A PERSONAL NOTE

a

t the outset of 2023, I would be highly remiss if I did not express my deep gratitude to my esteemed clientele for your ongoing support. Thanks to all of you, my career sales now exceed $400 Million… including over $152 Million in sales since 2021. It is my extreme pleasure to act as your trusted advisor in the purchase or sale of million dollar-plus properties.

With the advent of the current buyer’s market, this year promises to be more challenging for sellers. A market that necessitates my extensive buyer connections in feeder markets both at home and abroad, as well as my time-tested multi-media marketing program and proven negotiating acumen. “Julie was amazing to work with. We’ve know her since we moved to Lighthouse Point and when it was time to sell, she was the only realtor we considered. She has incredible local knowledge and went above and beyond in all areas. We can’t get over the professional photos of our house that she had taken! Above all, Julie was incredibly responsive to all questions, texts, calls and emails. We were under a time constraint to sell and Julie pulled out all the stops. In addition, we had already left town around the time of closing - she helped tidy up the house and make sure all was perfect for the walk through. We can’t thank her enough. Selling a house is stressful and it really helped to have someone we could trust to help us through it!” Jasen and Liz G. - Sold waterfront home in Lighthouse Point 2023

CREATIVELY SPEAKING

Spreading Sunshine with Corned Beef and Compliments BY SUSAN ROSSER

F

ifteen minutes before bidding farewell to this world, my father made an unusual request — a corned beef sandwich on rye, accompanied by a Doctor Brown’s cream soda and precisely four pickles from “the deli on 441 north of Yamato Road.” At the age of 95, he was in no pain, but the doctors informed us that his time was winding down. During his last few years, my Dad depended on Uber Eats to deliver his favorite foods, with my sister and I

acting as his culinary conduits. The internet was a mystery to him. And although he was weak at the very end, he was determined to savor one last corned beef sandwich. Unfortunately, he passed away only 15 minutes after making this request. He never got that last sandwich. A year later, following his unveiling, a Jewish ceremony that marks the conclusion of the mourning period, my sister and I chose to commemorate his memory with lunch at Ben’s Kosher Deli, the very place he adored. Corned beef became our tribute. After relishing our sandwiches, pickles, and cream soda, we decided to share our appreciation with the manager, narrating the poignant story of my father’s final gastronomic desire. The manager, genuinely

26

pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

moved, expressed his gratitude. Though tears didn’t quite fill his eyes, he came remarkably close. This encounter spurred a profound realization in me. When things don’t go our way, we often find the time and the means to voice our complaints. Bad service? Speak to the manager. However, we tend to skip expressing our gratitude when things go smoothly. Whether it’s the early arrival of a long-awaited package or the repairman, who not only confirms your appointment but arrives promptly, wearing a smile and efficiently completing the job. Or the doctor who miraculously sees you at your designated appointment time — not 30 minutes later. When faced with subpar restaurant service, my father didn’t hesitate to make his dissatisfaction known. Yet, he was equally swift to shower compliments where they were due. Only a few weeks before his passing, he shuffled from his living room chair to the front door to sincerely praise his landlord. “I like the way you do business,” he said in a voice so earnest it left a sense of gratitude floating in the air. Shortly after his death, the landlord recounted this story to me, emphasizing how generous it was for my father to express such sentiments. So, the next time the clerk at Publix meticulously packs your groceries to your liking (or is it just me who cares about this?), take a moment to express gratitude for a job well done. In a world quick to criticize, let’s not forget the transformative power of a sincere compliment. It might just make someone’s day a little brighter. Y

“The Google of Lighthouse Point” John Lavisky – will be honored as a Keeper in 2024; Ross Licata will Serve as Acting City Administrator John Lavisky, the City of Lighthouse Point’s City Administrator for the last two decades, will be posthumously honored as a Keeper at the city’s Keeper Days Weekend in February. Lavisky, who died Oct. 13 after battling an extended illness, served the city for 28 years, first as a fire chief, then as city administrator. On Nov. 2, at the city’s Heroes’ Memorial, remembrance services were held for Lavisky, 69, who was revered by several city commissioners for his dedication to public service, archival memory and extensive knowledge about the city. “John ran our city for 21 years,” said Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk, “His institutional knowledge about the city and its history was unbelievable. He was really like the Google of Lighthouse Point.” Whenever Van Buskirk went to Lavisky with a question, the Mayor says he was welcomed heartily by Lavisky, who was usually carrying a folder full of material to explain the backstory of any particular issue. “He was the guy you went to,” Van Buskirk said. “You called him, and he would then do his thing as a city administrator, finding out the solution, figuring out the problem, giving you all the backstory.” City commissioner Sandy Johnson echoed Van Buskirk’s sentiment. “There was never a time for me

42

that John did not drop whatever he was doing to assist me in whatever I needed,” she said. “John was such a driving force in our city for so many years. He was hardworking, loyal and totally devoted to his job. The other side of John was the family man, with a loving wife, two daughters and seven adorable grandchildren. Somehow he managed his unconditional commitment to his job and still had time to be husband, dad and grandpa extraordinaire.” In his last months as City Administrator, Mayor Van Buskirk says Lavisky was on fire for pushing through unfinished city business. He wanted to leave a legacy. “We were setting the City of Lighthouse point up for the next 20 years of the future. We were assessing the vulnerability of bridges, paving sea walls, looking at funding initiatives, dredging plans, and all these studies were happening. We were finishing off rewriting the city code, which took about five and a half years,” Van Buskirk said. “I think that’s the reason, or partly why, John, frankly, worked right to the end.” When news of Lavisky’s

