leather and Beyond Boutique.” I say possible because Oceanside Plaza residents and city officials are all whipped up about the shop and are hoping the courts will restrain it from opening. • Congratulations to Richard Rosser for being named 2018’s Small Business Person of the Year by the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Lighthouse Point Chamber Council. Richard is the publisher of this magazine, so that makes him my boss. But even if that wasn’t the case, I would still say that Richard is incredibly deserving of the award. In an era when print publications are disappearing and locally owned media companies are being supplanted by big international corporations, Richard and his wife, Susan, have dedicated themselves to providing Northern Broward County with quality local information in print and online. • And lastly, I bring you my best Seinfeld imitation: “What’s the deal with these ‘Parking Ambassadors’?” You’ve probably noticed the little cars that drive around town giving people... parking tickets. Launched a few years ago, I’m sure someone in city hall wanted to put a friendly spin on one of the most hated city services. So, they came up with “Parking Ambassador.” Call it whatever you want, but when my meter expired five minutes ago and I find a ticket on my windshield, I am still going to call it a pain in my... ambassador. Building Dream Cars BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU REDLINE MOTORSPORTS, BASED IN POMPANO BEACH, IS A DREAMSCAPE FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS. THE COMPANY SPECIALIZES IN LATE MODEL GM PERFORMANCE CARS such as Corvettes, Camaros and CTSV Cadillac’s. This includes building custom engines, engine calibration, chassis setups, parts fabrication and power adders to modify cars for both street driving and all out racing. “We make fast cars faster,” said Howard Tanner, the president and owner of Redline Motorsports. Redline originated in New York and has been in Pompano Beach now for six years. Tanner said he’s been a “car nut since 15” and
“a maniac” since they gave him a driver’s license. As a teenager, Tanner started modifying cars, such as ’67 Camaros, a ’70 Nova, and various other old-school muscle cars. When he was between eight and ten years old, his grandfather, who had a background in engineering, exposed Tanner to electronics. knowledge in electronics and a passion for modifying muscle cars, Tanner had what it took to build some fast cars. In the mid-to-late ’80s, he began modifying cars out of his mother’s garage where Redline Motorsports was born. In the years after completing Hudson Valley Community College’s automotive engineering program, Tanner had a few life challenges. He was involved in a car accident, then later was diagnosed with cancer. After his recovery, Tanner put his love of cars on the back-burner and got involved in the commercial glass industry. In 1998, however, the itch to return to his passion grew strong. He resurrected Redline Motorsports and, over the course of 19 years has turned the passion into a nationally and internationally recognized player in the performance industry. Tanner recently returned from a trip from Dubai where Redline Motorsports has a big customer base. “It’s been a great opportunity to be a part of another country’s growth in the performance scene,” Tanner said. “It’s something we have worked hard to build and has been paying off for our growth. We just shipped two 2018 ZL1 Camaros fitted with our 1000 HP packages as well as 20 engines this year alone.” The company’s overall experience and reputation has been its greatest asset. “Our company has always been on the cutting edge,” said Tanner. “We are always obtaining new models as they are released. We are always trying to look beyond tomorrow. The future of our industry is leading into more compact engines with more technology. For this, we are preparing ourselves in what is ahead. Our connections in the industry have also grown and has allowed us access to these technologies early.” With the company’s recent purchase of a building in Pompano Beach’s industrial zone, Tanner has also been active as a trustee on the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce. Redline Motorsports is located at 1861 N. Powerline Rd. in Pompano Beach. For more information visit redline-motorsports.net, call 954-703-5560 or email sales@redline-motorsports.net.

