Kickstarting the first season of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center’s arts programming will be the world premiere of “Shipwrecked of Reason – Half a Century in Cuban Art”. On loan from the Cuban government, the exhibit features 20 Cuban artists curated by world-renowned Cuban contemporary art expert Isabel Marie Pérez Pérez.
After a report by ProPublica, Florida’s Department of Education is set to investigate how schools classify students who leave high school without graduating. The article states that Florida may be underreporting how many students drop out of high school.

Daughter of Elaine IT’S SPRINGTIME, WHICH IN MY MIND MEANS it’s time to look for a new purse. Sure, this sounds easy enough and something most women enjoy. But, as I search for the perfect summer bag, I hear my mother’s voice in my head saying, “Never buy a pocketbook with a black lining.” This simple rule eliminates many top contenders for my 2017 summer bag. I suppose, if we’re lucky, our parents impart their accumulated wisdom upon us. And while the major lessons are the ones I often think are the most valuable…be kind, work hard, do good… it’s the little things my mother taught me that play like a loop in my head and often bring a smile to my face. Which brings me back to my handbag search. Each time I open up a prospective purse and see that ubiquitous black lining, I hear my mother say “Oh no, you’ll never be able to find anything in there.” And I must admit that every time I have bought a handbag with a black lining, I have lived to regret it. What woman hasn’t dug for her car keys in a dark parking lot? Who am I kidding? I’ve dug deep inside my purse, searching for keys or lipsticks while standing in my own kitchen. Pearl divers have an easier time recovering oysters from the sea. Just a few weeks ago, my husband Richard and I decided to attend a black tie gala at the last minute. No problem for me in the dress department because my mother’s fashion mantra is “When you see a pretty dress you like, buy it; because you can never find a dress when you
10
need one.” (To all the women of Northern Broward County— you’re welcome.) It was my mother who taught me you can pass off leftover meatloaf as pate—and I thought of her the other night, as I tried to serve some “pate” to Richard with a glass of wine. Of course there are plenty of other peripheral lessons from my mom, such as: always have cab fare home; everything is better with an egg; humor at the expense of others is never funny; and smaller chickens are tastier than big ones. Naturally, I am grateful for everything my mother taught me, but I love that I can’t buy a chicken without thinking of her. I love that when I eat cold, leftover meatloaf, I picture her winking at my dad as she offers him “pate” and a dry martini. My sisters and I have coined a nickname for ourselves. Whenever we realize we are doing or saying something exactly how our mother does, we call ourselves “daughter of Elaine.” I know that I often sound just like my own mother. I say the same stuff, in the same manner, at the same times, with all the same emphasis. Yes, I’ve become my mother—which lucky for me, is a good thing. I hope someday my kids can say the same.

City of Pompano Beach Receives State of Florida Urban Forestry Grant to Track Trees The City of Pompano Beach received a $15,000 grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Forestry to expand its tree database. The inventory catalogs trees for city-owned property, city rights of way and state-owned rights of way within the city limits. The city had an existing database of over 16,000 trees. The grant helped the project add data for 6,000 additional trees. Collected data for each tree includes GPS location coordinates, street addresses, species, common name, height, trunk diameter and condition for each tree. The database allows the city to accurately assess and report damage to trees, which improves the city’s chances to receive federal or state aid if necessary in the future. Additionally, tree inventory is used on a daily basis to improve the documentation of recurring maintenance. The inventory is a major component of a City Master Tree Plan, a road map which identifies what types of trees should be planted and where, to sustain the urban tree canopy.

PompanoPICKS Ben Carson Visits Pompano Beach to Salute New Habitat for Humanity Site On March 24, former presidential candidate and current Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson spoke at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Pompano Beach to rally around the “Rick Case Habitat Community”
“

– a planned nine-acre site where 77 Habitat for Humanity homes will be built. In addition to Carson, a number of other local and national leaders took the podium to speak, including Governor Rick Scott, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, CEO of Habitat for Humanity, Jonathan Rockford, and Rita and Rick Case. Carson encouraged the audience to see housing as the foundation for healthy families, children, education and health. The future Habitat community will be located on Northwest 15th Street adjacent to Hopewell. The city and Habitat for Humanity are in the process of raising money toward the project’s $16 million budget. So far, about half has been raised. The planned community will be the largest Habitat for Humanity community ever built in Broward County. According to The Coordinating Council of Broward and Habitat for Humanity, 50 percent of residents in Broward County spend more than 30 percent of their wages on shelter. Of renter households, over 50 percent are considered to be
extremely cost-burdened. Habitat for Humanity homeowners save close to 60 percent over comparable rents. Habitat’s chosen families partner to help handbuild their own homes, put $2,000 down and participate in an intense year-long home ownership educational program. To date, the Broward County branch of Habitat for Humanity has helped over 407 families realize the dream of homeownership. “This is a major undertaking full of excitement, opportunities and challenges,” said Habitat Broward’s CEO and Executive Director Nancy Robin. “When the community is completed it will be a great feeling to see so many families move into their new, affordable homes.”

