Superior Results for Hip and Knee Surgery Our Caring, Patient-Centered Practice

My practice combines world-class orthopaedic care in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient is treated with respect, the way I would want my family to be cared for. From the first phone call, you will find my team 100 percent engaged in addressing your needs. I care for people in their 80s and 90s who refuse to relinquish their independence and opt for surgery to regain an active lifestyle. I also treat patients in their 20s and 30s who desire an improved quality of life and want to feel “normal” again.

Safely Going Home the Day of Surgery

My emphasis on preempting and preventing pain after surgery has been a game changer. Patients walk the day of surgery and the vast majority of my patients go straight home the afternoon of their hip or knee replacement surgery. This requires coordinated pre-operative planning and detailed communication between my staff and the patient. “Dr. Leone put my body back together. I was a long-time runner and now at 83-years-old all my pain is finally gone!”

~Tracey M, full and partial knee replacement patient

“I will forever be grateful to Dr. Leone and his amazing staff at Holy Cross. I can honestly say Dr. Leone is the most kind, patient, incredible doctor I have ever met. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

~Liyah, 32 years old, total hip replacement patient

A Love Letter to Restaurants BY SUSAN ROSSER

My Dearest Restaurants, I would like to start with an apology. For years, I took you for granted. How silly to think I could merely pop in whenever it suited me. That you would always be there for me. What a fool I was. Just days before the lockdown last spring, I recall friends asking if my husband and I would like to meet for an impromptu dinner at a neighborhood joint. I was tired from a busy work week and declined. Oh, how I regret this decision. For months after that, I mostly lived without you—relegated only to take-out and delivery. Those meals were a welcome break from the constant cycle of loading and unloading the dishwasher—not to mention the actual cooking. Nevertheless, I missed the experience of dining out—of being in the moment. I took for granted the energy that surrounded me as I devoured a plate of pasta in a roomful of perfect strangers. I know people often consider universities, schools and religious institutions to be the cornerstones of our communities. And while those are undoubtedly crucial, after the year we just had, I would add restaurants to that list. Restaurants are where we go to meet friends and business associates. It’s where we take a first date. And of course, we celebrate birthdays, graduations and anniversaries at our favorite spots. ABOVE Lunch to go— ahi tuna and salmon poké bowls from The Poké Company in Pompano Beach Mrs. Kossenfloffer for Lighthouse Point magazine

24 pointpubs.com •

POINT! PUBLISHING

But my dear restaurants, it wasn’t only the big and celebratory dinners I longed for. I missed the tiny and seemingly trivial experiences that add up to something wondrous. I missed breadbaskets. I missed being greeted at the door, walking beside the host with enthusiastic anticipation. Where would we be seated? Would we get the coveted window table? A table near the bar? I missed casually striking up a conversation with complete strangers while we waited for a table. I missed eating at the bar—when the bartender lays down a folded cloth napkin, signaling the imminent arrival of dinner. I missed the moment the door opens, and a rush of warm and humid South Florida air wafts past, beckoning a new arrival. And while I love to try new places and new foods, I also cherish being a regular. When a server knows how I take my coffee or when I am greeted by name—well, that counts for a lot. Let’s face it, we all like to feel special from time to time. And perhaps no effort accomplishes that as well as friendly service at a neighborhood eatery. I am a superstitious person, so I don’t want to jinx anything— but as we find ourselves hopefully on the verge of some semblance of normalcy—I, for one, cannot wait to simply eat out whenever the mood strikes. A relaxing or even raucous Saturday night dinner girds me for the week ahead. And I’ve missed it all, from the humble trip to the classic diner for scrambled eggs, toast and coffee all the way to lobster fra diavolo and everything in between. Just as a delicious home-cooked dinner connects us with family and friends, a meal at a restaurant connects us to our community. We are not only what we eat; we are also where we eat.

Lighthouse Point Breaks Ground On Its New Community Center City officials, residents and other guests gathered on the morning of March 5 for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new community center that will be constructed at Dan Witt Park. “I’m very excited about getting this project off the ground,” said Lighthouse Point Mayor Glenn Troast. Troast said it had been a collaborative effort. He thanked the city commissioners, Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, Kaufman Lynn Construction, and Lighthouse Point resident William Gallo, of Gallo Herbert Architects, who was hired by the city to oversee the construction. He also thanked the Recreation Committee and all the city boards that contributed to the project by providing their input. “I’d like to particularly thank the residents of the city for approving the bond issue that allows us to do this,” said Troast. In 2018, Lighthouse Point voters approved a $16.5 million bond that is being used to fund five projects: the new community center; a new fire

The Parks and Recreation Department offices will be at the northwest corner of the building, which provides staff a vantage point to monitor the playing fields and the parking lot. “During this pandemic, we see how important parks and recreation are,” said Lighthouse Point Parks and Recreation Director Becky Word. “This is where we want kids to be able to come and have a safe place to learn, to play, to fellowship, >>>

<<< have community, and just really be in the heart of the city.” The building will also serve as an auxiliary emergency operations center for first responders during events such as hurricanes. The building is designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The new community center ties in some of the same Anglo-Caribbean design elements used for the new fire station that is currently under construction on Sample Road, such as a stucco finish, a silver metal roof and a neutral color palette. The community center’s front entrance and lobby will be facing north, toward the basketball courts. Construction of the 8,100-squarefoot community center is expected to be completed in January 2022. The guaranteed maximum price the city will pay for the community center is $2,527,189. Also at the groundbreaking was John Trudel, Lighthouse Point’s first Parks and Recreation Director, who served in that role from 1974 until 2015. Trudel said there had always been talk of building a community center, and “finally, it’s come.” “Now we’re going to have a place for our younger people, as well as the adults, to meet and do some recreational activities,” said Trudel. “We’re looking forward to a good time.” Officer Paul McCormick, the city’s community policing officer, said the new community center is going to be “a big step forward in helping to keep our children safe, especially from the weather.” There will be enough indoor space 28 pointpubs.com •

for a large number of children participating in city programs and others at the park to seek protection during lightning storms or emergencies. The new community center will replace the park’s old Civitan building, which opened in 1972, and was built by members of the community who belonged to the Civitan Club, a service club. The