A Little Down Time for Mother’s Day BY DAWNE RICHARDS
AHH, MOTHER’S DAY! THE DAY THAT EVERY MOTHER DREAMS OF…NO. NOT TO BE A CURMUDGEON – ACTUALLY, IGNORE THAT. I DO TEND TO GET A BIT curmudgeonly about some of these holidays. That qualifies as Understatement of the Year. To paraphrase a beloved former manager, “I don’t do holidays invented by greeting card companies.” Not that Mother’s Day was invented by a greeting card company; far from it. One could argue, however, that it was the subject of a hostile takeover, having been
founded in the early 1900s by the determined Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, as a day to commemorate the death of her beloved mother. Thus began Miss Jarvis’ tireless quest make Mother’s Day an official holiday. She wrote to national and international leaders urging them to honor the day, but did not foresee the unintended consequences of her actions. She won over President Woodrow Wilson, who was impressed by her passion, and in 1914, “Mother’s Day” became an official holiday.
30
In Miss Jarvis’ opinion, the holiday quickly spun out of control, and she spent much of the remainder of her life railing against the commercialization of the holiday and what she viewed as others’ attempts to co-opt it, taking up virtual arms against such formidable opponents as Eleanor Roosevelt. According to the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, “Miss Jarvis, a lonely spinster…died blind and penniless.” See what happens? There’s a lesson in there somewhere, but I’m not quite sure what it is. Fast forward nearly 100 years; I, a mother of two girls under three, had no grand visions beyond making it through the day. “Would you like to go out for Mother’s Day brunch?” My husband asked. “NO!” I shouted. “Here’s what I would like! I would like YOU to go out for Mother’s Day brunch. With the girls.” He looked a bit taken aback. “And…?” “And I,” I pronounced, “will sit here. In my kitchen. In peace. With my coffee. And the newspaper. Dear God, the glorious Sunday newspaper. I will sit here in silence, unless I choose to listen to NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday on the radio. THAT is what I want for Mother’s Day.” It was the best Mother’s Day ever. Now, before you get up in arms, yes of course I love my children. I love going out to nice restaurants. I love holidays. But the mashup of brunchtoddlerscrowdswaits is my idea of hell on earth, and I truly cannot understand the desire to engage in such torturous festivities. Do I judge others who DO enjoy such pastimes? Of course I do(n’t). Really, I don’t. To each her own. If that’s your cup of tea, then by all means have a WONDERFUL time. I, on the other hand, will remain in my dining room. Coffee in hand, newspaper spread out on the table, NPR on the radio…you’re welcome to stop by. Please don’t feel at all compelled to buy me a Mother’s Day card, however. I stand in solidarity with Miss Jarvis. Y Source: http://www.wvculture.org/history/women/ mothersday04.html

Transformation Through Art The City of Pompano Beach’s electric utility boxes are being transformed into colorful works of art thanks to the Utility Wrap Project organized by the city’s Public Art Committee. One artist chosen to complete two of the city’s electric boxes in phase two of the project has a story of transformation just as remarkable as the boxes he’s creating. By Danielle Charbonneau
The drab steel electric boxes on street corners with traffic lights can serve as both eyesores and blank canvasses for graffiti artists, vandalism and marketing posters. In Pompano Beach, however, many of those once ugly boxes have been transformed into colorful works of art. The city’s Public Art Committee is responsible for the Utility Wrap Project. The committee has completed the first phase of the project, which included 46 electric boxes. Phase two is now underway, which includes 43 boxes and is projected to be completed in the next 12 to 18 months. In the first round of the Utility Wrap Project, the Public Art Committee issued a call to artists seeking themed work that would reflect the location of each box. In the second round, the artists were encouraged to submit work of any kind. “We found that the themes limited us a little bit,” said Laura Atria, Pompano Beach’s Public Art Program Manager. “So the second round was far more open.” Of the 30 artists selected for the 43 boxes in phase two, 17 are from Florida. One of those artists, a Miami-based, self-taught painter, sculptor and illustrator, has an inspiring story of transformation.
Jonathan’s Story
Jonathan Aizenstat is an artist and children’s book illustrator who has overcome extreme obstacles to pursue his passion. As a child, Jonathan was
diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in many different organs including the skin, brain and kidneys. These irregularities can cause extreme developmental problems and learning disabilities similar to autism, as well as skin and facial abnormalities. As a result of TSC, Jonathan was brutally bullied as a child and had difficulty with the most basic of tasks. His mother Beatrice gets teary-eyed as she recounts the days Jonathan came home from school soaking wet, without his bike, having been thrown in the canal by other kids; or the mornings when Jonathan would come down for breakfast with his clothes on backwards. Teaching Jonathan to tie his shoes as a kid was a major accomplishment. Growing up, Adrian, Jonathan’s younger brother by two years was Jonathan’s protector and best friend. Throughout adolescence and into adulthood, Jonathan struggled with bouts of debilitating depression. As the years passed, the thought of Jonathan living an independent lifestyle, at times, seemed impossible. But about three years ago, when Jonathan reached his early 30s, he honed in on a passion for art and illustration. With a clear focus, his life transformed. In essence Jonathan found his true north — a compass with which to guide his energy and time. “It’s something that has driven me to be stronger,” Jonathan said.
33
Jonathan’s mother Beatrice is a professional artist herself having trained under renowned artists all over the world. The walls and surfaces of the Aizenstat home are covered in stunning paintings, photography and sculptures. Beatrice’s garage is also home to her extensive collection of dolls and accessories. Jonathan’s father too is a creative — a professional architect who once owned a children’s toy store in Bolivia. Jonathan grew up with these two creative minds. He also fondly remembers watching animated films