John Lavisky

declining health came to light, Van Buskirk says the Keeper Days committee moved to make Lavisky a Keeper immediately. Keeper Days is an annual Lighthouse Point tradition of honoring influential members of the community. The weekend consists of a kick-off dinner, 5K run/walk, parade, concert, fireworks and family sports day. In 2024, alongside Lavisky, Kelly Crittenberger, and Dan and Leslie Vargo will be honored as Keepers. To fill Lavisky’s position, Lighthouse Point police chief Ross Licata will serve as acting city administrator. Licata is no stranger to public service. He has been serving the City since August of 2003 when was sworn in as Police Chief by then Mayor Fred Schorr. Prior to that, he worked for the Delray Beach Police Department for 26 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Palm Beach Atlantic University and is a graduate of the 197th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He also attended the Senior Management Institute for Police at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. “I think Ross is doing an exceptionally good job,” said Van Buskirk. “I think he will continue to do a phenomenal job as our city administrator.” See page 38 for Keeper Days information. Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria Will Launch its Very First Residential Concept in Pompano Beach BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU Waldorf Astoria – the globally-known luxury brand of hotels and resorts by Hilton – will launch a brand-new residential concept in Pompano Beach. Waldorf Astoria Residences, a joint venture by local developers Related Group and Merrimac Ventures in partnership with Hilton, will be a first-class, luxury residential tower consisting of 92 residential units, a café with room service, a poolside dining establishment with private cabanas, jacuzzi, wellness facilities and two dozen boat slips. The two-acre site at 1350 S. Ocean Blvd. is just about a mile south of the Pompano Beach Fisher Family Pier. “We set out to distill the timeless elegance and exclusivity of the Waldorf Astoria brand into a purely residential format,” said Nick Perez, president of Related’s condominium development group. “From the design and architecture to the resident services, we’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure this property fully embodies the Waldorf Astoria brand. There is no compromise in our approach and we are so excited to see how the market reacts to this incredible development.” The tower’s modern design, which features sleek curved edges and eye-catching contemporary details, was spearheaded by Miami-based Nichols Architects. Nichols, the architect group behind the Diplomat Beach Resort and Convention Center, the W South Beach and Miami World Tower, is known for creating stunning buildings that have helped shape Miami’s modern aesthetic. with KORA, BAMO and Enea Landscape Architecture to envision the residences. The building will give nod to the Waldorf Astoria by incorporating some of the brand’s signature resort elements, including Peacock Alley, a feature present at many Waldorf Astoria properties around the world. The idea behind Peacock Alley is to provide a space where, like a colorful peacock, residents can “see and be seen.” The Alley will serve as the village’s main gathering area and feature a soon-to-be-announced food and beverage concept. Brand aficionados will also spot the signature clock inspired by the original at Waldorf Astoria, New York. Inside, the property will feature an assortment of art from the Jorge M. Perez Contemporary Art Collection. Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin said the fact that a luxury, global brand like Waldorf Astoria chose Pompano Beach as its premier location for its new residential concept is telling. “I think it speaks volumes about the success that Pompano Beach is

having by investing in redevelopment, utilizing smart growth and maintaining its character,” Mayor Hardin said. Additional highlights include a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront pool deck, complete with a lap-pool, outdoor bar and dining lounge, summer kitchens and resident cabanas, direct access to 200 linear feet of beachfront and a beachside cafe. The property will also feature a private marina, with 19 slips and the ability to accommodate vessels measuring up to 45 feet. A residents-only spa will have his and her saunas, steam rooms, a fitness center, studio and spin room. “We are thrilled that the reputation and expectations associated with our luxury brand will reach new audiences and buyers with our evolved approach to the real estate space,” said Dino Michael, SVP & global head of Hilton Luxury Brands. Construction of the tower is expected to be completed by late 2026. For more information visit waldorfastoriaresidencespompanobeach.com. Y

Failing Forward BY CRAIG HALEY

I

n my experience, successful people are action-takers. They are willing to roll up their sleeves, get dirty, and work their tails off to make their goals and dreams a reality. And, of course, sometimes they are hugely successful, and other times, they are not. Here is the key difference between successful achievers and ordinary people. When high achievers fail, they look for the reason why. They look for the lesson so they can take that newfound knowledge and try again, this time with a little more wisdom to draw from. As the late legendary author and speaker Zig Ziglar says, “Failure is an event, not a person.” They might have failed in completing that task or goal, but they know they are not a failure. Leadership expert and best-selling author John Maxwell wrote a great book, “Failing Forward.” In that book, he encourages you to redefine what failure means. Tony Robbins says, “Nothing has meaning except for the meaning you give it.” Change what you think failure is in your mind! Instead of focusing on the fact that you tried something and it didn’t work out, focus on what you learned in that process. Focus on the fact that now you know another way that doesn’t work, and that puts you one step

closer to finding the way that does work. Sara Blakely is the founder of Spanx, a billion-dollar clothing company. When she was younger, her father would ask her every day at the dinner table what she tried that day and if she failed or not. This may seem like a peculiar thing for a parent to ask, however, he knew that if she wasn’t trying new things and failing, she would never reach her potential. He knew she needed to regularly step out of her comfort zone and push herself to the limit. Her father defined actual failure as failing to try. “It just took away my fear of trying,” she said. Down and out in a dead-end office-products sales job, Blakely invested all the money she had in the world, $5,000, and set out to create body wear that would work for her. “I must have heard ‘no’ a thousand times,” she said. But she didn’t listen. In addition to the $5,000 she invested, she saved $3,000 (which she didn’t have) on legal