Nikki’s Orange Kitchen and Finley’s a Taste of the Bahamas both held Grand Opening celebrations at the end of March. The restaurants were both supported by Pompano Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in an effort to revitalize the City. Nikki’s Orange Kitchen is a seaside restaurant in Oceanside Plaza specializing in fresh, healthy eats. It is owned by Nikki Marchelos, who is well-known for her Nikki’s Bikini Pies found in Whole Foods stores throughout the state. The excitement and energy of the reimagined beach area drew her to establish roots in Pompano Beach. Finley’s a Taste of the Bahamas was opened by Zera Booker, one of the original owners of the Finley’s Bahamian Restaurant on West Atlantic Blvd., which has been in business since 2004. Booker spent six years cultivating relationships with customers by being a vendor at the Pompano Beach Green Market. Her new brick and mortar, take-out-only location is located in the Northwest District of the Pompano Beach CRA in the recently developed 731 Shoppes on MLK Blvd. Nikki’s Orange Kitchen is located in Oceanside Plaza at 1 N. George Thorogood and the Destroyers at The Amp
The Amp is proud to present classic rock artist George Thorogood and the Destroyers. The band has amassed a catalog of hits that includes “Who Do You Love,” “I Drink Alone,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” “Move It On Over,” “Get a Haircut,” and the anthemic “Bad to the Bone.” With more than 40 years of touring and recording, 15 million albums sold, and 8,000 live shows, George and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – remain among the most relentless and relevant classic rock acts on tour today. The “Rock Party Tour” promises to raise the bar, rock the house and tear off the roof like never before. “We play for a different audience every night, and that keeps it fresh,” said Thorogood. “There are people who’ve never seen us before, and we have to impress them. There are fans that keep coming back, and we want to surprise them. This is my job. I’ve always loved it, and I love it now more than ever.” The group is also putting their talents to work by helping The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. The band will be donating $1 from each ticket sale of their “Rock Party Tour” to LLS. Driver’s Ed Gets a Whole New Meaning BY MISS ADVENTURE PHOTOS BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
I COULD FEEL A WALL OF PRESSURE ON MY CHEST AS WE launched down the straight of the Homestead-Miami Speedway in a Porsche GT4 like a jet taking off down a runway. I braced my heel on the floorboard as a jolt of adrenaline rushed up my spine and my back pressed firmly against the car’s bucket seat. I could feel the vibration of the track through my helmet and a buzz in my teeth as we whipped around corners, grazing the racing strips with each hairpin turn. As we came up tight behind the car in front of us, I gripped the door handle a little tighter and breathed deeply to fend off potential nausea. The experience quickly felt surreal, as if we were merely players in an arcade game. This, however, was entirely real — a fact my mind strained to remind me of. I felt an exhilarating mixture of excitement, joy and fear. With each loop and launch of the track, my vision narrowed and my periphery blurred — a form of tunnel vision bad for drivers, dubbed the “Red Mist.” Luckily, I wasn’t driving. Instead I was the lucky passenger riding with Steve Feibus, a Lighthouse Point resident, senior Porsche Club national driving instructor, and member of the Gold Coast Porsche and BMW Owners Club (PBOC). The PBOC is an auto club that organizes events for new and advanced drivers to get experience driving their prized vehicles on professional racetracks. The club calls these events “Driver’s Education.” For new club members (or in my case, honorary members), the event begins with a classroom session, which teaches the basics of racetrack rules, flag colors, the drive line, passing and other

safety information. Following the classroom session, drivers are assigned an experienced instructor who accompanies them on the track and teaches them driving techniques, like when and how to accelerate, brake, turn, float or control the car. “Some of these things can be somewhat counterintuitive,” said Feibus. “For example, on the turns. A lot of new people will brake when they should accelerate. Pressing the gas pulls the car down to the track so it doesn’t spin out.” The PBOC hosts six similar “Driver’s Education” events at speedways throughout the year. The day I attended in March, the event was co-sponsored by the Porsche Club of America (PCA). Renting the track can get expensive, so co-sponsoring events with other auto clubs is a good way to network and be fiscally smart. The March event gathered 76 student drivers and 10 Super Solo drivers. Super Solo members are drivers who have gained enough experience, instruction and vetting to go on the track solo, which usually takes a year or two. “Until an instructor is convinced that you have acquired the skill set to be safe, then you can’t advance,” said Bob Schuster, who is the director of Super Solo for PBOC, and has been involved with similar auto clubs for 33 years. During these events, the use of the track alternates between student, Super Solo, racing and race qualifier rounds. The Super Solo rounds are generally at higher speeds and have less restrictions. For example, Super Solo drivers can pass a car on either side at will, while during the [CONTINUED ON PAGE 22]

student rounds, a driver must be given permission to pass on one side or the other by the preceding driver in the form of a hand signal. After advancing one’s skills as a Super Solo driver, club members then have the opportunity to go one step further and become an instructor themselves. “Not everybody becomes an instructor, but eventually you evolve,” said Schuster. Bob Varela, PBOC’s President, Competition Director, co-founder and co-owner, said passing on the skills and knowledge is part of the culture. “Somebody had to teach me, so I feel I owe it to teach someone else,” he said. Some skills, however, can’t be taught. “You need to be able to focus. You need an attention span. You need to almost have a sense, where you can see a shadow and be aware of it,” Varela said. Schuster agreed. “You have to be extremely intuitive,” he said. “You have to drive within the rules. You cannot defeat the laws of physics. You have to be what I call a ‘selfless driver’ — not overly courteous, and not discourteous. There’s a sweet spot that you have to hit.” Schuster said the biggest rookie mistake is that new drivers want to go too fast. “They have a 700 horsepower car and a 60mph brain and that doesn’t work,” he said. “New drivers will try and impress you with their speed, but that does not impress senior instructors. What impresses senior instructors is the ability to listen, take good direction, and execute as expected.”
The Evolution
Varela (who also owns Foreign Affairs Motorsports in Pompano Beach) has seen clubs and driver’s schools like the PBOC evolve over the years. Varela is one of the local pioneers of the club sport. He has been involved with racing since his teens. “I used to drag race in high school and college. I put myself through college drag racing,” Varela said. “I got into road racing in my early 20s in Europe, drove professionally for about a half a year, then started amateur racing and running some pro teams.” In 1978, Varela opened his own sports car business. “We thought, well, our customers would probably like to do this,” Varela said. “We worked on getting programs going and by the end of the 90s we had a performance driving school running here in South Florida.” Varela’s early driving school had only 40 members, including himself. “We each put $1,000 in because you have to pay for the tracks ahead of time. We were just racing and having fun. Some of the guys went on to do pro. We decided at that point that we needed to grow our own racers, so to speak,” Varela said. Now, the club has approximately 3,000 members, according to Varela. Not all the members race. The club hosts other, more social-oriented events. “We do drives where we’ll take 130 Porsches and we’ll drive to Key Largo for lunch,” Varela said. “In three weeks, we’re going with about 75 or 80 cars to Everglades City for stone crab. And then a group will stay overnight.” The club also does Auto Crossing, which is essentially an obstacle course that helps drivers hone technical skills at lower speed. “We have our own mini car shows with concoursing too, which judges cars on detailing, cleaning and originality,” said Varela. “When you get heavily involved in the club, and you’re passionate about the cars, you kind of start volunteering for a lot of stuff. You meet a lot of awesome people. You make a lot of new friends from all over the country and Canada. It’s fun. Pure fun.” As an honorary member for a day, I’d have to agree: Pure fun. I’d personally love to join the PBOC. Unfortunately, one must own the sports car first. But hey, a girl can dream, right? To learn more about the PBOC or get involved, visit PBOCFlorida.com.

