YOU CAN BE BOLD, LIKE PHILANTHROPISTS TIMOTHY AND JONATHAN ALLEN
Partnering with the Community Foundation of Broward helps brothers Timothy and Jonathan Allen carry on their family’s trailblazing legacy. Their father, W. George Allen, became the first Black student to graduate with a law degree from the University of Florida and he led the legal fight that desegregated Broward public schools. By creating three scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, Timothy and Jonathan empower new generations of students to achieve success. For Timothy, “It’s about lifting people up, making a real difference and encouraging others to do the same.” Jonathan says, “With endowed scholarship funds at the Community Foundation, our family’s impact never ends.”

CREATIVELY SPEAKING
Goodbye Girls Not every friendship is destined to last a lifetime — and that’s OK BY SUSAN ROSSER
T
he other day, as I hung up the phone with my good friend Robin, I was reminded of the era of expensive long-distance phone calls and the strength of a friendship forged at summer camp. As a kid, Robin was my closest confidante — a fellow camper and kindred spirit. During the winter months, we were separated by the vast expanse between Long Island and New Jersey. Despite our parents spending a small fortune for us to spend our summers in the idyllic Poconos, they deemed long-distance calls a luxury. Constrained by this limitation, our winter communication was relegated to letter writing and our annual ritual of birthday calls. Though infrequent, those precious moments on the phone (there was a strict 10-minute limit) built the foundation of a friendship that would endure for decades. Our highly practical, albeit cheap, parents inadvertently contributed to the rarity of our conversations, making each call a cherished occasion. The music of friendship often changes over the years, evolving like a playlist. Some tunes are unforgettable — reminiscent of a catchy classic. At the same time, others fade away, like a hit song whose melody seems to linger in some recess of your memory that is just beyond your reach. A dear friend, who was once a significant part of my life, moved away a few years ago. The physical distance between us has naturally led to a gradual drifting apart. Despite my attempts to stay connected, it’s a somewhat bittersweet acknowledgment that life has taken us on separate paths. While I sense a shift in our connection, I can’t help but feel as if I should do more to stay in touch. I’m unsure how to manage the changing dynamics of a friendship that once felt unbreakable — except to be grateful for what was. She came into my life like fireworks — bright, bold, and fun — we were instant friends. And while this particular friendship
has faded a bit, I’ve been fortunate to find other friends who are more like a trusty flashlight with batteries that inexplicably last forever — always ready when needed. Robin, my childhood friend, falls into the latter category. We now live just 15 minutes away from each other. Our visits may not be as frequent as they could be, but knowing she’s nearby is oddly reassuring. On my iPhone favorites list, there’s a particular spot that I invariably end up accidentally dialing. My mother-in-law occupied that spot a few years back, leading to unintentional calls where I had to fake interest in conversation. I confided in Robin about this dilemma and decided to designate her for that spot. Consequently, I now find myself dialing her inadvertently so frequently that she comically answers my calls with the phrase, “butt dial?” Whether my call is intentional or not, I am always happy to talk to her, and she always answers. In the grand story of all friendships, each person is a chapter contributing to the overarching narrative of our lives. And for me, while some chapters may not last as long as I had hoped, plenty were page-turners full of fantastic memories. What I’ve learned is that it is natural for friendships to ebb and flow. For now, I’ll remind myself to cherish the constancy of some relationships and concede that the impermanence of others is perfectly natural. After all, dazzling fireworks and trusty flashlights are both pretty amazing. Y

Mayor Swears in Jack Vaccaro as New Lighthouse Point Police Chief Jack Vaccaro has officially been pinned and sworn in by Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk and the Lighthouse Point City Commission as the City’s eighth Police Chief. On Jan. 9, a crowd of uniformed police officers, Vaccaro’s two daughters and wife, gathered at the City Commission meeting and Zoom to watch Vaccaro as he graciously accepted the promotion. For roughly the past eight months, Vacarro has been serving as the Acting Police Chief after former chief Ross Licata moved to the position of city administrator following the passing of longtime
42
city administrator John Lavisky. Vaccaro began his law enforcement career with the Lighthouse Point Police Department more than three decades ago, in 1992. During his career, he served as a patrol officer, marine patrol officer, community policing officer, patrol sergeant, training sergeant, and lieutenant. He holds a B.S. in criminal justice administration from Columbia Southern University and is a graduate of the 249th session of the FBI National Academy and the Center for Advanced Criminal Justice Executive Leadership Program, and is an associate member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association. “We have an all-star team at the police department. We really do,” said Vacarro after he was