MMA Featherweight Champion, and an ADCC Regional Champion. What most people don’t know was that when he was a Blue Belt (the second belt in the adult belt system), he competed in every tournament he could and never won a single match. This losing streak lasted all three years that he was a Blue Belt. Was he a failure? Hell no! Every time he stepped in the ring, he tried his best and learned. He learned what worked and what didn’t. He learned how to handle pressure situations, and he learned to stay calm in the eye of the storm. He was failing forward! He reminds us often in class that when you lose, it’s never a loss — always a lesson. Remember the children’s book “The Little Engine That Could”? That is not just a children’s book. It is a great life philosophy. Just keep saying to yourself, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.” Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

LEGAL MATTERS

A Revocable Living Trust is Important for Out of State Property BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

A

re you a snowbird returning to Florida for the winter? Some of my clients have their homestead in Florida; others declare their legal residence in another state. In either case, a revocable living trust is very useful to avoid probate in both states. If you are a Florida resident, you can own your homestead property via a revocable living trust without losing your homestead exemption. In addition, you are eliminating the need for probate when you pass away. You can also transfer real estate owned in any other state to your Florida trust. Generally, a Florida lawyer will prepare the revocable living trust and quit claim deed

to transfer the Florida property into the trust. If you are a Florida resident, the lawyer will also prepare a new Florida last will and testament called a pourover will. This provides for the transfer to your trust upon your death of any other assets not in the trust or which do not have beneficiaries already designated. It is a security blanket to cover any assets payable to your estate. For example, if you were killed in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver, your personal representative would be able to settle your estate’s wrongful death claim and “pourover” the proceeds into your trust. If you are not a Florida resident, you can still create a revoca-

ble living trust and execute a quit claim deed to put your Florida property into the trust. Your last will and testament will be done by a lawyer in the state in which you have your legal residence. In addition, that lawyer can prepare a deed to transfer the out-of-state property into the Florida trust. You can also do the trust in your state of residence and have a Florida lawyer transfer your Florida property to that trust. For Canadian citizens, there are possible tax aspects to be considered before you create a Florida trust. These should be discussed with your Canadian accountant or tax attorney. In general, you will have to weigh the tax consequences versus the money and time your heirs would save by avoiding probate in Florida. Another favorable factor in creating a revocable living trust is that you can always amend the trust without having to change the deed. In addition, once you create the trust, you can always buy new properties in any state in the name of the trust. The revocable living trust is recommended by most lawyers over a deed that includes names of other persons, either as joint tenants, tenants in common or a life estate deed. Once another person’s name is on a deed, there are potential risks to you and your property. These include the possibility that the other person may undergo a divorce, bankruptcy, have a judgment against that person, or die before you or with you in a common accident. It may also affect your homestead exemption. All of these risks should be discussed with your attorney before deciding to put someone else’s name on your deed. By contrast, the revocable living trust eliminates those risks, since no other name is on the deed. You simply transfer it from yourself to yourself as trustee of your trust. FINANCIAL FITNESS

The Challenges of Giving and Receiving Family Wealth BY GREG EDWARDS

A

ffluent parents and grandparents often worry about the potential negative impacts of giving significant wealth to their kids. Meanwhile, inheritors can feel overwhelmed by sudden wealth — particularly if their “good fortune” resulted from the death of someone they loved dearly. The first step to navigating wealth transfer among family is to recognize the challenges that inheritors are likely to face so you can be on the lookout for them — whether you’re the giver or the receiver of assets. While every affluent family has its unique characteristics, there are a few challenges that we see cropping up repeatedly among inheritors of wealth. 1. LACK OF FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE. Inheritors and wouldbe inheritors often don’t know much about their own money or money generally. This lack of knowledge can leave them feeling disconnected from their own wealth. What’s more, they may be more susceptible to making poor decisions with their money — or being cheated out of it. 2. BAD SPENDING HABITS. This goes beyond the obvious hedonistic overspending of inherited money that turns an ocean of wealth into a puddle. Poor spending also entails using wealth in ways that fail to generate the results people most want from their spending — which often includes greater happiness and pleasure or a more meaningful life. Regardless of whether they spend a ton or not much at all, the feeling of emptiness that can occur when they realize their spending isn’t meaningfully improving their lives can be a rude awakening. 3. FEELINGS OF GUILT AND LOW SELF-ESTEEM. It’s common to find inheritors saddled with a sense of guilt or anxiety

about money that’s given to them. Sometimes, these feelings stem from inheritors not having a clear, strong sense of who they are and their place in the world prior to receiving assets. These inheritors often feel like they’re defined by money and affluence they did little to deserve — leading to the classic impostor syndrome. 4. PRESSURE TO HAVE A LASTING POSITIVE IMPACT. The opportunity to be a good steward of the wealth we receive can sometimes feel like a burden if the inheritor feels a great deal of pressure to help, coupled with uncertainty about the “right” or “best” way to offer financial resources and support.