Ringing in Hurricane Season DAWNE RICHARDS
SIGH. HOW DOES JUNE 1 ARRIVE SO FAST every year? Last year’s Hurricane Matthew preparation festivities were exhausting for several reasons: We’ve been lucky enough to have escaped any serious storm threat since moving to our current home in a small condo complex in February 2010. We had NO IDEA how to actually, you know, prepare our property, except to bring in the roughly 275 plants/pool deck furniture pieces/etc., each of which had the potential to become a deadly missile. Most of our neighbors are fairly recent Floridians, so they were of little help, except for providing copious amounts of yummy food and festive liquor, not to mention great company, during preparations. (Note: Don’t underestimate the importance of fun, and smart, neighbors during storm prep.) We’re just… older than we were last time this happened. Who enjoys the exhilarating task of nailing plywood/affixing shutters to the second floor? “That’s the LAST time!” became our battle cry, during both the prep and the post-non-storm unprepping. And yes, we know that we are very lucky to have done “all that” for nothing. If you’ve never been through a real hurricane, trust us: You’re WAY better off preparing for nothing than experiencing something. Nevertheless, there’s an undeniable sense of letdown (and sore muscles) post-threat. Given the work, our ages and our unwillingness to board up again, we resolved to have impact windows and doors installed before the 2017 season begins. All kidding aside, hurricane season is no joke. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, we have about 8,000 more residents in Pompano Beach now than in 2010 (a 7.8 percent increase), many of whom are likely hurricane novices. To all 8,000 of you, listen up: This is serious business! May 7-13 is Hurricane Preparedness Week, sponsored by the
24
National Weather Service. No matter how long you’ve lived here, there’s something for everyone on this site, which is full of preparedness guides, checklists, videos, the works. You can even attend a “Hurricane Preparedness Tour” in Miami, where you’ll get to see a “Hurricane Hunter” plane and meet the brave pilots who fly into the storms to get real live weather data. The City of Pompano Beach has its own great disaster preparedness site too, accessible here: pompanobeachfl.gov/ index.php/pages/fire_disaster_prep/disaster_prep. It’s got several useful links, one of which will guide you through a personalized preparedness plan. Note: “Arlene” will be the name of the first 2017 storm. Names of storms that caused substantial deaths or destruction are retired, including Joaquin, a Category 4 storm in 2015 that killed 34 people. Joaquin was the strongest hurricane to hit the Bahamas in October since 1866. As for our impact windows and doors, well, time flies! Here we are. As you read this, the permits are being pulled for the work. With any luck, we’ll be toasting the arrival of the season on June 1, smug and (more) secure.

The Florida Alps BY JAMES TERLIZZI
26
I RECENTLY LEARNED OF A GROUP CALLED THE “Highpointers Club” whose members’ mission in life is to climb the highest peak in every state. In Florida, that would be Britton Hill in Walton County. The “mountain” there stands 345 feet above sea level. I’ve had hives that were bigger than that. The Walton County seat is DeFuniak Springs. I tell you this because I find the name amusing. But, I digress. Highpointers actually travel to the middle of nowhere to climb this hillock, which takes all of five minutes. It takes two minutes to walk back down. Finding the place is the hardest part. It is 400 miles from the Expedition Everest ride at Walt Disney World. Most people who end up at Britton Hill are looking for a bathroom. Those tenacious enough to reach the summit are greeted by a local woman who keeps a guest book for the mountaineers. Climbers leave comments such as: “Wow, I can see all the way to the next field.” “I came back with all of my carabiners.” “Made it without oxygen.” The club recognizes the highest peaks as published by the U.S. Geological Survey. However, there is a rumor that near Britton Hill is a spot seven feet higher. And you thought Florida was flat. Mountain climbers must all be masochists. How else to explain spending big bucks and risking your life to get to the summit so you can take a selfie, then climb back down? Why not just buy the postcard?
While I grant that people have the right to pursue this dangerous hobby, I resent having to spend taxpayers’ money and risk innocent lives to save them when they get stuck on the mountainside. Those who are rescued should be punished. I suggest forcing them to live for a year in Death Valley, 282 feet below sea level. I have established a counterpart to the Highpointers, which I call the Otis Club. I chose the name Otis because that firm is the largest manufacturer of elevators in the world. The fact that the company was established in 1853 also gives it more panache. (Why they needed elevators in 1853 is beyond me.) Members are challenged to ride elevators to the top floor of the tallest building in every state. Sherpa guides are provided, but no climbing equipment is allowed, nor is bottled water permitted. Since this is a competition, points are awarded in categories such as: fastest time; fewest stops to reach the top; best music; most crowded; least body odor detected, etc. At the end of the year, points are tallied and various prizes are awarded. This year, first prize in the male category will be a one-year subscription to “Exterminators Quarterly.” First prize for the female winner is a date with Jim Carrey. Second prize is two dates with Jim Carrey. Come join the Otis Club and give new meaning to the term “getting high.”

Making Dreams Come True MARKETPLACE HOME MORTGAGE
When did you start this business? How did you start this business? I actually started my career in real estate while I was in college working on my degree in theatre. I took a part-time job at a title insurance company that my mother, Ellen, was the manager of. We opened Peoples Title of South Florida in 2003. Then, in 2009, I decided to make the switch to the mortgage industry to diversify. What was your inspiration? My mother and father. My mother Ellen is a brilliant, funny, determined business woman with an infectious smile. Everyone calls her “the Title Goddess,” but I call her “the Lion Tamer.” My mother and I are the ones who have worked together all of these years. My father was an extremely successful salesman in Philly for many years. His drive and relationship-building skills definitely affected me, and molded me professionally. What were you doing before running this business? Theatre. But to be honest, I still do both. I love making people’s dream of homeownership a reality with my day job. But with theatre, I get to make people laugh, cry, think and even tap their toes for a few hours. What makes you passionate about your business? Helping people. I love to be at the closing table, especially with a first-time homebuyer or an especially challenging loan. I tell my borrowers that I will be there to get them to the finish line. And that handshake or hug at closing is so gratifying. Mortgage financing is not easy in this day and age. And what I feel I offer is communication, determination and knowledge. I love my job! What is the most difficult part of running this business? When I can’t get them to the finish line. Whether it’s because something unexpected arises or there’s an issue with the home itself. I take this job very personally and it breaks my heart when I can’t help someone.
28
How many employees do you have? Right now, we have a team of two. But my plan for 2017 is to expand my team to three to five people. I have a fantastic marketing manager, John Murdock. The next step is to add more loan originators. The most important thing is to not just hire someone. We want to hire the right people. Culture and ethics are things you can’t teach. However, those are the most crucial things in my opinion. If anyone is looking, we are always interested in finding exceptional talent.
Sharyn Peoples
What else should people know about your business? At Marketplace Home Mortgage, we go over and above to make sure you are educated and prepared to purchase or refinance. We take the time to pick up the phone or meet in person to discuss the best options for you. With automation nowadays, the industry has gotten a little away from the personal touch. I feel that the personal touch is imperative and is why we are so successful. Do you have a mission statement? Our Marketplace Home Mortgage family is dedicated to true partnerships with our customers focused on continually creating innovative solutions that deliver extraordinary results and an unparalleled consumer experience. What are your hours of operation? I am in the office 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. However, I am available evenings and weekends by request.