sworn in. “We talk about all of our successes and how well we’ve done — it’s because of all our men and women, our officers and dispatchers, our support services. They make me look good. They made Ross look good. I couldn’t be more excited to be able to continue to work alongside each of them.” In the past 46 years, there have only been four city police chiefs. John Knox Village Participates in Stanford Study on the Use of Virtual Reality in Aging Populations BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
John Knox Village recently aided research conducted by Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) to study the use of Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance relationships between the aging population and their caregivers. The study focused on the psychological and behavioral effects of virtual reality by surveying 245 older adults and 39 caregivers in 16 Senior Care communities. The study was done in collaboration with Mynd, a provider of immersive therapeutic experiences for seniors, and AT&T 5G Healthcare. It was the largest study ever conducted on VR and older adults and sought to understand attitudes towards new technologies and how professional caregivers felt about facilitating VR experiences. Research was led by Dr. Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of the VHIL and Ryan Christopher Moore, Ph.D. researcher. “This study showcases how a tool which is typically associated with youthful entertainment has transformative applications in healthcare, particularly geriatric care,” said Dr. Bailenson. “The response from both the caregivers and seniors has been quite positive, suggesting that VR can be a sustainable and beneficial tool in
Senior Care communities.” Key findings included that 81.5 percent of caregivers enjoyed interacting with residents more while using Mynd Immersive (Mynd) than while doing other activities, and 94.9% said that using Mynd was moderately to extremely beneficial to their relationship with the resident. Similarly, 83 percent of residents reported that using Mynd was moderately to extremely beneficial to their relationship with the caregiving staff. “Shared experiences in VR, like revisiting a senior’s hometown or traveling to a place they’ve always wanted to see, can stimulate greater communication, bridge emotional gaps, and create deeper bonds,” said Chris Brickler, CEO of Mynd Immersive. “We are experiencing explosive growth of our aging population, while simultaneously seeing a significant decline in available caregivers, so it’s imperative that we create tools like Mynd that
can help create a more enjoyable and fulfilling environment for both the cared and caregiver.” While positive attitudes towards new technology often decline with age, the study population overwhelmingly felt positive about using VR. “We’re entering a new era of delivering immersive, digital therapeutics,” said Joe Drygas, Head of AT&T Healthcare. “The combination of XR experiences with 5G and AI will have a tremendous impact on the many ways we can provide top quality care for our elders and support their caregivers.” How the study will impact seniors or caregivers at John Knox Village is to be determined, but the community’s participation in the study expresses an openness to emerging technologies. John Knox Village is one of South Florida’s largest Life Plan Communities with both independent and assisted living options for seniors. To learn more about John Knox Village, visit johnknoxvillage. Broward Health Has Filed Plans for a Freestanding Emergency Department in Lighthouse Point BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
On Dec. 13, the City of Lighthouse Point’s Development Review Committee reviewed plans to transform a 1.03-acre site on Federal Highway, north of the Walmart (at 5360 N. Federal Highway), into a Broward Health freestanding emergency department (ED). As reported by the South Florida Business Journal, Broward Health acquired the property for $4.95 million and intends to demolish the 15,742-square-foot office building currently there.
44
If approved, Broward Health will redevelop the site into a two-story, 14,074-square-foot facility with 9,417 square feet for the freestanding ED, 4,757 square feet of medical office and 36 parking spaces. It would include 10 treatment rooms and a CT scanner. It will not keep any patients overnight. “While we work toward city approval, Broward Health is pursuing an expansion of its footprint to Lighthouse Point,” Broward Health President and CEO Shane Strum
pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT
said. “It is always our goal to not only provide the highest quality care to our community, but also convenient access to that care. The new freestanding emergency department, like the one being built in Sunrise, is the latest step in fulfilling that mission.” Broward Health broke ground on a freestanding ED in Sunrise in October. Freestanding emergency departments are a way for Broward Health to reach more patients who don’t live near a hospital. Y

New Habits — New You BY CRAIG HALEY
A
s we delve further into 2024, it’s natural to take a moment to reflect on the New Year’s resolutions we made just about a month ago. Most people set resolutions to lose weight, make more money, exercise, save, improve relationships with family and friends, etc. The sad part about New Year’s resolutions is that only 9% of people follow through and achieve their goals. So, what is the secret to changing old or bad habits and creating new, more productive routines?
The first part is deciding to change and improve your life. Clarity is power! You must visualize your goals and why they are essential. Having the “what” is great, but when you have a strong “why,” magic happens. The “why” will make you take action when you don’t feel like it. Now that you have some strong reasons why you want to change, you must create some leverage and inspiration to ensure you follow through. How do you do that? Here are some ideas and strategies.

