*A Vertical Rewards Elite Checking Account (the “Account”) is a variable interest rate account. During the first 3 statement cycles following account opening (the “Introductory Period”), the annual percentage yield (”APY”) for daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, may be a maximum of 2.00% APY, provided that a direct deposit via ACH has posted to the Account each statement cycle. If a direct deposit does not post to the Account during a statement cycle during the Introductory Period, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the base interest rate of .50% APY (“Base Interest Rate”) for that statement cycle, and the Account will still be eligible to earn rewards during the next cycle. After the Introductory Period, the APY on daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, in the Account may range from .50% APY to 2.00% APY depending upon (i) a direct deposit via ACH posting to the Account and (ii) the number of qualifying banking services (“Qualifying Services”) performed each statement cycle. If the direct deposit and/or the minimum number of Qualifying Services are not met during a statement cycle, all daily collected balances, up to and including $250,000, will earn the Base Interest Rate for that statement cycle. APYs stated herein are accurate as of 9/10/2018. APYs stated herein are established by BankUnited, N.A. (“BankUnited”) in its sole discretion and may change at any time. Balances greater than $250,000 are not eligible to, and will not, earn interest or rewards. Minimum opening deposit is $5,000. Transactions must post and settle to the Account during the applicable statement cycle. Banking services transactions may take one or more business days from the transaction date to post to the Account. A $20 monthly maintenance fee will be assessed if the average balance in the Account falls below $5,000 during a statement cycle. A $15 early closeout fee will be assessed if the Account is closed within 6 months of the account opening date. Fees may reduce earnings. Additional fees, terms and conditions apply. Please refer to our applicable product disclosures, Depositor’s Agreement and Schedule of Fees for additional information. CreativelySPEAKING

BY SUSAN ROSSER

The Labels We Wear WHEN I WAS A KID, ONE OF MY FRIENDS CASUALLY DECLARED SHE WAS LONG WAISTED. DESPITE THE FACT THAT I DID NOT KNOW WHAT long waisted meant, I quickly chimed in that I too was long waisted. Sure, I could be long waisted. Sounds good. Young girls aim to fit in. Back then, I loved liverwurst on rye with a slice of raw onion. On weekends, my dad would often prepare our favorite sandwich for lunch. But if one were to inquire in front of my friends if I enjoyed liverwurst, I would have turned my nose up in unison with my comrades. Apparently, liverwurst is not popular among the under 12 set. Over the years that followed, I came to learn what long waisted actually meant (this is way before Google) and reconciled myself to the fact that not only was I indeed not long waisted; but that my waist seemed to sit unnaturally close to my head. I was aghast. I was, of all things — short waisted. That just sounds bad. Short waisted. No one wants to be short anything. But then one day it dawned on me. If I was indeed short waisted, then it must stand to reason that I would possess stunningly long legs. I scrambled to the full length mirror only to discover my legs were not the long Barbie-doll-esque limbs I had envisioned. Now I was perplexed. I wondered, if I was not long waisted and I was not long legged — what was the deal with my body? Wherein did my height lie? Well, as it turns out, a good deal of my body’s length extends from my freakishly high waist to the tops of my less-than-stellar legs. This is such an odd shape it has yet to be named. I now know there are many labels for women’s bodies. Apple and pear come to mind, but there are others, and thankfully they don’t include any additional references to bulbous fruits. Sure, cognizance of body types may aid some women in selecting jeans, but the vast majority would likely be able to discern a pair of flattering pants without a comparison to produce.

14

While in my 20s and enjoying a day at the beach with a few girlfriends, the conversation turned to a mutual acquaintance who everyone unanimously agreed was “so sweet.” The discussion progressed into a session of naming many young women who were also “sweet.” By this point, the warmth of the sun had lulled me into a half-trance and I was not contributing to the list development. Finally, I bolted upright from my towel and declared, “I’m sweet.” My announcement received quite a laugh. My friends were quick to shed light on some of my better qualities; but they all agreed “sweet” was not among them. In truth, I knew this would be their reaction. I had been seeking a laugh all along. Because even though I was in my 20s by this point, I was still the class clown — a label I wore proudly throughout my school years. I have worn many labels. Some good, some not so good. For me, once I had that class clown label on my proverbial lapel it was self fulfilling. But as is so often the case, my clown label was accompanied with an underachiever stamp. “If only she would apply herself” was typically the theme of any teacher conference my parents attended. Let’s face it, we all wear labels: smart, goofy, silly, loud, shy, lazy, ambitious, outgoing, daring, rich, poor and anxious to name a few. Some we like better than others. For me, I’ve tried to hang onto that class clown label, while simultaneously dismantling the underachiever tag. And all these years later, I am pretty sure my love of liverwurst has contributed to what I now realize is my pear-shaped figure; although I identify as hourglass.

Pompano Beach Fishing Village Update

BurgerFi, a gourmet burger restaurant, and Kilwins, a chocolate, fudge and ice-cream shop, are expected to break ground in about two months, according to Tim Hernandez, a principal in Pompano Pier Associates, the firm that is developing the commercial space in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village next to the pier. Alvin’s Island, a beach goods megastore that will carry everything from fashion wear, to surfing performance gear and water sports equipment, is slated to start vertical construction in about a month. The developers of a five-story dual-branded Hilton hotel that will be built just south of the new Pier Parking Garage are expected to request a building permit from the city in roughly two months. Lucky Fish Beach Bar and Grill, which will be located just south of the pier, should be under construction by the end of the year. Oceanic, a two-story restaurant that is currently being built directly on the beach along the north side of the pier, and next to the newly opened Beach House restaurant, is anticipated to open by the end of March 2019, said Hernandez.