You Wouldn’t Like Me When I’m Angry DEALING WITH ROAD RAGE
BY DR. JILL SELBACH A DRIVER ACCUSED ANOTHER OF DRIVING RECKLESSLY and nearly causing accidents. As he sat in his pickup at a stoplight, the accused got out of his car, walked up to his accuser and started pummeling him through the window. The driver backed up his vehicle as the assailant ran back to his car saying he was getting a gun and
would be back to kill the man, his girlfriend and their infant. Unfortunately, this is an all-too-familiar incident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 94 percent of all traffic accidents
30
are caused by driver error. Of those accidents, 33 percent could be attributed to illegal maneuvering or misjudging the intent of another driver, behaviors often associated with road rage. Road rage leads to injuries and even deaths. Data compiled by SafeMotorist.com indicates that 66 percent of recent traffic fatalities can be tied to aggressive driving. Of those fatalities, 37 percent were found to be caused by a firearm. In the past, males have had a much higher number of road rage incidents, but not anymore. Women are just as likely to drive aggressively and dangerously as men. More than half of all drivers have succumbed to a form of road rage at some point in their lives, one study cites. That is not saying they have shattered an offender’s windshield, threatened another driver with a gun or followed them home to threaten them, but have engaged in some form of rageful behavior. There are far more people on the road than ever before. This is especially true in Broward County. The days of “the snowbird season” are now long gone. There is no reprieve from the traffic once the end of April comes. Psychologists know of many studies that have come to the conclusion that crowding causes aggression. I think we have all observed the increased aggression in people in the grocery store, the cell phone store, parking lots, even school parking lots. However,
we may not be open to seeing this in ourselves. People seem far more protective of their space and what’s “fair.” Everyone is in a rush and is entitled to break the rules because their time is more valuable than that little old lady that should know better than to go to the grocery store at 6pm when we are rushing to get home. The individual with road rage may just be a violent person in all aspects of his or her life, not just with other drivers. Or they may not be able to control their emotions in the car when viewing all the ridiculous moves of idiotic drivers. Many times, drivers on the phone get into verbal altercations and their high emotions translate into low patience for other drivers. It is important to be aware of your own emotions and what is really pushing your buttons. Before you go looking at others, ask yourself if you are doing any of these things to provoke road rage: • Refusing to get out of the fast lane (this would be the far left lane) when the flow of traffic is faster than you are driving. • Braking as you approach a green light or riding the brake for no reason. • Not using your turn signals when making turns or changing lanes. • Refusing to let someone into your lane or merge into traffic. • Realizing you have missed a left-hand turn and crossing three lanes of traffic to get to the left lane, instead of turning right and backtracking. • Driving the same speed as the car next to you to prevent other cars from passing by. • Sliding into a parking place someone else has been waiting for.
A key factor to keeping your patience on the road is to always drive defensively. Give yourself plenty of time so you are not rushing and upset due to the slow mover in front of you. Remember what is important in life: your safety and the safety of your loved ones. Be a good role model for future drivers. No need to let kids think that losing control behind the wheel is OK. Play soothing music and use the time to unplug from phone calls, emails, etc. The Department of Motor Vehicles gives suggestions for decreasing your chances of becoming a victim of road rage. If a motorist is behaving in an aggressive manner toward you, disengage. If you see you have caused another driver to be upset, try to defuse the situation as soon as possible with a pleasant wave and allowing them room to get in front of you. You want them to pass by and go on their way. Call the police if you believe there is a real threat. Try not to take the person’s aggressive actions personally. It is very easy for angry drivers to depersonalize their victims. They are not seeing you as the mom driving her child to school. Pull off the main road away from traffic and let them pass you. Do not make prolonged eye contact. Do not return angry gestures. If someone is riding your bumper, get out of their way. Try your best to get away from an aggressive driver. Curtain Call Playhouse is proud to be the most active South Florida “touring” theater group for the past 20 years. Curtain Call has worked with over 3,500 artists, and more than 3,000 children in the arts. Appealing to both adult and family audiences, their mission is to bring the excitement of live theater to local communities with the goal of entertaining the seasoned theater-goer as well as inspiring a whole new generation of audiences.
Dance NOW! Miami
Julliard graduate Hannah Baumgarten founded Dance NOW! Miami with Diego Salterini, and through Dance NOW! has toured in the U.S., from New York to Arizona, and in Central America. Baumgarten has conducted residencies in South America, directed the Magnet High School Dance Program at Dillard Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale for 10 years, and currently serves as adjunct faculty at the Academy of Arts and Minds High School in Miami.
South Florida Chamber Ensemble
The South Florida Chamber Ensemble (SFCE), was formed in 2011 as a combination of the Art Trio and the New York Wind Trio and is comprised of six musicians from the brass, woodwind, string and percussion families. The two ensembles, who shared some of the same members, decided to join forces in order to diversify and pool resources. Their members perform throughout South Florida in orchestras like the Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, South Florida Philharmonic and Boca Raton Symphonia.

The Vision for the Cultural Center
While there is tremendous excitement about the opening of the Cultural Center, the vision for this type of venue was not part of the original proposal. Instead, it developed over time as the planning for the library moved forward. “The library had been planned for years,”
explained Mayor Lamar Fisher. “But the idea of adding the cultural center began to flourish when Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) was engaged as the Executive Director of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Their ideas to reinvent Old Town Pompano Beach placed strong emphasis on arts and culture venues.” Kim Briesemeister, co-founder of RMA, advised the City that cultural uses were very important to any redevelopment program. The library plan then quickly morphed into a larger vision to include a City cultural component on the second floor, as opposed to a traditional library. “We toured most of the Pompano Beach City Commissioners through the CRA/City-built library/ cultural center in downtown West Palm Beach as inspiration,” explained Briesemeister. “And from these tours the digital media center and other components were conceived.” From there, the CRA conducted a feasibility study for the site. After these studies, which determined the best-sized venue for the market, the team turned to the residents for input. “We received overwhelming response from our residents who had been thirsty for cultural arts,” explained Fisher. “They welcomed the development of live-work-play opportunities.”
For Mayor Fisher, his goals are straightforward: “My hope is that the center fills a niche that no one else can offer: providing educational opportunities with the media center; providing opportunities for new and upcoming artists to display their talents; offering a venue for weddings, private corporate events; and showcasing our all-around and well-rounded city as one of the finest in America.”
Michael McKeever
The Programming Entrusted with the managing and programming of the cultural center is the Cultural Arts Creatives (The Creatives), led by President and CEO Alyona Ushe. “When The Creatives team examined the cultural landscape, we determined that South Florida lacked a venue that focused on the vast regional talent in our own backyard,” explained Ushe. “No venue had dedicated itself as a home for the brilliant cultural organizations throughout the tri-county area. We felt that our mission