Civitan building was demolished in February of this year. “We hope to give you the very best community center that money can buy, that talent can produce and that will serve the community for a very long time,” said Michael Kaufman, CEO of Kaufman Lynn Construction. Kaufman noted that a number of the key subcontractors chosen to work on the building are Lighthouse Point residents, whose companies are CSR Heavy Construction, Skyline Steel, DAB Mechanical, Absolute Fire Protection and Electraserve. “We really think it’s part of our job to have the community involved in their community building,” said Kaufman. “This is the most significant project in the city in decades,” said Commissioner Earl Maucker. “It’s the centerpiece of community activity and will be part of the city’s character for decades to come.” Y

Lighthouse Point Post Office Targeted By Possible Mail Theft Again On Oct. 27 of last year, two men from Opa-Locka were arrested for stealing mail from one of the blue drive-thru mailboxes at the Lighthouse Point Post Office. The post office had been the subject of a proliferation of thefts that began in earnest at the end of 2019. The cases involved checks that were stolen from the outside mailboxes – using a method called “fishing” – then either fraudulently altered or duplicated, and cashed. Since the arrest of the two suspects last October, there have been no reports of mail theft from any of the post office’s four outside mailboxes, according to the Lighthouse Point Police Department.

The goal is to prevent thieves from using homemade devices to “fish” pieces of mail from the drop-off boxes – often an adhesivecovered weight attached to a rope. However, at the end of February of this year, suspects entered the lobby of the Lighthouse Point Post Office and forced entry into a door that gave them access to mail placed in the built-in outgoing dropoff slot in the lobby. According to Mail Fraud Team Leader Blanca Alvarez, of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Miami Division, it is not known if any mail was stolen, and no arrests have been made. The incident took place sometime LEFT The outgoing drop-off slot in the post office lobby.

The three mailboxes with pulldown handles have been outfitted with anti-theft devices that allow them to open only partially, and a mailbox that already had a narrow opening, did not need to be modified.

between 8pm on Feb. 27 and 7am on Feb. 28. The Lighthouse Point Police Department advises anyone who used the drop-off slot in the lobby during that time frame to consider canceling any checks that were

mailed, and to monitor the accounts associated with the check for any unauthorized activity. Alvarez said that If the mail is believed to have been stolen, a mail theft complaint should be filed with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service – even if it is reported to the police department – by calling 877-8762455 or by filing a complaint online at uspis.gov. Alvarez advised that, when dropping off mail, it’s best to hand it directly to a post office employee. Outdoor collection boxes should be used during the day if mail is deposited before the final pickup, but not overnight or over the weekend. Alvarez noted that mail theft is a federal offense punishable by up to five years in federal prison and fines. Criminal investigations into the February and October incidents are ongoing. The Lighthouse Point Police Department is working in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on the investigations. The incident in October garnered national attention because it happened shortly before the November election, and among the pieces of stolen mail were two election ballots. The two suspects arrested in the case – 28-year-old Junior Alexander Cabral and 20-year-old Vladimir Cuevas Cabral – have been charged with counts of Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud, Bank Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft and Possession of Stolen Mail. Their trial is set to take place sometime this May at the U.S. District Court Southern District of Florida in Fort Lauderdale. Y

Lighthouse Point Seeks To Retain Its Authority To Regulate Vacation Rentals At its meeting on March 9, the Lighthouse Point City Commission unanimously approved a resolution expressing its strong opposition to state legislation proposed in the House and Senate that would strip away local authority for regulating vacation rentals. The resolution states that the city has experienced significant issues with vacation rentals, such as their use for house parties, excessive noise and garbage, and street parking, all of which occur in a frequency greater than standard residential uses.

In 2015, the city enacted an ordinance that created and implemented land development regulations to regulate transient rentals, including vacation rentals. The ordinance has successfully enabled the city to address and remedy neighborhood nuisances caused by vacation rentals. The proposed state legislation — House Bill 219 and Senate Bill 522 — would preempt the city's ordinance and “virtually eliminate any ability of the city to regulate vacation rentals,” according to the resolution. The two bills would eliminate the

However, local governments were authorized to inspect vacation rentals for compliance with state building and fire prevention codes and issue licenses or permits.

state of Florida, not just from the city in which they're located. The license comes from the Division of Hotels and Restaurants and requires vacation rentals to follow the hotel industry's rules, such as having a fire extinguisher and a map showing the exits. If the proposed legislation is approved, and the city can't be involved, Johnson questioned how the state would know if these residences followed the rules. “I don’t understand the reasoning, if nobody’s going to inspect them,” said Johnson. Mayor Glenn Troast said "that is exactly the reason" the City of Lighthouse Point passed an ordinance in 2015. The city developed the ordinance along with the local realtor's board. “Prior to passing our ordinance, when we had complaints about vacation rentals, and we turned them over to the Division of Hotels and Restaurants, they refused to enforce their own rules,” said Troast. “There is no reason to believe they will start enforcing their rules on vacation rentals if we lose our ability to regulate them. It’s a huge safety hazard.” Commissioner Kyle Van Buskirk said that undoing the city's 2015 ordinance would definitely be “disheartening.” The proposed legislation would also preempt the regulation of advertising platforms to the state. The resolution passed by the Lighthouse Point City Commission urged all members of the Florida Legislature to oppose the adoption of HB 219 and SB 522. It states that, through the proposed bills, the Florida >>>

A New Publix Is Coming to Shoppers Haven

A new Publix is planned for the anchor space at Shoppers Haven, the shopping center located at the southwest corner of North Federal Highway and Sample Road in Pompano Beach. Winn-Dixie formerly occupied the 52,000-squarefoot space Pompano Beach Commissioner Rhonda Eaton of District 2, where Shopper’s Haven is located, briefly mentioned the Publix during a recent Pompano Beach City Commission meeting. When asked about the project, Christopher Partridge of Partridge Equity Group, which owns and manages Shoppers Haven, said he is under a non-disclosure agreement and hopes to provide details in May.