and television — Nickelodeon and Pixar. These ingredients seem to have coalesced into Jonathan’s vivid, playful imagination, which he now channels into his art and illustrations. Now Jonathan’s room, too, is filled with art supplies — sculptures, a drafting table, paints, markers and colored pencils. Jonathan had dabbled in art as a kid. Beatrice
would occasionally take him to the ceramics studio with her or sit him down with art supplies; but it wasn’t until his early 30s that Jonathan decided to seriously pursue art and illustration. Once he did, the ripple effect was profound. Tasks that once seemed impossible — such as learning to drive — suddenly became less daunting. Before, when Jonathan had attempted to learn to drive, his mind couldn’t comprehend the consecutive nature of numbers or the order of street signs. He would easily get lost. The frustration of learning would deter him, but when backed by a drive to become a better artist, the frustration became more bearable. Jonathan learned to drive in order to transport himself to the ceramics studio. Art also has expanded his ability to understand spatial relationships and dimension, which is reflected in the progression of his work. Jonathan’s first major published project is a children’s book called “No Time for Pizza.” The book is a collection of playful, cartoon-like drawings with a signature (and semi-alterego) character named Don Yoni. That book was recently inaugurated into circulation into the Miami-Dade Public Library system and acknowledged by Florida State Governor Rick Scott. Since then, Jonathan’s tackled threedimensional projects. He was commissioned to paint a two-walled mural at JAWS podiatry in Hollywood with an underwater, shark theme. Recently, Jonathan created the “Pizza Lamborghini.” His Watercolor paintings were

used to create a digital vinyl wrap for a 2017 Lamborghini Huracán for theRide2Revive Charity Track Event at the Miami-Homestead Speedway. The event provides kids with life-threatening illnesses a memorable, adrenaline-filled driving experience. The car was commissioned by Prestige Imports & Lamborghini and was designed as an immersive experience for the kids. Children were able to add vinyl pizza toppings to the car before it
circled the track. “For me it is about enjoying what I do,” said Jonathan. “In the Lamborghini I cried six or seven times. It’s emotion that you can’t contain…I can always get paid, but touching people to their core is what it’s about. ” Jonathan seems to have developed a knack for working with children, helping them to tap into their own creativity. Other Pompano Beach Public Art Projects Happening PAINTED POMPANO: SCHOOLS OF ART Painted Pompano: Schools of Art is a series of colorful painted Pompano fish sculptures about five feet tall that have been or will be installed around the city. The second round of the Painted Pompano series is underway. An unveiling ceremony of the latest 12 fish took place in March in the ArtsPlaza at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center (50 W. Atlantic Blvd.) They will continue to be showcased in the ArtsPlaza through mid-May before they are moved to their permanent locations throughout the city. The theme for the exhibition is “Schools of Art,” with each fish reflecting a different period of art history. From Renaissance to Art Deco to Pop Art, 12 “schools” are represented. The exhibit is part of the Pompano Beach Crossroads Project, which won a prestigious $100,000 National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” Grant for the City of Pompano Beach. The display is free and open to the public.
MOSAIC TEAM PROGRAM Mosaic artist Sonata Kazimieraitiene was selected for a two year Mosaic Team Program. Kazimieraitiene will be working with five apprentices who will learn the craft while helping her complete four distinct mosaic projects. The first project is entitled “Trail of the Honey Bees” and is already underway. The focus of the mosaics will be on the honey bee and all vegetation it helps pollinate. The one mile trail will stretch from general locations near the Ali Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts and the new Cultural Arts Center with the intention of connecting the community’s cultural resources. For more information on the artist, visit sonataka.com.
9-11 MEMORIAL The Public Art Committee issued a call to artists closing on April 5 for a 9-11 memorial. The City of Pompano Beach’s Fire Department has acquired a piece of steel from the World Trade Center for use in the memorial for the 343 first responders that died saving lives on September 11, 2001. The City will commission an artist to integrate the piece of steel into an artistic memorial in Founders Park.

