Itypically take the summer off from writing my column, “Creatively Speaking.” But, in the interest of continuity, I will take a quasi-break this summer and write a more traditional editor’s column, which will not be as creative — hence, the title, “Not So Creatively Speaking.”

I have a friend from Manhattan who is not a fan of Florida. One of her main gripes, aside from the hair-ruining humidity, is the lack of walkability. According to her, the suburban strip mall is responsible for the deterioration of societal values and systems. Hyperbole anyone? Unfortunately, while the strip mall provides plenty of convenience for a car-loving culture, it is not conducive to a walkable neighborhood, nor is it much of a community builder.

When I was a kid, my small town on Long Island had a little main street in the center of town. It was about a mile from our house, and when I was old enough, I was allowed to walk into “the village” with my friends. The “village” was no thriving metropolis, yet we could certainly make an afternoon of it. We would grab a Slurpy at 7-Eleven, meander around the five and dime and then shop for Whacky Packs and Bubble Yum down the street at Weintraub’s — which seemed to sell everything. The appeal of strolling along an avenue where we can pop into shops, grab a coffee, a cocktail, or a bite to eat is self-evident. A few “downtowns” are left in South Florida from the pre-strip mall era (Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale and Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach). More recently, a few developed walkable communities have sprung up, such as Boca Raton’s Mizner Park.

And now, Pompano Beach has unveiled two developers with plans to create an actual downtown Pompano Beach. (See the feature story on page 60.) If all goes well, Downtown Pompano could be the walkable community of the future. This sort of lifestyle looks pretty appealing to me. To be honest, I could use a cappuccino right now, but I don’t own a cappuccino machine, and I don’t feel like driving to Starbucks. But if I could walk... Y

Lighthouse Point City Commission Divided on Issuing Demolition Permits for the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club

April 25 marked another contentious Lighthouse Point City Commission meeting when, in an effort to catalyze forward momentum on the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, Commission Vice President Sandy Johnson opened up a discussion on potentially amending the City’s current devel-

opment agreement with yacht club developer, Terry Paterson, in order to expedite the demolition permit and tear down the now defunct property.

“I think we’re at a critical point right now,” Johnson said at the meeting. “One of the things that I think would help is if we would

expedite the demolition permit and say that it’s time now we take the club down, because at this point, the club’s not ever going to be used. It’s been vacant for almost a year.”

According to the current developer’s agreement Paterson must first prove “financial viability” for completion of the project before a demolition permit can be issued by the City. The

agreement also states that once demolition begins, the clock starts on the agreed construction timeline of 40 months. Johnson proposed the Commission allow Paterson to begin demolition before the financial viability requirement is fully met, and consider not starting the clock upon the issuance of the demolition permit. No other Commissioner seconded this idea, so the motion stalled.

Following the meeting, Commissioner Evert Marshall spoke with Lighthouse Point magazine and expressed his concern that the building, as it stands now, could be a potential liability.

“The building serves no purpose and I would consider it a hazard,” he said. “I understand some Commissioners are worried about him [Paterson] going belly up. But at the same time, an intelligent person would understand that the ground is worth more vacant than with a building on it. If he [Paterson] has the money to tear the building down, and he’s going to have to pay for it, then what is the problem?”

The problem, according the Commissioner Jason Joffe, is that Paterson has not shown sufficient financial viability to complete the project.

“I have seen failed projects like this and the unfortunate carnage that has ensued,” Joffe said. “It becomes embroiled in litigation for years and years. I’ve been very clear from day one with this project, that that was my greatest fear. We are where I exactly didn’t want to be, and where the development agreement was supposed to prevent us from being, which is a half started, closed club.”

In the developer’s agreement, what exactly constitutes sufficient proof of financial viability is not clearly defined.

According to Paterson, in order to show proof of financial viability, he was asked by Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk to present a letter from a financial institution showing the bank’s intention to fund the development project. Paterson said he was given a clear example of such a letter that was submitted to another municipality to prove financial viability on a similar development project. Paterson said he followed the template and submitted a letter to the City Commission from Colorado Savings Bank dated April 20, 2023.