ACTION STEPS TO CONSIDER

1. BUILD AND HONE FINANCIAL DECISION-MAKING SKILLS. Chances are an advisor or wealth manager will be in-

volved in managing inherited wealth. Even so, inheritors themselves need to develop some big-picture financial knowledge and an overall sense of ownership of their wealth and

decisions around it. Parents and grandparents can impart knowledge about saving, spending and investing over time. One specific area of focus to consider is the relationship between money and meaning. Encourage heirs to pursue a lifestyle that speaks to their values — both their family’s and their own. 2. BUILD AN IDENTITY FOR YOURSELF. When you’ve got nothing in your life but your wealth, that wealth will define you. Inheritors — ideally well before they receive assets — should be allowed and encouraged to pursue a life that includes dealing with challenges, exploring their interests, discovering what they’re capable of and sacrificing in some way. Working, volunteering, and other “real life” experiences build confidence, identity and self-esteem that can potentially help inheritors avoid feelings of unworthiness or isolation later on. 3. SHARE CHALLENGES WITH PEERS AND OTHERS. In our experience, inheritors will admit that

their wealth creates feelings of isolation and loneliness in them. Their affluence can make it hard for them to relate to or bond with others they encounter in their lives — especially if those people have far less wealth. But such alienation can also occur between inheritors who are very much alike. When families overemphasize privacy concerns or tell their children to hide their fears and concerns from others, it can stunt important social and emotional connections to others that we all need. That, in turn, can potentially lead to depression, substance abuse and other life-altering problems. Therefore, inheritors — and indeed, entire affluent families — need opportunities to communicate, commiserate and share with one another. 4. BE AN ACTIVE STEWARD OF WEALTH.

Stewardship can mean passively sustaining family wealth and status over time, but it also can instill values such as entrepreneurship and active wealth creation in heirs. By encouraging entrepreneurship and engaging in it, families can potentially reduce the risk that heirs will become defined by their inheritance or become unmotivated to pursue their own accomplishments in life. Ultimately, family wealth can be a resource to generate amazing good — just as it can be used in ways that lead to personal stagnation or worse. Givers and receivers of such wealth should put their heads together and work collaboratively to help ensure it’s the former, not the latter. RELATIONSHIPS

How to Stay Connected with Your Partner During the Holidays BY MICHELLE HAYS

C

an you believe this year is almost over? We have been looking at holiday decorations in the stores since October. Doesn’t it feel like we have been preparing for the holidays for months? I feel that way, and frankly, I am tired of it. No wonder the holidays can put a strain on our relationships. So, what can we do about it? Obviously, we have no control over when stores decorate or when holiday music starts playing on November 1st. However, we do have control over what we do to stay connected with our partners during this magical time of year. Here are some suggestions:

Say no to back-to-back holiday parties. Say no to the FOMO (fear of missing out!) Say no to making every gift look like it belongs in a Macy’s window display. (That was a difficult one for me. In my mind, it was part of the gift. Now I wrap one lovely gift for each person and tie the others together in a stack with one big ribbon!) Say no to decorating your entire home! Another tough one, but I can assure you that you will be delighted when it comes time to put everything away. Say no to last-minute power shopping and shop locally instead. Get the idea?

Tune in for Holiday TV Specials When was the last time you

watched your favorite holiday TV special or movie you loved as a kid? Why not watch it together with your spouse? Or watch one that you have never seen before! No matter what holiday you celebrate, you can still enjoy Hanukkah or Christmas specials and movies. They are designed to uplift your spirit! My favorite is “The Year Without a Santa Claus.” Have you ever seen it? Heat Miser and Snow Miser sing and dance, praising the elements of rain and snow. It’s pretty entertaining and you will find yourself singing along! Go ahead, cuddle on the couch together, and remember the feeling of being a kid.

Slow Down Instead of running yourself ragged, take better care

Reset Your Expectations In our minds, we tend to create this

picture-perfect scene of the holidays, and sadly, our expectations rarely match that reality. Why? Because despite our efforts, we just can’t do everything, and things simply don’t always go as planned. Don’t get lost in expecting to have “the best holiday” ever. Have realistic expectations.

Say No Yes, the holidays are about connection, celebrating, giving, and receiving. But do you tend to overextend yourself during this time of year? Do you put pressure on yourself to make everything perfect? Here are a few little secrets that can make your holiday season not only less stressful but much more meaningful.

64

of yourself and tune in to your spouse. Stress reduces our ability to be patient, loving, and merry. In the whirlwind of getting things done, we may neglect ourselves and our partners. No one wants to feel resentful or taken for granted. Scheduling (yes, you read that correctly) downtime will have you both feeling calmer and connected. Let’s rebel against this hectic holiday lifestyle, for goodness’ sake.