was to reach out to these groups and offer them a venue and an opportunity to develop in their respective genres, while also benefiting from the synergy of the other organizations and The Creatives’ guidance.” The Creatives issued a call for organizations and dozens applied. Through a juried selection process, eleven regional non-profit organizations were selected to become resident companies, otherwise known as the Cultural Alliance. The organizations that have been accepted as members of the Cultural Alliance, through the end of the 2018 season, include Arts Ballet Theatre, Brazilian Voices, Curtain Call Playhouse, Dance NOW! Miami, Florida Classical Ballet, Fushu Daiko, Outré Theatre Company, Rootz of Music, South Florida Chamber Ensemble, South Florida Jubilee Chorus and TheatreSouth. “This is an outstanding amalgamation of talent,” said Ushe. “Our vision for the Center is to feature the best-ofthe-best of South Florida performers and we are thrilled by the dazzling and diverse array of organizations that will form the foundation of our first season. “Each organization on their own is a dynamic artistic force and the Cultural Center will give them a grand showcase to display their talents. But that is only the beginning, as we strongly encourage our Cultural Alliance members to collaborate, explore and utilize each other’s expertise to create programming that’s second to none,” continued Ushe, who is also planning on commissioning a work that will feature all the Center’s Alliance members.

The Cultural Center is honored to have achieved an art world coup by securing the world premiere exhibit, “Shipwrecked of Reason: Half a Century in Cuban Art,” for its inaugural exhibition running through the end of July. On loan from the Cuban government, this exhibit is

curated by the internationally renowned Isabel María Pérez Pérez, and is presented in partnership with the Latin American Art Pavilion. Pérez Pérez is the Chief Curator Editora Ejecutiva del sello ArteCubano. She is at the forefront of the contemporary Cuban art movement, involved in projects such as the mega-exhibit Zona Franca (Free Zone), one of the collateral exhibitions of the 2015 edition of the Havana Biennial. Acclaimed as a global artistic force, curating exhibits worldwide, her views on contemporary Cuban art are revered in the artistic community and among collectors. During her visit to Pompano Beach, Pérez Pérez will present a host of workshops at various cultural institutions throughout the city. This is an opportunity not to be missed by art collectors and artists who want to hear from this leading authority. “Through an amazing collaboration with Latin American Art Pavilion, we are honored to host a visual art collection that pays homage to some of Cuba’s most influential visual arts innovators,” said Byron Swart, curator of the Cultural Center. “Ms. Pérez Pérez’s selection for “Shipwrecked of Reason” reflects a myriad of styles and influences that are truly representational of the island’s rich mélange of cultures.” From the multiple visions of 20 artists, the exhibit seeks to present a condensed multi-generational mapping of pivotal moments over the last 50 years in the plastic evolution of the island. This vision is marked by the consensus and the coexistence of these creative agents who have the most diverse artistic talents and perspectives. Each artwork deals specifically with themes such as memory, identity, body and portrait, territory and landscape, and the construction of history. The exhibit will highlight a collective of the following artists: Lidzie Alvisa, Nadal Antelmo, Abel Barroso, Roberto Fabelo, Roberto Diago, Humberto Díaz, José Manuel Fors, Aimée García, Alberto Lescay, Liudmila & Nelson (Nelson Ramírez de Arellano and Liudmila Velasco), Meira & Toirac (Meira Marrero and José Ángel Toirac), Rigoberto Mena, Manuel Mendive, Michel Mirabal, Ibrahim Miranda, Pedro Pablo Oliva, René Peña, Sandra Ramos, Eduardo Roca Salazar (Choco) and Lázaro Saavedra. the idea of change. “This is the first time these Cuban artists have ever shown together as a collective,” explained Maria Napoles, who founded the LAAP to address the local communities’ need to establish a platform where Latin American artists can collectively showcase their artwork. “We are honored that she created this exhibit for us and that she will be here to celebrate the opening of this splendid new cultural center.”
The Schedule
Working with the Alliance members to coordinate the programming schedule is Michael Tipton, the venue’s director. “It has been an exciting task,” said Tipton, who exhibits the skill of a great conductor. “With eleven resident companies there is a tremendous amount of logistics that need to be coordinated. Thankfully, the space is flexible, allowing for a variety of configurations.” The entire floor of the theatre space is sprung, allowing it to absorb shocks and have a softer feel, which makes dancing possible throughout. There is no set stage. Instead, staging blocks can be arranged to best suit each performance, and seating has several options, including retractable theatre-style seats for up to 400, or cabaret style with tables. Programming commences immediately at the center with a variety of enthralling performances. The South Florida Chamber Ensemble has the summer story series planned: three mini-concerts followed by a free workshop for children to create costume pieces from the story that inspired the concert. The Dance NOW! Miami (DNM) inaugural performance will feature the Joffrey Ballet’s “Lacrymosa,” as well as the critically acclaimed “House on Fire” and “Sogni,” from DNM’s artistic directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini. Florida Classical Ballet, under the guidance of worldrenowned ballet director Magaly Suarez, will showcase performances of “Majissimo” (choreography by Cubanborn Jorge Garcia, music by The Cid), “La Bayadere Suite” (choreography by Marius Petipa, music by Ludwig Minkus), and more from the classical repertoire. Outré Theatre Company brings one of the world’s first dystopian fictions, George Orwell’s “1984,” to the stage. The book that introduced the world to doublethink, Big Brother and thoughtcrime is haunting as it is disturbingly timely. This Andrew White adaptation brings to vivid life the world of Winston Smith and his struggles against the Party’s attempts to control every aspect of his life. “We have a spectacular summer planned,” said Ushe. “In addition to performances by our Cultural Alliance, we will be presenting concerts by leading jazz and blues artists, and offering summer camp [CONTINUED ON PAGE 116]