Plans submitted to the City of Pompano Beach show that Partridge Equity Group is proposing to redevelop the grocery store space as a Publix, as well as enhance the facades of the entire shopping center “to create a more modern and inviting appearance.” The owner is also proposing to update the existing parking areas to enhance circulation and accessibility. There is already a Publix in Venetian Isle Shopping Center on Federal Highway, which is almost directly across from Shoppers Haven, and another Publix in The Shoppes At Beacon Light, a few miles south of Shoppers Haven. A community relations manager for Publix Super Markets was asked if the two existing stores would remain

open, and replied that “we do not have any information to share about these stores at this time.” In addition to a complete renovation, the Shoppers Haven plans include adding a six-story multi-family residential building, called Vista Clara Communities at Pompano Beach, to the south end of the property. According to Partridge, the proposed residential building would feature up to 250 luxury rental apartments at market rates. An Outback Steakhouse is being built on a Shoppers Haven outparcel along Federal Highway, just south of the Walgreens at Sample Road. Construction got underway last month. The steakhouse Is expected to open in August 2021. Y

Keep Your Foot on the Gas

AVOID COMFORT ZONES

BY CRAIG HALEY EVERYONE READING THIS ARTICLE HAS ENJOYED A FAIR SHARE OF VICTORIES AND GOALS. THEY MAY HAVE BEEN ATHLETIC, BUSINESS, FINANCIAL, OR IN ANOTHER AREA OF LIFE. Success is a funny thing. We work our butts off to achieve success; then, we stop doing the very tasks that helped us reach that level. I am sure you can think back to when you accomplished a significant goal, and you remember all the specific tasks it took. Then, sometimes weeks or months later, you slowly stopped performing some of those actions. Why do we do this? Maybe you didn’t like doing some of those things. You forced yourself because you knew you had to to be successful. Now that you reached that level, you took your foot off the gas. I have been there, done that, and got the t-shirt! I know top salespeople who became number-one in their company or industry; then they stop doing all the necessary prospecting to stay

at the top. I know Kickboxing and MMA Champions who trained six hours per day, and then they won the championship. Next thing you know, they are training a lot less and enjoying the fruits of their labor, instead of staying hungry and aggressive. Former Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Andy Ruiz, shocked the world by defeating the seemingly unbeatable Anthony Joshua by knockout. It was a spectacular finish. When they fought each other in the rematch, Andy Ruiz was 17 pounds heavier than he was for the first fight, and he admitted to not

training nearly as much as he did for the first fight. This has happened countless times in sports and business. James “Buster” Douglas was another example. He pulled off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history when he beat “Iron” Mike Tyson in February 1990. When Douglas fought Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield in his first heavyweight title defense, he was nearly 20 pounds heavier and not nearly as sharp as he was when he fought Tyson. These are called "comfort zones." When a person achieves success, they often stop performing the necessary work to stay on top. “Becoming a champion is great, but remaining a champion shows your superior ability.” This topic came up when we were in the middle of our most recent black belt cycle (Black belt cycle is a six-month period where we put our black belt candidates through intense training to prepare them for their final black belt test.) We were thinking of some of our past graduating groups and how strong and confident they were. They were in incredible shape, and their skill level was off the charts. After brainstorming as a team, we realized we got away (unintentionally) from some old-school training habits and methodologies that made a substantial difference. After identifying what they were, we added them back into the black belt preparation process, and like magic, this recent group of graduating black belts looked like the black belts of old. They were in top shape, knew the curriculum inside out, and had tremendous overall skill levels. Comfort zones can sneak up on us all. Most of the time, we stop doing certain things without even realizing it. We get busy, and it just happens. Now, faithful reader, it is time for you to do some thinking. Where have you slipped backward in life? Are there some "old school but good school" things you can add back into your routine to reach that former level of glory? As is true of all things, massive action leads to massive results! Y Master Shihan Craig Haley is the Seventh Degree Black Belt instructor at Elite Force Martial Arts, eliteforcemartialarts.com.

Legal Matters

If You Have Equity in Your Home, Consider a Trust BY MARTIN ZEVIN, ATTORNEY

IN 2012, I WROTE AN ARTICLE RECOMMENDING AGAINST DOING A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST IF YOU WERE "UNDERWATER" WITH YOUR mortgage. Many of my clients had bought or refinanced from 2004 to 2006 at the top of the market. However, the last nine years have seen significant increases in property values, resulting in many homeowners having positive equity. If prices continue to rise, many more homeowners will have some positive equity. In the article I wrote in 2012, I advised clients to live long enough to see their properties increase in value to exceed the amount of the mortgage; at that time, they could come back to me to discuss a revocable living trust. That time is now here. Without equity in your home, it does not make sense to pay an attorney the fee and costs involved in creating a trust since you would be burdening your heirs with a property that has negative equity. However, once that equity turns positive, you are doing your heirs a favor by eliminating the time and money involved in going through probate. Probate can take a year and cost thousands of dollars in fees and costs. Remember also that the trust is called a "revocable living trust." This means that, as long as you are alive, the trust remains with you. You can always sell your home and buy a new home as trustee of your Trust. You do not need to change the trust unless you want to change the beneficiaries for the new property. You can also buy additional properties, in Florida or out of state, as Trustee of your Trust. Therefore, if you now have equity in your home, you

should seriously consider creating a Trust. Transferring your home to the trust will not change your homestead or your real estate taxes. In addition, regardless of the equity in your home, it is extremely important to have current advance care directives to protect you if you are incapacitated. These include the durable power of sAttorney (which must specifically include the address of your property) as well as the designation of health care surrogate and living will. New Florida laws could mean that your current documents need to be revised. Tidbits & Trivia