The letter was not deemed by

the Commission would discuss the status of the yacht club at its April 25 meeting, Paterson did not appear. When asked why by Lighthouse Point magazine, Paterson said he feared losing decorum. Instead Joseph Gratton, with Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Investments, came forward to answer the Commissioners’ questions.

Ultimately the Mayor has the authority to determine if sufficient financial viability has been shown to satisfy the current developer’s agreement. The Mayor said

the Mayor as sufficient proof of financial viability for a few reasons: it only showed funds for 16 of the 22 residential units, it did not show funds for the rest of the yacht club development, and it was subject to loan approval and closing conditions.

Paterson said he has been waiting on another letter from Synovus Bank which he said will show funding for the rest of the project. He said he is willing to show the Mayor the documents that prove he meets all loan requirements and closing conditions, but said he does not want to submit those documents formally to the Commission because he does not want “sensitive personal financial information to become public record.”

Paterson has not done so yet. Until that point, or until the Commission votes and agrees to amend the developer’s agreement, the demolition permits will not be issued by the City.

This fact was misrepresented by a recent newsletter published by the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club which stated that financial viability had been proven and that the project was cleared for demolition permits.

“I hope Mr. Paterson focuses his resources on finalizing his permit and securing the financing he needs to deliver on the promises he has made to the membership of that club and the residents of Lighthouse Point. If he did that, we wouldn’t have any issue,” said Commissioner Joffe. “We’d have no issue at all.” Y

Discipline Equals Freedom

Jocko Willink is a retired Navy Seal, best-selling author, entrepreneur, and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Jocko is famous for his 4:30am daily wake-up. He posts a picture of his watch every morning and does his daily morning workout consisting of weight training, calisthenics, sprints, and more. He also trains in JiuJitsu every day in the afternoon. His mantra is, “Discipline Equals Freedom.” Jocko is currently 50 years old.

The word discipline is derived from the Latin word discplina, which means “instruction or training.” It is derived from the root word discere – “to learn.”

How does discipline equal freedom?

Most people wait around to get motivated before they do something. That may involve watching a video on YouTube, reading a book, talking to a friend, and more. They depend on something from the outside to spark the desire to do what needs to be done.

When a business philosopher and teacher, Jim Rohn, was teaching a seminar about success, a guy said he needed his boss to motivate him every morning. Jim Rohn smiled and asked, “What if he doesn’t show up? Jim said, “You have to have a better plan for your life than that.”

Discipline truly is freedom because you are the captain of your ship. You are in control of what you do and when you do it. You aren’t relying on anything external. When it’s time to work out, you do it. When it is time to work on the project, you do it. When it is time to spend time with the family, you do it.

In simple terms, discipline is doing what you are supposed to do whether you like it or not. Sounds simple and easy, but we all know otherwise.

Award-winning composer John Williams wrote the score for “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and many more films. When asked about his success, he said it came down to daily discipline. Every day he sits down and writes music whether he feels like it or not. He said sometimes I write great stuff, and other times it is terrible — but that doesn’t matter. What matters is writing every day led him to write the masterpieces that have defined his career.

The problem with motivation is that it is temporary. You get fired up for a moment or a few days, but that wears off. If you are relying on that, you are stuck in the mud. Being disciplined means you take 100% responsibility for your life and take action necessary to succeed.

How can you be disciplined in your relationships?

Discipline plays a key role in the success or failure of relationships. Most people think relationships, such as marriage, are a 50/50 scenario. The thought process is I do my part, and you do yours. On the surface, that makes sense.

In reality, successful relationships are 100/0. You take 100% responsibility for the relationship and what happens. When your spouse is upset, please don’t ask what is wrong with them. Instead, ask yourself, “What did I do (or didn’t do) to cause them to be upset, angry, frustrated, etc.”

Taking this action is not easy to implement. However, it works. The commitment is to the relationship and the other person. You understand that you cannot control what someone else says or does but can control your response. You can choose to respond positively, proactively, and calmly. You can choose the disciplined path and check your ego at the door, so you can zero in on what you can do (focus on solutions) to improve the situation and learn from it so it doesn’t happen again.