Strategy #1: Understand the Difference Between Happiness and Pleasure
Happiness is feeling good about yourself. It is a sensation associated with inner peace and mental and emotional calmness. It is feeling good about what you have accomplished, the direction of your career, how strong your relationship is with your spouse/significant other, etc. Happiness drives serotonin, a chemical messenger that drives your mood and fights depression. Overall, you are feeling good about things and the direction you are headed in life. Pleasure, on the other hand, is a short-term high that makes you feel better momentarily. It spikes dopamine, which can lead to addiction in some cases. Drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, and other illegal substances can drive dopamine for a short period. Sugar, constant scrolling on social media, and gambling can also provide momentary pleasure, but it won’t last long. The challenge is that the more you use this substance or participate in this act, the more you will eventually need to get the same effect. Focus on driving your happiness up and less on short-term, indulgent pleasures.
Strategy #2: Publicly Declare your Goals and Action Plan
When you tell other people about your goals and ambitions, you put positive pressure on yourself to follow through. Some people will publicly declare their goals on social media so everyone knows. This will ensure you do what you are supposed to do instead of what you want to do.

Strategy #3: Have an Accountability Partner/Role Model
Making changes in your life is not easy. Having someone in your corner that you can talk to and rely on when your willpower is low can help a lot. People struggling with addiction often have a sponsor who helps keep them on track at those inevitable moments of weakness. It is hard to achieve success alone. The old saying, “It takes a team to build the dream,” is so true. Get a partner to help keep you on track. It is also helpful to have a role model or someone you look up to who has achieved what you hope to achieve. I have a role model I have never met (although I hope to one day) who inspires me daily through his YouTube videos and books. His name is Bas Rutten. He is 58 years old and a former UFC Champion and UFC Hall of Famer. He still trains in martial arts daily, teaches, and is in great shape. He has eliminated all the bad vices that he once had. His story is inspiring and motivates me to stay on the right path.

Strategy #4: The Rewards of Success and the Penalties of Failure
Having a reward for successfully completing your goal can be a considerable incentive. That may be taking a trip, buying something you have always wanted, or winning a promotion or award. We are all driven by the carrot or the stick. However, studies show that the carrot is a much more effective motivator over the long term. With that said, sometimes, the penalties of failure can drive performance. I knew a guy who wanted to lose weight. He tried everything but could not stick to the daily disciplines of eating properly and exercising to get the weight off. So, he told his friend about his challenge, and they devised a plan. There was a competitor of his (in business) that he despised. He wrote a check out to this competitor for $1,000. He told his friend that if he did not lose the weight within three months, he had to send the check to his competitor on his behalf with no questions asked. Guess what? He lost weight! Making changes is hard. The old saying is, “Discipline weighs ounces, and regret weighs tons.” Good habits are hard to form but easy to love. On the other hand, bad habits are easy to form and hard to live with. Take it one day at a time, stay focused, work hard, and do your best. The best is yet to come! LEGAL MATTERS
The Many Reasons to Avoid Probate BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY
Y
ou have heard that probate is something to avoid; however, you may not understand why unless you have been through it. Here are some basic facts about probate in Florida: 1. Full probate (assets over $75,000 or under $75,000 with creditors) takes at least six months to a year or longer. During that time, the assets being probated are tied up. If your heirs want to sell your home in probate, they must go through a formal process. This includes filing a petition to administer the estate. If successful, the Judge of the probate court will sign an order called letters of administration. This could take one to three months. 2. The next step is Notice to Creditors published in a newspaper. This must be done even if there are no creditors. Creditors have 90 days from the date of first publication to file a claim against the estate. Nothing can be done regarding the distribution of the assets until after the ninety days. 3. A tax ID number from the IRS must be obtained for the estate. Once the personal representative (Executor) obtains the Letters of Administration and the tax ID number, an estate account can be opened to transfer any funds from an account or future proceeds from the sale of a home or other real estate. If real estate is involved, a court order is generally necessary to allow the closing and another court order may be necessary to distribute proceeds. 4. A formal Inventory must be filed listing the exact date of death values of all assets being probated. 5. A formal accounting may be necessary if all beneficiaries do not agree to waive it. 6. Once all distributions are made, the estate cannot be closed without another court order. 7. If an estate asset is discovered after the personal representative has been discharged by the court, the estate must be reopened, and more formalities must be followed. 8. The attorney’s fees can be quite high, depending on the value of the estate. Florida law authorizes a 3% fee on the first million dollars, and a sliding percentage thereafter. The personal representative can negotiate with the lawyer for a lower fee. If the estate is valued at $700,000 and the fee is reduced from 3% to 2%, that is still a $14,000 fee, plus about $1,000 in court costs for filing fees, publication in the newspaper, etc. An attorney can also charge an hourly rate, but this could easily exceed the 3%, particularly on smaller estates.
58
pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT
9. The personal representative will probably need to pay money out of pocket for initial costs and a Retainer for the attorney, plus funeral bills if not already pre-paid. In addition, if real estate is involved, the personal representative may have to pay taxes, utilities, maintenance, mortgage payments etc. until access to estate funds is authorized. The personal representatives will reimburse themselves at that time, but it could cause hardship if personal funds are limited. 10. All of the above is stressful and time consuming for the personal representative. Although a fee is allowed, this could be an issue if family members or other beneficiaries object. That is just a brief summary of why it is so crucial to have proper and complete estate planning with a lawyer to be sure that all assets avoid probate. A revocable living trust or a life estate deed are two possible solutions. Please refer to many of my other articles for practical and detailed tips on avoiding probate. My Dad used to say: “May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.” I will add: when you die, may your heirs avoid probate! FISH TALES
Before Gray There Was Gyotaku BY JOHN PIOTROWSKI