Old Wives’ Tales Debunked BY JIM TERLIZZI THERE ARE MANY OLD WIVES' TALES THAT, EVEN TODAY, MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE TO BE TRUE. LET ME SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT AS TO WHICH IS FACT AND WHICH IS FICTION. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. While apples are good for you, they don't have the power to repel all illness. However, a clove of garlic a day will keep everyone away. Dab Scotch on a baby's gums to soothe teething. Since even a few drops of alcohol can be toxic to an infant, this is not recommended. However, if you can't stand the baby's crying, you can soothe yourself by drinking the juice of a quart of whiskey. Eating horseradish will cure a chest cold. There is no scientific basis for this. Instead, eat a spoonful of wasabi. When the fire subsides, you will be happy you just have a cold. Bad things come in threes. Basically, this only applies to marriages. Spilling salt brings bad luck. This canard apparently sprung up from da Vinci's painting, "The Last Supper," which shows a pile of spilled salt next to Judas' arm. Spilling salt is not bad. Spilling sulfuric acid is. Cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis. Scientists have found no truth in this — unless you crack your knuckles against someone's skull. White wine will remove a red wine stain. No one knows where this rumor started. Simple answer: Avoid the problem in the first place. Drink white wine. Sitting too close to the television will make you go blind. This has some basis in truth. Back in the 1960s, some color TVs emitted 100,000 times more radiation than federal health officials considered safe. They were quickly recalled. However, this warning does apply if you sit too close to a nuclear reactor. Eating carrots will improve your eyesight. Then why are rabbits farsighted? Carry an acorn around to stay young. If this were true, squirrels would live forever. Sticking chopsticks upright in your food is bad luck. In Japanese culture, placing chopsticks like this is reserved for funerals, which probably explains how this tale came about. However, sticking a chopstick in your eye is truly bad luck. Bathing while pregnant can drown your fetus. Nonsense. Not bathing while pregnant can end your marriage.

Honey Chicken 2.0

PEPPERY TURMERIC CHICKEN WITH ASPARAGUS & HONEY

BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER I have a food repertoire. And while I love to try new recipes, it is rare for one of my cooking endeavors to make it into my regular dinner rotation. This easy chicken and asparagus dish adapted from The New York Times has become a regular in my house. Plus, I took the recipe out for a spin and substituted shrimp for the chicken and broccoli for the asparagus. (See photo on next page.) If you are unfamiliar with turmeric, it has a mellow earthy flavor. Seriously, if the earth were a flavor, it would be turmeric. The dish is finished off with a simple honey-black pepper sauce. A splash of rice wine vinegar at the end rounds out the spice and the sweetness. >>>

Try the Wine

Delicious Red Blends from Washington State BY DAVID EHRENFRIED

SO WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A GLASS OF WINE FROM WASHINGTON STATE? YOU CAN BE FORGIVEN IF YOUR ANSWER IS, “Hmmm….” The selection of Washington wines available in east coast retail locations can be disappointing considering Washington makes more wine than any state in the U.S. besides California. They’re worth looking for because they deliver both high quality and excellent value. The value is so high it’s amazing to me retailers don’t stock more. Among the better Washington values, are wines loosely categorized as "red blends." These are wines made from varying combinations of black and red grape varietals, such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot along with numerous others, where no single varietal’s content exceeds 75% of the mix. Below that limit, Washington wineries can't legally label a wine "merlot," for example, unless the wine is 75% or more merlot. “Red Blend”—even capitalized—isn’t very catchy. So many vintners give their blends colorful or whimsical marketing names, like “Flying Pig,” “D2,” “The Catalyst,” “Edge of Heaven,” “Mystique,” “The Devil You Know,” and—you guessed it—“The Devil You Don’t Know.” Many of these red blends are Bordeaux-like wines made with hefty doses of cabernet sauvignon or merlot along with cabernet franc, petit verdot, and other varietals. Some are about as close in taste and character as any American wine gets to quality French Bordeaux. Others are more syrah-based, often blended with grenache and mourvèdre, to make Rhone-style wines. And some combine syrah with cabernet sauvignon, a style perfected in Australia. The variations are endless, with some including five or more different varietals in boundless combinations. That can make buying and trying Washington red blends a bit like Forest Gump’s now proverbial box of chocolates. To paraphrase, you never quite know

what you’re going to get. In reality, many fine wines from all over the world are intricate blends. Such uncertainty may be a drawback for some. But it’s also an essential part of exploring different wines—and one of the objectives of this column: to encourage readers to try and appreciate wines they haven’t had before.

Sampling Red Blends I recently found and tasted seven moderately priced Washington red blends. They ranged between $13 and $36 a bottle, a good sweet spot for balancing quality and reasonable expense. It’s possible, of course, to spend less or considerably more on Washington red blends. As my tasting notes below indicate, some were truly delicious and memorable; others were less so. But they all were very good values when compared to similar wines from California or France. Generally, these were not bashful wines. The best were rich wines with soft, round, and plush fruit flavors, usually combinations of black cherries, dark berries and plums. >>>

Try the Wine <<< Some wines also included scents and tastes of toasty oak, chocolate, vanilla, pepper and licorice. They were consistently well balanced with a pleasant acidity that made them taste fresh, along with mostly mild tannins that made them easy to drink. I found the lack of tannic astringency a plus, even if that means these wines may not age for many years. Washington red blends, to my taste, tend to be more subtle and laid-back than many of their California counterparts. You can drink them young and enjoy them with a wide range of foods, including cheese, pasta, and many meat, poultry and fish dishes. Washington Wine Backdrop My enthusiasm for the quality and value of Washington wines has an important backdrop in the state itself. Serious commercial winemaking in Washington began barely 50 years ago. Even though grapes were grown there as early as 1825, there were fewer than 20 licensed wineries in the state by the early 1980s. Among the pioneers were Woodward Canyon, L'Ecole No. 41, Leonetti Cellar, and Chateau St. Michelle, now one of the world's largest and most successful wine producers. By 2000, there were barely 100 wineries. Today, there are over 1,000 wineries. They’re fed by hundreds of vineyards planted mainly on more than 60,000 acres located in the vast 11 million acre Columbia River basin on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains.