Count Your Blessings You have captured a fantastic

chronological story about the last year of your life. Where? On your cell phone! Go ahead, take some time and slowly scroll through your treasure trove of pictures and videos from this past year. Nothing like the gift of perspective. It’s for you! Allow yourself the pleasure of being reminded of all the people, places, and experiences that were a blessing in your life this year. May your holiday celebrations be filled with much love, the most precious gift of all. Y

CREATIVELY COOKING

Cheesy Croissant Breakfast Casserole Ingredients

6 or 7 croissants, split in half lengthwise (quantity depends on croissant size) 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the baking dish 2-3 leeks (white part only), thinly sliced (see note) 12 ounces pancetta, cut into lardons 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh sage 8 large eggs 3 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 8 ounces Gruyère, grated (about 2 cups) 1¼ teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper Fresh chives, thinly sliced for serving In the world of croissant-centric breakfast casseroles, some recipes call for stale croissants, claiming they absorb liquids better. However, let’s not sacrifice flavor for texture. Pop the croissants in a hot oven for 5 to 10 minutes to impart a touch of toasty goodness.

Preparation

POMPANO BEACH 68

pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the croissants on a baking sheet cut side up, and toast in the oven for about 5 to 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. Allow them to cool, and then tear them into large pieces (about two bites worth). Keep the oven on. Lightly oil a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. In a medium pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat and add the pancetta. Cook until the pancetta is crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the leeks to the pan and cook until softened about 5 minutes. Add the sage and stir to combine. Remove from the heat. In a large bowl, combine the croissants, leek mixture and pancetta. In another bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cream, 1½ cups Gruyere, salt and pepper. Whisk to combine thoroughly. Pour the croissant mixture into the prepared baking dish. Pour the egg mixture into the baking dish. I like a few croissants to stick out above the liquid so they get crispy, but that is a personal choice. Feel free to push them down so they are completely covered for a more homogeneous casserole. Scatter the remaining Gruyere over the top and place the casserole into the 350-degree oven. Bake for about 45 minutes. The casserole should be firm and not soupy. Remove from oven and let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Top with chopped chives. Note: Leeks can have a lot of sand in them. Be sure to clean well.

Grants made possible by our FUNDHOLDERS support career readiness, seniors, the arts, mental health, cancer research, the environment, animal rescue, education and so much more. By enlisting the Community Foundation’s philanthropic expertise, financial stewardship and ability to pool resources, you amplify the impact of your giving. In the pages ahead you will also see how, through the POWER OF ENDOWMENT, Broward residents can count on life-changing support from the Community Foundation for generations to come. Holiday for Gifts Wine Lovers

BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

80

pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

I love talking about gifts people can give to others who like wine. It allows me to consider and research the wide range of things that can be fun about wine. There are simple, often useful, things that don’t cost very much. And, of course, many things can cost quite a lot — hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Most of my suggestions range from under $10 to about $500. Good wine is nearly always a great gift. There are almost endless choices in every price range — a help as well as an obstacle. However, there are plenty of terrific non-wine gifts, such as wine-themed paper napkins, gadgets for removing corks, glasses and decanters for serving wine, and appliances and devices for storing wine and tasting it without removing the cork. There are also books, magazine subscriptions, classes and tastings, and wine clubs to help learn about and experience different wines. Wine should be about fun and enjoyment, so whatever wine-related gifts you give, that’s the goal. DECEMBER 2023 | pointpubs.com

81

The Gift of Wine The most obvious gift to give someone who enjoys wine is good wine. Figure to spend $20 and up for a standard .75-liter bottle of wine unless you know for sure a wine that costs less is one you, the recipient, or people you trust like a lot. I know, “it’s the thought that counts” when giving a gift. But consider that better wines generally cost more because, among other things, they’re generally made with better grapes, a critical factor in making fine wine. That’s not a guarantee of quality or that your recipient will enjoy or appreciate the gift. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but believe me, you’re more likely to get a good bottle of wine when you spend more than $15 than for a bottle. A nice compromise is to give a half bottle. Many excellent wines come in this size at about 60% of the price of a regular bottle.

What to Give

What kinds of wines make good gifts? I have two schools of thought on this topic. One is to play it safe and stick with wines you like, you know the recipient enjoys, or that have special meaning. For instance, the wine could be one that evokes or celebrates a fond memory, like a trip, wedding, or other happy occasion. The wine also could be a specific type, style, winemaker, or vintage the recipient would like but wouldn’t ordinarily buy because of its cost or limited availability. The latter might include a leading cabernet sauvignon from California’s Napa Valley, a fine Bordeaux or Rhone red or special Champagne from France, or a premium Italian red such as amarone, barolo or brunello di montalcino. These start at about $40 and go up in price from there.