here isn’t a better way to cement a fishing memory of a lifetime than to get a replica mount of your favorite offshore catch. With today’s technology, you only need a picture and some measurements. Long gone are the days of bringing your fish to the taxidermist in a cooler. I can still remember growing up dreaming of catching a lunker I could “put on the wall.” One day, I will have a room where I
fish printing. If it is good enough for a Samurai, it’s good enough for me. Recently, I was introduced to this unique method of fish printing by Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman Association member Carl Treys. Carl started experimenting with Gyotaku about eight years ago, and it became his passion, along with making all kinds of skull mounts. Carl says it is simply amazing how much
can hang trophies: yellowfin, marlin, wahoo, snapper, dolphin, and grouper. Until then, there may be a method to brag about my latest catch that could also find its way to Art Basel. Gyotaku is a method of printmaking using fish that is believed to have started over 100 years ago in Japan. Apparently, you take the fish, clean it off, coat it in ink, and then rub or press a very light paper material over the fish, making a print. There are rumors that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using this method of
detail from the fish is captured through this method of fish printing. Carl will be showcasing his artwork at upcoming marine and beach festivals. After seeing some of Carl’s skull mounts, I thought about how cool it would be to have a dolphin skull mount in front of a Gyotaku print of the same dolphin. This is just another advantage of a fantastic organization where a bunch of like-minded, passionate people come together to share stories, experiences, and skills. Y

FINANCIAL FITNESS
Preparing Heirs for Their Inheritance BY GREG EDWARDS
I
nheriting money comes with plenty of benefits. From being less worried about paying for life’s necessities to enjoying the luxuries affluence can bring, inheritors often find that many of life’s key stumbling blocks are no longer in their paths. That said, an inheritance doesn’t automatically mean a worry-free life of ease. Inheriting wealth can actually create unique challenges and conflicts. A windfall can be the root of significant problems for your heirs—and therefore for you too.
Transferring Wealth
In our experience, we find that many wealth creators want to pass some of the results of their hard work and commitment to their children and other loved ones. Doing so involves a number of considerations: 1. FINANCIAL MATTERS. The aim here is to be tax-efficient in transferring the wealth. For instance, there are different tax strategies that can be employed to mitigate intergenerational loss of family wealth. 2. ENSURING HEIRS WILL BE SMART ABOUT THE MONEY.
A major concern of wealth creators is that inheritors will misuse the wealth they are given. They believe that being given control over a large amount of money and being able to make wise decisions do not always align.
But it’s not just the wealth creators who are concerned about the ability of heirs to manage their inheritances—it’s often also the heirs. It can be easy for inheritors to mismanage their fortunes, and we find that many inheritors recognize that. That means heirs need to be well prepared for the day when they receive their inheritances.

Investor Education Is A Must
Chances are, there will be a range among heirs in terms of their ability to intelligently and prudently handle significant wealth. That means different heirs will probably need different approaches to wealth education in order to best handle their inheritances. An approach we find effective across all types of inheritors is to focus on how to be responsible for their wealth. This means giving them a good understanding of the bigger picture. By knowing what they want to achieve financially and being attuned to what is going on with their money, they can make more informed decisions. Sometimes problematic—especially if heirs receive significant sums—is the possibility of being exploited by predators, grifters and the like. Significant wealth is a magnet for all manner of financial predators, so having the skills to identify such people before they do harm is really a necessity for most inheritors. Even if the assets are in trust, heirs are best served if they understand how the trusts have been set up and what they’re designed to accomplish. That way, heirs can better ensure that what is going on in the trust is what is supposed to be happening. Increasingly, wealthy families are making concerted efforts to teach future inheritors how to evaluate and oversee the work of the professionals they will rely on.
Lessons for all of us
Of course, you don’t have to be anywhere near the Super Rich level of affluence to benefit from getting your heirs ready to receive an inheritance from you someday. The key is to get going well before the day comes when assets are transferred. Encourage heirs to think about their views, values and attitudes toward money and wealth—and how those might change if their bottom line suddenly had additional zeros. In particular, help them understand some financial basics and smart ways to size up any professionals they may encounter down the road. Armed with self-awareness and a strong foundation of financial knowledge, your heirs potentially can get the most from their inheritance. Y