This basin is an arid, hilly, desert-like landscape. It lies in an immense “rain shadow” created by the Cascades, which rob most of the moisture from the Pacific Ocean's eastward-moving air. Annual precipitation in eastern Washington averages only 4-8 inches compared to more than 28 inches west of the Cascades. The conditions in the Columbia River basin turn out to be very nearly ideal for growing grapes, not to mention cherries, apples and pears. The soils in the basin drain well and combine minerals from ancient volcanic eruptions with other high nutrient materials deposited by massive post-Ice Age floods that helped shape much of the Pacific Northwest’s Rocky Mountain and desert landscapes. With modern irrigation, the Columbia, Yakima and Snake rivers provide ample water. Critically, however, the Columbia River basin lies between the 45 and 47 Parallels, roughly the same latitudes as the famous Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhone wine regions in France and the Piedmont in Italy, famous for Barolo and Barbaresco. At these latitudes, the earth’s angle to the sun optimizes growing and harvest season daytime hours, giving grapes up to 17 daily daylight hours to mature and ripen. Also, the area’s unique conditions create huge temperature swings between warm days and cool nights. These diurnal fluctuations, often as much as 40-50 degrees, enable vines to produce grapes that can achieve acidity levels ideal for making bright and refreshing wines.

Tasting Notes 2015 DELILLE CELLERS D2, COLUMBIA VALLEY ($35-40): A delicious and

sophisticated Bordeaux-inspired blend with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Wonderfully rich and velvety smooth, with cedar and red and dark berry aromas and cherry, berry, and plum flavors. Long lingering finish. 2016 MERCER FAMILY VINEYARDS EDGE OF HEAVEN BLEND, HORSE HEAVEN HILLS ($17-19): Merlot, Syrah, Grenache,

Petit Verdo, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh, smooth, round, nicely balanced, and easygoing. Pops with blackberry, currant and plum aromas and dark cherry and berry flavors. Excellent value. 2016 HEDGES FAMILY ESTATE C.M.S., COLUMBIA VALLEY ($11-15): Cabernet

Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Light fruit and woody aromas with straightforward red berry flavors. Tasty and pleasant but a bit thin. Pleasant enough but not a wine for special occasions. 2017 LUKE RED BLEND, WAHLUKE SLOPE ($16-19): Cabernet Sauvignon,

Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc,

and Malbec. Great value. Cedar, earthy, and plum scents with layers of dark fruit and other flavors. Complex and enjoyable. 2017 APEX CELLARS THE CATALYST RED BLEND, COLUMBIA VALLEY ($17-20): Merlot,

Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Everything but the kitchen sink is in this wine. On the lighter side. Flavorful and easy-going but not memorable, except for the hit of spice mid-palette. 2017 CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE INDIAN WELLS RED BLEND , COLUMBIA VALLEY

($18-22): Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Cinsault, Barbera, and Mourvèdre. Really delicious. The Syrah and Merlot come through with deep, smokey fruit , chocolate, and vanilla. Full-bodied with a nice velvety texture. 2018 SHERIDAN VINEYARDS MYSTIQUE, YAKIMA VALLEY ($27-32): Cabernet

Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. A serious, very tasty, and full-bodied Bordeaux style with soft texture, loads of cherry, blackberry, and plum plus chocolate

and tobacco. Bit too tannic now, suggesting it could improve in a couple years. 2018 MARK RYAN WINERY THE DISSIDENT, COLUMBIA VALLEY ($36-40):

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Excellent Washington Bordeaux style. Delicious with cherry and berry fruit, loamy earth, oak, cocoa, vanilla and spice. Smooth with pleasing balance of soft tannins and refreshing acidity. Still young; probably better in a couple years.

Let’s Work Together

Value is also helped by that fact that compared to California, land and other wine production costs are lower in Washington than California.

Tips for Buying Washington Red Blends Buying red wines from Washington State shouldn't be difficult or time-consuming. The number of choices is unlikely to be anything like the selection from California or France. Among the Washington reds, you’ll likely see wines labeled cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and syrah, along with an occasional malbec or other red varietals. You'll probably also see some labeled “red blend” or with catchy names. Next, on all better Washington wines you’ll see place names, such as Columbia Valley, Walla Walla, Yakima Valley, Wahluke Slope, and Horse Heaven Hills. These are AVA (American Viticultural Area) names for where the grapes used to make each wine were grown. (Most Washington wines are made in Seattle wineries from grapes that have been trucked over the Cascades, similar to grapes grown in Portugal’s Douro River valley that are trucked to Porto and made into Port.) Eastern Washington has 18 different AVAs, but these five you’ll see most. Others you might see include Rattlesnake Hills, Red Mountain, Royal Slope, Ancient Lakes. The Walla Walla AVA is well known for superb, world-class Syrah wines—and also for the famously sweet Walla Walla onions that won’t make you cry when cut them. I then suggest picking from well-regarded brands or wineries and figure on spending at least $15 to $25 to get solid quality. Less expensive wines are more likely to be thin or possibly characterless, a consequence of being be made from cheaper, lower quality grapes. Spending up to $50 may get you more complex, higher quality wines. The top tier of Washington red blends generally cost more than $50, with very few selling over $150. Finally, to get a fix on how the wine will taste, look for the mix of grapes used in the wine. If it’s not on the front or back label, ask a sales person, or look up the wine or winery on the web. If the percentages are not listed, the order will tell you which varietals predominate. If you have a preference, pick wines where the varietals you prefer are listed first or second. I suggest trying cabernet sauvignon or merlot blends with three or four ingredients to get a sense of the signature Washington Bordeaux style. Syrah-based blends may only have two or three varietals and will be more in Rhone style. In addition to the wineries in my tasting notes, here are others I recommend you consider: Betz, Cadence, Canoe Ridge, Cayuse, Desert Wind, L’Ecole, Force Majeur, Hedges, Horsepower, Latta, Leonetti, Owen Roe, Quilceda Creek, Reynvaan, Saviah, Sleight of Hand, Waterbrook, and Woodward Canyon. Fear of Failure

A CHILDHOOD EPIDEMIC

BY DR. JILL SELBACH FEAR OF FAILURE AMONG CHILDREN IN AMERICA TODAY IS AT EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS. FEAR OF FAILURE CAUSES CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE DEBILITATING ANXIETY BEFORE THEY TAKE a test, compete in a sport, or perform in a recital. It causes them to give less than their best effort, not take risks, and, ultimately, never achieve complete success.