New Developments

A Walmart Neighborhood Market with a drive-through pharmacy is planned for the 6-acre site next to the RaceTrac gas station in Haven Plaza, located at the southwest corner of Federal Highway and Northeast 33rd Street. The developers have received site plan and building design approval from the city for the 42,232-squarefoot store, and are expected to request a building permit within the next few months, according to the Planning and Zoning Department. Construction could start within a year. The site is currently occupied by a vacant 28,879-square-foot retail building, which would be demolished. In the same vicinity, plans are underway to build an Outback Steakhouse on a parcel along Federal Highway, between Sample Road and Northeast 33rd Street, next to Shopper’s Haven. For years, a former Hops Restaurant stood vacant on the site, until it was torn down earlier this year. The 6,700-square-foot steakhouse still needs to be reviewed by the city’s Planning and Zoning Board and Architectural Appearance Committee before a building permit can be requested. An International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is slated to be built at Pompano Citi Centre, on what is now a grassy, vacant lot just east of the Wendy’s on the corner of Copans Road and Northeast 12th Terrace. Plans for the 4,600-square-foot restaurant are still going through the city’s review process.

Pompano Beach Launches “Where is My Inspector?” E-Service The city has just launched a new interactive online service – called “Where Is My Inspector?” – for residents and business owners who have scheduled a building, fire or landscape inspection and want to keep track of the inspector’s route and estimated arrival time. The new service is accessible through the “My Pompano” mobile app and the city’s website (pompanobeachfl.gov/ inspector). The new service is the result of the City’s first ever Civic Hackathon, held in April at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The day-long event was organized by the City’s IT Department, in collaboration with the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency and Code for Fort Lauderdale (an organization of computer programmers for the public good). The event brought together participants from around the area, including students from Blanche Ely High School and residents of Pompano Beach. Nine teams were challenged to tackle common issues related to permits, inspections and properties, and come up with solutions that would benefit residents. The winning idea was “Where is My Inspector?” Residents and business owners can enter a permit number to see a map pinpointing the building inspector’s route for the day, the places already visited, and an estimated time frame of when to expect the inspector at their location. On the inspector’s side, a route with the daily inspections will automatically be created using MapQuest. In the future, the service might also be used for engineering inspections, according to the City’s Chief Information Officer Gene Zamoski. The City plans to hold another Civic Hackathon next April, and to make it a yearly event, said Zamoski.

VOTE ON NOVEMBER 6TH

As candidate for district 3 commissioner I want you to know that I have heard your concerns about crime and safety in our neighborhoods, businesses and parks. There is no overnight fix to this problem. I am not going to be the guy that makes empty promises on ways to fix things. I want to be the elected official that hears you and works with you to make our city safe. Proactive policing along with business owners enforcing no panhandling on properties is a step in the direction needed to bring back safety in our city.

.I have come to see a very large divide in our community. Success within our city comes from working together. We are 5 districts that create 1 city and it is time to elect officials that want to work with the residents, other elected officials and the city staff to continue on a path of progress. It's time we put the people and progress of Pompano Beach first. If elected, I will work hard to make Pompano Beach the home where we all can live, work and play. 473 NE 1st Street Pompano Beach 33060

Gun Shows in Pompano THREATENED WITH LAWSUIT, CITY COMMISSION VOTES NOT TO BAN GUN SHOWS ON CITY PROPERTY

The City Commission was set to adopt an ordinance in July that would have banned gun shows at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center, but hit a road block when an attorney representing the promoter of the shows threatened to sue the City of Pompano Beach and the commissioners individually for violating Florida Statute 790.33, which prohibits local governments from passing any rules that regulate firearms or ammunition. Any public official who violates this statue can be removed from office by the governor, fined up to $5,000 and face a possible lawsuit, plus related costs. In addition, any local law regulating firearms or ammunition would be declared null and void. The proposed ordinance, which was an amendment to the city’s zoning code, was approved unanimously on first reading two weeks prior. As presented by City staff, it was intended to ensure that events and activities at City facilities are appropriate for families and residents of all ages. It would have prohibited the sale or display of merchandise or goods that, under state law, minors would not be allowed to see, possess or purchase, with the exception of special events where alcohol is sold lawfully to adults for consumption on the premises.

“If you move forward with this ordinance, then we’re going to sue you,” said Flasterstein. The Commission voted 4 to 2 against the ordinance, with Commissioners Barry Moss and Rex Hardin casting the ‘yes’ votes. At a commission meeting held less than two weeks after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14, Mayor Lamar Fisher said he and the city attorney were looking very closely at what could be done legally to stop gun shows at public facilities in Pompano. At Fisher’s request, Florida State Shows canceled a gun show that was scheduled to take place at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center in March. The promoter has about two more shows scheduled to take place under its current contract with the City. If the ordinance had passed, it would not have precluded gun shows from being held on private property. The shows used to be held at the Elks Lodge, before it closed last year. Flasterstein said he and his client perceived the ordinance to be a reaction to the Parkland shooting, and that his client and the law-abiding shouldn’t be “punished” because of the actions committed by a

“If you move forward with this ordinance, then we’re going to sue you.” — Attorney Noel Flasterstein The ordinance would have applied to events such as cigar, tobacco or liquor shows, as well as the gun shows held at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center. Attorney Noel Flasterstein — who has a Second Amendment and gun rights law practice in Boca Raton, and is a consulting attorney with the gun rights advocacy group Florida Carry — was representing Florida State Shows LLC, the gun show promoter, which does business as Florida Gun Expo. Flasterstein said that he and his client viewed the ordinance as an attempt to regulate the firearm industry in violation of Florida Statute 790.33.