Tried and True

If you prefer to play it safe with generally less expensive popular wines, like pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc, I suggest considering well-crafted wines from smaller producers rather than big-name, mass-produced wines. For pinot noir and chardonnay, hundreds of smaller producers in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and California’s Sonoma County and central coast regions make excellent wines. Another option for affordable chardonnay is chablis, made in the most northern section of Burgundy France. It’s typically drier, less oaky, and more austere than most California chardonnays. For sauvignon blanc, look for wines from France’s Loire Valley, particularly sancerre, or from New Zealand. Other popular red wines include malbec from Argentina, zinfandel from California, chianti classico from Italy, or rioja from Spain. I suggest buying

82

pointpubs.com | LIGHTHOUSE POINT

What About Wine Baskets? MAYBE NOT

Wine baskets from gift catalogs seem overpriced for what they are, often including private-label wines of questionable quality and processed cheese. Instead find an excellent local wine shop where you can work with the merchant to pick quality wines and match them with cheese, charcuterie, and crackers.

chianti and rioja that say riserva or reserva on the label; they’re aged longer in wood, resulting in wines that tend to be richer and softer and have more intense fruit, herbal, and earthy aromas and flavors. Another popular, reasonably priced, and often underrated white wine is pinot grigio or pinot gris. This wine can make an excellent gift when well chosen. My favorites come from the Alsace region in France and the northeast Italy mountain foothills regions of Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia-Giulia. These regions also make lighter but delightful pinot blanc wines made from the white relative of pinot noir grapes as well as delectably dry versions of Riesling.

Wines for the More Adventurous

My other school of thought for gifting wine is to give a wine that may be a little out of the ordinary for your recipient, wine that’s adventuresome but still likely to please. I admit this kind of gift might work best for wine lovers with broad tastes or who are open to tasting different kinds of wines. In this category, one of my top recommendations is priorat. Typically a blend of syrah, grenache, cabernet sauvignon, and other grapes, Priorat is from a small mountainous region by the same name in southeastern Spain. These wines are remarkable. They’re consistently delicious, varying from medium to full-bodied,

with interesting fruit and other flavors. These wines also are notable for their remarkable texture and balance of acidity and tannin. They sell in the $25-100 range.

Uncommon and Impressive Reds

Another favorite of mine that sells in the $15-30 range is cannonau, the name for grenache on Italy’s island of Sardinia. Good cannonau is a serious red that’s easy-drinking with red fruit, spice, floral and earthy flavors and aromas. Syrah (shiraz in Australia), also makes a great gift. Good syrah is a rich, silky smooth red with dark fruit and peppery flavors. Look for syrah from California’s Santa Barbara County or from the Northern Rhone in France, such as crozes-hermitage and St.- Joseph. These typically sell in $20-60 range.

Don’t Forget Dessert

Don’t rule out dessert wines such as French sauternes, German riesling auslese, Hungarian tokaji aszú, or Portuguese vintage Port or aged tawny Port. I think Tawny Port is a beautiful gift. Those labeled as aged between 10 and 20 years generally are usually priced from $20-50. They can be enjoyed now and have a beautiful golden brown hue and irresistible sweet, nutty flavors. Also, once opened, they can be refrigerated for a few weeks before losing their original flavors and character.

The Gift of Bubbles BEYOND CHAMPAGNE

If you’d like to give someone sparkling wine but don’t want to spend $45 and up for French Champagne, there are many tasty alternatives. Cremant is the name for sparkling wine made in France outside champagne in Alsace, Burgundy, and other regions. Many winemakers in California, Oregon, and New Mexico also make many wonderful sparklers, but figure to spend $15 and up for good quality and finer bubbles. Cava from Spain is also made in the same style as Champagne but generally costs significantly less.

Useful Non-Wine Gifts for Wine Lovers Besides wine, there are loads of useful wine-related gifts. You can find all these things at wine, cooking, and housewares stores as well as numerous websites. Several that have wide selections of wine-related items are Williams-Sonoma, Crate & Barrel, Sur La Table, IWA, Wine Enthusiast, Wine. com, and Amazon, among others. I’ll start with glassware and then finish with some suggestions regarding books, classes, and wine club subscriptions.

How to Shop

As for buying wine, you can shop locally in Florida or online. If you know your recipient’s specific American wine preferences, consider buying six or 12 bottles directly from its winery. Visit the winery’s website or call directly. The website will usually list the available wines, their prices, and shipping details. If you’re looking for something you don’t see, such as earlier vintages, ask about their availability. Also, many wineries provide discounts or free shipping for quantity purchases. You might not save anything buying direct, but you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing there might not be another way to buy certain wines that are made in small quantities or sell out quickly and seldom appear in retail stores.

Corkscrews

Does your recipient own a winged corkscrew — the goofy-looking contraption with side handles that rise up as its drill-like bit screws into the cork? Give that person a better tool for opening wine! The least expensive ($10-30) and often the best gadget for removing wine corks is the common “waiter’s friend” or “sommelier knife.” About the size and weight of a pocketknife, this simple device has a helix-shaped steel “worm” that snakes into the cork. With practice, it works quickly and reliably. Inexpensive ones have stainless steel or plastic handles that often come in many colors. Fancier models may have wood, bone, stone, or ivory handles. Most have a small pullout blade for removing foil cork covers. Make sure the arm that braces against the lip of the bottle at a right angle to the handle has a flexible joint so corks can be leveraged out in two easy strokes instead of one longer, harder motion. Also, a Teflon-coated worm turns into corks more smoothly. The Screwpull corkscrew is another marvelous invention. The original manual version, now made by Le-Crueset, is nearly infallible. It uses a very long, coated worm that goes through corks easily and raises most of them smoothly as you turn. More popular now and practically effortless are levered or cylinder-shaped battery devices using the same principle, of which there are many brands. Yet another type of opener, especially for older wines, is the small, inexpensive, but indispensable “ah-so” or butler’s friend. An Ah-so is sometimes the best and only tool for cleanly removing stuck, damaged, broken, or fragile corks. The Ah-so has a holding handle with two slightly curved prongs that store in a short sheath. The prongs get shimmied between the cork and bottleneck, which then pull the cork out by twisting and pulling. There’s also a device called the Durand corkscrew that combines screwpull and ah-so features. It retails for a hefty $125 but could be just the right gadget for those who enjoy treasured old bottles of Italian barolo, French Bordeaux, or Napa Valley cab.