The purpose of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center has resonated with many business leaders in the community who embraced the concept and partnered with the center to sponsor the opening events. “The new cultural center is a game changer for the city, and we are honored to be the presenting sponsor for their Preview Party,” said Danny Salvatore, a partner in Fernbrook Florida, LLLP, the developer of Sabbia Beach, the first ultra-luxury oceanfront residential development in Pompano Beach in almost a decade, boasting a 30,000-squarefoot private beach. “Sabbia Beach is arising in the midst of a renaissance in Pompano Beach, which is transforming into a vibrant, sophisticated, multidimensional destination,” said Salvatore. “This next year will be an exciting one, and we look forward to having our future residents enjoy the benefits of world-class performances just minutes from their home.” Richard Rosser, publisher of Pompano! Magazine and presenting sponsor of the Preview Party agrees that the cultural center’s opening marks an important new phase in the redevelopment of the city. “I am creating this commemorative issue for the cultural center because I truly feel this is a landmark moment for the city,” explained Rosser. “This venue creates a strong sense of place for the residents, and having these diverse resident companies under one roof makes Pompano Beach the core of the regional cultural community.” “The City of Pompano Beach and its outstanding leadership have done an incredible job in creating a venue that will enhance the lives of so many people in this city and beyond,” said Mayor Fisher. “We are all thankful for their vision and we are excited to begin the process of touching lives, opening dialogues and growing our collective artistic spirit through this remarkable new venue.” For information on upcoming events and for tickets to the opening weekend celebration and season programming, please visit ccpompano.org or call 954-839-9578.

Shipwrecked of Reason Half a Century in Cuban Art The arts are what define a city’s identity; they give it that unique flavor. With the opening of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center on the horizon, Pompano Beach is about to embark on a journey to become a cultural arts destination. The venue itself is poised to serve as a beacon that will amplify the vibrancy of the city’s arts community. Innovative programing set forth by Cultural Arts Creatives (a dynamic creative team) will provide a rich diversity of theater, dance, musical performances and visual art exhibits. To kick-start the first season, the cultural center will showcase the world premiere exhibit “Shipwrecked of Reason: Half a Century in Cuban Art.” The exhibit is an impressive collection of 20 Cuban artists representing pivotal moments over the last 50 years of Cuba’s evolution. On loan from the Cuban government, this exhibit is curated by the internationallyrenowned Isabel María Pérez Pérez, and is presented in partnership with the Latin American Art Pavilion (LAAP). Pérez Pérez is the Director of Artecubano Editions and is at the forefront of the contemporary Cuban art movement. She has been involved in numerous important projects, including the mega-exhibit Zona Franca (Free Zone), one of the collateral exhibitions of the 2015 edition of the Havana Biennial. Acclaimed as a global artistic force, curating exhibits worldwide, her views on contemporary Cuban art are revered in the artistic community and among collectors.

Devoid of art supplies, internet or a connection to the international art market for many years, contemporary Cuban artists have been making some of the most innovative work the world has yet to see. The artists featured in Shipwrecked are acclaimed internationally for their far-reaching influence. Each has, in some way, shaped the contemporary art scene in Cuba over the past 50 years. Pérez Pérez has beautifully incorporated each of the artists’ visions to present a condensed, multi-generational mapping of pivotal moments over the plastic evolution of the island. Each artist has diverse artistic
talents and perspectives. The collection deals specifically with themes such as memory, identity, body and portrait, territory and landscape, and the construction of history. The collective dynamics of these artists and their work epitomize the idea of change. The collection will reveal the development of a distinct national identity and will serve as an illustrated narrative of Cuba’s colorful past and present. The collective works on display, which include painting, sculpture, crafts and mixed-media works, establish the artists as generators of senses, experiences and trends. Artist Highlights MARIA NAPOLES Maria A. Napoles is a Miami entrepreneur who has devoted her life to the arts. She was born in Cuba and left her family behind during the historical Peter Pan Flight era. Maria lived in Puerto Rico for 10 years and was part of the Executive Management Team at Volkswagen of Americas before moving to Miami in 1972. In 2008, Napoles launched Maria’s Enterprises of South Florida with a vision of offering emerging and established artists a platform to exhibit their artwork in a national and international forum. Napoles recognizes the need for emerging artists to be promoted, showcased and exhibited in major events. Napoles currently serves as an Honorary Member of Miami’s Arts & Entertainment Council for the City of Miami appointed by the Mayor. 2013 marks Napoles inaugural launch of both the Latin American Art Pavilion and the Maria’s Art Momentum Gallery at the Red Dot Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach. illustrator and sculptor, and one of the most revered contemporary artists from Cuba. He is perhaps best known for his captivating artworks that depict nude women with bird-like features, such as beaks and wings. However, Fabelo’s most recent, and even more impressive, body of work consists mostly of drawings, watercolor art, oils and installations that show the artist’s peculiar interest in the human condition. These works often depict distorted human and animal figures in portraits and fantastic scenery. The magical pieces explore the human psyche and its persistent struggle between good and evil. Fabelo has been awarded with numerous national and international awards. His art has been shown in more than 40 solo, and 500 group, shows worldwide, including some in Switzerland, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

MANUEL MENDIVE Manuel Mendive (born 1944) is one of the leading Afro-Cuban artists to emerge from the revolutionary period. He is considered by many to be the most important Cuban artist living today. He has received numerous awards for his art within exhibitions in Cuba and Europe. Since the beginning of his artistic career, Mendive has participated in many group and solo art exhibits. His first one-man show was held at the Center of Art in Havana in 1964. In 1968, he was awarded with the Adam Montparnasse prize for his painting exhibit at the Salon de Mai in Paris, and third prize at the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Havana. Additional noteworthy awards include the Alejo Carpentier Medal from the Consejo de Estado of the Republic of Cuba (1988) and the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the Minister of Culture and Francophony of the French Republic (1994). Today, his art resides in museums and galleries all over the world including Cuba, Russia, Somalia, Benin, Congo, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Jamaica and the United States. SANDRA RAMOS Ramos (born 1969) is a visual artist from Cuba known for her surrealist expression of her relationship to Cuba’s political and social situation. Ramos was born in Havana, Cuba where she still continues to live and work. Although Ramos doesn’t come from a family of artists, she was nonetheless still heavily inspired by painter Gloria González who was a close friend of Ramos’ grandmother. At age twelve, the young artist began to study art in Havana’s Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas. She continued her studies at the prestigious San Alejandro Art Academy and the Superior Institute of Art in Havana where she was instructed by notable artists such as José Bedia, Leandro Soto and Carlos Cárdenas, among others. NADAL ANTELMO (NADALITO) NADALITO, a professional photographer, was born in Cárdenas, Cuba in 1968. He is a renowned artist whose work has been recognized nationally and internationally. He has participated in many projects which have both collectively and individually earned numerous awards. His work is in the tradition of photography and the experimental Cuban art. His art is thought provoking, brings attention to society and highlights social injustice. OTHER ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBIT INCLUDE: Iván Capote, Ibrahim Miranda, Liudmila& Nelson (Nelson Ramírez de Arellano y Liudmila Velasco), Abel Barroso, Aimée García, René Peña, Humberto Díaz, Michel Mirabal, Eduardo Roca Salazar / Choco, Lázaro Saavedra, Rigoberto Mena, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Meira & Toirac (Meira Marrero y José Ángel Toirac), Mabel Poblet and Arianna Contino.
Pérez Pérez’s message through the collection is clear and concise. “Cuban artists are creating some of the most exhilarating and pioneering contemporary art in the world. They are a powerhouse sought after by many collectors and prominent museums. We are truly honored to present a world premiere showcasing artists of this stature at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, an amazing, state-of-the-art facility.” Maria Napoles, the founder of LAAP and an honorary member of the City of Miami Arts and Entertainment The art pictured may not be a part of the exhibit
Council appointed by the mayor, agreed that the cultural significance of Shipwrecked is profound. “The visual arts have long been one of the strongest parts of Cuba’s amazing cultural output. Cuban art is an exceptionally diverse cultural blend of African, South American, European and North American elements, reflecting the diverse demographic makeup of the island,” she said. “We are truly elated to have guest curator Pérez Pérez as part of this exhibit. Her name brings prestige to the project as she is considered to be a leading authority in contemporary Cuban art.”