“crazed person.” In March, Pompano Beach, along with a number of other cities, joined a lawsuit initiated by the City of Weston against the state of Florida that challenges the constitutionality of the provisions of Statute 790.33. After the ordinance failed to pass, City Attorney Mark Berman told the Commission he would continue to update them on the status of the lawsuit and, “hopefully, as that makes progress, this commission or further commissions will have the opportunity to do more without the threat of retribution.”

Pompano Beach Enacts New Vaping Rules

New Pompano Beach Call Center Creates Jobs for Local Workers SITEL GROUP, A GLOBAL CUSTOMER CARE PROVIDER, HAS JUST OPENED A NEW CONTACT CENTER IN POMPANO BEACH, BRINGING 400 FULL-TIME JOBS TO THE AREA. Sitel Group, a global customer care provider, has just opened a new contact center in Pompano Beach, bringing 400 full-time jobs to the area. Sitel expects to have all of the positions filled by mid-October, according to a spokesperson for the firm. So far, about a third of the new hires are residents of the Pompano Beach area who will fill both leadership and customer service roles. Sitel is recruiting in Pompano Beach and surrounding municipalities within a 25mile radius. Located at 2500 NW 19th St., the over 84,000-square-foot stateof-the-art facility supports customers of Costco Wholesale – one of the world’s largest retailers – assisting shoppers through the online ordering process. The starting salary for customer service representatives is $13 an hour; managers are paid a yearly salary in the $35,000 range. Employees are eligible for healthcare benefits (medical, dental, vision) after 60 days, paid time off after 90 days, and 401(k) retirement savings after one year. Sitel anticipates expanding its operations and employment opportunities at the site, which had its grand opening last month. The number of employees is expected to rise to 1,000 in the near future, the spokesperson said. Sitel set up a contact center in Pompano Beach in 2015 to assist customers of Capital One, the financial services company. Sitel closed the center about a year-and-a-half later, citing a loss of contracts as the reason. Sitel has been working with Dahlia Baker, workforce program director for the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, to place local workers at the new contact center. “We’re excited that Sitel is back and that they’re looking to hire Pompano Beach residents,” said Baker. Currently, Miami-based Sitel operates approximately 150 facilities in 25 countries, helping customers in North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific. For more information, contact Dahlia Baker at dahlia.baker@ copbfl.com.

The City Commission approved an ordinance in July that prohibits the use of nicotine vaporizers – commonly known as e-cigarettes or ‘vaping’ devices – in all public areas in the city, including parks, the beach, and other recreational areas. Vaping is also now banned in all places where tobacco smoking is prohibited under Florida law, which includes restaurants and all enclosed workplaces, but not private residences or stand-alone bars. Anyone who violates these rules is committing a civil infraction subject to a $100 fine for the first offense; $150 for the second offense; and $250 for the third offense and subsequent offenses. The new ordinance also prohibits the sale of nicotine vaporizers or liquid nicotine to anyone under the age of 18. To minimize accessibility to minors even further, it is unlawful for anyone to offer nicotine vaporizers or liquid nicotine in any type of selfservice vending machines in businesses. Violators of these rules face criminal penalties with a maximum fine of $500 and up to 60 days in jail. Local governments are preempted by the state from regulating the burning of tobacco products, but the city’s ordinance is not preempted because nicotine vaporizers do not burn tobacco. The ordinance applies to any electronic or batteryoperated device that allows the user to inhale the vapor of liquid nicotine or any other substance, including devices marketed and sold as an electronic cigarette, cigar, cigarillo, pipe or hookah. The ordinance was prompted by a resident who, during a City Commission meeting in May, expressed her concern about aerosol emissions from e-cigarettes, which the World Health Organization has deemed to be harmful to bystanders because they contain formaldehyde, metals and other toxic chemicals and carcinogens. The woman stated that over 19 localities in Florida have vaping regulations, and inquired why Pompano Beach hadn’t enacted any. Mayor Fisher thanked the speaker for bringing the matter to the Commission’s attention, and asked the city attorney to look into putting an ordinance together. All the commissioners were in favor of the move. Other cities in the area that have adopted ordinances to regulate vaping include Lighthouse Point, Boca Raton and Delray Beach.

Hardin Best Choice to Lead Pompano BY JEFF LEVINE The opinions expressed by columnists are solely their opinions and do not reflect the opinions of Pompano! magazine, Point Publishing or their affiliates.

WITH POMPANO BEACH MAYOR LAMAR FISHER OPTING TO RUN FOR BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION, THIS NOVEMBER, residents will be choosing a new mayor for the first time in over a decade. This important election will determine the direction Pompano Beach goes from here. The campaign has been tremendously tense and controversial. I reached out to the mayoral candidates and other prominent city leaders to get their take on this year’s election. Full transcripts of their replies will be posted online at pointpubs.com. This column summarizes my findings and perspective. REX HARDIN District three commissioner Rex Hardin has 12 years experience on the commission and has been well-positioned to understand the difficulties the City has faced to get Pompano Beach to where it is now. He will likely continue to lead the City on a path similar to the one laid out by current Mayor Lamar Fisher. Hardin told me he values Fisher’s “ability to gain consensus respectfully” and believes Fisher’s “level of stability has paid tremendous dividends to the community.” Hardin is big on consensus building. He is troubled by the tenor of this year’s campaign and says, “it’s unfortunate when local elections deteriorate to this level. We are neighbors and we will continue to see each other after Nov. 6.” MICHAEL SOBEL Some prominent Pompano Beach community leaders I spoke to (who asked to remain anonymous) said that Michael Sobel “looks to tear things apart but doesn’t offer solutions,” “is impossible to work with,” and believes that “nothing is good unless it was his idea.” These three statements sum up the sentiment I have heard since he joined the Commission and,