What do most people do? They react! They get angry, sad, emotional, or any slew of negative emotions. We have all been guilty of this before. I am not proud of it, but I am trying to learn and improve.

Let me be clear; I am not scoring straight A’s on all this stuff. I, like you, am a work in progress. I am constantly under construction and working towards the best version of myself. One thing I know for sure is that when I focus on taking disciplined action, my better version surfaces.

How should we discipline our children?

I also read that the word discipline comes from the root word “disciple,” which means “to teach.” When disciplining kids, our goal should be to teach a lesson, such as the right way to behave, follow the rules, etc. Adults should not discipline children out of anger or emotion. Is this easier said than done? Oh yeah!

We have to understand that there is no easy way to navigate life. There is only discipline. When we understand and stop fighting against it, life becomes more fun, and our results will go through the roof! Y

What Are Your Biggest Financial Concerns?

In our experience — and supported by research — we find that affluent investors tend to share five major key concerns about their financial futures. Think about your own financial life as you review the following top concerns.

Concern #1: Preserving wealth

Wealth preservation aims to produce the best possible investment returns consistent with your time frame and risk tolerance. Preserving wealth throughout one’s lifetime has become the biggest financial issue faced by most of today’s affluent investors. Make Sure Your Revocable Living Trust Is Not an Empty Box

Arevocable living trust is a very valuable estate planning tool. If done properly, it can avoid probate, as well as protect you and your assets if you are incapacitated.

However, unlike a last will and testament, it does not automatically apply to all of the assets that you own. When a client comes in to discuss a revocable living trust, I analogize the trust to a box that we are building. Typically, the first thing we put into the box is your home. We prepare a quit claim deed where we transfer your home from yourself individually to yourself as trustee of your trust. Your homestead remains the same, your real estate taxes remain the same, and your ability to sell the property or mortgage it remains the same; however, upon your death, the property avoids probate. We also transfer non-homestead real estate to the trust.

We then provide an instruction letter that explains what the client needs to do to transfer other assets to the trust, such as brokerage accounts and bank accounts. You can also name the trust as a beneficiary for IRA accounts; however, there are tax benefits to name an individual as beneficiary. This should be discussed with your accountant. But it is generally up to the client (unless the attorney is hired specifically to do this administrative work) to follow up with the banks and the brokers to be sure that the proper paperwork is completed to change the name of the account to the trust. Usually, the financial institution will require a copy of the trust’s first page indicating the name and the date it was executed. The institution may also require copies of the last pages with the witnesses and notary. The client will then complete a form with the institution, which will result in the account being changed from the individual name to the name of the trust. Future statements will then show the client’s name and the word trustee or an abbreviation such as TTE. At that point, you know that the account is in the name of the trust.

If this administrative work is not done, and there are no benefi-

ciaries listed for the particular account, then the account will need to be probated in order for the trust to get it. This is done via the “pourover” will that is typically executed at the same time as the trust. This “pourover” will names the trust as the beneficiary of any asset that is only in the name of the individual with no beneficiaries designated. Of course, if you already have beneficiaries designated on all accounts, it is not necessary to name the trust.

If you already have a revocable living trust and you want your trust to cover all of your assets, you should contact your brokers, banks, investment advisors, etc. to be sure that your trust is either named as the beneficiary of the account or that you as the trustee are the owner of that account. Also, be sure you own your home and any other real estate as trustee of your trust. If you do not, you should see an attorney to do a quit claim deed.

Remember, your trust is only an empty box until you put something into it. Y

Weird Remedies

Iam always on the lookout for unusual ways to treat various medical problems and am happy to share the following with you. (Disclaimer: Speak with your health care professional before trying any of these.)

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE:

Mistletoe supposedly helps with this, but I am dubious. When I see a pretty girl standing under the mistletoe, my blood pressure goes up.

BACKACHE: See your tailor. It may be that one leg is shorter than the other. Do not attempt to shorten the longer leg. Instead, carry your cash in the shoe of the shorter leg. This also keeps your money safe. Just remember to take out some cash before reaching the checkout in Publix, so you don’t gross-out the clerk.