About Pompano Beach’s Public Art Committee
In 2012, the City Commission adopted a public art ordinance to enhance the aesthetic and cultural value of the city by including works of art on public properties within the city. The City Commission next created the Public Art Committee to guide the implementation of this program. The Committee has created a Ten Year Master Plan, which proposes more than 27 unique projects. The Public Art Committee generally meets at 5pm every 3rd Thursday of the month in the City Commission Conference Room (100 W Atlantic Blvd.). Please confirm times before attending. For more information visit pbpublicart.com or contact Laura Atria at 954-786-4310.
Dade - Aventura Branch Library, Jonathan led a children’s art workshop to teach kids how to create their own animated Don Yoni characters. Jonathan has also been commissioned to create work for the sensory playroom at Victory Center’s new state-of-the art building which opened in March. The Victory Center is a non-profit that serves children with developmental disabilities in South Florida. Most recently, Jonathan was chosen to transform two of Pompano Beach’s utility boxes. Adrian accompanied Jonathan to Pompano Beach to explore, where Jonathan had the idea to create colorful, outdoor, animated scenes such as surfers, dog-walkers and smiling birds. The ten paintings Jonathan created to submit to Pompano Beach’s Art Committee show a major advancement in his work — from “No Time for Pizza’s” more one-dimensional characters, to more intricate expressions and depth. “I think technique you can learn, but what I don’t have is this huge imagination that this kid

has developed,” said Beatrice. “His world is with different colors. Drawing is not directed in your hand, it’s directed in your mind and what you see.” Adrian, the once protective brother, now helps Jonathan with the business and marketing aspects of being a professional artist. Jonathan finding art, in many ways, has transformed the entire family. “It’s emotional for sure,” Adrian said. “But Jonathan’s work is good. It stands on its feet. Sometimes he’ll come into my room in the middle of the night at 2 or 3 in the morning and I’ll just know he has something good. Those are the moments for me.” “What I want to point out is the miracle,” Beatrice added, “the miracle of transformation when you are recognized…when somebody tells you that you are good for something. There is gold in every human being. We had been working and working and working with him, but it was art brought him to this point. It’s totally amazing what art can do.” Y

FANCY GOWNS. TUXEDOS. BOUTONNIÈRES. LIMOUSINES AND DANCING. PROM IS A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR MOST AMERICAN TEENAGERS, BUT FOR SOME YOUNG PEOPLE BATTLING CANCER, PROM IS JUST A DREAM — A FADING MIRAGE IN THE DISTANCE.
Toxic chemotherapy treatments, medical complications and fatal conditions often prevent children with cancer from making it to prom. Prom to Remember is a non-profit organization that hosts a grand, redcarpet dance at the Fort Lauderdale RitzCarlton for local children and teenagers who are battling or have survived cancer. Pompano Beach resident Alexandra Orzech has been attending Prom to Remember every year since she was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma five years ago. This is her story.
By Danielle Charbonneau