28

from my personal experiences with him, seem accurate. Sobel and I have emailed back and forth regarding city issues I have written about in the past. In March, I was working on a piece about major changes in the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). I sent him an e-mail seeking a response to some feedback I had received from a reader. In my reporting of the issue, a source inside city hall also told me Sobel had an interest in approving lower dollar expenses than the Commission normally approved. I wanted to confirm if this was accurate and wondered if perhaps Sobel was concerned there had been misappropriations. He responded: “Thank you for the opportunity but I do not ... broadcast my concerns and intentions in the press when I perform my duties as Commissioner, although I understand you are primarily a glossy advertising forum, rather than a factual information source. Also, please provide me with the name(s) of the person(s) that provided you with the content.” - Michael Sobel Sure, Sobel has the right to refuse to answer specific questions, but do we really want a mayor who will not discuss his “concerns and intentions in the press” relating to his positions and actions, especially one who makes “transparency” a central point of his campaign? His attitude toward the press also reminds me of tweets from a certain President. I’m not sure we want a mayor who would create an environment in Pompano Beach similar to what we have now in Washington. And, I don’t think we want a mayor who responds to legitimate questions with insults and defensiveness. Ask around, that seems to be Sobel’s style. Since receiving this reply from Sobel, he no longer communicates with me at all. In fact, he was the only mayoral candidate who did not respond to a simple questionnaire I sent out in regards to the election. Sobel also seems to have deleted me from his monthly commissioner’s newsletter >>>

<<< updates. Maybe it’s okay (not really) to delete a journalist, but I’m also a resident of District One, the district Sobel currently represents. He has an obligation to send me the same e-mail he would send to everyone else in the district. There are certain issues I agree with Sobel on. Yes, there have been times when the City has not provided enough transparency and accountability. I, too, worry that we properly balance the needs of developers with the needs of current residents in all areas of the city. And, I am especially concerned we haven’t adequately addressed the increase in traffic created by increased development. The next mayor will need to resolve these issues with an increased emphasis on quality of life for existing residents. Nonetheless, I believe Sobel’s demeanor disqualifies him for the job. Too many people I respect have red flagged (and I have witnessed firsthand) his inability to develop positive interactions — a key to good city leadership. He was largely responsible for efforts to chase away RMA, the company the City hired to oversee redevelopment projects, and I fear he will chase away others. CYNDY FLOYD & DEBRESIA LESANE Also running for mayor are Pompano Beach natives Cyndy Floyd and self-described “revolutionary” Debresia LeSane. Both candidates are passionate and rightfully troubled by the blight and poverty in the northwest part of the city. Hearing their concerns opened my eyes to a perspective I wasn’t fully aware of. LeSane has some extreme views (“the city only manages to sustain the rich and build tall buildings to hide the poor”), but her point of view is important to understand and consider. Floyd says she has “fresh ideas” and is a strong advocate for “affordable housing.” While both bring up good points, I don’t believe either has the government experience needed to be mayor of a 110,000 person city. Still, I sincerely hope they will remain community advocates and strong voices in our city. Bottom line, if you believe that the recent redevelopment in Pompano Beach has been mostly a good thing, Hardin is your man. If you think the redevelopment has been troublesome, then you have three other candidates to choose from. Two, however, lack governing experience, and the third seems to be more of a disruptive force than a problem solver. Bringing up problems without creating solutions, acting curmudgeonly and not worrying about building consensus doesn’t sound like a good description for mayor; it sounds like the job description of a magazine columnist. [ it dawned on me ]

Shoes, Flip-Flops and Old-School Pediatricians BY DAWNE RICHARDS WHEN I WAS A CHILD, WE HAD A SUMMER HOUSE IN WHAT WAS THEN A PRETTY SMALL, SORT OF BACKWOODS TOWN. AS BEFITS THE ERA AND THE location, the town had one doctor, an enigmatic figure with absolutely no bedside manner, but who made house calls. While he terrified most of the local children, parents revered him. As we grew up, we learned to revere him too. Dr. Dwulet was a fantastic doctor, a no-nonsense

physician with a firm belief in old-school remedies. Summer cold? “Put her outside!” he’d command my mother. High fever? “Put her outside!” As to whether this was sound medical advice, it probably was. Fresh air and sunshine – not to mention salt air – are excellent remedies for much of what ails us. I was lucky to have another incredible doctor as my regular pediatrician. Dr. Nobiletti was our “city doctor”; he practiced medicine for 60 years after serving in World War II as a highly decorated combat battalion surgeon, including on the beaches of Normandy.