• Children can also avoid failure by failing in an activity, but protect themselves from the failure by having an excuse — "I would have done well, but I just didn't feel like it" or "I would have done just fine, but the teacher was totally unfair." Because their failures were not their fault, children can't be

Cause of Fear of Failure Children get this destructive perspective on failure from American popular culture. Popular culture defines failure as being poor, anonymous, powerless, unpopular, or physically unattractive. On television and in the movies, the losers — nerds, unattractive people, poor athletes — are teased, bullied, and rejected. With this definition of failure, popular culture has created a culture of fear and avoidance of failure. It has conveyed to children that if they fail, they will be ostracized by their peers and branded as losers for life! Parents Make Things Worse Many parents have fallen under American popular culture's spell as well. They've compounded the harm that failure can inflict on children by connecting their love and approval with it. The message children get is, "I won't love you if you get bad grades." They come to see failure as a threat to their personal and social standing. The Stigma of Failure There is no greater stigma in American popular culture than being labeled a loser. The expression loser has become an oft-used and enduring symbol in popular culture. To be called a loser is, to paraphrase a well-known sports cliché, worse than death because you have to live with being a loser. Avoiding Failure Children learn that they can avoid failure in three ways: • Children don't engage in an activity in which they fear failure. If children don't participate, they're safe from defeat. Injury, illness, damaged equipment, forgotten or lost materials, apparent lack of interest or motivation, or just plain refusal to take part are common ways children avoid failure and maintain their personal and social esteem. 58 pointpubs.com •

held responsible and popular culture and their parents must continue to accept and love them. • Many children don't have the luxury of not taking part or coming up with excuses. For example, children can't just not go to school. So another way that children can avoid failure is to get as far away from failure as possible by becoming successful. But children who are driven to avoid failure are stuck in limbo between failure and real success, what I call the "safety zone," in which the threat of failure is removed. For example, they have a B+ average or finish in the top 10 in their sport, but they are unwilling to intensify their efforts to fully achieve success.

The Value of Failure Failure is an inevitable — and essential — part of life. Failure bolsters the motivation to overcome obstacles that caused the failure. Children learn what they did wrong so they can correct the problem in the future. Failure connects children's actions with >>>

Get Psyched <<< consequences which helps them gain ownership of their efforts. Failure teaches essential life skills, such as commitment, patience, determination, decision making, and problem-solving. Children learn to respond positively to the frustration and disappointment they may experience as they pursue their goals. Failure teaches children humility and appreciation for the opportunities they're given. Of course, too much failure will discourage children. Success is also needed to bolster motivation, build confidence, and increase enjoyment. As children pursue their goals, they must experience a balance of success and failure to gain the most from their efforts. Defining Failure To protect children from destructive definitions of failure, give them positive explanations. Define failure in ways that encourage children to value rather than fear it. • Failure is not living in accordance with their values. When children cheat, lie, or don't take responsibility for themselves, then they fail. • When children are overly concerned with popularity or appearance, they fail. • Failure involves children not giving their best effort and making poor decisions • When children look for the easy way out and are influenced by peer pressure, then they fail. • Failure also means treating others poorly and not giving back to their families, communities, and the world as a whole. When children are selfish, uncaring, and disrespectful of the world in which they live, then they fail. Giving children a definition of failure that takes away the fear liberates them from that worry. It also frees them to strive for success without reservation, to explore, take risks, and vigorously pursue their dreams. Children will know in their hearts that some failure is okay and in no way a negative reflection on themselves as people. Finally, failure will ultimately enable them to achieve success, however, they define it. Y Dr. Jill Selbach is a licensed clinical psychologist. Fauci: Vaccines for Kids as Young as First Graders Could Be Authorized by September For this to happen by the start of the next school year, trials need to prove the vaccine is safe and effective in children. Experts say manufacturers aren’t moving quickly enough, and that this is important for achieving herd immunity and stopping the spread of variants.

hildren as young as first graders may be able to get the coronavirus vaccine by the time school starts in September, presuming trials are successful in those age groups, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with ProPublica. “We’re in the process of starting clinical trials in what we call age de-escalation, where you do a clinical trial with people 16 to 12, then 12 to 9, then 9 to 6,” Fauci said. When asked what was the youngest age group that might be authorized for the vaccine by September, he said, “I would think by the time we get to school opening, we likely will be able to get people who come into the first grade.” As optimistic as Fauci is, several pediatricians and infectious disease experts said they wish the pediatric trials would move more quickly. In addition to restoring stability to the education system and parents’ work schedules and keeping kids and those

around them safe, vaccinating children is essential to helping the country, as a whole, reach herd immunity and decrease the threat of new variants. Otherwise, “we’re going to have tens of millions of individuals in our communities that are able to maintain the virus. And when that happens, what that allows is for these unusual variants to emerge that may have the ability to evade our immunity,” said Dr. Buddy Creech, associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program. Despite the need, Pfizer is the only manufacturer whose pediatric vaccine trials are far enough along to potentially have data on elementary-school age children by the end of the summer. Pfizer has finished enrolling participants in its study of 12- to 15-year-olds and anticipates having data in “the early part of 2021,” according to a spokeswoman. “From there, we will plan to finalize our study in 5-11 year olds,” she added. As Pfizer completes its trials in adolescents, then 5- to 11-year-

olds, it’ll need to submit the data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for review and get authorization for the vaccine’s use in those age groups before it’s available; currently in the U.S., the vaccine is indicated only for those ages 16 and up. Moderna is still enrolling participants in its trial for adolescents ages 12 to 18, and it is “on track to provide updated data around mid-