The summer before fourth grade Alex had what she thought was a stubborn common cold. After some blood work and a visit to her pediatrician, Alex was told she had Bronchitis. When school started and the medication still hadn’t worked, Alex’s parents took her to an ear, nose and throat specialist who prescribed a precautionary ultrasound to rule out further possibilities. Alex’s dad Richard took her for the ultrasound on a sunny Saturday morning. On Monday, he received a dreadful call: the ultrasound had turned up something troubling. He was instructed to bring Alex
was just going to go on some antibiotics and would go back to school. I’d go see all my friends and everything would go back to normal, but that didn’t happen at all,” Alex said. The following morning an oncologist explained Alex’s diagnosis and course of treatment — three years of toxic chemotherapy and a series of operations. “It was terrible — almost surreal. You can’t even believe its happening,” said Richard. “I would explain it almost as going into a state of shock. Your body just takes over and you just do what the doctors recommend and take it from there, not knowing, at that time, what a journey is ahead of you.” Luckily, Alex’s type of cancer was curable. For her age range, the oncologist explained, there was about a 94 percent survival rate. The course of treatment, however, was treacherous.
to the emergency room immediately. He pulled Alex out of class that afternoon and took her to Broward North not knowing their lives were about to inexplicably change. “There, the bad news became worse news,” he said. “That night they did blood work and scans,” said Alex. “By the next morning they diagnosed me with lymphoblastic lymphoma.” The nurse who delivered the news happened to be an old family friend. “When she came into the room we could see tears in her eyes,” Richard said. “We knew something bad was happening. Then we got the word. They defined it as a mass and admitted her.” “I thought I’d be back to normal in a couple of days, that I
Complications caused by operations and infections are common. “If it wasn’t the cancer that would get you, then maybe an infection would. You’re always afraid that something is going to happen. Is the cancer going to come back? Will there be infection?” Richard said. “The drugs and chemo completely wiped out Alex’s system.” As a result, Alex had to stay primarily at the hospital, sometimes for months at a time. Broward North’s eighth floor became Alex’s new home. “I didn’t have the immune system to stay at home,” Alex said. “If I got a fever or anything I’d have 30 minutes to get to the ER before it turned fatal. There were times when I was getting