32

Both doctors were clearly no-nonsense types, but what do they have to do with shoes, socks and flip-flops? Everything! At some point in my early childhood, we visited one of them about my flat feet. The advice? “She needs to go barefoot.” My mother was horrified, but dutifully followed “doctor’s orders.” Ever since then, I have loved going barefoot. If I could, I’d never wear shoes again, anywhere. One of the many things I love about living in South Florida is our flip-flop culture, as close to barefoot as one can be. And yes, I know that the modern consensus is that these are terrible for your feet, but I’m blithely ignoring that. My husband, however, is not a barefoot believer. Even though he’s lived most of his life in South Florida, he insists on wearing proper footwear before leaving the house for any purpose whatsoever. It drives me insane. Yes, I know, they’re his feet. But the reason it drives me insane is because everything – everything! – is a production, including the 25-step trip to the mailbox. I’m not sure what he expects to encounter on this paved walkway — rusty nails, poisonous insects, dangerous chemical spills? And forget walking the dog. Sometimes I’m surprised he doesn’t break out hiking boots. In my opinion (and my childhood doctors’ advice no doubt plays a large role in my worldview here), there are three South Florida events that warrant shoes and socks: 1. festive occasions 2. business meetings 3. our two days of winter. Sometimes I’d like a time machine so I could put the 10-year-old version of my husband in one of those doctors’ offices. Maybe they could talk some sense into him. But until I get one, I’ll have to live with his habit/ paranoia, and resign myself to the fact that if I want him to get the mail, well, it will take awhile. Otherwise, I’ll just slide into my flip-flops (in case of any actual hazards) and get it myself. Y

With Halloween approaching, one may want to schedule a costuming appointment at Costume World’s recently expanded warehouse, which Wick swears is home to celebrity ghosts. When I visited the new warehouse space in July, there was an air of chaos as workers unloaded moving vans, unpacked boxes and moved furniture, frantic to get everything in working order. Maneuvering around boxes, I followed Wick to the back warehouse where my jaw dropped wide open. The rows were seemingly endless, each stacked from floor-to-ceiling with multiple levels of hanging costumes. Some were bedazzled, colorful and sequined; others drab with earth tones, aged and antique. There were polka-dot 50s dresses, flappers, mobsters, showgirls, cowboys, geishas, civil war soldiers, round-table knights, paupers, hobos and everything in between. It was as if every character I have ever seen on stage or in film discarded their clothing in one gigantic, organized closet. I imagine that for costume designers, the experience of stepping into the Costume World warehouse is akin to that of a candy-loving child stepping into Charlie’s Chocolate Factory — awe, wonder and an instantaneous desire to play. I imagined what it would be like if “Night at the Museum” were to happen in that warehouse, the costumes suddenly springing to life. Oh the stories they would tell! In a certain regard, Wick said some of the costumes do have a voice — through the ghosts they brought with them. Wick and her daughter Kimberly swear the warehouse is home to several friendly ghosts, most likely of the actors and actresses who wore the costumes. Both Wick and Kimberly shared tales of paranormal phenomenon in the warehouse — taps on windows, multiple lights inexplicably turning on, strange cold breezes and distinct whispers in their ears. “Spirits are definitely here. There’s no doubt about it,” ” said Kimberly. “One thousand percent — they are here, but they are happy.” After swapping ghost stories, Wick shared the surprising tale of how Costume World grew from a craft project to an estimated $30 million collection.

IT STARTED WITH A SANTA SUIT

As a single mom of two young daughters, divorced at the young age of 22, Wick was required to be creative and resourceful. At Christmas, when the girls, Kelly and Kim, wanted to make some money to purchase a present for their indefatigable mom, Wick devised a plan to bake some holiday cookies the girls could sell at the Royal Palm Plaza. Wick’s English housekeeper at the time shared

fond memories of her own childhood, shopping in the holiday markets in England where people would sell their goods wearing Santa suits. While Wick liked the idea of costuming her girls to sell the cookies, she didn’t know where she could rent any Santa suits. “I opened up the yellow pages and there were no costume shops,” Wick recalled. “My housekeeper suggested we make them, so we went out and bought all the materials. She got me a sewing machine and we made the suits. It started with five Santa suits at my dining room table — just a little home project for my girls.” After creating them, Wick and her girls got the idea to rent the suits for $25 a piece. The Boca News came to take a picture and Wick published a one-line advertisement in the yellow pages. It was just the right time. “The phone rang off the wall,” Wick said. “People were calling up and saying ‘I need Big Bird. I need this. I need that.’” The Wick girls realized they had stumbled upon a great idea. “The more we got involved and did research, the more we loved it,” Wick said. “So we decided we would

go out to FAU and ask the costume department to come to lunch and I could host a little tea party for her. She came to the house. We told her what we wanted to do and she said, ‘Oh, that will never work!’” Wick set out to prove her wrong. “I said to the kids, we will go to New York and I’ll invest about $1,000 in you and we’ll have a little store, and for Halloween you girls can help me run it. We never knew we would be mobbed,” Wick remembered. “There was nothing around like that.” The first year Wick rented a small garage storefront, coincidentally, right across the street from where her current warehouse stands. Now Wick can look across the street and remember Costume World’s humble beginnings. Things were rough in the beginning. “I’d say ‘Kim, go sell a bunny nose so we can have lunch,’” Wick joked. “‘We’re not proud of it,” Kimberly added, “but everybody starts somewhere.” In the shop’s second year, The Wick girls moved to a larger space on Copans Road. Then Wick started buying up costume houses around the country. “From the 80s to the 90s I bought out ten large

costume houses,” said Wick, who would renovate the stores and re-brand them as Costume World shops. “We had a store in Buffalo, New York and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We had a store in Houston, and in Dallas, then Austin. We had a store in Boston. These were big costume facilities.” In the 80s, not feeling educated enough in the field, Wick took it upon herself to get mentored in the art of costume and set design from a Cuban designer in Miami who owned a costume house and crafted specialty work. “I went every day to Miami for a whole year,” Wick remembered. “Every day at 2 o’clock I’d drive down there. She trained me on everything — how to buy the fabric, what to do — hands-on training.” Together, Wick and her mentor created the entire wardrobe and set for “The King and I” from scratch.