year 2021,” the company said in an emailed statement. Stéphane Bancel, Moderna’s chief executive officer, has said that the company’s goal is to have data from the adolescent study in advance of the 2021 school year. Moderna said it’ll begin an age de-escalation study in

children ages 11 years to 6 months this year, but Bancel has said that the company doesn’t expect clinical data until 2022. Johnson and Johnson hasn’t started any pediatric studies yet. “We are in discussions with regulators and partners regarding the inclusion of pediatric populations in our development plan,” a spokesman said. Novavax, similarly, hasn’t begun any trials in children, and a company spokeswoman said it couldn’t share any details at this time. The University of Oxford, which partnered with AstraZeneca in developing a vaccine, will begin tests in 12- to 18-year-olds next month, according to Bloomberg News. The American Academy of Pediatrics has been “really advocating to try and make these trials happen with the same urgency that they happen for adults,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, who is vice chair of its committee on infectious diseases. The manufacturers will need to prove vaccines are safe and effective in younger bodies. The adult trials paved much of the way, but researchers still need to study how kids’ immune systems react and to confirm the optimal dosage. And even if the shots are authorized by September, there will need to be enough supply on hand in order to get school children immunized before school doors open. It’s essential to act expeditiously, O’Leary said. “I would love to see a vaccine available for all children in time for the next school year.” APRIL 2021 • pointpubs.com

“Our current chaos about children not being in schools is just terrible for children, and I think a lot of the concern would be assuaged if children were immunized. That doesn’t mean to me that they can’t get the infection or transmit it every once in a while, but it would reduce those possibilities tremendously. Dr. Sarah Long, professor of pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Why It’s Important to Vaccinate Kids Against COVID-19

Early on in the pandemic, some thought that children might be entirely immune. That’s clearly been disproven. Out of more than 20 million U.S. cases where age information is available, about 2.2 million, or 11%, have been in children under 18. Some get very ill, though this is rare. As of Feb. 8, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked more than 2,000 cases of what’s known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a

serious condition associated with COVID-19 that can result in cardiac dysfunction and kidney injury; 37% of the cases recorded were in Latino children and 32% in Black children. It’s also become evident that children are capable of transmitting the virus to some extent. On one hand, kids aren’t superspreaders: COVID-19 is clearly dissimilar to influenza or the

common cold virus, Vanderbilt’s Creech pointed out. “You put one of those in a classroom, then in a few days, it’s overrun,” he said. “That’s not what we see with COVID.” But exactly how infectious children are remains somewhat unclear, in part because schools have not been fully open, making it hard to gather data, said Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a pediatrician and professor of global health and infectious diseases at Stanford University. Studies from other countries, while informative, may not always extrapolate well to the U.S., she added. So while the “preponderance of data” points to children being less likely to infect people when compared with adults, “they certainly do,” said O’Leary, who is also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “So, if you’ve got vulnerable people in the household and your 7-year-old comes home with COVID, it’s not to say they can’t give it to anybody else. They absolutely can. It’s just a bit less likely.” It’s important to note that the vaccines have only been proven — so far — to prevent disease and not infection (data on that is harder to gather and takes longer to prove), which means it’s not guaranteed yet that vaccinated individuals can’t spread the coronavirus. But there are some inklings of hope that vaccination can at least reduce onward transmission. So if this bears out, the more people who are vaccinated in a community, including children, the more likely transmission will drop overall. “Our current chaos about children not being in schools is just terrible for children, and I think a lot of the concern would be assuaged if

children were immunized,” said Dr. Sarah Long, professor of pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine. “That doesn’t mean to me that they can’t get the infection or transmit it every once in a while, but it would reduce those possibilities tremendously.” Long is also a member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, where she has been reviewing the trial data and helping to make recommendations on how the vaccines should be used. She continued: “There are real virus control reasons, there are real societal reasons and there are economic reasons, because if children can’t go to school, people can’t work.” O’Leary said children as young as 6 months, which is the youngest age that Moderna plans to test, can get vaccinated so long as trial data shows the vaccines to be safe and effective. Infants under 6 months are likely to be protected by antibodies transferred through the placenta if the pregnant mother is vaccinated, he added.

How the Vaccine Will Be Studied in Kids

The pediatric vaccine trials will not be as large as the final stage adult trials, which enrolled 30,000 or more participants, giving a placebo to half and the vaccine to half. Pfizer’s 12- to 15-year-old study has enrolled 2,259 participants and Moderna’s adolescent trial is a similar size, aiming for about 3,000 participants. In both trials, some teens will receive a placebo.

That’s enough to prove safety and benefit, experts said, in part, because the adult trials have already paved the way. To show the vaccine is safe, among the many things that Pfizer is tracking includes the percentage of participants reporting “local” reactions such as pain at the injection site, redness and swelling, as well as the percentage of participants reporting systemic reactions such as fever, headache, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and joint pain. After the trials are completed, tracking for any safety issues will continue in the real world as physicians and patients will be encouraged to report to the FDA and CDC any side effects they think may be due to the vaccine. Doctors said they’d want to make sure that there are no signs that the vaccine overinflames the immune system or causes any allergic or autoimmune responses. “I think most people that are developing these vaccines feel like the vaccine is not going to trigger MIS-C, but it’s something that will be monitored for very closely both in the trials and more importantly, post-licensure,” added O’Leary, from the University of Colorado. Maldonado said she’ll also be on the lookout for any cases of GuillainBarré syndrome, which is often a concern when it comes to vaccines, but she noted that no significant increases in cases were seen in any of the adult trials. When it comes to proving benefit, the pediatric trials will focus on a different metric than the APRIL 2021 • pointpubs.com