CLAUSTROPHOBIA: Sniffing green apples may ease the symptoms. Expect some sideways looks from fellow passengers in an elevator as you stuff pieces of apple up your nose. Bonus: If you’re selling your house, place baskets of green apples around. The aroma may make the buyer feel that the house is larger than it is.

WARTS: Cover them with duct tape. After three days, rub with pumice. Repeat until the wart is gone. Duct tape also is helpful for taping ducts.

JOINT PAIN: Soak golden raisins overnight in gin. The boozy raisins contain anti-inflammatory properties. Alternative: Just drink the gin. Stop when you begin “feeling no pain.”

POISON IVY: Rub the inside of a banana peel on the rash. Warning: Do not do this if you are surrounded by chimpanzees as you may get licked to death.

HAIR LOSS: Pour boiling water over a handful of stinging nettles. Do not pour this concoction on your head, or it will become a hair remover. Use a cup and drink.

HEADACHES: Soak your feet in hot water. If the water is hot enough, you’ll forget about your headache.

COUGH: Try snail syrup. Proponents say it thins out mucous ( if you can get it down). I fail to see how a creature that leaves a slime trail can have that effect, so I don’t use it. Instead, I recommend taking Ex-Lax. You’ll be afraid to cough.

FLU: Take a mustard bath. Throw in some hot dogs and baked beans, and have dinner while you cure. Mayonnaise works just as well; simply omit the franks and beans. Use tuna fish instead.

VIRAL INFECTIONS: Here is the recipe for Dried

Lizard Soup from Hong Kong: Boil two dried lizards with yams, dates and onions. For best results, be sure to boil a male and a female lizard. The recipe does not say why this is necessary or how to tell the sexes apart.

BACTERIAL INFECTIONS: I swear I am not making this up. The FDA has approved a treatment using donated human feces to treat a potentially life-threatening bacteria. The treatment, called rebyota, uses gut bacteria collected from healthy persons’ stool to restore a patient’s microbiome. The agency will soon change its name to the FDPA — Food, Drug & Poop Administration. Y

Are You Growing in Your Relationship?

Most likely, you’ve heard the quote, “Grow old with me; the best is yet to be.” The English poet Robert Browning wrote that in 1864. I have heard that quote many times, yet it has come to mean something very different to me through the years. We all know growing older isn’t exactly what it’s cracked up to be. Remember when we were kids and couldn’t wait to be “older?” Old enough to drive. Old enough to date. Old enough to drink. Old enough to make our own choices.

So here we are, “older,” with responsibilities, families, bills, work, chores, and obligations. Think about all those choices we have made so far. Did those choices create the life we wanted or hoped for? Hopefully, you can say yes! For some people growing older certainly didn’t turn out to be as much fun as they expected, particularly regarding their marriages. What about you? As you get older, is your marriage turning out to be what you had hoped for? Has growing older together become more fulfilling? Did I hear you say no? Did you say you are still waiting for the “best is yet to be” part of your marriage? Have you ever considered why that is? I have, and it’s not what you think.

I’ve learned that growing old together is not the part that makes us closer to our partners. Think about that for a moment. We all know that couple who have been married for what seems like forever, yet they don’t even seem to like each other. They seem to have accepted their unhappy lives as normal. Yet somehow take pride in themselves for sticking it out all those years. I want more than that, don’t you? Growing older together doesn’t magically create a more fulfilling relationship. It’s not the “time” we spend together.

How we grow together makes all the difference in our relationship. So, what exactly does growth in marriage look like? What do we have to do?

Growing requires vulnerability. It’s about learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable so that you can effectively communicate your needs. It’s being willing to listen. It’s learning to seek understanding of each other when disagreements inevitably arise. It’s the choice to consider your partners’ needs and wants as essential as your own. It is accepting that all marriages have challenges. When you are growing together, you begin to understand and accept that there will be times when your partner might be selfish or

say something hurtful. You know there will be times when you may feel neglected or unloved. You realize there will be growing pains, but you know it will all be worth it!