Other local childhood cancer organizations to support: chemo for days at a time, or operations back-to-back.” “Through the entire process you see your child at times laying there, 80 pounds, completely grey and there’s nothing you can do,” said Richard. “As a parent, we’re here to protect our children. But you’re powerless.” Richard said he got most of his strength from Alex. “There were times when I would be upset and kind of loose it. She would look a me and say. ‘Dad, it’s going to be ok. Don’t cry.’ Or ‘It’s not your fault dad.’ I would kind of get mad at myself for showing weakness in front of my child. But you can’t help it sometimes. Your emotions just take over. It’s a real emotional roller coaster.”
Forming Bonds & Finding Fun
While Richard got his strength from Alex, she got hers from the bonds she formed with some of the nurses and other patients. One nurse in particular, Melissa, had a major impact on Alex. Both Richard and Alex call her an “angel.” “When I first met Melissa she brought me to the side and told me she knew what I was going through,” said Alex. Melissa herself is a childhood cancer survivor. “She told me her story. She really helped me through a lot. She would lie in bed with me and hold me and comfort me and tell me how to get through certain situations.” ABOVE FAR LEFT: Alex Orzech wears a comical tee-shirt she made while undergoing chemotherapy at Broward North hospital. Alex said. “She taught me to stay positive and keep my sense of humor…to always keep fighting no matter what the situation is, and to always care for people.” Alex did keep her positive and humorous spirit. She even started making comical tee-shirts to wear while undergoing treatment — funny phrases like, “I’m having a no hair day” and “Chemo made me do it.” “I think Melissa has a lot to do with Alex’s full recovery,” said Richard. “Melissa has been an inspiration. She told us her story and she gave us hope.” Throughout Alex’s three years of treatment, she and her family also had the opportunity to meet other family’s like theirs struggling with childhood cancer. “You create bonds with families and you become a part of this fraternity that you really don’t want to be a part of, but you’re apart of it,” said Richard. “I think initially — with the pain of it all and the shock — you almost resist being a part of this group, but there’s no denying it. My advice to other parents or families would be to take advantage of it… You are not alone.” Now in remission, five years after her diagnosis and two since her last treatment, Alex has maintained friendships with the kids she met through treatment. “I made a lot of friends,” Alex said. “Unfortunately a lot of them did not make it, but the ones that have… our bonds are inseparable…We saw each other cry and laugh, and we saw each other at our weakest points.”
Prom to Remember
This year, Alex will get to reunite with some of those friends at Prom to Remember, a prom-style gala at the Ritz Carlton designed for kids who may never make it to their own high school prom. This will be Alex’s sixth time attending Prom to Remember. Approximately 200 kids are expected to attend from area hospitals. “We get ready at my hospital around two or three o’clock and then we hop on either a limo or party bus,” Alex said. “From
Childhood Cancer Statistics
there we drive to the Ritz Carlton all together. We hop off our vehicle and we head up to the fourth floor. There are people waiting and greeting us and we check in, walk down a red carpet. There’s cameras, there’s people clapping for us. We sit in a waiting area where there’s food and entertainment and wait for the ballroom to open up.” In the ballroom a DJ plays music and the kids get the chance to be kids again. Alex remembers well her first time at Prom to Remember. “It was the first time I didn’t have any pain and was distracted from everything that was going on,” she said. “The event itself has gotten better every year, but the groups are still there. The volunteers are still there. It’s really nice reuniting with everyone and enjoying ourselves.” “It is literally a red carpet greeting,” said Richard. “The press is there. There’s celebrities waiting for them. When that limousine bus pulls up it’s amazing -- not just seeing my own daughter come off, but to see these other children who have been through so much.”
What’s Next?
This year is Alex’s first year back at a traditional, brick-andmortar high school since she left in the fourth grade. She is attending Atlantic Technical High School with aspirations of joining the military — either army or navy. She said battling cancer has made her who she is today. “I am ten times stronger and now I know what I want to do with my life,” she said.”Now I know all I want to do is help people. I am more caring and thankful for everything that I have…If I ever have to, unfortunately, die as a young person, I would want to do it serving my country.” Richard also acknowledges how much cancer has strengthened Alex. “Even before Alex was diagnosed, even as a kid, she always had an old soul way about her,” he said. “I think the experience of cancer has just accelerated that.” Y
Each year, the parents of approximately 15,700 kids will hear the words “your child has cancer.” Across all ages, ethnic groups and socioeconomics, cancer remains the number one cause of death by disease in children. FOOD At the end of East Atlantic Boulevard, steps from the ocean, is Briny’s Irish Pub. There is a large beer selection plus the regular and, dare we say, unique mixed drinks. The kitchen offers an array of bar food as well as some classics like bangers and mash and fish-n-chips. The casual atmosphere is created by an immense array of nautical artifacts and oddities that fill every inch of the pub. Music plays constantly, often live with a dance floor if one is inclined. 3440 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-9423159 $

Calypso Restaurant and Raw Bar. CARIBBEAN Since they
opened their doors in 1990, Calypso has been a local favorite. This gem of a restaurant is known for their fresh, wild caught fish, Bahamian conch dishes, Jamaican jerk and American favorites too all served with an island flair. On any given day, look around and you’ll see fellow diners devouring their house special cutter (sandwich)—sautéed shrimp with garlic butter, mushrooms and cheddar all stuffed into a hollowed out kaiser roll. Check out the special board for a variety of locally caught fish with everything from grouper to snapper to wahoo among others. Plenty of land lubber options are also available including filet mignon. For island comfort food, don’t miss one of their curries or rotis. Fresh oysters and clams are also available. Wash it all down with a draft beer, a glass of wine or choose from over 40 different bottled beers. So if you are in search of high-quality ingredients, inventive cooking and a very welcoming staff, head over to Calypso. 460 S. Cypress Road, 954-942-1633 $$

Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN Sprechen sie Deutsch? You
don’t find many German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel — it’s divine a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

Great Indian Grill
2692 E Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Beach 954-532-7872
People are passionate about Indian food. Fans absolutely love it. Detractors can’t stand it. If you fall into the former category, you are in for a thrill. The Great Indian Grill is just that — great. Everything we tried (and we ate quite a bit) was packed with tantalizing Indian spices and flavors representing the many different regional styles of Indian cooking. As an Indian food fiend, I am over the moon about this new spot in Pompano Beach. Now, I just have to practice more yoga (another gift from India) so I can burn off all that naan, or at least not worry about it so much. —Susan Rosser

What we tasted There were six of us and we tried quite a bit —here is a sampling of our
outstanding dinner. We started with three appetizers for the table: SAMOSA CHAT deep fried turnover filled with seasoned potato and green peas, topped with chutney, chickpeas and sev (crunchy chick pea noodles) LASOONI GOBI batter fired cauliflower with garlic, ginger, onion, bell pepper and scallions. For our main course we shared CHICKEN 65 rice battered crispy chicken spiced with green chili and curry leaves TANDOORI CHICKEN bone-in chicken marinated with ginger, garlic, tandoori spices and grilled KUMARAKUM SNAPPER A whole red snapper cooked in a tandoor CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA chicken in a creamy tomato sauce with fenugreek, garlic and garam masala BIRIYANI basmati rice with a blend of spices and fresh herbs with choices of meats and vegetables to add GARLIC NAAN A flat leavened bread cooked in a clay oven and served warm.

Funny Ladies BY RICHARD ROSSER
A CONVERGENCE OF POWERFUL AND AMUSING FORCES HAVE COMBINED TO PUSH ME TO WRITE THIS COLUMN IN HONOR OF MOTHER’S DAY, WHICH OF course, should be every day but I’ll save that for another time. The tipping point of these forces was the discovery of the award-winning television show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon Prime. The lead character could have been based on the life of my mother-in-law, which in turn, highlights the parenting influences on my wife Susan. The show could be titled “This Is Why Susan Is the Way She Is.” The show follows the life of a 25-year-old, affluent, college-educated woman in 1958 New York City. Her idyllic life takes a turn when she becomes a stand-up comedian with a very strong feminist message. Throughout my marriage, I have observed two defining traits of my mother-in-law: her commitment to raise her three daughters to be educated, independent women, and her unfulfilled dream of being a professional comedy writer. The two go together — she was unable to pursue her dream, so she did all she could so her daughters could. She wanted to attend a college in Indiana because it had a renowned radio writing program. Her family denied her request and sent her to a college close to home where she studied English. She and Susan’s father were members of the venerable Friar’s Club, the New York City place for the biggest names in comedy and show business. One night while waiting for a cab, she struck up a conversation with a man also waiting for one. She was on a rant about getting home to relieve the babysitter but abruptly blurted out “ . . . AND YOU’RE ED SULLIVAN!” because he was. This was when Mr. Sullivan was watched weekly by 40 percent of all Americans. There will never be anyone bigger.
56
She had the desire, but no one will know if she had the talent to be successful in comedy. She certainly would have had more opportunity today than back in 1958, which the show makes painfully clear. It was harder for women in many aspects of American life. Sometimes, nearly impossible. Today, Susan’s mother has dementia and her best days are in the past. She has purged most of her memorabilia from her decades of life, except for a collection of coats, purses and one single box of photos and papers. When Susan opened the box, on top, were the business cards of her three daughters when they were all employed by prestigious companies like Arthur Andersen, Ogilvy & Mather and American Express — doing impressive jobs. She may have missed some opportunities for herself but she was certainly proud that her daughters were able to follow their dreams. And those cards were not on top by chance. If you can watch the show, that’s great. It is funny. But remember your own mother’s story and, if she is still alive, thank her for her efforts to help you become who you are today.