CREATIVELY COOKING
Comfort Food Revival Nostalgic Porcupines BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER

henever my mother decided to save money, she proudly declared she was a child of the depression. I recently came across a New York Times recipe attributing porcupines to the Depression era, explaining that adding rice to meatballs stretched a pound of ground beef. Within our family, my mother was renowned for her stuffed cabbage. She always prepared extra filling, from which she would make “porcupines.” Many years ago, when I asked my mother how to make stuffed

cabbage, she explained that she didn’t have a recipe and shared some basic pointers. Years later, determined to get something down on paper, I developed a recipe. However, stuffed cabbage is a significant endeavor best suited for feeding a crowd over a weekend. This porcupine recipe is simple and uses ground turkey to lighten it. I served the porcupines over mashed potatoes. Alternatively, a hearty crusty sourdough or rye bread would be an excellent vehicle for soaking up the sweet and savory sauce.

PREPARE THE GINGER SNAPS PASTE In a small bowl, crush the ginger snaps and mix with 6 tablespoons of water to create a paste. Set aside. MAKE THE PORCUPINES In a large bowl, thoroughly combine all the ingredients, taking care not to overmix. Shape the meat mixture into golf ball-sized balls. If the mixture is sticky, wet your hands to make the process easier. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven and cook the meatballs in batches, ensuring they are browned on all sides. They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage. Place the browned porcupines on a plate while you prepare the sauce. PREPARE THE SAUCE In the same Dutch oven, add a little more olive oil if needed and sauté the onions, seasoning with a pinch of salt. Cook until they start to brown. Add the tomato sauce, fresh lemon juice, brown sugar, and the prepared ginger snaps paste. Pour in a can of water using the empty tomato sauce can. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the porcupines to the sauce. Cover the pot and place it in the preheated oven. Cook for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and continue cooking for an additional 15 to 30 minutes until the sauce has thickened to your liking. Serve the porcupines over mashed potatoes or with good-quality bread. NOTES: This makes a lot of sauce because I love sauce. You could easily double the amount of meatballs and keep the same amount of sauce. The ginger snaps were my mother’s secret ingredient —shhhh! Y

ince 2000, Kelly Crittenberger has served as the head coach of 50 teams in various Lighthouse Point sports leagues, “I’m guessing that is about 500 games,” according to Kelly. Kelly and his wife Debbie raised six children. They all seem to have played all the sports, and Kelly coached all their teams, and they won most of the games. That is the crux of the story for those unfamiliar with Coach Crittenberger. Kelly was raised in McLean, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1985. He was the seventh of eight children. Debbie Tight, a resident of Lighthouse Point and the sister of John Tight, spent her summer visiting cousins in Virginia. During this time, Kelly, who had previously been active in high school and college sports, was now involved in assisting a local youth baseball team in Virginia. Coincidentally, several of Debbie’s younger cousins were part of the team. Reflecting on those days, Kelly remarked, “Having played baseball in McLean, I wanted to give back to local kids. I distinctly remember asking, ‘Who’s sister is that in the stands?’ when referring to Debbie. “It seemed like we had perfect attendance from the coaches whenever Debbie was there.” The Florida visitor and the Virginia coach made a connection and were married in 1988. After getting his mas-
ter’s degree in Texas and working there with now four children, the couple moved to Lighthouse Point to be closer to Debbie’s family. “We landed right here where we are sitting,” according to Debbie. “This is our South Florida starter and finisher home,” echoed Kelly. His first year as head coach was in 2000. I saw dozens of team photos from his 50 teams over many years. I asked to see all the trophies, but they had all been discarded by now, but this big stack of team photos was handed to me with obvious pride. In addition to coaching the existing team, and because he had so many children, Kelly helped create the “Pee Wee” soccer league (now called 6u), Coach Pitch Softball for girls, and the Family Sports Day for the Keepers weekend, among many other ideas for improving the leagues over the years. I could tell that Kelly misses the coaching since all of his children have aged out of the leagues. “My son Townsend works with the recreation programs now, and I ask him if he has teams that need help. The great thing is that the dads and many more moms are heavily involved with the teams. It’s a great thing to see.”