Can you imagine having deeper feelings of love, trust, and connection? Imagine knowing you would be able to avoid or resolve most of your differences in a loving way. Imagine having a clearer understanding of one another. Imagine genuinely feeling loved. Imagine feeling more comfortable, happier, and more fulfilled in your marriage. Welcome to the Commitment Stage of marriage. The stage where you have become one. A team. No more resentment. No more power struggles. The “I don’t need you; I choose you stage.” The Commitment Stage.

Tasting Tips for Wine Beginners

Recently, I was asked to do an introductory wine talk and tasting for young adults. The idea was to give 20-25 curious and questioning twenty-somethings a greater appreciation of wine and to cut through some of the confusion and mystique of picking and buying wine. My planning for this event got me thinking about writing a column for people relatively new to wine. It may be obvious, but regardless of age, if you’re interested in wine, there’s much more to learn about it than simply swallowing it and saying what you like and perhaps a few words about why. All that is undoubtedly important and optimistically a good start, but there is more to it than that.

Getting to know wine takes time, patience, curiosity, and an open mind — not to mention some extra money. Because wines often vary significantly in how they taste, smell, and pair with food, it’s helpful and enlightening to experience different kinds of wines. For many reasons, most of us can’t do that quickly. Drinking wine is usually a leisurely process. Often, we drink the same kinds of wines, and maybe even the same kinds made by the same producers. That’s understandable, provided we enjoy those wines. It’s easy and familiar. For many of us, I think, it takes some extra thought and preparation, plus overcoming some hesitation, to deliberately buy and drink wines we haven’t tried before or wouldn’t ordinarily buy.

So, what are some things you can do if you’re just getting interested in wine or looking to expand wine your knowledge or repertoire, so to speak?

Arrange Your Very Own Tasting

If you’re new to wine or want to expand your appreciation for good wine, I suggest tasting several different kinds of wines either in a single sitting or over several days. You can do it at home if you want or elsewhere. It’s fun to do with other people where participants can interact and share thoughts, although there’s certainly nothing wrong with tasting new wines by yourself. Wine tastings that are led by sommeliers or other people knowledgeable about wine can be wonderfully informative ways to taste and learn about wines. More and more of these opportunities are available through wine shops, restaurants, clubs of various kinds, and wineries, where available. (A sommelier, by the way, is a person who has been extensively trained

and certified as an expert in wine and pairing wine with food.) Going to a good restaurant or bar with an extensive offering of wine by the glass can also be an excellent way to experience different wines. However, while convenient, buying wine by the glass can be pricey. Wines sold by the glass are typically priced at 30-75% of the retail cost for the same wine by the bottle — a standard 750 ML wine bottle equals approximately 25.4 ounces or about five to six servings.

The Prep

To prepare for your own tasting, find a wine merchant you like or trust that ideally has a large and varied international selection of wines. Spend a few moments with one or more of the salespeople to get a sense of who can guide you knowledgeably. Try to avoid salespeople who seem interested mainly in hawking particular wines or directing you to wines the store is trying to “move,” or that are out of your budget. Explain that you’re just getting familiar with wine or that you want to widen your knowledge by trying several different kinds of wines. Tell them you want to try at least two contrasting red wines and two contrasting white wines. By “contrasting,” I mean each pair of reds and whites should have different characteristics. For example, one might be light-bodied and mildly flavored, while the other is full-bodied and bold. Consider wines mainly in the $15-30 price range. That should put you in a sweet spot for many affordable wines of very good to excellent quality. You could easily spend more. But if you’re not yet familiar

with a particular wine type or style, you might want to wait until you’ve confirmed that you like the wine before buying the more expensive bottle. You also could spend under $15, but then you’re more likely to get simple, one-dimensional, likely mass-produced wines made with poorer quality grapes and possibly other ingredients to enhance or manipulate its taste and other characteristics. Remember that the most important and costly ingredients in any wine were grapes used to make it. This is a big, complicated topic, but as a general rule, better grapes, which invariably cost more than their poorer quality counterparts, yield tastier, more nuanced and sophisticated wines that in turn, command higher prices.