BIDDING ON BROADWAY

In 2005, Wick bought out the largest costume house in New York City, which was founded is 1868. She moved 15 semi-loads of original Broadway costumes to Pompano Beach, making her, as mentioned in

37

the New York Times, the ‘largest authentic musical wardrobe collector in the country.’” Wick had only ten frantic days to pack up the costumes in New York and bring them home to Pompano Beach, where she stashed them in the warehouse. “A whole team of us packed it up and moved it. I’ve never been so dirty in my life. We had to scrub ourselves for days,” Wick said laughing. While Wick was thrilled she had won the New York bidding war, in the frenzy she didn’t quite comprehend what she had purchased. As she and Kimberly began unpacking the boxes, they were astonished by the Broadway gems they had acquired — Richard Burton’s armor with his name in it from “Camelot,” Rob Hudson’s jacket, Jimmy Garland’s hat, all the original “42nd Street” clothes, costumes from “Once Upon a Mattress” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” The collection was good enough to start a museum. So that’s exactly what Wick did. She transformed part of the warehouse space into a tourable museum with a dining area designed as an exact replica of Central Park’s iconic restaurant, Tavern on the Green. Guests would pay to see the costumes, have tea on the Green and perhaps see a live musical performance. In 2011, when the City of Pompano Beach told Wick she was no longer allowed to host visitors in the warehouse district due to zoning regulations, she knew she needed a new venue. At 69 years old, when most are dreaming of retirement and lazy afternoon naps escaping the Florida heat, Wick dreamed of costumes and theater. Her daughter Kelly, who in adulthood had established a career in real estate, suggested Wick explore the defunct Caldwell Theater in Boca Raton, which had gone bankrupt and was facing foreclosure. While Wick had no formal background in musical theater, she embraced the challenge. In 2013, Costume World leased the Caldwell, finally buying it in April 2016 for $5.2 million. The Caldwell, now called the Wick Theatre, houses Wick’s costume museum and theatre company. The museum collection has been featured on “The Today Show,” in People magazine and was the subject of a photo essay in Vogue magazine by fashion photographer, Bruce Weber. The theatre company, now is in its sixth year of production, has become an important cultural institution in Boca Raton. “To think,” she said, “It all started with a Santa suit.”

Meet the Chefs BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

Chef Troy Beasley

POMPANO BEACH HOUSE

The opening of the Pompano Beach House was quite possibly the most anticipated restaurant opening the city has seen in decades. Located in the planned Fisherman’s Village, the Beach House is one major part of the city’s plan to revitalize the beach. The restaurant opened in March and cost roughly $6.5 million to build. The company behind the Beach House is the Brimstone Restaurant Group (BRG), best known for their Brimstone Woodfire Grill restaurants in Pembroke Pines and Doral. BRG acquired a 45 year lease from the City of Pompano Beach to build the Beach House, which is a modern, twostory building on the sand. On the first floor, the main dining room offers a nearpanoramic view of the beach. On the second floor is a chic and trendy cocktail bar with giant, circular, tiered booths overlooking the ocean. The entire restaurant is modern, yet earthy and slightly rustic — reclaimed beach wood panels line some of the walls, old boat ropes dangle copper light fixtures with Edison bulbs, fishing nets and wooden boat oars are spotted throughout the design and an artistic grass wall hangs near the entrance. The decor gives honor to the restaurant’s seaside location. At the helm of the Beach House kitchen is Executive Chef Troy Beasley who has worked for BRG for seven years. Before joining BRG, Chef Beasley worked for Darden Restaurants at Seasons 52, and for Houston’s Restaurants for 16

years. As a Houston’s trainer for eleven of those 16, Beasley helped open Houston’s locations in DC, California, Arizona, Kansas, New York City, Texas and Florida. At each new restaurant, in each new city, Beasley said he soaked up fresh styles of cooking and learned better techniques for managing his kitchens. Traveling, he said, has made him more adaptable and creative. “I’m like a chameleon,” he said. Chef Beasley’s versatility aided him in co-creating the Beach House menu with BRG’s Director of Culinary, Rick Schwager, and BRG’s owners, JR, Jeff and Anders Anderson. The menu is one part Caribbean, one part Southern, one part steakhouse and a few parts seafood. Beasley’s New Orleans and Southern roots seem to be weaved into the menu at times, with elements like Creole sauce, white cheddar grits, buttermilk chicken, andouille sausage and dirty rice. Caribbean flavors are spotted with ingredients like pineapple, grilled mango and crispy plantains. The ocean is well-represented with sushi, raw oysters and fresh fish; while land is honored with juicy steaks. The Anderson family’s >>>

<<< extensive world travel experience aided the BRG team in crafting a globally-influenced menu. Some of Chef Beasley’s favorite entrées are the “Drunken Rib Eye” (a ribeye steak with Hawaiian marinade topped with pineapple salsa and served with Parmesan potatoes), the “Walk the Cedar Plank Salmon” (cooked on a cedar plank and topped with whole-grain mustard butter), the baconwrapped scallops (served with dirty rice and a tequila lime cream sauce) and the “Beachy Shrimp and Grits” (jumbo white shrimp served with stone-ground white cheddar grits served in a light, Creole sauce with ham, asparagus and corn salsa). The most Creole-inspired of the dishes — the shrimp and grits — is surprisingly not Chef Beasley’s creation, but Schwager’s recipe. Still, it is one of Beasley’s favorites. “It’s a great recipe. It’s really tasty and has a lot of flavor profiles,” he said. “Flavor is what I’m all about. I’m not that chef that stays on one plate for ten minutes to make it really pretty and fancy. I concentrate on the taste. I just want food to taste really, really good.” EVENTS AT Beasley said this desire — to POMPANO BEACH bring a depth of flavor to every HOUSE: dish — comes from his soulful The Pompano Beach House grandmother. As a child, regularly hosts yoga classes, growing up in New Orleans, rooftop parties and other fun Beasley helped his grandmother events. A full schedule can be cook. She earned her living found on the Beach House running a prepared meal business facebook page. from her home, cooking up huge pots of food to provide meals for local churches, schools, barber shops, neighborhoods and beauty