Wine Glassware

When giving glasses, remember that still wines, regardless of their color, are more appetizing and enjoyable when sipped from glasses that make them visually appealing and have a shape wide, high, and angled enough to swirl without spilling. Swirling helps wine aerate and accentuate aromas and flavors. Generally, glasses with larger bowls are more suitable for red wine, although many full-bodied white wines, like chardonnay, often benefit from being served in such glasses. For sparkling wine, tall, narrow, flute-shaped glasses work nicely. Their shape evokes celebration and reduces the surface area from which precious bubbles escape. A set of harder-to-find, shorter, smaller-bowled glasses makes a nice gift for dessert and aperitif wines. Wine glasses with or without stems are a matter of personal preference, although stemmed glasses seem easier to swirl. Either way, wine’s visual qualities show best served in clear, colorless glasses made of quality glass or crystal. Most brands now make multiple shapes, but there’s nothing wrong with buying a set of pleasing 12-16-ounce wine glasses that can be used to serve any wine. If you’re prepared to spend more than $50 for a pair of wine glasses, Riedel and Zalto are two prestigious brands. Schott-Zweisel and Spiegelgau are well-known brands that make excellent wine glasses for less than that. For budget wine glasses, Libby is a reliable brand.

Preservers

Inexpensively preserving wine after opening has been the Holy Grail for wine lovers who want only a glass or two of a special or pricey bottle of wine and then hope to enjoy the rest days, weeks, or even months or years later. The simplest but least effective preservers are inexpensive slit-top rubber stoppers made by VacuVin and others that come with a hand-held pump for sucking air out of opened wine bottles. A more effective method is spraying pressurized, inert, climate-friendly gases, like argon, into an opened bottle during re-corking. The gas displaces air in the bottle. I’ve used Private Select Wine Preserver, which comes in feather-light aerosol-sized canisters filled with an FDA-approved mixture of argon and other gases that can fill over several dozen partly full bottles. It sells online and in some wine stores for about $10 a can. The most effective devices remove modest amounts of wine from uncorked bottles and simultaneously replace the space left with safe gases that help preserve remaining wine for either weeks or years. Coravin is the most popular. It’s hand-held devices sell for $100-500. Coravin’s technology inserts a hypodermic-like needle through wine corks to extract wine and inject preserving gas, all without removing the cork. Other preservers, like WineKeeper, will enable the fortunate recipient to dispense and preserve multiple

bottles of wine, providing an ever-ready choice of wines for you and your guests. Multi-bottle dispensers/preservers, like those in fancy wine bars, can easily cost $2,000 or more.

Totes, Carriers, and Luggage

Basic wine totes are tall open-topped bags made of cloth, leather, or synthetic materials that hold one or two 750 ml wine bottles. Fancier carriers close and may have insulated compartments. There are also larger bags, even outing-ready backpacks, that come with glasses, corkscrews, and other paraphernalia, along with room for a bottle or two and even food. And, yes, for serious, wine-loving travelers, you can buy luggage with specially made inserts for holding up to 12 wine bottles. They cost between $75 and $400.

Aerators

Pouring wine through an aerator can help expose wine to more air than when poured straight from its bottle. There are many different kinds and brands, generally selling between $15 and $50. Advocates believe they can help bring out flavors sooner and may help particularly tannic wines like young, bold cabernet sauvignon taste less astringent. However, they won’t magically make bad wine taste like good wine or make ageworthy young wine taste like it might have many years later.

TOP LEFT Coravin wine preserver LEFT 5-bottle

Decanters

Wine decanters also make lovely gifts. Elegant ones make wine look appealing while aerating it quickly. Some are simply shaped, and some have wide, flat bottoms with narrow necks or exotic, sometimes absurd shapes. Again, clear, uncolored glass or crystal shows wine best. Anticipate spending over $40. Throwing in a flexible bottlebrush will be much appreciated. DECEMBER 2023 | pointpubs.com

Books, magazines and more classes costing between $100 and $300. Another interesting offering is through Master Class; it features recorded talks by wine critic James Suckling. Notably, Jancis Robinson has recorded wine classes in partnership with the BBC. Other popular wine classes are available from Udemy.com, The Great Courses, and the Wine School of Philadelphia.