Florida to Examine Whether Alternative Charter Schools Underreport Dropouts STATE OFFICIALS ARE FOLLOWING UP ON A PROPUBLICA REPORT LAST MONTH THAT ORLANDO USES ALTERNATIVE CHARTER SCHOOLS TO BOOST RATINGS AND HIDE DROPOUTS. BY HEATHER VOGELL PROPUBLICA
49
Florida’s Department of Education is expanding an inquiry into how schools classify students who leave without graduating, in response to a ProPublica report that the state may have thousands more dropouts than it acknowledges. Also in reaction to the ProPublica article, the school board chairman in Orlando is asking the district superintendent for a formal report regarding concerns that low-achieving students have been pressured to transfer from traditional to alternative high schools. It’s “one allegation we take very, very seriously,” chairman Bill Sublette said. “If that’s going on, that’s intolerable. ... That cannot happen.” Fifteen students at schools run by for-profit Accelerated Learning Solutions (ALS) in Orlando’s district said that, because of their academic performance, they had been denied admission to regular public high schools or told they had to transfer from them to alternative programs, according to our Feb. 21 article, which was co-published by USA Today. Some were pulled from class for surprise assemblies where ALS
wrote in an email. The state board of education will consider the matter at its March 22 meeting. Linda Stewart, a Democratic state senator representing part of Orlando, expressed dismay in a recent interview about the apparent underreporting of dropouts. “This little play of numbers, it needs to be stopped,” Stewart said. “They need to play by the same rule book that everybody else plays by.” She said she would ask the state Department of Education to look into the questions concerning data collection and see if lawmakers could help with a “corrective measure.” Last month, when ProPublica asked Orange County officials about traditional schools pressuring low-achieving students to transfer to alternative schools against their wishes, they denied it was happening. Once the article was published, though, people stepped forward to say the issue had been simmering within the district for years. At the school board meeting last week, and in comments to ProPublica afterwards, board member Christine Moore said a “handful” of Hispanic parents had
Now, understand, many students are not finding success in “traditional high schools, and they need a change of venue, but
we shouldn’t brag about the great success and progress we are making if all we did was get rid of our lowest students.
—Matthew Fitzpatrick, a former high school assistant principal in a blog post representatives gave a pitch to attend their schools. Several traditional schools improved their graduation rates by dispatching students unlikely to earn diplomas on time to ALS schools, the article reported. Enrollment in alternative schools in Orlando’s district, Orange County, has tripled in recent years, swelling to 3,900 in 2014. District officials say transfers for academic reasons are voluntary. ProPublica also found that these alternative schools could be significantly undercounting dropouts by coding students who leave as withdrawing to enter adult education, such as GED classes. State rules don’t label withdrawals for adult education as dropping out. ALS ran seven of the 10 high schools statewide with the most withdrawals to adult education in 2015, including the top five. Company officials couldn’t say where these students actually went — or if they took any GED classes. If all such withdrawals from ALS schools in Florida were counted as dropouts, the number of times that students quit statewide in 2015 would increase by at least 5 percent. Last week, Orange County’s school board voted unanimously to renew its contract with one ALS school, Sunshine High, which had the most withdrawals for adult education in the state in 2015. The state education department, which was already reviewing graduation-rate data, will broaden its examination in light of ProPublica’s findings, a department spokeswoman