salons. Beasley remembers his childhood with her well. “I used to stand on little milk crates because I wasn’t tall enough and would watch her cook,” Beasley said. “She baked. She did a lot of pot cooking. She fried. What was really unique for my grandmother was she didn’t really measure anything. I used to see her put her hands in and take seasonings and flours and just throw stuff in.” Beasley’s experience with his grandmother pushed him to pursue work in kitchens young. He started as a bus boy at 14 years old and in just a few years worked his way up to a line supervisor position at Copelan’s Restaurant on St. Charles St. While Beasley received no formal culinary education (he earned degrees in computers and business administration), he worked in restaurants throughout his schooling and, luckily for Pompano Beach, never left the kitchen. Beasley has high hopes for the Beach House’s future. “We started out here with a bang,” he said. “I hope we continue that trend.” The Pompano Beach House is located at 270 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. For more information visit beachhousepompano.com or call 954-607-6530.

Chef “Pasquale”

TRATTORIA NOVELLO Tucked in the center of the east Atlantic Blvd. plaza between the Foundry and Café Maxx, Trattoria Novello is poised to be a central part of Pompano Beach’s seaside re-birth. At the heart of Trattoria Novello is Chef Patrick Solarino — or Chef “Pasquale” as he goes by (a name derived from his grandfather). Chef Pasquale’s fervent belief in using fresh ingredients (so fresh some are grown in his own home garden) and authentic Italian imported products is truly what sets Trattoria Novello apart from the roughly two dozen other Italian restaurants in Pompano Beach. Chef Pasquale grew up in Montreal, Canada in an Italian family whose connection, heart and soul was built in the kitchen. “My grandmother and my grandfather were always in the kitchen doing something,” Chef Pasquale said. “My grandfather was always the farmer — he would get tomatoes and fresh cow’s milk. We’d go foraging for wild mushrooms. And always at home, my grandmother was making fresh pastas, cookies and food. “My grandparents were poor, but always used fresh ingredients, hand-picked from the garden. The backyard had no grass — it was all garden and trees. We used to have hundreds of rows of tomato plants and celery and carrots — you name it, and we had it in the garden.” Chef Pasquale has carried this spirit with him. He imports products like olive oil, pistachio cream, cheeses, pastas and even water from Italy. He makes his own gnocchi, ravioli, bucatini and occasionally spaghetti, and butchers his own meats. His limoncello tiramisu, panna cotta and pistachio cannoli are homemade. Some of Trattoria Novello’s dishes are derived from Chef Pasquale’s own childhood. While his family is from Southern Italy and much of the Trattoria Novello menu reflects that heritage, Chef Pasquale has intentionally crafted a menu with dishes from all regions of Italy. “A lot of restaurants in the area focus on their main region where they are from, and I don’t like that. There’s

more to work with,” he said. “I want to say this respectfully — I’m not an American Italian restaurant — you won’t find garlic rolls or fettuccine Alfredo here. It’s mostly traditional dishes — really traditional Italian dishes, sourced from Italy.” Some of the dishes, he said, Italians are not even familiar with. “A lot of the food I do is not known in Italy. It’s considered peasant food. Whatever you had that day, you put together and you make,” he said. The emphasis is on quality, freshness and oftentimes simplicity. Chef Pasquale said his top-selling dish is his branzino, which is simply grilled with the skin on. “People go crazy for it,” he said. “I also have items on my menu that Americans are not familiar with. Once they try them here in my restaurant, I open up their mind.” These ingredients include tripe and some wild TOP zuppa di cozze in game meats, such as rabbit and wild boar. vino bianco — mussells in Beyond the food, Chef Pasquale and his white wine sauce ABOVE orecchiette Pugliesi wife, Kim Kahn, (who can be seen welcoming — broccoli rabe, Italian guests in the front of the house on the sausage, garlic, pepper flakes, olive oil, Romano weekends and does the restaurant’s social cheese, white wine media and photography) have attempted to LEFT limoncello tiramisu — a create an atmosphere every bit as welcoming lemon twist on the classic. The Talerico Family CASA CALABRIA Calabria is a majestic, old-world city at the extreme southern tip of Italy — at the toe of the boot into the Mediterranean. Calabria is internationally known for its salumeria’s and fine aged deli meats, such as soppressata, hard sausage and prosciutto, as well as many fresh and hard cheeses. Calabrian cooking strikes a harmonious balance between meat-based dishes, fish, herbs and rustic vegetables, such as eggplant. The Talerico brothers and sisters behind Casa Calabria — an oceanside Italian restaurant located in the Ocean Manor Resort in Fort Lauderdale — were all born in Calabria. Their father “Papalo” was a land owner, shepherd and goat herder. His occupation was making fresh ricotta and mozzarella LIVE MUSIC AT cheese for most of the village. family jarred their own tomato sauce, made fresh pasta and harvested vegetables from “Papalo’s” gardens. Every Sunday, the home’s dining tables were lined with Mamma’s fresh baked bread and pastries. Food was synonymous with family. The Talerico’s rich heritage is showcased in both Casa Calabria’s atmosphere and menu. The dining room pays homage to the family’s rustic home — exposed bricks, candle chandeliers and a wood-paneled ceiling lead to windows that frame a beautiful view of the ocean. A red piano sits on the edge of the dining room where live music is played. Old photos of the Talerico parents and Calabrian villages adorn the walls. And the menu is primarily derived from Talerico family recipes. Casa Calabria imports many of their ingredients directly from Calabria. Starting with the anipasto plate with speck, pecorino and Gorgonzola, served with a wedge of cantaloupe, grapes and caramelized onion, is a great way to transport one’s palate to Southern Italy. Sipping an earthy red wine while dipping crusty bread into extra virgin olive oil is equally soul satisfying. Lobster ravioli, linguine ai frutti di mare, the Branzio Del Mediterraneo or grilled octopus are great choices for sea lovers, while filet mignon and the veal chops cater to the more meat-oriented diner. Chef CAFÉ Oliver Saucy MAXX It has probably been said before, but celebrity Chef Oliver Saucy has the perfect name. His culinary creations are absolutely “saucy” — they’re creative, colorful, multicultural and have an emphasis on local seafood and produce. Whether it’s Atlantic hogfish snapper, fruits and citruses from the tropics, Creole spices from New Orleans, zesty Cuban herbs or chilies from Mexico, Chef Saucy draws inspiration from South Florida’s surrounding cultures. By letting ingredients drive the plate, Chef Saucy keeps things fresh for both his guests and himself. His creativity though, he said, can never be overshadowed by proper technique. “At the end of the day, if you can’t put it all together with the French and Mediterranean roots I grew up studying, it just doesn’t work,” said Saucy. “One culture, one plate. We don’t want to get too confusing or it takes your red wine drinker right off the table. That’s the bread and butter for us – the red wine drinker.” This blend of classic technique and innovative ideas is what Chef Saucy and Café Maxx is known for. It has made Café Maxx a Pompano Beach culinary destination for almost three decades. Saucy has been at the helm for almost as long. In 1988, Saucy co-purchased Café Maxx with the restaurant’s general manager Darrel Broek. The dynamic