adult trials. The adult trials’ primary efficacy measure was to compare how many vaccinated people wound up sick with COVID-19 symptoms compared with those who received the placebo and whether the vaccine impacted the severity of illness. Since children rarely are hospitalized due to COVID-19, the vaccine’s ability to reduce severe cases would be hard to measure unless the trials enrolled an enormous number of children. Instead, Pfizer’s and Moderna’s adolescent trials will focus on evaluating participants’ immune response by measuring antibodies, according to Pfizer’s spokeswoman and Moderna’s clinical trial website. Scientists haven’t yet identified an “immune correlate of protection,” which is usually defined to be the level of antibodies in the blood at which they can feel confident that a person is going to be protected from infection. Some vaccines that have been approved, like the one for measles, have an immune correlate of protection identified, while others don’t. In the absence of a definitive immune correlate of protection, the trials would compare antibody levels in children with those found in adults and extrapolate that the efficacy should then be similar. The FDA and advisory groups like the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices would then need to discuss whether the evidence is compelling. If scientists are able to identify an immune correlate of protection, however, “and you can demonstrate that kids get that with the vaccine, that’s even more satisfying,” O’Leary said. One final difference in pediatric studies is the potential for lower doses. Moderna has said that it will run its studies of children under 12 testing lower doses first. “As we go down in age, we give the smallest possible dose of vaccine that we think is reasonable, and then we steadily increase until

that point when we get that magic ‘Goldilocks’ level at which it works great and the side effects are tolerable,” Vanderbilt’s Creech explained. “I don’t think one dose fits all.”

A Call to Speed Pediatric Trials

Some pediatricians and infectious disease experts said they were eager for pediatric studies to move faster. “My understanding is that the entity formerly known as Operation Warp Speed had a lot of involvement with those adult trials, but with pediatric clinical trials, they’re not having the same degree of involvement,” O’Leary said. “So it’s more up to the manufacturers, and from my perspective, these manufacturers don’t have the financial incentive to conduct these trials with the same urgency that they did with the adult trials.” Stanford’s Maldonado added that she’s concerned that there’s not as much pressure on the manufacturers to recruit children of diverse backgrounds as there was for the adult trials.“I think it’s important to get those kids in to understand factors around the actual vaccine and also to get buy-in of those communities where we’re seeing more hesitancy. We want to make sure they are feeling comfortable about being represented,” she said. While O’Leary is not as confident as Fauci that we’ll see Pfizer’s data on younger kids by September, he feels very optimistic about the availability of a vaccine in the coming months for kids as young as 12, who tend to get sicker than the younger age group. “I think that’s a really big deal,” he said. Y Caroline Chen covers health care for ProPublica. She is currently reporting on the coronavirus pandemic.

SATURDAY MORNING AT THE POMPANO GREEN MARKET IS A GREAT WAY TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND ENJOY A FEW HEALTHY (AND NOT-SO-HEALTHY) TREATS. Many of us won’t think twice about springing for a $4.50 cappuccino or an extravagant bottle of wine, but when the price of blackberries goes up, we often think, “oh no, I shouldn’t spend $4.99 on a tiny box of blackberries.” Where is the logic in this? We all know we need to eat our fresh fruits and veggies. Shopping for them outside on a glorious Saturday morning is useful and perhaps even a therapeutic way to start the weekend. The fresh air, the legendary cerulean blue Florida sky, the sense of community along with a hot cup of coffee all come together for a perfect Saturday morning.

Dining Out Calypso Restaurant and Raw Bar. CARIBBEAN Since they opened their doors in 1990, Calypso has been a local favorite. This gem of a restaurant is known for its fresh, wild caught fish, Bahamian conch dishes, Jamaican jerk and American favorites all served with an island flair. On any given day, look around and you’ll see fellow diners devouring their house special cutter (sandwich) — sautéed shrimp with garlic butter, mushrooms and cheddar all stuffed into a hollowed-out kaiser roll. Check out the special board for a variety of locally caught fish with everything from grouper to snapper to wahoo among others. Plenty of land-lubber options are also available including filet mignon. For island comfort food, don’t miss one of their curries or rotis. Fresh oysters and clams are also available. Wash it all down with a draft beer, a glass of wine or choose from over 40 different bottled beers. So, if you are in search of high-quality ingredients, inventive cooking and a very welcoming staff, head over to Calypso. 460 S. Cypress Road, 954-942-1633 $$ Casareccio Trattoria Italiana. ITALIAN Wow! What a find. This small but impressive Italian eatery is delightful. We can’t really tell you what to try because the menu changes daily. However, we are willing to bet you will fall in love with this place which feels like it just plopped into Pompano straight from the hills of Tuscany. Reservations are highly recommended. Also, call ahead to see what they are serving. 1386 S.Federal Highway, 954-998-3642 $$$-$$$$ Checkers Old Munchen. GERMAN When you’re looking for

a change in your restaurant rotation, take a trip back to the old country at Checkers Old Munchen. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wiener schnitzel — it’s divine — a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves. The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Imbibe to your hearts content with their wide assortment of German beers. 2209 E. Atlantic Blvd., 954-785-7565 $$

Dangerous Minds is more than just a brewery. This spot at Pompano Citi Centre offers artisanal pizzas made from scratch using double-zero Italian flour. Their specialty is a Scotch egg which is a soft boiled egg wrapped in homemade sausage and then fried until crispy on the outside. But back to the brewery — all the beers are brewed on-site and owners Adam and Andre hale from Germany and England — two countries steeped in beer tradition. 1901 N Federal Highway, 954-657-8676 $-$$

The Chicken Box & More. • SOUTHERN This small spot with

just a couple of tables serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and does a robust take-out business. The shrimp and grits with scrambled eggs are a top-notch breakfast or a perfect “breakfast-for-dinner” option. The fried pork chops were delicately coated and crispy. We tried them with a classic potato salad and collard greens. The greens were stellar — they were juicy and perfectly seasoned with bits of pork supplying a pleasing heft. And who doesn’t love a marvelous fried chicken wing? 204 N Flagler Avenue, 954-781-7400

The Poké Company. • POKÉ If you haven’t tried a poke bowl, now is your big chance. Build your own bowl by choosing a base of rice or greens, then add a protein such as ahi tuna or steamed shrimp, then go to town with the mix-ins and sauces. Then top your bowl with everything from pickled ginger to tempura flakes. There are an infinite amount of choices. If bowls aren’t your thing, you can build your own poké burrito. 1154 N.