Wine Books

When it comes to books, among my favorites are several by Jancis Robinson, arguably the best of all living wine writers. The shortest is her 112-page “24-Hour Wine Expert.” Others include the classic “How to Taste: A Guide to Enjoying Wine,” the encyclopedic Oxford Companion to Wine, and the beautiful and amazing “World Atlas of Wine” (co-authored with Hugh Johnson). Hugh Johnson also writes the annually updated “Wine Pocket Book.” Another guide is Madeline Puckette and Justin Hammack’s award-winning and easy-to-use “Wine Folly: The Master Guide.” It gives rundowns on dozens of grapes and wines, how they taste and smell, and food pairing suggestions. Another invaluable resource is Karen McNeil’s “The Wine Bible,” a nondenominational tour of the wine world. Three newer books that buck wine-snobery are “The New Wine Rules” by John Bonné, “Wine Simple: A Totally Approachable Guide” by sommelier Aldo Sohm and Christine Mulke and “Wine for Normal People” by Elizabeth Schneider. My pick for funniest wine book is “Big Macs & Burgundy: Wine Pairings for the Real World” by Vanessa Price. Anyone for glass of sauvignon blanc with a bag of Cheetos? I recommend two wine course books. A classic is Kevin Zraly’s regularly updated “Windows on the World Complete Wine Course.” More recent is Marnie Old’s very differently organized “Wine: A Tasting Course.”

Classes and Tastings

There are countless options for wine classes and tastings. Local options often are sponsored by local wine shops, restaurants, or clubs. Additionally, there are numerous online classes given by sommeliers and other wine experts, some of which may lead to certifications. They seem to cost from $90 to $500. Napa Valley Wine Academy is among the most popular and offers

86

The Magazines

Finally, a wine magazine subscription is a fantastic way to get the latest information about wine, including wine ratings and articles about different wine regions, winemakers, wine-related travel, and so forth. The leader is Wine Spectator followed by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. These and other wine publishers, including Robert Parker Wine Advocate and Vinous, operate paid and free website content.

Wine Club Subscriptions

Wine clubs typically send subscribers curated selections of wines at regular intervals for set amounts that vary depending on the type and amount of wine sent. They can be a wonderful gift for people who enjoy and want to learn more about wine and won’t mind having other people, hopefully very knowledgeable people, pick wines for them. I’ve never had a wine club subscription, although I know numerous people who have. I enjoy shopping for wine in local stores and occasionally buy directly from winemakers. For many, shopping for wine can be stressful, confusing, and unsatisfying. They often end up with the same wine each time or perhaps wine promoted by the store that they end up not liking. There are dozens of wine club options. Good wine clubs generally give members choices in the number, kinds, and price points of the wines they’ll get. Some clubs also provide flexibility in shipment frequency, such as every month or quarter. Most seem to offer significant discounts or credits toward the first shipment. Monthly membership costs after that range widely. Most also allow members to end their memberships without penalty, but it’s important to read membership conditions carefully before signing up. Both the New York Times Wirecutter series and the New York Post recently reviewed wine clubs. They’re revealing findings are accessible online. Have fun shopping, and let us know what wine gifts you gave or got. Y

And to wash it all down, they have about a zillion craft beer options and a good wine list too. 4610 N. Federal Highway, 754-307-5034 $$-$$$ Rocca Trattoria. ITALIAN Rocco is a small and intimate neighbor-

hood place serving classic Italian fare. The shrimp tempura appetizer, while not classically Italian, was light, crispy and a great starter to share. We were suitably impressed with the flavor bomb that is the veal chop valdostano. The veal is butterflied, pounded thin, stuffed with prosciutto, gorgonzola, and wild mushrooms and topped with a brandy Marsala sauce. If you want something a touch lighter, the grilled salmon was delicate and fresh and prepared with garlic, fresh herbs and a touch of lemon. The chicken franchise was perfectly cooked — the meat was moist and tender, and the coating was light — just enough to soak up the lemony goodness of the sauce. 2014 E Sample Road, 954-876-1733 $$

LAST RESORT

A Weekend Getaway to the Space Coast

BY DANIELLE CHARBONNEAU

D

riving down North Atlantic Ave. in Cocoa Beach, one might notice the colorful, carved Polynesian tikis, grass thatch roof and Hawaiianinspired architecture of the Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort. This newly reimagined beachside destination immediately evokes the laid-back Aloha vibes of a tropical getaway; but wander inside the courtyard of this U-shaped resort and your family will find even more to love. An enormous lazy river with raining tiki arches, plus an energetic water park with slides, water-spouting palm trees, squirting surf boards and play places, invite families to come splash around. A bar serving exotic frozen cocktails and tropical refreshments is equally inviting. All the rooms at the Westgate are two-bedroom suites (one room with a king bed, and one with two twins), two full bathrooms, a living room, dining table and fully stocked kitchen. This allows you to cook some meals at home if you so desire, and create a home-awayfrom-home. Just behind the resort is the beautiful ocean; there, families will have access to the resort’s private beach bed lounges and a secluded walkway to the sand. During the day, this peaceful beach is wonderful for sunbathing and sand-castle-building. At night, this very sand attracts crowds of people to watch SpaceX rockets launch from the Kennedy Space Center just a few miles away. Witnessing the glowing trail of a rocket as it ascends into outer space is an unforgettable experience not to be missed; so check the launch schedule and try to time your trip right. Be sure to also visit the Kennedy Space Center for a full day of immersive experiences teaching you and your kids about the history of Apollo missions, NASA and space exploration. Y The Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort is located at 3550 North Atlantic Ave.Cocoa Beach, FL 32951. Resort Phone: 321-7832230. WestgateCocoaBeach.com

Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the rst phone call, you will nd my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient.