eslie and Dan Vargo earned their Keepers honors the old fashioned way. They were roped into it over a couple of drinks. Dan told me, “One night at a party, Kathy Tight got me all excited about leading the Family Sports Day that was part of the annual Keeper Days weekend,” and then the next morning, Leslie asked him, “What did you commit us to because there are boxes of sports stuff at the front door.” It was 8:00am. Kathy Tight moved fast, but Dan and Leslie were the perfect couple to fill another valuable role in the community, and they did so for nine years. Leslie and Dan met while at Allegheny College. She hails from Jamestown, New York, perhaps best known as the childhood home of Lucille Ball, while Dan is from Pittsburgh, best known for steel and sports. They didn’t date in college but returned for homecoming, and the sparks ignited. That was 30 years ago.

The rules here were different than back in Pittsburgh. But his initial friction with the city turned to a passion to help and support the city over the past two decades. When daughter Makena and son Lawton came along, they were introduced to the city’s sports leagues. Dan’s first coaching position was with the soccer programs’ 5- and 6-year-old group. Many Lighthouse Point parents will know this adorable collection of children running around vaguely resembling sports teams. Over the years, many parents have coached or helped the teams of thousands of children in the city’s sports leagues. Leslie and Dan enjoyed a lot of good company in this regard. Of course, Dan pointed out that his basketball team was “Back-to-back champions,” while Leslie seems to have created her own private “Camp Leslie” during the summer months. There is involved, and then there is really involved. “I was in the Mom’s Club and home during the day, so other moms sent kids over all the time,” she described with a hint of nostalgia for those days of youthful joy. “I loved those days.” So, Leslie and Dan were given the baton to lead the Family Sports Day. Over the nine years they led the event, the Crittenberger family, the Tight family, and many others contributed to and participated in this wonderful community activity. Makena is now a junior studying art, and Lawton is a freshman studying sports management, both at the University of Florida. Leslie and Dan were both wearing Gator apparel during our time together. John Lavisky
The Google of Lighthouse Point BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU
John Lavisky
76
John Lavisky, the City of Lighthouse Point’s City Administrator for the last two decades, will be posthumously honored as a Keeper at the city’s Keeper Days Weekend in February. Lavisky, who died Oct. 13 after battling an extended illness, served the city for 28 years, first as a fire chief, then as city administrator. On Nov. 2, at the city’s Heroes’ Memorial, remembrance services were held for Lavisky, 69, who was revered by several city commissioners for his dedication to public service, archival memory and extensive knowledge about the city. “John ran our city for 21 years,” said Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk, “His institutional knowledge about the city and its history was unbelievable. He was really like the Google of Lighthouse Point.” Whenever Van Buskirk went to Lavisky with a question, the Mayor says he was welcomed heartily by Lavisky, who was usually carrying a folder full of material to explain the backstory of any particular issue. “He was the guy you went to,” Van Buskirk said. “You called him, and he would then do his thing as a city administrator, finding out the solution, figuring out the problem, giving you all the backstory.”
pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT
City commissioner Sandy Johnson echoed Van Buskirk’s sentiment. “There was never a time for me that John did not drop whatever he was doing to assist me in whatever I needed,” she said. “John was such a driving force in our city for so many years. He was hardworking, loyal and totally devoted to his job. The other side of John was the family man, with a loving wife, two daughters and seven adorable grandchildren. Somehow he managed his unconditional commitment to his job and still had time to be husband, dad and grandpa extraordinaire.” In his last months as City Administrator, Mayor Van Buskirk says Lavisky was on fire for pushing through unfinished city business. He wanted to leave a legacy. “We were setting the City of Lighthouse point up for the next 20 years of the future. We were assessing the vulnerability of bridges, paving sea walls, looking at funding initiatives, dredging plans, and all these studies were happening. We were finishing off rewriting the city code, which took about five and a half years,” Van Buskirk said. “I think that’s the reason, or partly why, John, frankly, worked right to the end.” When news of Lavisky’s declining health came to light, Van Buskirk says the Keeper Days committee moved to make Lavisky a Keeper immediately. he International Fishing Pier draws in fishermen and sightseers from around the globe, contributing to Deerfield’s globally recognized live camera feed. Regrettably, the pier suffered damage from a storm surge during Hurricane Nicole on November 9, 2022. As reported by the Sun Sentinel, the pier has remained partially closed since the storm struck. Following the incident, the City conducted a structural assessment of the pier, leading to several recommendations for enhancements. This project is a cornerstone attraction on the Deerfield’s beachfront, poised to benefit the surrounding community significantly. Moreover, it aligns with the City’s commitment to advancing infrastructure, facilities, and organizational capacity for a sustainable community. According to City spokesman David Hunt, as quoted in the Sun Sentinel, the project is budgeted at $4.5 million. To gather input from residents, the City initiated an online survey regarding the pier, seeking residents’ opinions on various improvement options.