How to Choose

For this initial tasting, consider picking wines that have each been made largely from the same grape varietals, as opposed to blends of different grapes. This will help you appreciate how each grape varietal can produce dry wines with specific, often very noticeable characteristics. It will also help later to provide an appreciation for how blending different kinds of grapes can create a vast array of other wines.

the medium-bodied, mildly tannic, and red and black fruit-flavored wines made mainly or entirely from dangiovese grapes. Another possible red pairing could be a barbera or dolcetto wine from Italy’s Piedmont region and an Australian shiraz (the Australian name for the syrah grape). This will contrast a light to medium-bodied red with bright cherry and other flavors with a more full-bodied, velvety textured red with dark fruit and peppery flavors. Two other contrasting reds to consider are Spanish rioja crianza and California zinfandel. Rioja is light to medium-bodied, fruity but earthy wine made mostly or entirely from tempranillo grapes. Crianza is the lightest version. Zinfandel (aka primitivo in Italy) is typically a bold, full-bodied wine with pronounced red and black fruit flavors.

Serve, Taste, and Enjoy

To start your tasting, open the wines you’re ready to taste, and let the reds sit open to the air for about 30 minutes. Serve your white wine chilled but not right out of the refrigerator. Serve the reds at a cool room temperature (60-65F). (If necessary, put them in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes beforehand.) Pour about 2-3 ounces of the first wine into six to eight ounce, wide-mouth wine glasses or tumblers. The glasses should be clear, so you can see the color of the wine and roomy enough to swirl the wine without spilling. Serve with a glass of water and mild crackers, cheese, olives, cold meats, sausage, or other charcuterie.

If you’re alone or with only one or two others, you might want to open the whites and reds on different days. If any wine is left over, recork the bottles and store them in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh enough to drink for at least several days. They should be fine for cooking for weeks thereafter.

Two delicious but contrasting white wines to buy are a 100% sauvignon blanc wine from France’s Loire River Valley region or from New Zealand and 100% pinot grigio (aka pinot gris) from northern Italy’s Alto Adige or Friuli regions. This pairing contrasts sauvignon blanc’s bold tart citrus, apple, pear, floral, grassy, and other characteristics with pinot grigio’s bright but milder, more lighthearted lemon, peach, and melon personality. See what flavors and aromas you detect. Not everyone tastes the same things. You can also contrast other wines. For instance, an alternative to sauvignon blanc could be Spanish albariño or it’s Portuguese twin, alvarinho. A substitute for pinot grigio could be South African chenin blanc. Another contrast to all these wines is a dry riesling, perhaps from Germany’s Mosel region or from Washington State or New York’s Finger Lakes.

Two contrasting red wines I recommend tasting together are a California or Oregon pinot noir and a chianti classico from Italy. This combination will highlight the differences between light-bodied, friendly, and red fruit-flavored pinot noir wines and

Before tasting each wine, notice the wine’s color. Swirl the wine several times to help release the wine’s aromas and then put your nose literally in or near the glass’s opening. Try and identify what you smell — specific fruits, spices, vanilla, cocoa, candies, flowers, earth, wood, toast, etc.. When swirling, look to see how thin or viscous the wine is. There might be long drips (also called “tears” or “legs”) slowly sliding down your glass’s sides. Generally, greater wine viscosity correlates with higher alcohol content — look for that on the bottle labels. Higher alcohol content also means the wine may taste heavier and be more filling.

Next, take a sip but don’t swallow too quickly — or at all if you don’t like the wine or prefer not to imbibe. Try and let the wine touch all parts of your tongue and note how it feels and tastes and how long the flavors last. Each wine has a specific profile. The texture and mouthfeel, for example, might be silky and smooth, gritty and astringent, steely and acidic, or something altogether different. It can have a few or many flavors, such as fruit, wood, tobacco, earth, spices, herbs, and candy. It can be bright, racy, and minerally, tart and acidic, or soft and creamy. When describing what you experience, try to think of what you know or have experienced. Sometimes the description may escape you; you recognize a characteristic but cannot name it. Good wine, especially, is often like that. Moreover, the smells and flavors may change after you eat certain foods, and the wine is exposed longer to air.

When did you start this business?