duo has run the restaurant ever since. Broek’s hospitable charm welcomes guests in the front of the house, while Saucy’s creations make them salivate at the table. To keep the menu balanced, Chef Saucy breaks it down into thirds: one third is classic, so regulars know what to expect; another third is standard proteins prepared with seasonal ingredients; and the last is where Chef Saucy gets to be creative. “The other third is whatever exciting thing we can get our hands on — whatever we feel like doing,” said Saucy. “We try to get the best available ingredients all the time.” ABOVE LEFT Chef Oliver Saucy teaches a cooking class Café Maxx.

Perhaps it runs thick in his blood; He learned his first fundamental cooking techniques watching his father in action as the Executive Chef in a resort kitchen nestled in the back of a medieval German Castle in the Black Forest region of New York. “I grew up eating all kinds of crazy stuff. It would be like, ‘oh what did you have for dinner?’ ‘Oh, we had calves brains’,” said Saucy laughing. As a young adult, Saucy studied at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park where his father also taught for 28 years. Saucy’s son worked in the Café Maxx kitchen for two years and has also studied at CIA. Saucy has passed on his skills to non-relatives, too. For the 20th Anniversary of Café Maxx, 26 of Saucy’s protégés, who now run kitchens all over the country, came to congratulate him and thank him for his mentorship. For over 20 years Saucy has also been teaching cooking courses at Café Maxx during the summer months when the restaurant slows. “The biggest class we had was 99 people. Holy moly,” said Saucy. At the end of Saucy’s classes — which include topics like grilling meats, cooking lobster, or Mediterranean technique — Saucy serves a four to five course dinner, plus dessert with the recipes he taught. “The classes bring a lot of energy in here. It’s a lot of fun,” said Saucy. “It’s relationship building.” So what’s next for Chef Saucy and Café Maxx? “You know I think it’s just to keep the focus on making quality food,” said Saucy. “That never goes out of style.” Café Maxx is located at 2601 E. DiningOUT Table 2201. MEDITERRANEAN • SEAFOOD Everything at Table

2201 is made on the premises — even the desserts. Start with the pygros, a tower of eggplant, potatoes and ground beef topped with a cool yogurt sauce. Finish off with the Greek yogurt mousse, a lightly sweetened cloud with a hint of cocoa and a strawberry sauce to compliment. Table 2201 has a menu full of your Greek favorites without all of the hooplah. So if you are looking for a genuine Greek dinner without having to dance on tables and yell “opa” — not that there’s anything wrong with that — Table 2201 is a good choice. 2201 E. Central to the dining room is a large classic sushi bar, displaying the fresh fish offerings. But sushi is only part of their menu. Yakuza has a brilliant selection of Japanese and Thai specialties. We were impressed by the freshness and variety of tastes offered. Lighthouse Point Marina, the Nauti Dawg is a local favorite. Start with the tuna wontons—crispy fried wonton wrappers topped with tuna tartare, seaweed salad, red pepper mayo, wasabi and a hit of sirracha. For a taste of New England with a twist, try the lobster roll. Of course you can’t go wrong with the fresh fish sandwich—ask what the catch of the day is. The fish Reuben is another great sandwich option—just sub in some fresh fish for the pastrami and you’ve got yourself a little healthier version of the classic. All sandwiches come with a side and while French fries are always a delicious option—the restaurant offers a tangy cucumber salad (among other choices) that provides a nice crunch to any sandwich. While the fresh food is the real star, the Keys-inspired décor certainly accounts for part of their charm. The menu goes way beyond typical raw bar offerings with inventive tacos and sliders. Papa’s also offers a wide array of sushi and sashimi. Start off with one of the towers of Van Buskirk (you’ll find a few menu items named after locals.)