complained a couple of years ago about pressure to transfer to alternative schools run by a for-profit company. Moore said she had ALS “investigated,” and told district staff to speak with personnel at traditional high schools to make sure they were not pressuring students to transfer. She said she would like to see a checklist developed for such counseling sessions, to make sure families understand all of their options. “My only concern is to make sure the parents and the students are counseled with all of the options and that they are given the choice,” Moore said. Moore said that the investigation she spurred had corrected the problems. “There were systems put in place to be sure that every child had the opportunity to go into the setting that best met their needs,” she said. “And so to me, this has already been answered and addressed and it had been taken care of.” A former middle school math teacher, Eric Schwalbach, said that former students of his who were struggling in high school told him they were encouraged to attend the charters. At the board meeting, he offered to provide the students’ names and suggested that members “go to Sunshine personally and say ‘Hey, how did you end up here? Did somebody encourage you to leave?’” He showed ProPublica copies of emails he sent to several school board members, Superintendent Barbara Jenkins and Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart last year that
accused Orange County schools of improving their state ratings by exiling low achievers to alternative schools. “We can no longer just move 2000 (sic) kids that OCPS failed to meet their needs out of our low income high schools to subpar charter schools ...,” he wrote in a May 20, 2016, email to Jenkins, “to make our school grades look better on paper.” And in a blog post last June that was emailed around last week, Matthew Fitzpatrick — a former district high school assistant principal — outlined how regular district schools could be improving test scores by pushing low achievers towards alternative schools like those ALS runs. “Now, understand, many students are not finding success in traditional high schools, and they need a change of venue,” Fitzpatrick’s blog post said, “but we shouldn’t brag about the great success and progress we are making if all we did was get rid of our lowest students.” Sublette, the board chairman, said he initially asked Jenkins to investigate students’ claims in the ProPublica article that school staff pressured them to leave. Jenkins responded that she had already investigated the concerns, Sublette said, and found them without merit. Still, he said, he asked Jenkins to detail at the next school board meeting what steps she took.
Orange County parents also expressed concerns about the alternative schools at the board meeting. “Children who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting need more help, not less,” said one, Heather Mellet. “The answer is not to push these high-risk children further into the shadows.” Mellet also asked Moore and a second board member, Pam Gould, to recuse themselves from the vote because they had accepted campaign donations from ALS. Moore has received $1,250 in contributions from ALS, its lobbying firm, and a lawyer who works for the firm. She said the donations didn’t influence her vote. “You go to a fundraiser and the lobbyist hands you checks,” she said. “We get contributions from lots of people.”
Gould has received $2,000 from the same sources. Gould said the contributions were transparent and did not constitute a conflict of interest under Florida law. The school board’s attorney said at the meeting that neither member needed to recuse herself. Sublette defended the quality of the ALS schools. “I’m proud of these schools and I’m not even hesitant about renewing this charter” with Sunshine, he said. District personnel have said that shifting students to alternative charter schools doesn’t burnish the district’s overall numbers. Students who leave without diplomas count against the district’s graduation rate, even if they aren’t considered dropouts. The district’s overall graduation rate was 81.3 percent in 2016. But that’s not the number district leaders use when boasting of Orange County’s academic prowess: Instead, they often prefer the higher graduation rate for traditional schools — which excludes charters like the ALS schools. Sublette and Jenkins touted that rate in last year’s state of the schools address, which is typically aimed at the business community as well as the general public. “[T]he accomplishment we’re proudest of, and the one our community, our teachers, our parents and our hard working students deserve all the credit for, is our graduation rate,” Sublette said during the May presentation. “Over the past 15 years the graduation rate at our 19 traditional high schools has risen from 49 percent to 90 percent today!” When Jenkins recently filmed a short video as one of four finalists to become the national Superintendent of the Year, she, too, cited only the traditional schools’ rate: “The graduation rate among our traditional high schools is at an all-time high, at 89.6 percent,” said Jenkins, who was named Florida’s superintendent of the year last November. Company representatives did not speak at the board meeting. “We are grateful for the School Boards support and recognition of our work and successes and remain committed to providing the highest quality of programming,” ALS President Angela Whitford-Narine said in an email. At the request of Sunshine’s principal, one graduate, Charles Jackson, addressed the school board. Jackson’s comments suggested that, as with the students in the ProPublica article, his departure from a traditional high school may not have been entirely voluntary. “It was the last chance for me,” he said. “I got moved on to this school, I got moved on to the next school, but I had to look within myself and have the support of special teachers and my mother and my family.” Jackson added that he felt welcome at Sunshine. “Just because my regular school didn’t want me,” he said, “Sunshine took me in.”

Papa’s Raw Bar. SUSHI • SEAFOOD Situated next door to their par-
ent restaurant Seafood World, Papa’s indeed seems like the hip child of an established restaurant. While the fresh food is the real star, the Keys-inspired décor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The restaurant serves a selection of clams and oysters on the half shell. There are options for cooked oysters including the black and blue version topped with blue cheese and bacon. The menu also goes way beyond typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. Papa’s also offers a wide array of sushi and sashimi. Start off with one of the towers of Van Buskirk (you’ll find a few menu items named after locals.) The bare naked lady version is a combination of spicy wahoo and tuna with tobiko and masago topped with spicy mayo and served with taro chips. They serve all your classic sushi rolls but the superstars are their specialty rolls. There are plenty of land lubber options including burgers and hibachi offerings. And to wash it all down, they have about a zillion craft beer options and a wine list too. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, seaweed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sirracha. For a taste of New England, the lobster roll can’t be beat— a generous portion of lobster with just the right amount of mayonnaise. Of course you can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what

the catch of the day is. The fish Reuben is another great sandwich option—just sub in some fresh fish for the pastrami and you’ve got yourself a little healthier version of the classic. Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN Sprechen sie Deutsch? You don’t
find many authentic German restaurants around town. So when you’re looking for a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel—it’s divine—a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautÊed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed—throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but
get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers—which, of course, is a great sign. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

Stop the Experiment OUR CHANGING WORLD CALLS FOR INTELLIGENT AND COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP BY RICHARD ROSSER
ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY experiments in history is called the Stanford Prison Experiment, and some say we Americans are living in one now. In 1971, pyschology professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo tested 18 Stanford University students with a game of prisoners and guards. The students were to spend two weeks in a makeshift prison, each with assigned roles of power and powerlessness. Zimbardo stopped the experiment after just six days. He had proved his theory. When the proper group dynamics are present and a set of rules legitimize specific abusive behaviors, “normal” or “good” individuals will abuse or bully other human beings. He called this phenomenon ‘social dominance behavior.’ The U.S. Senate just did away with the right to filibuster Supreme Court justice nominations, eliminating the need for broad consensus. How we arrived at this point is not my debate today. The fact that this historic rule was changed should cause each of us to reflect on where we are going. The civility of national and local elections has been declining for decades, each side blaming the other, rationalizing their latest attacks on who said, or
72
did, something first. I stress: Both sides are to blame, and both sides must confront the need to change. We live during a time of enormous human advancement. Innovation and discovery in the fields of healthcare, technology, energy, communications and education are nothing short of stunning. On windy, sunny days, the entire country of Denmark can run on renewable, free energy. Paraplegics are getting computers to operate their real, human legs so they can walk again. Diseases are being cured. And the pace of development seems to be accelerating. Yet leadership seems to be lagging behind, with abuse and bullying rampant. Why? I’m not a psychologist, but I can see the “power and powerlessness” dynamic prominent throughout our society. Haves and have-nots, black and white, gay and straight, men and women, north and south, and liberal and conservative — the friction is everywhere, with each side often claiming they are the ones without the power or are the ones with justified power, even if it harms others. Our leaders at every level should be like Dr. Zimbardo and stop the experiment. They should demand fairness, compassion and respect. They should exhibit the values of freedom, tolerance and civility. They should set the example, not lead the attacks from either side, which only escalates hostilities. We all vote for “our guy” to fight for us in Tallahassee, city hall or Washington, D.C. — to be our bully. We don’t need stronger bullies to fight. We need representatives to work together to find common ground. We need intelligent leadership: actual guardians of our way of life who are capable of finding solutions to enormously complex problems in a rapidly changing world.