We officially registered Reefs Edge Aquatics as a Florida LLC in October 2021. We broke ground in April 2022 and recently had our grand opening on April 22, 2023.

How did you start this business?

At first, I was looking to partner with an existing local aquarium shop, but that didn’t pan out. Once partnerships or purchasing an existing location wasn’t an option, the search for a prime location began. In 2014, I tried to pursue this venture and ran into complications. It just wasn’t the right time. I’m a firm believer in all things happening for a reason. Thankfully, this time around, I have the right support system and a partner that encourages and supports me unconditionally. It’s sort of surreal, actually. I still feel in shock that we’ve achieved such a fantastic brand.

What was your inspiration?

Ever since childhood, I’ve been fascinated with the sea — specifically coral reefs. I am a total nerd when it comes to that sort of thing. I love plants, animals, and nature.

What were you doing before running this business?

Before starting Reefs Edge Aquatics, I worked for a local software development firm specializing in solutions for the growing cannabis market. I was responsible for legislative relations and government contracting. I had the opportunity to travel throughout the world, advising legislative and regulatory bodies on proper medical and adult-use cannabis program management. It was a great company to work for, and I was extremely passionate about the industry. Unfortunately, another company acquired our firm, which destroyed the culture and forced many good people to resign or be terminated. As a

result, I was given more responsibility with limited resources and burned out pretty quickly. I believe business owners should value their employees and recognize that without them, nothing is possible. When employees don’t feel valued, productivity and quality go out the window, and the brand ultimately suffers.

In 2015, I enrolled in college and eventually obtained my bachelor’s in business administration, focusing on project management. I followed that up with a master’s in information systems management specializing in information security. After parting ways with the cannabis software firm, I tried the consulting route for about a year and even looked for a full-time position with another employer. For whatever reason, I was unsuccessful in finding anything, and my passion for the industry simply fizzled out. Feeling a bit defeated, I started looking at the prospect of opening an aquarium store again. Only this time around, I was in a very different place in my life. My partner and I discussed the possibility of opening an aquarium shop, and while hesitant, he supported my decision, and we began registering the company.

What makes you passionate about your business?

I’m a Broward County native. I was born in Plantation and attended high school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. MSD STRONG! I grew up going to the beach, boating, fishing, and enjoying all South Florida has to offer. When I was about 11 years old, my uncle Jason took my brother and me to Red Reef Park in Boca Raton. He taught us how to use SCUBA equipment. I instantly fell in love.

What is the most challenging part of running this business?

Reducing waste and the use of plastics is the hardest part of this business. The amount of plastic used in this industry is a bit unsettling. To mitigate waste and plastic use, we offer discounts to customers who use their own containers or return rubber bands and plastic bags to our facility. I’ve contacted my connections in the Hemp industry to find a more sustainable solution for packaging and livestock transport. There must be a better way to do this.

What is the most rewarding part of running this business?

For me, it’s educating people on how they can create and maintain healthy aquariums. We focus on system automation, the latest in filtration and equipment, and what supplements and other natural methods are available to hobbyists when dealing with issues. We want to develop partnerships with organizations that protect our local coral reef habitats and fisheries. As a South Florida native of nearly forty years, I’ve witnessed the negative changes occurring within our local fisheries and coastal habitats. It’s not just frightening but pretty frustrating to see that there are calls to action when no real change is happening at the city, county, and state levels. More needs to be done to ensure our waterways stay clean and our residents have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and serenity that Florida offers. Thoughts and prayers only go so far.

How many employees do you have?

Currently, we have four staff members, including myself and my daughter. She’s a Freshman at FAU. Owl Pride!

What else should people know about your business?

Reefs Edge Aquatics is focused on automation, making it easier to maintain marine and freshwater aquaria. We have a great selection of fish, corals, inverts, supplements/additives, and equipment. The retail store is just the first part of my business plan. I plan to develop education programs for students and possibly get involved in propagating corals to aid in the conservation of coral reefs.

Do you have a mission statement?