DEEPENING CONNECTIONS — TO YOUR LOVE AND YOUR COMMUNITY
February — the enchanting season of love. I confess, during my single years, I’d humorously declare that Valentine’s Day was canceled. It’s undeniably challenging when the air is filled with plans for romantic evenings and flowers making their way to various desks and doorsteps. Yet, taking a moment to acknowledge the significance of romantic love and dedicating a single day each year to pause, reflect, and cherish your partner is, indeed, a worthwhile idea. Michelle Hays shares insightful tips on why love is such a powerful force and offers guidance on how to genuinely appreciate the love of your life. However, let’s not overlook the various other forms of love that can go unnoticed during the Valentine’s Day hubbub. Enter high school senior Caroline Jones, who has initiated a non-profit organization centered around the belief that a handmade card can brighten anyone’s day, especially those navigating through darker times. — Susan Rosser

ove. Love. Love. Did you know that love is considered to be the most precious gift in the world? Why? Because love has the power to deepen our connections, heal our emotional wounds, and make life worth living. Studies have shown that people who have love in their lives are more likely to be happier, healthier and more satisfied with life. My husband Brian and I have been passengers on the rollercoaster of love for 14 years. And what a ride it’s been! We’ve laughed and cried. We’ve made tons of mistakes. We’ve fought and forgave each other countless times. We’ve navigated the intricacies of a stepfamily. We traveled to amazing places. We’ve had hospital visits and bruised egos. We have experienced losses and deaths. We have made love and made a living. We experienced loneliness

and disconnection. We have embraced all the changes along the way (some easier than others.) All in the name of love. I have no doubt that you have experienced the crazy twists and turns, joys and sorrows and everything in between in your relationship as well. When we are “loving,” we are the best version of ourselves and we thrive — despite the imperfections of ourselves and our partners. Love is something we give to others from our hearts. Love is precious. Yet, love can never ever be measured by material possessions. Yes, we give tokens of love to the people we love for their birthdays, the holidays and the milestones of our lives but…. here is the thing that makes love precious…love simply cannot be replicated no matter what. We all love in our own unique way. People tend to make a lot

LHP Teen Spreads Joy of comparisons when it comes to love, and that is where the trouble begins because no two relationships can ever be the same. Have you ever heard that comparison is the thief of joy? Sure, some aspects are the same. We see other couples holding hands, having children and celebrating together etc. However, your marriage is completely unique to you and your partner. How precious is that? I am willing to bet that you haven’t thought of your marriage as being “precious” before! Yes, your relationship is precious. Of course, we all express love in our own way and there may be some similarities, but your marriage will never be the same as your neighbor’s marriage, your best friend’s marriage, your parent’s marriage, your co-worker’s marriage or your sibling’s marriage! No two marriages can ever be the same. Makes sense, doesn’t it? When you got engaged, you either gave or received a symbol of your unique love and commitment to each other.
One Handmade Card at a Time
In a world that often moves too fast, Caroline Jones, a Lighthouse Point resident and senior at American Heritage, found a way to slow down and spread joy through a simple yet heartfelt gesture — handmade cards. Cares Cards, a project initiated by Caroline and her friend Gabriella Gottheimer during their Junior year of high school, has blossomed into a communitydriven initiative with a mission to teach others about the profound impact handmade cards can have on those in need. Caroline’s love for cards began with her childhood enthusiasm for crafting personalized Valentine’s Day cards for her classmates. As the pandemic hit, Caroline redirected this passion toward connecting with her Grandfather in Philadelphia by sending him cards and care packages. This simple act sparked the idea for Cares Cards, a project to bring joy and connection to individuals in nursing homes, hospitals, shelters, or anyone facing life’s challenges. Cares Cards involves collaboration with various groups, from schools and art clubs to community organizations. Caroline and her team work with several groups, including the Teen Advisory Board of the Lighthouse Point Library, to create a diverse array of cards. They also visit schools and clubs, such as the National Junior Honor Society at St. Paul’s, to teach students the art of cardmaking. Quality control ensures that each card meets the project’s standards — a vibrant design on the front, an encouraging message inside, and a stamp on the back indicating approval. The impact of Care’s Cards extends to organizations like Lynn Cancer Center in Boca Raton, The Cleveland Clinic, local nursing homes, and Boca Helping Hands. At Lynn Cancer Center, handmade cards find a place in infusion rooms, providing a source of comfort and joy for those undergoing treatment. The group provided over 800 holiday cards to Boca Helping Hands during Thanksgiving, enhancing the warmth of the holiday season for underprivileged individuals. The cards were distributed with Thanksgiving meals. Cares Cards has expanded its reach within Lighthouse Point and beyond, garnering support from schools, clubs, and organizations. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive. The project has donated over 2,500 cards to date, a testament to its growing impact. LEFT Gabriella Gottheimer (left)