Our mission is to educate and provide aquarium hobbyists with the essential tools to maintain a thriving ecosystem using sustainable and environmentally-friendly methods. Y

DEVELOPERS FOR BRAND NEW DOWNTOWN POMPANO UNVEIL COMPETING VISIONS

The City of Pompano Beach unveiled two potential master developers for over 75 acres of property owned by the City and the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency at a public forum last week. The developers, Related Urban Development Group and RocaPoint Partners unveiled their competing plans for the parcels before a packed auditorium in the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

“Not many cities get to build a downtown from scratch,” said Nguyen Tran, Pompano Beach CRA Director, at the forum.

For more than three decades, the City has assembled parcels of land in what will become the new downtown. “This is truly a historic day for the City of Pompano Beach,” said Mayor Rex Hardin.

The plots range in size from .2 to 8.35 acres and do not all connect, making developing the land a creative challenge to which both firms have a solution.

At the forum, the tone of the public input sharply contrasted with the upbeat mood of the city commissioners, who were all present. Residents expressed concerns that their neighborhood would become unrecognizable and that there wouldn’t be a place for them in the future. However, Hardin declared that single-family housing in the surrounding neighborhoods is “sacrosanct.”

More opportunities for public input are planned, but not scheduled as of press time.

RELATED GROUP

One of the state’s largest private real estate developers, the Related Group has been heavily involved in South Florida for decades. They are mainly known for

their luxury apartment building expertise in South Florida; the firm currently has two beachside buildings in Pompano under development.

They have shifted into affordable and workforce housing in recent years and have built, rehabilitated or managed more than 25,000 units, according to their website. And in the Wynwood district in Miami, they saw an opportunity to develop sites that other companies did not envision, working with the City to turn a warehouse district into a vibrant neighborhood. “Arts and culture have a way of bolstering neighborhoods,” said Milo.

Related Urban Development Group has a plan for “placemaking,” said Jon Paul Perez, President of Related Group, the parent company of Related Urban Development Group. With a combination of public art, green spaces, trails, and walkability in mind, Related plans to mainly use the existing plots provided by the City and the CRA.

Related’s vision is divided into three phases, with each phase anticipated to last two years. The first phase centers around “activating” MLK Boulevard, aiming to generate foot traffic, strengthen businesses and foster a sense of community.

The second phase would revamp the civic facilities where City Hall and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center currently reside on Atlantic Boulevard. The third and final phase would develop the southwestern-most parcels of land into a mixed-use town center with commercial, office and residential uses.

Their vision would include 1,368 new housing units, 415,000 square feet of brand new office, civic and commercial spaces, a new hotel and more than six acres of new green space.

ROCAPOINT & PARTNERS

A much younger company with a small, yet impressive portfolio, RocaPoint Partners has shown they are capable of creating impressive and innovative developments that attract desirable tenants, both in terms of businesses and the young professionals that come with them.

Their notable projects include the Professional Golfer’s Association headquarters and Greenville

County Square, a $1.1 billion property redevelopment in downtown Greenville, South Carolina.

Their vision for a new downtown in Pompano Beach resembles a more traditional approach to “activating” an area. The RocaPoint plan would rely heavily on land acquisitions, property swaps, new partnerships and other creative real estate techniques in order to assemble the land needed to execute their vision.

The main visual characteristic of their vision is a massive water feature that would run through the heart of the new downtown leading up to a brand new city hall. They estimate around 1 million cubic feet of stormwater storage will be necessary for the water feature.

In addition to moving city hall, RocaPoint proposes several multi-family buildings with abundant firstfloor space for retail and restaurants. Their vision resembles Mizner Park in Boca Raton; a semi-enclosed retail and living space.

If their vision becomes a reality, RocaPoint plan to build more than 2,000 new multi-family housing units, 275 new hotel rooms, 230,000 square feet of civic space, and more than 685,000 square feet of retail and office space. Y

The shrimp tempura appetizer, while not classically Italian, was light, crispy and a great starter to share. We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The veal is butterflied, pounded thin, stuffed with prosciutto, gorgonzola, and wild mushrooms and topped with a brandy Marsala sauce. If you want something a touch lighter, the grilled salmon was delicate and fresh and prepared with garlic, fresh herbs and a touch of lemon. The chicken franchise was perfectly cooked — the meat was moist