That diamond is one of the hardest substances in nature and represents strength, endurance, permanence and is a symbol of mutual commitment and everlasting love. Isn’t it time you considered thinking of your marriage as a precious jewel? When you have something so rare and precious, wouldn’t you want to make every effort to take care of it and do your best not to lose it? Love is life’s most precious gift, yet we don’t always make every effort to take care of it or keep it safe and sound. Sad but true. I know the heartbreak of divorce. I also know how frustrating and challenging marriage can be. Don’t give up on your spouse and don’t give up on love. Love is a powerful force, and it can be the source of our greatest joy and bring the deepest meaning to our lives. Love is felt deep within our hearts and has the power to transform our lives in ways that we
never thought possible. When we deeply love someone, we accept their imperfections, faults and all. Love is being willing to forgive. Love encourages us to be the best version of ourselves. When we love, we have an innate desire to share life with our spouses; we want to create memories together and share the sorrows and joys of life together. We show our love with our words, actions and behaviors. Love is a verb. Love allows you to be your authentic self. Love welcomes vulnerability and creates trust. Love is even more powerful than you realize. Love can heal you. Love can boost your confidence. Love can even improve your health! Love reduces stress and lowers our blood pressure. Love can provide us with a greater sense of well-being! So, what are you willing to do to have the kind of love and marriage that you really want? I can assure you that you cannot just sit there and expect love to grow and deepen without any effort, patience and the willingness to learn how to be a better partner. Your marriage is worth it. Did you know that love is the highest form of energy on this planet. Love vibrates at the highest frequency. Decide

Thoughtfulness goes a long way. “Wink.” Love is so powerful. So, give it freely and unconditionally, and watch the quality, meaning, happiness, and love in your life expand. Choose love and may your Valentine’s Day be one to remember. Y
Spreading Joy
As a high school senior, Caroline envisions taking the Cares Cards concept with her to college. She is interested in pursuing a career in non-profit management, so her handson experience running Cares Cards has been invaluable. She has also laid the groundwork for a potential successor at her high school and aims to explore the possibility of an online platform where individuals can request specific cards for their loved ones in need. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Care’s Cards plans to bring joy to Stratford Court, Abbey Delray, and Boca Helping Hands. The project continues to evolve, with aspirations of reaching different college campuses, high schools, and art schools. Cares Cards exemplifies how the tiny seed of an idea can blossom and have a significant positive impact. The power of a simple act of kindness, like a handmade card, has the potential to bring light into the lives of those facing challenges. As the project continues to grow, it serves as an inspiring reminder that even in the digital age, the personal touch of a handwritten note can make a significant difference in someone’s day. Caroline proudly summed it all up by quoting the group’s mission statement, “To teach others the growing impact handmade cards have on the creators and those in need. Our goal is to brighten the lives of those in nursing homes, homeless shelters, and hospitals one card at a time.”

We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The veal is butterflied, pounded thin, stuffed with prosciutto, gorgonzola, and wild mushrooms and topped with a brandy Marsala

e Sereno, a family-owned St. Barts beach hotel, boasts 39 suites and three four-bedroom villas on a virtually private beach at Grand Cul de Sac. The hotel offers a pool, sundeck, restaurant, and spa pavilion overlooking the water, ideal for travelers seeking a respite from the world. Rebuilt in December 2018 with an understated, contemporary, and environmentally aware design, Le Sereno incorporates exotic materials such as sustainably sourced wood and stones and integrates energy-efficient technology throughout the property. Of course, all vacations involve dining, and Le Sereno Al Mare Restaurant is the hotel’s central hub. With an open-air concept, the restaurant offers a memorable dining experience. The menu focuses on fresh, local ingredients, featuring contemporary Italian dishes with plenty of seafood. For something more casual, Plage provides a picturesque setting for dining under coconut trees. The all-day menu offers salads and sandwiches. And if you need to really kick start your relaxation, the Spa Le Sereno includes the island’s only beachfront treatment room, offering guests a serene and laid-back luxury experience. Y

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice
My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.
Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery
My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.
